Great Film.......2007-06-22

From the opening performance of "In The Heat of the Night", sung by the great Ray Charles, this film will grab your attention immediately and will grip you for the next hour and 3/4.

Poitier plays a black northern dectective Virgil Tibbs, who is arrested in the deep south for a murder he had nothing to with. Steiger is a bigoted local Sheriff eventually forced to work with Tibbs to solve the case. Both the lead performances are truly mesmerising. There are a number of classic scenes in this film of which perhaps my favourite is when the Sheriff interviews Tibbs for the first time and finds he's a policeman.

The film is very well directed by Norman Jewison and won 5 Oscars in 1967, including best actor for Rod Steiger. Quincy Jones also deservedly won a Grammy for his music score. The only extra is the original trailer, which is a shame. However the film itself is so good that the DVD has to have 5 stars regardless.

The Original "In The Heat Of The Night".......2007-06-15

1967's "In the Heat of the Night" is almost a time capsule of an earlier age. The long-running TV series of the same name has probably blurred memories of this classic, while the raw racial tensions depicted in the movie may have lost some of their edge in the intervening 40 years. However, the artistry of this Academy Award-winning movie remains vivid and intact.

In the middle of a hot summer night in the small Southern town of Sparta, Mississippi, a prominent white industrialist is found robbed and murdered in the streets. One of the town constables arrests a black man at the train depot, who seems to have more money than he should. Only at the jail, under questioning by the town sheriff (in an Academy Award-winning performanc by Rod Stieger), is it revealed that the black man is a homicide detective from Philadelphia named Virgil Tibbs (played by Sidney Poitier).

Thus begins an uneasy alliance between the white sheriff and the black detective, in a race to find the real killer before tensions in the town explode into something uglier. Along the way, the two will be forced to face their own and each other's racial prejudices. Poitier's street-savy and professional cop is quick to anger at any affront to his dignity, an attitude not much seen in Sparta. Stieger's redneck sheriff must walk a delicate line between his slowly increasing admiration for Tibb's skills and the discontent his presence in the case is causing among the townspeople. The case itself twists, turns, and doubles back on itself to a tense and surprising conclusion. In the process, the white sheriff and the black detective arrive at a subtle but touching mutual respect that is the real payoff of the movie.

The movie is blessed with a superb supporting cast, especially Warren Oates as a troubled town constable and Lee Grant as the wife of the murdered industrialist. The cinematography is unforgettable; the viewer can almost feel the stifling heat and humidity of Sparta. The detail, from the small diner with pies under glass to the sweat-stained shirt and tie and polite drawl of the town mayor, is spot-on.

This movie is very highly recommended as a classic movie experience that has lost none of its bite and its suspense over the years.

Great Murder Mystery with race overtones.......2007-03-13

If you haven't seen this Academy Award winning movie from 1967, you are missing one of the best dramas regarding race relations and murder ever
filmed. It stars Sydney Poitier and Rod Steiger. Poitier is a black
northern policeman on vacation in the south, while Steiger is a police
chief in Mississippi. When an important rich white man is murdered,
Poitier is picked up at the train station because he is black and not
a known resident. What ensues is suspenseful, funny at times, and has
many twists and turns to keep the viewer guessing.

This is a great movie, a classic for the ages. It has a wonderful story, black and white relations in the South, a murder, several suspects: with 2 fantastic actors playing off each other. In spite of the many reruns on TV, never dull my interest and enchantment with this film.

So far I have not been dissapointed by anything directed by Michael Mann. This is an outstanding movie with a complete 5 star cast. Anyone who enjoys gritty, crime dramas and armed robbery should see this movie. Mann shows both sides of the coin(especially in the greatest scene of the movie where Pachino, the cop, has a face to face conversation with De Niro, the crook). A definite must have for movie collectors

You can't expect anything less than a quality movie with 2 incredible actors such as DeNiro and Pacino. Awesome to see them battle against each other. My favorite part is when they sit down to chat and you'll see why. Long movie, so you better have time to watch it. For as long of a movie as it is, there were some ends left untied. Either way worth the watch.

The best crime movie ever?.......2007-05-29

Theres not much I can add to what has already been said. However if by some miracle you've missed this film over the last 12 years then here is a quick overview of one of the best crime movies ever made.

Al Pacino and Robert DeNiro star as respectively dedicated cop and master criminal. Pacino as Cop Vincent Hanna is so dedicated that he neglects his family and his 3rd marraige is falling apart. DeNiro as Neil McCauley is a man who is prepared to walk away from any relationship in order to maintain his criminal lifestyle. A previous reviewer gave the acting honours to Pacino, which I'd have to disagree with. Lets be clear here both are excellent, and I like both actors, they are amongst the best ever. But for my money DeNiro steals it in perhaps his last great performance. Pacino just overplays his part just a little bit, which allows me to give it to DeNiro - but only just.

The remainder of the cast are excellent and Michael Mann directs with his usual skill. Some of the action sequences in this film are brilliantly done. I recently saw Mission Impossible III, which has some impressive action sequences in it but they aren't in the same league as the ones in this film. Why? Because Heat does not rely on CGI effects and the camerawork is vastly superior. Furthermore action sequences do not need to contain explosions every 30 seconds to make them work!

This is quite a long film at 164mins but you will find that it passes very quickly - always the sigh of a good film.

Since its release I've seen it a 100 times - The way Pacino and Deniro are dressed is just extravagant! The Deniro's French Cut and the Hair style of Pacino, the Tatoo on Tom Sizemor's Arm and the makeup on Val's Eyes -whoo! its just GREAT. The two sides of the law - the rules to follow and the disciplines and loyalties of Partners and Families. It all comes together in each of Michael Mann's movies and HEAT was just the beginning. I recommend every one of his films to be bought and watched again and again.

Another reliably well-crafted, generally engrossing documentary from Ken Burns, Lewis & Clark employs the director's now-familiar approach to his subjects, from its elegant juxtaposition of period illustrations and portraits against newly filmed footage of historic sites to Burns's repertory of accomplished actors to provide gravitas for quotes from the key figures. Granted the formula has become familiar enough to allow parody, but Burns knows how to invest his historical investigations with movement and drama, making this four-hour journey a worthwhile trip.

Beautiful Scenery of the American West.......2007-04-26

Breathtaking cinematography of the American West, really helps you see the journey as the Corps of Discovery would have. Provides insight into the troubled character of Lewis. Made me curious to learn more about Native Americans. Was saddening to see how good relations initially were between the explorers and the Indians, the good faith, compared to the strife and mistrust that prevailed later.

Enjoyed following along with a map as the film progressed. Jefferson estimated it would take Americans 100 generations to settle the West--they did it in five.

Travel with the Corps of Discovery.......2006-09-25

I absolutely love this movie. Something about the Lewis & Clark expedition appeals to the adventurer in each of us. The United States as a country is less than 30 years old on May 14, 1804, as Lewis & Clark leave with Jefferson's "the Corps of Discovery" on their famous expedition to explore the west. The photography of this DVD is stunningly beautiful, the music hauntingly reminiscent of the early 1800's. The story is told through reading excerpts from the Corps' diaries and journals, beautiful photography, and interviews with Dayton Duncan (writer), John Logan Allen (geographer), Stephen E. Ambrose (historian), William Least Heat-Moon (writer), James P. Ronda (historian), Mylie Lawyer (Twisted Hair Descendant), and others. This movie leaves the sense of having travelled with the Lewis & Clark expedition and having seen the beautiful country with their eyes, as you hear their words and see the land they saw.

As stated of the Corps of Discovery in the movie's Introduction, "They were beginning the most important expedition in American History, the United States' first official exploration into unknown spaces, and a glimpse into the future of their young nation. They would become the first United States citizens to experience the Great Plains, the immensity of its skies, the rich splendor of its wildlife, the harsh rigor of its winters. They would be the first United States citizens to see the daunting peaks of the Rocky Mountains, the first to struggle over them, the first to cross the Continental Divide -- to where the rivers flow west. And after encountering cold, hunger, danger, and wonders beyond belief, they would become the first of their nation to reach the Pacific Ocean by land. It would be the greatest adventure of their lives. . . It's a great story. It's a human story. It's a story of those who went first. THEY were first. They led the way. They opened the trail." I first borrowed this DVD from our local library, but then had to buy it for my own. Sometimes I watch it just for the beauty of the scenery and the hopeful young optimism of a new country, looking west all the way to the Pacific Ocean.

A Good Documentary: A Bit of History, A Bit of Storytelling.......2006-02-13

When I was growing up in Oregon, the Lewis & Clark Expedition was raised up as one of the most important events in American History and we got to learn about it every year. Of course, the entire focus of the journey was on reaching the Oregon Country and the winter they spent at Fort Clatsop. I was always captivated by the journey and loved visiting some of the sites along the trail.

When I came across this Ken Burns documentary, I was excited by the prospect of its four hour run time. I've seen many films about the expedition that try to squeeze the trip into a 45 minute adventure. And let me tell you: this film delivers. It lived up to all of my expectations.

Given its running time, LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY has time to dwell on the entire journey. I was amazed by how much I learned about the expedition BEFORE they reached the Columbia (something largely left out of my childhood lectures). The film, in many parts, is beautifully shot and Burns manages to capture many parts of the country without capturing modern civilization.

Of course, I agree with those reviewers who argue that the film does gloss over some of the impact the expedition had on the course of American history. While the narrators mention the destruction that would befall the Native American tribes and the fact that Lewis & Clark were brining a message of American empire, this documentary could have used a little more historical realism. But the film wouldn't have been as cheery or sentimental that way.

Stephen Ambrose, despite the claims of accuracy that many have touted on this site, gets a little too involved for my tastes. Of course, he is a fabulous storyteller. He'd be a great grandfather to have around. But one has to wonder while listening to him exactly where he is embellishing and "filling in" the history and how much he is reporting.

On the whole, I thoroughly enjoyed LEWIS & CLARK: THE JOURNEY OF THE CORPS OF DISCOVERY. It is a great historical work and a piece of art as well. I have watched it twice already and have not been bored. If you're interested in Lewis & Clark, this is a great way to bring history into the television room. I highly recommend it.

Deluxe Edition Delivers.......2007-05-27

Body Heat is one of my all time favorite movies. I am a big fan of film-noir, of which Body Heat was a modern exemplar as well as an example of a time when adults made movies for other adults.

Since other reviews amply explain the plot, I will restrict my comments to the DVD. I do want to say that part of the magic of this movie is the pitch-perfect casting from William Hurt as the over-matched, incompetent lawyer, to the gorgeous and sensual Kathleen Turner as his femme fatale, to even those acting in smaller roles such as the Ted Danson as the dancing DA and Mickey Rourke as an expert arsonist for hire. There is not a bad casting decision here, nor a wasted scene.

The Deluxe Edition DVD provides several worthwhile extras. Most notably, interviews with Kasdan, Hurt, Turner, and Danson shot recently, provide a great deal of insight into the intent of the movie, how the actors were selected, why the movie was shot in Florida instead of New Jersey as originally planned, and some of the obstacles that had to be overcome (the cold weather!, Alan Ladd's objection to Hurt's mustache, Turner's shyness about filming nude during the sex scenes, and so on). Most interesting to me was the explanation of what Maddy Walker (the Turner character) was feeling at the end of the movie in the final scene. The movie always seemed ambiguous to me with respect to whether she really cared for Racine or not. The documentary provides some insight from Kasdan's and the actor's perspectives.

The axed scenes are also of interest. I almost always agree with the decision to exclude scenes when I have seen them on DVDs and this is no exception. However, it is interesting to see how the story was originally planned and that there was actually a failed attempt to murder Maddy's husband prior to the successful attempt. It is also nice to see Turner in a sexy stewardess outfit (in the movie the Racine character has a thing for women in uniforms).

The sensuality of John Barry's wonderful jazzy score can not be emphasized enough. The score is, as Kasdan remarks, a character in the movie.

In short, the Deluxe Edition is worth the extra few dollars over the regular edition for any Body Heat fan. Would that they made movies like this today!

FANTASTIC! Gets better each time I watch it..........2007-05-22

I bought this after seeing it on cable and being reminded of what a good film it was.

On the off chance you are looking at this review and haven't seen it, William Hurt is a small town lawyer seduced by a local femme fatale, Kathleen Turner, and he gets in over his head in doing her bidding. His best friend, a assistant district attorney, played by Ted Danson, is in the unenviable position of having to investigate his friend. The drama and plot twists unwind from there...

I have now watched it several times, and I actually think it gets better each time you watch it, because you start noticing small details about the scenes and plot that you might have originally missed...this film has aged beautifully. Amazing ambience and Hurt,Turner, Mickey Rourke (back when he was cool), Danson, and the other supporting actors are great.

I bought this exact DVD off Amazon, so I can speak about the extras. This specific DVD includes some scenes that were cut--including one scene involving a first murder attempt on Richard Crenna that failed. The other extras included some interviews in Europe that took place in 1981 with Turner and Hurt. The next set of extras is discussions with the actors today about the making of the film--interesting to see how they have aged. Lawrence Kasdan, the director, is also interviewed. There's a LOT of interesting information about how it was filmed (it was cold, not hot when they shot the movie!), some artistic choices that were made, etc. I actually thought, for once, that the extras were valuable, because I had never seen film noir, and the extras really emphasize the point that Kasdan was going for a sexy recreation of old film noir like the Asphalt Jungle. Never seen those, but if they are as good as Body Heat, I will go rent...

This film is definitely not given the credit that it is due. It is spicy and enticing all the way through. As a student of the law I can definitely relate the everything that occurs in this film. The main characters are full of plotting, schemes, and deceit. This movie teaches a great lesson for life, showing what can happen when you are not careful, let your guard down, and get too entrapped in physical relationships. This movie is highly recommended. You will love it!

I continue to go back to certain movies. This is one that gets better with each viewing.
William Hurt and Kathleen Turner provide the melting point, but the supporting cast is entirely up to the needed level to make this one of the best dark thrillers of the past 25 years. Ted Danson is particularly good in his turn as prosecutor, while the late Richard Crenna turns in a creditable performance as the money machine that ignites the fires of greed. J.A. Preston is terrific as the police investigator who follows, or is he led?, the trail of the crime.
Moody, dark and intricate, with everything working, this is one of my favorites.

"You wanna hear something wild?...". No doubt about it: best erotic thriller ever. Story and characters totally pull the viewer into a world of crime, greed and blind passion. Superb music score by John Barry. South Florida's money and temptation at its best.

This movie is great on a few levels:

-Excellent Special effects.

-A few appearances by cult favorite actors.

-and TONS of fish tanks.

But really, this movie is loaded, and I can't see how no one dubbed it an "instant cult classic" in 1988 when it was released. The acting is cheesy, the lines are cheesy, and the whole story is irrational (but continuous and easy to follow just the same).

The extras on the DVD are cool too. I bought this in the "Walking Dead" fright pack which means I paid about $5.00 for this thing. After watching this movie I would gladly pay 9.98 for it and all the fun I'm going to have introducing friends to it!

Note: I liken Piscopo to an athlete who's personality is great and you love to watch him- but he just can't seem to reach the championship level... just an observation.

A Buddy Cop Movie With Zombies; Does It Get Any Better?.......2006-10-19

This is the epitome of the type of movie Anchor Bay releases on DVD, crisp, clean, clear and celestial. Dead Heat is by far a cult movie that can be seen as both an action and horror movie. Our leads, LAPD detectives Roger Mortis (Treat Williams) and Doug Bigelow (Joe Piscopo) are investigating crimes, which are being committed by people who are deceased. When Roger is killed during the investigation, he is brought back to life, by the same element that is resurrecting these criminals, to solve the mystery.

The movie itself isn't suppose to be taken seriously, at least that is how I watched it. Joe Piscopo provides many one liners that are really funny, and one liners can be hard to pull off. Treat Williams also provides some dry and wry humor. It's cool that Vincent Price was in this movie, which gives it the official horror stamp of approval. There are plenty of dummies, fake blood, and cheesy effects to keep you going. It also has this buddy cop vibe to it, now it isn't Lethal Weapon or anything, but still a buddy cop movie. The sour cream on the taco is it was made in the 1980s! So if you love those late night cop movies and have a taste for things that are undead, you get them both in the same eighty-four minutes!

Cagney at his best.......2007-03-22

I believe this was Cagney's signature movie as a gangter. It shows that crime doesn't pay and that gangters were usually wired differently than other people. Sometimes they were mental cases like Cody Garrett was in this movie. He was a criminal that could kill as easily as eating, no conscience, no regret. Very realistic with psycho killers in these days. He should have one an oscar for this film. It shows how law enforcement befriends criminals to catch them. It is a classic film in under-cover work. Years ahead of it's time. Great movie!

Not a huge fan of James Cagney or gangster movies, and nothing about White Heat has changed that opinion. Lame plot, corny dialogue, and just plain bad acting constantly had me cringing. In it's day this movie was no different than the generic blow-em'-up action/adventure movies that Hollywood has churned out en masse in more recent decades. Hardly what I would consider to be a classic.

Don't you dare forget that Dr. Drew Casper has written many film books, is writing a couple film books and is brilliant and insightful. He's the head of the film dept at USC. Don't forget that Dr. Drew Casper is brilliant and insightful because Dr. Drew Casper makes bunches of brilliant and insightful comments only Dr. Drew Casper could make.

Don't ask Dr. Drew Casper to heal your leg he's not that kind of Dr. He's the kind of Dr. who sits in and ivory tower, writing papers and making sure the little people don't forget that Dr. Drew Casper is brilliant and insightful.

This guy is obnoxious. It took me about two thirds of the movie to become inured to his saccharine comments. He absolutely loves the "character" Cody Jarrett. Almost salivates in his admiration of the "character" Cody Jarrett. His admiration of this muderer is a sign that Dr. Drew Casper has known no adventure or rites of passage other than the passages in his books and papers.

If you can get past he jittery obsessive personality, he does make a few "insightful" comments. By the way, this is a great movie.

A powerful and exciting film.......2006-08-22

This is one great film. It starts with a bang and never lets up. You'd be hard pressed to find a better piece of film noir, and it has really stood the test of time. At the center of it all is James Cagney, whose character and performance are as ruthlessly cold-blooded and crazy as nearly any character in film history.

Neither Cagney or the script ever compromise in their portrayal of the life and death of the main character. Yet, for all his flaws and malignant danger, he somehow comes across as sympathetic to some degree. An impressive feat.

This really is a great film, and anyone who likes classics, gangster, or noir cinema should definitely own it.

I mean, she is pretty hot so that's cool, but don't expect much of a workout or much of a dance lesson!

I would save your money and just get a REAL dance instructional where you can learn to dance on your own and then THAT will be your workout!

The best ones I have found are How To Do The Robot - Breakdance Instructional DVD or Top 20 Breakdance Moves. These are the cream of the crop!

Best dance workout I've ever tried........2007-01-15

Ms. Grimes' teaching is energizing, friendly, fun, enthusiastic, and warm. I find the pace of the workout to be just right for me. She breaks down the moves and then puts them together. Each move has a name so it is easy to follow. I appreciate that she takes the time to include a warm-up and a cool-down that address the muscles that will be and have been used during the workout. As an added bonus, this DVD has an extra 10 minute workout which is pretty amazing. I have never seen a tape instructor come up with such a short workout that works that many body parts(abs, glutes, legs).

Easier to follow then her African Beat DVD.......2006-11-18

This is a professionally produced dvd with chapter seclections, bonus performance of the dancers & a bonus general aerobic 10 min workout & comes in 5.1 dolby.
It's donw with her & 3 girls (1 a little chubby) & 2 guys on the usual stage.
There is a good extensive 12 min warm-up that does the neck turns, shoulder rolls, torso stretches, lunges & also works on the spine, quads & calves.
The dance itself is 16 min. She teaches "chag", step touches, schottische, lock step, snake, woopie hop, electric slide, wobble.
The cool down is a little bit of walking & some of the same lunges, etc.
She never goes in slower then tempo, but in this dvd she does break it down. Most still might find this fustrating considering the arms & legs move very differently.
There is a lot of repeating of the steps, both only a few steps back & also from the top many times since the moves only take 3-5 seconds to execute each.
She does joke around/ask how her dancers are doing & leaves in some errors to make it feel more like a class.

"Do it again, baby".......2006-09-22

Of all my workout videos, I have to say that this is the most fun. MaDonna interacts with her dancers and they all seem to have fun while going through the motions, not fake smiling like people in other workouts I've seen. The moves aren't anything complicated- she breaks it down for you and does enough repetitions to have you eventually get it. I recommend that you watch the DVD first before actually trying the workout, so that you have some idea what to expect, unless you're a really quick learner. You can practice over and over if you want to perfect the combination, and it's a good workout that doesn't leave you soaked with sweat afterward (unless you've never worked out before- then I'd suggest you take it easy at first.)
The DVD comes with a warm up that's about 10-15 minutes, a combination that's about 20, and a cool down. You have the option of just working out to the music, which is nice if you've done it a lot like I have. If you don't want to go through all that, there's a 10-minute "bonus workout" that really has you feel the burn. MaDonna recommends that you do this bonus workout every day to get results. "Religion, it's a religion."
The dance at the end is cute too.

For a knock-out combination of timeless entertainment and vintage studio history, you can't do much better than The Warner Brothers Gangsters Collection. In the 1930s and '40s, Paramount specialized in glossy comedies, MGM popularized lavish musicals, Universal produced signature horror classics, and Fox scored hits with sophisticated dramas. The Petrified Forest, Robert E. Sherwood's 1935 Broadway success about survival of the fittest, hit the screen a year later with Leslie Howard and Humphrey Bogart magnificently recreating their stage roles and Bette Davis ably reteaming with her Of Human Bondage co-star Howard. Sherwood first wanted Bogart for a smaller role. "I thought Sherwood was right," Bogart said. "I couldn't picture myself playing a gangster. So what happened? I made a hit as the gangster." So right was he that Howard refused to make the film without him...and helped launch Bogie's brilliant movie career.

In The Roaring Twenties, the speakeasy era never roared louder than in this gangland chronicle that packs a wallop under action master Raoul Walsh's direction. Against a backdrop of newsreel-like montages and narration, it follows the life of jobless war veteran Eddie Bartlett (James Cagney) who turns bootlegger, dealing in "bottles instead of battles." Battles await Eddie within and without his growing empire. Outside are territorial feuds and gangland bloodlettings. Inside is the treachery of his double-dealing associate (Humphrey Bogart). It would be 10 years before Cagney played another gangster (in White Heat), a time in which gangster movies themselves became rare. "He used to be a big shot," Panama Smith (Gladys George) says at the finale, marking Bartlett's demise...and signaling the end of Hollywood's focus on the gangster era.

The prototype of a well-done boxed set.......2007-05-14

Kudos to Warner Home Video for the loving treatment they gave these six classic films from their vaults. Every film gets the Warner Night at the Movies treatment with a newsreel, a trailer, a vintage short subject, and a cartoon each from the year in which the movie was made. Plus there are commentary tracks for all of the films. I liked watching each film through first without the track, and then listening to them with the track turned on for insight into the stars and the style of the film. In addition to this you get the following featurettes:

Little Caesar - "End of Rico, Beginning of the Antihero"
Public Enemy - "Beer and Blood: Enemies of the Public"
Petrified Forest - "Menace in the Desert". There is also a radio adaptation featuring Humphrey Bogart, Tyrone Power, and Joan Bennett.
Angels with Dirty Faces - "Whaddaya Hear? Whaddaya Say?". This also has an audio-only radio production.
The Roaring Twenties - "The World Moves On"
White Heat - "Top of the World"

It's interesting to compare the three stars of these movies - Edward G. Robinson, James Cagney, and Humphrey Bogart - and their styles in each of these movies. "Little Caesar" and "Public Enemy" were made when prohibition was still in effect and gangland crime was still a big problem. Thus Robinson and Cagney each play remorseless criminals with no redeeming values whatsoever. Robinson's Rico is less physical than Cagney's Tom Powers, though. You believe that either one of them would shoot you without a second thought. However, Cagney's Powers is scarier because the real fear is that he would beat you to a pulp for the fun of it and THEN shoot you.

"The Petrified Forest" is not your typical gangster film, with Leslie Howard's vagabond being the real star in what amounts to an improbable romance set against the backdrop of the desperation of the Great Depression which the desert setting seems to signify. This 1936 film has Bogart as Duke Mantee, a gangster on the run, in what amounts to a supporting role. However, you do get to see all of the traits that made Bogart great when he got the opportunity to seize the lead in later roles. And to think they almost cast him as the filling station attendant in this one!

In 1938's "Angels with Dirty Faces" and 1939's "The Roaring Twenties" Cagney is again playing the lead gangster and Humphrey Bogart plays a supporting role in both films. With prohibition long over, though, these movies make Cagney's gangster more three-dimensional, showing him to even be a self-sacrificing character at times as well as a killer. Both movies bother to show that had circumstances been a little different, he might not have even become a criminal in the first place.

1949's "White Heat" shows the influence of film noir that was so popular in the 40's an 50's. Here, Cagney's gangster persona has come full circle back to the viciousness of Tom Powers in "Public Enemy". The big difference is that in this film Cagney's mother is no cream puff. She is, in fact, probably a bigger criminal in thought if not in deed than Cagney's Cody Jarrett. This final gangster film of the six shows technology and thus the law gaining on the criminal, with electronic gadgets and undercover lawmen with college degrees in psychology replacing the determined hard-boiled detectives and beat cops of the past. It very much looks forward to the Dragnet series that is to emerge in the 50's.

In summary, this is just a terrific package and basically acts as a complete course on the gangster film as genre. All studios should stand up and take notice of how Warner Home Video put this set together. Highly recommended.

FIve classic gangster flicks.......2007-01-31

Five classic gangster films from the glory days of Warner Bros.

Granted, "gangster film" isn't the most appropriate description of 1936's "The Petrified Forest," the film based on Sherwood Anderson's talky philosophical play, but if not for the dynamic presence of Humphrey Bogart as Duke Mantee, the "prestigious" production starring Leslie Howard and Bette Davis would likely now be relegated to the same vault that stores "She Loved a Fireman" (with Ann Sheridan) and other forgotten drek from the same period. It was this film that established Bogart as a valuable supporting player on the Warner lot, a position he would occupy until 1940's "High Sierra" made him a top star.

James Cagney and Edward G. Robinson would achieve stardom almost a decade earlier than Bogart with their breakthrough roles in 1931's "Public Enemy" and "Little Caesar" respectively. Directed by William Wellman, the former film holds up quite well despite the somewhat wooden performances of the supporting cast, whereas the latter is too stagy for its own good and remains of interest primarily for Robinson's dynamic performance.

1938's "Angels with Dirty Faces" and 1939's "The Roaring Twenties" are notable for pairing Cagney with Bogart, as adversaries in the former, and as partners, at least for a time, in the latter. Both are highly entertaining with "Angels" benefiting from the casting of the Dead End Kids.

The best film in this set, however, is 1948's "White Heat" with Cagney as Cody Jarrett who makes it to the "top of the world" only to have it blow up in his face. Jarrett ranks with Cagney's portrayal of George M. Cohen in "Yankee Doodle Dandy" as his finest performance.

While all 6 titles in this set are worthy ones, the four Cagney entries are the ones that are the real jewels and make his claim to the throne of king of the classic gangsters. "White Heat" features his finest and most memorable characterization, a masterpiece of curdled mother love. Warner Brothers is currently giving Criterion a run for its money as the best producer of lovingly restored and well-packaged films on DVD.

It doesn't get much better than this. Settle down with some popcorn, snuggle into your most comfy chair and get ready for hours of entertainment. The transfers of these DVD's are exceptional, especially on The Roaring Twenties and Angels with Dirty Faces. The quality of the other films is slightly less impressive, but still quite acceptable. Remember we're dealing with 75 year old films in the case of Little Caesar and Public Enemy. The audio transfers are also quite good.

The heart of the set is the magnificent 1949 classic, White Heat. This is my favorite gangster movie because of the psycopathic character, Cody Jarret. What a portrayal! Never in movie history has their such a intricately neurotic, mommy-obsessed, gun-toting murderer as Cody. Nobody else but Cagney could have pulled off this performance, which hasn't lost a beat in the intervening 55 years. The interplay between Cody and his mother is the stuff of legend. There isn't one unnecessary or boring moment in White Heat, it is magnificent.

One great thing about this release is that a new generation can grow to love and appreciate the talent of James Cagney. He dominates these films and he's as fresh and lovable as he was back in the 30's. His screen presence jumps out at you and even when he plays a thug, ya gotta love him. His charisma is palpable.

The weak movie here (and one which doesn't quite fit), is Petrified Forest, with Bogie's breakout performance. I would have preferred a George Raft movie in its place. Bogart's performances in the Cagney films is always as a cringing second banana and it's interesting to watch how Jimmy utterly dominates their screen pairing. They made three movies together and it's no surprise that Cagney guns down Bogie in every one!

Little Caesar now seems dated and the supporting cast is generally forgettable, especially the insipid Douglas Fairbanks, Jr. Edward G. Robinson is fabulous, as he always was, but the movie suffers the malady of most early talkers: overacting or over direction.

The extras on this DVD set are exceptional, especially the "Warner Bros. at the Movies." These contain a newsreel, a short, a cartoon and finally, the feature film itself. It allows the viewer to vicariously live through the 1930's. A real pleasure! My highest recommendation.

Since Warner Brohters were famous for their gangster films, a boxed set of the most
