I bought this yesterday with my Bestbuy giftcard and now I highly recommend if you want the first three films, you should get this.

Pros

+ All three films are on two disc (The first disc double sided and the first one is on one side and the second one is on the other).

+ They are the same DVDs you get if you bought them separately so you don't lose anything.

+ It's Cheap!

Cons

There are no cons really but these might be to some people.

- You don't have the disc artwork for 1 or 2
- You don't have the snap cases.
- The Aspect Ratio is incorrect on the back of the case. The first film has a different ratio than 2 & 3. 2 & 3 are the same.

Warner did a great job with this set alright. Highly recommended.

Reviewing the package only, NOT the movies........2007-03-08

Buyers should know that the widescreen aspect ratio listed for LETHAL WEAPON 2 and LETHAL WEAPON 3 are incorrect. They say they're 1:85.1, when they are actually 2:35.1. I found this out the hard way, after I'd opened the package.

It's very, very disappointing not to be able to rely on the information provided by the DVD manufacturer!

This set is Great!.......2007-01-17

I reckon everyone has seen or heard of the Lethal Weapon Movies so I'm not gonna review the movies. I'm gonna review this incarnation of it, or reincarnation.

This set plays beautifully. It gives you a crisp clear picture. The extended scenes of the director's cuts are very nice. The sound quality is excellent. All in all this particular version is a great buy! Enjoy:)

The series formula started to kick in with this immediate sequel to Lethal Weapon, but that doesn't necessarily make it a weak movie. Joe Pesci joins the fold, Richard Donner directs again, and Mel Gibson and Danny Glover return as LAPD partners, their relationship smoother now that Gibson's character has recovered from his maddening grief over his wife's death. But the reckless Mel and cautious Danny equation, good for a million laughs, settles into place in this story involving a South African smuggler and a new girlfriend (Patsy Kensit) for Gibson. For those of you that are over 17 or grew up watching the die hard movies or were able to see rated r movies when you were three years under age because your parents thought you were mature enough this movie is for you. Do to heavy violencen action seqeunces, occasional language this movie might not be appropriate or may be questionable to children under the age of 17 depending on what there parents or guardian think is appropriate. This is and very old dvd it celebrate it's 7th anniversary in DVD format this year. Since this dvd is old and there are plenty of copies tdue to it's high popularity you probably should not pay more than $25 dollars for a copy of this unless you are bying the whole quadrilogy at once and not just the second film. Try to get this used to if possible and not in new condition because some the copies can be over 25 dollars. Mel Gibson an Danny glover take up there gones again in this action packed seqeul to the original movie. Can young Revis and his partner stop a drug gain from smugglig out of the country find out in this action packed sligtly extended version. If you liked the die hard movies and the robo cops which were good until the fourth installment then they went done hill you will enjoy this.

The success of the 1987 Warner Bros. action film LETHAL WEAPON inspired director Richard Donner to reunite with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover for this first of three sequels which was more successful than the first film. Oscar-winner Joe Pesci(GOODFELLAS,THE SUPER,MY COUSIN VINNY,BETSY'S WEDDING,HOME ALONE 1 & 2) joins the cast as Leo Getz,who is often a nuisance to Sgt. Roger Murtaugh(Glover) and his partner-buddy Martin Riggs(Gibson). Not only that,Roger and Martin tease Leo often as if they were grade school kids. Leo's tagline is "Anything you need,Leo gets!". Once again Darlene Love again plays Roger's wife Trish. The Murtaughs' kids are back as well. The funniest scene in this film,believed by many,is when Roger sits on his toilet in his upstairs bathroom,and a planted bomb inside the Murtaughs' home explodes. In reality,that would have been sad. Patsy Kensit(BLAME IT ON THE BELLBOY) plays Martin's love interest. Great music soundtrack which includes the late George Harrison performing CHEER DOWN during the end credits.

I've lost count how many times I've watched this film. Gibson and Glover are excelent but the inclusion of Joe Pesci was the stroke of genius. His "steak sandwich" monologue is a classic. It's hard to believe he became so obnoxious in future sequels.
If you were going to watch only one Lethal Weapon movie, this should be it.

The summer of 1989 was loaded with blockbusters, yet there was only one movie that I really wanted to see more than any other. In a season that saw such blockbusters as a new Indiana Jones movie, the latest Star Trek picture and Timothy Dalton's second outing as 007, the movie that held the most excitement for me was LETHAL WEAPON 2. Not because of Mel Gibson or Danny Glover or a particular love of the original, but because the love interest came in the very lovely shape of the lead singer of one of my favorite 1980s bands (Eighth Wonder) Patsy Kensit.
Truth be told though, there's not much to Kensit's role here, she is there simply as window dressing in the part of a secretary at the South African consulate. The movie as a whole though is a great, fun ride and is easily my favorite of the franchise.
The plot of the movie involves drug smuggling that is being conducted by officials at the South African consulate. Back in the 1980s South Africa was largely an international pariah because of its policy of apartheid. This made it easy to target them as the villains and their position as diplomats provides them with the protective vbeil of diplomatic immunity. As lead villain Arjen Rudd (played wonderfully by British actor Joss Ackland) comments when confronting the Los Angeles police officers "you could not even give me a parking ticket."
Starting with a chase through the night streets of Los Angeles, the movie races from one action sequence to another rarely pausing for breath in what is a classic cop buddy movie. Both Gibson and Glover make a great team and the interplay between them provides for some really subtle humor.
Which brings us to Joe Pesci, whose humor is about as subtle as a sledgehammer in the role of witness Leo Getz - "Whatever you want Leo Getz - get it!?" Pesci is at times annoying and at other times loveable, but he is always funny. Obviously he was also a hit with the audience too as he would return in the third and fourth movie of the series.
As a bonus for Kensit fans like myself - in the scene where Leo is cleaning Riggs house you can hear Eighth Wonder's biggest hit "I'm not Scared" playing in the background. It's a shame they did not have Kensit's character survive until the end as they had originally planned, but I understand that her death leads Riggs to take the dramatic action that he does.
This is my favorite cop movie (alongside "Beverly Hills Cop" and an entertaining way to spend 114 minutes or 118 minutes if you go with the directors cut.
Scenes included in the directors cut includes Leo using numbers to remember a suspects address and Murtaugh getting some bad news from an auto-repair man after Riggs drives his new station wagon up against a guardrail. Pretty standard stuff that I felt did not add anything particularly.
The directors cut also comes with a making of featurette, cast and crew bios and a theatrical trailer. Here's hoping that one day soon Warner will put out an ultimate edition. Director Richard Donner has already done a great commentary track on the original Suoerman movie and a commentary track here would be welcome also.
Recommended.

Riggs and Murtaugh chase a drug dealer through the streets and end up finding a cache of illegal South African gold coins that puts them in the cross hairs of a vindictive villain. Despite being warned off by the bad guys, and later by their superiors because Arjen Rudd has diplomatic immunity, Riggs and Murtaugh stick with the investigation, even taking along the fast-talking, opinionated Leo Getz, a snitch in witness protection they're supposed to be protecting. As the stakes elevate, Riggs and Murtaugh go incendiary.

Mel Gibson and Danny Glover starred in a four-movie franchise that always did well at the box office. The chemistry between the two is fantastic, and they were the epitome of the buddy cops that elevated the television standard presented by STARSKY AND HUTCH to R movies filled with violence and grown-up language. Shane Black created the characters in his original script, then went on to write THE LAST BOY SCOUT, THE LONG KISS GOODNIGHT, and KISS KISS, BANG BANG. Director Richard Donner stayed with the franchise through all four movies.

Murtaugh and Riggs cover a lot of the same ground in this film, but although it's familiar, it's also a lot of fun. The action sequences are big and often, and there's never a dull moment in the film. The quips and wry asides as well as the visual humor never lets up. Although the film is now starting to show its age (17 years, and the absence of cell phones is a dead giveaway and the political issues involved are a dead giveaway), LETHAL WEAPON 2 is still a fun ride.

Fans of action movies who own the new Blu-ray player will want this disc if they don't already have it on another DVD format. Unfortunately, there's no added value to sweeten the pot and the disc's special features are practically non-existent. Still, the picture and the sound are first-rate, so if that's why you're rebuilding your collection of favorite movies, that will be enough.

Still working the bad hair Mel?.......2007-04-26

Before controversial religious films, arrests for being drunk amongst other things, and lots of negative press reared their ugly heads, Mel Gibson was one of the biggest stars in the film world. Personally I haven't liked a couple of his films so far (Mad Max - apart from the leather trousers) but Braveheart more than makes up for. Yes I know it's cliched, but I love that story! Soppy romantic at heart here, hi!

I was not that keen on the first Lethal Weapon movie, but this one was a lot exciting, apart from the South African politics. And Mel's hair. What's worse, that or his hair in Braveheart? Let me ponder that for a while.

About half way through - okay, the scene with Danny Glover sitting on the toilet - I realised I'd already seen it many years ago! Back in the *good* old days of high school, when nothing could ever replace video, and my mate and me had nothing better to do that rent Mel Gibson movies. And of course I remembered Miss Wooden, Patsy Kensit. (She's starring in some British TV shows and she still hasn't taken any acting classes.) Her final scene still freaks me out in the film as it does when I was at high school. I still didn't remember that much of it - I definitely didn't remember Joe Pesci's character being that irritating! SIT! STAY!

Lethal Weapon 2 is better than the first, and all the better for watching in HD - beats video anyday - but I still feel the ending felt ever so slightly wrong. He was meant to be killed off at the end, and it does feel like he should have been, rather than survive. But I guess the director saw dollar signs before his eyes, and made two more, which according to my boyfriend, sound pretty dismal. There are some scenes for the ladeez of Mel with a certain lack of clothes, so enjoy. And Patsy Kensit for the guys. It's definitely the better of the two.

They're back, they're bad. He's black, he's mad........2007-04-25

The topical plot of Lethal Weapon 2 may seem a little dated now, but Soud Av-ree-gan villains are always despicable and who doesn't love to them get blown away.

In this second installment in the LW series, Riggs and Murtaugh babysit FBI witness Leo Getz (a wimpy, eager to be friends Joe Pesci), much to their displeasure. Stuck with nothing much to do, they decide to investigate the criminals Leo is testifying against-a rude lot of Soud Av-ree-gan diplomats with immunity to commit as many crimes as they want. Riggs also takes a fancy to their secretary Rika (Patsy Kensit), but obviously their romance isn't going to last. She might as well have a death-clock counting down on her forehead.

Richard Donner seems more involved in making LW2 a better film than the original. This time he shoots in Panavision (why he didn't do this first time around I don't know), allows more time for character development and tries hard to make a political message out of the South African Apartheid situation. Even in his previous film Scrooged, which came out a year earlier, he had anti-apartheid messages. And, if you're really sad like me, you'll notice that Riggs and Rika bang their heads together when they first meet in the exact same way that Frank Cross and Claire Phillips do in Scrooged. And his then pro-NRA posters are still hanging around in the background. Donner later reversed his opinion on this organisation.

I always felt that the original Lethal Weapon was far too plain and straight-forward. It lacked spark in every way, but LW2 introduces more characters, has more sophisticated action and a better plot. Michael Kamen however pretty much cuts and pastes his score from the first and even rips-off his own Die Hard score in a couple of cues. This got worse in LW3.

The ending could have killed the series off had Riggs died, which is what Shane Black originally intended. We would have been spared the awful LW3 had this been so. But instead Riggs manages to fight off death and stay alive in Murtaughs arms despite being shot about 86 times. A nice touch having Bob Dylan's "Knockin' On Heaven's Door" playing over his potential last moments alive though.

After this the series became too comical and diluted. They SHOULD have killed him.

The HD-DVD shines with a beautiful 2.4:1 1080p image and has pretty damn good Dolby Digital+ sound. Extras are minimal I'm afraid. But still well worth the money.

This is the third time I've owned this movie. The HD experience is without a doubt the best way to watch it. The picture was crystal clear no more lines or glitches in the film just purity.If you have a Dolby Surround Sound that heightens the experience in sound. There is nothing like the total HD experience. I also have the original Leathal Weapon in HD and it's a great item too. Both in HD, both an HD experience, and both worth every penny!

In the fourth and reportedly final film of the Lethal Weapon series, director Richard Donner reunites with Mel Gibson and Danny Glover, who reprise their roles as Martin Riggs and Roger Murtaugh for one last hurrah in a film that is decidedly better than the third and first chapters. This time the pair are pitted against Jet Li, who plays the leader of a Chinese organized crime unit. Li, a veteran of hundreds of Hong Kong action films, more than holds his own against the more established team of Gibson, Glover, Renee Russo, and Joe Pesci with his subtle yet strong portrayal of the quietly irrepressible Wah Sing Ku. As always with the Lethal series, the plot is incredibly simple to follow: someone steals something, someone gets killed, and Murtaugh is reluctantly thrown into the mix while Riggs dives into the case with gleeful aplomb. As with the previous movies, we watch for the sheer action and chemistry alone. The action sequences throughout the fourth installment are exquisite, from the opening scene involving a flamethrower, a burning building, and a half-naked Murtaugh strutting like a chicken (don't ask, just watch), to the climactic showdown that pays genuine tribute to Jet Li's masterful martial art skills. As for chemistry, the bond between these characters is so strong by now that you sometimes feel like you're watching a TV series in its sixth season, such is the warm familiarity between the audience and the personalities on the screen. The humor is more fluid than ever, aided immeasurably by the casting of comedian Chris Rock, who like Li does a great job of making his presence known in some memorable verbal tirades that would bring a smile out of the Farrelly brothers. But it's the verbal and emotional jousting between Glover and Gibson that makes this fourth episode especially appealing; both are in peak form with great physical and verbal timing. One can only hope that if this is indeed the last of the Lethal films, that it won't be the last time we see Glover and Gibson together on screen. --Jeremy Storey

Again Martin Riggs(Mel Gibson) and Captain Roger Murtaugh(Danny Glover) are doing their dirty police work in this third and most recent sequel to 1987's Warner Bros. action-packed film LETHAL WEAPON. Now Martin and Lorna(Rene Russo) are husband and wife. Roger still has his wife Trish(Darlene Love) and their children(some are now young adults). Oscar-winner Joe Pesci returns as the annoying Leo Getz("Anything you need,Leo gets!"). Saturday Night Live veteran Chris Rock(BOOMERANG) and Jet Li join the cast in this installment. Eric Clapton brings another great song in this soundtrack,PILGRIM,from his 1998 album of the same title. And again,Richard Donner directed this film. I guess he woudn't have allowed anyone else to. This film was theatrically released on July 10,1998 and was just as successful as the three predecessors. Possibly,Gibson and Glover will reteam for future films,with or without Donner or anyone else aforementioned. I heard a rumor over a decade ago,that a fifth LW film was in the works along with this film. But I think it was in 1997 when this film was made. Maybe it was over a decade ago,that this film's script was written. If Gibson and Glover haven't yet received stars on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame,they should now.

Being a huge fan of both comedy and action films,I love seeing films that have both action and comedy in them being made and released. And despite how dark the first "Lethal Weapon" film was,the humor in LW2 and LW3 alllowed the idea of the fourth LW film being an action/comedy film to be a great idea. Not only was the idea to bring back Mel Gibson,Danny Glover,Joe Pesci,and Rene Russo for what has become the last LW film a excellent,the addition of Chris Rock was both smart and creative,while it was a pretty cool idea at the same time. Having Jet Li play the villian here was a nice touch,especially since Li now shares the honor with Gary Busey of being one of the two famous actors who share the honor of being one of the only two famous actors playing lead villains out of the LW series,for the LW film that Busey was in (LW1),and for the LW film that Li is in (LW4).

The story is well developed,and is sort of a direct follow-up to the first LW film,with leftovers and flashback information from both LW2 and LW3. A combination of the story for the first LW film and the story for the second LW film,this film finds Mel Gibson reprising his role as Martin Riggs,and Danny Glover reprising his role as Roger Murtaugh. In this installment of the LW films,not only do you find both Riggs and Murtaugh going through personal struggles in their own lives (Riggs being engaged to Rene Russo's character of Lorna Cole and Cole being pregnant,with Riggs not feeling like the time is right for him to be a father,while you find Murtaugh being worried about his daughter Rianne making him a grandfather,and what resulted in Rianne doing just that for Murtaugh),they have another tough assignment to deal with. That tough assignment is to bring down a murderous Chinese group by the name of The Triads,lead by a man named Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li's character)who bring illegal Chinese immigrants into America to begin new lives under slavery.
This becomes difficult for Riggs and Murtaugh not only because of the level of the assignment,but also due to Riggs and Murtaugh being so busy in their own lives during this period of time,and an official new member to their "team" of Riggs,Murtaugh,and Joe Pesci's Leo Getz. That official new member turns out to be a younger and more recent officer of the LAPD,Detective Lee Butters (Chris Rock),who finds himself having problems with Murtaugh that,once you discover them,will make you laugh and realize how far the producers of this movie expanded the first three LW films for this film itself.

As I already said,this movie is very good,but flawed in some areas,so let me address all of that. While it was nice to see Richard Donner and the producers of this film turn this film into an action/comedy with LW2,LW3,and even some of LW1 having signs of comedy to them,a problem results in this script due to that. The humor in this film works,but is usually tied into the movie story and results in less action,something that hurts this film a little bit. Don't get me wrong--the jokes here are good,but are still nowhere close to Chris Rock's humor outside of this film and Joe Pesci's humor in the first two "Home Alone" films. Also,the action in here is the weakest out of all of the action scenes from the first three LW films. This time,the action here is more martial arts than the original style of action from the first three LW films,making the movie a little bit hard to follow and deteriorating it from some--but not all--of its potential. For the last LW film,you would surely think that the action would be more real and more towards the style of the action that was used in the first three LW films--something that every film needs for its sequels.

There are some really good scenes in this movie though,which pulls this movie off. Not only do Mel Gibson and Danny Glover do a good job at bringing out the original personalities of Riggs and Murtaugh in this movie (a good sign,considering the fact that Gibson and Glover were a lot younger when they made the first three LW films,compared to Gibson and Glover both getting older during LW4's filming),Chris Rock is a good supplement to Gibson,Glover,and Joe Pesci. Rock being in this film allows this film to have more chemistry and humor in it,which works on behalf of Rock's scenes with not only Joe Pesci,but also the scenes that find how Rock's character of Butters is like around Murtaugh and to see how Butters,Riggs,Murtaugh,and Getz all work together as a team in this movie.
There is also a lot of energy that is brought out in this movie,which keeps it on a somewhat similiar level that the first three LW films were set on. The drama here,which is brought out very well by the script (most notably the graveyard scene with Gibson and Pesci at the end of the movie),does a good job at letting the producers of this movie make it more serious and more funny then the previous LW films,at the same time.

The "Behind The Scenes" feauture that appears at the end of this VHS is good,and a good substitute for the fact that as of this writing,LW4 has not been issued as a director's cut (something that the first three LW films got). It is also worth adding that a lot of good music from older bands/musicians (Van Halen,Eric Clapton,etc.)appear here,and prove themselves to be excellent supplements to this movie.

Overall,while this film could have been better,it still does a good job at living up to the standards that it was intended for,and is worth watching after you have watched LW1,LW2,and LW3 in order. Hopefully,this will be issued as a director's cut like the other three LW films were. I would say that this film does a good,worthwhile,and interesting way and job at ending the series of "Lethal Weapon" films.

The best lethal Weapon Since the first one.......2006-10-20

The Lethal Weapon series has been a great item in the whole action/comedy buddy genre. The first was instant classic from the 80's. Easily the best. All of its sequels were terrific, however just short of being as good. However this fourth installment I believe may come to being as good as the first. I would not say better, but I do not which one I would rather watch. Their are just so many great things to take note of in this film such as the car chase scene and the ifhgitng sequences performed by Jet Li. Brinigin in Jet ;Li was a great idea, plus compared to his other american films that followed (Romoeo Must Die, Kiss of the Dragon, The One) the movie ws deinetly one of his better films (even though he was not in the starring role). And the comedy could not have any better with the addition of Chris Rock. Although I do not think he's that funny in real life, his antics defiently gave me a good laugh in this movie. Anyway, here is the plot.
The movie starts of with Riggs (Mel Gibson)and Murtough (Danny Glover) facing off a pyromaniac. While they are attempting to take him down we learn that both Rigg's girlfriend Lorna (Rene Ruso) and Murtough's daughter Rianne (Tracy Wolfe) are pregnant.
The film then fowards to about nine moths later. While fishing Murtough and Riggs (And Leo Gets played by Joe Pesci) get into a gun battle with chinese mobsters. We learn that these guys were smuggling in chinese immigrants. The leader of the bad guys is Wah Sing Ku (Jet Li) who needs the immigrants to produce counterfeit money. He will then use this money in order to free the "4 fathers" (4 big chinese Criminals, one whom is Wah Sing Ku's brother) Also a young a detective named Lee Buttters (Chris Rock) joins the gang and helps the investigation. He also happens to be the father of Riannes baby but Murtough does not know that yet.

In short Lethal Weapon is a great fun film. Get it now a fun enjoyable time!

Great to see Danny and Mel together again.......2006-08-29

When "Casino" opened, some complained that Joe Pesci's performance was a retread of his work in "GoodFellas". I made the defence that his character was the same sort of person, and it would be inappropriate to act in a different way.

I'll make the same sort of defence for "Lethal Weapon 4", to anyone who claims that the series is settling down into a formula. It is, yes, but it was always about character, and these characters are carried not by a story which keeps giving them different things to do, or different interactions to have, but simply new lines and convincing performances. We get this with each new "Lethal Weapon" film, and "LW4" shows that the same thing can work yet again, making it about four times as good as you'd expect. Who cares if the witty banter is the same type as in the other three movies, it's still slightly different in its specifics, getting a little more outrageous each time. And even though Mel Gibson said a while back he had no interest in doing another "Lethal Weapon" film, no matter how good the script was, he and Danny Glover are putting in as much effort as they always have, making the screen sizzle with their chemistry.

This time, the plot involves some Chinese mobsters who Riggs and Murtaugh first meet they disrupt their fishing trip with gunplay. It transpires that they are attempting to buy back, from some other Chinese mobsters, some old dudes who lead the Triads. I wonder, in retrospect, how they got captured by anyone in the first place, if they're hard enough to be the leaders of the Triads, but never mind, because we get another enormously effective villain out of the Chinese element. His name is Wah Sing Ku, played by Jet Li, the star of those many violent martial arts movies that dealers at film fairs will tell you they have a copy of out in the car, with Japanese subtitles, but they couldn't get it in any other way, it's banned! Li creates a cold, sadistic-yet-disciplined scumbag, who deserves every second of Riggs' disgusted looks. He does this by not changing his facial expression from a totally mastered look of calculation, even when he breaks out into spectacular moves of violence. These are also performed skillfully, and Wah Sing is such a quick cat that, at one point, he even dodges a bullet. The guy is as seemingly invincible as the villains who inhabit the higher levels of "Mortal Kombat".

The action sequences are terrific, and I don't just mean entertaining and well-done, I mean exciting. That's a rare thing, especially for a cops-and-robbers comedy, but the slick cinematography and the wonderfully energetic crunch-bang-boom sound stirs us until we're dissolved in the onscreen activity.

Of course, we still have to have the "Lethal Weapon" humour here, and the members of the trusted supporting cast are all back to enrich it, with Leo Getz (Pesci) thinking he's become a private investigator, and Lorna Cole (Rene Russo) pregnant, as is Murtaugh's daughter Rianne. The latter has been knocked up by Lee Butters, a cop who hangs around with Riggs and Murtaugh, and who is very funny despite being played by Chris Rock.

"Lethal Weapon 4" is not as good as the other three films in its series, borrowing their heart as a substitute for one of its own, and certainly without one outstandingly memorable line, which the others all had. It's all glossy, cocky surface. But likeably glossy, hilariously cocky, and difficult to resist.

The series had pretty much run it's course, but Jet Li gave this movie a real punch. As a fan, it was really interesting to see him as a villain. I was scared of him.

Mel Gibson set aside his art-house credentials to star as a crazy cop paired with a stable one (Danny Glover) in this full-blown 1987 Richard Donner action picture. The most violent film in the series (which includes three sequels), it is also the edgiest and most interesting. After Gibson's character jumps off a building handcuffed to a man, and Gary Busey (as a cold, efficient enforcer) lets his hand get burned without flinching, there is a sense that anything can happen, and it usually does. Donner's strangely messy visual and audio style doesn't make a lot of aesthetic sense, but it stuck with all four movies. It may well have appeared fresh and exciting back in 1987 but Lethal Weapon is soaked in so many 80s clichés it's sometimes hard to take it seriously. First of all we have the maverick cop on the edge who doesn't play by the rules but gets results. Second we have him being teamed up with a by-the-book partner. Third...it's all about drugs. There are countless more, from LA setting to the Vietnam vet psycho stuff and even all the way down to the deep voiced trailer guy saying stuff like 'They'll have to work together even if it kills them' and so-forth.

Opening with long travelling shot of LA, complete with an agonizingly 80s credit front, Lethal Weapon begins with the death of a porn actress, high on cocktail of white powders, who thinks she can fly. But what she really gets is a 20-storey descent to the parking lot, the fast way. I first saw Lethal Weapon on TV in about 1990 and this scene had pretty much everything cut from it, the nudity, the drugs, it's amazing people actually made sense of films back then.

Anyways, before I go off on a tangent rant, the dead girl is actually the daughter of a crooked banker involved in heroin smuggling. LAPD Sargeant Roger Murtaugh is his old pal and takes the case, but not before being teamed-up with renegade, suicidal cop Martin Riggs. Together 'They don't make the rules, they break them' and 'They'll have to survive each other first' and 'blah blah blah!' Honestly, the wafer-thin plot of Lethal Weapon has truly perished with time. Bad guys smuggle heroin, cops kill them for it. There are multiple, totally absurd elements such as Riggs being a Vietnam vet despite only being about 30 at the time (meaning he was 19 when the conflict ended), the rolling around with the gun firing a gun blindly but still hitting targets is hard to swallow, the martial arts showdown seems to come out of nowhere and belongs in a different film, kids recognizing tiny Special Forces tattoos from a significant distance and the contrived death of Murtaugh's daughter's never seen boyfriend.

In fact, a LOT of this film is contrived and rather ramshackle. Shane Black IS a great writer but this film is just too underdeveloped. We never get to see the heroin or learn anything about how the villains do business. There's not any decent amount of mystery solving or police procedure and there is absolutely NO reason at all for the film being set at Christmas. There is no festive, yuletide atmosphere or Xmasy themes. Plus, with the film being set in LA, Christmas is all blue skies and sun. It adds nothing at all.

What makes Lethal Weapon watchable however are the characters and the silly banter between them. Riggs and Murtaugh really seem to click with each other as pals and I think it's this that kept the sequels coming rather than the need to tell another macho action story set in LA.

And I do wish that Michael Kamen never used those damn saxophones! The score can frequently be quite jarring and annoying whenever those things start screeching. I have the limited edition score CD, but skip those tracks whenever I stick it on. But since Kamen has died in recent years I will spare him my rant over his misjudged score.

Unwisely regarded as a classic, Lethal Weapon only exhibits how to weave 40 million clichés into a macho action movie. The humor is what I like best, I can leave the rest to stagnate back in the 80s, where it really belongs.

The HD-DVD sports a great 1.78:1 1080p transfer with Dolby Digital+ sound. Extras are limited to a trailer and deleted scenes. Warner should really have issued the Director's Cut on HD. But still, it's a great step-up from the SD DVD.

Bad hair day Mel? .......2007-02-27

I chose this film thinking it would be Mel Gibson when he was still good. Yes, he was good, but I'd seen it many years ago, when I was still at school, and didn't remember. Until I was watching the film and thinking that I'd already seen this before. I had an inkling that I'd already seen it, when the girl jumped off the building (I think I had a moan about why she had to be almost topless the first time round) and then Mel gets out of bed. I definitely remember that scene! Damn.

The thing about watching Lethal Weapon now, is that it's been either spoofed too many times or it's been copied so many times. Almost every 80s cop movie is like this. Good cop, bad cop. Neither wants a partner. Then they realise they can't work without each other. And it spawns some mediocre sequels. In the case of the spoofing, see Loaded Weapon, with Emilio Estevez and Samuel L Jackson.

There was nothing particularly stand out about this film - apart from Mel's hair, which was just awful - I liked the pairing of Mel & Danny, and I liked the albino Gary Busey, playing a bad guy, who doesn't even flinch at his arm getting burnt with a lighter. Ouch. The guy about to commit suicide from the top of the building and then having Mel's character handcuffed to him was the stand out scene for me, not including the opening scene.

The reason I'm only giving this 2 stars (which isn't going to go down to well with some reviewers) is because if I'd seen it when it originally came out, I probably could have given a higher rating. But we've seen it all before these days, and yes, it may have been a brilliant movie then, but not so much for me.

For me, I would like to see another sequel to this. Maybe Mel could grow his hair again? I mean, there is another Indiana Jones on the way, and another Die Hard. Lets revive Lethal Weapon shall we? You're never too old, as Harrison Ford is proving and Mel and Danny are both younger. They could still do it. Couldn't they? Maybe Mel could save his reputation.

Most reviewers consider this a classic, but in my case, it was worthy of a watch, but I don't remember being that impressed by it the first time round. (So much so that I didn't realise I'd already seen it!) If you saw it the first time, relive the happy memories, and watch it on HD, cos it amazing. (Bearing in mind I did see it on VIDEO, so anything is better than that.)

THE example of 80's action-buddie-cop-comedies; a "B+" .......2007-02-19

I don't think I can say very much that hasn't already been said, so I'll try and keep this brief: the "let's not take things too seriously" tone of this movie (helped largely by the musical score and the quick humor that runs throughout) are, for me, what make this movie so watchable - and rewatchable. I've seen the movie dozens of times now and it just doesn't get old. The action itself is perhaps starting to get a little quaint by today's standards, but it's the aforementioned tone and humor of the movie (aided by the perfectly cast Mel Gibson and Danny Glover) that still give it vibrancy and make it so enjoyable. This really is Mel Gibson's defining role in that he can play both the dramatic and comedic parts so well. If movies were defined solely by the number of times I've stopped to watch them while channel surfing, 'Lethal Weapon' would be at the top of my list - it's very entertaining and just a lot of fun.

In this Warner Bros. action-packed film,Roger Murtaugh(Danny Glover) is a husband and a father of three who returns to the force after an extended hiatus. He is first seen soaking in his bathtub,then retreats downstairs to the kitchen with his beard shaved down to a moustache. He is far from enthused about his partner-in-crime,Martin Riggs(Mel Gibson). Martin is a mentally disabled individual who is a "lethal weapon". Martin often thinks he's a firearm of some sort. This behavior frequently aggravates Roger. But,they end up making a great team and becoming best buddies. Watch for a special appearance by Gary Busey(The Buddy Holly Story) as the criminal who's wanted. Darlene Love is Roger's wife Trish. Love is a singer as well who had a hit in 1963,(Today I Met)THE BOY I'M GONNA MARRY. Director Richard Donner reteamed with Gibson and Glover for three sequels released respectively in 1989,1992 and 1998.
