A Disney "classic" that actually is a classic, Dumbo should be part of your video collection whether or not you have children. The storytelling was never as lean as in Dumbo, the songs rarely as haunting (or just plain weird), the characters rarely so well defined. The film pits the "cold, cruel, heartless" world that can't accept abnormality against a plucky, and mute, hero. Jumbo Jr. (Dumbo is a mean-spirited nickname) is ostracized from the circus pack shortly after his delivery by the stork because of his big ears. His mother sticks up for him and is shackled. He's jeered by children (an insightful scene has one boy poking fun at Dumbo's ears, even though the youngster's ears are also ungainly), used by the circus folk, and demoted to appearing with the clowns. Only the decent Timothy Q. Mouse looks out for the little guy. Concerns about the un-PC "Jim Crow" crows, who mock Dumbo with the wonderful "When I See an Elephant Fly," should be moderated by remembering that the crows are the only social group in the film who act kindly to the little outcast. If you don't mist up during the "Baby Mine" scene, you may be legally pronounced dead. --Keith Simanton

5 out of 5 stars Dumbo.......2007-06-21

Disney's fourth full length-feature (running just over one hour) remains a powerful, poignant family film, offering kids a clear and useful lesson on the virtues of tolerance. Dumbo's initial cruel treatment is still hard to watch, since we've all witnessed similar behavior. The empathy we feel for this misfit elephant only makes his ultimate triumph more satisfying. A defining classic in Disney's film legacy. Best for smaller fry.

What a wonderful original Disney movie and such great quality. It is nice to know that you can still get the original movies in a new format, especially all the extras.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed feelings on this one.......2007-05-07

One of the interesting things about having children (among the many wonderful and interesting things) is getting the chance to re-experience childhood and to see movies I enjoyed as a child. I was somewhat disappointed with "Dumbo," though, because of the scene in which the baby elephant Dumbo (who is ostracized by other elephants for having oversized ears) gets drunk, making it seem as if underage drinking is a harmless, playful activity that produces fun and funky hallucinations of dancing pink elephants. Other than that scene, the movie had a good message about overcoming adversity and turning personal weaknesses into triumphant strengths.

We bought this movie as a birthday gift for our 2 year old grandson and now it's his favorite movie...An old favorite renewed for us and for his parents!

The Crow set the standard for dark and violent comic-book movies (like Spawn or director Alex Proyas's superior follow-up, Dark City), but it will forever be remembered as the film during which star Brandon Lee (son of martial arts legend Bruce Lee) was accidentally killed on the set by a loaded gun. The filmmakers were able to digitally sample what they'd captured of Lee's performance and piece together enough footage to make the movie releasable. Indeed, it is probably more fascinating for that post-production story than for the tale on the screen. The Crow is appropriately cloaked in ominous expressionistic shadows, oozing urban dread and occult menace from every dank concrete crack, but it really adds up to a simple and perfunctory tale of ritual revenge. Guided by a portentous crow (standing in for Poe's raven), Lee plays a deceased rock musician who returns from the grave to systematically torture and kill the outlandishly violent gang of hoodlums who murdered him and his fiancée the year before. The film is worth watching for its compelling visuals and genuinely nightmarish, otherworldly ambience. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Amazing........2007-06-02

First time I saw this film, I watched it on VHS. Not that great. It was extremely dark and I had a hard time seeing things. I popped in the DVD and WOW! I could see what was going on! It's great. The story is beautiful, dark but powerful. I highly recommend this film. Especially this eddition.

5 out of 5 stars classic.......2007-05-27

1994 saw the release of Alex Proyas' cult-classic "The Crow". The plot of the film is pretty straightforward; a vigilante killer, one year after the murder of himself and his girlfriend, goes out for revenge. In terms of the plot there aren't a lot of twists and the film is, dare I say...predictable...You know exactly how the film will unfold twenty minutes into it. Apart from the fact the vigilante has risen from the dead, movies with similar plots have been done before. Still, almost immediately after its release, "the Crow" achieved cult-status, enjoying a large, dedicated following. Why is that, exactly?

One reason that "The Crow" has struck a nerve with people is its theme of love defying death. The reunion scene between Eric Draven (Brandon Lee) and Shelly Webster (Sofia Shinas) is one of most bittersweet moments in film that I can recall. The relationship between the "good" characters (and there are very few) is also quite touching. Sarah (Rochelle Davis) is a quite likeable kid and there is genuine warmth in her scenes with her dysfunctional mother, Lee and Sergeant Albrecht (Ernie Hudon).

Most of the thugs in this film, apart from "Top Dollar" (Michael Wincott) are pretty generic. They are so vile, however, that it's satisfying when Lee takes them all down. The dark atmosphere, (dark streets, urban decay, cemeteries) cinematography, and action sequences are all quite exciting and well done.

Even if the film, at its core, (vigilante killer after bad guys) doesn't have the most original story line, the rich charectors, setting and themes of friendship and undying love more than make up for it. The abundance of excellent music (NIN, The Cure, RATM, there isn't a bad song on the soundtrack, infact) throughout the film is also a great bonus.

While Brandon Lee, sadly, never got a chance to really develop as an actor, his role of Eric Draven in this film no doubt ensures that his legacy has at least one classic.

Received product very quickly and on time, and product was in very good condition... extremely satisfied with this order!

5 out of 5 stars Must See.......2007-03-08

If you ever wanted to see the greatest movie of all times this it. Brandon Lee is by the far the best of all of the series. It is a shame that he had to die so young.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies of the 1990's.......2007-02-28

It is a tragedy that Brandon Lee died while making this film. Had he lived, the Crow sequels would have been much better.

The Crow is an action packed movie that moves at a quick pace. It set the standard for the dark cinema of the 1990's.

Kevin Costner's 1990 epic won a bundle of Oscars for a moving, engrossing story of a white soldier (Costner) who singlehandedly mans a post in the 1870 Dakotas, and becomes a part of the Lakota Sioux community who live nearby. The film may not be a masterpiece, but it is far more than the sum of good intentions. The characters are strong, the development of relationships is both ambitious and careful, the love story between Costner and Mary McDonnell's character is captivating. Only the third-act portrait of white intruders as morons feels overbearing, but even that leads to a terribly moving conclusion. Costner's direction is assured, the balance of action and intimacy is perfect--what more could anyone want outside of an unqualified masterpiece? --Tom Keogh

1 out of 5 stars gives you that cozy feeling!.......2007-05-14

Delightful yarn about an American soldier who betrays his country by providing firearms and military assistance to the enemy, then assists in the massacre of several of his fellow soldiers when they attempt to bring him to justice.

Great for the whole family!

5 out of 5 stars Monumental Achievement!.......2007-05-14

I truly loved this film--the acting, driecting, writing, editing, and music were all superb. The scenery, the fighting, the romance, the humor, the buffalo hunt, the developing friendship--they were magnificent. Everything about this film was believable, inspiring, and involving. I saw this movie in 1990 and liked it, but this time, in 2007, I loved it, certainly enough to want to see it many more times . Buy it and keep it.

5 out of 5 stars An American Masterpiece.......2007-05-13

Occasionally the stars align, all the pieces are together and working and the end result is a work of group brilliance. DWW meets that standard. Direction, music, acting, story, art direction, everything works. The result is a masterpiece to be viewed over and over.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, but what about disc 2?.......2007-05-11

Dear viewers and reviewers,

has anybody noticed, that in the 2 disc Collector's Edition, disc two bears the same material as on the second side of disc one?

When reviewing a product should be specified as is and not by its merits alone.

Unfortunately on the copy I did receive, following special features were totally missing:

1. No Dances photo montage with introduction by Ben Glass;

2. No Poster Gallery;

3. No TV Spots;

4. No Theatrical Trailer;

5. No ...and More! as advertised so pompously on the outer jacket...

All you get, and this already on the double-sided disc One, is the original Making of... and two separate commentaries, as well as John Barry's Music Video.

That's it!

Is it a packaging error? Go figure.

But you certainly don't find the above mentioned, and advertised items.

The movie is is presented on the two sided disc in its lengthened version and in full 2.35:1 screen ratio. The sound, as correctly stated is in Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround Stereo and is excellent.

I don't mind so much the missing specials, since the movie alone is a tiny masterpiece in its own right, but I do object to some practices, as to print things on sleeves, that do not correspond to the actual contents of the DVD box.

The second disc is just a repeat of part two of disc one...

Sorry people, but I thought you ought to know this, before buying it.

5 out of 5 stars Good Quilty Movies..........2007-05-07

I am happy to say that the movie I got was full version no uncut scenes or deleted parts If you like romance,adventure,drama this is the movie to purchase it is a great movie I would buy from amazon again anytime its fast,great prices and enjoyable easy way to get what you want..

Set in the chillingly possible future of 2054, Steven Spielberg's Minority Report is arguably the most intelligently provocative sci-fi thriller since Blade Runner. Like Ridley Scott's "future noir" classic, Spielberg's gritty vision was freely adapted from a story by Philip K. Dick, with its central premise of "Precrime" law enforcement, totally reliant on three isolated human "precogs" capable (due to drug-related mutation) of envisioning murders before they're committed. As Precrime's confident captain, Tom Cruise preempts these killings like a true action hero, only to run for his life when he is himself implicated in one of the precogs' visions. Inspired by the brainstorming of expert futurists, Spielberg packs this paranoid chase with potential conspirators (Max Von Sydow, Colin Farrell), domestic tragedy, and a heartbreaking precog pawn (Samantha Morton), while Cruise's performance gains depth and substance with each passing scene. Making judicious use of astonishing special effects, Minority Report brilliantly extrapolates a future that's utterly convincing, and too close for comfort. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Good movie despite Cruise........2007-06-16

While I've never been a Tom Cruise fan, he is good in this movie, bearable even, and it's extremely entertaining. It's refreshing to see a science fiction movie presenting an interesting idea rather than a series of special effects. Here, the special effects serve the story, and with Spielberg involved you can expect it to be done well, which it is.

This is one of those movies where I don't think it's necessary to know more than the basic premise, so I won't go into the story.

I highly recommend this.

5 out of 5 stars nice plot.......2007-06-08

this movie is worth buying, the plot and the actors are very good. i'd recommmend this to everybody.

5 out of 5 stars Best SF classic of the new millenium yet .......2007-06-06

Every decade seems to spawn no more then 10 major SF classics worth watching again and again ( my personal litmus test of quality).The 80's seem to have the lead in this field (Blade Runner ,Alien I & II , Empire Strikes Back , Conan , Philadelphia Experiment , The Abyss , Back to the Future Trilogy , They Live , Star Track Wrath Of Khan , some others as well ). The 90's OTOH were a disappointment , only a few Sci-Fi flicks seem to me to have been memorable : Starship Troopers ,Total Recall Blade I and The Matrix .
I was thrilled therefore in 2002 when Minority Report came out .Seemed that the new decade was off to a great start. The overreliance of CGI spawning soulless forgettable tripe like the new Star Wars series snozefest seem to have been overcome .MR arguably stacked up right up there with the classics of the 80's and the balance between storyline and CGI seemed to have been struck . . Sadly it's 2007 and the only a few other movies which seem to have entered my personal hall of fame in this field are (more or less ) War of the Worlds (Spielberg again) and Apocalypto . I Robot barely makes it . Looks like the first 10 years of the new millennium are going to come up the driest yet as far as Sci-Fi classics go .

4 out of 5 stars a top notch sci fi thriller.......2007-02-26

A great science fiction thriller is also one of Spielberg's strongest films. It earned four Saturn Awards, including Best Science Fiction Film and Best Direction. It also earned an Academy Award nomination for best sound Editing. A Great plot is the key to any compelling science fiction film and this one is very thought provoking. set in Washinton D.C. during the year 2054 Thanks to three "precogs and technology built around their ability to see murders before they happen, the city has gone six years without a homicide. The group making use of the precogs is called the "Department of Pre-Crime"; the police officers and detectives within the department are empowered to act on their foreknowledge, arresting people who are about to commit a murder, and imprisoning them without a trial in a "Hall of Containment" using technology even crueler than that used to make use of the precogs. The story asks many moral and ethical questions about what types of freedoms would you give up to live in a safe invoronment. The film has cool gadgets and weapons, and new hip looking transit system and a more rundown looking part of the city called the "sprawl". The Tom Cruise Character has depth and has a tragic past that makes his plight very believable. I love this movie and watch it often.

3 out of 5 stars tom cruisers will love it.......2006-12-27

Saw the movie on DVD today. I'm not a great Cruise fan, but have watched about a third of his movies, to me it seems he plays the same character over and over again in most of them. I did like him a lot in Born on the 4th of July, but in all the action/special effects movies he does the acting/characters never vary much, kind of like Jack Nicholson in his movies, to me he is the same in almost every one. I thought the idea interesting, understand from reading other reviews that it is based on an short story but as usual changed some from it. I had a couple of problems that may have to do with not understanding a portion of it or missing something that was said, or just need to watch it again to make it a little clearer. When Cruise and Sydow confront each other at the end, it is never made clear to me if Sydow had 1. had Cruises' son killed, or 2. the son had been kidnapped by someone and has been raised within this other household and is alive and well, or 3. actually been killed by some psyhco. Also, he is told after the eye surgery he will go blind if he takes off bandages before 12 hrs are up, but he lifts it for a few seconds for the "spiders", but didn't seem to have any effect on him. I also thought most of the special effects were good, but didn't like the Buck Rogers outfits of the police, and some of the effects like the cars on the highways reminded me of old japanese monster movies. I liked Samantha Morton as one of the seers of the future. I didn't realize that is was an approx. 2-1/2 hr movie, about 2 hrs into it I kept thinking, shouldn't it be wrapping up and kind of thought it was until it was revealed that the man Cruise thought had killed his son was setting him up, and a new twist in the story began, but that's one reason it was good, introducing new twists/plots at unexpected points in a movie.

1. No Dances photo montage with introduction by Ben Glass;

2. No Poster Gallery;

3. No TV Spots;

4. No Theatrical Trailer;

Director Joe Johnston has always had an entertaining sense of adventure, and with Hidalgo he proves it in spades. It's yet another underrated film for Johnston (along with such enjoyable popcorn flicks as The Rocketeer and Jurassic Park III), dismissed by many critics but a welcome treat for anyone drawn to good ol'-fashioned movie excitement. In his first role since playing Aragorn in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Viggo Mortensen brings handsome appeal to his low-key portrayal of Frank T. Hopkins, a real-life long-distance horse racer who, as the movie opens, has witnessed the appalling massacre of Native Americans at Wounded Knee in 1890. Drifting into Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show, he agrees to compete, with his trusty mustang, Hidalgo, in "The Ocean of Fire," a treacherous 3,000-mile horse race across the Arabian desert. Toss in a bunch of conspiring competitors, a noble sheik (Omar Sharif), his lovely daughter (Zuleikha Robinson), and enough fast-paced danger to fill 133 minutes, and you've got a rousing, humorous, and lightly spiritual adventure that's a lot of fun to watch. It hardly matters that it's almost pure fiction (the real Hopkins was known by many as "a pathological liar"). More important is the love of movies and moviemaking that Johnston so delightfully conveys. --Jeff Shannon

Description

A sandstorm of epic proportions. A swarm of locusts so massive it obliterates the relentless sun. Deadly traps that defy imagination. These are just a few of the astonishing obstacles Frank T. Hopkins, the greatest long-distance racer ever, faces in the rousing action-adventure HIDALGO. Based on a true story and starring Viggo Mortensen (THE LORD OF THE RINGS Trilogy), Hopkins (Mortensen) and his mustang Hidalgo enter the ultimate extreme sport of its time -- the Ocean Of Fire. Underdogs challenging the finest Arabian horses and riders, they must not only survive the grueling race across 3,000 miles of the Arabian Desert's punishing terrain, but they must thwart the evil plots of competitors who vow victory at all costs! A great story of personal triumph, amazing special effects, and memorable characters make HIDALGO one of the most thrilling adventures ever.

4 out of 5 stars The kind of movie I never get tired of seeing.......2007-05-11

My profile. 43 yo (and getting better). No qulaifications as a movie critic whatsoever

This is one of those adventure movies I just cannot stop seeing... everything is perfect, the production, the choosing of the actors, the action.. and the love between man and horse united in such way that makes you actually hear the horse's thoughts..

5 out of 5 stars Painted Horse.......2007-03-15

Know one thought Frank Hopkins horse would win, Hidalgo went the 3,000 miles, over the desert of fire. This horse out ran a sand storm, This movie will be my favorite for a long tine.

5 out of 5 stars How did I miss this?.......2007-02-20

When I read about the attachment Viggo Mortensen developed with the horses he rode in Lord of the Rings and later Hidalgo, I decided to buy this DVD. But how did I miss this movie to begin with? Omar Sharif is in it.

This is the fictionalized account of endurance rider Frank T. Hopkin's race in the Arabian desert, and an excellent blend of history, storytelling, movie magic, crossed cultures, and a test of endurance by man and horse. The story starts out with a Ghost Dance at Wounded Knee, in 1890. It takes an honest look at the fate of Native Americans, the American Mustang, and the inevitable rewriting of history by a conqueror, even as it provides an uplifting, sometimes humorous, action-packed story. I loved it, and my husband wanted to watch the DVD a second time within a few days. He rarely does that.

5 out of 5 stars Destined for Greatness.......2007-01-17

The first 10 seconds of the film lays out the theme; transformation. An epic work that is right up there with the swashbuckling films of all times. A must see. We discover again what it means to be genuine, honorable, forgiving, courageous, trustworthy and dependable. To understand that the only one that can stop you from reaching your destiny- is you. To realize that when you remove barriers from between nations, there is an over-flow of love, anticipation and eagerness to enjoy your fellow man. And finally the movie reveals that all of us thirst for freedom, whether here in America or in a far-away land.

5 out of 5 stars Hidalgo.......2007-01-17

A sweet cowboy story with a typical into the sunset ending, this movie is based on the life of Frank Hopkins, a real live long distance racer from American's past. I reccomend this movie for all those who like to see the underdog compete with the big boys and win one.

4 out of 5 stars Pippi is cool!.......2007-05-29

My best friend and I have grown up watching this movie. Now that we're older, we have begun to notice some of the corny special effects and lines, but I still think The New Adventures of Pippi Longstocking is cool!! I know that the way Pippi is portrayed in the movie is a bit of a character stretch, but, quite honestly, I saw the movie before reading any of the books. If it had been the other way around, I might not like the movie as much as I do. For me, this movie is a lot of fun memories.

4 out of 5 stars Pippi makes the kids say yippie.......2007-05-13

My kids love this movie. They didn't want to watch it because "Dad that movie is old." Yes it is old as far as they (9 yr old boy and 7 yr old girl) are concerned but I bribed them into watching it and they loved it. My daughter watches this several times a week. I think my son has a thing for Pippi. This is a good family movie and unlike the "family" movies they put out today you don't have to hit the FF button because there are no family un-friendly parts. Buy this movie and spend an evening with the kids. You'll be glad you did.

5 out of 5 stars Coming into your town.........2007-02-19

Worth it simply for the sentimental value. Seriously, it's pippy longstocking!

5 out of 5 stars Well Deserved.......2007-01-31

This product was cheap and brand-new. I have no complaints. The service was quick.

5 out of 5 stars Pippi Still Rocks.......2007-01-11

I couldn't find this movie anywhere. I had decided to dress up as Pippi for Halloween, and my children didn't know who I was talking about. When it arrived, I was so excited to share it w/ my children. They loved it. My oldest was singing the songs for days. I am so glad that something that I loved so much as a child is now loved by my children.

After Elvis Presley got out of the army in 1960, he was instantly ushered into this Paramount movie about an Oklahoma singer who (surprise) gets out of the army and wants to open a club. Making a potentially lucrative bet that he can seduce a cabaret singer (Juliet Prowse), Elvis instead falls in love. Refurbished from his rockabilly roots into a slicker model for early-'60s pop, the Elvis of this movie is the one who made almost 30 more just like it. The songs include the title track, plus "It's Not Good Enough for You," "Tonight Is So Right for Love," and "Wooden Heart." Directed by Norman Taurog, a studio veteran who made his first film in 1928 and worked numerous times with Presley as well as Jerry Lewis. --Tom Keogh

The DVD is very sharp and clear. There are no glitches in it like in some of the ones I have purchased other places. My husband and I are thoroughly enjoying it.

4 out of 5 stars elvis: revisited.......2006-11-14

When i first saw this mvie many years i wasn't too impresed,mainly because i expeted too much.Now having reviewed it again i find its actually a fun movie. A lot of the times we spoil our own enjoyment by expecting something to be what it was not meant to be and by being too bigoted in our views.having said that i guess over time we become a more forgiving of its flaws ad short commings.This is a perfect example of learning to enjoy something for what it is , and i did. picture quality is fine execpt for a couple of superimposed background scenes which arent perfect but that is a flaw common to the time it was made. The sound is also very acceptable.Go ahead and enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Elvis with Julia Prowse.......2005-08-21

As Elvis once said this woman has a body that would make a preacher stamp his foot. Her dancing (as a professional dancer myself) is esquisite, she moves like a cat, and Elvis was as charming and charismatic as always, I enjoyed this movies when it first came out and never tire of watching it, and am going to purchase it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, Brilliant, Terrific.......2005-07-22

To me, this is one of the very best Elvis Presley musical extravaganza. Briliant movie - loved all the songs. What a superb DVD!!!

2 out of 5 stars Too Much "Money" business.......2005-02-23

2003 plays like 2nd generation video, Elvis is fuzzy, not clear.
"Too many re-recordings", older originals a better buy.
I'm gonna try for an OLD vhs 1st release. The audio is now STEREO-Hi-FI. Stereo was started with THE Beatles "Rubber Soul", and "After-Math", by The Rolling Stones. In the 1956 time era for original Elvis Presley, there was mono. Anything re-created in 'Stereo' is not original Elvis.
Me; I got the stamped "10-10-57" Jailhouse Rock 45 - $.057c! in 1957. Music questions: apa_musica@yahoo.com 51 years experience!

Vanilla Sky reunites director Cameron Crowe (Jerry Maguire) with über-playboy Tom Cruise, adds another sexy Cruz (Penélope) and Cameron Diaz for good measure, and delivers a wildly entertaining, bizarre venture into erotic science fiction. Adapted near exactly from Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Amenábar's 1997 romantic thriller Open Your Eyes, the film follows David Aames (Cruise) as he falls from his graceful Manhattan perch of inordinate wealth, good looks, and newfound love with Sofia (Cruz) because of severe facial disfigurement in a car accident caused by a suicidal ex-lover (Diaz). What at first promises to be a conventional allegory of redemption via true love is turned on its head as Cruise's character, reduced to wearing a latex mask and spurned by his friends, wins back his princess only after a miracle of plastic surgery restores his former beauty. A series of plot twists follows as waking life, technological advances, and nightmares flip-flop to dizzying effect and David ultimately comes face to face with his own mortality. Despite a final conceit to some vague morality, the appeal of the film is the wonderfully callous message conveyed by the rest of it (money and physical beauty equal happiness) through an unabashed vanity perfectly embodied by Cruise and Cruz. A delicious, decadent treat. --Fionn Meade

Spoiler Alert: Skip this review if you don't want to know the ending.

Cruise's rich, handsome and happily shallow character has bought himself a custom-made Heaven. This heaven comes complete with his favorite sky, a vanilla-colored sky patterned after his late mother's Monet painting. The catch is that he doesn't know he's dreaming and that his peculiar heaven will eventually turn hellish. In fact, after 150 years of dreaming of the bliss of finding and winning his dearest and most true love Sofia, he first suspects and then rages that it's not real at all, but a nightmare. Strands of Hindu mysticism are subtly woven through this film, hinting of something beautifully infinite and strange. The movie's soundtrack heightens the mood and mind-bending confusion of this film, and it may turn the screws to your mind at times, leaving you spinning and feeling off center. If you don't understand the bad and the good vibrations that flow through this film, then--to paraphrase Penelope Cruz's character--maybe you will in another lifetime, when you are a cat.
In summary, I think this movie is worth watching more than once; so go ahead and get the DVD. There are many things to admire about it. For me, the romantic idea of being blissfully and timelessly sustained in a dream about finding one's true love is sweeter than a vanilla sky.

5 out of 5 stars Living Vs. Existing........2007-02-09

Based upon a foreign film that translates into English as OPEN YOUR EYES (ABRE LOS OJOS), VANILLA SKY gets its title from a Claude Monet painting, "Seine at Argenteuil" that the film's protagonist, David Aames (Tom Cruise) has upon a wall. The painting is sometimes mistakenly referred to as "Vanilla Sky" because of the color that Monet used for the sky in the painting. The misnomer of the painting's title is a key in understanding and appreciating the film because early on it becomes clear that this is a movie that likes to play with one's mind and the things that take place aren't necessarily real.

VANILLA SKY revolves around the character of David Aames. David is the son and heir of a international media tycoon. Most everyone close to him, including his best friend Brain Shelby (Jason Lee) see David as a spoiled brat who has no appreciation whatsoever for all the gifts that have been given to him since birth. He takes advantage of almost everyone he meets and lives in a fantasy world of wine, women, and song. At the start of the film David is involved in a serious relationship with a beautiful blonde named Julie Gianni (Cameron Diaz). They have been dating for sometime and are romantically linked, but David doesn't feel their relationship is as serious as Julie does. Whereas Julie is waiting for David to commit and propose, David sees her as simply being a "friend with benefits."

At his birthday party, David meets a woman that he finds so captivating and fascinating that he falls immediately in love with her. The woman, Sophia Serrano (Penelope Cruz) is the opposite of everything that he found attractive in Julie. David ends up walking her back to her place and spends the night talking with her. To him, Sophia is the woman of his dreams. She is the woman he would choose to marry. Unfortunately for David, Julie doesn't take things very well. She reminds him of some of the unavoidable truths about their relationship. Julie and David are involved in a car crash and when he opens his eyes, he is living in a different world.

His face has been reconstructed and at first things seem normal. But then David starts having nightmares. Soon the nightmares of his dreams seem to mix with his day to day life. He finds himself unable to distinguish the difference. Sophia is Julie and Julie is Sophia. The world is too confusing and David longs to sleep so that he can return to his dreams. Pleasant, pleasant dreams filled with the Sophia he met at the party and skies colored in vanilla.

I really don't like Tom Cruise much. He does have talent, but his large ego and cocky attitude take away from every picture I've ever seen him act in. Therefore, I was reluctant to see VANILLA SKY. I wish I would have watched the movie long ago.

The movie is a strange romantic drama sci-fi picture that tackles some huge issues. How do we live our lives? Would you rather live your life in a comfortable existence filled with superficial happiness or would you rather live an exciting, though often painful life filled with wonder and awe, truth and beauty, but only occasional moments of happiness? This is a decision that each one of us is actually presented with daily. We might not always recognize it as such, but it is and the way that choice is presented in the film makes VANILLA SKY such a powerful and engaging piece of cinema.

Cruise's ego works well for most of the film, though it denies the audience from completely identifying and empathizing with the plight of David Aames. Cruise is a great jerk, but not a very good reformed man. However, his gift at playing spoiled id-driven men sucks the audience into the action of VANILLA SKY from the beginning and even though one is never convinced of David's reformation, Cruise's performance/presence keeps the audience engaged throughout the film. Penelope Cruz reminds me of a Spanish Audrey Hepburn and though she isn't in the movie a great deal, she shines in the moments that she is. Cameron Diaz is a beauty and movie star, but overcomes her celebrity. She does a wonderful job of portraying Julie, an everywoman character that many women who have been stepped upon by men can relate to. Julie isn't on screen very long either, but when she is she raises some important questions about love, relationships, and sex in American society. Another important actor in the film is Jason Lee. Lee portrays David's best friend Brian, who is busy writing a novel. Brian is the catalyst for many of the film's deeper thought-provoking moments. It is also Brian who just might hold the key to the real meaning of the film. Like Cruise, sometimes having Lee in a picture is a turnoff, however in VANILLA SKY he is perfectly cast.

VANILLA SKY isn't the easiest film to understand. It isn't necessarily the most romantic film and though it's an intelligent movie, it asks more questions than it answers. It also has an open ending, so people who have to have a movie end all tidy will have problems with the film's ending. Nevertheless, the film is a beautiful piece of cinema that engages and entertains. A person cannot watch it without and not have something to think about later. That's something only really good movies can do.

3 out of 5 stars Original and compelling.......2007-01-07

Vanilla Sky is an interesting examination of the human psyche. Cruise plays the handsome but arrogant tycoon who gets his face disfigured in a car accident. I think it's an amazing concept to ponder what a drastic blow to the ego this would be. Tom shows a great deal of courage with this role.
I also really enjoyed Cameron Diaz's performance. She's more known for her happy, goofy personality. But here she is the insanely jealous lover. She's attractive, controlling, and vindictive, every guys nightmare.
This movie jumps around and can be confusing the first time watching it. Overall it's a good story, but the individual characters and their interactions are the best part.

4 out of 5 stars Scary Diaz.......2006-08-27

This movie really got me looking at C Diaz in a different light... really scary, creepy.
Makes you see that there are consequences to your actions.
Concept is interesting, not one of Tom's best but very entertaining. Makes you wonder what they may be able to do in the future. Enjoyed the movie, not for kids though.

When the owner of the hapless Minnesota Twins (talk about art imitating life) dies and leaves his grandson (Luke Edwards) the team in his will, the 12-year-old decides to manage the team himself. Aside from the obvious headline value of his move, no one seems to like the idea and the kid finds himself battling for his fledgling managerial career. Eventually, however, he wins the confidence of his favorite player (Timothy Busfield) and before long has the team playing like kids: for the fun of it, rather than the money. (Now there's a concept.) Though billed as a family movie, the saccharine level is high enough to scare off most adults. But kids, particularly baseball fans, will eat it up, as much for the appearances of baseball stars like Ken Griffey Jr. and Paul O'Neill as for the plot itself. --Marshall Fine

I'm sure you folks already know what the movie is about; no need to retell the plot again. Anyway, Little Big League is a really good movie that most families will enjoy. I saw this as a kid and still love it as an adult!

From start to finish, the movie pulls you in. Although it does seem to stumble a little at points, it has an overall great flow. By the time Little Big League is over, you'll be begging for more; it's that great of a movie!!!
