Near-DOA policeman with nice nurse seeks revenge later.
Amazon.com
After making his action-hero debut in 1988's Above the Law, Steven Seagal followed up with this typically formulaic action thriller, in which the ponytailed crime fighter is shot full of bullets and left for dead after he uncovers a powerful circle of corrupt politicians. After seven years in a coma, he returns to consciousness and is nursed back to health by--surprise, surprise!--a gorgeous woman, played by Seagal's then wife Kelly ("don't hate me because I'm beautiful") LeBrock. Once in peak condition, snarlin' Steve sets out to satisfy his hearty appetite for revenge, and the bone-crunching action kicks into high gear with the requisite chases, hand-to-hand combat, and escalating body count. This is one of Seagal's best vehicles, establishing the star's screen persona before it grew stale in later films. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars "Hard to Kill" is hard not to like.......2007-03-15

Just after "Above The Law" and before his girth expanded, Seagal made this dandy little action thriller. Set seven years ago on oscar night( and that is as close as he would ever get to one) Seagal gets bad guy Sadler(always fun as the bad man) on video ordering a hit on someone. Well before you can say "kung fu" Seagal is shot and left for dead , his wife is killed and his son gets away. But as we all know, if you don't cut him into pieces, just like Jason, Seagal isn't dead, but he is REALLY, REALLY MAD. Never once is this believable but as it moves so fast you never really have much time to think about it.

3 out of 5 stars Seagal and LeBrock look great together..........2007-01-02

Seagal plays Mason Storm, a Los Angeles homicide detective who is seen on the dock, one night, with a video camera and a tape recorder, spying on mystery guys who were plotting to turn a political figure into a memory...

Once he gets the evidence, Storm shares the information with a buddy, unaware that two crooked cops, in the next room, are listening in to their phone conversation...

Later that night, an assassination squad turns their automatic weapons against Storm and his family... They murder his wife, fail to kill his young kid, but apparently left him seriously wounded...

After Storm is taken to the hospital, he sank into a deep coma... His death was faked and his true identity was hidden away by a friend..

Seven years later, Seagal suddenly comes out of his coma, and begins to remember events that happened while he was conscious...

When he regains his full consciousness, he asks his beautiful nurse, Kelly LeBrock, to get him immediately out of the hospital...

In a house-sitting far back from the city, Storm prepares his health and wellness with Oriental healing traditions, stimulating the flow of energy within his body, by inserting fine needles into specific points on his skin...

Once achieving his skills of vitality, he set out to avenge his wife's murder by tracking down the crooked cops, and of course the ambitious, cynical politician, who was behind the grand scheme of things...

"Hard to Kill" is full of flying bullets and breaking-glass, with super-graphic fights and shootouts... Our great hero proves once again to have a threatening penchant for breaking bad men's arms, legs, wrists and backs...

Seagal and LeBrock look great together.. Their palpable chemistry is well translated on the screen... The gorgeous model eventually married the wonderful man, and they would have three children... However, in 1996 the two divorced and LeBrock began appearing a bit more, taking part in the feature film 'Wrongfully Accused' (1998), opposite Leslie Nielsen and Richard Crenna...

5 out of 5 stars Hard To Kill........2006-06-16

I love this movie.Rated R for strong martial-arts action,violence,language,and some sexuality.Not for children.

4 out of 5 stars "I'm gonna take you to the bank Senator. To the blood bank.".......2005-10-07

It's hard to hate Hard to Kill, but you will also find it hard to avoid soiling yourself after being subjected to the unintentional humor inherant in any quality Seagal flick, this one no exception. Grasshopper Steven portrays Mason Storm, a man brutally cut down in his home by crooked cops and presumed dead... that is until he shows signs of life in the emergency room and is kept alive in a coma for years. He awakens in the 1990s with the beautiful Kelly LeBrock as his nurse and soon realizes that he is being sought out by the same cops that attempted to murder him years earlier. Seagal manages to recall a shady Senator through a memory lapse and promises to take him to the blood bank. Some other humorous moments include Seagal punching a wood plank out of its ground anchor during his training sessions, Seagal covered with smoking acupuncture needles during therapy, Seagal throwing a tribal mask over the head of a defeated enemy, etc. Another winner.

2 out of 5 stars Story and Action is Lacking .......2005-09-15

This movie starts out well enough. The first fight scene is quick but entertaining. The plot thickens as his family is slain and he is in a coma, unbeknownst of the Bad guys (they think he died also). But while Seagal delivers a strong performance in a poorly directed movie, everything else crumbles. Le Brock, then married to Seagal, is poor as the nurse bringing Seagal back to health so he can clear his name and wallop the bad guys. Bill Sadler is OK as the sinister, power hungry senator, but the movies fight scenes are boring and people are knocked out in unrealistic fashion (a lot of Glass Jaw Joes in this film).

Still, it is not a total disaster, if you have an hour and a half to kill; it beats any Seagal Movie besides Exit Wounds since 1997.

5 out of 5 stars "I do my best thinking in the hot tub.".......2006-04-07

Hey, let's be honest here. Andy Sidaris is not a master filmmaker. But the guy does really care about his films if you listen to the commentary. Sure, there's a lot of unintentional humor and the intentional humor is groaningly not-funny. The stories are silly, the characterizations broad, and the action mostly a bunch of choppy explosion.

But these films are rarely boring. As a diehard Andy Sidaris fan, I love these gems of low-budget cinema. They make me laugh, make me wonder, and just amuse me. It doesn't hurt that Andy has apparently never heard the term "Gratituous Nudity" because there's a lot of it in here.

And that's a good thing.

It's been a long wait till these movies were available again. The box set is a great idea. These are fun movies that also throw in a helping flash of flesh from some very pretty girls. If your looking for some not so serious good guy vrs. bad guy movies, (James Bond they aren't) and your old enough to watch then these are for you. Any of the Andy Sadaris collectors sets are a good choice, and will probably have you coming back for more. Enjoy.

His smash-'n'-bash screen debut! Steven Seagal shows he's an action hero to reckon with in Above the Law. He plays Nico Toscani, a tough-as-nails Chicago cop who, bounced from the force, dares to fight drug-runners and other lowlifes on their own lethal terms. Andrew Davis (The Fugitive) directs. Hard to Kill, the second film of Seagal's career, is hard to beat, a volatile tale of a gunned-down L.A. detective Mason Storm, who awakens from a coma determined to find his would-be killers. As Storm, Seagal unleashes a fury of revenge - and combines cutting down bad guys with cuttingly funny one-liners!

4 out of 5 stars Steven Seagal nostalgia.......2005-12-07

This DVD set contains the first two Steven Seagal movies. The first movie (Above the Law) was a formulaic maverick-cop-vs-powerful-baddies story with somewhat slow pacing, but it introduced the audience to a new kind of action hero (Dirty Harry + Bruce Lee) that turned Seagal from a martial arts instructor into a big-time movie star. Seagal's brutal yet stylish fighting technique is a marvel to watch, although there were only a few fighting sequences in this movie. The second movie (Hard to Kill) was more exciting with wall-to-wall action that more fully utilized Seagal's fighting skills. Here Seagal plays a cop who recovers from a coma to avenge the killing of his family. These two movies were not Seagal's best, but they are good action flicks worth owning for nostalgia. (Seagal's best movies are Under Siege 1 and 2.)

There are two DVDs in this set, one for each movie. Each DVD is two-sided, with one side containing a full-screen version of the movie while the other side containing an anamorphic wide-screen version.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Seagal's first 2.......2007-06-12

ABOVE THE LAW and HARD TO KILL were Steven Seagal's first two movies. After being discovered by a Hollywood director teaching martial arts in California, Seagal wrote and starred the leading role in ABOVE THE LAW. He plays a cop in Chicago who used to be a C.I.A. operative. While making a routine bust he stumbles upon an elaborate, sinister plot that is driven by some old enemies he made while he was a "company" man.

HARD TO KILL details the story of a cop who is thought to have died after being gunned down by a bunch of hoodlums. In reality, he is in a coma for several years. He is lucky enough to have Kelly Lebrock (sigh) as his nurse.

The cop has a secret that he takes with him to his coma. When he comes out of it, he threatens the career and liberty of the politician who sent the hoodlums after him. He invokes acupuncture on his "get well soon" plan as he doesn't have time to be laid up!

Both of these films are quite good. The 3rd Seagal feature, MARKED FOR DEATH was a good action flick as well. After that, his movies were hit & miss (his most big-budget & best movie being UNDER SIEGE). Sadly, he mostly makes just "B" movies these days. In any case, these two films launched a successful career of one of the bigger action stars of the past 30 years.

With a reported budget of $172 million, Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines starts in high gear and never slows down. The apocalyptic "Judgment Day" of T2 was never prevented, only postponed: John Connor (Nick Stahl, replacing T2's Edward Furlong), now 22 and disconnected from society, is being pursued yet again, this time by the advanced T-X, a sleek "Terminatrix" (coldly expressionless Kristanna Loken) programmed to stop Connor from becoming the savior of humankind. Originally programmed as an assassin, a disadvantaged T-101 cyborg (Arnold Schwarzenegger, bidding fond farewell to his signature role) arrives from the future to join Connor and his old acquaintance Kate (Claire Danes) in thwarting the T-X's relentless pursuit. The plot presents a logical fulfillment of T2 prophesy, disposing of Connor's mother (Linda Hamilton is sorely missed) while computer-driven machines assume control, launching a nuclear nightmare that Connor must survive. With Breakdown and U-571 serving as worthy rehearsals for this cautionary epic of mass destruction, director Jonathan Mostow wisely avoids any stylistic connection to James Cameron's Terminator classics; instead he's crafted a fun, exciting popcorn thriller, humorous and yet still effectively nihilistic, and comparable to Jurassic Park III in returning the Terminator franchise to its potent B-movie roots. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Did somebody say best movies ever?.......2004-05-11

Yes, these are the greatest movies ever. Even better than "Sniper 2". Steven Seagal is out for revenge and it is wonderful. Once again he brings a lot of energy to the screen with his whispering and shooting. He always fights for a the little man. In "On Deadly Ground" he fights for the native Indians of Alaska and goes on an exciting spiritual journey. "Under Siege" obviously was unjustly refused nomination for Academy Awards. This is a must own for all movie fans. Trust me, you won't be disappointed.

          4 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2002-12-08

These are his best movies before he got stuipd.

2 out of 5 stars He's got to be kidding.......2002-12-06

Guess he needs the money. He's sort of the male version of Ana Nicole Smith, much more attention than his actions and decisions have deserved. Fact is though, some of his movies have been pretty good. If your a Segal fan I pity you, but you'd probably enjoy these. If you are Steven Segal - work with people making successful films, stop trying to push your own agenda!
