Sweetness that doesn't turn saccharine is hard to find these days; Finding Neverland hits the mark. Much credit is due to the actors: Johnny Depp applies his genius for sly whimsy in his portrayal of playwright J. M. Barrie, who finds inspiration for his greatest creation from four lively boys, the sons of widow Sylvia Llewelyn Davies (Kate Winslet, who miraculously fuses romantic yearning with common sense). Though the friendship threatens his already dwindling marriage, Barrie spends endless hours with the boys, pretending to be pirates or Indians--and gradually the elements of Peter Pan take shape in his mind. The relationship between Barrie and the Llewelyn Davies family sparks both an imagined world and a quiet rebellion against the stuffy forces of respectability, given physical form by Barrie's resentful wife (Radha Mitchell, High Art) and Sylvia's mother (Julie Christie, McCabe and Mrs. Miller). This gentle silliness could have turned to treacle, but Depp and Winslet--along with newcomer Freddie Highmore as one of the boys--keep their feet on the earth while their eyes gaze into their dreams. Also featuring a comically crusty turn from Dustin Hoffman (who appeared in another Peter Pan-themed movie, Hook) as a long-suffering theater producer. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A great movie.......2007-06-28

This movie really touched my heart. It's based on the man who wrote Peter Pan, and in my opinion his story is more remarkable than the play he wrote. A man who struggled to write a hit play, struggled to find happiness within his marriage, and struggled to find himself. He finds a young boy named Peter who's mom is played be Kate Winslett. He becomes involved with this young boys family and his whole life changes. This is a touching story, and dare I say will bring a tear to your eye. My wife and I thouroughly enjoyed this movie. I hope you do as well.

5 out of 5 stars Finding Neverland Review.......2007-06-27

A true story about the individual who developed Peter Pan. Sad in some respects but still a film worthy of viewing. It is an enjoyable view and I recommend it to true story lovers.

5 out of 5 stars Charming and delightful, wonderful entertainment for the whole family..........2007-06-21

This biopic tailor made for the family is a nice way to spend an evening at home. It's sweet, dramatic, traumatic and overall delightfully charming. It has almost every element you'd want in family entertainment. It has a wonderful script and a stellar cast and the set designs were wonderfully crafted, able to cast a sense of mystery and fantasy while still carrying a touch of reality. I myself have always been a fan on the biopic, and when that said biopic is done brilliantly, well then I can be found close to tears. Let's just say that `Finding Neverland' is on the verge of heavenly in my boat.

Following J.M. Barrie as he struggles to pick himself up from his last stage disaster, Depp does a wonderful job investing charm and humor in his character while still layering him with an apparent sadness. He's fallen out of touch with his wife, played by the tragically underused Radha Mitchell. His last few plays have been flops, and while he parades himself as the optimist on the outside Depp subtly allows us to see this man crumbling inside. When Depp was first nominated for the Oscar I didn't quite get it, but after several viewings of this film I now understand. His performance was understated and subtle, and in those subtleties he was able to breathe reality into J.M. Barrie.

Just when writers block seems to have taken its hold of Barrie he runs into a young widow Sylvia, played by the iconic Kate Winslet, and her four young boys. Barrie soon takes an attachment to the boys, and they to him, and it's in their fire that he finds inspiration for the play that made him a household name, Peter Pan. Winslet's performance is probably the most difficult of the cast, and she pulls it off with flying colors. She's able to evoke every emotion out of the audience without ever appearing overly needy or displaying a shred of self-pity. Her character has only her children in mind even as she falls apart on the inside. Like in Depps case, it's the subtlety in the performance that makes the character all the more real.

Another highlight to the film is newcomer Freddie Highmore who plays Sylvia's more emotionally troubled son Peter. His mature performance perfectly compliments those of the adult cast, and his tears in a few key scenes will mirror yours as you become emotionally invested in this young boy.

The film beautifully captures the spirit of adolescence and shows the importance for children to have a father and for men to have children. Even though Barrie was not a father himself, much less the father of the four boys that inspired him, the five of them needed each other and grew together because of it. It's a wonderful family film complete with a stellar supporting cast as well including Dustin Hoffman and Julie Christie. There are few films that both parents and children can enjoy, so when gems like this film arrive we do well to swoop in and devour them.

2 out of 5 stars Didactic. Bad Film........2007-03-11

I don't think anything about this film really gets going. I don't blame Winslet or Depp but I blame the director. The direction was like a poor salesman's incongruent speech before sale. It just didn't do anything for me. I wasn't touched. Not impressed. I don't even remember scenes. One of the most forgettable films I've seen.

5 out of 5 stars 2 of the best actors of our day.......2007-03-09

Kate Winslet and Johnny Depp are the perfect acting one-two punch. If you have not seen this movie, see it!

Unlike Disney's other sequels to their classic films, this follow-up to the 1953 version of Peter Pan debuted in theaters. World War II has turned Wendy's preteen daughter, Jane, into a realist, a girl who insists there's no need for stories and fun while London is crumbling. Hook kidnaps Jane (thinking she's Wendy) and returns to "the second star to the right" to foil Pan. Alas, the film doesn't build on this new story line (the London scenes have the most emotional impact), and what follows is a thin reworking of the original. On the plus side, a clever octopus takes over from that old crocodile, and Jane turns out to be a solid--and modern--role model. Those from ages 4 to 9 who have been brought up on the original should enjoy these adventures, even if the story, like Peter himself, "hasn't grown up." The 72-minute film is shown with the delightful 1948 short "Pluto's Fledgling." --Doug Thomas

1 out of 5 stars Junk.......2007-05-26

At a younger age, I thought this was junk. Now that I'm older, I find that I was being foolish. This is beyond junk, its on the verge of being untouchable waste. As far as Disney sequels go, this one ranks with Cinderella 2 and Air Buddies. I wouldn't even recommend showing this to a baby that has no ability to understand bad movies from good movies, because this will teach them to enjoy nothing of value.

3 out of 5 stars a short review........2007-03-25

First, this movie is overrated and doesn't come close to the Disney original. Disney once stood for quality and entertainment. Now they will exploit any of their classics with a plethora of bad sequels.

I'm not just a hater of new Disney, I own and have seen this movie. Some of it is actually not too bad. Captain hook is funny and the animation is top notch. However, Peter Pan doesn't seem like the same Peter. He seems more immature and annoying. Also, why did they need to have the same dog and call it Nanna 2? This just goes to show how little thought was put into the movie. Out of all the names for the dog, they choose Nana 2.... my god!

5 out of 5 stars Captain Hook Junkie.......2007-01-06

If your kids love Captian Hook or pirates this is the DVD for them. My son loves pirates so he always likes to watch this one.

3 out of 5 stars Return to Neverland? More Like Return to Disney Sequels... .......2006-02-09

You may have read my review for the Disney film "Peter Pan". I said it was a good movie, right? Well, this one did not live up to it's 1953 prequel. It was boring and dramatic and just another cheap Disney sequel.
It starts out completely wrong. Jane, Wendy's daughter, did not exist during World War II but in the late nineteenth century. She was never against Peter Pan and she did not have a brother. She was just a little girl who dreamed of going to Neverland when her mother stopped believing. Also, Captain Hook SHOULD BE DEAD but he comes to England in his flying ship (?) to kidnap who he believes is Wendy.
Once Jane arrives at Neverland she meets Peter Pan. I was really shocked here. What happened to Peter's voice? It is TERRIBLE in the fact that it sounds far too adolescent.
After this meeting, several adventures ensue, including Jane's attempt to escape the island that she still does not believe in. She can't learn to fly and in a rage she blurts out she doesn't believe in fairies, so Tink becomes weak. Jane repents and saves her and becomes friends with all the Lost Boys, eventually fulfilling her dream to become the first Lost Girl. But she has forgotten she made a deal with Captain Hook to help kidnap Peter. Now it is up to Jane to save him, and she does, therefore removing Peter from his post as hero and becoming heroine.
There were a few strange parts about this movie. The Indians are never shown, even though there is a brief pass through the Indian Territory. There is scarcely a visit to Mermaid's Lagoon. And once again, Tootles has no voice. The best part in this movie is the end credits with BBMak's version of "Do You Believe in Magic?". This movie earned three stars, and only because it is tied-in with Peter Pan.

P.S. Check out the other Peter Pan-related reviews by Tinkerbell III!

4 out of 5 stars Um.......I Don't know.......2005-11-27

I like this movie and I don't like this movie. Like my dad I LOVE PETER PAN. I've read the book a million times over, and I was really excited when I saw the previews for this movie. My family saw it in the theaters and I really liked it at first. But after seeing a few times more then it got a little cheesy. The music doesn't really fit the movie and Peter acted more like a kid than ever( even though he's not suppose to grow up they could have made him have more brains than that). This movie is good but it has some parts that are embarressly kiddish. Out of the three squels I think disney did a good job on this one would be second place.

5 out of 5 stars The Magic in Imagination.......2007-03-25

This movie had me on a journey from beginning to end. It is one of those rare special moves that is able to touch on many emotions. Watching this made me understand the true meaning of imagination and not letting go of your innocent wonder.

The movie is loosely based on the life of the man who wrote the play Peter Pan. The story helps you understand the purity in this mans heart to open peoples mind to imagination. From beginning to end I was in another world and it seemed nothing bad could happen. It is really a visual journey that is pleasantly set in England at the turn of the 20th century. Kate Winslett and Johnny Depp do a superb job in there roles as they show why they are two of the best actors of this current generation. Except this story has wonderful acting all over. From the children to the adults who acted as children. It really is a special tale for all those to see. I really can't think of anything bad to say about this movie. For it woke up my creative spirit and opened my eyes to the fantastic Neverland that is in all our hearts.

I was lucky enough to view this on Blu-ray and I must say it looks fabulous. This movie was made for high definition and it really comes out that way. The sound is also uncompressed allowing anyone with surround sound to enjoy it the way it should be. I would advise anyone who has children or is open to imagining to watch this wonderful and superb gem.

4 out of 5 stars One Man's Passion Touches those Who Believe .......2007-02-02

You find hope, passion and a reason for being in the strangest places. I was very touched by this film. It is much deeper and touching than I imagined it would be. Several of the images still remain with me touching me somewhere deep inside and from times long ago. Johnny Depp continues to show signs of brilliance as an actor. You feel his passion as well as his pain in his performance. He so effortlessly touches all those who believe in his dreams. Kate Winslet, Dustin Hoffman and ultimately Julie Christie succumb to his belief that dreams can come true.

3 out of 5 stars The Peter Pan Story Reset for Older Escapists.......2005-05-11

"Neverland" is the Peter Pan story reset to slacker characters. The three adopted Darling children, John (a 23-year old dropout, played by Wil Wheaton), Michael (a similar-aged Ritalin taker, played by Marcus Reynaga), and Wendy (the designated responsible babysitter, played by Melany Bell) all want to escape their home. Peter Pan (Rick Sparks) shows up looking for the keys to his car ("My Shadow") and entices Wendy and her adoptive brothers to run away to Neverland, an amusement park maintained by head janitor Hook (Gary Kelley). Tinkerbell (Kari Wahlgren) takes an instant dislike of Wendy. We meet the Lost Boys, a drag queen Tiger Lily (Ray Garcia), American Indian performers, and other varients of the Barrie story. Hook says he wants to rid Neverland of Lost Boy lowlives but indicates he uses the boys for his own purposes. The story proceeds.

Skin shots are provided by Michael, Hook, and two of the Lost Boys. There is no sex or violence. For all of its edgy look, the basic story is very evident throughout.

The acting was fair. For whatever reason I liked Rick Sparks as Peter, Melany Bell as Wendy, and Ryan Patrick Kelly as Tootles, a Lost Boy. The lighting and sets were interesting.

The drawbacks for me were the mixed messages in the film.

Wendy's moralizing and second thoughts come almost as soon as she reaches Neverland; there is no honeymoon period. Characters in their mid-20s are lectured to both get a career and live at home with their parents. Disney's Peter Pan and Pinocchio deliver similar, simpler messages. Here, Ikiru meets The Wizard of Oz.

The film has been marketed to an extent as a gay film because of the Hook's stated tendencies and S&M costuming. But for me the film's implicit message is that if you leave the safety of home, you will be attacked by perverts. Although Peter claims to be "pansexual", there are no positive gay characters in the film. Pan dispatches Hook, and nobody cares. This is not a gay film.

It is an interesting variant of the Peter Pan story and has more point for older viewers wondering if they have been enticed to their own Neverlands.

5 out of 5 stars The most beautiful cast I've ever seen........2005-04-20

This movie has the most beautiful ensemble cast I've ever seen. There is something for everyone here. This is an intellectual spin on a classic fairy tale, but it is extremely sensual as well. A MUST for any indie film collector or those who are fans of explicitly gay-themed movies.

2 out of 5 stars A might-have-been.......2004-12-29

It's a brilliant conception, but spoiled by dreadful acting (the actors all appear to be on permanent automatic pilot - or something) - and inept direction and camera work. I enjoyed it up to a point, but I was constantly thinking "this could have been so much better".

5 out of 5 stars Great Film.......2004-12-28

Saw it in a film festival. Loved it had to have the DVD. The lead (Rick Sparks)is excellent and Dietz is an up and coming director.

5 out of 5 stars The best version of Peter Pan EVER!.......2004-11-17

This movie is by far the best version of Peter Pan that has ever been made. The story has been told over and over again but never with this originality or style. This movie was sick. I rented this movie to watch with my girlfriend and her little brother but we had to send the little brother out of the room to play with his Playstation. Making Tinkerbell a Gwen Stefani/hoochie/fairy dust dealer was genius and the Tiger Lily song was unbelievable. We were on the floor amazed by this movie. We still quote it.
