A camp classic and one-time staple of late-night cable, Gymkata stars former Olympic gymnast Kurt Thomas as a master of Gymkata, a fighting style that blends elements of martial arts and--what else?--gymnastics. Sent to a fictional Middle Eastern country on the Caspian Sea called "Karabal, on the Caspian Sea," Jonathan Cabot (Thomas) must survive a high-stakes competition called the Game that had previously claimed the life of his father. But winning could mean shifting the balance of power in the cold war. (The movie was made in 1985, and Thomas missed out on the 1980 Olympics because of the U.S. boycott.) Fortunately, being a master of Gymkata means that as you run through the village streets with bad guys in hot pursuit, in between the buildings you'll find a conveniently placed high bar from which you can swing and unleash powerful villain-crunching kicks. Moments like that earn Gymkata a 9.5 on the unintentional-comedy scale. With Tetchie Agbayani as the love-interest princess, and Buck Kartalian as a fearsome villain who looks like Mel Brooks. --David Horiuchi

Description

Johnathan Cabot (Kurt Thomas) is a champion gymnast. In the tiny, yet savage, country of Parmistan, there is a perfect spot for a "star wars" site. For the US to get this site, they must compete in the brutal "Game". The government calls on Cabot, the son of a former operative, to win the game. Cabot combines his skill at western gymnastics with his fighting secrets of the east and forms Gymkata.

This has to be one of the worst movies ever. In fact it is so bad that I love it. The acting is terrible, along with the story line.

A must own.

a dvd that was long overdue a mix of martial arts
and gymnastics far as i know there is no other movie
like it which is a shame imagine if there was a more
up to date version. anyways remember it is an old 80's
movie.it has a good story line and i would recomend it

5 out of 5 stars this movie rules.......2007-03-09

i remember watching this movie as a young lad on HBO quite a bit. As i grew older, i forgot about it. then, one day, i saw they were releasing it on DVD and i knew i had to have it. My friend and I fondly remember this movie for one reason: the pumel horse in the middle of the town of crazies! When my copy of this fine film arrived at my house, i immediately watched it. it is still a fun, campy film to this day. If you haven't seen Gymkata, i think you should check it out. fun all around.

5 out of 5 stars Gymkate - Cinéma vérité.......2007-02-24

I know there have been a ton of gymnastics/karate movies made in the last 25 years, but the buck stops here. Gymkata is the reason Edison created the motion picture camera. The director Robert Clouse has created Profound storytelling on an epic scope.

From the opening credits Jonathan is whisked away to an enchanted land of evil, danger and incredible beauty. imitation is the highest form of flattery, too true. Mel Gibson recently tried to recreate the action, excitement, and drama of Gymkata's "Game of Death" with his own film Apacolypto. Nice try Mel. The Game Of Death concept featured in Gymkata, is by far the best example of mans effort to out run the demons of his life, whether they be external, or internal. not even the glorious countryside locations of passolini's Gospel According to ST. Mathew can compare to the portrayl of one of the worlds most diverse, bountaful, and gorgeous country-lands Parmastan. A first class trip to Parmastan? yes please

Some say that Francis Ford Copala's Appocolypse Now is the ultimate film example of mans quest in to the darkest regions of the human soul. For my money, its Gymkatas twisted journey into "the village of the damned" with its oh so realistic action, and stunning use of slow motion The village of the Damned is one of the most breath taking, horrofying, astonishing sequences in film history. How Jonathan makes it out with his mind, body, and soul intact is beyond me.

Bogart and Becall, Astaire and Rogers, Pitt and Jolie, what do these on screen couple have in common? they are ice cold next to the red hot on screen romance of Jonathan, and Princess Rubali. love at first sight is an understatement, when these to fated lovers first meet eyes the silver screen is leteraly set on fire with the pure energy of untamed attraction.

There is too much Raw Cinema Power involved in Gymkata to squeez into a single foulable review. You will just have to trust me. However, I will leave you with this last thought: I bet when you visited Amazon.com today you had no idea you would find a DVD that was guarateed to change your life.

I remember watching this movie when it came out when I was like 12 years old or something. After watching we would go out and play ninja fighting the enemy ninja trees!! The ninja pine tree was a personal favorite. Watching this movie brings back all those memories, its so good, with a little cheese built in. The fight scenes are great. Kane is cool.I highly recommend this one.

5 out of 5 stars Watch this movie or die trying........2007-05-25

Um, Revenge of the Ninja isn't as good as it used to be. When I was younger, I loved it - but this was around the same time I was wearing Bugle Boy parachute pants. What I didn't realize when I was younger though, was that there was so much unintentional comedy in this movie. First - the Italian mob boss. His introduction to the viewers occurs when he's in a room with a buncha G's, lying on the table with his shirt off and getting a massage ---- by another gangster! Then he sits up and his man-bewbs are front and center. Gross.

The fight scenes are what this movie is about though, and believe it or not, they're not very realistic. That doesn't mean they aren't funny though. In fact, I saw something in this movie I can't even believe: in one scene the Italian mob boss dispatches his Native American Indian bodyguard to go and scalp the ninja. Read that last sentence again. A mafia boss has an Indian bodyguard (Indian headband, ponytails, hatchets, all of it) working for him, and wants him to scalp a ninja. Uh, my money's on the ninja.

In another scene, the ninja and his cop buddy go to ask some paroled felons some questions - except the felons are hanging out in a playground and they look like a poor man's version of the Village People. There's a Mexican biker, a blue collar worker with a mustache, a big fat guy with a Mohawk, and black dude on roller skates (I'm serious.) A fight ensues, and ends with the black dude on roller skates shooting his pistol at the ninja (in a playground), at which point the ninja produces a throwing star from his belt buckle and throws it at the black dude on roller skates' wrist. His wrist is then stuck to the wooden beam of a swing-set. Oh, and then they walk away - and the crowd parts for them. No sirens though. Shots fired at a cop and a ninja in a playground, and then they just walk away, through a crowd that just watched a ninja brawl at a playground. Awesome.

Don't even get me started on the little kid fighting with the girl though. The little kid is like four years old, but this chick actually gets in a karate fight with him... He's four years old! Just pick him up and drop him. I'm not trying to brag, but I think if I had to, I could beat-up any four year old put in front of me. Oh, I just remembered this though! -- the fight scene in the beginning -- with the little kid and the neighborhood bullies on their Huffy's -- is reason enough to get this movie. It's priceless. The final fight scene is tedious and gets bizarre, but the way the dude squirts blood like 50 feet when he get stabbed in the belly is awesome. Truly the cherry on top of a sundae. A ninja sundae. Watch this movie or die trying.

4 out of 5 stars Great Memories!!.......2007-05-22

This is clearly the best film of the genre, and nobody was better than Sho Kosugi!! The story is typical but solid, and the acting is not oscar worthy, but it works with the film. Great to see it on DVD, too. I hadn't seen it in almost 20 years until recently, and it gave me chills watching it again!

5 out of 5 stars The spirit of the Ninja lives!.......2007-05-09

This movie is a ninja classic and an excellent revenge movie. Sho Kosugi is obviously a very accomplished martial artist and the fight scenes are well choreographed.

The hand to hand combat, however, does not look like ninjitsu. I believe Kosugi san is demonstrating his skill in karate but it is unfortunate he could not have demonstrated more actual, ninjitsu techniques. He is much better at demonstrating ninjitsu with the various weapons.

However, the best feature of this film is that it portrays the budo spirit very well and Sho is believable as a ninja. As much of knowledge of actual ninjas has been lost, we are left guessing at what they actually were like as fighters and people but something in Sho's portrayal rings true.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone interested in martial arts.

5 out of 5 stars Ninja 80's style.......2007-03-30

To bad you can only give 5 stars. This is an awesome Movie. Some of the scenes are excellent. Some sad parts and some good parts. Some shocking parts. I mean like some really wow parts. One guy is fighting ninjas under ground and gets stabbed from underneath. I mean like wow he steps on his own intestine! You have got to get this movie. If you don't have it GET IT! An amazing Movie. One of the best Shaw releases.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite Martial Art Movie.......2006-06-13

This is an awesome movie. The fight scences are some of the best aever made, the costumes are great, and the use of weapons are really good. The basis of the movie is that the school of good guys (who wear white) has a tournement against the bad school (wears back) for control of the martial arts world. But when the bad guys lose, their hired killer throws the master of the good school his ring (which is poisonous) and tells him when he sees another ring like that that it will be his friend/master challenging him. So the master has his school practice and set up a defense system around their school. A few months down the line, they get a challenge from the killer's friend (the ninja school) to go against their 5 elements. So not knowing what they are up against, the good master sends most of his best warriors to see what the 5 elements are. And that's when all the action starts. Each element uses a unique style of fighting that will leave you awed. This movie is a great tale of revenge and regret. I think you'll really like it.

Christopher Lambert, the imposing French actor with the nasal whine best known to American audiences as Scottish swordsman Highlander, plays a rank amateur in The Hunted. He's an American businessman in Japan who lucks into a one-night stand with slinky Joan Chen and winds up a witness to her murder by a mysterious band of black-clad ninjas. Escaping not one but two attempts on his life by a little quick thinking and a lot of dumb luck, he winds up on a harrowing bullet train ride. As swarms of masked assassins decimate passengers in search of the elusive eyewitness, Lambert's laconic protector, rough-edged samurai Yoshio Harada, unleashes a martial arts frenzy of flashing swords in close quarters. His savior is not as altruistic as he seems, however. He just wants to lure mysterious ninja overlord John Lone out of hiding and into a fight to the death on Harada's island fortress, and Lambert is little more than live bait. Though it made few ripples at the box office, The Hunted is a slick and surprisingly smart thriller. Lone and Harada cut striking figures as the warriors following ancient codes in the modern world, and writer-director J.F. Lawton (screenwriter of Pretty Woman and Under Siege) gives them almost as much screen time as ostensible hero Lambert. The action scenes are furious and fast paced, lacking the grace and precision of real Japanese samurai adventures but full of clever flourishes. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars A "lost" film.......2007-01-27

The Hunted was the type of movie that briefly appeared in theaters and then quickly vanished. I didn't get to see it until it aired on HBO. This was a film that I regret not seeing on the big screen. After it aired on cable for a short time, it vanished again. Why do such great films often get "lost"? This film is a must-see for fans of the genre or fans of Christopher Lambert.

5 out of 5 stars Manhunt in Tokyo: Bloody sword-play!.......2007-01-27

After a night with a mysterious lady, New York businessman, Mr. Racine, found himself in the middle of a Tokyo under-world assassination. The assassin: none other than the fanatical Kinjo, leader of a radical cult of Ninja assassins. The trouble began when Mr. Racine saw Kinjo's face, and Kinjo's henchmen failed to kill Mr. Racine.
The hunt is on! Racine finds he is now the target of the assassin cult, but uses his wits to evade them until he is taken in by a modern Samurai, Takeda, who is equally fanatical about hunting Kinjo to settle a multi-generational feud. Takeda cares nothing about Racine, he is merely useful as a means to identify Kinjo. The chase through Tokyo climaxes in a savage and bloody assault on the Shinkansen commuter train, where Takeda and his wife dispatch the murderous cult-members in classic Samurai style!
Temporarily safe in Takeda's fortress, Racine befriends the clan swordsmith, Oshima, (played by a real-life famous Karate instructor, Tak Kubota) a clownish, heavy-drinking, but highly-skilled craftsman of weapons.
The final battle ensues, when Kinjo launches an all-out assault on Takeda's island fortress...and the the vendetta is settled by a duel.

Ignore the negative reviews. Its just an action-movie! Although it follows many common themes in a martial-arts film, this one is slightly different from the norm. Of course, real Ninjutsu and Bujutsu is far more interesting and complex than the stereotypes seen in most movies of this category. But again, its just an action-movie! I believe this is Christopher Lambert's best film since The Highlander!

4 out of 5 stars Not Great, But A Very Decent Film: Entertaining!.......2006-10-19

Now, I can understand some reviewers not liking this film. But this happens to be one of those guilty pleasures that I enjoyed immensely. Is it a classic samurai/ninja film? No. However, I found the cinematography to be outstanding, and although the plot is a little far-fetched, it was refreshingly fun. In fact, the entire film was fun. I like samurai films, and especially films from the far east [mainly Japan] And while I can understand purists looking for perfection to be disappointed, if you just sit back and enjoy the film, you will find it much better than many reviewers have stated. They are entitled to their opinion, and I respect that. Some have made very good and vaild points, and since I never give out negative marks on others, I understand and respect their complaints.

However, for me the film was an enjoyable film. I am not a fan of Christopher Lambert [This is the only one of his I own]. But, his portrayal was pretty good [not great]. The strong points of the film for me dealt with the antagonist portrayed by John Lone [head of the Ninja clan] and his nemesis Yoshio Harada [a somewhat protagonist: who also portrayed the sensei in the first Azumi film] When Lambert, and American businessman, witnesses the killing of a woman (Joan Chen) by John Lone, he barely survives the attack himself. Since he is the only one to ever see the face of this Ninja, they seek him out in order to kill him. What ensues is the clan of Harada tries to protect him. Or does Harada use him? There is a great scene of a ninja attack on a bullet train. The film is well worth the watch. Rent it first if you are not sure, I own it, and I am pleasantly happy with the film. Don't take it too seriously, it is a fun watch.

2 out of 5 stars Ninja Flick from the Writer of 'Pretty Woman' (I'm Not Kidding): Poor Actions And Laughable Story .......2006-07-23

Not to be confused with `The Hunted' (2003) directed by William Friedkin.

`The Hunted' (1995) stars French actor Christopher Lambert as Paul Racine, American businessman on trip to modern-day Nagoya, third-largest city of Japan, who happens to witness the killing of a woman by black-masked ninjas. The cult ninja group is actually led by a charismatic leader, Japanese named `Kinjo' who is played by a Chinese actor John Lone, and they begin to search Paul to kill. At the end of the film Paul, an ordinary businessman, proves to be an equal match when fighting against martial arts master Kinjo with a Japanese sword. If you can believe this ridiculous story, you can believe anything.

I can happily ignore all the cultural inaccuracy in films as long as they give me something entertaining, but unfortunately it was not the case with `The Hunted,' of which story slowly follows a beaten path of the genre to the unexciting climax. Moreover, to handle a Japanese sword you need certain kind of gracefulness, which Tom Cruise in `The Last Samurai' managed to acquire after many months' hard training. Lambert et al. show no such thing. He and other ninjas just use them fast and furious, but with no grace and consequently, impact at all. Instead the film substituted the grace of Japanese sword fighting for needless bloody violence, and its pinnacle is the pointless terrorism of the ninjas in the bullet train. This is an insult to Japanese culture, for a ninja could be a spy or an assassin, but he is never a terrorist who would kill innocent passengers.

But the most damaging is the way how the film treats women, who are there to be used for sex scenes. Watching Joan Chen in a Japanese bathtub with Christopher Lambert was something I never expected to see, and it surely represents the attitudes of some (if not all) Hollywood films towards women. And it is not surprising to see the film's director is J. F. Lawton, whose biggest hit is Julia Roberts' `Pretty Woman' (as a writer).

By some distributors (who must have been shocked to know the film's awful content after buying the right) really released this Universal film theatrically in Japan. Since then it has been a cult film for avid Japanese film fans, who take this film as sort of comedy. Really. In addition to the ridiculous casting and the laughable scene where Chris and Joan make love in Japanese bathtub that looks as if made 200 years ago, it has plenty of things that make us laugh - a sweet little girl in pachinko parlor, a kind of gambling place (What is she doing there?); a flight attendant-like female assassin in the bullet train (Come on, it's a train, not an airplane!), and the banging Japanese taiko (drum) concert in the garden of a Nagoya hotel (You just cannot sleep!). Even though this is an action flick, it needs some degree of plausibility, which it totally disregards. And there are poorly done actions, which is another reason that makes me regard `The Hunted' as the Universal Pictures have temporarily stepped into the Ed Wood's Grade-Z territory.

2 out of 5 stars Ok....but ............2006-02-15

I agree with R. Eastwood on mostly of what he says.

Despite that, I have to say that I enjoyed it, since this is one of the few western movies in the genre. Or at least with some decency.

It's a strange movie. It seems that it was written in a hurry, without a real plot purpose. What did it conveyed?

Mr. Lambert really shows his lack of minimun skills in martial arts (And I thought I had seen the worst with David Carradine!)

It's a movie without a main character. It is not Kijo, not Takeda, not even Racine.

I was expecting Takeda to be the real deal, the guy with knowledge and values, but in the end was the real bastard, even more than Kijo.

If we talk about performances, ufff.. Lambert doesn't make it at all, not even the guy who plays Takeda. Whoever, Kijo was excellent !

They introduce this swordsmith character, which is completely out of line. He's a drunkard, at the same time a teaser and an swordsman, who actually teaches Racine a few ninja moves (he knows some ninja style but he's the swordsmith of a samurai???....). The end is a very sad moment because all of these guys in the island die, even Takeda, and Kijo, BUT.....the drunkard comes in a samurai gear, ready for action, and Racine, as nothing had happened, give him a stupid/funny comment.....What was that??????????

On the positive side ....I have to say that the swords choreography wasn't that bad, the kendo fight was alright, and this guy John Long (Kijo) seems to have real knowledge of swordsmanship.

As a conscientious student of Kendo and Iaido, my real delight was the master piece The Last Samurai. One of my top three movies. From every angle, the movie really made it. The performances, the casting, the fight scenes, the narratives, dialogues, photograpies, costumes, the story, the depth of the characters .... so perfect and beautiful I can't believe it. A real gift for us practioners of the japanese sword.

3 out of 5 stars Make sure you DO NOT get the world media verison. .......2006-07-02

Now the film itself as far as I could tell was a good story that was all fantasy but real emotions. I really liked it but canot say that I appreciate the version that i recieved from a seller on amazon:(

The world media version is cut by at least 15 minutes and most of this musta been action cause I didn't see shlt. I heard the movie was bloody, nop, didn't get that. Which proves, you need to see the full 119 minute version of this. Also kungfucinema saisd the pictrue quality was great, world media version SUCKS!!!!!!!!!

So please people, DO NTO BUY THE WORLD MEDIA VERSION OF THIS. I am sure it is a good film, but thought it was average after one viewing and may watch it again but I was irate upon finding out I got a cut version and will for sure sell this at the local used store the first chance i get.

5 out of 5 stars Best Special Effects Ive Seen In A While.......2006-02-06

5 out of 5 stars Great Film & Story.......2005-06-03

I dont know why some people have low comment on this film. maybe bcoz they have watch Men In Black before this film. Well i tell you what, its way to different.
But i would say that the story, casting & effects we're great (but not the fighting scenes and martial arts), but still this film for me deserves a 5 star rating for its exceptional story and the kung-fu flicts.

Awwww!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2005-01-12

I grew up watching martial arts movies and always wanted to see one that has more depth and meaning. This movie does not follow the sterotypical path of most chinese martial arts films. The actors communicate on many different levels that one would not expect. I was very pleased and inspired by this movie. This will be on the top of my favorites list for many decades.

5 out of 5 stars GHOSTFACE KILLER WONG CHEUNG SUAN.......2006-08-10

this movie stars the kung fu brother duo of jack & mark long, their great friend li yi min, the legendary simon yuen, jeannie chiang (a protege of jospeh kuo who really cant fight unless trained), the great wong brothers wong wing san & wong chi sang and ricky chi tien chee all 3 of them serving as fight choreographers. the story starts as the ghostface killer (mark long) killing off honorable elderly men but yet it is hard for him to search for the chess king (jack long). he kills one man in particular who happens to be a young man's father that young man being li yi min who swears revenge and in order to seek revenge he has to seek out a master. so he eventually finds one in a old kung fu cook old yuen (simon yuen) but he later learns all he can learn from old yuen and then seeks out the the chess king and later old yuen is killed by the ghostface killer which we dont see. the highlights of the film is the the flexibilty and magnificent kicking of mark long doing roundhouses and the splits so effortlessly. hands down he must be the greatest kicker from taiwan tying between him, alexander lo rei and chia kai, and he might be one of the best kickers of the genre. the acrobatics by jack long, li yi min and ricky chi tien chee are off the meatrack son. but there are 2 flaws the choppy editing and the switched scene near the end. this movie ran for 2 years just like 7 grandmasters another jospeh kuo gem. the fight scenes are mark long vs. li yi min's father, mark long vs. wong wing san as the pole fighter (one of the best fight scenes youll ever see), mark long vs. the martial arts teacher, and of course final fight between the long brothers then li yi min jumps in. overall this a top 20 if not top 10 pick it up you wont be disappointed.

2 out of 5 stars Don't believe the hype.......2006-06-15

I bought this DVD based on the reviews I read here but after watching the movie I was very disappointed.

one of the things I didn't like was how the main villain would roll around and strike poses before and during battle (the guy would actually role around in the dirt just to strike a pose, then get back up and strike another pose). in a lot of the fight scenes the moves just seemed impractical and silly to be honest. the acting and kung fu performed by the main character and his rival classmate was just plain terrible and the plot was nothing new. just wasn't very interesting imo.

I wouldn't recommend this movie and doubt I'll ever watch it again. that's just my opinion though, seems a lot of others enjoyed it.

5 out of 5 stars Great...but............2006-05-23

This is yet another "classic" martial arts film with "old school" fight choreography and lots of gymnastics, acrobatics, and training sequences. There are some wire tricks but not of the "Crouching Tiger" kind. The fights are many and practically non-stop. The training sequences are fun to look at. However, the video and audio quality are sub-par. It would have been great if the quality was on the level of the "7 Grand Masters". Also, it is available only in full-screen so some of the action seems to fly off the screen. What a travesty. For now, this will have to do until someone gives it the remastering it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars old "skool" kung fu for real.......2006-05-12

I rushed out to get this flick based on the hype!! I was truly impressed with this one. It was entertaining from the start to the finished,,great story line,,,and the many fight scenes, there are absolutely no boaring parts. If you walked away at anytime, more than likely you may have miss something sweet!!!! I now have two new martial arts hero to my collection, Jack and Mark Long,,simply amazing!!! I said it before, and will say it again,,,3 words for this flick "TOUGH, TOUGH, TOUGH!!

This flick is easily up there among my top 5 best flicks ever, I would not be surprized if this movie is not even better than 7 Grandmasters,,which has always been my personaly favourite!!!

This is definately a must have,,no matter what the cost,,there will be no dissapoinments!!

4 out of 5 stars I will admit that I do feel horrible that I have to give this VERSION of this movie a 4/5. THE REAL MOVIE IS EASILY A 5/5. .......2006-03-17

I have the tai seng version of this, and I don't know what they did with the editing, but I have never seen anyone try so hard to ruin a movie. The scenes are so jumbled, and it is so obviously not 90 min. on the dot. If that were the only problem, I would be fine with this dvd, they discussed on the commentary how they thought that some of the scenes were overcut most likely by the american distubtor. I know joseph kuo movies, and I know his cuts, he does it a lot, but somebody didn't like his cuts and decided to edit this himself. I am going to do some damage for sure......ahhh, at least I gotta see the ghostface killer and the great jack long going at it in this movie again.

The tai seng version I have is good sound and picture, and the commentary deserves at least a 4/5, it has bobby samuels doing it, so I just thought it was gonna be better, but it was pretty good.

As long as this is tai seng and released in 02, it will be the commentary version, the only reason I can recommend this. the fights are great, but they mean a whole lot more when you have all the emotion in them.

The first installment in this new OAV series brings back the character of Jubei Yagyu, but not the artists or story line from the popular 1993 feature Ninja Scroll. A baroque mixture of samurai adventures, historic figures (Jubei and Shiro were real people), pseudo-Christian millenialism, and standard anime action, Resurrection is set at the close of the civil wars that led to the unification of Japan in the 17th century. Tokisada Shiro Amakusa is regarded as the Son of God by a group of Christians rebelling against the newly established Tokugawa Shogunate. Jubei tries to negotiate Shiro's surrender to end the rebellion, but fails. The resulting slaughter of Shiro's followers sets in motion a complicated plot involving a prophecy that if the new Savior is rejected, he will be reborn as Satan. Resurrection is exceedingly gory, even by anime standards: heads are split open, a violent rape ends in a bloodbath, a disemboweled warrior fights with his intestines flailing like tentacles, crows pick at cadavers. At a time when Hollywood films and TV shows are being blamed for youth violence in America, viewers may wonder why such bloody entertainments haven't produced real-life violence in Japan. --Charles Solomon

2 out of 5 stars If you cant finish something, dont start it!.......2007-05-24

Ninja Resurrection is not the sequel to Ninja Scroll. This is a totally different Jubei. Still even after watching it with the knowledge of this not being apart of Ninja Scroll it still falls very far from being a decent anime. The story begins with some promise but falls short in so many areas. Character development is one of the biggest problems. The unfinished ending is the biggest problem and will leave you with a very bad taste in your mouth. Considering the length of the anime, there is no reason why the ending should be left the way it was. If your new to anime stay far away from this. I know the trailer for this movie would make you think all the 1 and 2 star reviewers are on drugs, but trust me this anime is not good. The same trick is used with Tekken and thats one of the worst animes I have ever seen. You want to see some action. Check out Ninja Scroll, Vampire Hunter D Bloodlust, 8 man after, or just check out my reviews concerning anime. I'm pretty fair with animes but I'm aware people do have different taste.

3 out of 5 stars It's just "not good...".......2007-04-29

Which isn't to say it's necessarily "bad," though I guess I'd describe it as such.

It's violent, gory, includes one or two completely extranneous sex/rape scenes, and doesn't really "conclude" like a completed work should. This was just a purchase on a whim based on the art and the back cover info. Sadly, for me it just didn't live up to its potential to be a "good" anime. Ican't give it more than 3 stars. 2.5 would be more accurate. I'd call it slightly sub-par, saved only by its action sequences, really... Even those are a bit over the top bloody. But some people might be into that. ;o]

NOT for kids. Honestly, not really sure who it *IS* for?

You'll probably like Ninja Scroll The Movie / The Series or Wrath of Ninja (Movie + OVA) better. Or try the Rurouni Kenshin Season One, Season Two or Season Three box sets or Inu-Yasha Season 1 / Season 2. Pretty much anything is better, really...

4 out of 5 stars Ninja Resurrection Fun But Way Too Short.......2007-01-29

First off let me tell you despite what may be said in other reviews THIS IS NOT A SEQUEL TO NINJA SCROLL. If you are expecting one then look elsewhere. Now having said that Resurrection does follow the exploits of a charater who is in fact Jubei Yagyu based on the historic Japanese swordsman and is not Jubei Kibagami the protagonist of Ninja Scroll. It would seem that Jubei and his crew have been hired to take down a group of Christians who are holding up in Shimabara with bloody results. The second episode is as equally bloody as a dark prophecy comes to fruition.

This anime fuses historical events and unrelenting action. The animation isn't half bad and the story line is coherent. This is not for those of you who are squeamish at the sight of gore since there is a great deal of it (the rape scene comes to mind) you might want to think twice if you are offended by such things. Not to mention the subject matter concerning Christianity might strike a nerve with some people. The only real major flaw is that it is only two episodes long and there is no resolution to the conflict. The reason for this is supposedly because of the subject matter and how it may have received a negative reaction from most western countries. Still if you like good action, a nice story, and have an hour or two to kill then pick this up at your local rental place before you buy.

1 out of 5 stars Oh God..I Have Sinned.......2007-01-13

That is how you will feel after watching this. I ran into this movie like years ago when it first came out and brought it thinking it was ninja scroll part 2. Man was I wrong. After watching this I felt like going to church or going into a corner and praying, especially after a scene where the bad guys are worshipping satan by standing up and chanting satan satan satan for like 2 minutes... here are some of the things you will see in this movie:

1. Demon Rape
2. Demon Ninja fighting with his intestines.
3. Dismembered Demon finger crawling into a womans uh..nether regions (and why? WHO THE HELL KNOWS)
4. Murder of Children

I might have let all that slide if the movie was actually good but its.. so bad.. the worst part is there is no conclusion. it just ends very abruptly during a very violent scene that leaves you feeling like."Whaaa??" Beware.

4 out of 5 stars A nice feudal anime.......2005-09-15

ok people, let's get things straight. THIS IS NOT THE NINJA SCROLL SEQUEL!!! this is a different jubei, a different time setting, and a different stroyline. about the storyline, it is just so damn spacious!!! at some points, i couldn't tell what the hell was going on until i watched it over and over. let me tell you somethin, though, the fighting scenes are cool, but the blood is a little transparent. being brought back to life throught sex is very interesting as well. the problem that mainly concerned me was the ending!!! want to know what i'm talking about go buy this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A relatively pleasing anime........2007-04-27

I recently purchased a bunch of miscellaneous anime, and had a viewing session over a few days.

Wrath of the Ninja actually was one of my more favored of the bunch. I watched the "movie" version. This is a relatively classic anime. The animation is good. I enjoyed the voice acting as much as most other decent shows/OVA's out there. I definitely preferred this over Ninja Cadets!, and far and above Harmagedon.

Spriggan (Special Edition) was another matter. I rather liked Spriggan, despite a less-than-perfect ending (I still thought the anime was better overall than Akira; by my preference anyway). I figure that, despite being of different genres Wrath of the Ninja was on par with Spriggan. I haven't watched the OVA feature included on the special edition yet, but I assume it will be of as high of quality if not higher quality than the "movie" version.

In all, I think this is worth a "buy" rating. Certain more so than Harmagedon or Ninja Cadets mentioned above.

4 out of 5 stars be ready to pause.......2007-03-27

this was a good buy. the movie of coarse was good, but i liked the mini series a little better. it goes a little more indepth to the story and explains a few things that were skipped. but hold a finger on the pause button, the subtittles run a bit fast and its hard to read it all in time. but well worth it.

3 out of 5 stars Its alright.......2007-03-04

Wrath of the ninja is a decent anime. By no means is this a classic. I'll tell a little bit about it without adding spoilers. Wrath of the ninja is about 3 ninja clans who are fated to combine their powers to fight off some evil threat. The plot is very predictable and cliche. The characters are developed pretty well and there's a good dose of action. A couple of gory scenes here and there. This isn't on the level of Ninja Scroll but its still pretty good. Nowhere near the best but far from the worst. Clockin' in at 87 mins. if your an anime collector this will fit right in with your collection.

1 out of 5 stars Discerning anime fans....do not buy!.......2007-02-28

This movie was extremely cliche and cheesy. Probally the worst anime I've ever seen besides maybe RG Veda. I tried to keep watching just to see the brief nudity mentioned but couldn't stand it past the first 10 mintues.

5 out of 5 stars back when anime was more adult.......2006-08-11

In the year 1580, Lord Nobunaga's undead armies ravage Japan, slaughtering all that stand in their way. Only one hope remains. A young ninja escapes her village's destruction armed with a mystical dagger, one of the three legendary weapons that can end the warlords rule. To do this she must join her fellow fugitives, bearers of the remaining blades, warriors who are destined to free Japan ... or die.

This is a two disc set with both the movie and the series I love it. I love "Wrath of the Ninja" every since it first advertise on television back in the 90's.

2 out of 5 stars WATCH THIS MOVIE WITH KIDS.......2007-03-07

This movie was not funny although it tried desperately,(perhaps thats why they didnt advertise it as a comedy).I got about 20 minutes through it and stopped.Only watched further along into because my kids saw it on the shelf(even they got bored with it).Although i saw it only 2 months ago..it is a vague memory.Do not buy this film unless u can get it real really cheap.Finding a respectable ninja/shinobi movie is harder than finding a good lasagne or shoes for that matter.Oh well the search continues,Any ideas?

1 out of 5 stars Not even Ando can save this train wreck.......2006-05-12

Honestly, the only reason I even considered this movie was because of the very beautiful Masanobu Ando. And it starts out interesting enough... but quickly goes down. The story focuses around three ninjas, friends from childhood. When one of them dies the other two split up and set out to avenge her death. This movie is campy, but not in a good way. The stunts are cheesy, the music is BAD, and the acting leaves a lot to be desired. I was embarrassed to be watching this one.

1 out of 5 stars This is not the Red Shadow I used to know.......2005-04-27

Just like the title... This is not the Red Shadow I used to know. Red Shadow is one of the famous Mangas back in 60's or earlier 70's, and was shoot in live-action TV series decades ago. Back in the 80's it was re-done into a whole new animation series which is what I grow up with, and the animation was a big-hit back then. Many toys, products were licensed under the animation line. I personally would say that the animation version of Red-Shadow was the best one. And I hope that they could make a compele series of Red Shadow Animation Series DVD.

In addition, the original manga is called "Masked Ninja: Red Shadow", and in the orignal story there are Red-Shadow (a school Teacher before he put mask on), Blue Shadow (a kid ninja who is smart), and White Shadow (a monk type of ninja who is older than Red Shadow and is his assistant). The original series has more like Batman/Spiderman/Superhero type of storyline, Red Shadow has two identities, and the other two ninjas are his sidekicks. Red Shadow even has a secret place where a man makes special weapons for them (Just like Q in James Bond). Kinda miss it.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining, but..........2005-04-19

Two things I immediately noticed: 1) Ancient china didn't have toenail clippers, 2) Nor did they have aerosol spray bottles... both of which were shown in the film. This cheapens it for me. While the action scenes were good, the acrobat scenes were highly unbelievable, and the part where Akakage disappeared in thin air were a bit over the top. That and the part where the master was creating fireworks from his fingertip. It was all done in a serious manner. If this was supposed to be a spoof movie it missed its mark big time. Maybe only a Japanese sense of humor would get it. I don't know. I did moderately enjoy the movie, despite the obvious cheesiness.

4 out of 5 stars Ninja A Go-Go!!!.......2004-12-30

This is a great movie. It is intended as a light hearted adventure. A younger generation's not so heavy journey through friendship. Maybe some people don't care about such things, but I do :).

It's hip ninja action with 2 male leads who try to do just that in that silly way that makes this a joy to watch. Personal issues arrise and we are witness to how 3 young friends interact with each other. In the end they come out showing what friendship is all about.

How can you not like the Ninja Perfect Landing? ;)

Sure it's not "American Pie" or whatever type of crap Hollywood garbage that you're used to...but that's what's so great about it. This guy probably got a little, cheap-ass, dollar store digi-cam and made this in his basement (now...if you've seen the movie then you'll most likely be thinking of the nerdy dudes 'Enterprise bridge' closet under the stairway, kinda cardboard hideout right about now) I mean seriously and honestly what's not to like about this film? Cheerleaders?...Ninjas?...Star Trek obsessed geeky types?...Flamboyantly gay arch nemises?...Catholic school girl minions?...(Yes, there are boobies too. Lots of them!..for no apparent reason even!)
The fight scenes are ridiculously entertaining (I challenge you not to laugh outloud at them, nay, I dare you! if not for just they're low, low budget pathetic-ness) So in conclusion, ignore everybody elses reveiw before me and take my word for it that this film may well have been the best to come out of the relative movie draught of 2003 (or whenever the hell it was made)

1 out of 5 stars Why would anyone even rent this?.......2004-07-01

I've never seen the film, I don't have to.
All I know is I'm sick of these White trash losers coming
into my video store and renting this crap.
If you like this movie or have a strong desire to rent it, then you ARE white trash and retarded! GET THE HELL OUT OF MY STORE!!!

The other night, I watched Cheerleader Ninjas. Now, don't think I ever considered the possibility this could be a good movie. No, I knew it would be bad, but I was hoping it would fit into the so-bad-it's-good category.

It doesn't.

Instead, it fits squarely into the it's-so-bad-it's-awful category.

Cheerleader Ninjas is a story about a flamingly-gay teacher at a Catholic reform school who wants to get revenge on a cheerleader troupe in a nearby high school. It would seem he was refused admittance to their team. So he gets a group of reformed Catholic prostitutes to beat the crap out of the cheerleaders. The cheerleaders retaliate by getting martial arts training and reluctantly join forces with the local nerds. Terrible fight scenes, gratuitous nudity, and a giant robot/dildo battle ensue.

The only thing this movie has going for it are the boobs, and that just doesn't float my boat. There are better movies out there with boobies, and it's frightening to think that Corey Haim and Corey Feldman flicks are some of these better movies.

The apparent film budget would have been just enough to rent a few of 'em, too, and maybe get a couple of six-packs, while the director was at it

You know when something is so bad that it is good? Well this one just stopped at bad. Some films are campy on purpose others are campy by accident or circumstance; this film is neither, it needs tossing on the campy fire. No structure, no story and no social redeeming themes or scenes.
The basic story; oh there is none. The dialog is, well, deplorable. Now there is a scene of a depantylated cheerleader that looks slightly better than Kathy Bates I "About Schmidt" (2003) but just barely. Looks like the film revolves around this sort of thing.
