Straight from the vault of Disney's bygone classics comes this 1960 family film about a boy who joins the circus, based on the book of the same name by James Otis Kaler. Kevin Corcoran (Old Yeller, Swiss Family Robinson) is unsurpassed as the earnest and endearing Toby Tyler, an orphan who lives with his poverty-stricken aunt and uncle until the day he is told he's a "millstone around their necks." When the circus comes to town, Toby runs away to join the vagabond life of the big top. Although his concessionaire boss is a con man, Toby makes fast friends with Ben Cotter (Henry Calvin) and Sam Treat (Gene Sheldon) who protect him and, in the end, receive much more from Toby than they give. The movie's best moments center on Toby's camaraderie with a mischievous chimp he names Mr. Stubbs. The final circus scenes of Toby's equine acrobatics with the pretty Mademoiselle Jeanette (Barbara Beaird), and comedic stunts with Mr. Stubbs are well worth the price of admission. The three-ring comedy is sweet and simple, sprinkled with a few wholesome life lessons. Marvelously directed in Disney's vintage style by Charles Barton (The Shaggy Dog), the overall effect will tug on a family's heartstrings and funny bone. (All ages) --Lynn Gibson

Given that for Russians, Pushkin's poem Eugene Onegin is sort of like Hamlet, Beowulf, and Lord Byron's Don Juan rolled into one melancholy tale of lost love and ennui among the gentry, it's surprising Russian filmmakers have balked at adapting the film. Having taken a stage production of Hamlet to Russia where it was rapturously received, self-confessed Slavophile actor Ralph Fiennes must have thought he was making reparation when he executive-produced and starred in this faithful adaptation of the film. With Martha Fiennes on board as director, it's something of a family affair with more than a little of the solemnity one often discovers in "personal projects". Pushkin's romanticism comes across amply, but little of his ferocious wit or, inevitably, the authorial voice that makes the poem so compelling, even in translation. Ralph Fiennes typecasts himself in the title role: his Onegin is yet another of the actor's wintry, haunted lovers in period dress (this time early 19th century). The character, a jaded roué from St. Petersburg, summers in the countryside where he inadvertently wins the heart of the impulsive Tatyana (Liv Tyler, the girl they book when Gwyneth Paltrow's busy). Onegin's casual attitude to her love leads to a tragic duel (magnificently tense and perfectly staged), and years later a chance meeting stirs up feelings of regret, triumph, and moral queasiness. Tears well in eyes, letters are sent and read, furs are ruffled in the snow. This is the highbrow end of costume drama: patrician in its literary purity, and rather admirable in its restraint and good taste, if a little dull. --Leslie Felperin

Pursuing what is unavailable.......2007-05-27
A modern day psychologist would sum up Evgeny Onegin's problem very simply: he pursues someone only when they are unavailable and lives to regret it. ONEGIN is a rather fine and lush and particularly correct adaptation of the Russian verse EVGENY ONEGIN (On-YA-gin) by Aleksandr Pushkin. Philandering playboy Evgeny Onegin, a rather bored aristocrat of St.Petersburg high society (Ralph Fiennes), inherits his uncle's country estate. He is amused at the provincial ways of the country folk and befriends a neighbor,Vladimir Lenski (Toby Stepehens).Through Lenski, Onegin is introduced to the aristocracy of the manor born class.A sister to Lenski's fiancee,Tatyana, (Liv Tyler) becomes enamoured with Onegin and risks everything by expressing her deep love for him.Onegin dismisses Tatyana's profession of love as silliness and breaks her heart.Onegin meanwhile has set his sights on Lenski's fiancee.Lenski defends her honour and is killed in a duel with Evgeny. We are pushed forward six years where Tatyana, now married to a Hussard soldier and integrated into Petersburg society, is spied at a party by Evgeny. He now has become entranced with the unavailable Tatyana and professes his love and she sadly informs him that he is too late and that she will honour her marriage vows.
Martha Fiennes has done a rather admirable job at capturing the times and the attitudes of 18th-century aristocratic Russia. From the lavish parties to a magnificently staged duel,Ms. Fiennes uses wonderful technique in assembling a beautifully scripted, acted and filmed movie that is very pleasing to the senses and very true to the time. Attention is paid to minute details in fully realizing this Russian masterpiece.Frankly, I am glad that this screenplay was adapted and shortened for viewing. Having seen the staged opera by Tchaikowsky, I found Martha Fiennes' rendition very accesible and quite enjoyable. It cut far more to the quick without destroying the necessary.
I would worship at The Temple of Ralph Fiennes.......2007-05-22
Yes, yes...amazing. Anything which would feature Ralph Fiennes overacting and making such faces...at the skating rink, the dual, the dance and in the carriage. Let's give Martha only projects which feature her eldest bro giving it his all.
What the heck?.......2007-05-21
So when does a movie stop in the middle and leave you with no closure? When you watch Onegin! It's really slow at the get go and then when you think the movie it finally going to pick up and get good it stops! And stops with no real conclusion as to what's going to happen to all involved! I did not like this movie one bit! I was highly disappointed and would recommend that people see anything else.
Beautiful story of unfullfilled love.......2007-05-20
The acting was very good with Ralph Fiennes hiding his emotional needs from the other charcters as well as himself, thereby destroying his potential happiness. Great sets, and atmosphere of period Russia. I enjoyed it immensely.
Intriguing.......2007-05-18
Russian literature has always been too complicated and epic for my taste. I bought this as a devoted Toby Stephens fan. After viewing the film, I was amazed to find out the story was originally in verse form. I fully intend to read Pushkin, in English of course. Ralph Fiennes as Onegin is tremendous as a jaded, cynical and tortured soul. Liv Tyler is breathtaking as Tatyana and Toby Stephens is delicious as Vladimir. All three live their roles taking the persona of the charactors they portray. This is definitely a keeper for me.

This warm romantic comedy by newcomer Maria Maggenti is a gay coming-of-age story framed by Walt Whitman's Leaves of Grass. Randy (Laurel Hillman) is a stoner, lesbian teenager who happens to be failing math and dating a married woman. One day, fellow student Evie (Nicole Parker) drives up to Randy's gas station in a Range Rover and flips her world upside down. Evie is privileged and popular. Randy is poor, impulsive, and according to the other students, a freak. Opposites attract when the two girls kick off their friendship in detention. The flirtation blossoms after Evie introduces tomboyish Randy to the joys of Whitman and opera. Randy returns the favor by acquainting the sheltered Evie with the problems and delights of mature, taboo love. There is a beautiful scene where the two consummate their courtship on Evie's birthday while Mom is out of town. The true test of their relationship occurs during the hilarious climax when angry families and friends chase the troubled girls into hiding. --Margaret Griffis

Movie.......2007-03-22
I have not seen this movie as of yet. Looking forward to it though.
It's ok.......2007-03-16
Not a great movie. In my opinion the performances didn't convince me (actually I was kind of disappointed with Laurel Holloman) and I couldn't trully get involved with the characters or the story. And to be honest found it kind of boring.Nicole Ari Parker is great though.
Truely Unbelivable Story Line.......2007-01-05
This is a cute coming to understand yourself story. Very low budget flick. I think it is something teen lesbians or I dono if I am a lesbian people should see. One of the main 2 characters is now a main character on the L Word, so that was very interesting to see; it was quite a surprise also. I would recommend people to see it; all in all.
The Incredibly True Adventures of Two Girls in Love.......2006-11-25
The movie shows the real meaning of love, for 2 girls that care so much about each other, would do what they did in order to be with one another, the movie is now and forever will be my favorite, for i have come to know that my soul mate is out their and it for shall be a woman.
Highly entertaining.......2006-11-03
This movie, although the story is unreal, is highly entertaining and well worth watching. I love the fact that the two girls are so different. One is so sure of herself and her sexuality and the other is slowly awakening. The scene were the mother enters the bedroom and goes crazy finding the two girls in bed together is a hoot.

Toby Tyler the great flick.......2007-06-14
Toby Tyler is one of the best kids' movies.....especially for boys. It's clean, funny and engages children
Perfect Family Movie.......2007-05-28
"Toby Tyler" is an excellent family movie and a rare one as well since it is suitable for every member of the family. I have watched "Toby Tyler" multiple times and find it as enjoyable now as when I first saw it as a child.
Toby Tyler (Kevin Corcoran, who was a Disney regular as a child and appeared in "Polyanna," "A Tiger Walks," and "Old Yeller," among others) is orphaned and living with his aunt and uncle. However, life is hard for Toby and he feels unloved. After his uncle makes him feel like a burden, Toby runs away to join a circus passing through town.
Toby works as a concessionaire for Mr. Tupper (Bob Sweeney, who also appeared in Disney's "Moon Pilot" and "Son of Flubber), who manages to make it appear as though he is helping Toby when he cons Toby regularly. For example, Mr. Tupper convinces Toby that he must share his tips with Mr. Tupper. Toby also finds a protector in Ben Cotter (Henry Calvin, "Babes in Toyland" and Sergeant Garcia in Disney's 1950's television series "Zorro"), who turns out to be a good friend to Toby, along with clown Sam Treat (Gene Sheldon, who also appeared in "Babes in Toyland" and "Zorro) and chimpanzee Mr. Stubbs.
Life is initially difficult for naïve Toby. He has a hard time focusing on his job and keeping food from Mr. Stubbs. Even though chaos seems to follow Toby, an opportunity arises for Toby to take center stage at the circus. Somehow things just never seem to go well for Toby, and he decides to leave the circus, but tragedy strikes. The end of this movie will bring smiles and make you want to watch this movie again in the near future.
Kevin Corcoran seemed to play the same character again and again. However, Corcoran excelled in "Pollyanna" and "Toby Tyler." Toby is an innocent in a wild world and we get an opportunity to see the world as Toby sees it. Even though Toby has some bad experiences, Toby also gets to do some very exciting things and for just a moment we can think back to an era when circuses visited smaller towns and it was common for boys to at least think about running away to join the hard life of the circus.
The marvelous thing about this movie is that it has action, excitement and humor, and yet is sufficiently tame for even the youngest members of the family. The portions of the circus that we see add to the excitement of the story. I also enjoyed how this movie ends. Though we know that life is complicated and messy, for a brief moment life is joyful and unrestrained and we can all too briefly recapture all the possibilities that exist when you are a child.
Enjoy!
Great old movie!.......2007-04-26
This was one of my favorite movies as a child! It was unavailable for so long, I'm very glad they finally released it on DVD!! The remastering is excellent, good color.
Wonderful Movie!.......2007-01-20
I agree with the person that said this didn't get the exposure it should have. I loved this movie as a child, and am now showing it to my kids. Great lessons in being responsible, work ethic, and kindness(an almost lost trait today). This is a great movie, and I highly recommend this for a family night movie!
Great family movie.......2007-01-16
This is a great movie for the whole family. Totally clean, and a good moral to the story. This is a timeless classic every little kid should see. Not necessarily action packed, but none the less a good movie.

CLUBLAND IN A GREAT CLUB!.......2004-10-18
What a movie! Rarely do we see in motion pictures such raw and honest reality as we do in CLUBLAND. This sexy film about stardom and the difficult choices that come with it, explores the morality and consequences of a rock star life, and the sacrifices it takes to get there. You will not be disappointed by this very worthy film from the producer of THELMA AND LOUISE. As well, a fascinating and moving soundtrack complements the film.

From the beginning, Storm Scooters and Razor Sharp Tricks seems a little out of touch. The half-hour video starts out with a man building a wooden scooter, "The Shavor," for his son. Excuse me, a wooden scooter? It features 15 riders doing cool spins, flips, jumps, and grinds. Although the tricks are neat, it becomes a little tedious to watch the same maneuvers over and over again. Sometimes the footage has an artsy bent, incorporating brown-and-white video and hip-sounding music. It would be a great video for nonverbal kids because probably fewer than 10 words are spoken throughout. Injuries to kids and their wheels are also on display--people fall, wreck their scooters, and do dangerous stunts, such as scooting over someone lying down. If I were going to buy a single scooter video, it wouldn't be this one. Try Scooter Mania for the easier-to-understand beginner tips. --Gillian Clow

For Diehard Scooter Fans Only.......2001-01-15
Storm Scooters shows all of the basics of riding a scooter- speed, braking, tricks, and acceleration. But I'd only suggest this DVD for big scooter fans. While it shows many scooters tricks, including wheelies and off-road riding, I think that only heavy scooter junkies such as myself would enjoy this DVD. While watching, I learned several new tricks that I have tried on my own scooter. But if you just want to watch this movie and you're not crazy about scooters, stay away from it.
