First, a few facts. Dolph Lundgren expresses emotions ranging from stoic to, well, really stoic. There are holes in the story large enough to pilot the Exxon Valdez through without spilling a drop. And the film is littered with action movie clichés. But none of this matters. The Punisher succeeds because it stays true to its origins, the Marvel comic of the same name. Studio-engineered films such as Batman never quite capture the mixture of loyalty and betrayal, justice and revenge, moral ambiguity and emotional truth that are the hallmarks of the graphic novel. Films such as Darkman do. So does The Punisher. Lundgren plays Frank Castle, a dedicated policeman whose family was wiped out in a mob hit. He went underground (literally) and, as the Punisher, has been exacting his revenge, killing 125 mobsters in the past five years. But when the yakuza (Japanese Mafia) moves in on the mob's territory and kidnaps their children, it's up to the Punisher to rescue the kids. The action blazes, Lundgren (a former full-contact karate champ) moves with feral grace, the production design is a pleasure to watch, and director Mark Goldblatt (whose credits as editor include such big films as Starship Troopers and True Lies) has a clean, efficient style. --Geof Miller

The Punisher PSP UMD Movie MODEL- 17910 VENDOR- UMD MOVIE FEATURES- The Punisher PSP Movie An ordinary lawman goes outside the law to carry out his own brand of justice in this dark-themed thriller. Frank Castle (Thomas Jane) is an FBI agent who deeply loves his wife and son, but is also strongly devoted to his work. Castles investigation of a powerful crime cartel leads to a gunfight which claims the life of a young boy, whose father is underworld kingpin Howard Saint (John Travolta). Furious and eager for revenge, Saint arranges for Castle and his family to be murdered in retaliation. However, while Castles wife and son are killed, he somehow survives, even though hes believed to have perished. Bent on stopping Saint once and for all, Castle remakes himself as The Punisher, a ruthless and heavily armed killing machine who will not rest until Saint and his crew have been wiped clean from the Earth. Based on a Marvel Comics character first introduced in 1974, The Punisher also stars Rebecca Romijn-Stamos, Laura Elena Harring, Roy Scheider, and Kevin "Big Sexy" Nash. -- SPECIFICATIONs ----------------------------------- MPAA Rating : R Genre : Action Thriller, Comic-Book Superhero Film Theatrical Date : 2004 Run Time : 123 minutes Distributor/Studio: Lions Gate sonystyle.com

The impressively muscular chest of Tom Jane is the focal point of The Punisher, a movie based on a Marvel Comics superhero. Frank Castle (Jane, Deep Blue Sea) retires from the FBI, which means--as any moviegoer expects--that his family is toast. Howard Saint (John Travolta, Face/Off), a shady Florida businessman whose son was killed in Castle's last mission, orders a hit not only on Castle's wife and child, but also on his parents and a whole bunch of aunts, uncles, cousins, and so forth. The killers shoot Castle himself in the chest, but he inexplicably survives and--as any moviegoer expects--sets out to even the score. Implausibly, given his sometimes curious and roundabout methods, he succeeds. Also featuring Will Patton (Armageddon) as an oily thug, Laura Harring (Mulholland Drive) as Saint's fleshpot wife, and Rebecca Romijn-Stamos (X-Men) as a waitress with bad taste in men. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:
REALLY DISAPPOINTING! ONE OF THE WORST MARVEL MOVIES.......2007-06-17
remember buying the Amazing Spider-man issue that first features the Punisher. I was never a die hard fan,but certainly thought he was cool. I wanted to like this movie and thought it would be one of the better Marvel Comic films.......I was wrong! This movie was really bad and my 2 star rating is generous! I don't even know where to begin with what went wrong. They did not capture the dark, gritty essence of the comic book! The movie was almost laughable! I have not seen the director's cut yet,but I really don't think they can fix this one with some added scenes. If your a fan your gonna buy it any way,but I don't think it's worth the 1/2 inch space it takes on my DVD shelf!
"I Can Hear What You're Thinkin'....." A Truer Vision Of Castle.......2007-06-13
The two versions (yes, rerelease...blahblahblah...waste of our money to make more studio profit....blahblahblah...sorry, I HAD to say it in some form) of this particular adaptation do a great job in showing us the demons that haunt Frank Castle. They do an adiquite (sp?) job in showing us the ambiguous nature of his quest (which ranks right up there with Travis Bickle as who-do-you-root-for? characters), and they make Frank a sympathetic character. Someone you can almost (but not quite) excuse for his harsh brand of justice.
And herein lies the problem - the Punisher, as envisioned in recent Marvel series featuring him, isn't a hero. What he is is a sick man, a serial killer hell-bent on slaughtering as many humans as possible with only him being judge as to whether the victims were deserving of death. On a karmic scale, he only rates higher than aformentioned serial killers or blitz killers because he DOES target scum. As of right now (thanks to the firstly hilarious, now downright serious penning of Garth Ennis), the Punisher is one of the least heroic "heroes" in the Marvel pantheon, and instead of showing us THAT part of Castle's psyche, we get the homogenized, almost-justified version, a clear example of Hollywood not having guts enough to show us moral ambiguity for fear of cutting into mass profit.
Having said this, however, with the extended cut, as in "Daredevil," we get to see an excised plotpoint that would've given us another view, and not a very nice one, of poor deluded Frank. What we should've seen in the first cut of the movie, and we finally get to see here, is Frank forcing a man who'd been his best friend to commit suicide because the man had betrayed him. Does Willis deserve death? Maybe. But who made Frank the judge? A man so obviously, justifyably, addled by the slaughter of his family. THIS is what we should see of the Punisher character - a superskilled Travis Bickle quite able to do what he does well, but leaving us to wonder if he should?
Having said this, however, the movies - both cuts - deserve to be on any superhero movie collector's shelf because director-writer Hansleigh doesn't chicken out as much as the corporate puppetmasters did. He GETS the character, thus pushes the maximum out of Thomas Jane, who also gets it. They both do justice to this rather rich figure of the comic book world and do as much as they're allowed to do to show his ambiguity, his illness, and his tortured soul.
The movie also has a very gritty, real-world feel. This is important because the Punisher was never a man of the glittery super-hero world. His isn't the glamorus high-tech team existance, nor does he crave acceptance. In this film, as in the comic book, Frank knows he's outside what anyone normal considers moral and legal behavior. He doesn't love what he does. The only higher call he feels out of it is the satisfaction of one more bad guy off the streets forever. Jane's interpretation mirrors this - He no longer feels gentle emotions. He no longer ALLOWS himself to feel gentle emotions. He can never have a normal life again. He must do what he does simply because there's no one else to do it.
While I like John Travolta, and his Howard Saint harkens back to the interesting villain he played in "Pulp Fiction," his character simply isn't as interesting as Castle. He plays him as a whacked-out sadist pretending to live as normal, but there's no ambiguity from him beyond this. We KNOW he's evil, and we're quite glad when Frank kills him - his whole screwy family as well.
And maybe this is why the extended cut is the most fascinating. We're allowed to, at least a little, feel the uneasiness of Frank Castle. A once-good man, perhaps a good man still underneath his psycopathy, but one we know is destroyed a little more for doing what he must to the Howard Saints of the world.
By the way, I do recommend, if you're only going to buy one (and, if, *sigh*, like me, you buy both, either get one of 'em used or heavily discounted), to get the theatrical release. There's more behind-the-scenes goodness that shows how they were able to get such a slick movie for so relatively little budget. The extended cut, though, IS the story that should've been told the first time.
2.5 stars this extended version doesn't make It better.......2007-05-22
Well the title of my review says it all however as a completist in my Super-hero genre of films I would own this version over the original.
The Punisher (Extended Cut).......2007-05-14
This newer adaptation of this Marvel Comic character is the best. True, it is violent. However, that is true to the comic also. The theatrical release was good, but due to editing, too much was left out. This puts it back in and returns the film to it's original vision. This DVD allows one to see the "whole story in context".
Watch "Death Wish" instead.......2007-05-06
I had a feeling when I saw the previews for this movie that it wasn't going to be very good. I was right.
This is an aborted attempt at translating a very different kind of "hero" a la Marvel comics to the screen. It had been done before, and it was pretty bad then too. (Anyone remember Ivan Drago from "Rocky IV"? He played The Punisher a little better than Tom Jane in this movie, and that should be all you need to know about the quality of the acting here.)
The job of "The Punisher" in this film is to strut around without a shirt on, act like a darker Toby Keith/gunslingin' coolguy, and take vengeance on the people who murdered his family. Keep in mind he's been shot five, six times on the orders of John Travolta (he's a gangster with a big car lot and people who dress in all black). Was he at least seriously injured. Nah. Some voodoo witch doctor black guy who just happened to be around when the slaughter of his family took place and was also miraculously unharmed fixed him in a day or two.
Nope. Frank Castle, this seemingly invincible cop who is bent on smoking cigarettes and drinking hard liquor while plotting revenge, doesn't even have a scar on this body after being blown up and shot multiple times.
He is miraculously delivered back to the exact city in a very short time and begins a game of bloodthirsty "intrigue" using one of the villain's henchmen so obvious and predictable it makes Andy Warhol's movie "Sleep"
seem unpredictable.
But the other people who live in the apartment with Jane's Punisher--fatboy, loser, and reformed heroin addict potential love interest--put the nails in the already descending coffin of this awful excuse for a movie. They are so badly drawn and so badly acted that you wonder if they are going to fall off the screen or start laughing wildly. They try a few "Leave It To Beaver" moments in between Castle's drinking and intent haunted gaze on his firearms.
But he is so haunted, vengeful, so cool that he can't work up too much dialogue with them. That might have required some acting. He's the demented silent type, a less talented Gary Cooper with a different agenda. A big Russian guy (an extra from Barnum and Bailey's?) and Castle have a big brawl, each suffering injuries that would knock anyone unconscious or kill them very quickly. Another thing: The Punisher, though mortal as anyone else, does not seem to have the problem of blood loss.
In a completely cold, bland, and unmoving series of Cowboy Draw Your Gun pastiche, Castle takes his vengeance on the ever absent Howard Saint (John Travolta is who you see, but he's supposed to playing a role with that name). Then, ripping off "The Crow" (an actually good movie about vigilantism), he sets ablaze the ominously luxuriant parking lot of this arch criminal.
"The Punisher" is one of the most disturbing and well written characters in the history of Marvel. It is sad indeed that any Hollywood exec with a reachable cellphone number and a chunk of change can take rich art and trash it like this.
