Amazon doesn't list Thai as one of the languages on the DVD. This movie is in Thai and Cantonese with English subtitles.

5 out of 5 stars NEVER BETTER ALMOST MADE ME WET MYSELF.......2007-05-17

The Pang brothers are amazing. This by far was one of the best asian horror movies I've ever seen. I't had plenty of great scares and the story was very good. And by far one of the best endings. Like most asian horror movies it dosn't need crazy effects to scare you (though this movie had more than the norm) and the progression of the move was pretty much flawless. Anyone who like a good scary movie pick this on up and any other from the Pang brothers, I've seen 4 of their movies now and I was impressed by them all

4 out of 5 stars I See Dead People.......2007-05-10

Even for a reasonably seasoned horror-phile this movie made my skin crawl - atleast for the first half where the main character discovers that she is endowed with 'extra-ordinary' insights subsequent to her corneal transplant. Overall, the theme hems to the expected formula and the eventual resolution is more-or-less predictable. However, the ambience for the first half of the movie is extremely successful at being *creepy*.

Stay away if you are looking for mindless gore. Think The Others or The Sixth Sense instead. 'The Eye' employs atmosphere & tight framing to create nauseating claustrophobic chills. It manipulates your imagination more than the visual senses.

The only reason I give it a 4 stars is because I felt that the latter half of the movie wasn't quite upto the standards set by the former. Most of the strong points of the presentation are exhausted by the first half. But then again, it is my subjective opinion only. And oh, the movie is definitely worth a watch.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best among Asian horror flicks!.......2007-04-26

I watched this a few years ago, and a repeat viewing still gave me the creeps. This is one of the best efforts by the Pang brothers, and the storyline is interesting and gripping. We have a blind gal, Mun who receives a corneal transplant and is able to see again. BUT, her vision comes at a price...she is now able to see the 'dead' as well, and this is what makes the story truly scary and unique...its the way we are exposed to the supernatural elements that Mun is able to see. E.g. the dead kid who committed suicide after failing an exam, the creepy mom and child at the restaurant who come back every day to 'taste' the food, the angry spirit of an art student who doesn't want Mun sitting in her chair...all these scenes are so well set-up and executed that they are able to elicit scares with the simplest of special effects. The actress who plays Mun was excellent, and we truly empathise with her unwelcome 'gift'. On the whole, I'd rate this a must-see in the field of Asian horror.

5 out of 5 stars I liked it..................2007-04-12

The only thing negative I can say about this movie is it takes a few minutes to get interesting but once it starts it is a nicely done suspense movie. Mann gets a cornea transplant and starts seeing visions that belong to the donor. Together with her psychotheraphist she discovers the truth about the donor and that history repeats itself.

5 out of 5 stars Wing Chun: The Science of In-Fighting.......2007-03-09

This instructional dvd on Wing Chun is dated, but don't let that keep you from buying it - appreciate this dvd for the time it was produced. Even though it was produced in the 70s, it was very-well filmed and even a novice can learn from it. I would rate this dvd superior to many instructional martial arts being produced with today's technology which seem to be more about theatrics & CGI than instruction. As with any instructional dvd, do NOT expect to become a master by just viewing it, seek out a certified instructor & use the dvd as a training tool to perfect your skills.

2 out of 5 stars Helpful but skimpy.......2007-02-02

This dvd is somewhat helpful, but has no real depth to it.
It is dated, which isn't really bad, but you will notice it and I would like to make you aware of it.
It got a 2 star rating because it is Wing Chun, because routines were done right and because the price was right.
If you are looking for a home course to make you good at Wing Chun, this may help but it will not make you an expert by any stretch of the imagination.

5 out of 5 stars Good Introduction to Wing Chun.......2006-12-13

A good introductory DVD to the art of Wing Chun. The demonstration is from one of Wing Chun's most famous instructors. The DVD is older however and similar to a school video. It can lose your attention at times. Overall, there is good information on the DVD. As a Wing Chun instructor [1], I recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars Great DVD.......2006-11-09

Despite the 1960s-type music at the beginning, this is a really excellent DVD on wing chun, with almost nothing extraneous. I keep watching it over and over again, and it really reinforces what I am learing at the wing chun school I attend. The teacher here clearly really knows his art. What I especially like is the slow detailing of each concept, but also they show the applications. For instance, they show sil lim dao (the first form in wing chun), and the next chapter is the "street application" of each part of sil lim dao. There is a lot "hidden" in wing chun, that you can only see on film (i.e. not from a book), and you get to see it here. Wing chun is really a lot more flexible and also more aggressive than many people think (what I mean by flexible is that, the forms show you the moves, but it is like chess, just because you know the moves individually doesn't mean you can put them together to win a chess match. The application side is how you use the moves, and like chess, it is almost infinite). A lot of people will see something and then say, "wow I didn't know that was in wing chun", but it is. It is really a good DVD on wing chun. I highly recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars A Great start DVD of Wing Chun.......2006-07-22

This is the first Wing Chun DVD I started off with. It covers some useful basic theories and concepts of Wing chun such as simultaneous block/attack, attack/protect centerline, redirecting force, deflection, armtrapping, minimum movement maximum efficiency. Shows 1 or 2 application usage for each of the 8 blocking/attacking forms of Wing chun.

Of the 3 empty hand forms of Wing Chun, this DVD does not cover any Chum kiu or Biu gee or barely. Only Sil lim tao and form breakdown, Chi sao one/two hand demonstration, retreat/advance footwork, shifting angles, and basic kick attacks.

A great start off DVD. I learned some useful fighting concepts and strategies that I can use almost immediately in a few days! Wing Chun is a very effective fighting system even on the streets. I can almost say it has an advantage over boxing because it uses simultaneous arms and leg attacks. Only a few DVDs ever found starring Sifu Wong Shun Leung. If you want to learn the other two empty hand forms or other advanced Wing Chun, also look for DVDs that has William Cheung or Gary Lam.

5 out of 5 stars Be a thinker!!.......2007-01-18

I have over a hundred and twenty books on martial arts. I have around forty to fifty dvds and tapes on the subjects of Wing Chun, Tai Chi, BJJ, Baguazhang, Xing-I, and much more. Amongst the Wing Chun dvds that I have are the series hosted by Benny Meng. Which I consider to be an excellent work. Yet there were some blanks that needed to be filled in.
In Mr. Michael Wong's dvd, some of these blanks were filled in. I purchased the fighting arts and self defense dvds, since the price was so good. Once I viewed them, I went and purchased the whole Wing Chun series.
One thing that is important in Martial Arts is that it be "ALIVE". You learn the form, system, kata, movements or whatever you would like to call it and then you practice on someone. In Mr. Wong's dvds, he emphasizes this. He states that you must train with an opponent that is not just doing what you wish him to do. That is why in time past they invented push hands and sticky hands. They had no way to safely test their skills with one another. So they had to devise a way to work with an opponent in a safe fashion but still get the feel of an uncooperative adversary. This is why Judo, Aikido and BJJ does what they do. Almost all their moves are made so that they can be performed on a partner without killing the other person. Hence they get the feel of an opponent that is fighting them.
When it comes to striking though, we have not been able to test our skills safely up until the past fifty or so years. With the advent of plastics and other essential materials, the striking arts can now practice with almost the same amount of intensity as a grappling art.
(Sorry to go off on a tangent, but on with what I thought of about Mr. Wong's Dvds. )

I believe that he sticks mainly within the parameters of Wing Chun. I don't believe that he chases hands (at least not too much), as one of the other writers said, yet I would say that one should investigate the art through several sources. In Benny Meng's DVDs (Who is the curator of the Wing Chun museum, by the way) he lists a side kick as part of the Wing Chun arsenal, so I do not see why anyone would think that a side kick is inappropriate for Wing Chun. Another issue that was brought up is simultaneous blocks and punches. This is not par for the course in any Wing Chun system that I have seen. With the exception of Bui Ji. True simultaneous blocking and striking must be preformed with one arm. If you are saying that Mr. Wong doesn't use Tan Sau while punching, or if you are saying that he doesn't perform Bui Ji in the right way. I must say that you are mistaken. If you wish an art with simultaneous blocking and striking, you would be much better off with Xing-I or Hsing Yi if you prefer.

We have the internet, dvds, cds and other learning devises. The old masters of the past martial arts did not have these options. They had a teacher and maybe a book or two. The teacher said this and they did it. What option did they have???
So I would purchase Mr. Wong's dvds if you are interested in Wing Chun. But I would also purchase from other recognized teachers ( such as the above mentioned, plus William Cheung, Garrett Gee and Randy Williams, etc.) on the art then compare and find the truth of the matter. Then see what works for you.
On last thought (sorry for blathering on). A greyhound cannot be a good sled dog and a Siberian Husky will never be the fastest dog a the track. So go out and find what martial art is right for you and pursue it.

4 out of 5 stars Wing Chun made easy.......2006-07-02

Everything I read in the review prior to buying the DVD was absolutely true...that in itself speaks volumes, after there are many such DVD's to choose from.

Having done a few months of Wing Chun the DVD helped further my training, specially completing my training in Siu Lam Tao.

2 out of 5 stars Are you kidding me?.......2006-03-25

I didn't find this video helpful in any way. In fact, the video was more funny than useful. I can't decide what was the most comical, between the stream of conscious dialog, the interview with a "law enforcement" official, or the scenes of the "master" filmed with a camcorder on the front lawn. As I watched this DVD, I could not help feel that I was being punked.

This is an awesome training DvD for Wing Chun! Sometimes the Dvd menu/format can be a little confusing at first but otherwise it's top notch. I can hardly wait to get thru this one and order another one of this guys DvDs. I was able to get this at a real bargain on Amazon for about 14$ usually this guys stuff is way higher. I will probably wait though for another one to go on sale and grab it! This is a real bargain!

Description

Wing Chun is widely recognized as one of the fastest styles in the world. It has a speed and directness of action that is difficult to match. Ideal for self defense as a starting point for further study of Martial Arts or simply as a hobby. Wing Chun is both challenging and rewarding and can be practiced anywhere. This DVD is based solely on Wing Chun as a self defense art. It draws on all three of the original forms but there is little or no training in specific movements or the forms themselves. Instead, the training is centered on real life application and situations that may arise. In its original form Wing Chun is already an outstanding self defense art but by drawing on his own extensive knowledge, Sifu Wong has created this Wing Chun hybrid to speed learning and make the techniques practical for all. Making use of a partner for much of the training, you will learn how to apply the techniques to people rather than dummies or in thin air. This form of teaching helps you to understand the energies and forces involved and also demonstrates how the techniques do not require great strength or flexibility to be able to use. Aimed to be an introduction into self defense, this DVD will give you an insight into the world of self preservation and martial arts that is available to everyone but exploited by few.

Bit fast and hard to follow at first, but master wong gives it to you in fast and slow motion...and you can pick and choose the various levels of training (close in.....amber zone..green zone..etc).

I am glad it is in my martial arts library

1 out of 5 stars Particular Wong.......2007-01-19

This DVD might work for someone who has never trained any martial arts.
I had high expectations on this DVD and was dissapointed on Master Wongs performance (or Particular Wong as we came to know him, since every 3rd work is "particular"... which is not a point however).
He does manage to explain the basics of Wing Chun but fails to execute them in action. The main problem is that all his moves are so carefully planned that its like a dance. A Bad dance. Since Master Wong antisipates the incoming attacks he pays 100% attencion on his techniques making him self open to ANY other attack. Which is kind of scary look at. Even though he explains the same things over and over again this DVD is hard to follow. And this is not due the language barrier (I speak 7 languages).
I try not to only complain about the DVD. I pay respect to any one who has devoted them selfs to martialarts. It does have few nice techniques and ideas. But I would not recommend this to advanced practiseners.
I have trained activly for few decades. Several years in China and in Japan.

This DVD does show some good techniques for basic self defense, including being attacked armed and unarmed. People that give this DVD a low rating are most likely disappointed because it is for SELF DEFENSE, not a guide to"whooping a**."

The reason I gave this a 4 rather than a 5 is the lack of detailed explaination. Most of this can be understood visually, but you are more than likely going to need to watch each lesson many times to fully learn the techniques.

I would definatly recommend practicing these moves with a friend, so if you need to use this in real life, you will be familiar and comfortable with it.

4 out of 5 stars Great Video.......2004-11-17

I took Wing Jitsu for a year (This art was invented by my instructor) and always liked the wing chun side of it the best. I work late hours so I can not take a class so I have decided to get videos and work out with my fiends.

This video has some really good stuff. The only reason I gave it 4 stars and not 5 is cause they don't do a good job of covering the very basic concepts. That worked out for me cause I already knew them pretty much but if you have never take wing chun you may want to start with Wing Chun: The Science of In-Fighting. I know a lot of people say that you can not learn kung fu from a book or DVD but in the old days in China a lot of people learned from book as long as you have some one to practice with you should be able to learn from this DVD. I have already learned most of this DVD and can not wait to get the next one.

4 out of 5 stars Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung.......2004-10-17

Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 by William M. Cheung

Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 1 is part of a 5 volume series by William Cheung. The series is available on VHS or DVD. I strongly recommend that you buy the DVD version. DVD's can be played on a home DVD player attached to the TV, a small, portable DVD player which can almost fit in your pocket, if you wear pants with large pockets like those military style dungaree pants some police and paramedics are wearing now days, or you can play DVD's on a laptop or note book computer that has an installed DVD/cd player. This would enable you to take your DVD lessons with you where ever you go and to view them whenever you have time. You can watch DVD's in Slow Motion or speeded up. You can freeze a scene to examine it as a still picture. You can capture images. DVD's have an interactive potential for the viewer which the VHS machines lack. This characteristic supports the viewers learning requirements for understanding a subtle or difficult move or concept being studied.

Wing Chun is the style of Kung Fu Bruce Lee learned before he developed his own style of Jeet Kune Do. Although, Bruce Lee created Jeet Kune Do in an attempt to develop a simpler yet superior means of fighting, he remained influenced by Wing Chun and incorporated some of its concepts into Jeet Kune Do. You will see it for yourself If you watch this video series by William Cheung and compare it with Jeet Kune Do by reading his books and maybe watching some videos of Jeet Kune Do such as the video adaptation of Bruce Lee's Fighting Method by Ted
Wong and Richard Bustillo.

Wing Chun is very unique from most traditional styles of Kung Fu or Karate. Simplicity is its main characteristic. There are only 3 stances which feel some what more natural than the many classical Kung Fu or Karate stances. Strikes and punches are thrown from the middle of the chest. The fist is given a flick of the wrist at the last instant upon contact with its target. I compare this to the flick of the wrist at the last instant as a base ball is pitched to add a little extra velocity to it. This manner of punching is very different from the traditional hand on hip and twist of the fist at the moment of contact found in classical Kung Fu and Karate.
Kicks are kept low, usually not higher than the opponent's waist. There is no exageration of the move's execution, such as the wide sweeps, large circles, and exagerated force used in classical blocks and strikes.

The strategy and attitude of a Wing Chun practitioner seems more similar to that of aikido and jujitsu practioners in that the practitioner of wing chun seeks to harmonize with his opponents force rather than to oppose it.

Volume 1 of Wing Chun begins a demonstration of the Sil Lim Tao form three times. Karate practitioners would think of it as a simple kata using only hand techniques.

Next, exercise drills of basic blocks are demonstrated. In contrast to classical Kung Fu and Karate where students are taught to block first, then counter with a strike or kick. Wing Chun practioners use both of their hands to block and strike or kick at the same time.

Demonstrations of Wing Chun basics are shown more than once from different angles.

William Cheung describes Wing Chun's strategy as being four steps or phases of attacking an opponent's balance, creating an opening in the opponent's defense, controlling the opponent's elbow and maneuvering the opponent into a position in which his arms become crossed and therefore unable to fight back when trapped in that position.

William Cheung demonstrates defenses against various punches, strikes and kicks. He and his assistant demonstrate combinations and the rolling punch technique.

Foot work is demonstrated by his assistant. This leads to demonstration of the Chum Kil form and its applications because Chum Kil incorporates foot work and kicks into the form.

William Cheung and his assistant end volume 1 of Wing Chun by demonstrating a means of Chi meditation.

I think this video series offers useful information and techniques to consider for every martial artist. If you appreciate intelligent systems of fighting, you will not be disappointed with this series. However, some people might have not much use for volume 4 which is about fighting with chinese butterfly knives and a long staff called a dragon pole.

4 out of 5 stars Good Wing Chun DVD.......2004-11-27

This DVD has a lot of good stuff in it. I do think they should have put the Chi sau information befor the Bil Gi form cause they put all three forms so close together with not as many technics in between as I would have liked. Also when he is teaching some of the Chi sau technics he does not do a real good job explaining it but if you watch what he does closly you can figure it out so I am still giving the dvd 4 stars.

4 out of 5 stars Wing Chun Kung Fu Volume 2 by William Cheung.......2004-10-17

Wing Chun Volume 2 by William Cheung

This Volume of Wing Chun lessons demonstrates the Bil Jee form, the third form of Wing Chun after Sil Lim Tao and Chum Kilj, both of which were demonstrated in Volume 1. The demonstration is done twice by William Cheung. After the second demonstration, William Cheung's assistant performs broken sequences of moves from the Bil Jee form for which William Cheung explains and demonstrates the application of the sequence of moves.

Next, William Cheung instructs about the pressure point targets on the body of the opponent to strike. This is called dim mak in chinese. In Japanese styles, it's called atemi or sometimes kyusho.

William Cheung prepares us for Chi Sao, a very unique exercise to develop ambidextrious skill in hand techniques, reflexes, harmony with the opponent's kinetic energy to sharpen perception, timing and in general fluid execution of techniques, by having us practice the moves of Chi Sao with one hand while the other is stationary on the hip. Then, the other hand is put through the same drill while the first hand is held stationary on the hip.

William Cheung gradually instructs us into using both hands in Chi Sao exercises and introduces techniques, tactics and short strategies to trap the opponents hands and arms to open up his defense and imobilize his arms by thoughtful manuevering and keeping William Cheung's "BOEC" strategy in mind while looking for the moment of opportunity to execute the strategy.

This series of Wing Chun videos and DVD's is full of useful tips to use in any style of fighting. Any serious martial artist will appreciate the wealth of practical application of the moves demonstrated by William Cheung and his assistant in this series.

5 out of 5 stars Wing Chun Kung Fu, Volume 5 by William M. Cheung.......2004-10-20

Wing Chun Kung Fu, Volume 5 by William M. Cheung

This volume 5 of the video or DVD series simultaneously summarizes basic concepts already covered in previous volumes in a clever, almost imperceptible manner of blending the concepts in with some new scenarios.

General topics covered in this volume include Wing Chun Fighting Strategy, Tactics and Techniques to deal with other fighting styles in opening moves, Dim Mak, defense against various confrontation scenarios against an armed assailant wielding various weapons, at the conclusion of this volume William Cheung and his assistant perform the Chi Meditation ritual again.

Wing Chun Kung Fu fighting strategy integrates a unique combination of basic, elemental concepts to form the strategy into the system as it is learned and practiced. These are the basics: guarding the center line of the body from attack, attacking the opponent's balance, opening the opponent's defense to counter attack, gaining control of his elbow and maneuvering him or setting him up to have his arms crossed to which will hamper his efforts to attack and provide the opportunity for the defender to take the offensive at the moment of best opportunity. Other elements of Wing Chun strategy include avoiding a clash of force against force or power of the defender against power of the attacker. In this regard Wing Chun shares with aikido and jujitsu practitioners a similar strategy and attitude in dealing with an attack.

William Cheung's series of Wing Chun Kung Fu demonstrations on VHS or DVD is consistent with the information contained in James Yimm Lee's book, "Wing Chun Kung Fu" as well the books authored by William Cheung such as "Advanced Wing Chun Kung Fu." The VHS and DVD series bring the illustrations of these books to life.

Any Karate or Kung Fu practitioner will be able to appreciate what Wing Chun Kung Fu has to offer or contribute to their own practice of martial arts.

Although this series of Wing Chun Kung Fu demonstrations is available on DVD or VHS, I recommend that you buy this series on DVD so that you can replay sequences of moves and the applications of moves in fighting in slow motion or freeze scenes for better examination.

Other titles of books authored or co-authored by William Cheung include:
        Advanced Wing Chun Kung Fu,
Wing Chun Kung fu/Jeet Kune Do: a comparison
Wing Chun Bil Jee: The Deadly Art of Thrusting Fingers
        Kung Fu Dragon Pole
