Charlize Theron is the latest stunning blonde to be hanging around some big ape in a Hollywood movie, this one a remake of the 1949 semi-classic with echoes of the superior King Kong. Theron plays the daugher of an American researcher killed by poachers in Africa. The baby gorilla left in her care grows up to become a hugely tall and broad specimen named Joe, living in the mountains as a mostly unseen legend among people who live there. Along comes an eco-minded emissary (Bill Paxton) from a California sanctuary, who talks the jungle girl into providing safe haven for Joe at the L.A. facility. The transition is not without discomfort, but everything is aggravated via a conspiracy of poachers to get Joe into their own greedy hands. Director Ron Underwood (City Slickers) uses a combination of special-effects techniques to give Joe life and personality, and he succeeds quite effectively. The requisite giant-ape-goes-amok scenes are all in place--a couple of them pretty intense--as is a conclusion that finds the simian hero performing a stunning feat of escalation. Underwood attempts to give a little modern spin to some classic Hollywood conventions regarding wild hearts lost in civilization, and the results are pretty agreeable family fare. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Joe Young.......2007-05-09

this is an absolute good movie, some thrills and chills but nothing beats the heartwarming connection between the girl and the gorilla.

4 out of 5 stars Not anything to go ape over........2007-05-07

Believe it or not the only reason I bought Mighty Joe Young
was to see a cameo scene with Ray Harryhaussen in it and Terry
Moore, who played husband and wife. Who are they? Well Miss Moore
was the original lead in the 1949 Mighty Joe Young B&W version and
Ray Harryhaussen was the assistant to Willis O'Brien in the special
effects department....and went on to do his own astounding FX in 7th Voyage of Sinbad and Earth vs The Flying Saucers and many many more.
Now as far as the new version of MJY...it seemed to stick to the
original quite well...even to the scene where Joe saves the child.
Definitely Disneyfied, but nothing surprising as far as plot. I admit
the special effects did impress me, especially when was in the
streets confronting humanity. This would probably be a great addition
for youngsters who believe in a bond between humans and monkeys.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT REMAKE BETTER THAN THE ORIGINAL.......2007-03-25

I am a huge Harryhausen fan and an old monster movie lover! So it is hard for me to say that they did a great job on this remake! The effects are incredible and Charlize Theron in perfectly cast(and she's HOT!) The DVD transfer is very good and there are some interesting extras. One of the best remakes ever!

4 out of 5 stars LifeTimer... does what it says.......2007-01-09

Great program, just wish that when you create a new one, that it would start off blank, to make it easier to enter the date.... But all in all,it does do what it says, and I really have no need for many timers.

4 out of 5 stars A Mighty Remake.......2006-12-09

While the old classic is just that, a classic, this remake is far superior in every way. Theron is both stunning and a talented Oscar winner for "Monster." Bill Paxton is believable as always and so is the cast of familar faces. This is fun for the whole family with only some mild profanity and violence (I wouldn't let my youngest child see the needlessly graphic "electrocution" scene of the villian in the end). The special effects are the kind that will hold up over time and make this worth watching over and over again. My family loves this film; it has excellent repeat value.

He may only come up to King Kong's shin, but Joe makes up in heart what he lacks in size. This sweet tale of a girl and her pet/best friend, an African gorilla with the soul of a kitten, pulls on a different set of heartstrings than the giant ape classic. Robert Armstrong practically repeats his role from King Kong as a Broadway producer who lures Jill Young (Terry Moore) and Joe, an ape she raised from baby (a splendidly realized stop-motion character created by Willis O'Brien, the creator behind Kong), to New York as the star attraction at his new nightclub. Caged in a cramped basement holding cell, the unhappy Joe finally goes berserk after a trio of drunks ply him with alcohol, and the city rules him a menace. In a desperate attempt to save Joe from execution, Jill rounds up her friends and confidants (including beefy love interest Ben Johnson) for a jailbreak. This human-scale drama is more subdued than its inspiration, but the nightclub rampage remains a terrifying scene in its mad destruction; and the climax, involving a raging fire at an orphanage (have these filmmakers no shame?!), still impresses. --Sean Axmaker

Description

A slick nightclub owner (King Kong veteran Robert Armstrong) discovers the giant ape frolicking in Africa as the beloved pet of a young girl (Terry Moore). He brings both to Hollywood as a floor-show sensation, until some no-goods ply Joe with booze and the blitzed behemoth goes bonkers. Highlights such as Armstrong's henchmen trying to lasso Joe cowpoke style, Joe playing tug-of-war with musclemen and plenty of Joe-to-the-rescue action make Mighty Joe Young mighty fine entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars Striking! Startling! Staggering!.......2007-03-22

PLOT: The film begins in Africa in the late 1930s. The film focuses on a little girl named Jill Young, who lives in Africa with her father who is an American explorer. One day, two natives walk past Jill's house with a straw basket. Jill asks if she can see what is inside. To her amazement, it is an adorable baby gorilla. Jill gathers up some of her belongings, as well as her father's big flashlight, and uses them to buy the gorilla. She names the gorilla "Joe". Jills father later comes home and sees that his flashlight is gone. When he finds out that Jill used it to buy a baby gorilla, he immediately says that there is no way that she can have it. Soon enough, Jill's father begins to fall in love with Joe the same way she has, but he reminds her that they can't keep him forever. Some day Joe will grow into a large, ferocious gorilla. The film then jumps to New York City in 1949. A nightclub owner named Max O'Hara (King Kong veteran Robert Armstrong) is looking for a new theme for his club, and he is certain that he will find it in Africa. O'Hara journies to Africa with a team of cowboys led by Gregg Johnson (Ben Johnson) to capture some animals for the nightclub. The group of men are stunned to find Joe, who has miraculously grown into a ten-foot-tall gorilla. Jill (Terry Moore) is now a full-grown women and she rescues Joe from the men, who nearly shot him. She shows them that while Joe may look ferocious, he is very sweet and gentle. O'Hara knows that Joe is the perfect act for his nightclub, and he pleads with Jill to sign a contract. Eventually she agrees and she and Joe go to New York. Joe, billed as Mr. Joseph Young, is a huge smash with the public, but eventually several weeks go by and Jill is uncertain if the act will ever end. Is it possible that Joe can become a danger to others as well as himself?

COMMENTS: While not an official King Kong film, this RKO produced film is often considered one because it was created by many of the same people who created King Kong (1933). The film isn't exactly a horror film, but it does feature some of the best monster special effects ever seen on the screen. The story was conceived by Merian C. Cooper, who also wrote King Kong. Stop-motion master Willis O'Brien once again was hired to create the astonishing visuals, but by now they had been perfected a little bit more. Joe was created from a fifteen-inch tall armature puppet. A new type of hair was put on him so that the animator's fingerprints weren't visibile, as seen in King Kong and Son of Kong (1933). Because of time constraints, O'Brien was unable to do any of the actual animation himself. Most of the animation was done by his new protege, Ray Harryhausen. Harryhausen saw King Kong when he was 13 years old, and he wanted to be a stop-motion animator ever since. He eventually tracked down O'Brien and convinced him to take him in as his apprentice. Harryhausen made Joe move and behave more like a real gorilla, unlike the cartoonish behavior of Kiko in Son of Kong. He later went on to do some of the amazing stop-motion seen in films such as The 7th Voyage of Sinbad (1958) and One Million Years B.C. (1966). Ultimately, Mighty Joe Young was succussful but not successful enough to earn back the $2.5 million it cost to produce the film. A planned sequel, Trazan Meets Joe Young, was cancelled. Willis O'Brien later received an Oscar for his work on the film--the only one he ever received. In 1998, Walt Disney Pictures remade the film. Joe was now created by special make-up effects master Rick Baker, who also created the King Kong suit in the 1976 remake of King Kong. Baker created Joe through the use of a man-sized costume, two full-scale animatronic puppets, and CGI. The storyline, however, was radically changed from the original. The remake featured cameos by Terry Moore and Ray Harryhausen. This DVD features the film in its original fullscreen presentation. It also features the theatrical trailer, two featurettes with Ray Harryhausen, and Commentary by Ray Harryhausen, Terry Moore, and Ken Ralston.

4 out of 5 stars King Kong without the sad ending.......2007-02-11

This could also be titled, "A tale of four giant monkey movies", since MJY and KK were both given remakes in recent years (for this review, I'll ignore the unfortunate 1976 KK remake). The plots for each is, by now, pretty much familiar to most people, although MJY has been overshadowed by KK. This is a pity. Growing up, I always loved this film. I liked the original KK, too, but always thought it took itself just a little too seriously. Also, as a child, I really didn't like that Kong was killed at the end. Kids don't really appreciate tragedy.

MJY has the heart and humor that KK lacked. Some would complain about maudlin sentimentality, and it does require a certain innocence to appreciate it. I was fortunate enough to first see it at an age when I still had that innocence. I'm not ashamed to admit that I can still see it that way after all these years. Disney remade MJY in 1998, but some of the innocence and charm were lost in translation. The '98 version was a very forgettable film and an unworthy successor to the original.

Comparisons to KK as well as the '98 remake are inevitable though, so let's address them (WARNING: some spoilers ahead)...

KK is pretty much a straightforward action film with interludes of unconvincing romance. The acting in KK is really quite awful. (Although Robert Armstrong plays pretty much the same part in MJY that he played in KK, he does it better in MJY.) But then, all of the human actors in KK are pretty wooden, and not helped all that well by the script. (Peter Jackson's KK remake is excellent, crippled only by the poor choice of Jack Black to play the Carl Denham character.)

By comparison, MJY also blends action and romance, but adds some notes of humor and sentiment. All of these have held up well over the years. One of the big differences between the original and the '98 remake is that the original seems more genuine in context. The original is really good storytelling, but the remake seems built on the same plot framework, but designed to appeal to focus group audiences. The acting in MJY is still inferior to the remake, but that's not enough to detract from the charm of the story. Peter Jackson obviously had some of the same feelings about the two that I did since he added some moments of lightness and sentiment to his KK remake that the original lacked.

KK's great weakness is that its "moral" is hopelessly naive from a modern perspective. "Beauty killed the beast" is not only corny, it ignores that what really killed Kong was human greed and meddling with the natural world. Both KK remakes have picked up on this. By contrast, MJY is a "fish out of water" movie where both Joe and Jill are seduced by a society they're too innocent to understand. As great storytelling, you root for them to be able to go home, and the story obliges in the end. Unlike KK, the moral of MJY is every bit as relevant today as the day it was made.

One weakness of the MJY plot is that Joe is, essentially, Jill's pet. Although this enhances the charm of the story, it detracts from its message about nature. No, Joe isn't a house pet, but he's still clearly domesticated. That Kong is just as clearly a wild animal enhances the sense of dread in KK's action sequences. KK turns that relationship on its ear, the making Ann Darrow character Kong's pet. One major difference between the original KK and Peter Jackson's remake is that the original suggested that the relationship between Kong and Ann was sexual on some level. The remake depicted Kong as a lonely creature and his pet human as a welcome companion.

I have to make one final observation, unrelated to reviews of any of these films... I find it fascinating to see the effect that these giant monkey movies had on the careers of their female leads. Without KK, no one today would be likely to remember Fay Wray. Alone among these actresses, Terry Moore was most likely to have been remembered, but more for her relationship with Howard Hughes than her work in MJY. The '76 KK remake launched the career of Jessica Lange just as the MJY remake launched the career of Charlize Theron. It will be interesting to see how Naomi Watts' career progresses after the latest KK remake.

4 out of 5 stars if only fay & kong could have found this kind of happiness ..........2006-10-06

willis o'brien returned to apedom for this lovely movie, and he brought young protege ray harryhausen along. after the horrors of "kong" many years before, this film is played as much for humor as for frights, and it shows in its happy ending. i remember having watched this one 14 times in one week on new york citys old "million dollar movie" 40+ years ago, and ive never grown tired of it.

5 out of 5 stars 5 STARS FOR ORIGINAL KONG.......2006-09-20

Finally available in a beautiful restored and remastered transfer from the best available elements, KING KONG, the single most requested title for DVD, is part of three title THE KING KONG COLLECTION). Besides the two-disc King Kong, there's Son of Kong and Mighty Joe Young.

Kong co-writer/producer/director Merian C. Cooper's real life was a blue print for fictional big ape filmmaker Carl Denham. One of the features on the superb two-disc King Kong is a new TCM documentary on the legendary Kong creator Cooper. Adventurer, war hero, explorer, pilot, filmmaker and cinema-innovator, the daring and honorable Cooper survived multiple wartime plane crashes, was declared dead on two occasions and even pulled off a daring escape after being held prisoner for ten months in a Russian POW camp.

The other great extra is a new, extraordinary seven-part, two hour and 40 minute documentary on the making of Kong.

However you look at it, King Kong must be included among the most influential of American films.

This beautifully executed original tale is a monster movie, a fantasy, an adventure, a love story, a tragedy and an unparalleled thriller. Loaded with striking imagery, the innovative 1933 effects still have power to suspend disbelief. The film, packed with meaning, is religious, mythological, Jungian and insanely Freudian.

The restored print has the look of a fine Doré engraving. King Kong is a must have and perfect appetizer for Peter Jackson's overwrought, but stunning remake.

How can you go wrong buying all 3 great ape classics in one set? Anyone buying this set pretty much knows or has seen the movies but is looking for a nice nostalgia trip. This is it! The special features are great. Alot of info on how everything was animated and good shots of the actual models as well. This set also includes a great documentary of Merian C. Cooper and his visions. Highly recommended for a fan of the classics.

This collection is a must have. It was great to enjoy the classics again and to share them with my children.

5 out of 5 stars Kong alive and well.......2006-02-22

It's amazing how well this film has held up for over 70 years. The special effects although not as flashy as todays were very good. Just the right mix of horror and humor. Film makers today should watch and learn. Same kudos for Mr. Joseph Young.

5 out of 5 stars Going ape swings........2006-02-21

The combo ape set arrived in fine shape and in a reasonable time frame. Lots of fun with the monkeys.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Collection.......2007-04-01

Well, this is my 100th review and with my dad's recent passing I thought I would do this one in his honor as these were among his favorite films and whenever they would air on WWOR Channel 9's Million Dollar Movie in New York City where I grew up we would all gather as a family and watch these timeless films. I gave this collection 5 stars as it is worth owning all of them, but each film deserves individual treatment, so here goes:

King Kong (1933) *****: This film still holds up after all these many years. Sure the effects and acting are dated, but they are still very watchable. The film is touching and tragic, but also ruthless and violent. The cleaned up, restored version of this film is rarely shown on network television as it includes some rather violent scenes that were edited out in the theatres because the producers were worried about the violent images and that they may make Kong less sympathetic. For instance, there is a close-up scene of him literally chewing on a native that is surprisingly graphic for 1933 and there is an equally graphic scene in which he is stomping to death numerous natives into the ground. All of these are very believable moments in the film, but I find that they don't make Kong any less sympathetic, but rather clearly show his animalistic side which is believable and acceptable. The new Kong by Peter Jackson also made sure that we see this side of Kong. After all, Kong is an animal, but beauty soothes the savage beast in him, albeit, briefly.

Son of Kong (1933) ***1/2: This film was very hastily made after the success of King Kong, but it is nevertheless impressive. In fact, the final scene of the island being destroyed contains effects that are better than the original film itself. However, the film falls short because the script is faulty. The film is saved by the wonderful effects of Kong's son who is just so adorable and his relationship to the man responsible for his father's demise. It's actually a clever little follow up the the epic of its parent film (pun intended).

Mighty Joe Young (1949) ****: This was a beautifully made film with effects that surpassed any of the Kong films before it. The story is not unlike the other Kong stories in that a gigantic ape is caught and sold to a kind of circus act, however, the ape is already domesticated and has a loyal female owner who will stop at nothing to get "Joe" back were he belongs. The scene in which Joe saves children at a burning orphanage is breathtaking and heartbreaking even by today's standards. FYI: The recent Disney remake with the ever reliable Bill Paxton and the Academy Award Winning Charlize Theron is terrific and worth a renting if not purchase.

5 out of 5 stars IT TOOK A WHILE BUT THEY DID IT RIGHT! .......2007-03-08

I am a huge fan of stop motion effects and what better example than King Kong! This is one of my favorite movies of all time and the DVD is nothing short of spectacular! Not being old enough to have seen this at the movies I watched this on my 10 foot home theater screen and was amazed how clear this print is! They went the extra mile on the bonus features too! I bought the box set which includes the original Mighty Joe Young and Son of Kong. You get the same 2 disc special edition of King Kong and two other classic stop motion films!

5 out of 5 stars One of the finest horror boxsets available.......2007-03-02

This is a must have collection. Here are my thoughts on the films:

King Kong, 5 stars, very original and a whole lot of fun.

The Son of Kong, 4 stars, not very original, but fun.

Mighty Joe Young, 5 stars, a little more original than "The Son of Kong.

There you have it, three great movies and hours of great extras.
