One of the most absurdly violent films ever made, this outrageous comic book of a movie is short on style but makes up for it in sheer audacity and excess. Brooding street kid Ricky Ho (Fan Siu Wang, playing the part of avenging angel with self-righteous earnestness) walks into the corrupt corporate prison system with superpowered martial arts skills and proceeds to punch his way through every bullying thug and sadistic guard who comes his way. Literally. His fist puts a gaping hole through the stomach of a giant sumo-wrestler-sized thug and the jaw of a pompadoured bully, and turns the skull of a pathetic guard into a bloody stump. As Ricky becomes a hero to the downtrodden prisoners, the assistant warden (who keeps breath mints in his removable glass eye) organizes the dreaded "gang of four," the cell block gang leaders, to take Ricky down. Fat chance!

There's nothing realistic about the bone-shattering, blood-splattering spectacle of crushed heads and snapped limbs, but the unrestrained display becomes so preposterously grotesque it hardly matters. You'll be convinced that the "Oh" in Riki-Oh stands for "Oh my God, did I really see that?" Yes, Ricky really does tie a sliced tendon with his teeth, a thug cuts open his gut and uses his own intestines to strangle Ricky, and the warden (for no apparent reason) puffs himself up into a giant rubber ogre. Ricky's curvy, feminine nemesis Rogan is played by Yukari Oshima, the butt-kicking, all-woman star of Angel and others. --Sean Axmaker
Description
When mild-mannered Ricky takes revenge on the drug pushing thugs who killed his girlfriend, he is sentenced to a maximum security prison. Within these walls lies a penitentiary like no other, run by a host of evil characters. A sadistic warden, his sniveling assistant, and the powerful Gang of Four all control the inmates through terror and brutal death!

4 out of 5 stars I still don't know for sure if I watched this movie or if it was a really scary dream.......2007-06-03

Fan Siu Wong stars as Ricky Ho, a young man with superhuman strength. The movie starts out showing his first day in jail. Since Ricky doesn't take nothin from nobody, he is not liked by the tough guys and they decide to kill him. Ricky's special move is punching through people's body. Most of the movie is spent showing Ricky using this special move. In one scene Ricky punches a guy in his throat and his hand goes through the mouth while he rips the jaw off. That isn't even the highlight. Ricky also has to chew razor blades and gets strangled by intestines. There are no female characters except for 1. We get brief glimpses of Ricky's girlfriend to show why he went to jail. Yukari Oshima plays a man for some reason, but she is good in her role.

The story is not memorable, but the gore has a lot of detail put into it. There are not any martial arts fights, but the bloody fun makes for one heck of a viewing experience. I could have used 1 really good fight. Fan Siu Wong is truly on another level. He is like a mix between Bruce Lee and Yuen Biao. Awesoem fist forms, great kicks, and he is ripped out of of his mind. His long hair and young face makes him perfect for a Japanese magna character, but the focus of the movie is on the extreme violence, not on martial arts action or anything else. Only recommended to those who like extremely campy gore.

3.5/5

Tokyo Shock DVD has good picture quality and good 5.1 English, Cantonese and Mandarin tracks. The English dub is well done, and the Cantonese is easier on the ears, but the English dub is a much better translation than the English subtitles.

Look for Dragon Dynasty to release this in the next year or so.

5 out of 5 stars wow.......2007-05-26

Hahaha this movie is hilarious. "Camp" does not do it justice. Describing scenes from it does not do it justice either, although the bit where a guy commits ritual suicide by slicing open his own gut, and then in a surprise move grabbing his own intestines and trying to strangle Riki with them is my personal favorite. Oh, also the scene with the meat grinder. And the random dog mutilation.

What you really need to know is that the box advertises the movie this way: "Includes the hilarious exploding head scene as seen in Comedy Central's The Daily Show!" That is ON THE BOX.

And really, when you've seen this movie, you won't even remember the exploding head, because so many styrofoam limbs, craniums, and other body parts have been mushed into ketchup pulp that such events--memorable in other movies--are naught but a drop in the bucket. No grindhouse b-movie has anything on this bloodbath, either in gore or in the low-quality special effects of said gore.

Other quality features of Riki-Oh! include hilarious and randomly timed flashbacks to Riki's girlfriend, who we find out was murdered by drug lords when she catches them in the act of doing drug-related things ("murdered" is relative, here: fleeing, she runs straight off a fifth-story balcony.): hilarious and randomly timed flashbacks to how Riki learned martial arts in one day. I'm not kidding. One. Day.: hilarious dubbing: hilarious "subtle" political metaphors, like how private prisons are corrupt and run by the "gang of four": hilarious... you get the idea. You need to see this movie.

Also I should mention that there's this other movie called "Fortress" which was made a few years later and is basically the same movie except with Americans, cyborgs, overt Christian metaphors, and 1000 times worse. This is the classic. Long live Riki-oh.

5 out of 5 stars Rosebud my arse!.......2007-04-21

Citizen Kane ain't got nothin on this masterpiece...

Many years ago, at a family function, my cousin handed me a VHS tape with no markings and told me to watch it. The movie was a dub of a dub and the picture and sound quality was far below average. It didn't matter. Through the haze of worn tape I knew I was witnessing film history. I knew I was going to have a sure fire way to make friends when I got to college. Put this movie on in the dorms during your first week at school and you will find out who is worth your time and forever be known as "the guy that showed us Story of Ricky".

No other movie gets a reaction out of people like this. That is what its about. You put it on and watch peoples' aprehensive faces turn to pure joy as they watch criminals heads get exploded and bodies disembowled in the most gloriously cheesy ways imaginable. People discover deep guttoral laughs that they didn't know they had when someone unexpectedly... well.. you'll see. Let's just say, if your a dog lover you may want a barf bag.

This should be the headliner to any "Bad Movie Night". It will cause roaring laughter and popcorn to be thrown and possibley vomiting. It will cause hours of conversation afterwards of trying to explain what the hell the filmakers were thinking. It will also make for awkward moments when you try to describe it to someone who's never seen it.

Like I said, Citizen Kane got nothin' on Ricky Oh. Just see what kind of reaction you get if you put on CK at a party as opposed to Ricky. You may just get your head punched off.

5 out of 5 stars Lotsa gore and unintentionally hilarious.......2003-09-11

The story of Riki is definitely worth a look for those who like gore movies and laughing at bad horror/kung-fu films. The movie is a non-stop plethura of violence, gore; including severed limbs, squirting blood, exposed brains and intestinal fun; and hilarious lapses in logic such as where do they keep getting these giant polearms, wood planers and spiked boards? and how can they pull these things out of their clothes when soaking wet they obviously have nothing under their clothes? Basically this movie is splatterific (referring to the unrated version).

5 out of 5 stars Gore, gore, GORE!.......2001-07-18

Well now, some of you have seen a clip from this movie on Comedy Centrals "The Daily Show" when Killborn hosted, the clip of the guy getting his head crushed by another guy. Well, that is from this movie! This Hong Honk beat-em-up is extremely violent and gorey, although the most extreme Gore is pretty fake looking.

If you like Evil Dead flicks, Dead Alive and other campy, very gorey flicks, check this movie out!

4 out of 5 stars the Story of Ricky Review.......2000-08-09

if you want an action flick with a prison setting, this dvd is it! the notable actors include japanese actress yukari oshima! the story plot goes like: ricky is sent to prison in the futuristic 2001 (hey that's next year!) and which is operated by private companies. ricky portrays the "good" prisoner and becomes the role-model for other prisoners...in short..he comes out of the prison alive..but all the scenes in-between will leave you hanging onto your seat! pretty graphic but well choreographed stuff..not intensely full of gore..but leaves you hanging for more..
