It's got a round table, some knights, and a noble warrior who rises to become King Arthur, but everything else about this revisionist legend is pure Hollywood. That's not such a bad thing if you enjoyed Rob Roy, Braveheart, Gladiator, and Troy, and there's some intriguing potential in presenting the "real" Arthur (played by Clive Owen) as a 5th-century soldier of Rome, assigned to defend Roman-imperial England against a hoard of invading Saxons (led by Stellan SkarsgÄrd in hairy villain mode). As revamped history and "archaeological findings" would have us believe, Guinevere (Keira Knightley) is a warrior babe in face-paint and Lancelot (Ioan Gruffudd) is a nonentity who fades into the woodwork. Never mind! Best to enjoy the harsh, gloomy atmosphere of Irish locations, the ruggedness of Owen and his hearty supporting cast, and the entertaining nonsense of a Jerry Bruckheimer production that strips battle-ready Guinevere down to leather-strap S&M gear while all the men sport full-body armor. Hail to the queen, indeed! --Jeff Shannon

The wartime memories of surviving World War II bomber squadrons were still crystal clear when this acclaimed drama was released in 1949--one of the first postwar films out of Hollywood to treat the war on emotionally complex terms. Framed by a postwar prologue and epilogue and told as a flashback appreciation of wartime valor and teamwork, the film stars Gregory Peck in one of his finest performances as a callous general who assumes command of a bomber squadron based in England. At first, the new commander has little rapport with the 918th Bomber Group, whose loyalties still belong with their previous commander. As they continue to fly dangerous missions over Germany, however, the group and their new leader develop mutual respect and admiration, until the once-alienated commander feels that his men are part of a family--men whose bravery transcends the rigors of rigid discipline and by-the-book leadership. The film's now-classic climax, in which the general waits patiently for his squad to return to base--painfully aware that they may not return at all--is one of the most subtle yet emotionally intense scenes of any World War II drama. With Peck in the lead and Dean Jagger doing Oscar-winning work in a crucial supporting role, this was one of veteran director Henry King's proudest achievements, and it still packs a strong dramatic punch. --Jeff Shannon
Description
This gritty World War II action drama staring Gregory Peck, Oscar winner Dean Jagger, Hugh Marlowe, Gary Merrill and Millard Mitchell is seen as one of the most realistic portrayals of the heroics and perils of war. Convinced an air force commander (Gary Merrill) is at the breaking point, Brigadier General Savage (Peck) takes over his struggling bomber group. Kind and understanding, he adopts a crushing discipline to revitalize the demoralized troop. At first resentful and rebellious, the flyers gradually change as Savage guides them to amazing feats. But the stress of command soon takes it's toll and the weary general reaches his own breaking point.

Special Edition Review--Much Better than Just the Movie.......2007-07-01
The 2007 special edition of Twelve O'Clock High is just what any fan of the original movie would desire. First, you have the original movie, one of the greatest Hollywood films ever made and certainly the greatest WWII film ever made. Second, you have on the same disc a voice-over narration option giving facts about each scene by commentators. The second disc contains a retrospective on the making of the film, a profile on the man who was the model for Gen. Savage, a profile on the US home front, a profile on bomber crewmen in WWII, movie stills, news articles, and more. As a big fan of this film, the new edition is a treasure and renders my older version entirely obsolete.
Great Drama.......2007-06-19
This is the fictionalized account of the 306th Bomb Group (movie use fictionalized name 918th BG). Movie effectively blends WWII vintage air to air combat footage and with post WWII movie produced footage for some pretty effective drama. In 1949, they only had 12 B17 bombers for this movie on loan from USAF. This special edition has extra disc with historical commentators as well interviews. Pretty interesting stuff. The movie is not widescreen. The SE has an extra disc, the old version does not have this supplemental material. It still a first rate story, but without widescreen, it is short of 5 stars since I will probably on sit and watch disc 2 only once or twice.
Classic B-17 Flight Flick.......2007-05-26
Viewing this movie was a requirement for a class about Leadership, while I was attending US Air Force flight training. It contrasts a couple of types of leadership, and has some of the best actual flying scenes of B-17's in WW2 European bombing mission. A must see for anyone into WW2 history, or just an aviation buff. Superb acting by all, but particularly by Gregory Peck and Dean Jagger.
Twelve O'Clock High.......2007-05-14
In my opinion this movie is an all-time classic. It gives you a gut feel for the radical paradigm-shift that the life or death struggle of all-out war forces people to undego. What was once important in peace time civilian life disappears completely. And the changes in focus, thinking, priorities and agenda that participants in the conflict are forced to make force viewers to realize how much gratitude and honor we owe to our past and present military veterans. Their heroic dedication and the sacrifices they made, and continue to make for the rest of us, are incalculable.
Outstanding study in leadership..........2007-05-13
This film was used in the 1980s at Leadership, Management, Education and Training School (LMET) as their final exam. We watched the movie and it was paused after certain scenes. We would then have to describe the leadership style used, whether it was effective or not, and why. I had seen this movie several times before but I now gained a new respect and understanding for this movie. The use of black and white film allowed the use of actual gun camera footage from the 8th Army Air Force and Luftwaffe archives.

Give it a chance you just might like it.......2007-06-27
If you like movies produced by Jerry Bruckhiemer you should enjoy this movie. I found it a very entertaining telling of King Arthur and his knights. There are no shockers just a good blockbuster. Clive Owen does a good job as do the other Knights in the movie. In fact the other knights make the movie more enjoyable and don't forget about Keira Knightley in 1080p!
The movie looks great on blu-ray some scenes are a little soft but if you watch the sd-dvd you will see the same thing. The sound was good, though I can only comment on the DD 5.1. I am sure the uncompressed track is even better.
Don't go nuts picking it apart just pop some popcorn and enjoy, thats the point of movies after all.
King Arthur.......2007-06-24
Nice movie. Not one of the best out there but I definitely did enjoy this. A somewhat more realistic view to the tale of King Arthur and his legend. It's predictable but the actor / actress were entertaining. Nice picture and sound on a plasma TV.
King Arthur comes to Life!!.......2007-05-13
The Director's Cut of King Arthur on Blu-Ray disc has needle sharp video and a bursting soundtrack. The image is a bit on the dark side but this renders a superb color saturation througout the film. A real exciting story about my favorite legend, to be enjoyed even more in 1080p.
King Arthur - Extended Director's Cut [Blu-ray]
Very good take on the Arthur legend........2007-05-12
Having Clive Owen as Arthur was an excellent choice. Taking the Arthur story in a new direction was interesting. There have already been many books and movies that detailed Arthur , Merlin and the whole crew. This movie takes Arthur and brings him back to the Earth as more of a soldier and leader of a group of men. I enjoyed the cast and new direction. The Blu-Ray disc looks very good and has an excellent audio track.King Arthur - Extended Director's Cut [Blu-ray]Mary Stewart's Merlin TrilogyKnights of the Round TableThe Mists of AvalonFirst KnightExcalibur (The Arthur Books #3)Excalibur [HD DVD]

...And it's a very well done movie. Great acting by the entire cast, massive sets and intricate costume designs, epic bloody battles ala Braveheart. It's all here. I really don't understand the backlash this movie has received, and it mostly seems to stem from the King Arthur hardcores who are trying to compare this to the original story. It's not the original story, and I think the director makes that very clear. So please stop trying to rip the movie apart and compare apples to oranges. Take it for what it's worth, a fantasy movie loosely based off the King Arthur name & legend, nothing more, nothing less, but done VERY WELL with high production values all around. King arthur deserves to be right aside your other medeval/fantasy movie epics: Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven, Lord of the Rings, and Gladiator. If you are a fan of "the genre" and not "the facts", do yourself a favor and get this movie ASAP. And yes the Blu-Ray version looks FANTASTIC - jaw dropping on my Bravia 46". $19.99 and well worth every cent!!!

During a downturn in his career, Al Pacino starred in this unfortunate comedy about a guy coping with a new romance, a house full of kids, and a new play--and doing a bad job of it. Pacino is a playwright who is convinced that he's about to have his first stage success. As opening night approaches, his wife bolts from the marriage, abandoning him with five kids (only one of whom is his). While he tries to juggle rewrites and a potential entanglement with a flighty actress and a demanding producer and director, he also has to solve his baby-sitting woes. Talk about trying to do it all. If only the material was as funny as Pacino, who may have made this film out of allegiance to its writer, Israel Horovitz, whose play The Indian Wants the Bronx gave Pacino one of his breakthrough roles in the early 1960s. --Marshall Fine
Description
Life is getting complicated for Broadway playwright Ivan Travalian (Pacino). His flaky wife Gloria (Weld) is moving in with her lover, his director hates his new play and his leading lady (Cannon) is a terrified movie star who's never been on the stage. With five children to look after (most of them Gloria's), a budding romance with his leading lady, and a producer (King) demanding a rewrite, it's no wonder the emotionally and financially unstable Ivan starts to exhibit all kinds of irrational behavior.

a disappointing wait.......2007-06-28
I have waited for years for this movie to make it to DVD, only to be SO DISAPPOINTED with the treatment it recieved!! Not only is this a very good Al Pacino movie, but it is a very good movie period, so why when it is turned out on to DVD is it treated like a stepchild at a family reunion with the final scene left on the cutting room floor. I thought that the idea of DVD was to give the audiance what couldnt be give given on a 2 hour VHS tape, and the scene that was cut was one of the best in the film...when the kids bring him 'back down to earth' after the has spent his first day as a hit playwrite in bed. Guess I'm back to waiting for the 'soon to be released' Collector's or Deluxe Edition of this movie.
A VERY GOOD PACINO FILM!.......2007-06-25
This is a very good movie. Pacino is so likable as a Broadway playwright who takes on the responsibility of being father for his son and various other children that his ex- wife drops off from time to time. A insightful comedy that is not that well know, but well worth your time.
Good film but..............Don't be fooled.......2006-07-29
Well I love this film........................the video version........There is a problem with the dvd version and the version that has been shown on TV.......................It's missing the last scene..........If anyone has seen this film they will remeber after Ivan and the kids leave the resturant and read the review in the NY Times. The next scene is him in the waking up the next morning in bed and the kids are crowded around him with more reviews from newspapers and hitting him with a cake. Well that scene in cut from the dvd/tv showings. It ends when they read the NY Times review when they leave the resturant...........What A jip.............Now it's finally going to be relesed here in the US. I don't know if I'm going to get it. After seeing the import version. Also............the beginning credits is supposed to have the NY skyline as it's backdrop...................................No t here either.....................So I'm sticking with the original VHS version.........
More entertaining that critics would have you think.......2006-02-14
Does this film seem dated? Sure. But it's very enjoyable to watch. Pacino, Alan King, and Dyan Cannon are obviously having good fun with their roles. Pacino channels a little Woody Allen as Armenian playwright Ivan Travalian (at one point he quips "you can always tell an Armenian; their last name rhymes with Armenian") with a mid-life crisis, a failing marriage, a new play to finish, and a stable full of kids (mostly from his soon-to-be-ex-wife's previous couplings) all with their own distinct personalities and issues. It makes a pretty nice comedy-drama jambalaya that doesn't hit any high marks, but is entertaining nonetheless. Look for delightful cameo roles by Bob and Ray as brothers investing in Travalian's play. Also worth noting is a young Eric Gurry who plays Pacino's oldest son and sometimes his father's caretaker. Apparently Gurry left films to become involved in the venture capital industry but this film shows he had some promise as an actor.
Another Pacino part to be taken away by..........2006-02-07
This is a sweet, heart-strong film, and features a terrific performance from Al Pacino. Made a couple years after Kramer Vs. Kramer, it is similar in placing a loving father in the predicament of fighting for their children when his wife decides to leave them. Though this isn't about divorce, rather about the charm, pleasure and pressure of parenthood and a professional life.
Pacino and the kids are the best part, while the two women, his wife Gloria-mother to four of the five kids, sired by three different men, prior to Pacino's Ivan, and Alice Detroit-famous actress starring in his new Broadway play, have flimsier, partial characters to work with. Particularly Gloria, played by Tuesday Weld, is a heartless and troubled woman, but the film expresses her need to abandon men and children as her just "being who she is." This statement is made after Ivan tracks her down to bring her home to her kids, who could use a mother, during a good scene where it is brought home just who she is and what she is capable of. Still, it certifies her as a villain of less-than-justified-motivation. Alice Detroit, played by Dyan Cannon, is sweet and nice, swiftly starting an affair with Ivan, then just as swiftly moving in with him and the kids, but her part is ancillary too. The kids, particularly Igor, Ivan's only natural child, and Geraldo, the one kid who stays with him when the others return to their blood fathers, are terrific. The films scene with Ivan and the two boys is at it's best. Ivan is an orphan and his desire to raise and care for the kids is beautiful, an aspect of Pacino's character that hasn't been seen in a while.
Written by playwright Israel Horovitz, this is a good theatre-themed film too. As a writer struggling domestically and professionally it is fun and believable.
The music seemed oddly similar to "Tootsie" too. Anyway...
It seems like Pacino doesn't do this kind of work anymore. Like DeNiro in Stanley & Iris and Falling in Love, Gene Hackman in Twice in a Lifetime, Dustin Hoffman in Kramer Vs. Kramer, etc. The middle class/working class domestic drama/comedy. He is truly excellent in the part, which is low-key, true and sweet.

Good Story Idea - Bad execution (acting).......2007-07-03
Good story idea. Good FX. Great supporting cast. Suspect acting by main actors. Clive is forcing the part. Keira is strictly eye-candy and the guy who played the lead Saxon was awful. If you go into the movie with that in mind you'll enjoy it. Soundtrack gets 4 stars.
The Quintessential King Arthur.......2007-06-28
This movie delivers what I always wanted from other film versions of King Arthur, the idealist's story. The nemesis of idealism is betrayal and that is the story here. Love, which replaces "Merlin's Magic" in this film is of the sort that comes from living for a greater good and practicing selflessness, not a romantic affair with Guinevere. Fuqua captured the grace and growing depth of Arthur's journey beautifully.
As someone who avoids action movies, I found the battle depictions to be as essential to the story as any of the dialogue. They were not gore-fests but smart battle scenes that gave us a glimpse of the brutality of the times and the unique characters involved.
Antoine Fugua made a beautiful movie and Clive Owen was the perfect thoughtful Arthur. In fact the entire cast was great.
The Director's Cut IMHO is the better version.
Long Live The King.......2007-06-08
this movie is pretty good. it has some very good battle scenes in it. this movie is about the story of the untold story of king Arturs life. if you watch the movie you'll understand on what i'm talking about. it's a very good movie.
Interesting take on the history of ancient Britain, undone by poor casting choices and bad dialogue.......2007-06-08
The movie aspires to be a re-telling of one of the many possible origins for the King Arthur legend. I give it two stars for this effort. The role of the Roman Empire in Britain is one that is rarely visited by Hollywood, even though the influence of the Romans on English culture lives on today.
"King Arthur" is a mildly entertaining movie, but highly flawed. Lots of reviews have commented on the historical flaws, but I'll give the movie a pass on this one. The legend of King Arthur has such murky origins that nobody could possibly mistake this movie for a historical documentary.
The biggest problem with this movie, IMHO, is the casting. The movie employs lots of actors who have done fine work elsewhere, but they just don't fit the characters that they play in this movie. Let's go through the list:
Clive Owen - with his tired and raspy voice, cynical but earnest attitude, droopy eyelids, and sad hound-dog look, Clive Owen has NOIR written all over his face. His looks and style most closely resemble Humphrey Bogart and he was perfect for his anti-hero roles in "Sin City" and "Inside Man". But as King Arthur? Throughout this movie, I could never see in him the power, the grace, nor the machismo that could inspire a legend that would pass down through the centuries. King Arthur was a role that someone of the stature of Russell Crowe would have handled easily, but he must have been beyond the budget of this movie.
Keira Knightly - it is really weird how a semi-savage Woad/Pict princess can enunciate so clearly in grammar school perfect Received Pronunciation English. I can hear every consonant in every word that Keira Knightly speaks! Yes, Keira is somewhat pretty, but her teeth are huge, she has an underbite, her features are too sharp, and her mannerisms too much that of a modern day spoiled, proper suburban English princess for her to be believable as Guinevere, whether played as a Woad/Pict of ancient Britain or as the traditional unfaithful Queen of King Arthur. Keira was perfect for her roles in "Bend it Like Beckham" and "Pirates of the Caribbean", but not as Guinevere.
Ioan Gruffudd - I couldn't figure out why Lancelot was so skinny and wimpy looking and whined so much like a girl until I looked at the credits and realized that this was really Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, hiding behind a hairy black beard, and speaking in perfect R.P. English. 'Nuff said, Ioan was great as the wimpy, nerdy Mr. Fantastic. But, as with King Arthur, you need someone of STATURE to play the role of Lancelot. The young Liam Neeson once played this role perfectly in "Excalibur".
Stellan Skarsgard - this guy actually does have a somewhat funky Swedish lilt to his speech on top of his American accent when he is allowed to speak in complete sentences (e.g., when he appears in the "Making Of" featurette), but, playing the role of a Saxon barbarian chief, he is only given a few choice words to grunt out; only his very modern sounding American accent comes through in these grunts. Since most of Skarsgard's dialogue in this movie is with an actor with a proper German accent (playing the son of the Saxon chief), this mixing and matching of accents is really strange.
Joel Edgerton - the young Uncle Owen Lars from Star Wars! So baby faced, and gentle appearing, definitely not the imperfect, powerful Gawain of legend.
Mads Mikkelsen - this guy has seriously hooded eyelids. He was perfect as the evil Le Chiffre in "Casino Royale". In this movie, hidden behind a heavy black beard, and given few lines to speak, his character Tristan is reduced to a disposable prop, much along the lines of the security guy who always dies in each Star Trek episode. Tristan was not a minor figure in the Arthurian legends, he was a legend with his own story arc and origins.
In summary, this is a rather oddball movie that aspires to greatness, but is undone by poor casting choices and bad dialogue. It did get me interested in learning more of the real history underlying the plot, things such as the Saxon invasion of Britain, the role of Pelagius in the early Christian Church, and the role of the Romans in ancient Britain.
Is this the real King Arthur?.......2007-05-13
Not everyone likes this version of the Arthurian legend. I do. It depicts England towards the end of Roman occupation when Saxon raids terrorize the countryside and the clash of cultures with the Picts still exists. The story of King Arthur has been passed down through the centuries. We may never know if it was true or not and if so exactly what took place. As far as this movie is concerned, the plot is good and the actors hit their mark.

With a clanging of swords, thundering cannons and lots of bravado, TYRONE POWER stars in this swashbuckling classic that won an Oscar for its color cinematography.
Customer Reviews:
Great film, transfer not up to other Fox classics.......2007-05-31
Irresistible hogwash from the golden days of these swashbuckler films. In many ways, more satisfying than "Pirates of the Carribean" since this film is slightly more grounded in a recognizable reality, and is therefore somehow more accessible. The Technicolor photography, which was one of the film's many asstes, receives much attention on this DVD, with Maureen O'Hara's commentary discussing the technique and the film's use of it. But the transfer here isn't up to snuff: some scenes are soft, and the color is subdued and muddy ocassionally. It's not a bad transfer, but certainly not as sharp as Fox's "Leave Her to Heaven," or "Blood and Sand". Still, for fans of Power, O'Hara, or the underrated Laird Cregar, an entertaining and physically lavish production worth more than one viewing. Old Hollywood the way it used to be, when opulent production values and sincere casts made such nonsense a real treat.
Johnny Depp...eat your heart out..........2007-05-29
Old school pirate movie...just as good as newer Pirates of the Caribbean...Tyrone Power swashbuckling his way throughout...if you like pirates and old films...this is a movie for you.
The Black Swan.......2007-05-20
Ecxelent Adventure. Tyron Power at his best with the gratest Maureen Ohara. Full of ecxitement, great for kids.
Maureen O'Hara and Tyrone Power - who could want more?.......2007-05-15
I mainly purchased this because Maureen O'Hara did a commentary track for this picture. Since she is a favorite of mine, I wanted to hear some of her stories and insight in working with Tyrone Power and on this particular film. I only wish that the other commenter would have had more information about the film (or 20th Century Fox) to speed up the dialog between them or to prompt Maureen O'Hara to say more than she did. As for the film, it's a classic tale of pirates and adventure. A good addition to any collection.
Great adaptation of the Sabatini novel.......2007-04-14
An excellent movie. Lest we forget, it was based on the classic swashbuckler written by Rafael Sabatini.

Customer Reviews:
Superb, but..........2007-06-08
This film is superb. I watched it many times as a young child, and am thrilled to be able to watch it again as an adult. It's one of the rare few films with more than enough wonder to hold the attention of a child, yet enough depth and honesty to touch the soul of a grown up; a deeply meaningful, poinient animated classic. Another reviewer described it as the "best animated film ever," and while I'm not quite bold enough to echo that sentiment, I can't seem to think of one that surpasses it at the moment.
That said, I'm deeply irritated by the edits that were made. The producers who did it should be ashamed of themselves for altering a single word. Who exactly did they think they were protecting? Or was it just a money thing? Stupid fools. Unchanged, it would get 5 stars, but I in good concience, I must give it 4 stars for that reason along.
Beautiful.......2007-05-21
The presentation (picture and sound) are excellent. The edits mentioned are very annoying (and not edited out of the earlier DVD edition) but the widescreen presentation is much nicer to watch. The extra features are somewhat interesting but do not reveal anything very interesting about the movie itself (story-writing, making of, casting, etc.). Worth getting, but I am also keeping my earlier DVD for posterity.
The Last Unicorn Anniversary Edition DVD.......2007-05-15
My little girl and I both really liked this DVD, especially the enhanced 5.1 sound and cleaned up video transfer.
Really, my only gripe with this edition is the small edits that remove a couple of uses of the words "damn" and "hell," that I recall were used in the older versions.
As far as price, order accuracy, speed of delivery, and payment and shipping accuracy, I cannot complain at all.
I ordered online on a Saturday afternoon, and it was waiting for me before the following Friday.
A beautiful DVD . . . but may disappoint some fans.......2007-05-03
The color is beautiful and crisp and the audio is crystal clear. and what might be unforgivable to some . . . is the editing of "damn". It appears three times . . . if my memory serves me right. The first time it is spoken by Ruk("I don't care how many damn spells you put on her! Get rid of that harpy!) the bad guys can say damn. But the good guys obviously can't. They're removed it from both Molly's speech and Lir's exclamation as he asending the steps to meet Amalthea. They very neatly edited it out. You won't notice it if you haven't memorized the script, but for those who have(like me) it ruins one of the most moving speeches in the movie. What does this movie have a G rating anyway? Busty trees, naked ladies and crazed, nipply harpies . . . slap a PG on "The Late Unicorn" and give my "Damn!", damnnit!
I'm also disappointed that they used Mia Farrow's singing for "Now that I'm a Woman" when the german soundtrack has a different woman sing the song. I thought they would remove Mia's singing and use the better version.
It's a shame that after all this work that went into this release, they changed the one thing that did matter to fans and didn't change the other thing that obviously needed to be changed.
I'm not sorry I bought it, i got 2 dvd of it i love the last Unicorn however. It's a major improvment on the old DVD.
A Cult Classic For All Ages.......2007-04-19
I remember watching this film as a child (whether is was renting it, owning it, or seeing it on the Disney Channel) and it's one of those old classics that has managed to reappear in my movie library. I had the beat up VHS copy last and I've recently given it the upgrade it deserved (especially after the VHS mysteriously disapeared when I wasn;t home...seriously, that did happen and it sucked! But back to my review) and I have to hand it to you...The picture: MUCH clearer (and wider too), the colors: As BRIGHT and RICH as ever, and the sound: Good old America, CAN'T GET ANY BETTER than that! So there's my review, but the re-release becuase A.) It was recent and B.) You'll love it!!

Walter Matthau is in peak form in Hopscotch, a featherweight spy-game comedy in which he plays a CIA agent who's way smarter than his dimwitted superiors. That's the fantasy part--this amusing cat-and-mouse game is so lopsided that you can't take it seriously. The movie's charm is derived from the sardonic pleasure with which Matthau makes his pursuers look like idiots, after they've targeted him for "termination" for publishing a tell-all memoir about his tenure in "the Company." He's no stool pigeon, however; it's his boss (played with blustery thick-headedness by the great Ned Beatty) who's abusing his power, so Matthau recruits an old lover (Glenda Jackson) to join him in a globetrotting game of clandestine cleverness. Under Ronald Neame's too-casual direction, this is a not-so-wild goose chase, but Matthau and Jackson (reuniting after they had fun making the 1978 comedy House Calls) have an easygoing chemistry that's nicely balanced with Matthau's cantankerous shenanigans. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Miles Kendig knows too much. One of the CIA's top international operatives, he suddenly finds himself relegated to a desk job in an agency power play. Unwilling to go quietly, Kendig, with the aid of a chic Viennese widow, puts himself back in the game by writing a memoir exposing the innermost secrets of every major intelligence agency in the world. The CIA wants Kendig dead, but he refuses to cooperatehe's having too much fun. Based on Brian Garfield's best-selling novel, and starring the inimitable comic team of Walter Matthau and Glenda Jackson, Ronald Neame's Hopscotch is a smart and stylish tale of international intrigue and a cat-and-mouse comedy.
Customer Reviews:
Walter Matthau.......2007-06-26
Very funny and light hearted movie. I have had a taped version for many years and it was wearing out so I was very happy to be able to purchase it on DVD.
It's an excellent comedy with great acting by all. A stick it to the CIA plot which is done with a lot of humor.
It is a pleasnt alternative to blow em up and kill everyone movie.
Hilariously clever.......2007-04-11
This movie is so funny, it seems that everyone should know about it! It has a clever plot; you will never guess the ending if you're a first time viewer. The acting is superb; I am guessing the person who chose the cast was a genious. It is a must have for every video library.
A delightful comedy worth watching again and again.......2007-03-07
Walter Matthau, Glenda Jackson, Sam Waterston, and Herbert Lom are all quite delightful in this film ... The subtle and clever humor is a nice break from the in-your-face brazen humor found so often today. The combination of Matthau and Jackson is a bit unexpected, but the chemistry really works! I am very very glad that Matthau decided to go through with this project, as it ranks as one of my favorite movies! The commentary by writer and director are well worth listening to. I thoroughly enjoyed reading the book on which this movie is based; it's easy to see why it earned an Edgar for the author!
Nicely Done.......2007-03-03
I just watched this movie tonight. I love Walter Matthau, and there's plenty of his classic character bits here to keep the viewer constantly entertained. Although it received mixed reviews when it came out in 1980, Hopscotch still remains popular and is driven by a more than average, clever plot. Glenda Jackson has good chemistry with Walter, even though there's an age difference to deal with. And there's a surprisingly good deal of Mozart and Rossini sprinkled throughout the sound track, mainly because Matthau loved these composers. Matthau's character, who's writing an expose (his memoirs) of the CIA, needs writing music and inevitably puts on a record of a Mozart opera (The Marriage of Figaro). This was Matthau's own idea. He seemed to have brought much to this movie. For instance, he dreamed up the sequence where he becomes reacquainted with Glenda Jackson via a conversation with her about wines. That scene works very nicely. You won't waste your time watching this one. I recommend it as a good brief escape from our mad world. Also, don't miss the introductory commentary from the director and the writer.
Walter Matthaw at his best.......2007-01-21
Don't know how I missed this when it was released. It's quickly become a family favorite. A movie that can be watched multiple times without tiring of the content, or the acting.

Convinced an air force commander (Gary

A story line that truly deserves the A-list treatment, The Last Unicorn is memorable for its attempts to stay faithful to its origins, the Peter Beagle novel of the same name. The animation is vintage Rankin/Bass, and that's too bad; but there's an undeniable strength in this tale and telling. A unicorn (Mia Farrow)--she believes herself the last--searches for any others of her kind, while avoiding the malevolent Red Bull, the agent believed to have destroyed the rest of the herd. Along the way, she is mistaken, ignored, attacked, and obsessed about, finally finding help from a magician named Schmendrick (Alan Arkin) and a knight named Prince Lir (Jeff Bridges). A haunting film that pays homage to mythology and the people who love it. --Keith Simanton

good movie.......2007-05-03
The Last Unicorn is my favorite movie of all time. I have loved it since I first watched this when I was a little boy, and I love it just as much now as I ever did it is a good movie for all but The DVD says it has special features, but I can't find them!
My kids like it too.......2007-04-30
My boys never wanted to watch this "girlie" movie, until I told them a shortened version for a bedtime story. Then I told them that we had the movie, and they watched it. They were stuck to the TV, they would not move! I'm glad that they like it as much as I did, and still do!
Great Movie for Everyone.......2007-03-28
I first watched this when I was a little girl, and I love it just as much now as I ever did. It teaches kids good lessons nand is a joy to watch.
Flight of dragons you got competiton.......2007-03-27
I bought this movie about three months ago I belive I got in some time in Early January. I had know about it longer than that. I belive the first time I saw it up for sale was in August of either 06 or 05. I however was reluctant to get it I wasn't sure if it would be as god as the other animated movies that came out in the same decade such as the original return of the king. This movie has been out a long time in vhs format but is relatively new in dvd format. The film was original relased 25 years ago in the middle of 1982. But has only been avilable in DVD format for about the last three years or mid 2004 This a phonominal move tells the story of a young unicorn who is despertly searching to find here missing kin. Can she with the aid of a bumbling magican defeat the red bull and free the other unicorns. This movie has phonominal cast including the phonimal Christopher lee who recently appeared in the Fellowship of the Ring and the Two towers and who was also original appeared in one scene in the Return of King but unfortunaetly that scene of the movie was cut out of the widescream and theatrical version of movie to save time and two speed up the film. You can see it but only in the four disk special extended edition. Also thought to inform you there are two version of this there is a regular version then there is a special 20th aniversary version you can get them on Amazon for under 20 dollars if you get them used in just very good conditon. A word of advice if you have a dvd player but you live out side of North Americas in contents Europe- through Austarila I recommend you get this in VHS format if possible. There are copies of this dvd up for sale on amazon in region two format but they are kind pricy the cheaptest you can purchase a copy of the dvd in this format is some where inbetween $100 and 110 with the shipping fee include. A word of warming even though this movie got a g-rating some parts of this movie like the scenes with the red bull chasing the unicorn and the part when the wizard is being smothered by the female tree may be to intense or to vulgar for kids under the age of thirteen to handle depending on what there parents our guardians thinks is appropriate for there age. Will the unicorn free here people. There is also a novel version of this as well.

Long before Unforgiven deconstructed the Western, or Blazing Saddles lampooned it, Cat Ballou poked the genre in the eye. An altogether enjoyable comedy, the film is full of small surprises, big laughs, and wonderful character turns. Catherine Ballou (Jane Fonda) is a schoolteacher until a hired thug kills her daddy. To protect what she loves, she collects two petty criminals, a wisecracking hired hand, and a hired killer, Kid Shelleen (Lee Marvin). Unfortunately, Shelleen is a raging drunk who is so inebriated and unsteady with a gun he literally misses the broad side of a barn. However, Cat, has, as they used to say in those days, a mind of her own, and she masterminds a spectacular train heist that puts them all on the lam. Marvin won an Academy Award for his role as the derelict Shelleen, and his performances (he actually has two) are still topnotch and on target. The framing device, two wandering minstrels, played by Stubby Kaye and Nat "King" Cole, are the maraschino cherries on the top of this Wild West confection. --Keith Simanton

A classic.......2007-03-26
Always been in love with this film! Now that I have it on DVD, I can watch it and watch it and watch it! The price was really good too.
Nostalgic film.......2007-03-14
I understand why this film is so high-starred, but it simply does not deserve the five stars, nor the four. I'll try to explain. The director, as he admits in the little extra piece, intended to make a comedy in the West. He put together the basic ingredients for it: a beautiful Fonda, two young simpletons that aren't Western material -more fit for Broadway-, and a funny drunkard. Silverstein didn't have a clear idea of what kind of film was going to come out of this (as happens to all bad directors) but when he saw Lee Marvin act his role, he had one moment of lucidness, even brilliance, he told Marvin to try to make us cry instead of laugh. Boy, did that make a difference! Lee Marvin steals the show totally.
Lee Marvin was a great, a fantastic actor. But he belonged to a past era, when real Westerns were shot, when classic directors still hung around the movie studios. That day had gone, not for him, obviously, but for the industry. It makes me sad to see this film, and to see bufoons like Silverstein mockering and degrading the great American West. If it wasn't for Lee Marvin nobody would remember this film. What happens around him in this film I just don't care, he is the show. The rest belong in Park Avenue.

CATBALLOU............................. ! WE STILL LOVE YOU ?
Cat Ballou.......2007-01-22
It is a great movie, I love the singing. We realy enjoyed watching it again after so many year.
Kabuki In The Far West.......2006-11-28
Although "Cat Ballou" is usually categorized as a Western Comedy, this film actually resembles a musical; in fact, the songs chanted by balladeers Nat King Cole and Stubby Kaye are at the heart of "Cat Ballou."
The emotional range of these pieces is quite impressive--ranging from the principal ballad's ironic high-spirits, through the poignancy of "They'll never make her cry" to the sublime ridicule of "And now you are old." That final song, which sounds as though it were actually written in the 1890's, is a hilarious outpouring of moralistic sentimentality--appropriately sung in an Old West brothel! It's noteworthy that the balladeers always appear in front of the camera--never as mere background music performers. Thus singing in the streets, on the prairie, etc., they literally accompany the action in the same way that Japanese musicians appear onstage during a kabuki drama performance: they become an intrinsic part of what their songs are interpreting. Naturally, the presence of these troubadours undermines any sense of film "realism." However, I have no problem with such unreality; "realism" in any art form, including films, is never real enough. Furthermore, the fantastic presence of singers Cole and Kaye following the principal characters around certainly seems consonant with the film's overall atmosphere--which is more fairy tale than hard & gritty editorial.
The script itself is fairly light-weigh but coherent; it concerns would-be schoolmarm Catharine Ballou (played charmingly by Jane Fonda) revenging her father's murder at the hands of land-grabbing outlaws in 1890's Wyoming. To further her plans for vengeance--or justice-- she enlists the help of two rather gun-shy outlaws--Michael Callan, with whom she falls in love, and Dwayne Hickman, in a hilarious performance as Callan's unlikely "uncle." She also hires a fantastically gin-soaked gunslinger whom she once idolized from the accounts she read of him in pulp Westerns; the gunman (played flamboyantly by Lee Marvin) manages to sober up long enough to kill Catharine's main antagonist (a noseless monstrosity also acted by Marvin). Along the way, Cat manages to lead a daring train robbery, thus achieving "outlaw" status herself. Further, she finally kills the villain who masterminded her father's murder--which results in her being charged with murder, and inevitably sentenced to hang. Literally in the nick of time she escapes the rope in a scene which is stunning, brilliant cinema; no surprise that Stanley Kubrick used one of these climactic moments in his own masterpiece "A Clockwork Orange."
As the songs that pervade "Cat Ballou" give significance to the action, the actors themselves prove worthy of their balladeers. Young Jane Fonda is indescribably appealing--an amalgam of sheer beauty and talent that I can only call "immortal." As her love interest, Michael Callan seems rather unworthy--but who wouldn't be? As for Dwayne Hickman (TV's original "Dobie Gillis"): he gives a delighful performance, particularly in his initial scene as a fake, but truly drunk, preacher. His introductory line to Jane Fonda is classic in its delivery--"I'm drunk as a skunk!" By contrast, Lee Marvin's gunslinger character seems a bit overdone (his Academy Award for the part notwithstanding). But a fine excess may be considered part and parcel of "Cat Ballou." In any event, this film remains a rarity: 40 years after its release it remains consistently watchable, even lovable-- while many more ambitious/pretentious films have ridden off into the sunset.
