Somebody in Hollywood thought there was some fish-out-of-water potential in this teaming of wild man Woody Harrelson and slow-burning Kiefer Sutherland as a pair of New Mexico cowboys who go to New York to tame the wild, wild, uh ... East. Well, they were mistaken, because this 1994 action-comedy is little more than a tiresome reworking of Crocodile Dundee. Woody and Kiefer head for the Big Apple to rescue the illegal-immigrant daughter of one of their rodeo buddies (who has mysteriously disappeared), and what they discover is a sweatshop operation run by a hot-tempered thug (Dylan McDermott, before his role on TV's The Practice). That's when the boys start using their ropin' and shootin' skills to foil the bad guys. One measure of this film's credibility is the inevitable scene of the boys riding on horseback through the gridlocked streets of Manhattan. Uh huh. You know how it goes... you just have to go with it or marvel at the sheer stupidity of it all. Of course, forget all the sniping if you're a fan of Harrelson or Sutherland--they're both doing their best under the burden of disadvantage. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:
Not all that bad, actually..........2007-05-01
Professional reviewers have savaged this movie, but I think their attitude is a bit harsh.
Yes, the plot has been done before. Yes, the humor is a bit forced in spots. Yes, there is a cringe-worthy torture scene involving a calf. Yes, the villain is a one-dimensional cardboard character.
But, the world will never tire of "buddy" movies, or fish-out-of-water plots. Screwball redneck humor isn't going anywhere either. And if we must have a one-dimensional villain, at least he's dreamy Dylan McDermott.
"The Cowboy Way" won't win any Oscars, but it doesn't aspire to; it was meant as light entertainment, and it *is* surprisingly entertaining.
Woody Harrelson is "Pepper", the comic half of the duo, and he has a certain brash charm which actually is amusing to watch. Kiefer Sutherland plays "Sonny", the deadpan half of the pair, and his serious nature is an effective foil to Harrelson's excesses. Their characters are believable, even if the plot strains credibility at times. Sutherland has a memorable moment during a scene that takes place in a morgue after the death of a minor character; the simple grace and dignity of his farewell gesture reveal he has inherited at least some of the great subtlety and power of his father, the magnificent actor Donald Sutherland.
Their adventures in New York, searching for a lost friend and attempting to rescue a kidnapped daughter from slavery, take a few detours along the way. The pair quarrel, seperate, and Pepper meets some interesting New Yorkers while Sonny gets in serious trouble, but they reunite just in time to kick some bad guy butt with the help of some of New York's finest.
The bad guy is dispensed with in a rather creative, if cruel fashion, romance blossoms between Sonny and the female lead and they all drive off into the sunset in their pickup truck.
I'm neither a big fan of things cowboy, nor particularly of any of the actors involved, and from the reviews I was not expecting much of this movie, but it was worth a few chuckles. I can think of worse ways of spending an afternoon than watching this. I gave it four stars partly to make up for the harsh reviews it has gotten from others though I think it really deserves three. If you are sick of overhyped, straining-for-Oscar movies and want a mildly enjoyable, unpretentious bit of entertainment, this little sleeper may be perfect for you.
great comedy.......2006-08-12
its very funny, a great comedy with a decent story line.... if you like cowboy humor this is a great video to check out!
Good son, bad son........2006-08-04
Not the greatest rodeo movie ever made but by no means the worst.
Tends to drag on a little but overall is worth the effort. Some of the casting is strange mainly because there is no chemistry between the characters, but the storyline is above average and Keifer Sutherland does enough to carry the rest over the line.
Crime Solving Cowboys In the Big City...What A Concept!.......2006-06-12
I guess it's still true (to some degree anyway) that being a MOVIE STAR has more, uh, cachet to it than being a TV actor. But sometimes you have to wonder why. Watching this mediocre-at-best 1994 effort featuring former TV star Woody Harrelson, future TV leads Kiefer Sutherland and Dylan McDermott, you just might wonder why that's the case. These actors can all be justifiably proud of their work on (respectively) CHEERS, 24, and THE PRACTICE. I can't imagine that they bring up this film much in conversation as being one of the highlights of their careers.
Which is not to say that they don't all give it their best shot. As our cowboys-loosed-in-the-Big-Apple heroes, Sutherland and Harrelson are affable enough. And it's interesting to see McDermott take on a menacing villain's role. But otherwise, this movie is pretty predictable "fish out of water" fare. And speaking of TV shows, didn't Dennis Weaver pretty much mine all the possibilities of out of that particular plotline decades ago on McCLOUD?
Of course, McCloud never resorted to such grotesqueries as we witness in the "hungry calf" scene. Even in the new millennium, television seldom stoops quite THAT low. The filmmakers must have been getting a little desperate at that point. I believe this is what's known as "jumping the shark." Or some variation on that phrase involving a "calf." One shudders to think.
Can I give it 6 Stars?.......2005-04-16
The film brings to the screen the story of two cowboys out of New Mexico who come to NY looking for their friend who's gone missing while searching for his daughter.
It is a highly entertaining, action-packed adventure with significant elements of comedy. To a certain extent it brings to mind Next of Kin starring Patrick Swayze.
Woody Harrelson, Kiefer Sutherland, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are exceptional to say the least. All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100% and it really shows (the chemistry is AMAZING)!
The plot, the setting, the dialogues, and the music, are all WONDERFUL!
The Cowboy Way is a movie definitely worth watching, and one to seriously consider adding to your movie collection!

As time-travel adventures go, this 1983 outing is an enjoyable one: a loosey-goosey shaggy-dog story about an '80s kind of guy who gets tossed back to the '70s--the 1870s, that is. Fred Ward plays the hero, a motocross racer who, along with his motorcycle, accidentally rides into the middle of a science experiment and is transported to the Old West. There, he runs into a cast of bad guys that includes some of the best character actors of the period: L.Q. Jones, Tracey Walter, Richard Masur, Ed Lauter, and Peter Coyote. It's your classic fish-out-of-water setup, with Ward as the slightly dippy wise guy who startles the heck out of the cowboys and pioneers of the period with his motorized bike, until he runs out of gas. The movie runs out of fuel as well, but it's an enjoyable ride while it lasts. Notable for its coproducer and cowriter: Michael Nesmith, formerly of the Monkees. --Marshall Fine
Customer Reviews:
Motorcycle Guy Drives into the Past.......2007-06-19
Lyle Swann (Fred Ward, "Escape from Alcatraz," "Silkwood," "Tremors") is running a cross-country motorcycle race when he is launched more than 100 years into the past. He meets a motley cast of characters that includes criminal Porter Reese (Peter Coyote, "E.T.," "Sphere," "Patch Adams,"), and Claire Cygne (Belinda Bauer). Lyle never does realize that he has traveled to the past during the movie.
This movie is actually fun to watch if you like time travel movies. There are aspects of this movie that are vaguely reminiscent of time travel stories by Robert A. Heinlein, such as "By His Bootstraps" and "All You Zombies..." I enjoyed how Swann reacted to his surroundings as though he had gotten lost in modern America, though he had traveled into the past. Most time travel movies have the principal character or characters know that they traveled into the past and have them react accordingly.
This movie does have some plot holes, typical for time travel movies in general and especially for low budget time travel movies. However, the movie is sufficiently interesting that you keep watching to see what Lyle Swann will do next, most of the time anyway. The biggest problem the DVD release has is that it replaced the ending originally seen on HBO and available on VHS with an awful ending that has significantly less irony and I found personally less satisfying. I would probably have given this movie 3 or 4 stars had the original ending been retained.
Michael Nesmith co-produced this movie. He also wrote the music and appears in a cameo. People who remember the 60's well may recall that Nesmith was a member of The Monkees (the tallest member, who was also one of the two members who could actually play instruments when they joined the band). Nesmith became a powerful force in the music video business, producing videos and records while still recording music. This movie was one of his numerous projects after departing The Monkees.
Even with the awful change to the end of this movie, it is a good movie to watch if you want to see a different take on time travel movies. The movie was filmed with a serious and sincere tone rather than being played for laughs. Indeed, there are several violent deaths in this movie that make this movie unsuitable for family members younger than 12 or 13 years old.
Because of the change to the ending I recommend either trying to track down the VHS with the original ending, or wait until another DVD comes out with the original ending.
Good luck!
TimeRider.......2006-03-10
I loved this movie from its original release and have looked for it for years. Kicked myself for not buying it from the old VHS video store that had it!!! Does the DVD edit out the scene and storyline of the cowpoke(famous character actor - what is his name?) getting his nose bit off?? If they deleted the copter scene I am amazed they didn't cut this too!!! I want to buy the DVD but what is the point if it is missing crucial stuff!!! Pam
You got it, dude........2005-10-12
Alan Satterfield writes, "it always made me think that maybe he had slept with his grandmother...."
Yup, that's the point. You will also note that his last name is Swann, and hers is Cygne (French for Swan). And he tells her that he's from Los Angeles, and later notes that his Grandmother came to Los Angeles looking for her lover.
Fun film. Totally ruined by the changed ending. Buy the VHS version instead (although some of these have the bad ending as well.)
Grandmother ?.......2005-10-02
Does anyone remember that he was wearing a necklace that his grandmother had given him & that woman he slept with took it from him just before he leaped back to the present from the past ? it always made me think that maybe he had slept with his grandmother....anybody else.... by the way i loved this film & was delited that it came back.... the helecopter scene was a Killer ~! Alan~! P.S. I often wonder if Niclas Cage & Smalls ( The Wart Hog From Hell) as holly Hunter called him in Raising Arizona ...were indeed Brothers...they were both adopted were they not & indeed both had Road Runner Tatoos ...as he was about to blow up he pulled down on the front of Small's shirt & seen the Tatoo..was his look of shock & horror only for the pulled pin or also the Tatoo.... any way!!!
Good not great.......2005-08-28
I first saw this movie when I was in 8 th grade and loved it. Now that I have seen it 21 years later it doesn't quite hold up, but is still entertaining. Some of the lingo Fred Ward uses is down right cheesey, but that is the 80's. The movies is shorter than I remember it too. It was worth the $10

Description
Superstars Mel Gibson and Goldie Hawn team up with this non-stop action-comedy directed by John Badham. Hiding under the FBI Witness Protection Program, Rick Jarmin (Gibson) gets nervous when old flame Marianne Graves (Hawn) recognizes him. But before he can assume a new identity, the man he put in jail (David Carradine) is released and comes to pay his respects. Rick and Marianne find themselves thrown together on an exhilarating cross-country scramble, barely evading the gangsters, police and an amorous veterinarian (Joan Severance). Their whirlwind travels eventually lead to an unforgettable climax in an elaborate zoo exhibit. PBS-TV calls the film "a roller coaster of a movie with hot action and wild humor! This Bird soars!"
Hold onto your hats and get ready for a wild ride with some of today's hottest stars! Woody Harrelson, Kiefer Sutherland and Dylan McDermott bring the wide open plains to the crowded big city in this rip roarin' urban action-comedy, from popular producer Brian Grazer. A missing girl has Sutherland and Harrelson saddled up for big trouble as they set out to find her within the badlands of New York City. Featuring plenty of excitement and nonstop laughs, The Cowboy Way, is a "wildly funny, edge-of-your-seat romp" (ABC Radio Network).

Clarity and sound are excellent. Have always enjoyed Gene Autry and remember seeing him in person in about 1949. Look forward to obtaining more of his collection.

Gene, Smiley, and Pancho are a great team. Smiley is very funny. Gene does some great songs like "South of the Border, Cowboy and the Lady, and Maria Elena. Pancho is great. Makes everybody laugh.

Customer Reviews:
DOWN DAKOTA WAY.......2003-09-09
I rate this dvd a 3 star, only because of the ommitance of approximately 15 minutes. Being an avid fan of Roy Rogers, I want to see his movies in the uncut version. That includes the Republic logo at the start and end of the movie. The quality is excellent and so is the extra information. I am hoping that some other company will be producing these movies in the uncut version on dvd.
Information Plus.......2003-08-11
As a longtime fan of Roy Rogers, I was very happy to see what looked like a high quality product available. The extra material on these "Happy Trails Theatre" DVD's is excellent and the transfer to DVD is also very good quality. However, as a Roy Rogers "fanatic" I would like to see the "uncut" version of the movie. In every release from this studio movies that range from 75 to 53 min. are cropped to about 52 min to allow the introductions & interviews to be fit in.Love the extra info but I want the movie intact.
Roy Rogers rides to the rescue, again........2001-12-19
Roy Rogers discovers that the stepson of his old schoolteacher is riding the outlaw trail. Working with an unscrupulous cattleman, the young hellion commits murder and mayhem. What's even worse, the bad guys secretly try to market cattle inflicted with hoof-and-mouth disease. Roy must work quickly to save the ranchers of Sunset Valley from disaster.
Shortly before he made the the jump to Saturday morning TV in the 1950s, Roy Rogers made a new series of action-packed Westerns for Republic Studios. Filmed in "Trucolor," these pictures stress hard riding outdoor action rather than the intrusive musical numbers that plagued some of Roy's earlier films. Astride Trigger, billed as "The Smartest Horse in the Movies," Roy and his friends help the sheriff outshoot the bad guys. Dale Evans is present, but Bob Nolan and The Sons of the Pioneers gave way to Foy Willing and The Riders of the Purple Sage. Expect some singing, but not enough to impede the blazing six-guns. Pat Brady is around as Roy's comic relief sidekick. The violence is bloodless enough to qualify as "G" rated entertainment. The production values are Grade B, but nobody made Westerns like Republic. Some of the color tones have a green and blue tint that looks a little odd. Regardless, relish the nostalgia and introduce today's plugged in kids to the days when the West was really wild. Enjoy the ride. ;-)
