A lusty and rousing adventure, this calls to mind those glorious costume dramas produced so capably by the old Hollywood studio system--hardly surprising, in that its title character, a de facto Robin Hood in Old California, provided starring vehicles for Douglas Fairbanks and Tyrone Power, the '50s TV hit, and dozens of serials and features. Zorro, a pop-fiction creation invented by Johnston McCulley in 1918, is given new blood in this fast-moving and engaging version, which actually works as a sequel to the story line in the Fairbanks-Power saga, The Mark of Zorro. A self-assured Anthony Hopkins is Don Diego de la Vega, a Mexican freedom fighter captured and imprisoned just as Spain concedes California to Santa Ana. Twenty years later, he escapes from prison to face down his mortal enemy, a land grabbing governor played with slimy spitefulness by Stuart Wilson. Too old to save the local peasants on his own, he trains bandito Antonio Banderas to take his place. Much swashbuckling ensues as Banderas woos Catherine Zeta-Jones, becomes a better human being, and saves the disenfranchised rabble. Director Martin Campbell wisely instills a measure of frivolity into the deftly choreographed action sequences, while letting a serious tone creep in when appropriate. This covers much ground under the banner of romantic-action-adventure, and it does so most excellently. --Rochelle O'Gorman

In this day of movies in which one can't tell whether the action was manufactured by computer generation or by a cookie cutter, The Mask of Zorro is a grand throwback. It recalls and celebrates the fantasy workshop that Hollywood was and can be at its best. It's an audience pleaser in the best sense of the word, combining great-looking performers with gorgeous vistas and production design, a story that is familiar yet never insults the viewer's intelligence, and plenty of eye-popping action.
Anthony Hopkins stars as the original Zorro, a masked vigilante protecting his people from official corruption in Mexico and what will become California (from Hannibal Lecter to Merchant-Ivory to action hero--is there nothing this man cannot do?). He's imprisoned for his troubles, and upon his release, mentors an impetuous pupil (Antonio Banderas, more suave than ever) in the fine arts of swordplay and triumphing over evil. Catherine Zeta-Jones capably portrays the beauty linked to both men--Zorro I's daughter, Zorro II's object of desire.
The plotting contains few surprises, but the interplay between the three leads is always winning, and the winks to the swashbuckling genre are playful without ever being heavy-handed or campy. --David Kronke

family film.......2007-05-07
Great entertainment for the whole family, I enjoyed it age 72 and my grand children 14 and 11 and daughter age 45 .........forany age I think.
LOVE MY ZORRO.......2007-01-10
Antonio Bandaras is the far best Zorro actor. His accent brings life to the folk hero. Catherine Zeta-Jones is perfect for the part she plays.
Over all the movie is great for those who like action movies as well as romance. Bring on Antonio as Zorro!
Just A Lot of Swashbuckling Fun!.......2006-09-20
"The Mask of Zorro" is a rare case of an action movie that doesn't break any boundaries, yet doesn't seem formulaic. Zorro is the legendary fictional hero who protects the people against tyrannical villains, usually clownish Mexican soldiers and greedy bureaucrats.
As most are aware, the story begins when Diego De La Vega, aka Zorro, (Anthony Hopkins) does one last good deed for the locals by bringing the greedy Rafael Montero (Stuart Wilson) to justice. But Montero finds Zorro's secret lair and exacts heart-braking vengeance upon him, Diego's daughter is stolen and is imprisoned for twenty years. Later, the daughter grows into the beautiful Elena (Catherine Zeta-Jones), who knows nothing of her true past.
The other arc that intertwines is that of Alejandro Murietta (Antonio Banderas), who also loses everything when confronted by one of Montero's goons, the ruthless Captain Love (Matt Letscher). Alejandro and Diego, now escaped from prison, team up to bring both men to justice, and do so with the presence of a hero long-absent, but never forgotten---Zorro!
The acting in this movie is perfect for an action/adventure, because the actors bring more to the screen than the script probably suggested. Banderas brings so many layers to the character of Alejandro: first a clownish thug, then a man who can only quench his thirst for vengeance by becoming a charming noble. Hopkins, as always, has a believeable screen presence, and always helps us see what a tortured soul he really is, yet manages to keep his patient resolve. And Catherine Zeta Jones in her pre-Oscar role is more than a damsel in distress. In fact, Elena Montero is never a damsel at all. She's a sexy, feisty woman who never loses courage in the face of turmoil. She's really an exceptional heroine. Martin Campbell (the director) never allows his female characters to be useless pawns (see "Golden-Eye"), and this is no exception.
The villains, however, are also better than expected. Stuart Wilson worked with director Martin Campbell in "No Escape" as a cannibalistic gang-leader, who frankly sent chills down my spine everytime I saw him. Here, his character of Montero isn't necessarily evil, but has no problem taking extreme measures to satisfy his own greed. The underrated success of this film, in my opinion, is the performance of Matt Letscher as Captain Love. Love is a sadistic soldier whose viciousness is matched by his exceptional swordsman skills. Every scene when Banderas and Letscher are together is simply amazing, because so much has been established that we can barely stand the tension between them. The obligatory moment where Love and Alejandro (as the new Zorro) finally staredown for a final fight is simply breathtaking, because so much anger and determination has climaxed to this one moment! It's really an impressive moment---so simple, but so heart-pounding.
But beyond the acting is also a high-quality production. The sets and costuming are authentic (no "Wild Wild West" anachronisms here), the music by James Horner is one his best score's to date, the sound effects are crisp and sharp, the photography is gorgeous as it captivates the beauty of the red sunsets, and the action sequences are awesome! The swordfights are well-choreographed, and never use digital effects to "enhance" the action. There is a neat horse chase, and the final sequence in a Mexican mine is intense and breath-taking!
"The Mask of Zorro" is what action/adventure should be. Funny, sexy, fast-paced, well-acted, and exciting all amidst a top-notch production! Trust me on this, this movie is NEVER boring! Because the DVD doesn't cost much, and is packed with excellent Extras...you can't go wrong.
Zorro: The Next Generation.......2006-09-03
The Mask of Zorro brings to the screen the story of who else, but the well-known Mexican hero.
The setting is California in the transitional period following Spain's withdrawal from Mexico and Zorro, due to old age, can no longer defend the people against oppression and injustice. Subsequently, he needs to find someone to replace him or else the legend of Zorro will die with him...
The film combines romance, drama, and adventure in such a way that it spells success.
Moreover, the fascinating culture and traditions of pre-union California as well as the historical time period in question are presented very well in the film.
Needless to say, Anthony Hopkins, Antonio Banderas, Catherine Zeta-Jones, and the rest of the cast have truly outdone themselves with their performances, which are outstanding to say the least! All the actors, without exceptions, give it their 100%! Their great talent and chemistry clearly shows, thus providing an entertaining film that can be watched over and over again.
The setting, the dialogues, the music and the costumes are all wonderful!
Very well written and very well presented, it is a movie definitely worth watching, as it will surely put you in a good mood!

The Zorro brand of hot-blooded derring-do returns with The Legend of Zorro, starring Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones in the roles that brought them stardom with The Mask of Zorro. Now married for ten years and parents to young rascal Joaquim (charming Adrian Alonso, perhaps being set up for a future Son of Zorro), dashing swordsman Alejandro (Banderas, a Spaniard playing a Mexican) and sultry spitfire Elena De La Vega (Zeta-Jones, a Welshwoman playing a Spaniard) abruptly divorce, sending Alejandro on a drunken binge--which only gets worse when he learns Elena is being wooed by the mysterious Armand (Rufus Sewell, a Brit playing a Frenchman). Little does Alejandro know that Elena has ulterior motives, and that a worldwide conspiracy and a secret weapon will soon threaten the integrity of the U.S. The Legend of Zorro has way too much plot, leaving room for only two genuinely preposterous donnybrooks and a handful of lackluster brawls. Banderas and Zeta-Jones flash a bit of their considerable charisma, but by and large they (and the movie as a whole) are on autopilot. Not awful, but lacking any real spark. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
It's more suitable for kids than adults.......2007-06-28
The action scenes are childish and funny. The plot is just an excuse to joke around. It's still enjoyable and worth watching once. The Mask of Zorro is much more exciting.
Fun to Watch If Relaxed.......2007-06-22
Antonio Banderas is a wonderful actor (not to mention the prowess of Catherine Zeta-Jones), so I knew from the start that there was a good chance I would like this movie. At the beginning the action sword fighting and running scenes are rather unrealistic, but I thought enjoyable to watch.
It's not the deepest drama or action movie you will watch, but that is just fine if you go into this movie for more of an "easy-to-watch" action/comedy.
When you sit down to watch this movie, please be relaxed. It's just a movie, and if you start to think of the historical inaccuracies you might become very frustrated. Some examples are (don't worry, no real spoilers)
*Keep in mind, this movie takes place in 1850
1) Abraham Lincoln appeared at the end - (Lincoln was president 1861-1865)
2) There is some talk of the Confederacy - (Confederacy was formed in 1861
3) General Bouregard meets an untimely demise - (He died in 1893)
Have fun and find more on your own.
If you like light, easy to watch movies - buy
If you like light movies but don't want to buy unless it's great - rent
If you want serious - don't watch
If you can't stand historical inaccuracies - forget you heard about this movie.
Legend of Zorro.......2007-05-07
This is probably one of my favorite films and I ordered this on DVD, as I only had it on VHS and it has been watched MANY times. I love the actor, like who wouldn't, unless they were dead or in a coma. The action and story are great, with LOTS of action and humor that I really liked. I,
also, have the sequel and TRULY hope there will be more to come.
The Horse And The Kid Steal The Show.......2007-04-27
This review refers to the Widescreen Special DVD edition of "The Legend of Zorro"...
Kids will have no trouble sitting through this less then worthy sequel to the 1998 "Mask Of Zorro". With it's PG rating it has lost the fire and passion between the stars(Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta-Jones) and the storyline. It was definitely lacking in several areas that fans might have expected to find. There was plenty of swashbuckling action, explosions and acrobatics to keep the younger set invovled, but a bit lackluster and predictable. On the up side, it's worth the view as in the sequel to "Romancing the Stone","Jewel of the Nile" we have already come to love these characters and it's nice to see the story continue.Only not as good as Jewel. It did provided a few very funny moments that were mostly provided by the horse(think "Cat Ballou"), and the young son of the De La Vega's was a charmer and added a reason to care about what happens to the family.
The story picks up ten years after the first. California Statehood is in need of Zorro's help. The people want it, but there are a few who will stop at nothing to block it. These men are dangerous and evil and their plans include terrorizing and destruction. Meanwhile the De La Vegas are having problems of their own. Elena tells the big Z she wants him home, it's too risky for him to continue his heroic ways, and their son needs him to be a father. Zorro's first priority is the people, so Elena calls it splitsville. When Alejandro/Zorro, see her involved with the man who is behind all the evilness, he falls apart. But when his son and wife's life are in jeopardy, he heeds the call to action once more. It is then we see some of the sparks fly between the two. In a PG manner of course.
The DVD is gorgeous. Beautiful picture in anamorphic widescreen, great sound and some great special features. Commentary, deleted scenes, Behind the scenes featurettes, English and French subtitles(although I thought it strange there are no Spanish subtitles). There is also a full screen edition available for those who prefer.
Banderas and Zeta-Jones, although nice to look at just seemed to lack the chemistry in this one. I also very much missed the presence of the great Anthony Hopkins. After all saving the family AND the people of California all at once, could take a Knight in shining armour.
The first Zorro was a film I could watch over and over. This one, clocking in at just over two hours, had just a few to many Z's for me...Zzzzzzzzzzz, a bit of a snooze-fest. But I think it may be a good rental for that rainy day when the kids are cooped up in the house......Laurie
Silly, Just Silly.......2007-04-14
There is only one word to describe this flick - SILLY. Good for 10 year olds and younger. Story weak. Acting mediocre. The action sequences look very "staged" and unnatural and are unbelievable. One glaring error. This movie is set in early California, before it becomes a state. Near the end of the film they show an American flag - and it has 50 STARS on it!!! Mama Mia!! Couldn't even get that right. The title should have been "The Legend of Zero".

Customer Reviews:
The man behind the mask.......2007-04-05
"There are many who would proudly wear the mask of Zorro."
In 1995, Martin Campbell exploded onto the Hollywood action film-making scene with Goldeneye, a film that revitalized the stumbling Bond franchise and made Pierce Brosnan a star. In 1998, he released what stands as possibly his best film (even including the fantastic Casino Royale, which cemented Campbell as a Bond film director for the ages) which introduced modern audiences to Zorro, the Robin Hood of 19th-century Mexico and inspiration for Bob Kane's Batman. The Mask of Zorro not only serves as something of a sequel to the Tyrone Power-starring The Mark of Zorro (1940) and throwback to the romance adventure films of its ilk, it is quite simply a brilliant adventure movie that can stand alongside the best work of Fairbanks and Flynn.
Beginning in the 1820's, on the even of Spain's departure from Mexico, "Mask" tells of Don Diego de la Vega (Anthony Hopkins), a Spanish nobleman who protects the opressed as Zorro from the greedy Govenor of California, Raphael Montero. After one final desperate attempt to capture Zorro ends with the hero riding victorious once more into the sunset, things go horribly wrong for the masked swashbuckler. Robbed of his title, lands, and his loved ones, the man once known as Zorro is thrown into prison and left to rot for decades as Montero sails back to spain with Diego's daughter in his arms.
Fast-forward twenty years, Diego escapes from prison only to find Alehandro (Antonio Banderas), a petty thief reeling from his brother's murder at the hands of the bloodthirsty US soldier-turned-mercenary Captain Harrison Love. When it becomes apparent that Love has been hired by Montero, now returned from Spain, for some sinister purpose that once against threatens the peace and prosperity of California, the old hero and the young rogue join forces in a quest for justice and revenge. It then becomes apparent the Montero has brought Diego's daughter, Elena (played by the scorching Catherine Zeta Jones), who remembers nothing of her real father, and things get complicated.
What makes the film work more than anything else is the character dynamics, both hero and villain. Banderas and Hopkins share a master/pupil relationship as Diego trains Alehandro in the ways and philosphies Zorro used to protect the people, and their parallels and personality clashes are well-written and acted with a beautiful on-screen chemistry. Likewise, the sizzling romantic tension between Banderas and Zeta Jones works well on every level, bringing a 90's sexuality to the classical hero/heroine banter seen in films like The Adventures of Robin Hood. And the villains, one an obsessed man who geniunely believes he is doing what's right, the other a borderline-psychotic, bring a contrast (and at times, even depth) not usually seen in antagonists in action films. The build-up to a dual clash between each hero and their opposite number is a perfect example of creating a path to satisfying payoff.
And the payoff is beautiful - sword duels, horse chases, explosions, and fist fights. No one set piece stands out simply because all are so beautifully-coreographed, imaginitively-staged, and perfectly-shot. The final clash at El Dorado demonstrates some of the finest action of its kind in decades. Each scene's musical accompaniment, provided by veteran composer James Horner (Aliens, Braveheart, Titanic) brings an extra level of melancholy to a forgotten father, a pounding cadence to a hectic escape, or a layer of sensuality to a provacative dance number, and everything in-between.
With the extravagant production values, larger than life heroics, and lavish clashes of heroes and villains, The Mask of Zorro does so many adventure films of its kind have failed to do since the days of The Seahawk. An imformative fist-ful of extras and a solid transfer round out a package that no swashbuckling fan should be without. Now if only someone could get Campbell working on that new Prince of Persia movie.
Horray...It's Zorro!.......2007-03-10
The plot of the film is interesting yet easy to follow. Zorro is trying to save the Peasants of Mexico from the despotic rule of Don Rafael Montero...the governor of California. Montero is determined to make California independent from Mexico, but at the expense of the peasants whom he turns into slaves in his gold mine.
A hero should be brave, loyal, just, wise, strong, a ladies man, and so much more. In "The Mask of Zorro" these character traits of the hero are brought to life so well by the makers of the film in the persons of both Zorro (Diego De La Vega) and Alejandro who will become the new Zorro.
One of the best examples of this is when Diego is training Alejandro to take his place. He is so wise because he knows Alejandro even better than Alejandro knows himself! Diego is also wise enough to know that it takes more than just fighting skills to be a hero. That is why he trains alejandro to be a gentleman...a trait that Alejandro will need later on in order to succeed.
The action scenes in the movie are superb...although somewhat unrealistic. The viewer is always on the edge of his/her seat waiting to see the outcome of the various sword fights. My favorite battle scene is the one between Captain Love and Alejandro. I can't say why because I don't want to give away the ending of the movie. However, I doubt that anyone who watches this scene will be dissappoited.
One "battle" that I found very interesting is the one between Alejandro and Elena. I love the irony found in this scene. Alejandro at first declines to fight Elena saying that he doesn't have time to instruct her. Elena reveals that she has had the "proper instruction" since she was four! Then, Elena and Alejandro are dueling with swords but at the same time are kissing! We can see that all at once, Elena wants to defend the man that she believes is her father, but cannot deny her feelings for Alejandro. At the end of the scene, something very unexpected happens, but once again, I can not reveal this to you. I just can't spoil it for you!
In this movie we have such a good balnce between action, adventure, romance, and even some comedy believe it or not. I am a Spanish Teacher and I showed this film to my Spanish Classes as a way to demonstrate how Mexico was once ruled by Spain. My students range in age from 13-18 and almost all of them were captivated by the movie and their eyes were glued to the TV screen! They clapped at the end of the movie and were asking me so many questions.
I would reccomend this movie to anyone really. Go out there and buy it or rent it...you won't be dissapointed!

Fun and exciting.......2007-01-11
Film is fun, exciting and offers two of the most enjoyable to watch stars.
Outstanding action.......2006-12-13
Everyone did great job in this movie from the to the horse, to the actors.
This is non stop action. And the sword fighting looks so real!

Customer Reviews:
Good overview of Zorro legend in film but more info needed.......2004-01-10
I have recently rewatched this and found it to be a good overview of the different film and television versions of Zorro. Unfortunately, I found it a bit disappointing that they barely mentioned the Family Channel tv series. The series ran for several years but only got a brief mention in this documentary.
Also, the movie clips seemed to be pulled mostly from the Alain Delon movie and the Douglas Fairbanks version, with only a few others tossed in. It would have been nice if there had been a greater variety of clips, including from the Family Channel version.
However, in terms of providing a good overview of the different versions, this documentary does do the job.
The fox needs a new one of these.......2002-05-15
When I ordered this film, I expected a much more detailed, better documentary than the final project, going into each Zorro production in detail....This one is much shorter, and many things are just skimmed over, as if they were unimportant. Most of the footage here in the introduction, cut-in scenes, and ending comes from the Alain Delon French film. ... Only three actors from the new Mask of Zorro film wre shown, and the actual movie plot was skimmed over in a breath. But still, this is an impressive look at the evolution of the fox, ....
Zorro began as a pulp fiction-story by Johnston McCulley. He would become famous through the Douglas Fairbanks films. Zorro-imitators began to appear, such as Batman. The Republic serials, Tyrone Power, and Disney all contributed to Zorro's fame. Later, forigen films would come in, as would the new television series and The Mask of Zorro. THis is a good documentary, but needs some work.
Everything a Zorro Fan Needs.......2001-04-10
"The Many Faces of Zorro" is one of those rare documentaries that functions well both as an introduction to the Zorro character, and to explore new information for veteran fans. Tracing Zorro's evolution from pulps to screen, "Faces" also goes into fascinating tangents on such subjects as the Spanish style of fencing and use of the bullwhip. It also explores many little-known Zorro films, foreign and domestic, along with the classic and most-recent Zorro cinema. Thoroughly entertaining, both for the diehard Zorro fan and the Zorro newcomer!

Description
Ride the trail to whip crackin' excitement with Zorro's Black Whip. This 12-chapter serial is the follow-up to 1940's The Mark of Zorro and the sixth film in the Zorro saga. It's the 1880s and Dan Hammond (Francis McDonald) is hellbent on blocking a proposal for Idaho's statehood. To not be opposed, he murders political rival Randolph Meredith (Jay Kirby). Randolph's sister Barbara (Linda Stirling, Tiger Woman in Perils of Darkest Jungle), stealthy with a bullwhip and six-shooter, dons a black suit and mask, becoming the titular "Black Whip". As the avenging vigilante female succesor to the world-renowned hero Zorro, Barbara sets out to foil the evil Hammond and his henchmen at every turn.
Customer Reviews:
Hero Gets Killed in First Chapter!.......2006-01-08
Just be aware that this has absolutely nothing to do with the Zorro character. Not only is Zorro not present, he isn't even mentioned. They really should have called it "The Black Whip," but apparently they wanted the name recongition for the box office.
That said, it's a terrific Western. The Black Whip is a black-costumed vigilante who's talented with a whip and rides madly around saving people in the nick of time--more reminiscent of the Durango Kid than of Zorro. The Black Whip is a woman, no less, but no one realizes it. This is the only serial you'll ever see where the hero gets killed in the first chapter! He's immediately replaced by his sister, who seeks revenge.
While William Witney was away in the service during World War II, Spencer Bennet and Wallace Grissell did a good job of keeping up Republic's tradition of great fistfights and chases--hardly a piece of furniture is left standing after these fights. The cliffhangers are very good as well; I particularly liked the explosives thrown down into a tent, the pitchfork on an unconscious victim, and the creeping flames in the mine tunnel. I also like the way the villain got taken care of at the end.
The beautiful Linda Stirling (real name Loraine Schultz, 1921-1997) earned her title "Queen of the Serials" doing a whole bunch of them for Republic in the 1940's. George J. Lewis, who usually played villians, is a questionable choice for Linda's leading man--he's okay, but I could have thought of several who would have been better for the part of hero. Francis McDonald is an excellent villain, and the ever-present Hal Taliaferro is good as Baxter, one of his henchmen. Yakima Canutt is listed as second unit director, so you can bet he either did some of the stunts or at least set them up.
And by the way, can someone tell me how the bad guys can do hand-to-hand combat with the Black Whip and not realize there's a woman under that costume?

Zorro's Black Whip(1944)With Linda Stirling is a (Classic.)The Black Whip inspired me and hundreds of other kids in Trenton.NJ. and surrounding areas in the mid 1940s.It showed at a theater called the Riottoe, later came to be called the Ranch. 11 Pennington Ave, Trenton.NJ. For kids under twelve a nickel over twelve a dime.We never related the Black Whip with Zorro.I am sixty five and I was seven when I first saw the Black Whip, fifty eight years ago and today I still would like to see Zorro's Black Whip. The theater was demolished in 2001.
Linda Sterling at her best.......2001-12-23
This is among the best of the western serials. It doesn't really follow the Zorro tradition either storywise or in geographical setting. But it has some of the best western serial action you'll find. As far as having a female Zorro type character, why not? Hey, Linda does quite well for herself as a dashing heroine. And the minor characters, such as the newspaper editor, add much to the fun. This is for enjoyment and not for nitpicking.
