Editorial Review:

Robert Duvall plays a veteran street cop assigned to a Los Angeles gang unit. He takes a headstrong young cop (Sean Penn) under his wing as a partner and shows him the ropes on Watts's mean streets. Penn soon realizes that his testosterone-fueled ways and hair-trigger temper won't get him very far when dealing with the gang-ridden neighborhoods of L.A. Colors is a landmark movie in several respects: it helped bring director Dennis Hopper back into the spotlight after years of self-induced obscurity. Its success at the box office forced Los Angeles's gang problems into the public consciousness and prefigured the next wave of "hood" movies (Boyz N the Hood, Menace II Society, New Jack City) by several years. Though the late-'80s milieu is a bit dated, Colors is still a vivid, absorbing film. Hopper and screenwriter Michael Schiffer give all the characters a very human dimension and go to great lengths to show gang life from both the cops' and the gangsters' points of view. Wisely, they stir in elements of the cop drama, buddy movie, and action genres, leavened with a bit of humor here and there, while keeping a social conscience. Duvall is excellent as always, as the sympathetic cop, and Penn brings a great deal of depth to what could be an unlikable character. Violent, unsettling, and highly recommended. --Jerry Renshaw

The Baby Van Gogh video takes children on a vivid voyage of discovery, accented by delightful poetry. With Baby Van Gogh, little ones discover a vibrant rainbow of colors through art, music and poetry.

Amazon.com essential video

The Baby Einstein Company's "video board books" were designed as music-focused developmental tools to stimulate babies' brains (prompted by research proving that exposure to classical melodies can improve verbal ability, spatial intelligence, creativity, and memory in youngsters). Now the company is expanding into other art forms, including color and art. The idea remains the same--taking bold, beautiful objects (toys, puppets, nature scenes) and setting them to fun renditions of classical music (their recordings are easily the best in the crowded field of child development). A new puppet--Vincent Van Goat--introduces the six primary colors and associates them with Van Gogh's paintings--"The Starry Night" for blue, "Wheat Fields with Reaper" for yellow. The only misstep is the poetry written and read by creator Julie Aigner-Clark, which is strongly reminiscent of Dr. Seuss's My Many Colored Days.

The company suggests the program is for toddlers between the ages of 1 and 4. Harsh sounds between segments--such as balloons popping and tires screeching--will draw the attention of youngsters but will probably render the video inappropriate for babes in arms. The video can be purchased by itself or with a beautifully produced 28-page book featuring Van Gogh's paintings, screen shots from the video, and Clark's poems. The combination set may be the best way to engage 3- and 4-year-olds' interest; they can follow along in the text while watching the video. Music includes "The William Tell Overture," "The Blue Danube," "Bolero," and Brahms's "Lullaby." The video also provides information on the cool toys seen in the ending "Toy Chest" segment. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Excellent! .......2007-05-30

I'm a big fan of Van Gogh's work so it was exciting for me to introduce this Baby Einstein DVD to my 11 month old daughter. She loves all the Baby Einstein DVD's and this one is no exception. The puppets are her favorite and they appear often.
As an adult, I love the poems, seeing van Gogh's work, the music (Ravel's Bolero) and the sheer joy it provides me daughter.

1 out of 5 stars Baby Einstein DVDs Are Some of Worst Baby DVSs! .......2007-03-27

I have bought 30+ baby/infant DVDS from different production companies, such as the "So Smart" series, the "Brainy Baby" series, the "Your Baby Can Read!" series, and the Nite Light ABC DVD. Baby Einstein DVDs are the lowest in quality, cheap toy props, boring music, nothing stimulating. I would recommend the So Smart DVDs and the Brainy Baby DVDs. Your Baby Can Read! are OK, not very high tech, but it could work.

5 out of 5 stars Gotta Love It!.......2007-03-20

I was a little skeptical of all this Baby Einstein stuff at first... but then I saw the "Van Gogh" DVD... myself being a HUGE Van Gogh fan... I bought my 9 month old daughter this DVD and it is wonderful! She stands at the tv and bats at it, and laughs and its a GREAT time! I highly recommend this product!

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-03-08

My daughter at about 8 months old was always so into this DVD, it was her favorite thing to relax her and make her happy!! we could never believe the effect it had on her. Somehow the DVD broke and it was a few months before we replaced it so now her favorite is Baby's First Moves!! I reccomend this and many Baby Einstein videos for your littles ones!

Fantastical writer Gary Ross (Big, Dave) makes an auspicious directorial debut with this inspired and oddly touching comedy about two '90s kids (Tobey Maguire and Reese Witherspoon) thrust into the black-and-white TV world of Pleasantville, a Leave It to Beaver-style sitcom complete with picket fences, corner malt shop, and warm chocolate chip cookies. When a somewhat unusual remote control (provided by repairman Don Knotts) transports them from the jaded real world to G-rated TV land, Maguire and Witherspoon are forced to play along as Bud and Mary Sue, the obedient children of George and Betty Parker (William H. Macy and Joan Allen). Maguire, an obsessive Pleasantville devotee, understands the need for not toppling the natural balance of things; Witherspoon, on the other hand, starts shaking the town up, most notably when she takes basketball stud Skip (Paul Walker) up to Lover's Lane for some modern-day fun and games. Soon enough, Pleasantville's teens are discovering sex along with--gasp!--rock & roll, free thinking, and soul-changing Technicolor. Filled with delightful and shrewd details about sitcom life (no toilets, no double beds, only two streets in the town), Pleasantville is a joy to watch, not only for its comedy but for the groundbreaking visual effects and astonishing production design as the town gradually transforms from crisp black and white to glorious color. Ross does tip his hand a bit about halfway through the film, obscuring the movie's basic message of the unpredictability of life with overloaded and obvious symbolism, as the black-and-white denizens of the town gang up on the "coloreds" and impose rules of conduct to keep their strait-laced town laced up. Still, the characterizations from the phenomenal cast--especially repressed housewife Allen and soda-shop owner Jeff Daniels, doing some of their best work ever--will keep you emotionally invested in the film's outcome, and waiting to see Pleasantville in all its final Technicolor glory. --Mark Englehart

2 out of 5 stars Things are so much better now.......2007-06-30

All the positive comments from folks on this blatantly propagandistic film reflect their relief that those bad old 1950s (of which they know virtually nothing) are gone and targeted for terminal mockery, since things are so much better now, what with one out of five babies aborted, a majority of children born out of wedlock, and drug abuse and violence the major concerns of high-school-age kids, instead of all the poodle skirts and silliness of Pleasantville.

Wake up and smell the Prozac, lemmings: Technicolor-land is worse than Pleasantville, and no amount of clever revisionism is going to change it.

This film is a mendacious little piece of half-ignorant fantasy, and thus nearly perfect entertainment for most contemporary movie-goers, who can't even find Asia on a map, and had to have the SAT dumbed-down to jumpstart their self-esteem.

2 out of 5 stars "Honey, I'm home!" (The 50s meet the New Millennium).......2007-06-26

Teen twins David and Jennifer (Tobey Maguire, Reese Witherspoon) are very different: Jennifer is quite the wild child while David's passion is watching re-runs of the 50s TV sitcom "Pleasantville." One night, the kids are magically whisked right into Pleasantville - a swell little town where the fire department only rescues cats in trees, books are as blank as the foks' minds, and everything is in black and white. David loves it there, but Jennifer starts changing things when she takes her boyfriend up to Lover's Lane for a lot more than hand-holding. Gradually people start seeing things in color, then it rains real rain, and *gasp* dinner isn't on the table at six o'clock.

I'd seen bits and pieces of "Pleasantville" on TV and liked it, but after watching the entire movie, I have to say it left me confused, angry, and disappointed. The point of the movie - that sexual promiscuity is the key to enlightenment - is a sad comment on our times. Maguire and Witherspoon are perfectly cast and give excellent performances, but the script ridicules wholesomeness and condemns morality. I think it's sad that old-fashioned values are labeled not only corny, but wrong. I did enjoy the photography changing slowly from black and white to color, but I cannot recommend the movie.

4 out of 5 stars Exactly what I expected..........2007-05-14

This movie is great! I needed it for my classroom and it was available and mailed to me within a week.

5 out of 5 stars Pleasantville - One of my favorite films.......2007-04-30

I love this film. It has a sweetness, a wistfulness, about it that is so compelling, yet explores many complex human issues, including individual rights. The writing is fabulous - so when I read that the writer of "Pleasantville" is the same man who wrote "Big", it all made clicked. This movie received so little notice that when I loan it to friends their reply is always the same: why didn't I know about this great movie?

5 out of 5 stars More than a "Liberal" point of view.......2007-04-14

A wonderful movie. One of those rare comedies that manages to transition into a thought provoking gem. Some reviewers take it to task for having a "liberal" slant, but I think that misses the mark. The characters in this film don't become "colorized" because they throw off a conservative point of view. They become colorized because they blossom into fully realized human beings. Bud makes the transition when he comes to his mother's defense, Jennifer when she passes up a night on the town in favor of a good book, and George when he admits that he loves his wife. It's not about liberal and conservative values, it's about accepting change and personal growth. It's about facing your fears and being a better person for doing so.

Preschool fundamentals--including shapes, colors, and the alphabet--are the focus of this one-hour program set in the after-school learning center familiar to viewers of Barney & Friends. Today, everyone is preparing for an art show, which provides plenty of scope for Barney's gentle tutorials on circles, squares, reds, and blues, while he incorporates beloved songs such as "Mister Sun." Viewers will be inspired by the students' art projects (which are easily replicated at home) as well as the lesson on mixing colors to create new hues. Then it's off to Baby Bop's tea party, a perfect segue into the realm of ABC's. As Baby Bop learns to spell her name, there are plenty of rhyming games and alphabet songs to incite audience participation. While lacking the originality of some of Barney's earlier music videos, there is no denying this lineup of merry songs and feel-good familiarity make this a cozy stroll into Barney's world. Like most adults and parents, I can't stand Barney. In fact, I almost hate him. Wow, that's big for someone nicknamed "nice girl". I don't like to let my kids watch TV or videos much; but, there are times when they are just making me pull my hair out and I can't get anything done.

Enter Barney. I throw in his videos or DVDs and POOF, instant quiet. My 2 and 4 year olds just sit there. They don't fight, they don't push, they just stare at the TV, mesmerized and happy. It's like they suddenly joined a cult. God bless Barney!

Even though one can view each segment of Krzysztof Kieslowski's Three Colors trilogy on its own, it seems absurd to do so; why buy the slacks instead of the entire suit? Created by Kieslowski and his writing partner Krzysztof Piesiewicz for France's bicentennial, the titles--and the themes of the films--come from the three colors of the French flag representing liberty, equality, and fraternity. Blue examines liberation through the eyes of a woman (Juliette Binoche) who loses her husband and daughter in an auto accident, and solemnly starts anew. White is an ironic comedy about a befuddled Polish husband (Zbigniew Zamachowski) who takes an odd path of revenge against his ex-wife (Julie Delpy). A Swiss model (Irène Jacob) strikes up a friendship with a retired judge (Jean-Louis Trintignant) who eavesdrops on his neighbors in Red. The trilogy is a snapshot of European life at a time of reconstruction after the Cold War, reflected through Kieslowski's moralist view of human nature and illumined by each title's palate color.

The DVD set has numerous extras spread throughout the three discs; the end result is a superior collection. Each disc has a short retrospective, culled together from new interviews with Kieslowski's crew, plus film critic Geoff Andrew, biographer Annette Insdorf (who also does the commentaries), and fellow Polish director Ageniska Holland. Producer Marin Karmitz also reminisces about the experience. There's an exceptional effort to show the magic of Kieslowski (who died two years after the trilogy) through a discussion of his various career phases, interviews with the three lead actresses, four student films, and archival materials including simple--and wonderful--glimpses of the director at work. Excellent insight is also provided by Dominique Rabourdin's filmed "cinema lessons" with Kieslowski. Without viewing any of his other films, this set illustrates the uniqueness of Kieslowski. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars For those who love movies ........2007-05-07

Each film can stand alone as a success in its own right , but as a trilogy they reach a level which few directors have reached before . It is easy to go into detail about every aspect of the writing , acting , directing and production values , but these films should be view without any preconceptions and enjoyed as stories well told with interlocking themes which hold the viewers attention until the last frame .
Buy and enjoy !

5 out of 5 stars Colors - spelt Colours.......2007-02-09

Three tales set in different circumstances. A kind of Film Noir of personal relationships with life, loves, work and sex. In point of fact - the trails and tribulations of someone else's lives. What the French are good at - philosophising about stains on a bathroom towel.

Some of the nuance is lost in the sub-titles.

Nonetheless, these three films are well worth watching. Great stuff. Have some tissues standing by and a good bottle of malt whiskey to boot. The journeys take you to tears and highs.

5 out of 5 stars Why?.......2007-01-13

Why is there a 7th person on the wreched yacht at the end? Who is this person? What is their importance to the overall story arc? I don't understand why there are 7 people, and not just the 6 main characters...

Someone please explain, I have looked everywhere for a reason and have found none...

4 out of 5 stars White is one of the best movies I've ever seen.......2007-01-05

This is a great set of films. Blue tends to drag on a bit, but the other two blew me away. White is really good. The movies don't really correlate between each other, but the end of Red shows a little tie in between all of them. Great movie collection in general.

5 out of 5 stars Great films, but..........2006-12-23

These films are, of course, beyond reproach and I'm sure the supplementary materials are very worthwhile, but... having just watched Blue, I found myself hugely distracted by the size, colour and placing of the subtitles. Most of the time they were over the actors' mouths (and I'm not averse to seeing Juliette Binoche's mouth).

Having complained about subtitles, I'm now going to complain about their absence. Crucially, in the magnificent montage that concludes the film, when Julie's overwhelming new piece of music is finally heard in its entirety, the subtitles don't even bother conveying the words (from 1 Corinthians 13) that accompany the chorus.

These are important thematically ('If I speak in the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love...') and are anticipated in earlier dialogue ('Do you know what words the chorus will sing?'). The impact is diminished by excluding them, even if it means that you can see the visual glory of the montage without there being writing all over it!

My Artificial Eye VHS tape in the 90s got this right. Shame on Miramax for getting it wrong.

5 stars for the film, nevertheless.

If you've been around babies in the last few years, you've seen these newfangled toys that are abstract in color (or just black, white, and red) and make curious, crunching noises. Studies have shown that these types of toys stimulate newborns, expanding the capacity of their little sponge-like minds. That concept comes to the video age in Baby Einstein. This 30-minute tape is called a "video board book" and the creators instruct parents of 1- to 18-month-olds to use it that way: huddle around the TV often pointing out objects and interacting with the child as you would with a book. Bright toys, patterns, blocks, and the like move across the screen accompanied by natural sounds, music, and voices. English, Japanese, Russian, German, and other languages are heard telling nursery rhymes or counting to 20. Now the creators don't expect your baby to recite "Humpty Dumpty" in Spanish by the end of the tape, but, as they state in the introduction, hearing different languages invigorates a baby's mind. These educators went on to combine classical music with their program on Baby Mozart and Baby Bach. --Doug Thomas

5 out of 5 stars Baby Einstein - Language Nursery, Just Tremendous.......2007-06-03

Baby Einstein is a wonderful line of videos to help aid in your child's development. Get them off to a very good start with these videos, and this special one, Baby Einstein - Language Nursery. Get them well on the way to a successful future now! Don't wait!

4 out of 5 stars Great idea, well presented--KEEP DOORS OPEN FOR YOUR BABY.......2007-05-29

As other reviewers have mentioned, this is NOT a language-learning program. Your child will not learn any of the languages presented in the video by watching this, not is s/he likely to be "smarter" for the experience.

What you ARE doing is keeping doors open for future language learning. Remember, this video is made for infants. Beore 6 months of age, infants are able to hear all phonemes (basically, sounds) in any language in the world. After that critical age (and note how young it is!), babies begin to lose this ability.

So no, your baby Einstein, haha, will not learn German from this video. But should he decide to learn it later on, and you continue to expose him to the sounds now and then, he'll have the mental tools to learn to speak accentless German.

Note: I have a master's from Georgetown University in Spanish Linguistics, as well as my own 4 month old son. Though I have studied the documentation for these claims about critical periods for language learning, I always had my secret doubts about what infants really knew. I can tell you from personal experience now that my son prefers people speaking English and Spanish to any other lanugage. Even when he's crying, when the English or Spanish parts of the video come on, he stops and looks at the TV, but does not do this for any of the other lanugages! I'm astonished.

5 out of 5 stars My son LOVES this DVD.......2007-03-29

My son has LOVED this DVD since he was one month old and now he is 18 months. At such a young age, babies are captivated by certain images and sounds, and this DVD has it all. I don't feel it deserves the bad reviews parents give. If babies could vote they would give it a 5 star all the way!!

5 out of 5 stars this is a great dvd for your BABY - not for ADULTS, folks. Duh. .......2007-03-22

I agree with a previous reviewer who stated that the negative reviews of this DVD are from parents/caregivers who are evaluating it on their own enjoyment and/or understanding of it. Of course it's going to be boring or confusing to an adult or even to an older baby. The point of the Language Nursery video ISN'T to teach an infant how to speak the languages that are used on it...it's just supposed to expose them to the different sounds being spoken. The concept here is the same as when you read your child a book or play a DVD for them in English - exposure to the different sounds used to communicate = stimulation/development. That said, I don't think any of the Baby Einstein DVDs actually encourage development at all. That's why the AAP recommends no TV viewing till they're at least 2. These DVDs are nothing but a quick distraction for when you have to have 2 hands to fold laundry or mix their cereal up. Period. This is my daughter's favorite B.E. title, we have a few others. The gentle pictures and music are something she is absolutely glued to the entire time. And that allows me to get something else done for 20 minutes. If you're looking for this DVD to accomplish something else, you're going to be disappointed. I haven't seen one baby yet who is at least 1 month old who doesn't like this one, and hopefully that's endorsement enough. We're at 6 months and she still loves it.

Joe and his friend Blue tackle the preschool basics of circles, rectangles, even trapezoids while sorting through Blue's hints as to where she would like most to see more shapes in "Shape Searchers." If the clues cash register, cart, and food don't add up for you, the kid chorus will help you out. The second episode finds the pair in their backyard making a "portrait of pals," a painting of their many-colored friends. But they only have primary colors, so in order to paint Orange Kitten, for instance, they have to mix red and yellow. Joe makes the most of this opportunity for a color lesson with the assistance of Shovel, who turns out to be a superb artist without the help of a brush. Who knew? (Ages 2 to 6) --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars It's great episod !!.......2007-06-18

One of the best episod in Blue's clue's! I have 2 same dvd, one in play in car, the other one at home. They teaches colors and "Colors everywhere song is leaning how to mix the colors. Children easy to learn colors with song. I love this episod.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Learning.......2006-08-05

My son is two and has learned so much from this DVD. He enjoys mixing his own colors now and knows just which colors to put together to get a new color. And he's learned new shapes that he didn't know before (and it's just cute to hear him try and say "trapezoid"). As with any show my child watches, I watch with him and we talk about it all. He learns so much more that way. The fact that he enjoys the show makes it fun for both of us.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Blue's Clues ever!.......2006-08-01

This one is definitely one of the most played ever in our house - it entertains and teaches color and shape contents alike with fun songs, games and the usual Blue's Clues clue hunt.
If you're not sure whether this series is for your toddler - go ahead and get this one. The colors are not just the regular blue, yellow and red but wonderful shades like chartreuse and aquamarine :-D
As I always watch every video with my kids at least for the first time I highly recommend this one as one of my all time favorites out of the Blue's Clues series and general childrens videos as well.

5 out of 5 stars Very Educational and Palatable for adults.......2006-07-02

These Blue's Clues videos are very educational. They are very fun and very gentle for young children. They are appropriate for ages about 18 months to about 3.

My young girl who is 5 sometimes will watch them with her little brother age 3, but it is not her favorite video any more and she knows all the answers now.

This one talks about shapes and colors and teaches a variety of shapes and colors in a pleasing, fun way. It encourages children to shout out answers, look for clues and use their thinking skills to solve problems all while teaching them about colors and shapes. This video also teaches colors not normally taught and how to mix other colors to get new colors. It also teaches different shapes than ones you might expect (polygon).

Well worth the money.
Enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars It's helping my child to talk.......2006-06-26

These shows are designed to be repeated once a day for a week before showing another episode. That repetition is what helps the children learn the topics covered. I have a two-year-old boy whose speech is a little behind. After watching Blue's Clues for about two weeks, his confidence with speech and his vocabulary are improving daily.

The girl with the striped moonboots and royal-blue epaulets is back from the 1980s to save the world for a new generation of young viewers. This time the gal, her rainbow-tailed horse Starlite, and her sidekick sprite Twink must face down a selfish princess who has stolen the biggest diamond in the universe, preventing light from reaching the world, and sending earth into a neverending winter. (Don't try to justify the plot from a scientific standpoint.) The rerelease of this 1985 production marks the relaunching of the Rainbow Brite franchise, following the successful returns of other '80s era cartoon characters like Care Bears and My Little Pony. Nostalgic young parents will revel in the big hair and big shoulders, and little ones will just enjoy the pretty horses and the colors. This 85-minute movie may also have some appeal to young males as the secondary hero is a boy with a robotic horse. (Ages 3 and older) --Kimberly Heinrichs

5 out of 5 stars I'm a guy and I liked her, does this make me a freak?.......2006-08-30

I can't say honestly how I came to know of Rainbow Brite because I just don't remember. All I remember is they were showing this movie on the disney channel once and that was it for me, I had the biggest crush on her as a kid so i'd watch this movie every chance I got. I'm 24 years old now and my crush/love/infatuation with her was restarted this past January, and when I heard that this movie was released on DVD I was stoked, I'd definitely reccomend it for the little ones though.

5 out of 5 stars AMAZON DISSAPPOINTS AGAIN.......2006-08-07

This was the first movie I ever went to, at the age of 5. I used to have colouring books, and really love the whole concept of Rainbow brite's quest of bringing beauty and happiness to the world.
I ordered this in May and am still waiting for it. I am really disappointed with the delivery and site on this one. The site has stated it has 6 copies of this but am still wondering if they have any at all....I wouldn't bother with ordering this one and would definitely be looking at other websites after this.

3 out of 5 stars FALSE ADVERTISING.......2006-07-18

i loved this movie as a child, but ever since i ordered it in decemeber, i am still waiting for and keep approving delays in my order - almost 8 months later. i'm getting pretty upset with amazon for advertising something on their website, that they cannot provide. don't bother ordering this dvd from amazon unless you like approving delays on your order.

****UPDATE****
i finally ordered one off ebay, and it arrived four days later. thanks ebay!

5 out of 5 stars Love the Movie - Don't Love Waiting For It.......2006-07-07

I am in the same boat as everyone else: I love this movie and was ESTATIC to see it was available on DVD. I am just still waiting for it through amazon. I ordered the movie on May 16, 2006 and it is now July 6, 2006 and still no movie. I am NOT happy. I am disappointed in Amazon for advertising a 1 to 3 week delivery period. That is a complete lie and would recommend to anyone purchasing this movie to click on the the "new & used" link, or to use eBay if they can.

Aside from the ordering conflict- the movie itself is wonderful and I am so HAPPY to read that I am NOT the only adult (23 years old) who is in search of a classic! YOU GO RAINBOW BRITE!!

3 out of 5 stars A rainbow trip for 80s fans........2006-06-26

As the only Rainbow Brite title available on DVD, I'll take what I can get. Rainbow is surprising adventurous and fearless -- and much less cloyingly sweet than I remember. Think of her as "Baby She-Ra"!

This movie feels like it was supposed to attract boys to the franchise as well. It introduces a new male lead, Krys and his Knight Rider-esque horse, On-X. This movie also has more robots, monsters, and scary lizard people than you would expect from a movie aimed at young girls. And thankfully, there is only one musical number at the beginning of the movie.

The animation is crisp and clean. The transfer is surprisingly vivid for a 20 year old movie. This may have been many viewer's first exposure to anime, as this beat Transformers: The Movie to the theaters by a year. And Akira wasn't released until 1988. The high detail/low frame rate is a signature of Japanese animation. And this has the same production values of mid-80s anime.

Like many 80s children cartoons, character motivation and plot aren't always coherant. It's never explained why the Princess wants all these jewels. (where are her parents, anyway?) There are some funny scenes involving her and her pet gemstone she drags around everywhere. Might be a little scary for very young children. But I think it's a fun movie for nostalgia-hungry Gen Xer's as well as young children of today.

2 out of 5 stars hopper's coppers.......2007-06-11

maybe if it had been filmed 15 or 20 years earlier, this dennis hopper directed movie would have seemed revelatory; however, by the time it was made, we had already lived thru several wambaugh books (& adaptations), not to mention "hill street blues". robert duvall and sean penn turn in adequate work as the grizzled vet and the callow tyro patrolling the sinister ghetto streets, but the movie never rises above pedestrian.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best gangster flicks ever........2007-01-31

If you didn't know it, Colors is one of the reasons why Crips & Bloods are so wide spread on the east coast. I rank it as one of the most realistic films about gang life on the west coast. The contrast between the police officers and the gangsters is a strong one. The police are shown to be a gang of their own. The movie centers on two police officers in the pd gang unit, trying to survive, make a change and get along with eachother. Colors is a must see, and if you're a crime movie buff, this film belongs in your collection. It's heaps better than Blood In, Blood Out, and focuses more on the human side of street thugs and police officers. 5 stars, nothing less!

3 out of 5 stars review of colors.......2007-01-04

better than average cops and robbers movie. was given quite of bit of importance that i don't think was deserved, when it was released. well acted movie, with top stars, including Sean Penn (not one of my favorites).i don't know if the writing was the downfall of the movie, or if the film was not put together very well in the cutting room as i suspect. while you watch the movie, you may notice how it seems to jump around a bit (never seemed to have a clear story line), and certain characters are not fleshed out. the best character in the movie is the older police officer played by robert duvall. as much as i hate to admit it, sean penn does justice to the young, gung ho, and vain officer who Duvall's character tries to teach. very good soundtrack, and the opening credits (with Duvall and Penn driving through downtown LA in and unmarked police car) is great. not a great movie, but a good movie that could have been better with some work. a good watch if you like police dramas.

5 out of 5 stars Great acting.......2006-07-26

Wonderful, gritty acting from all characters. IMHO, Duval gives the greatest, most moving "death scene" of all time in this film. Almost 20 years on, it still haunts me.

4 out of 5 stars Colors review.......2006-03-07

I liked this movie when i first saw it and i seen it about 10 times... i like to watch any movie that involves gangs (especially bloods & crips) so i can learn from them...

If you're looking or are just a collector like me of gang movies... you may not want this one in your collection... becuase to me, it doesn't show enough Bloods & Crips in it.... the characters are fictional....there are some minor gangs in it as well called The White Fences (Latino/Hispanic gang - i've never heard of this gang, so i don't know if they are true or not.).

The actors who play the gang members of the White Fences are good actors though... i think they are better then Don Cheadle and Wayans who play Crip members... this movie centers more on White Fence and their rivalry w/ Crips... there's not too much focus on Bloods in here... it also more focuses on Sean Penn's character and Robert Duvall too (good cop/bad cop), and Penn on how he falls in love w/ a former gangmember woman in the White Fence gang.

Colors is a good watch...i just wish it had more gang focus in it...and more gang sets (chapters, i.e. Eight Tray Gangsters, Hoover, etc...) If you're looking for a good gang buy, buy the book "Monster" by Sanyika Shakur a.k.a. Monster Kody Scott, or "Do Or Die" by Leon Bing. Those 2 books far surpasses this movie...

I bought this for my son because he just loves Bear in the Big Blue House. Since he is so fascinated with Bear, I bought this video to help him learn his shapes and colors. He is only 1 1/2 but learns quick. Great DVD to help children learn.

5 out of 5 stars Henson's Done It Again!.......2006-07-06

My son, Daniel, saw Bear for the first time when he was 13 months and we took a trip to Disney World (Playhouse Disney at Disney / MGM). Instantly, he was in love. We started recording Bear in the Big Blue House on our TiVo as soon as we got home and, once we realized he really loved the show, bought a couple of DVDs (since we were getting tired of watching the same 4 episodes over and over again). This is a GREAT series that, while explaining things to kids isn't talking down to them so parents aren't sickened by the sweetness quality. My husband and I enjoy watching these almost as much as Daniel.

Thank you Henson Productions for bringing yet another family-friendly series into our lives!

Don't be concerned that this video doesn't have familiar characters on the cover (no purple dinos, no brightly colored space alien babies). This proven series of colorful musical videos is a winner, and the latest, Baby Songs ABC, 123 is no exception. Designed for toddlers to 2- to 6-year-olds, this video combines color and movement--and, importantly, other children--to help young viewers remember their numbers and the alphabet. Children's music writer Hap Palmer has provided songs that are genuinely catchy and, like the classic "ABC" song, which helped nearly every English-speaking child learn the alphabet, kids are learning as they're singing. Palmer specializes in purposeful but engaging rhyme and alliteration to encourage kids to sing along, sing on their own, and prepare for reading skills.

Mostly nonprecocious children highlight each segment, often dressed alike in brightly colored garb. Featured songs include "Alphabet in Motion," "Tap Your Sticks," "Shapes That Surround You," "Colors in Motion," "We Are All Alike," "Bean Bag Alphabet Rag" (which also helps kids identify body parts), "Jig Along Shapes," and "Numbers Can Tell About You." --N.F. Mendoza

Description

Hap Palmer's happy songs once again entertain and enlighten children, teaching them how to recognize letters, colors, shapes and number concepts in the process.

5 out of 5 stars Triplet Mom's LIFESAVER.......2007-06-03

Ok, to begin with I had no idea who Hap was. I just knew that I didn't want my triplets hooked on broadcast TV stuff that was full of marketing, commercials, etc. So we ordered BabyFirstTV (kinda like HBO for babies) and during the programming they would show these videos. It didn't take long for me to notice that my kids were MESMERIZED by Palmer's music videos. I quickly recognized the prints and hairstyles from my own childhood (80's kid) and went on a search until I found the DVD's here. The kids LOVED them and now that they are almost two they actually ask for them by name. I would HIGHLY recommend these DVD's to anyone who is interested in exposing their children to music, rhyming, social skills, development skills, sillyness and laughter via your DVD player. I am not saying they take the place of actual experiences but they sure do enhance them. You don't know how handy it is to get your triplet toddlers to quickly cooperate and follow instructions by just singing a simple song to them. Anyway, long story short.... WE LOVE HAP PALMER AND THESE DVDs!

4 out of 5 stars Good teaching movie.......2007-05-21

My 21/2 yr. old enjoyed the movie and repeated/imitated what was going on in the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Baby Songs Series is wonderful & quality entertainment!.......2007-01-16

Hap Palmer's Baby Song series is my twins' favorites! I had a VHS of Baby Songs "original" given to me by a cousin when my twins (girl & boy) were about 9 months old. My twins LOVED it from the first viewing! It was 14 yrs old & worn out from many years of usage, so I bought 5 of the DVDs from the series from Amazon & the twins (now 17 months) have enjoyed many many hours of quality entertainment since then. This specific video wasn't one of their favorites until this last month, now it's their favorite over the others. As an added recommendation, the 14 yr old cousin who 'donated' his VHS to my kids still remembers the words to the songs...you can imagine how many times he watched them!

5 out of 5 stars Kids LOVE this video and they learn too!.......2006-07-29

My son starting watching this video at about 20 months and before he was 2 he knew the entire alphabet, could count to 20, knew shapes and colors. He loves the song "Tap Your Sticks" and wakes up every morning asking for "STICKS". I must say, the songs get annoying really fast but kids seem to love them and they learn too! I would highly recommend this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars My son loves it!.......2006-07-14

I bought this DVD for my son (18-month old) after I read some of reviews (good and bad). But I am not sure he is going to like it since nothing on TV really catches his attention. We had one baby einstein dvd, he never watches it more than a minute.

But when I put this one on, he was glued it to it immediately. Since then, every morning and evening, he tells me "DVD, DVD". Now, he watches it everyday. He just enjoyes watching it.

I hope he learns from it as well.
