Anyone want to venture a guess that Keanu Reeves was sorry he passed up Speed 2 to make this turkey? Both a ridiculous suspense piece about a renegade intelligence community and an ill-considered hunk of do-gooder agitprop about alternative energy technology, Chain Reaction makes Reeves and almost everyone else involved look about as dumb as dumb can be. Hollywood's own Little Buddha plays a streetwise lab technician who survives an organized assault on his hydrogen-power project. The FBI assumes he's really a spy working for some foreign power, but the truth is that a CIA offshoot is behind the project's funding. Morgan Freeman plays the ramrod-straight company man who sabotages Keanu's excellent experiment, and Rachel Weisz portrays a physicist who goes on the run with the alleged saboteur. Directed by Andrew Davis (The Fugitive), who seems more interested in seeing how many absurd places he can mount a chase scene than offering a solid clue as to who these characters are and why we should care about them. --Tom Keogh

Poorly written.......2007-06-28
I wanted to like this movie, and it's not a bad adventure, but the story
is full of huge holes and non-sequiters and a lot of the writing is so stale it seems it was written over the weekend.
"Kill them all and let God sort out the innocents".......2007-01-08
Eddie Kasalivich (Keanu Reeves) is first among his colleagues searching for free clean energy to better the world. On the eve of what looks like success a horrible accident (yeah right) dispatches Dr. Alistair Barkley (Nicholas Rudall.)
Eddie complains that it was not an accident so of course everyone knows that Eddie is the culprit assisted by colleagues Dr. Lily Sinclair (Rachel Weisz), and Lu Chen (Tzi Ma). While his employer Paul Shannon (Morgan Freeman) is unshakably not sure (why?).
As with most mysteries the only way to prove his innocence is to find the guilty.
All the parts are well played and the story is just in plausibility. The twists and turns will keep you intrigued until the last. Not too long of a chase scene.
A Very Good Suspense Film: Highly Enjoyable!.......2006-10-17
When I heard friends describing this film, I thought it was going to be terrible. It was not, and in fact it is a very good suspense thriller. I don't believe that "Chain Reaction" is a masterpiece by any stretch of the imagination, however it is an interesting and exciting suspense film nonetheless. Eddie Kasalivich (Keanu Reeves) is a machinist working at a top secret government facility testing a new formula for cheaper and cleaner energy. The bad guys, anyone from Oilmen and others with an interest in seeing this new formula never see's the light of day, conspire to ensure that all traces of its existence disappear. If this new energy reaches the market then oil and its related products will no longer be necessary. With their vital interests at stake, these men will go to any measure to see that this formula is in their hand's alone.
However, Eddie stumbles onto the conspiracy [no spoilers] by mistake when he discovers something at the lab he was working at. Going back to pick up a jacket he left, he stumbles onto what the 'bad guys' have been up to. Taking off on his motorcycle, [the entire lab is rigged with explosives] he tries to outrace the detonation about to occur. The explosion takes out quite a bit of the city. Eddie eventually has everyone from the Chicago police, State police, FBI, Justice Department, and of course the 'bad guys after him. Fred Ward gives an outstanding performance as an agent with the Justice Department who believes Eddie did not do it. Also, Paul Shannon (Brian Cox) the bad guy of all bad guys gives a great performance as well. The film is very good, suspenseful, and highly recommended.
not great, but i must say it grew on me.......2006-03-18
when this first came out i thought this was just a failed atempt to make a big action movie. i was less than impressed, but after seeing it a second and third time i have to say it , well mit grew on me. the story is silly , the acting in some places is the pits , and some chases seem to be there just to have a chase, but the cast tries it's best to pull off this mess and they almost make it.
this is a good family action movie that has few cuss words and very little gore,so turn the brain off and just enjoy the ride.
reaction to "chain".......2005-12-18
the first time i saw this movie i really didn't think to much about it, but after a 2nd viewing i have to admit that i did like it more. it's silly and unbeliveable but it is fun and thats the point!! they all try so hard to make the story work and in spite of the holes in the script it works. a good family action movie. for the price it's worth a look!

The Vanishing: It's not unusual for Hollywood to remake European hits. What is unusual is the director of the original getting the chance to helm the new version with an American cast, which is what happened with this film based on an intensely creepy Dutch film of the same name (both directed by George Sluizer). Kiefer Sutherland and Sandra Bullock are on vacation when, while stopped at a crowded rest area, she disappears. He devotes the next several years to discovering what happened to her, ruining his life in the process. When he does get a clue, it leads him to Jeff Bridges, who plays a bizarre and highly organized individual whose motives are almost as strange as he is. Bridges is spooky, but Sluizer ultimately is undone by Hollywood's demand for a happy ending, which makes this film affecting but far less unsettling than the original. --Marshall Fine

A Heartfelt Tale of Finding One's Identity.......2004-08-30
Dear Amazonians,
"The Chain Reaction", starring Johan Paulik, is a sweet story about how a young man comes to accept his homosexuality. For all of us in the gay community, of which I am a proud member, coming to accept our sexuality is a very puzzling and tumultuous period in our lives. So when Johan sets foot in a gay bar for the first time, and feels uncomfortable looking at the barman, we can feel his discomfort.
There is no actual dialog in this film, except for a voice purporting to be Johan's, constantly asking himself if it is all right to have attractions and emotions for other men. As the film progresses, Johan becomes more comfortable with himself, and finally finds himself added to the other characters' "chain" of attraction. This film does not show any "hardcore" sex. If graphic sex is what you are looking for, look elsewhere. However, if you want to see a very believable coming of age film involving gay youth, then I highly recommend this title. I watched this film several years ago, and it led to my own "coming out." As of this writing, I have been out of the closet for over a year, and I owe it, partly at least, to this beautiful production.
I hope you enjoy this The Chain Reaction as much as I did!

ONLY if all you are interested in seeing goodlooking young males. It is not much else...
Not for hardcore fans.......2001-09-09
Johan is hot and you do see him naked, but if you're looking for hardcore action, this is NOT the video for you.
If You Can Afford Only One Movie - Don't Buy This One.......2000-02-23
I was hoping this movie would be either a porn or a documentary. It turned out to be neither. Although I'm an admitted fan of the Bel Ami boys - especially Johan - I was pretty disappointed. It's about as close to an R-Rated gay porn as you can get.
It's trying to be a documentary about a young gay's "struggle with being gay" (Can you say... Cliche?) and it is missing the mark completely. The only dialog in the movie is a British voice using an annoying echo to represent Johan's thoughts. I'm sure even the real Johan is disappointed with the "thoughts" which are more like random ramblings.
If you like looking at naked Bel Ami bodies (presented in the "Playboy Channel" style) and are willing to use ALOT of imagination, this is your film. But be warned, there are much better ways to spend your dollars and see these same bodies doing much more. These are all XXX gay porn stars. This must have been a walk in the park for them.
My advice is not to waste your time or money on this movie.
Overview.......2000-01-10
"Johan, a cute innocent young guy, enters a gay bar for the first time. The bar is quiet and Johan becomes transfixed by the barman... Amazed by his beauty Johan can't take his eyes off him. His trance is broken by the arrival of the barman's young and good looking boyfriend."
"At first he's amazed by their sensuous kissing across the bar and then he's disappointed at his own innocence. Johan contemplates leaving when a gorgeous hooker walks in. Johan, not knowing he's for sale, decides to stay to see if he can attract the guy's attention. Could this be the one... his first man to man sexual experience?"
"This is just the beginning of a chain of desire as Johan experiences heated passion and sexual fulfilment for the first time. Eight gorgeous models by Bel Ami join his in a chain reaction of heated passions."- From Pride Video
