A simply watchable Japanese horror flick.......2007-04-26
Even with a relatively low budget, Japanese horror films such as this one have an abundance of style. "Junk" opens in a familiar way. Well, familiar if you've seen Zombie 3. Pretty much the same goings on here with a few significant differences. When I was first told about this, it was described to me as "the Japanese Zombie 3". Yeah there's the opening scene and a few other things as well but believe me "Junk" is its own entity. The military is behind all of the experiments that led to the incidents (of course) that opened the film and now they need some help to cope before it all gets out of control. They turn to Doctor Nakata. He was originally one of the inspirations for the creation of the serum that brings the dead back to life, called DNX, but with its dangerous properties and the militarise misuse of his creation, he decided to leave it all behind and go for a "normal life."
On the other side of the film, we have four small time crooks don masks and steal over 100 million yen from a classy jewelry store. They've worked out a plan to fence the jewels for cash, courtesy of a big-time yakuza kingpin, at some abandoned military site in the countryside. This is, of course, the same place where the resurrection experiments have been taking place. As we learn in another plot thread, the scientist originally responsible for this whole mess is now being drafted to go back and clean up the mess--by setting off a bomb that will level the building and everything around it. The jewelry deal goes sour, and the four thugs are about to get riddled with bullets when the zombies stagger in. Evidently our gangster friends have not seen enough zombie movies, and so they waste ridiculous amounts of ammo on torso shots.
"Junk" doesn't rise much above delivering the basics--zombies, violence, gore--but I had to smile at a few of the clever moments, as when the "queen zombie" keeps on coming despite having been sliced in half with a shovel. On the minus side, there's a subplot involving a used-car dealer that plays out like a shaggy-dog story, and the English-speaking characters have some of the most wooden dialogue and acting imaginable. It doesn't help that the scientist, who is Japanese, speaks such thickly-accented English that his dialogue is close to incomprehensible. Movies like this are critic-proof. They exist to deliver action, blood, and surprises, and the people who want to see them will see them without me needing to recommend them. That said, I should point out that "Junk" belongs near the bottom of a list of such movies, the sort of thing you only rent after you've already seen/own a couple of classics.
Not bad.......2006-03-24
This really wasn't all that bad it suprised me, The intro is good and really gets the the zombie action quick. Great effort and I recommend renting it first or just buy it.
Classic B horror movie fun!.......2006-01-26
Matthew has already written the defacto review, but being a horror fan, and a zombie horror fan inparticular, I thought I'd add my two cents.
While Junk is not a good movie in the typical sense, it is still a great time, and you will be entertained, assuming this is your cup of tea. This is the type of movie me and my college buddies would cram into a dorm room to watch.
Not only does Junk borrow or pay tribute to Re-Animator, George Romero and Lucio Fulci, it also pays tribue to the Resident Evil videogames in a very classic "Resident Evil" way. If you catch these references Junk is well worth your time. If you're looking for something along the quality of the more well known Ringu or Juon, lower your expectations and you may enjoy it.
Junk does contain some terrible editing, bad acting, gigantic plot holes, wrong references (someone in the crew confused a porshe with a corvette) and at times, cheesy effects. While the gore affects are good, it lacks the frightening intensity of Romero's films. (Taking place totally in broad daylight may have something to do with that.) Being eaten alive is a basic fear going back as far into human history as one can go. What movies like Jaws and Dawn of the Dead do for making people feel afraid, Junk fails to do. It does have some tense moments, just not enough of them.
Ah but not all is lost. What the film does a great job of is giving us a credible heroine to cheer for, and while the editing and production values may be subpar, the director makes up for this with excellent pacing that moves the adventure along. It is a brisk film that doesn't get bogged with with dialogue or plot intricacies. Honestly, it went by a little too fast. I was wishing it was just a little longer because while it is a typical zombie movie with classic zombie rules (shooting the head is the only way to kill them, they shuffle and move slowly while displaying huge feats of strength etc.), the director spins his zombie tale very affectively.
Believe it or not Junk does contain some social commentary, not unlike Romero's films, though obviously they are of a Japanese perspective. I think most may be lost to me because I am American, but I didn't find the references all that deep. But nonetheless I think they are there considering there was really no reason at all to include Americans in the film, and the blame for the zombies is largely pointing at it as an American operation. Perhaps that is how the Japanese see us sometimes. The Americans certainly were "zombie-like" in their acting. :P
Overall I really enjoyed it, and I'd recommend it to any horror fan. It would've been interesting to see what Atsushi Muroga could've done with a bigger budget.
Zombies vs. Yakuza....................2005-09-28
Junk is a Japanese zombie horror film, the film looked cheap and the gore was great but the film was deffinently bad but still fun to watch. A drug called DNX that is developed by a group of scientist looks simular to the serum thats used in re-animator to raise the dead and is also used for a top secret military project, the problem is one of the test subjects a naked Japanese chick escapes and attacks some of the scientists by eating them. Soon a bunch of jewel theives and Yakuza meet up in an abandoned warehouse but what they don't realise is that its the same place where the scientist are conducting there experiments so alot of flesh eating zombies appear. The film has some action scenes along with zombie horror that was done with a trashy european horror style like the lucio fulci films, most of the acting was awfull especialy the scientist who helps out the american soldiers most of the time I couldn't undurstand a word he was saying in english because of his thick Japanese accent. The film was filled with cliches but still I liked it for being a bad low budget gory zombie film that was funny as hell.
"not a bad zombie movie...".......2005-07-29
When it comes to Zombie movies, this is not a bad Zombie movie. Of course I've seen a lot better, but I've also seen a whole lot worse. The Zombies in this movie are the ones I like: slow moving and eating human flesh. So many recent Zombie movies have them running fast and killing people just to kill. And they also have one of my favorite features...brief nudity. Always love that in a Zombie flick. This is a good one to rent.

Falls short.......2006-11-19
The advertisements that prompted me to buy this dvd were 30 second tv type commercials with very lively and entertaining cg, and music. The musical soundtrack on the dvd is incredibly amaturish, distractingly bad, and falls far short of the creativity the stories, animation, and accompanying sound effects attain. This made the dvd all but unwatchable for me. Very disappointing to see this production fall so far short of it's potential.
Absolutely Brilliant........2006-08-12
Fantastic music, animation, story and all. It's not your standard cg series with predictable plots. It's neither morbid or overly zany. The characters although normally never speaking are developed in a very touching way. Like the episode with the heavenly bird. Not going give out a spoiler but lets just say it's real touching and funny development. Eh... its tough explaining why it's good with out giving it away. So just give it a shot. It's really funny and worth every cent.
Wicked Funny.......2006-06-28
This series of animated shorts combines a fun use of computer animation, a quirky, dark sense of humor, and an overall light tone. I would recommend this as a fun item to anyone, not just anime lovers.
Like Reboot Meets Mr. Bean.......2006-03-13
Mr. Stain lives in a slum called Junk Alley with his anthropomorphic cat Palvan. He isn't a homeless person, but his living conditions are still poor. Every episode starts with Stain rooting through a heap of garbage outside his home, and every episode he finds something new and magical. Also of note is that every episode seems to centre around Mr. Stain creating life from what he finds and wrestling with the moral implications of what he's done.
It sounds pretentious, but it isn't. Despite this formula, Mr. Stain is bursting with originality, and the level of style and charm it posesses sets it apart from all other animes, and all other 3D animated cartoons for that matter. It is funny and very, very disturbing, and I don't doubt that everyone who's seen those bonus Mr. Stain episodes on the other FUNimation discs has already gone out and ordered a copy of the entire series.
Highly reccommended.
Excellent Anime for Comedy fans!.......2006-03-10
I know it's very typical for anime series to recive 5 star reviews, but i assure you this series is warrented it. I have had the pleasure of viewing the entire series of Mr. Stain on Junk Alley and can assure you this dvd will not dissapoint. Theese short (5 - 10 min.) episodes are very charming and feature a new character or prop each episode that the story will revolve around. There is absoulutly no diolauge in the show, which forces it to rely on visual, situational humor as well as it's charming characters, which it does exceptionaly well. Also, the lack of dialoge means the humor is mostly simple, clean fun that can be appreciated by all reguardless of age, language, or sex.
This award has won several awards already in Japan and it is easy to see why. I couldn't reccomend a comedy series more highly, both to anime fans as well as non-fans of the genre, and can't wait to see this DVD released stateside.

how to watch this movie.......2007-03-09
I was familiar with this movie from the past, but wanted it on DVD. This movie starts out slow and reading the box first helps to bring the beginning into perspective. It needed a "Star Wars" script at the start and would have been a better film.

In 1962, after having completed only one failed feature, critic turned director Eric Rohmer embarked on an ambitious plan to shoot six films around a common theme and a similar plot. With only limited resources at his disposal, the first two of his Six Moral Tales are short works shot in 16mm black-and-white. "The Girl at the Monceau Bakery" is a 25-minute sketch that sets the basic premise of the series: a young man interested in one woman is briefly attracted to a totally different girl. Shot on the streets of Paris with an easy naturalism and dominated by the young man's voice-over thoughts, it sets the tone of the series with a deft style, unforced humor, and an ironic tone. "Suzanne's Profession" expands to over 50 minutes to explore the awkward triangle between two best friends and a generous, seductive young woman they both shamelessly take advantage of. The men are callow, the women rather exasperating, the talk isn't as enchanting as in later films--and the ending feels, in retrospect, like an early draft of My Night at Maud's with the roles reversed. If his later films are more compelling and assured, the ambiguity of relationships and mercenary behavior of the characters in this early effort reveal a harsh cynicism that later mellowed into a wry irony. --Sean Axmaker

"I know all your vices.".......2004-07-08
"The Girl at the Monceau Bakery/ Suzanne's Career" is an early Eric Rohmer film. Made in the French New Wave era, these two short films should prove interesting to Rohmer fans as they are the first in the Moral Tales Series. The plot in each film depicts a main character facing a moral dilemma. "The Girl at the Monceau Bakery" is the shorter of the two films. It's a simple story--a young Parisian student (Barbet Schroeder) is attracted to a girl he sees daily. She brushes him off. Then he begins to visit a bakery and flirts with a girl who works there. Eventually, he makes a date with this girl, but then has the opportunity to meet the first girl on the same evening. Should he keep his scheduled date with the girl from the bakery or should he go off with the first girl, since he prefers her anyway?
"Suzanne's Career" is the story of two young students--Guillaume and Bertrand. Guillaume gets all the girls, and Bertrand exists in Guillaume's shadow. Guillaume's current girlfriend is a girl named Suzanne, and Guillaume callously drops her after a few weeks. Guillaume is an extremely unpleasant young man, and Bertrand seems to be the much better character. However, as the plot develops, both men use Suzanne hideously. Suzanne is sweet, needy, and rather docile. After dropping Suzanne, Guillaume sees how far he can push her by living off of her generosity. Bertrand knows better, but he goes along with the scheme.
Whereas Rohmer's later films are more dialogue driven, "Suzanne's Career" and "The Girl at the Monceau Bakery" both contain much more narration than dialogue. Both films seem much stiffer and much less natural than Rohmer's later films, and unfortunately, the black and white film was dark and murky in spots. "Suzanne's Career" started a little weakly, but in the final judgment, I preferred this film of the two. Rohmer's great strength is his concentration on character development, and human motivation. Unfortunately, "Suzanne's Career" never really delves into Bertrand's character. Bertrand is used to being the foil for Guillaume's little games, and he resents this. However, Bertrand's complicity is never explored, and the film is weaker as a result. Rohmer fans will enjoy watching this film, but it lacks the sophistication of his later films--displacedhuman
Two Shorts Make Four Stars.......2001-01-26
This DVD encompasses the first two (short) films in Eric Rohmer's Moral Tales series (there are four other films in the series, for a total of six -- the rest are feature length films).
In the first short, The Girl at the Monceau Bakery, a young man spots an attractive girl who is often seen walking by, and decides he will pursue her. His interest in her grows after he gets up the courage to talk to her one day. Suddenly, though, she goes missing from the streets of Paris. As the protagonist walks in search of his infatuation, he begins making habitual stops at a nearby bakery. After a few visits, he begins to notice the young girl working at the bakery, and decides she is pretty. He arrogantly decides he will flirt with her, even ask her out, as an alternate to his lonely searching for the other woman. From the voice-over, it is clear he wants nothing to do with her, at least in the end, but he continues his flirtation. When the Bakery Girl finally agrees to a date, the original woman re-appears, complete with an explanation of why she'd been missing the weeks before. Our young protagonist must then decide whether to go through with the date, or turn his attentions entirely to the first woman. This is an interesting short to watch, but you may find yourself with some questions when it ends. I found it somewhat dated/simplisitic in its treatment of women and dating/relationships.
The second film is much longer, and concerns two young men who meet a pretty young girl in a cafe (Suzanne). As the two get to know Suzanne, they begin to take her affection and generosity for granted. The protagonist's quiet dislike for her grows the more generous she becomes. He doesn't understand why she would let herself be 'treated' so badly, and assumes she is merely a passive woman who doesn't stand up for herself. Blindsided by their own arrogance, the two men fail to see that Suzanne may be holding some cards of her own. She may in fact be in complete control of her 'situation,' and living exactly the way she wants to, just 'like a man.' I liked this film more than the first one, and found myself cheering for Suzanne. The end brought a smile to my face.
The director (Rohmer) is fascinated with the beginning/early stages of relationships, and the choices that are made at that point. Serving as a sort of match-maker for his characters, he foresees One Suitable Mate for his Protagonist, and Only One. However, since he does not always make clear what is driving the Protagonist's choices, we are often left not really knowing the reasons for the Protagonist's depth of feeling (or lack thereof), and how he can be sure that his decision is the Right one. For example, at the end of the first film, the protagonist abruptly decides which of the two women will be best-suited for him for life (marriage). Yet we aren't shown any information about her but her appearance. Is the protagonist so shallow, or is more going on here that I missed? As the FIN abruptly burns onto the screen, you may find yourself sitting for a moment or two, with question-marks in your eyes, in wonder and confusion at the follies of love.
The DVD itself, while it presented no problem, was nothing special. As with the other films in the series, the subtitles were burned into the film itself, and so could not be removed. In Black & White. French Soundtrack and English subtitles. 3 1/2 to 4 stars.

Perfect teaching tool!.......2007-05-12
I bought this to show my high school nutrition class and it was perfect! The students really enjoyed it and it really enhanced my curriculum. As a nutritionist, I loved "the rules" and beleve anyone can improve their health and diet by following the rules in this episode. My favorite scene is when they discover that one of the family members broke the tv limit rule. We all guessed who it was!!!
