Get mindless for awhile with this 1997 disaster flick, starring the La Brea Tar Pits in Los Angeles as a funky place for lava to spew, plus Tommy Lee Jones and Anne Heche as the brave souls who know how to shut off the spout. Director Mick Jackson (The Bodyguard) wastes no time getting to the good stuff--it's happening even before opening credits are over--and neither should anyone in the mood for technical efficiency without the burden of art. --Tom Keogh

The film boasts the best of the Bond title songs (this one sung on a dreamy track by Nancy Sinatra), but the movie itself is one of the weaker ones of the Sean Connery phase of the 007 franchise. The story concerns an effort by the evil organization SPECTRE to start a world war, but the not-so-super villain behind the plot is the awfully civilized Donald Pleasence. The thin script is by Roald Dahl (shouldn't we have expected a better Bond nemesis from the creator of mad genius Willy Wonka?), and direction is by British veteran Lewis Gilbert (Alfie). But the movie can't hold a candle to Dr. No, From Russia with Love, or Goldfinger. --Tom Keogh

3 out of 5 stars Connery's Bond Translates Poorly to Japanese.......2007-07-04

This is the first Bond movie that's actually a bit of a bummer and the fault can be laid directly at the feet of the man who was the first and best of the cinematic Bonds. This was Connery's fifth outing in six years as the ultimate gentleman spy. He was sick of the hoopla and deeply concerned about being typecast. He looks bored and irritable and the white to Japanese transformation sequence is still a low point in the Bond canon. Sort of a jump-the-shark moment as the Bond series has only been occassionally excellent since the mid-sixties. He really should have passed the walther ppk to a new Bond actor. The script was written by Roald Dahl and he probably should have stuck to children's books. Surprisingly tone deaf, extremely wordy but with very few memorable lines. Small characters get surprisingly long speeches. What enjoyement I end up taking away from YOLT is bits and pieces. The volcano lair, Blofeld, the cute Bond girls, little nelly, the beautiful cinematography, the ninja island and the well handled action sequences. Not a bad Bond. After all, they are all fun, one way or the other, but definately middle of the pack for me.

4 out of 5 stars Megabudget Japanese Ken Adam extravaganza........2007-06-15

Of all the classic James Bond films, this is the one I had not seen in the longest time. I remembered this was where the series really lost its spark and went into absurd Austin Powers territory.

Although some of the criticism is still valid, YOLT is actually one hell of a mid-60s Albert Cubby Broccoli affair. For one thing, virtually the entire film takes place in Japan and makes impressive use of many locations, e.g. the ninja training academy is on the lawn of Himeji castle. Ken Adam was given about ten sets to design, one of them simply gargantuan. My opinion is that they are are a far stretch from his finest work but still spectacular. John Barry's music is gorgeous as always, with just the perfect asian influence.

Yet like so many Bonds the film is a pretty jumbled affair, with an on-again off-again plot that never rises much above a simmer. Donald Pleasance is a big letdown as Blofeld, as is his henchman. The romance is non-existent. So, not really a good film by any stretch. But for sheer eye candy it's outstanding. And the DTS sound is incredible.

5 out of 5 stars The one with the hollowed out volcano lair - a fun ride.......2007-04-08

Yes, it's the one with the hollowed out volcano and what a fun ride it is too. It should come as no surprise to anyone that for me (who ranks the earily similar plot-wise TSWLM at #2 of Bond movies and is a fan of Roger Moore's portrayal) that "You Only Live Twice" is high on my list of favorite Connery movies.
It's fun and zany and like a Godzilla movie on steroids Bond is plunged into a kinetic, energized Japan. A country that is reeling from an identity crisis following a humiliating defeat in WWII for the traditional nation and the onslaught of 1960s pop culture of which the Bond phenomenon was a major part.
Connery for his part looks bored and tired with the role and so the film makers understandably have loaded this movie with special effects, martial arts fighting, gimmicks and yes, a hollowed out volcano. All in the hopes that Connery will get lost in the mix and his lack of enthusiasm for the part less evident as the viewers senses are assaulted by a vibrant concoction composed of all the spectacle and wonder that screenwriter Dahl and director Lewis Gilbert could conceive.
The mission seems ripped from the headlines to use an old cliché. The time is the late 1960s and with the US and USSR locked in a race for the dominance of space, the two nations are both having capsules hijacked by some unknown power. Of course in the hyperactive paranoia of the Cold War - each blames the other. But Britain, in its infinite wisdom, stands by their claim that their tracking placed the object (that seized an American rocket) land somewhere in the sea of Japan.
The movie begins with one of my all-time favorite pre-credits sequences. Bond is in bed with an attractive Chinese girl. In what appears to be a double-cross however she pushes a button that sends the bed into the wall before letting a couple of assassins in who pepper the bed with bullet holes. Having the hero "killed off" at the beginning of the movie is a gimmick that has been copied often (and in fact first echos the opening of "From Russia With Love." But Gilbert crafts it expertly.
A solid entry in the Bond series - too light for some, but certainly a lot of fun throughout.

5 out of 5 stars JAMES BONDs Dichotomy of Styles East meets West.......2007-04-04

YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE contained elements of espionage, action, thrills, adventure and science fiction. Looking back it somehow worked loosely when put together yet till this day I can not determine what the cohesive element was. Looking at it closely the film is a real dichotomy of styles. The first hour is excellently filmed and works very well. We get to see James Bond the spy, working with recognition codes, breaking into safes, going under cover and the like. There is an excellently choreographed fight scene between Bond and a sumo wrestler. This is also the first time he developed a good working relationship with a fellow intelligence head, Tiger Tanaka, similar to that of Kerim Bey in FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE. We also see that "M" has absolute confidence in his man. "This is the big one," he tells Bond knowing that 007 is the only one capable of pulling off this assignment. There is also quite a bit of very witty dialog in the first hour of this film. In the first hour the pace is deliberate, but never boring or unentertaining. It ends with Bond flying "Little Nellie," delivered by "Q," into an aerial dogfight with four helicopters. As it moves into the second hour more of the science fiction and fantasy elements start to take center stage. The film starts to look untidy and meanders along till it gets to the excellently filmed battle between Tanaka's ninjas and Blofeld's private army in his Volcano lair. It's not a bad Bond film, but it should have been a lot better. I think the culprit was the editing. Russian and American manned space capsules were being snatched out of orbit by an "intruder missile." Bond had to find the location and the identity of those responsible before World War III breaks out. The filmmakers decided not to surprise us at the end of the film, but instead show us, not Bond, that this "intruder missile" is in fact owned by SPECTRE and is being launched from Blofeld's Volcano lair in Japan. That comes a little past the hour mark. That being the case there was a good opportunity to develop suspense, as Bond has to locate the launch site. When Bond finally does find the volcano he has very little reaction to his discovery. He in fact seems to have come prepared with suction cup kneepads, which he uses to climb upside down and into the volcano. Tanaka shows up with his men, the battle ensues and Bond saves the day. It just could have been done much better considering how well the first half of the film was handled. The massive sets designed by Ken Adam were highly innovative and stylized and are probably the best of the entire series. M's office aboard the submarine, M-1, was also pretty innovative incorporating furniture and decorations from his office from the Ministry of Defense back in London. John Barry wrote a brilliant score. His music for the "Capsule in Space" was eerily ominous. He also incorporated sections of the "James Bond Theme" very effectively subsequent to Henderson's death and the fight in Osato's office. Barry's "Mountains and Sunset" went beautifully with Freddie Young's Cinematography. This and his score for ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE were the last to contain his best action pieces for the series. These were little snippets here and there written to give the action a little more punch. I thought Sean Connery gave some his best performances as James Bond in this film. Bond's scene with Henderson was very good. His repartee with Moneypenney was one of his best. Sean Connery did return as James Bond in DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER but one era had already ended with ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE and a new one would begin with his return.

5 out of 5 stars Only ONE Person We Know Carries This Licence.......2007-04-04

The transfer is much improved with crisper images and increased resolution. The sound is outstanding. As for the movie, the odds have never been greater or the stakes higher. World War Three hangs in the balance of the success or failure of James Bond. This is the `Big One' and it looks every bit of it. We thought all the stops had been pulled out for "Thunderball" but not quite, "Thunderball" was just practice! "Thunderball" was the pinnacle of the James Bond phenomena and rightly so. However, "You Only Live Twice" pushes the envelope continuing in the same vein as "Thunderball." Still, Sean Connery is James Bond, the contemporary hero in today's age of uncertainty. S.P.E.C.T.R.E. continues to harass James Bond by day and disturb his tranquility by night. The script by Roald Dahl, based in-very-little-part on the Ian Fleming novel, is refreshing, imaginative and in some respects innovative. Bond finally comes face to face with Blofeld in the form of Donald Pleasence. I believe there are at least two schools of thought on his portrayal usually in extreme approval or disapproval. In any event, we get a good dose of S.P.E.C.T.R.E.'s usual form of justice that it doles out to its unsuccessful employees the same as we have seen in "From Russia With Love" and "Thunderball." The scene between Osato and Helga Brandt and Blofeld in his incredible lair accompanied by John Barry's haunting score is one of the best in the entire series. In fact there are quite a few good scenes in this film filled with very witty yet intelligent dialogue. This is a step up from "Thunderball" in that respect. One feature perhaps not that noticeable is the extraordinary flow and pace of "You Only Live Twice" or more accurately the reason for that flow and pace. This can be attributed to editing and the film's combination of plotting, action, dialogue and its great visuals and music. I think the contribution of Ken Adam's massive yet simple production designs, John Barry's continuing incredible innovation in scoring, Bob Simmons' incredible stunts and choreography and Sean Connery's perfect portrayal of James Bond make "You Only Live Twice" one of the most memorable of the series. Yes, I thought Connery gave a perfect performance. Connery does not walk through this one. If you separate and examine his performance from the rest of the film I think you will find that it is very credible. Connery gives us a perfect balance of the best of what he brought to the first four films. It is not 100 percent Fleming but is perfect for the cinema version of his creation. For that reason I think many fans find it hard to say they like "Thunderball" over "You Only Live Twice" and visa versa. I think that "Thunderball" has a real Fleming feel to it while Connery though very energetic and captivating approaches that assignment with unusual aplomb. And that is not a bad thing. "Thunderball" is a very beautifully filmed aquatic adventure and John Barry's score melds the whole experience into some type of Fleming aura for the viewer. I think the overall premise of "You Only Live Twice" is so incredible yet brilliantly delivered cinematically that Sean Connery's performance is overlooked.

The first of 1997's volcano disaster movies (the second being Volcano) was arguably the better of the two, but both of them made for passable entertainment with some spectacular special effects to serve as icing on the stale cake. After all, Dante's Peak doesn't pretend to be anything more than an updated variation on a whole catalog of disaster movie clichés. Despite all that, it's reasonably enjoyable. It's an added bonus that the script is just smart enough to allow Pierce Brosnan and Linda Hamilton to play their roles with straight faces, never condescending to the audience of the formulaic story. He's a volcano expert from the U.S. Geological Survey, and she's the mayor of a cozy Washington State town perched beneath a volcano that's about to blow. Telltale signs are everywhere, so evacuation must be carried out immediately. Of course, not everybody's eager to leave, and even some of Brosnan's colleagues think his alarm is premature. This sets the stage for massive ash clouds, rivers of raging mud and molten rock, flattened forests, and death-defying escapes by Brosnan, Hamilton, and some (but not all) of her family, friends, and townsfolk. So what if it's all pretty flaky... and can a four-wheel-drive vehicle travel over fire and molten lava without bursting its tires? Don't ask too many questions, and you'll find Dante's Peak to be (if you'll pardon the pun) a total blast. The Collector's Edition DVD includes a documentary about volcanoes, Getting Close to the Show, in addition to behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive coverage of the creation of special effects, and audio commentary with director Roger Donaldson. --Jeff Shannon

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A Decent Volcano Movie........2007-06-14

An interesting story with its moments. The build up to the eruption was great! All the little momments like the too hot hot springs! Though once the lava starts to roll, the script gets a bit unrealistic. I guess it builds suspense. All in all, a good volcano flick.

3 out of 5 stars Volcanic delight.......2007-05-08

I've always been fascinated by volcanos, and have always like Pierce Brosnan doing his thing on screen also. Linda Hamilton is pretty good, though a little lost at times. The others, I hate to say, were just filler. They were never allowed to really fly, or even be more than scenery. Effects are solid, but overdone in some spots. The lead up to the actual blast is the best half. It's an ok film.

5 out of 5 stars Brosnan's Peak.......2007-05-04

This is the most absorbing film I've ever seen! You have a whole town trying to evacuate and all of them are thinking about Number 1. This is also one of Brosnan's best films - and you don't think about Bond when you're watching it. Tremendous.

5 out of 5 stars Dante's Peak.......2007-01-12

This is a wonderful movie. Unfortunately it came out at a bad time and never got the recognition it should have. It had adventure, suspense, and a lot of action, along with an offbeat love story. It's a great movie for all.

5 out of 5 stars Catastrophe-Action Done Right; A Whopping Great Thrill Ride With Feeling.......2007-01-11

"Dante's Peak" is one of the disaster movies that really brings the genre to a super peak, with a realistic and thrilling earth-shaking (in this case literally) catastrophe, high octane action, glorious cinematography capturing great natural beauty, and high-quality characters and relationships. It is, of course, about a volcano, one of the most powerful forces in nature, and it successfully captures the grandeur and terror of such an event. I've always found volcanoes fascinating - they're terrifically destructive, and of course tragic for the havoc they wreak, both when they're near human habitation and when they're in the 'isolated' wilderness where the other creatures are the sole recipients of their explosive force. And yet they're undeniably beautiful, like a sunset or a howling snowstorm, and they're in fact an essential part of the inner workings of the earth. Also, although there is often a lot of death associated with volcanoes as acre after acre gets burnt up or covered with ash, they're also, paradoxically, major bringers of life. Even extremely barren, infertile lands with usually burst forth with new life within a few years of a volcano, because they bring forth such rich new nutrients in their lava.

"Dante's Peak" is smart by not having the disaster hit five minutes after the opening credits have finished rolling; there have been some movies of this nature over the years that have made just that mistake. This one though is perfectly paced throughout. There is plently of tight build-up and a couple of tragic harbingers of the bigger calamity to come. The action in the latter parts of the movie is explosive and exhilirating, among the best. It's interesting that "Dante's Peak" has managed to position itself as one of the greatest action movies without any real bad guys. There are some unlikable characters - short-sighted, arrogant, condescending - but that's all. They're jerks, but they're not characters who are going to go out and kill somebody. So in this tremendous action movie there's no one shooting at each other, no swordplay, no high-impact kick battles. Don't get me wrong - I love the kind of movies represented by "Lethal Weapon", "Timebomb", "True Lies", "Out Of Time", all that; and I generally even more love the more fantastical, really grand movies like "Superman Returns", "Star Wars", "Lord Of The Rings", "Spider-Man", all that stuff. But it's neat that a movie missing so many of the great staples of action fare has also brought itself up into the cream of the crop.

The visuals of "Dante's Peak" are awesome. The volcanic effects are extremely realistic, and just the natural splendor is great. As mentioned, the cinematography is incredible, although there is admittedly one wonderful shot that was promising to be truly spectacular but gets hampered a bit by the camera being in the wrong angle to capture it all. A very minor quibble. It would also be an extremely minor quibble if one was to spend too much time focusing on the improbably high number of razor-thin escapes by some of the characters. Movie makers Are allowed some artistic licences even in realistic scenarios after all, and besides, in a case where two outcomes are possible but one quite a bit more likely, you don't have to go with the most likely one Every time. You shouldn't also go with the most unlikely every time either or it loses its believability and tension, and "Dante's Peak" doesn't do that. It stays on just the right tip of the balancing scale.

Excellent stuff; for more disaster-oriented greats I also recommend "Deep Impact" and "Titanic".

WHAT DO YOU GIVE A CHILD THAT CANNOT WATCH HIS FAVORITE TV SHOW WHEN HE WANTS. A VIDEO! THIS WAS A HIT WITH MY LITTLE ONE.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointed.......2007-04-23

We have all the the backyardigans DVDs and I cannot praise the earlier other ones enough - five star rating on all of them. However the messages picked up from this one has caused us to remove this video from our children's collection. Throwing tantrums and insisting on your own way are habits we are trying to break our children from not encourage. If you want a excellent DVD for your children try one the earlier ones my kids love them and the over all messages the kids pick up from them are much better.

1 out of 5 stars WORST OF THE BACKYARDIGANS.......2007-04-22

I HARDLY FIND THE BACKYARDIGANS ENTERTAINING, BUT OUR DAUGHTER LOVES THE MUSIC IN THEM. THIS ONE IS ESPECIALLY ANNOYING WITH THE SONG, "WE KNOW WHAT WE WANT. WE KNOW WHAT WE DON'T WANT. SO GET US WHAT WE WANT." WHAT A TERRIBLE MESSAGE FOR KIDS TO LEARN & SING. THE CUSTOMER SERVICE SONG IS JUST AS BAD (I'M THE CUSTOMER, SO GIVE ME WHAT I WANT).

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND CHARLIE & LOLA DVD'S. THEY'RE FUNNY, ENTERTAINING FOR ADULTS TOO & THE BROTHER/SISTER ARE VERY NICE TO EACH OTHER.

5 out of 5 stars Never Grow Tired.......2007-04-03

My mother once told me that whatever name I give my child should better be one I love because I'd be saying it often! Well, the same good motherly advice goes for the TV shows your children watch. I watch the Backyardigans numerous times a day, on DVD, on TIVO, and on live TV and all since my son was 5 months old!

The Backyardigans have my vote for entertainment. Now that my 2 yr old son thinks I am his personal MP3 player, I have to admit, I enjoy singing the songs from the shows. I even have my favorites, but if I were forced to watch a marathon I think I could do it! Invest in the Backyardigans from DVDs to CDs to toys and games and party supplies. They are not just entertaining, but they model how children should socially interact and resolve conflict. No inuendos here- I love them!

5 out of 5 stars Another Great Backyardigans DVD!.......2007-03-22

My son has four Backyardigans videos, the Mission to Mars DVD, and two CD's. We just bought The Legend of the Volcano Sisters a few weeks ago, and, needless to say, this HAS to be one of his favorites!

He has played this DVD over and over again--often singing the songs to himself even when the DVD is off! Speaking of songs, if you love the catchy, clever songs spanning oodles of music styles in this DVD, you'll love both of the Backyardigans CDs. The newest one is Groove to the Music, but it only features one song found on The Legend of the Volcano Sisters DVD: Track 15 "We'll Get You What You Want" featured in the episode of the same name.

Here is a brief synopsis of all four episodes as found on the back of the case:

* The Legend of the Volcano Sisters - The tarantella plays as legendary Luau Brothers Pablo, Tyrone, and Austin try to appease Volcano Sisters Tasha and Uniqua so their volcano doesn't erupt and ruin the big luau! (If you have a little princess in the family--on even "The Queen"!--you'll get a chuckle out of this episode, where the gals never say what they want...but expect the guys to guess!)

* The Swamp Creature - Sixties guitar music rocks the boat as Tour Guides Uniqua and Pablo lure in customers Tasha and Austin with promises of the Swamp Creature. Little do they know, Swamp Creature Tyrone actually exists! (In this funny episode, Uniqua and Pablo try to shyster customers into believing that there's a Swamp Monster--are are surprised to find there actually IS one in the swamp!)

* Horsing Around - Giddy-up to Klezmer music as Cowgirl Uniqua and Jockey Pablo race to find out who's the best horse rider in the west. You won't believe the winner... (Very cute--with a surprise winner!)

* Special Delivery - The Do-Gooders, a tough but good biker gang, rev up to Norteno music to bring a missing mailbag--and their Valentine's Day cards--to nervous Mailman Tyrone!

Because of the last episode, this makes a particularly good DVD for a Valentine's Day gift--but it can be enjoyed anytime!

There aren't many special features, unfortunately--only a Wonder Pets! sneak peek and a Secret Agent dance along. They don't even include a full-size poster like the one included in the Mission to Mars DVD.

Still, you can't beat this 99 minute DVD when it comes to cleverness, musical variety, colorful characters, and great storytelling!

Joe Versus the Volcano is a true early-1990s cult film. This fantasy-comedy was the first pairing of Meg Ryan and Tom Hanks, yet it polarizes viewers like a Blue Velvet or Happiness. As the only directorial effort from John Patrick Shanley (the Oscar-winning writer of Moonstruck), it is something special, and it's hard to resist the film's feather-light heart tugging. Joe Banks is having the life sucked out of him at a dead-end job. Miserable in his gray surroundings with stark fluorescent lighting, Joe dreams of being brave again. A visit to the doctor reveals that he has a "brain cloud." It's fatal, but he'll be fine for a few more months. An eccentric millionaire, Samuel Harvey Graynamore (Lloyd Bridges), hears of Joe's predicament and comes to him with a proposal: The people of the Pacific island of Waponi Woo need a human sacrifice to appease their gods. Why not live like a king for a few weeks, then throw yourself into a volcano? (Graynamore needs a sacrificial victim to offer in exchange for permission to mine the island for a rare mineral.) Joe accepts Graynamore's lavish proposal and on his journey meets three romantic possibilities (all played by Ryan). Joe embraces life; so does the movie. It's packed with smile-inducing supporting performances by Bridges, Ossie Davis, Robert Stack, and Dan Hedaya; playful songs ("Sixteen Tons," "Ol' Man River," Presley's version of "Blue Moon"); and amusing scenes (such as Joe buying luggage). Add the daring, imaginative production design of Bo Welch (Edward Scissorhands), Hanks and Ryan's chemistry, and Georges Delerue's romantic music and you have a film to fall for. --Doug Thomas

Description

Laughs erupt when Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan fall in love and fall in lava in Joe Versus the Volcano, a colorful, stylish laughquake written and directed by Moonstruck Oscar winner John Patrick Shanley. As Joe, Hanks adds to his phenomenal string of successes that includes, Splash, Big and Turner & Hooch. And Meg Ryan follows up her starmaking When Harry Met Sally...with three roles, playing each of the women in Joe's life. When we first meet Joe, he has the white-color blues. Every day is Monday, the boss is always in a bad mood and the cumulative stresses convince Joe he has a terminal condition called a "brain cloud." So when a zany jillionaire pops up and offers him a fleeting taste of the good life, Joe leaps at the chance. All he must do in return is leap into a volcano. But funny things happen on the way from the urban isle of Manhattan to the remote tropical isle of Waponi Woo... Out of the corporate frying pan. Into the fire. 5 out of 5 stars the best of Tom and Meg!.......2007-05-27

oh. how I love this film! Joe is told by his doctor (a quack I might add) that he has a rare disease that will kill him in 6 months. so he decides (via being bribed) to go toss himself into a volcano in exchange for a vacation, and loads of fun. but what he didn't expect to find along the way was Love! and Meg ryan is Ultra Cute in this film and tom hanks is Hilarious and as always very comical in his acting (I laugh every time i watch him being diagnosed with his "New Disease" and then quitting his job! what hilarity buy this film you will not regret it! great for family friends and anyone else! its also cool seeing meg ryan as a redhead blonde and brunette! this movie is a classic like Big!

5 out of 5 stars My favorite movie.......2007-04-07

This movie has become my favorite movie of all time. I have given it a rating of E, which is the highest that I will give to a movie or book. To receive this rating, there has to be substance, meaning, consistency of story and plot, depth, and it must be unforgettable.

I highly recommend this movie to anyone who wants not just entertainment, but a challenge to find the messages this movie is saying to each viewer. There is a connectivity throughout the movie that makes it well worth viewing several times to pick out. I will not go into details, for that would make it too easy and spoil the fun to be had in searching. They are there, words, moments of insight, pictures, and ideas. They are there, find them, and enjoy.

I think the choice of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan was the best choice for this movie. Both do very creditable acting. There is also a lot of frisson between these two characters which adds immeasurably to this movie.

One of the things that you will find in this movie is what simple love is and how important it is. By simple love I mean the power of the touch of hands, the giving of oneself to keep another safe and well, the look within the eyes that says "I care for you". These are all simple things, but powerful too. Hence, their meaning comes across powerfully within the framework of this movie.

I have seen this movie several times and I am still seeing things that connect throughout the movie. This makes it more fun to watch time and again, because you always will find something new missed before. Spielberg is an excellent director and he knows how to tell a story. The story presented in Joe vs the Volcano is done extremely well in this movie. There is much more to it within the movie than just the interplay of the two main characters. In addition, the music adds a depth to this, a surprising depth. I have tried to find the sound track and it is not available. Only 3500 CD's were made and these are gone to those who likewise found it to be something worth keeping.

There are unforgettable scenes throughout the movie too. One in particular I always see in my mind and thoughts. Tom Hanks (Joe)and Meg Ryan are on a raft after the sail boat that Meg was captain of sunk in a storm. Meg suffered a blow to the head and is unconscious so Joe gives her water to keep her well, denying any for himself because he does not know when they will be rescued. About the third night he sees the moon rise. At one point he struggles to stand and it then appears he is holding the moon up with his hands. It is touching, an unforgettable scene. Joe then says:
"Lord, who's name I do not know,
I Thank you for my life.
I forgot... just how big...
Thank you for my life."

My recommendation is to not miss this movie. It is worth the price, and then some, I believe sincerely. You will not forget it, you will find the movie refreshing everytime you see it. And you will find a smile or two on your face, and maybe a tear or two as you understand all the things this movis is saying to you.

Joe

4 out of 5 stars Just a fun movie.......2007-01-10

I missed it in the movies, but after seeing it it on STARS, I knnew I had to have it in my collection !!

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Fairy Tail for Grownups.......2006-12-15

Stuck in the world of the corporate grind ... not sure how to break free ... not sure you can? Well, this wonderful little movie might just inspire you to FIND a way to break out of the "eternal gray" and create a wonderful life for yourself. And even if it doesn't ... it's a lot of fun.

4 out of 5 stars This film works best as a rainy-day appetizer.......2006-12-06

This is a artsy, stylized movie, full of quirky humor and subtle satire. If you love "The Princess Bride" and/or "O! Brother, Where Art Thou?", then you will understand this film. The characterization of personality archetypes (in English, he makes fun of odd people that we all know) is what sticks the most with me, along with Elvis signing Blue Moon and the large moonrise on the ocean.

It has enough adventure in it so that it is not strictly a chick flick, but it strikes a nice balance. I think this is the first paring-up of Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan.

This film works best as a rainy-day appetizer, with hot cocoa and summer sausage. I recommend seeing it between 3:30 and 5:45 at the latest.

4 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-07-02

this is a great collection of weird al 's hilrious videos! it icludes some of his greats including: " Amish Paradise", "eat it" , and "smells like nirvana"

i only wish that "White and Nerdy" could have been included. but i still like it!! :)

4 out of 5 stars "Tonight we're gonna party like it's 1699.".......2007-06-27

This precious DVD is a collection of Weird Al's awesome music videos that were made over the years. Some are better than others, and they are all pretty darn strange in different ways. Inside of the case gives you a list of them and tells you when they were made, trivia, etc. I now only wish there were more of these with some of his catchy polka songs on them, which are quite catchy as any Weird Al fan would know! This DVD is perfect as it is and doesn't really need anything better than what's on it. I personally think that some of his albums need DVDs with music videos {with the exception of Al's latest: Straight Outta Lynwood on the dualdisc}....but this is almost cooler because this would then be several of them put together as one that you can watch AND listen to, rather than watch some, listen to others and only imagine what they may be like if you could watch them. I would still prefer if there were more of his music videos on DVDs like this. Oh well. Anyway, I highly recommend this to anyone who greatly enjoys Weird Al's stuff.

2 out of 5 stars REAGAN BASHING, unfortunately.......2007-05-28

The RIDICULOUS REAGAN BASHING in the x-mas video SOURS the whole experience. Partly because one doesn't expect something that IGNORANT from an otherwise APPARENTLY bright person like Yankovic. As anyone who's the LEAST BIT interested in truth knows, Reagan passionately LOATHED nukes!--read the diaries, EVERY [even LEFTIST] biography, ET AL! Even if Yankovic was truly stupid enough to believe that in the 80's-as an artist, if I had published anything 'slanderous' [!you don't get more SERIOUSLY slanderous than imputing LOVE of war/nukes, much less to a person who passionately LOATHES them!] and it ''turned out'' to be EMPIRICALLY, BLATANTLY OFF-BASE I would re-edit/cut entirely! We must demand the same HONORABLE BEHAVIOUR from Yankovic. To not so do, BESMIRCHES THE ENTIRITY OF YANKOVIC'S CREATIONS! Inl'g this dvd.

5 out of 5 stars Fabulously Funny!.......2007-03-17

If you are a Wierd Al fan you will love this DVD! Spanning from his first tv appearance to his most recent videos it is truly the ultimate colletion....worth every penny.

5 out of 5 stars It's Weird 'Al'.......nuff said.......2007-02-27

It's a ultimate collection of Weird 'Al' music videos that I was lucky enough to find at Wal-Mart for like $13....unfortunately, it includes none of his newer material, but it has all of his videos up to when this was released. a must have for fans of Bob Rivers, Weird 'Al", or Dr. Demento.

4 out of 5 stars Formula disaster movie.......2007-06-04

This movie is a good disaster movie with all the elements of a disaster movie. There are all the stereotype disaster characters form the "I'll ride it out" to the "You are scaring my customers".

Naturedly the person that knows what will happen (Pierce Brosnan) has no credibility with the authorities. Then the disaster happens and he must save the beautiful (Linda Hamilton) and family. At first indifferent soon to become enamored.

I do not want to go too much into detail as you will lose the shock value. I can tell you it involves a volcano and a budding love story.

--Tom Keogh

Description

Something unspeakably chilling is heating up The City of Angels. Beneath the famed La Brea Tar Pits, a raging volcano pushes to the surface, raining a storm of deadly fire bombs and an endless tide of white-hot lava upon the stunned city. Experience the pulse-pounding thrills as the dream capital of the world erupts into the stuff nightmares are made of.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A fun film to watch........2007-06-22

When it comes to having a volcano erupt in the middle of a city, it can't get any more un-real than that. With that being said, once you manage to suspend your disbelief it's actually a pretty fun movie to watch.

The acting is definetly over the top, even Mr. Lee Jones himself manages to over-do his character. You learn very quickly while watching this movie that the characters are not worth caring about! They make very stupid decisions that show they have no common sense whatsoever, and its hilarious watching it happen.

The plot itself is very basic and follows the sterotypical Hollywood "survive a natural disaster" storyline. Complete with the lead character who is usually a male coming to the aid of the city (Jones) his sidekick which is generally a female (Heche) and the annoying son/daughter of the main character. All is done perfectly cliche' which makes this movie (in my opinion) a fun and adventurous comedy.

I recommend this movie for some good laughs and a fun time pointing out the sad mistakes Hollywood makes when it comes to these type of movies.

5 out of 5 stars it has Tommy Lee.......2007-05-22

What else can I say? It has Tommy Lee Jones in it, LA is on fire and I used to shop there.
Get out the pop corn and enjoy.

3 out of 5 stars Good Movie, Crap DVD.......2007-05-14

Honestly I like the movie, that's one of the reasons I pay for the thing, but when I sat back and watched it I was very disappointed. I was expecting this movie to have it 16:9 Enhanced so when I watch it on my widescreen TV I don't have to play around the with the aspect ratio to enjoy it. This got to me so much because the Australian version which was released after the US version is enhanced. This is something that people with the traditional square TV will not have to worry about but should you be the owner of a widescreen TV be warned, you may become frustrated.

2 out of 5 stars Annoying.......2007-05-03

The only reasons I'm giviing it 2 stars is that there are some very cool special effects and Tommy Lee Jones is a great actor.

My biggest problem with this movie is the contant "We survive anything" and the "I sacrifice myself so others can live / I Will die with you" crap.
It happens to the point where you don't feel sorry for people anymore, because it's so cliche. There's not emotion, just "I'm so stupid, I'll die anyway".
There are also way too many scenes where the characters do impossible things to save the day.

I also have some problems with two of the characters, which for me, ruins the movie...

--Kelly--
Kelly is the protaginst daughter and unfortunately has a lot of parts in the movie. She's supposed to be 12, but is portrayed by a 15 year old bad actor. This girl is spoiled, stupid and never uses her brain for anything, add the bad acting and you never feel bad about her.
Example, Kelly gets out of the car, lava is BEHIND the car. Does she run to safety? "DAAAAAAAAAD!!!!!!!" Nope, she stands there until dad CARRIES her away. And then they are in even greater danger than to begin with.

--Stan--
Stan is portrayed as a man who would do anything to resque another human, but his role is insanely exagurated, he has the personality of a comic character while his buddies acts like normal people.
He screams, shouts, barking out orders like a maniac to appear even more caring, but it just becomes how obviously he's the only one who cares, because the others don't say a thing.
And this isn't even the protoganist of the movie, Stan is just a filler to show how kind (stupid) some people are.
The whole train scene was the stupiest thing I've seen, I didn't feel sad about it, I laughed because it was so stupid.

I don't recommend this movie at all, there's just so much stupidity going on that ruins the flow of the movie.

5 out of 5 stars action packed.......2007-03-04

A volcano erupting in the middle of a city is a pretty interesting decision on the part of the story writers, seeing as how it's never been done before. At least, not that I know about. I remember back in the day thinking "wow, that's cool" as I watched the special effects and sat back amazed at them.

While some of the scenes were obviously not very believable, the fact is, a volcano exploding in the city streets is guaranteed to excite action fans and keep their attention, along with the people who want something different from the "same old same old" disaster films. The movie really works. Just don't expect everything you see to make sense.

Fans of '50s science fiction should be pleased by this "big bug" chiller, which offers a fine showcase for the talents of special effects master Willis O'Brien (King Kong). The Black Scorpion follows closely in the multiple footsteps of Them!, produced three years earlier by the same company (Warner Bros.)--again, giant insects threaten mankind, though here a volcano is responsible for unleashing them, and the metropolis in peril is Mexico City. Though direction, acting, and scripting aren't on par with Them!, O'Brien's title creatures (which sport implausible yet creepy faces) are memorably monstrous, especially during hero Richard Denning's visit to their nightmarish underground lair. Warner Bros.' DVD features a surprising amount of extras for an older title. "Stop Motion Masters" is a short tribute to O'Brien by his famed student Ray Harryhausen; also included is O'Brien's dinosaur-laden opening for Irwin Allen's The Animal World documentary, and legendary test footage for two unfilmed monster projects by O'Brien's assistant, Peter Petersen. --Paul Gaita

Description

They're big. They're bad. They scuttle along in caverns miles beneath the Earth - until an earthquake opens paths to the surface. Now these monsters of genus Arachnida are invading our world with deadly force. With top special effects co-designed by King Kong's Willis O'Brien, The Black Scorpion is horror with a sting more lethal than the king-sized ants that overran Los Angeles's sewers in the classic Them! Can humankind survive these invincible juggernauts? That fate rests on the shoulders of Hank Scott (1950s monster movie stalwart Richard Denning) as the creatures rip a train from its tracks, snatch a helicopter from the sky and, in the film's most gripping sequence, battle each other in their subterranean lair. Watch out!

DVD Features:
Featurette:Stop-Motion Masters with Ray Harryhausen; Never-before-seen test footage of the Las Vegas monster and beetlemen; Harryhausen-animated dinosaur sequence from Irwin Allen's 1956 The Animal World
Theatrical Trailer:Giant monsters trailer gallery featuring this film, The Beat from 20,000 Fathoms, Clash of the Titans and The Valley of the Gwangi

3 out of 5 stars Gwangi in a scorpion suit.......2007-04-09

Yep it is the standard big bug 50's sci-fi with a Mexican twist.

We start with the obligatory narrative and a description of what may come. The narrator thinks that volcanoes are evil and bring destruction to farm land. To this land comes a pair of archaeologically strange doctors. They discover a fallen girl (that was just horsing around) and one of the scientists falls in love. The other states "man is born single."

I will not reveal the ugly threat that you already see on the cover. However I think they used them again in "Attack of the Giant Crabs". Also it is fun to look at the technology of the time; they use huge walkie-talkie's, flash cameras (out of flash range), and Bakelite phones. The annoying part of the movie is the kid that will not stay in the car; we all hope he gets eaten early in the story.

5 out of 5 stars 1950'S BLACK SCORPION ROCKS.......2007-03-08

The 1950's Black Scorpion rocks,if you are a 1950's science fictionaholic. This one's got all the bells and whistles of the premo black & white science fiction era. It's fun, its campy, it's a classic!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent queso!.......2007-02-26

Yes, that's some high quality cheese. A giant bug movie set in Mexico and for the most part, the Mexicans are treated with respect and dignity. For the most part. So here's what happens. An earthquake/volcano montage of exploding volcanoes from all over the world occurs in Mexico, near the village of San Lorenzo. Two geologists, one from Mexico and one from the USA travel long and hard to "study" the effects. Along the way, the rescue a baby from an empty, thrashed house with a dead policeman in it! They arrive at San Lorenzo where everyone miraculously speaks perfect English. Thank goodness for us viewers! Anyway, the rumbling earth is not the only thing the locals have to deal with...something is picking off folks one family at a time! So the geologists venture forth, rescue a beautiful woman, discover the giant, scary scorpions, go into a cave full of them ("stay, Juanito, stay!"), get tricked back to Mexico City, devise an electric prod to kill the giant bug and a Mexican Army General in the only laugh-out-loud scene in the movie, kill the bug and all ends well. The American leaves early with the girl and everyone else has to stay behind to clean up.
Not bad at all, really, considering that they re-used a lot of footage and the bug scenes were either pretty good or laughably bad. My six year old declared it "The best movie EVER" so there you go. He was quite concerned about the giant bugs and how to kill them, as they were not effected by bullets. He especially liked the final scene where they get the bug into an arena and attack from all sides. Recommended for Family Night!

3 out of 5 stars Typical silly 50's scifi with uneven special effects.......2006-11-10

I bought this dvd only to get the only remnants of the 50's movie "Animal World" which has dinosaurs, which I remember being thrilled with when I saw it as a kid in the mid 50's. The Black Scorpion wasnt too bad as these giant insect/reptile due to atomic bombs experimentation, etc...
The scorpions were sometimes animated in the Ray Harryhausen style and other times by some lousy cartoonish method, probably when they ran out of money or schedule.
The girl was hot though, as usual she becomes a love interest for the guy who figures out how to kill the damn things.
Lessee, kill a monster, get the girl (kinda like knights slaying the dragon and getting the chick in distress).
One hilarious scene is when the giant scorpion decided to derail and bust up a train. I did a video capture on it and found printed on the locomotive tender.......Lionel Lines...
So you get the picture.
Fun to look at but only once and for laughs.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Awesome.......2006-11-10

This movie was awesome on every level. It had a great cast, great story, and great effects. The transfer and sound on this dvd is top notch as well. If you enjoy old monster movies you'll love the Black Scorpion!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars terrific!.......2007-01-29

This is absolutely the best DVD on volcanoes out there because it shows the impact on human life - not only on the people who live in the shadow of an active volcano, but on the people who study or chase volcanoes.

Even though it covers many different eruptions (both old and new), it is well organized and effective.

Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent DVD.......2007-01-09

I bought this for my six year old daughter, who has an interest in Volcanoes. It was a little much for her, but I really enjoyed it. Stunning images and very informative. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Hot, Hot, Hot.......2005-02-24

Explosive. Engaging. Horrific. Packed with amazing tales and footage, this DVD has even got a true Romeo and Juliet love story in it about two volcanologists who fall in love, chase eruptions around the world and are finally killed by a volcano. Some of the blazing images will make your skin tingle in awe, in beauty, in fright, in amazement. Nature DVDs don't get any better than this!

5 out of 5 stars Real Toasted Coast!.......2003-12-31

This is one of NGs better productions - partially because the subject itself is so fascinating - partially because of the spectacular footage of the eruptions of Mt Unzen (Japan) and the famous blast at Mt Pinatubo some years ago. Overall, the program gives a good general description of the geological issues, the different types of eruptive activity, as well as larger historical and disaster mitigation subjects. The material is well organized and presented. The DVD version is much better than the original VHS release, and has some additional programming of particular interest.

For all the "sound and fury" of some of Hollywood's recent forays into Volcano disaster movies - this one has the best "special effects" - it's all real!

For further reading (notwithstanding the technical nature of the contents), you should definately aquire the recently published Encyclopedia of Volcanoes (Haraldur Sigurdsson, et al. - Academic Press). Here's what truly lies beneath!

Highly recommended.

2 out of 5 stars Good video, dissapointing release.......2007-02-20

I'll start off with saying the video for Parabola is very interesting (as are all of Tool's videos) and that is why I was compelled to get this DVD. I wanted the video for my own collection and was also excited to see the "bonus features."

The only good thing I can say other than what I just did is that this was bought for me as a present, so I didn't waste any money on it.

Now to the bad. You have a menu that gives you the option of the video, a remix of the song, and the commentary. I decided to try the remix first. Most. Boring. Thing. Ever. My boyfriend and I were watching it, and for like, the first three or four minutes it's basically nothing, then it changes a tiny bit, making us think it would actually get good, and then it ends. We were pretty disappointed. But not to worry! We still can watch the commentary and get an insightful look into the video and what it's about! NO. As someone else described him, it's some jerk-off who has no business commenting on anything Tool does because based off what he says in the commentary (e.g. "here come the grapes of doom") I find it hard to believe he even understands any of their songs. In summation, I thought this would be cool to have being a hardcore Tool fan, but you really shouldn't bother. You end up irritated at how big a disappointment it is.

3 out of 5 stars why did i buy this?.......2007-02-09

In my estimation, Tool is the best band out there. However, this DVD, while great to watch, is miserably short. Why they didnt release this and Schism on one DVD, along with the two inessential remixes and non-band commentary is perfectly clear to me. To make more money.

I always thought Tool would be the last band to do something like this to fans who are obviously hard core and dedicated. But it looks like they have.
So i spent 15 dollars on this. It has one video and an annoying commentary, along with the most boring remix i have ever heard. The only reason a remix is on here is because they couldn't release this if it was only ten minutes long. So i gather the record company pulled them all aside and said, 'hey, if you can make this DVD at least 20 minutes long we can sell it for an inflated price.' GRRR!!!

anyway, while the video itself is essential and very unique and interesting, this is still a bit of a ripoff. wait for another 5 or 6 years and maybe they'll sell a 'complete' video collection for around 30 bucks and they'll make us hardcore fans buy it again!

3 out of 5 stars Parabola.......2007-02-08

The dvd was a let down. THere is only one music video and a wacky duel commentary that I found a little anoying. I'd say it's good for collectors but not for someone who wants a lot for their money.

5 out of 5 stars A+.......2007-01-19

If you like tool or weird music videos this is a must. The commentary soundtrack is awesome and the third selection is a really cool ambient song. Must own for tool fans. Tool seems to actually put out decent products, thanks Tool.

1 out of 5 stars Tool should be ashamed of themselves!.......2007-01-03

Go online and watch the Parabola video for free because that is all you are getting here. The DVD has no features whatsoever. Avoid this DVD at all costs. Tool should be ashamed of themselves for releasing something like this.
