Description

EL MARIACHI: All he wants is to be is a mariachi, like his father, his grandfather and his great grandfather before him. But the town he thinks will bring him luck brings only a curse of deadly mistaken identity. Forced to trade his guitar for a gun, the mariachi is playing for his life in this critically-acclaimed film debut from director Robert Rodriguez. Financed with earnings from a month-long stay in a research hospital, this astonishing action adventure was shot with no second takes, using borrowed equipment and a talented cast of unknowns. The riveting result is a wild bullet-dodging ride through a world of bandido violence, from the suspense of the opening shoot-out to the tragedy of the unexpected conclusion. With little more than a great story and a lot of heart, Rodriguez has created pure movie pleasure, setting new standards for independent filmmaking, and establishing himself as an unquestionable talent. "An enormously entertaining movie." (Roger Ebert, CHICAGO SUN-TIMES). DESPERADO: Antonio Banderas, Joaquim De Almeida, Salma Hayek, Steve Buscemi, Cheech Marin and Quentin Tarantino star in this stylish shoot-'em-up described as a south-of-the-border Pulp Fiction. Director Robert Rodriguez follows up his legendary debut film, El Mariachi, with this sexy sequel about a mysterious guitar player (Banderas) searching for vengeance against the men who murdered his girlfriend. ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO: Leaping back into action, gun-slinging, guitar-toting hero "El Mariachi" is back in town in ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO, as director Robert Rodriguez delivers the epic final chapter of his pulp Western trilogy. Starring Antonio Banderas, Salma Hayek, Johnny Depp, Mickey Rourke, Eva Mendes, Enrique Iglesias and Willem Dafoe ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO is a full-frontal assault.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome!.......2007-06-08

An absolutely terrific box set and a must have for all Robert Rodriguez fans. The Mexico Trilogy is great fun and the box set, with all three movies as well as all special features from the individually sold films, is quite a bargain at only $21. A great buy for sure!

5 out of 5 stars "Boy with camera" grows up.......2007-03-24

Starting with "Bedhead", and traveling through the Mexico Trilogy (sprinkled with a little "Spy Kids" here and there), you can see him educate himself and develop into a talented film maker. And he shares what he's learned with his audience along the way, by including his "Ten Minute Film (and Cooking) Schools".
You get the feeling, watching the special features included with the DVD packages, that he never sleeps, and that he needs to control all aspects of his creations, so that they are HIS and no one elses. This is a fine way to be (think Orson Welles); but I hope he can keep a grip on reality.

5 out of 5 stars Greatest Trilogy Ever.......2007-02-12

I watched all three of these movies. Fantastic. It's your typical shoot'em up movie with a vengeance. Great Price for all three. Does not take away from shelve space. Perfect.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2007-01-04

Bought it for the second movie - Desperado - which I loved, but ended up loving the first movie - El Mariachi - even more! Even though it's subtitled and in Spanish, it gives the beginning of the story and is campy and gritty, obviously low-budget but it's great. If you like foreign films and anything to do with Robert Rodriguez, you'd love this set of movies and it'd be worth adding to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars The best........2006-11-10

What is there to say... These movies have it all from drama, comedy, action, ect... If you're a dude get it for the action and gun fights, and for you ladies d'uh its got Antonio Banderas for you in there. Anyhoo stop reading this and buy it.

4 out of 5 stars Legendary film, but I expected it to be little better.......2007-03-21

This film is certainly an inspiration for every aspiring director dreaming about making his way in the maze of movie industry with virtually no money in his/her pocket.. The movie was shot with the strikingly low budget of 7,000 USD (may be + or - a little) by Robert Rodriguez - my personal idol and the most insolent "director" on the face of earth! Well there are many legends about how this guy, who was fanatic about making movies and did this solely for his pleasure, decided to make a big 16 mm project and had to undergo some medical experimentation on his body to raise enough money for it, which nobody else in his sane mind would deem enough.. There is no need to recite these stories because they are well-known. But to those of you who plan to buy this DVD I strongly recommend to order it together with his book "A Rebel Without A Crew" where Rodriguez in his simple and humorous style describes the whole adventure, how he and his friends went through all the troubles to shoot the movie and then how they marketted it in Holliwood and totally by chance it was noticed by some big ones.. It's really a very exciting book and makes you go through all the thrills together with the crew members. So it's 100-times more interesting to see the movie after you read the book, because it's exciting to see how all that was so well described and nurished in the book, looks in reality. Well, and to speak honestly, the movie itself is not of very high artistic value of course, but it's value is made by the story of its creation among other things. I must say I was a little bit dissapointed when I saw the film after reading the book, which probably made my expectations too high.. It seemed to me little too primitive and vulgar at times.. but, hey, then I remembered that it was made by non-professional with virtually no equipment except an old 16 mm camera and casting random villagers.. and I forgave it all its pitfalls. Overall 4 stars from me for very good movie and even better story that veils it!

P.S. Yeah, and this DVD comes with very good add-ons, namely there is Rodriguez' short film "Beadhead" which won some prize at one of the amateur festivals. Also his "10 Minute Film School" fiturette, which is well worse seeing for every aspiring amateur director.

To those of you who might complain a little about the quality of the picture, I should remind that this film was originally shot in 16 mm format, then it was transfered on various formats several times until finally this master version was produced. So.. don't be too judgemental and just enjoy the movie!

5 out of 5 stars El mariachi.......2006-05-30

Great movie preview!Makes you want to see the movie!Rated R for strong violence.

5 out of 5 stars six stars.......2006-02-15

Fantastic movie - Spanish subtitles - plot is the old mistaken identity one - with lives at stake - ending was wonderfully Spanish - Diego Rivera's (the great muralist) blood and guts and doom with much hilarity thrown in. Energy of Spike Lee - message of John Singleton ("Boys n the Hood"). As surprisingly good as "After Dark, My Sweet" and as offbeat and original. Don't miss it.

4 out of 5 stars good stuff.......2005-08-02

It is interesting to observe the difference of opinion among reviewers regarding the relative merits of "El Mariachi" and "Desperado". I agree with those who prefer the low-budget "El Mariachi". Of course it's a fictional tale, but its atmospherics and characters just seem genuinely redolent of northern Mexico; whereas "Desperado" is an entirely deracinated cartoonish Hollywood product. The fact that the language of "Desperado" is English, whereas that of "El Mariachi" is Spanish, is telling. Something bad seems to happen to Spanish-speaking actors, like Banderas and Selma Hayek, who "go Hollywood". It's hard to be a good actor in a language you speak imperfectly. Banderas and Hayek are both pretty much embarrasing in "Desperado". The no-name actors of "El Mariachi" are decidedly not.

I suspect the difference of opinion has a lot to do with whether you know anything about Mexico. "Desperado", incidentally, is not a Spanish word. The Spanish word is "desesperado", or perhaps "pistolero", which is how the title is rendered in the Spanish dubbing.

4 out of 5 stars very impressive Indy film.......2005-07-17

when playing a guitar can be a matter of life&Death. who knew?? mistaken idenity&other twisted things in this film keep the suspense going all throughout the film.the switch of a Guitar Case flips the whole game out of control.this is a very impressive film that is a true nail biter.

5 out of 5 stars "Humilde, Valiente y Sincero".......2007-05-03

"El Enamorado," AKA "Vuelve Martin Corona," is the 3rd film Pedro Infante made with Sarita Montiel, the Spanish singer/actress who was an international superstar in the 50's and 60's. This sequel to "Ahi Viene Martin Corona" has the same marvelous cast, With Infante as Martin, Montiel as his love Rosario, Lalo Gonzalez as Piporro, his teacher and friend, and Florencio Castello as Rosario's father. By this time Martin and Rosario have married and have a family, and her jealousy and temper, as well as her distaste for guns, have curtailed Martin's activities of helping those who need protection from the "bad guys" in the land, and people are saying he is no longer the man he used to be. Rosario finally relents, and the last 1/2 hour of "El Enamorado" takes a turn and is very dramatic, with some "edge of your seat" moments.

Directed by Miguel Zacarias, the film also includes legendary singer/songwiter Jose Alfredo Jimenez, and glorious cinematography by the great Gabriel Figueroa, whose use of light and shade, and the sheer beauty of his work is especially noticeable in the last part of the film. No subtitles are available. There are plenty of delightful songs to enjoy, and the list is:
1: "Del Mero Norte" (Jose Alfredo Jimenez)
2: "Viejos Amigos" (Infante)
3: "Siempre, Siempre" (Infante)
4: "Un Dia Nublado" (Infante)
5: "Ahi Vienen los Mariachis" (Infante)
6: "La Buenaventura" (Montiel)

Before Robert Rodriguez's El Mariachi, Mexicans in North American action films were typically maids, drug dealers, or prison inmates. Even if the Cisco Kid was a friend of yours, you handled a dust cloth or a Mac-10 if you lasted in Hollywood longer than a New York minuto. But when El Mariachi crossed the border in 1992, things changed. Granted, it still involved a drug lord in a shoot-em-up, bang-bang, but this time the good guy was a Mexican. Austin-based Rodriguez made El Mariachi for a fistful of pesos and a little help from his friends. He wrote, directed, coproduced, edited, and operated the camera. Plus, he assembled a cast that had never acted before to work por nada. All for a paltry $7,000, a milagro without a beanfield war.

Desperado continues the outrageous action adventure. Working with a much bigger budget, Rodriguez returns the nameless mariachi to nonstop action. Again thrust into a world he never made, the hero takes his guitar-case arsenal deep into the criminal labyrinth of Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida), el gran chingon of the Mexican drug lords. With an amigo (Steve Buscemi) and a beautiful bookstore owner (Salma Hayek), el mariachi confronts an outrageous cast along the way, including a bartender (Cheech Marin), a drug deal pick-up guy (Quentin Tarantino), and the original mariachi (coproducer Carlos Gallardo) as a new-found compa'. Antonio Banderas has the lead this time, and if he's not quite up to the challenge, it's probably because he's Spanish, not Mexican, a distinction not lost by anyone raised on what the popular media now calls "ethnic food." That said, Desperado is not to be missed. Using intelligence, romance, and humor--as well as plenty of explosive, surreal violence--Rodriguez again showcases the timeless struggle between the forces of darkness and light. And, in the process, he's recasting the mold for the contemporary action hero--kids now argue about who gets to play the Mexican. --Stephan Magcosta

5 out of 5 stars Great movies - even greater instruction.......2006-12-28

I bought these movies after reading Robert Rodriguez's book and listening to El Mariachi's commentary. It became a must have in my library because of the high level of instruction both commentaries give.

If you are an indie film maker, pick these up without thinking twice.

If you dig action movies, they are pretty good for that as well. =)

As I watched this film for the first time, my two reactions were (a) I'll bet they all had fun making it and (b) is this a parody of the so-called "Spaghetti Westerns"? Essentially, there is no plot. El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas) seeks revenge from Bucho (Joaquim de Almeida) in a town which the drug dealer controls. EM enlists the support and assistance of Carolina (Selma Hayek) who owns and manages the local book store. (I'm not making this up.) No one eats or sleeps in this film. All of the action occurs during the day. There are a few crowd scenes but no one in the crowd seems to have any interest whatsoever in the fact that the street scenes are being filmed. There is one bar of special note. Cheech Marin is its host and bartender. (If you think the bar in Star Wars is unfriendly, this one makes it seem like the Palm Court at The Plaza in New York.) At one point, Quentin Tarantino briefly appears. Apparently he is involved in a drug deal which goes bad. Steve Buscemi also makes a brief appearance. Prudently, he decides not to become involved in the plot. (Where is Harvey Keitel?) EM is a one-man-army. Credit Rodriguez with brilliantly choreographing his creative and relentless carnage which leads up to the inevitable showdown with Bucho. Although most of this film makes no sense whatsoever, I found it thoroughly entertaining. It is on my Top Ten list of films to watch while consuming buttered popcorn, a box of Dots, and a cold beverage...or two.

    Description

My African Uncle (2006) Dennis O'Sullivan is going through a rough time. He's 40 years old, depressed, wasting his life drinking beer, and watching videos of his dead wife. In an effort to motivate him, his sister and brother-in-law give him a computer in the hope that he will find a girlfriend, a hobby, an interest-anything to get him off of the couch. He immediately makes a new friend, Barrister Albert of Nigeria, who notifies Dennis that his great uncle has perished in a tragic plain accident in Africa , leaving him a fortune. Dennis is soon visited by the mysterious Bayo and his life is changed more than Bridget and Kevin could have imagined. El Cuco(2006) George and Stacy Cucola are a middle-class couple with three children and a house in Union, New Jersey. They are happy,or at least comfortable with each other, although there is one minor issue-George likes to watch Mexican soap operas on the Spanish channel. One night after a fight, George falls asleep and enters the world of El Cuco, becoming the star of the show."Jorge" survives the drama of the novella and eventually the episode ends up with our leading man in the hot tub with his sister, a catholic nun, and his childhood friend who has had a sex change operation. George abruptly wakes up next to Stacy. Will he have a new appreciation for her and their real life? www.freakishintrigue.com

    5 out of 5 stars Encore.......2007-02-18

The short films were so well written and acted they left me feeling like I knew the actors. I can only hope Frakish Intrigue continues to develop the talented writers, actors and director. I am looking forward to their next film.

    5 out of 5 stars Funny & Entertaining.......2007-02-16

4 out of 5 stars WE SHOWED THIS ON JIHADISTS NIGHT .......2007-02-13

IT WAS A BIG HIT WITH SOME OF THE YOUNGER PEOPLE IN THE MOSQUE. I FOR ONE WILL NOT BE JOINING MY FELLOW WARRIERS OF ALLAH IN THE RACE TO KILL TOM WHELAN AND DESTROY FREAKISH INTRIGUE , FATWA OR NOT. BTW NEXT WEEK WE ARE SHOWING LITTLE MISS SUNSHINE WHICH IS SUPPOSED TO BE A CUTE LITTLE FILM.

5 out of 5 stars This is what independent film should be about.......2007-02-12

Two character driven stories, technically sound, smart and clever. Both shorts, El Cuco and My African Uncle, are well written, acted and directed. Good fun. Check it out.
