An enticing caper flick.......2007-06-23
This is one of my favorite guilty pleasure movies. Yes, I realize that "Entrapment" isn't an Academy Award-winning caliber film. It isn't Catherine Zeta Jones or Sean Connery's best work, either, and the "sexual tension" that exists between their characters is a bit farfetched, to say the least...but I still love this movie! Despite the 600-year age difference between them, Connery and Zeta Jones play off each other brilliantly in this fun and suspenseful film about two master thieves who team up for two huge jobs. There are plenty of twists and turns in this film, and it will keep you guessing until the very end. (It will also make you wish that Zeta Jones could go back in time and play a Bond girl in "Goldfinger" or something...she and a much younger Connery would have been smoking hot on screen!)
Doable Millenium Heist: Value 8 Billion, One Dollar, 67 Cents.......2007-03-21
Stealing the Rembrandt was just for practice. Ginny Barker (Catherine Zeta-Jones) who worked for Waverly Security had a much larger goal in mind robbing the International Clearance Bank during the Millenium Celebratrion on New Year's Eve in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia but she needed help. She had been planning this event for a few years ... Hector Cruz (Will Patton) head of security had noticed she had no friends. She had no social life. She worked long hours doing statistical calculations and creating computer graphics examining all angles of the rooms and items her company insured and protected. He worried about her. She convinced Hector to let her attempt to catch and bring to justice the highly successful thief: McDougall (Sean Connery). He was a handsome foxy older gentleman, a wealthy Scotsman who had no need for the money but was a thief for the challenge of it. He was in the gallery where the Rembrandt was showcased during its opening exhibit, he was the likliest suspect. Hector was worried because two agents had previously disappeared trying to apprehend McDougall but Gin Barker convinced him because she was a woman ... she could do it. Despite misgivings, he gave her the chance to try.
Sean Connery played the aging gray haired foxy thief to perfection. He lived in Scotland, in a castle on an isolated island. He thought he had everything ... until he met Gin Barker. She followed him about in London, and watched him wander into a computer company, where he managed to steal five chips easily worth a million dollars each. She was exhausted as she returned to her hotel room, only to discover her luggage missing. She was too tired to report it immediately, pealed off her clothes and and prepared for bed ... totally naked because her dressing gown was among the missing items. She was shocked to discover someone staring at her in the dark. It was Mac (McDougall). He asked why was she following him around London. She then presented to him her grandiose plans. He mentioned his rules: "first we try, then we trust" and the corollary, "it's strictly business" ...
First he tested her and when she passed all his challenges, beyond his wildest expectations, he took her up on the job. They trained for the highest value monetary robbery of all time. This film appeals on multiple levels: it includes mystery, romance, tension, unexpected twists and turns in the plot and exotic locales, London, Scotland and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The May - December romance and relationship which builds from total distrust, to mutual respect, to outright admiration is fun to watch. Catherine Zeta-Jones is believable, beautiful and in fantastic form as she executes gymnastic maneuvers that would make a Gold Medal Female Olympics Champion blush with pride. Sean Connery delivers a superb performance and also delivers outstanding one line responses to her confident approach. He says, "I don't like surprises." She replies, "There won't be any." He countermands, "Trust me, there always are." This is a highly enjoyable film and receives my highest recommendation for acting, story-line, plot development, action, and intrigue. Sean Connery And Zeta-Jones seemed an odd couple. But the actually compliment each other and create a chemistry which is not quite sensual but it makes the movie fun to watch. The plot, the clever dialogue and the twists make an entertaining film. The plot may be a tad far fetched but it is only a movie that will keep you on your seat (or sofa).

Bought the DVD after watching The Thomas Crown Affair, I happened to find out that Entrapment belongs to an higher and different rank. Connery and Zeta Jones are amazing in their roles, they give a very believable performance as thieves, of course helped by a sophisticated and well written plot and a perfect choice of music. The capers are very inventive and suggest an accurate research by the writers, even the romantic part is handled with such a grace that almost you don't see the huge age gap between the characters. If you have not seen the movie yet, as it happened to me, you will be pleased and entertained by both the movie itself and the extras, which as usual are always too few for a movie like this.

Sean Connery is one of the few men I know who can do no wrong. He played this role with the his usual skill and panache. He was an extremely convincing as a con man. The beautiful Catherine Zeta-Jones was a good match in this role.

Sean Connery plays a master thief thought to be long retired, while Katherine Zeta-Jones is his foil, a hotshot insurance investigator assigned to his case. They both have a little something to hold over each other's heads, until it turns out that Zeta-Jones is a professional art thief herself and is playing on both sides of the fence. At first they eye each other with mutual distrust until they team up for a job, which goes off without a hitch. Inevitably their prickly relationship begins to thaw somewhat, and the two become attracted to each other as they plan out the massive Y2K bank scam that is the movie's climax (complete with sequel-ready ending). Entrapment plays somewhat like a '70s caper movie revamped for the gadget-happy high-tech '90s. The plot takes a few too many labored twists and turns, and the chemistry between the two leads is nearly nonexistent, though both carry on gamely in their parts. On the other hand, there is some genuine suspense in many scenes as they go about their business, dripping with whiz-bang burglary devices. Zeta-Jones, of course, is drop-dead gorgeous, and Connery is as reliable as always in his role. The fairly flat editing and direction tends to drag the film down somewhat, but fans of caper movies, high-tech thrillers, and the two leads should find plenty to like in this film. --Jerry Renshaw

Hot babes, lukewarm movie.......2006-08-14
Some kids are riding dirt bikes up in the forests of Northern Minnesota (well, I think Romania is filling in for Minnesota), and one of them gets hurt. A forest ranger comes to help, but an arsonist has started a series of forest fires and no matter which way they go, they're cut off from civilization. One of the bikers is an obnoxious jerk, so there's plenty of arguing between him and the ranger (The obnoxious dude comes to a fairly spectacular end). Much of the movie is spent watching people on dirt bikes ride through flames, fall down, be surrounded by flames, scream, be rescued, etc. Some parts of it are pretty cool.
There's also a subplot with the arsonist, who turns into a sort of Jason Vorhees character by the end (watch the "making of" featurette, this guy is quite a character). The bikers and the ranger make their way to a mine to escape the fire, but of course the mine is full of methane gas, they have to climb over a big hole, they pretty much all have a broken leg or arm by this point, and the arsonist is attacking them. Overall, this movie just never seems to generate much excitement. Fire isn't all that exciting when seen on television, but I give them credit - they made it as exciting as anyone could have made it. When we first see it, there's a spooky haze hanging in the forest. Later on, you get the full surround-sound treatment as the blaze consumes the forest. Everywhere they go, there's big gas jets firing flames everywhere.
The two girls are really cute, it's definitely got that going for it. They did a really good job with what they had to work with, all the dirt bike riding sequences are about as exciting as they possibly could have been: The people are really flying through the woods, dirt is flying, engines are howling, but how much dirt bike riding can you really watch and still be interested?
You get a nice little "making of" featurette which is informative and funny. This is one of those disks that defaults to a Dolby 2.0 soundtrack. Make sure you choose the Dolby 5.1 soundtrack before you watch, it's a very nicely done surround-sound track and it adds considerably to the experience.
PUT OUT THIS FIRE.......2006-05-12
NATURE UNLEASHED has given us avalanches, tornadoes, earthquakes, volcanoes and now fire. This is probably the least effective of the series. The villain is a Michael Myers like creature out for revenge on the park ranger who prevented him from stealing gold from a wornout mine. The fire scenes are CGI crafted and aren't that impressive; most of the characters are cardboard and not too likeable and "star" Bryan Gennesse chews up the scenery badly. For firebugs only.

Robots and armies and girlfriends, oh my!.......2005-11-26
Back in the mid-1980's, the only way for the average fanboy to get anime was through friends or other such unscrupulous bootleggers. Madox 01: Metal Skin Panic was one of the first such tapes that came into my possession, along with classics like Project A-ko and Area 88. All of these, of course, were in Japanese with no subtitles. But enough with the history lesson: you wanna know about the movie. For early anime, it's actually quite good: a self-contained story (somewhat hackneyed these days) about a boy who comes into possession of a highly advanced robotic exoskeleton through dumb luck. (It literally falls off the back of a truck and into his garage apartment.) Of course, he has a chaste-but-smoldering relationship with a girl, whom he loves. Although he is at first thrilled with his newfound toy, the army soon comes looking for its weapon, sending their resident tank-commanding lunatic who just happens to hate armored suit technology in general. Things look profoundly bad for our hero -- but who is that beautiful woman with the even more advanced Madox suit? Equal parts humor and fighting robot action make this a favorite, even now.
Excellent anime from the past!!!!!!!!.......2004-03-19
I saw this movie in the late 80s and ive loved it ever since. Been waiting a long time for this to come out on DVD. Not your typical Mecha anime. A guy trys to impress his girlfriend by whearing a mecha-suit that was found, now hes traped in it and the army is after him!! Shows how diffacult it can be to roam around in the city wearing a tank!

Description
It is the beginning of the industrial revolution, and feudal Japan is in turmoil. The ruling Shogun are wielding their abusive powers to instill fear and dominance over their oppressed subjects. Beatings, imprisonment, rape and even murder are the adopted tactics chosen to maintain their reign. The bloodshed must end. A group of Samurai have banded together, and, with the development of new weapons and new technology, they have both the will and the hardware to stand up and fight. Ichimatsu is one of these fighters. By day, he works incognito at a local tavern, in the evenings he frequents the brothels, and by the dark of night, he doles out some big-time, gun-barrel justice.

Description
He looks like a regular guy until he gets you in his truck... but by then it's too late. When Sylvia deserts her boyfriend at a roadhouse bar, she needs a ride and accepts one from a friendly truck driver. But Sylvia soon discovers that this is no ordinary truck and no ordinary trucker. She's hitched a ride on an 18-wheel slaughterhouse and hooked up with a one-man killing machine. Sylvia isn't his first victim and she won't be his last. But the only thing that can save her now is four wheels burning rubber on the blacktop and the boyfriend she left behind.

A (Chillingly Good) Bumpy Ride.......2006-05-12
This is an excellent, overlooked thriller - with well-acted menace.
Black Top is one of those relatively low-budget, quick-production suspense movies that relies on casting an acclaimed actor or celebrity from another field in the central role of psychopath - and then lets the action revolve around his depredations. In this case, Meatloaf fills the bill to grippingly good effect.
We've all heard a man and woman start to argue, maybe as they're coming out of a tavern, half-sloshed. And while they may have been chummy enough in the tavern, out on the street, things turn ugly. The man starts slinging foul language, using the B... word, accusing the woman of being a slut. If you carry that common script farther into rage and irrationality - you get the stuff of a lot of thriller movies. And Meatloaf makes the transition from pal to pathology with exceptionally frightening results. He slides from seeing Kristin Davis as female, into seeing her as female figure, a representative of everything he has come to hate. And his yellowing teeth almost seem to morph into fangs at that moment, so convincing is his fury.
If you like thrillers that aren't slasher films, you will like this. It definitely stands out from the ordinary traffic jam of scary movies.
Best movie with Kristin Davis ever.......2006-02-26
When I first saw this movie, I melted when I saw Kristin davis! I never really paid any attention to her or her TV show "Sex and The City." But then I saw her movie "Blacktop." And when I saw it, that is when she really caught my attention! So to all of you who haven't seen Sex and The City, watch the movie Blacktop and Kristin Davis will really captivate you.
PARADISE BY THE TRUCKSTOP LIGHTS.......2004-01-25
We've had THE HITCHER, HITCHER II, BREAKDOWN and others focusing on the plot of this movie. HBO films brings us Meat Loaf Aday (what a strange last name)in the role of a psychotic trucker who seemingly had a rather difficult youth. He overhears a couple having a slight argument regarding commitment and capitalizes on this when the woman decides she's not staying with her traveling comic boyfriend. Meanwhile studly boyfriend finds out that Meat Loaf may be responsible for the disappearance of a young girl. Hmmm...from hereon, it's a chase movie with some unusual dialogue between Meat Loaf and his captive, and some pretty scenery.
Meat Loaf, known for his bombastic career singing overwrought Jim Steinemann songs, does a commendable job in his role, but toward the end, he goes over the top, even if he is a psychotic. Kristin Davis as Sylvia is one of the movie's problems; she doesn't have the charisma to pull her role off. Lochlyn Monroe, who was so good in SCARY MOVIE, is lame in this role, trying so hard to be a studly Charles Bronson character. For a thriller, the movie is also very slow, in between the inevitable action scenes. The climax seems to borrow directly from BREAKDOWN, but it does maintain its suspense. I think BREAKDOWN is a far superior movie, but this one is okay.
thriller genre at its best.......2003-06-16
Best thriller since i know what you did last summer. watched it the other day. at first i thought they were making fun of joy ride with the character played meatloaf.in the end awesome thriller with a cool ending
the best thriller ever.......2003-06-16
