The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid- fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving. Bay's protagonists--the eight crude, lewd, oversexed (but lovable, of course) oil drillers summoned to save the world from a Texas-sized meteor hurling toward the earth--are not flawless heroes, but common men with whom all can relate. In this huge Western-in-space soap opera, they're American cowboys turned astronauts. Sci-fi buffs will appreciate Bay's fetishizing of technology, even though it's apparent he doesn't understand it as anything more than flashing lights and shiny gadgets. Smartly, the duo also tries to lure the art-house crowd, raiding the local indie acting stable and populating the film with guys like Steve Buscemi, Billy Bob Thornton, Owen Wilson, and Michael Duncan, all adding needed touches of humor and charisma. When Bay applies his sledgehammer aesthetics to the action portions of the film, it's mindless fun; it's only when Armageddon tackles humanity that it becomes truly offensive. Not since Mississippi Burning have racial and cultural stereotypes been substituted for characters so blatantly--African Americans, Japanese, Chinese, Scottish, Samoans, Muslims, French ... if it's not white and American, Bay simplifies it. Or, make that white male America; the film features only three notable females--four if you count the meteor, who's constantly referred to as a "bitch that needs drillin'," but she's a hell of a lot more developed and unpredictable than the other women characters combined. Sure, Bay's film creates some tension and contains some visceral moments, but if he can't create any redeemable characters outside of those in space, what's the point of saving the planet? --Dave McCoy

5 out of 5 stars "We have 18 days before it hits Earth...".......2007-06-10

This action-packed, fast paced, movie has it all and it keeps your attention as well. People need to understand that Hollywood makes millions of dollars with this particular style of film, and who is to blame them. If something gives you a positive outcome, then it would be foolish not to attempt it again. I also understand that there are those movies that are on a category of their own and that break the boundaries of a typical Hollywood movie. But, Armaggedon serves its main purpose. It keeps you entertained and it has all the elements that make an action movie great. Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer are a lethal combination when it comes to this particular genre of movies, and I feel that is an honest compliment to admit that they are two of the best out there. Job well done!

All the right stuff for this gang.... What a way to save the world.

5 out of 5 stars Action Packed And A Whole Lot Of Fun!.......2007-06-04

I don't understand it when people say that this movie is not realistic, it never claims to be! It is a fun ride with with a great sound track and cast. I don't want this type of movie to be realistic, it would be too boring! This was the biggest hit of the year it was released for good reason......IT'S ENTERTAINING!!!!! That is what a movie should be! I watch a movie to escape and be swooped away from reality and that is what Armageddon does very well. If you can't just sit back and enjoy this movie with some popcorn and a soda than I feel sorry for you. Life is too short to not enjoy a great flick like Armageddon! I can't wait until it comes out in HD! Now go put the DVD in the player and hang on! :-)

1 out of 5 stars The perfect movie for stupid people!.......2007-05-30

Armageddon ranks up there with one of the absolute worst movies I've had the misfortune of seeing. It gives new meaning to the phrase 'over the top'. (Bigger is not better). Why is it that Hollywood insists on giving 99% of the attention to ridiculous special fx and 1% to the script/writing? Mega budget blockbusters like Armageddon are the most guilty of misappropriation of resources. Somebody please make Michael Bay and Jerry Bruckheimer stop ...

4 out of 5 stars Like a good friend.......2007-05-12

The music, how it is cut and taken - has a good feeling about it. One of those film I put on while I'm home doing something. And it keep's me company.

A great big rock hits the earth, and lots of people die. That's pretty much all there is to it, and most of that was in the trailer. Can a major Hollywood movie really squeak by with such a slender excuse for a premise? The old disaster-movie king, cheese-meister Irwin Allen (The Poseidon Adventure, Earthquake), would have made a kitsch classic out of this, with Charlton Heston, rather than a resigned and mumbly Robert Duvall, as the veteran astronaut who risks several lives trying to blow up the comet that's headed right this way! As stiffly directed by Mimi Leder, this thick slice of ham errs on the side of solemnity. It may the be most earnest end-of-the-world picture since Stanley Kramer's atomic-doom drama On the Beach. There are a couple of classic melodramatic flourishes: an estranged father and daughter who share a tearful reconciliation as a Godzilla-sized tidal wave looms on the horizon; and an astronaut, communicating on video with his loved ones back on Earth, who follows whispered instructions from a buddy lurking just off camera--so that his little boy won't realize that he's been struck blind. With Morgan Freeman as the president of the United States. --David Chute

Description

In DEEP IMPACT, Leo Beiderman (Elijah Wood), joins a field study for his high school's Astronomy Club and discovers a new comet that unfortunately is headed for Earth. While scientists build a cave to prevent the extinction of the human race, they estimate that only 800,000 people can be selected to survive the "Deep Impact." The threat of a comet ending the world quickly sends Americans into a panic until the president announces a plan to send astronauts on a mission to destroy the comet before it reaches earth.

5 out of 5 stars Deep Impact (Special Collector's Edition)..........2007-06-02

Tea Leoni played a convincing character in this movie. Morgan Freeman was nothing short of outstanding as President in this film. Great story that makes you think! Five stars!

3 out of 5 stars The real disaster wasn't the asteroid.......2007-04-10

The governments of the world find out about an asteroid on a cataclysmic path with our planet. Our government decides We the People are too stupid and brutish to be trusted to act responsibly with that knowledge, and they use billions of our tax dollars to build a massive shelter for favored citizens, all with great secrecy, with a few remaining slots to be rationed out to the taxpayers via lottery.

The catastrophe wasn't as bad as anticipated, and had the U.S. government not decided to use our tax dollars as their personal piggy bank to provide an "ark" for politicians and their families and friends, individual citizens could have built shelters or made other provisions that might likely have let them survive the disastrous strike that sent a massive tidal wave surging halfway across the country.

The real disaster was that millions of U.S. citizens died, but all the politicians were saved. Yeah, that's what I want when it's time to rebuild civilization: the privileged political class ready to resume Big Government As Usual. Ugh!

Of course, the movie was fiction. The bunkers our government has built for themselves and not us, those are real. While I pray such survivalist measures are never necessary, it does give one a moment of pause to realize that we've financed the safety of a pampered ruling class, while they're telling us to stock up on duct tape and a month's worth of canned goods in case of emergency.

3 out of 5 stars This or That.......2007-03-19

Armageddon resulted in a big love story with big explosions and bigger tear jerker at the end with no time for filler. That was okay, and Armageddon was what it was. Armageddon was for the eye.

Deep Impact resulted in a very storytelling kind of way of the small bits of human psyche and how one would deal with the end of the world coming while saving the big explosion for the final 5 minutes of the film. And for Deep Impact, that was okay. Deep Impact was - sorta - for the mind.

To be honest, Deep Impact was a pretty dull viewing. I was bored with it at first, until I let myself get involved with the characters. And I could only do that once I looked past the so-so acting of Tea Leoni and the annoyance of Elijah Wood and LeeLee Sobeiski's performances. When it came down to the end, I was more interested in the mother of Tea's character, and the parents of LeeLee's characters. Vanessa Redgrave, who played Tea's mother, is always a wonderful actress to behold, and although given limited screentime, her character was the most endearing in the movie.

Deep Impact is the dull asteroid movie that is for an acquired taste.

2 out of 5 stars Boring disaster.......2007-01-21

I'm giving this two stars because it's just marginally better than the totally absurd "Day After Tomorrow". It starts off pretty well and ends moderately well, but the entire middle is BORING. It's very hard to care about any of the characters, most of whom seem to be doing everything they can to be shallow idiots, if not totally brain dead. Their scripted actions are, in many cases, directly opposite to the real actions of people in disasters, such as we have seen in the World Trade Center or in the 2006 tsunami. Perhaps that is an observation from hind sight, since this movie was made long before we had such disasters to judge it by.

The one real person in the entire cast is Morgan Freeman as the President of the US. The worst is Tea Leoni, who sleepwalks through the picture.

As for the destruction of NYC, that is pretty good, much better than in some of the other disaster movies I have seen ("Fourth of July", "Day After Tomorrow", etc.). There is one ironic and sad moment, as the World Trade Center is inundated, but not totally destroyed. But, of course, this movie was made before....

2 out of 5 stars Why is Tea Leoni an actress? The woman cannot act.......2007-01-21

Tea Leoni gets the Ben Affleck award for acting malpractice. The woman cannot act, and why anyone would give her the starring role in any film is a complete mystery. This woman not only cannot act, at least in this film she appears to be stoned on some powerful drug. And I am being kind. (Very kind.) Granted that she is an ectomorphic blonde, but come on. There are others out there with true acting ability. Leoni has none.

Morgan Freeman and Robert Duvall save this film from being an utter turkey, but only by a slight margin. Freeman as the President of the United States is very, very good, and he is really the savior of this otherwise awful film. This one is a stinker, but the special effects just barely make it watchable to the end. I never tire of watching New York City get destroyed. This saves the film, just as the destruction of New York has saved several other otherwise horrible films. Only barely though.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars It's "come to you-know-who" time........2007-06-07

This film is billed as science fiction and it is. It is, however, a very heavy-handed and almost continuous message for salvation via you-know-who. Not surprisingly it is produced by one of the major church organizations. A competent cast including one of the ever-present Baldwins, and if you either are sympathetic to the constantly repeated message or can avoid letting it get in your way, a moderately enjoyable sci-fi flick.

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly good production.......2007-01-23

The producers of this film made some very wise choices - instead of trying to make a blockbuster film with their VERY modest budget, they chose instead to focus on the story and leaving what would otherwise have required some serious (and expensive) special effects, to your imagination. This works surprisingly well in this film.

The Gospel of Jesus Christ is clearly spelled out, and gives a basically believable look at what the future of this very country (USA) holds if we continue on the path we are on...

Thought-provoking, and inspiring.

4 out of 5 stars 666, Losing One's Life, Saving One's Soul..........2006-11-24

The drama SIX takes place in the upcoming time of a totalitarian world ruler and follows men imprisoned for not yet taking the required "mark of the beast" upon the hand or forehead. We meet believers and unbelievers confronted with choices of life and death--death by guillotine line, something true to Revelation speaking of Christian beheadings, and a scene that reminded me of the Holocaust scenes of prisoners hung as a group in a line. Actual decapitation is not shown, and the movie is suitable for young teens and up.

Several of these actors also appeared in the movie The Moment After, which I recommend even more highly. Once again, though, actor Troy Winbush's screen time ends much too soon. Stephen Baldwin's delivers a subtle, convincing performance as a Spirit-filled prison pastor soon to be executed.

The story's rather simple, but a reminder to stand firm in the faith, that losing one's soul is worse than death. There is a good bit of scripture quoting, some while reading from prison cell walls entirely covered with Bible verses, something that at first required me to suspend my disbelief that this would be allowed. But then I remembered the writings from the Roman catacombs and cell of Bonhoeffer, and considered that the power of scripture might be unapprreciated by the future authorities, so perhaps it could happen. Anyway, overall, this is solid but simple endtimes entertainment.

4 out of 5 stars "You Can Be Fearless".......2006-10-03

"Six: The Mark Unleashed" is a well paced end-times drama that though a low-budget production, will be highly entertaining for anyone who likes apocalyptic scenarios, and listening to a script that contains a lot of Scripture, though some non-Christians may even find it boring and not appreciate its message. The sets are minimal, as much of the film takes place within the confines of a prison, and the emphasis is on the character development of the people in the story. Those who have received the "Holy Implant" have chosen self-preservation at any cost, with life but no freedom, and those who remain true to their Christian beliefs and don't get "branded," accept martyrdom (by guillotine) as a better alternative. There are also those who are simply "underground," having not committed to Christianity, but fearing the implant. The implant is a reprogramming device that makes one conform to obey the Antichrist, during the years of Tribulation.

The film is overall very well acted, with producer/director Kevin Downes as Jerry, who is a car thief along with his buddy Brody, played by writer/producer David White. Also in the cast is Stephen Baldwin as Luke, and very impressive are Jeffrey Dean Morgan as Tom, and Troy Winbush as Lewis. The filmmakers made the most of every dollar they spent on this film, and gave their audience a fairly literate script, and an excellent cast. "Six: The Mark Unleashed" makes one think about the choices we make; as one character says at the end, "I still remember the last free choice I ever made...it was the wrong choice."

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2006-09-05

Great movie based on the end times. Not just for Christians, but anyone with an interest in set-in-the-near-future apocalyptic movies and tv shows.

One reviewer states that Revelation (singular, there's no 's' on the end of that) was a warning against worshipping Nero. To my knowledge Nero never forced everyone to get a mark so they could buy and sell, and Christians wouldn't need to be warned against worshipping Nero - that's covered in the 10 commandments. Please, PLEASE, if you must slag off Christianity, at least say something you can support. And to the guy who compares Christian martyrs with suicide bombers, the key difference is that Christian martyrs DIE for their faith, suicide bombers KILL for theirs.

Ignorance like these examples is one of the prevailing enemies which Christians face in the modern world. Look at what's going on in the world, advancements in bio-technology offer a possible mark of the beast, wars in the middle east which may lead to the seven year peace deal foretold in the Book of Daniel. It's coming, and I hope that you realise that before it's too late for you.

Any criticism of Christianity is accepted and endured, but critisicm of any other religion is called intolerant.

Intolerance works both ways.

The latest testosterone-saturated blow-'em-up from producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Michael Bay (The Rock, Bad Boys) continues Hollywood's millennium-fueled fascination with the destruction of our planet. There's no arguing that the successful duo understands what mainstream American audiences want in their blockbuster movies--loads of loud, eye-popping special effects, rapid-fire pacing, and patriotic flag waving.

Description

Bruce Willis and and an all-star cast of roughneck oil drillers blast off on a mission to save the planet in Michael Bay's doomsday space epic.

1. fatal 4 way for the world tag team champion ships
y2j & christian {the champs} vs booker t & christian vs the dudley boiz vs lance storm & william regal- This was not a bad way to klick off the show. It started out rather slow but as the match went along it picked up. Kind of predictable who the last two were. SOme nice moves including a lionsault from the middle rope. Good to see the unpredicatble finish. Winners and new wwe tag team champs booker t and goldust. Match rating 7/10.

2. Edge vs. Albert- This was a decent match from the standpoint of having albert in it. Edge tried his best in this match but even that was not enough. About a 9 minute match which was way to long. Edge carried ablert through but the dq ending was horriable. Winner by dq edge. Match rating 5.5/10.

3. Chris Beniot vs. Eddie guerrero- This was another great match and let me say rest in peace eddie u were one of the best and u will be missed greatly. Anyway this was probloy up there for match of the night tied with the mainn event. Soild wrestling match and both men put alot into the 15 minutes that they were given. Winn chris beniot. Match Rating 8.5/10.

4. Batistia vs. Kane- THis was your decent big man match. I always thought that batistia at that point in his game should have sticken to tag matches but he did a good job here. Lots of har hitting action that was sloppy at times but overall not that bad. Winner Batistia. Match Rating 6.5/10.

5. Trish vs. Jackylan vs. Victoria wwe womens title- This was an above average womens match. All of these women have alot of talent. This is when victoria just broke into the bussiness here and she did a really good job playing heel here. Soild wrestling and a god womens match. Winner and still wwe womens champ victoria. Match rating 6/10.

6. Kurt angle vs. The Big Show for the wwe title- This was alot better than alot of people thought it was going to be. Leaving lesner off of this card was awful but he did play a big part in this match. Match satrted off sow but thanks to kurt angle it picked up. Lots of near falls including n angle slam to the big show. Lesner came in and f-5ed the big show as well. Amazing strenght and the ending was awsome. I love angle. Winner and new wwe champ Kurt Angle. Match Rating 8/10.

7. HHH vs. Hbk 2 out of 3 falls for the WHT title- This was match of the night in my opiion. These two guys back in 2002 had some awsome matches together. The first fall was a street fight which had barb wire on fire chairs tables trash cans u name it they had it all. Second fall was a cage match whcihc was decent but only nine minutes and a sick part were hbk jumps off the top of the cage thorugh a table on hhh. The third fall was a ladder macth which was also awsome with hbk falling off the ladder though 4 tables. Winner and new world heavywieght champ HHH. Match rating 9/10.

Well that raps up another i would give Armageddon 2002 a grade of 50.5/70 which means htis is an awosme ppv. I would say thats good i would recomend this dvd to anyone. If you can tell me if my review was helpful or not i would appreicate that. Thanks for your time.

3rd fall-ladder match

this match woz fast 2 even faster than the cage match erm a few ladder spots like HHH gettin nailed in the hed by a ladder bt hbk but HBK woz so close 2 winning but HHH runs up and pushes the ladder and HBK goes crashing through all the tables the nature boi had laid out on the outside and HHH climbs the ladder and pulls the win and is the new heavy weight champion.
match rating 10/10

its worth it 2 buy it for the 3 stages of hell and eddie guerrero vs beniot and kane vs batista and maybe angle vs big show der da main 1s u wanna see.

This follow-up to Warlock boasts more sophisticated visual effects, slicker production values, and bigger (and bloodier) action, but fans of the original's dry wit and tight story may be disappointed. It's really more a rehash than a sequel. The Devil is up to his old tricks again, sending his favorite son (the title character) on a mission to recover six runes--ancient stones that will allow His Satanic Majesty to escape Hell and once again walk the Earth. Leading the forces of good are a group of modern-day druids and a pair of teenage lovers who have no idea they've been selected to save the world. There are some genuinely spooky moments, a few laughs, and some nice visual touches, but the scattershot script keeps throwing out one cool idea after another, hoping something sticks. On the other hand, if watching Julian Sands writhe on the ground spewing black blood sounds like a good time, this may be just the ticket. Gremlins star Zach Galligan has a cameo (as the boyfriend of the Warlock's mom!) --Geof Miller

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Wacky Magic Fun.......2004-11-02

I really enjoyed this movie. It's goofy and the Druids vs. the Warlock history is a bit silly but overall quite enjoyable. It has better pacing than the first film and seems less disjointed even though the Warlock's search for the runestones is told in a series of little vignette's. Some of the "druid training" scenes are quite beautiful with very creative direction to attain subtle effects which nicely contrast the Warlock's macabre magic.

As I said before the story is a little silly but I liked it better than the witch-hunter sent through time story of the first film and the forgettable kids in a haunted house approach of the third.

3 out of 5 stars ANTHONY HICKOX DOES IT AGAIN!.......2004-07-16

Warlock:The Armageddon is an enjoyable watch. I bought this DVD because 1.Anthony Hickox directed it. 2.Monika Schnarre has a small part in it. I hadn't seen it before when I purchased this film, but I enjoyed it. I love what Anthony Hickox did with this sequel. The special effects, a good cast. I love Paula Marshall (from 'Hellrasier 3)- what a talented and likeable actress. I got a thrill seeing Monika Schnarre again in a small part as a runway model.

I hope that anthony Hickox would make more films like this.

After The Exorcist sparked a lengthy trend of supernatural thrillers, this 1976 horror film scored a hit with critics and audiences for mixing gothic horror and mystery into its plot about a young boy suspected of being the personification of the anti-Christ. (No doubt it's a favorite of shock-rocker Marilyn Manson.) Directed by Richard Donner (best known for his Superman and Lethal Weapon films), The Omen gained a lot of credibility from the casting of Gregory Peck and Lee Remick as a distinguished American couple living in England, whose young son Damien bears "the mark of the beast." Mysterious deaths and unexplained incidents draw the attention of a photographer (David Warner), whose investigation leads to the young boy--and also to the photographer's shocking decapitation (in a scene that has since been inducted into the horror hall of fame). At a time when graphic gore had yet to dominate the horror genre, this film used its violence discreetly and to great effect, and the mood of dread and potential death is masterfully maintained. It's all a bit hokey, with a lot of biblical portent and sensational fury, but few would deny it's highly entertaining. Jerry Goldsmith's Oscar-winning score works wonders to enhance the movie's creepy atmosphere. --Jeff Shannon

Description

The first film in classic, four-part legacy of terror stars Gregory Peck as an ambassador who is talked into switching his wife's (Lee Remick) stillborn baby with an orphaned infant. When young Damien is Five, the horror begins with his nanny's dramatic suicide. As the death toll escalates, Damien's father, realizing his son is the antichrist, decides that he must kill the boy and rid the world of the evil.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Children are evil.......2007-05-19

The beauty of Christian mythology is its evergreen ability to inspire fresh fare on the counter-mythology scene. The Omen is a classic story of "The Beginning of The End" as Damien (the Antichrist) is born, and proceeds to make his unsuspecting parents a living Hell. This is of course th version to see - dated as it is. The remake circa 2005/6 was absolute crap. This movie shows how easily a truly evil spawn of "The Devil" could slip into society pretty much unnoticed and protected by the bleeding heart liberals ;-) who value life over principle. (woo hoo!) What makes this movie so good is the casting. They really picked a great kid for the part. You can see it in his eyes, which speak more eloquently than is possible for a brat of the age of 8 (or in my case 43), to do. Are you still reading this? Go watch the movie! You will enjoy it infinitely more than my meandering drivel.

4 out of 5 stars CREEPY CLASSIC AVOID THE REMAKE!.......2007-05-14

This movie is the best in the series and it still hold up well. Some genuinely scary moments in this classic thriller. The remake is pointless and adds nothing to the film. It isn't even scary as it tries to duplicate every scene in the original and fails!

5 out of 5 stars One of the best horror films ever made.......2007-05-09

The original 1976 Richard Donner film "The Omen" ranks high on my list of all-time favorite horror movies. You'll notice I wrote "original" in that sentence. That's because, I regret to inform you, Hollywood decided to lens a remake last year. Ugh. I haven't seen this "reimagining" yet, so maybe I shouldn't be too hard on it, but I can't picture anyone improving on the effectiveness of the original. Anyway, I would probably place "The Omen" in the top five of my abovementioned list. It's that good of a movie. I like Donner's film so much that I even went on to develop a fondness for the two inferior sequels that followed: "Damien: Omen II" and "Omen III: The Final Conflict". Both follow-ups possess their own little charms that make them worth viewing (love the guy wrapped in plastic swinging through the fire in the third entry), but neither exhibits the sheer power and originality of the first film. "The Omen" gives us everything a good horror movie should. We get scads of gothic atmosphere, satanic evil, original death sequences, amazing performances from a first rate cast, a memorable musical score, and scares aplenty. That's the best thing about "The Omen": it's deeply frightening on many levels.

As the film opens, we learn that powerful American businessman Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) has a serious problem. His wife Kathy (Lee Remick), finally in a position to give the couple their first child, loses the baby in a hospital in Rome. Since she doesn't yet know the child died during birth, Robert conspires with a priest named Spiletto (Martin Benson) to hide the fact from his wife. They substitute another baby born that day and no one seems any worse for the wear. The couple, with their new son Damien (Harvey Stephens) in tow, proceeds to live what promises to be an enormously privileged life. Their fortunes increase further when Robert receives an ambassadorship to England. But there are problems aplenty, disturbing problems that point to something seriously amiss. For example, Damien's nanny takes her life in a very public manner during the young child's birthday party. Her replacement, the sinister Mrs. Baylock (Billie Whitelaw), seems an odd choice as a nanny. That she's so overprotective of little Damien also seems weird. Another problem emerges when Kathy starts expressing doubts about Damien's lineage. She thinks he's not her real child.

She's right, of course, but that knowledge won't save anyone. You see, Damien Thorn is the anti-Christ, the son of Satan come to fulfill biblical prophecies concerning the end of time. No one knows this little factoid at this point, but Robert Thorn soon begins hearing about it from Father Brennan (Patrick Troughton), a crazed priest who starts stalking Thorn and raving about his evil child. After Brennan perishes in a bizarre accident, an investigative journalist by the name of Keith Jennings (David Warner) uncovers a few horrific pieces of evidence that tend to confirm that Damien Thorn is, indeed, the son of Satan. With proof in hand, Jennings eventually makes a believer out of Robert Thorn. The two then begin a secretive quest to unearth Damien's true origins, but they'll have to hurry. Folks poking into the child's history, or even people who present some sort of obstacle to the boy's development, seem to die in excruciatingly painful ways. As the story unfolds, we learn that even Robert and Kathy Thorn aren't safe from the pint-sized prince of darkness. The only solution to the problem comes in the form of an old archeologist named Bugenhagen (Leo McKern) and a bag of ancient daggers...

Rewatching "The Omen" for the umpteenth time, on DVD no less, confirms for me once again that this movie achieves a greatness rarely seen in the annals of horror. Just look at the movie. Where else are you going to see a nanny hanging herself in public, a priest impaled with a steel rod, a beheading by shattered glass, and biblical mumbo jumbo all in a film starring Gregory Peck? Nowhere, my friends, nowhere. It's all here in glorious color. I love everything about the film. I love the cemetery scene with the wild dogs. I love the "666" birthmark on the kid's head, revealed in a truly terrifying scene. I love the weird images in Keith Jennings's photos. I love the showdown between Mrs. Baylock and Robert Thorn. I love the screaming fit outside the church as well as the zoo attack. I even love the "No, Daddy, NO!" line at the end of the film. The movie simply overflows with all sorts of clever ideas and bloody mayhem wrapped up in excellent acting and dialogue. In the hands of lesser mortals, "The Omen" would come off as a schlocky piece of cheese. With Donner at the helm, Jerry Goldsmith composing the score of his life, and Peck and Remick carrying the acting duties, the movie fires on all cylinders.

I rented the DVD not because I needed to see the film again, but because I wanted to listen to Donner's commentary track. It's good. He recounts all sorts of interesting tidbits about the movie, such as the curse that seemed to plague the production. The director also talks about the problems he had with the young Harvey Stephens, who apparently was a little devil in real life, and talks about the marketing of the picture. Other extras include an interview with composer Jerry Goldsmith, a trailer for the film, and a couple of lengthy featurettes that go into more depth about the film and the supposed curse. As for audio and picture quality, I've seen some people griping about them. I don't have a problem here. I thought the movie sounded and looked great. So there you go. If you haven't seen the original Omen flick, you simply must run out and find a copy right now. You'll have a great time watching this creative, scary horror flick!

5 out of 5 stars I'm not a horror fan, but this film was terrific! Wonderfully scary!.......2007-02-07

This movie's been showing a lot on the HD channels, and I'm a big Gregory Peck fan, so I figured, why not? Wow! What a great surprise. A horror film that's actually SCARY, and not simply gross or disgusting. Great acting by both Peck and Remmick, great pacing by Donner and Baird (the film editor) and FANTASTIC SCORE!! Creeping suspense, mixed with satanic sons, demonic dogs and nannies with knives, cultimating in some totally wicked good vs. evil, all against a totally belivable contemporary (for the time) atmosphere. In my opinion, this film has aged very little, apart from clothes and hairstyles. What's nice is that the violence is used with such sparing effect, it really hits you when you're shocked. And if anybody else noticed, there's no profanity at all in this movie, which keeps you from being distracted from the story (my favorite words have only four letters, but sometimes it's nice not to get an earful just so a film can prove itself as 'adult').
Highly recommended!! Especially for those who generally wouldn't consider themselves 'horror' fans. For those who like a great story, good suspense, and great acting, this is definitely a classic!! But don't touch the sequals!!

3 out of 5 stars NOT A BIG OMEN FAN!.......2007-02-05

ORDERED THIS ONE FOR MY BROTHER-IN-LAW. I'M SURE IT'S A GOOD MOVIE IF YOU ARE A OMEN FAN. GREGORY PECK WAS A GREAT ACTOR, AND I PREFER HIM IN DIFFERENT ROLES.

5 out of 5 stars Companion to the Book of the Same Name.......2007-02-01

Isn't God Great! After I had read THE LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH, a civilian movie house was showing this movie near Aberdeen Proving Grounds and I went with a friend to see it! This cetainly reinforced the message of the book! (I also have a copy of it on VHS from my aunt.) I think this coindcidence was another example of God's Providence dircting the events of my life! Orson Wells' the narrator, was a good dramatic narrator. Wasn't he the one that had produced the big radio drama hoax THE WAR OF THE WORLDS? that scared the death out of so many people on the Halloween of long ago? One interpretation of Armageddon is that angeles like aliens in UFO's (or chariots in Bible language) from Heaven might accompany Christ at his Second Coming and wipe out all the anti-Christians.
This movie had some interesting small mention of how some students of the Bible had associated Adolph Hitler with the Antichrist, but Hal thought this was laughable. Some serious German minsters like Dietrich Bonhoffer did actually believe that Hilter was indeed the Antichrist. And he lost his life for speaking out against Hitler on the radio.
It is nice to hear how some serious thinking scientists do see the end coming to mankind. Things like Global Warming, Acid Rain, overpopulatiuon and famine. And I do know what was said about the Hebrew Prophets that if they did not predict things with 100% accuracy, they were put to death under the Old Testament Law.
I know that I have critics already that run me down becuase I am a divorced and am still looking for a wife. I have seen on the Wilkerpedia that Hal Lindsey has been married four time!
I have seen this movie four or five times.
The US military takes Hal Lindsey, his teachings and opinions so serioulsy that he supposedly lectures at some US War College for officers in Washington DC. I had read this on some liberal website that was critical of Hal Lindsey. But to me that kind of respect from the military of his opinions only makes him look more intelligent to me-not some WACO WACKO- like my government enemies in Toledo call me!

5 out of 5 stars Truth be told.......2006-03-14

People don't want to look at the obvious fact that this world is falling apart. this flys in the face of evolution which says we are getting smarter and better but a simple look at the billions of people living in poverty and the daily disasters in the news tell us of the grim truth, that the Bile is Right! Hal Lindsey does an excelent job of explaining some of the last days events (the times we are living in) and how they are culminating into the global judgments listed in Revelation and the prophets.
If this movie doesn't open your eyes to the truth of God's Word and how it is being played out in the news today, nothing will.

3 out of 5 stars When The Sun Goes Nova.......2005-12-30

Hal Lindsays' teaching on Biblical prophecy as encapsulated in his best-selling book 'The Late Great Planet Earth' had a major effect on evangelical Protestantism during the decade of the '70's. An effect so profound that just about every pastor teaching prophecy today approaches the subject using the same methodological framework that Hal made so popular a quarter of a century ago.

This DVD released in '78 is a visual restatement of Hal Lindsay's prophetical teachings. Now that some 27 years have passed since it's release the information contained upon this disc is far from cutting edge material. It does however serve as a fascinating timecapsule concerning many of the current events of that generation and the theological underpinnings of how the Church interpreted those events from a Biblical perspective.

Whether you buy into the "End of the World" scenario as presented by Evangelical Christianity or not it's worthy of at least one viewing. There might even be a few surprises that you didn't expect.

3 out of 5 stars Hal Lindsey - Father of modern eschatology.......2005-11-22

Please ignore the bigoted comments of the person above who obviously has an axe to grind with Christians. This movie left quite an impression with me as a teenager. Hal is a dedicated student of Bible prophecy and his book from which this movie is based has sold 10 million copies since it came out in the late 60's.

Hal Lindsey is not a prophet, nor ever claims to be one: He is simply a scholar of Bible prophecy that is unafraid to speculate on the meaning of the imagery presented in the book of Revelation. Keep in mind he saw the Islamic threat long before it became national headlines.

Yes, we are probably safe from killer bees. But with the current wars, rumors of wars, pestilences, earthquakes, tsunamis and hurricanes Hal's movie is more relevant than ever.

1 out of 5 stars Hal Lindsay, False Prophet.......2004-12-14

"It's almost as if we had an unconscious desire to see the biblical prophesies fulfilled," frets narrator Orson Welles in this classic piece of Christian fearmongering. Quietly insane evangelical minister Hal Lindsay attempts to marry revelation to then-current affairs in an effort to prepare us for the armageddon that lies just around the corner. Obviously, with 25 years of hindsight, we now know he was wrong, and continues to be wrong, but had really swingin' fashion sense circa 1976.

Many actual scientists and deep thinkers appear on screen in LATE GREAT PLANET EARTH, and you'd be forgiven if you felt that some of them (who are clearly talking along evolutionary lines) were being taken out of context to support Lindsay's crackpot theories. Lindsay's apocalypse is scotch-taped together out of all the Bad News that was available at the time of production. Thus, Lindsay's world was set to end as a result of any number of nasty afflictions. Recombinant DNA! Brazilian killer bees! Viruses from Hell! Atheists and witches run amok! And, as Orson says, "Nucular" Holocaust. It's Hal's nauseating belief that if you don't have hardcore Christian faith, then your ONLY possible options are witchcraft, astrology, transcendental meditation, Hare Krishnas or the Rev. Sun Myung-moon's wacky Reunification Church! In any case, Hal sez you haven't got a prayer.

As always, Hal saves the best for last, enlightening us as to the coming of the antichrist, a figure he believes is alive today (at least as of 1976), and who would achieve omnipotence through seemingly good deeds and the establishment of world peace before enslaving everyone with microchip implants supplied by the then-fledgling computer industry. Or something. Apparently, only those who heed Hal's book and movie can avoid falling under the spell of this evil maniac. He then proceeds to illustrate his argument with imagery designed to stoke the usual cold-war paranoia: before or around 1982, sez Hal, Russia and China will invade the middle east (didn't happen), the European market will grow to a prophesied ten member nations (25 and counting and still no armageddon), and the "nucular" bombs will rain from the skies like the falling stars seen by the biblical John on his island retreat (well, we're still waiting!). Nonetheless, this allows the filmmakers to go mad with stock footage, a delirious and depressing exercise in escalating doom that runs a full six minutes, unnarrated. Oh, the humanity!

Just because Christians love to fulfill prophesies, or see fulfilment where none rationally exists, doesn't mean the prophets were right. It just means that we'll always have to live with people like Hal, desperate to prove their "faith" has substance rather than just keeping it to themselves, and actually learning from it.

As the first person to post a review of this title, I CAN, however, prophecize that many if not ALL the reviews that come after this date, shall be posted by "believers" and Hal Lindsay fartcatchers who shall offer no pertinent details to even remotely suggest that they've actually watched this DVD! Praise!! Verily, they shall only make sweeping comments about the greatness of Hal Lindsay and his books, and how the times we live in today truly are the end of times because of all the bad things they only seem capable of noticing in the world. One shall even claim that people are ACTUALLY IGNORANT of all the disasters happening in the world, as if such NATURAL AND MAN-MADE OCCURENCES are acts of God, and then they shall, rather appropriately, refer to the Bible as "the bile." You just watch. Here endeth the lesson.

Oh, by the way, the Trinity DVD is full-frame, from a tolerable print. No restoration appears to have been done, nor was the film worth any, so dirt and scratches are evident. Sound is undistinguished mono. Extras include a "making-of" theatrical trailer and TV spot, plus a documentary, common to many Trinity discs, called "How American Cinema Changed Hollywood Forever," in which reps for the company grossly overinflate their importance in the Hollywood food chain of the 1970's.

Description

When his wife Katherine's (Lee Remick) pregnancy ends in a stillbirth in a Rome hospital, U.S. diplomat Robert Thorn (Gregory Peck) adopts another baby, whose mother died. Damien thrives as a normal child until, at his fifth birthday party, his nanny mysteriously dies; Father Brennan also dies after warning Thorn that he has adopted Lucifer's son. Thorn's fears escalate when a photographer shows him pictures from Damien's party with marks suggesting how the nanny and Brennan would die. Thorn seeks out an exorcist who confirms Damien's identity and tells Thorn that the only solution is to kill his adopted son.
