In 1972 a chartered plane carrying a Uruguayan rugby squad and various family members crashed in the Andes. If that sounds dry and matter-of-fact, you haven't seen director Frank Marshall's harrowing re-creation Alive, an adrenaline-pounding, heart-in-your-mouth spectacle that kicks off this famous story of survival. The real-life against-all-odds odyssey made worldwide headlines when it became known that the survivors ate their own dead to survive. What could have easily become sensationalistic exploitation is treated with compassion and dignity by Marshall as he explores their moral and spiritual struggles as well as their physical ordeal. As team captain and base-camp cheerleader Vincent Spano slowly collapses under the stress and Ethan Hawke rouses from mourning his dead family to taking charge of saving himself, it also becomes a portrait in leadership, hope, and emotional courage. --Sean Axmaker

Amazon.com essential video

If you're not a connoisseur of graphic horror and gruesome gore, you'd better steer clear of this wicked 1992 horror-comedy from the demented mind and delirious camera of New Zealand-born writer-director Peter Jackson. However, if nonstop mayhem and extreme violence are your idea of great entertainment, you're sure to appreciate Jackson's gleefully inventive approach to a story that can judiciously be described as sick, twisted, and totally outrageous. The movie's central character is a poor schmuck named Lionel who's practically enslaved to his domineering mother. But when ol' Mum gets bitten by a rare and poisonous rat monkey from Skull Island and is turned into a flesh-eating zombie, Lionel has the unfortunate task of keeping Mama happy while fending off all the other zombies that result from her voracious feeding frenzies. If you've read this far, you'll either be crying out for censorship or eagerly awaiting your first viewing (or second, or third...) of this wildly clever and audaciously uninhibited movie. And while director Jackson would later achieve critical success with his fact-based drama Heavenly Creatures, his talent is readily evident in this earlier effort. If you find this kind of thing even remotely appealing, consider Dead Alive a must-see movie. --Jeff Shannon

Amazon.com

Peter Jackson proves that if gory is funny, then excessive gory is downright hysterical. As our hapless hero wades through an ankle-deep puddle of blood and entrails, brandishing a lawnmower like a portable Cuisinart at the climax of this zombie-fest, you'll either be screaming with laughter or fleeing in disgust. Timothy Balme stars as the shy mama's boy Lionel, whose controlling shrew of a mother (Elizabeth Moody) starts rotting away, literally, with a vague supernatural disease. Mother dies but refuses to stay down, rising as a flesh-eating zombie infecting everyone she bites. Lionel tries to hide her in the basement, but the victims keep piling up and finally break out when Lionel's blackmailing uncle (a grotesque, leering Ian Watkin) throws a party in the house. It's snack time as the guests become undead hors d'oeuvres and rise again as hungry soldiers of the new zombie army marching on Lionel and his girl Pacquita (the lovely Diana Penalver). New Zealand goremeister Jackson pulls out all stops in this truly outrageous sanguinary comedy, from gross-out gags of oozing puss and rotting body parts at a formal dinner to slapstick antics as Lionel tries to keep his flesh-hungry mother sedated during the funeral to the final Freudian showdown between a now-monstrous mother and the newly liberated Lionel. If you like your horror with a sense of humor or your comedy with gristle, then wade through this taboo-busting bucket of blood. --Sean Axmaker

5 out of 5 stars Stunning!.......2007-06-27

What can i say about this movie is STUNNING! What else can you expect from one of the great movie director in the world?

5 out of 5 stars Hilarious! Absolutely Fantastic!.......2007-06-20

I purchased this movie based on all the good reviews and we are definately not disappointed. My boyfriend and I absolutely loved it! It had an interesting plot line and the zombie gore was very original. The way the zombies looked, the things they did and the way they were killed was great! I'm sorry I can't tell you any more without giving anything away. If you like zombies and comedy, I would highly recommend this movie. We are still talking about it!

5 out of 5 stars SPLATSTICK AT IT'S GORIEST!!!!!!!!.......2007-06-09

I am ashamed to admitt that(being the horror buff that I am) up until about a year ago I have never heard of this movie!! I new Peter Jackson made a few horror films before L.O.T.R., and had seen The Frighteners, and heard about his first film, Bad Taste. I had heard about this movie from a friend then seen it reviewed on BRAVO'S Even Scairer Movie Moments so I decided to pick it up. Boy, was I ever blown away!! This has to be one of the goriest movies ever made. The catch is it's not realistic nor is it exploitive, what it is is the text-book definition of splatstick horror comedy. If you loved "The Evil Dead 2" then you absolutly MUST see this movie The violence and gore in Dead Alive(and there is more than you could ever imagine) are used to compilment the humor. I'm not into giving spoilers so I'll give a brief overview. Lionel is a very repressed person. One day Lionel is at the zoo with a girl he is sweet on and his very overbearing mother. His mother is bitten by the dreaded Sumatran Rat Monkey and soon dies, but what kind of horror movie would this be if she were to stay dead. It's pretty easy to see what happens next, mother returns, Lionel tries to hide her, she bites and infects others. The result is the goriest sluaghterfest ever put to film. What can I do for not seeing this gem sooner? Watching everyday would certainly not be a crime!!!

5 out of 5 stars Few (if any) zombie films are more entertaining. None are more gory........2007-06-04

The goriest film ever made is like a big roller coaster: it will be a fun ride for most but it will make some nauseus.

This is one of those very few films that grabs you in the opening sequence and refuses to let go until the credits roll. Dead Alive ABSOLUTELY refuses to compromise. There is no such thing as too gross in this film: Needle in the brain, puss in pudding, guts that turn into some creature of its own, lost arms and/or legs, deformed zombie child, and much, much more. You name it, they got it.

But don't let all of the grossness deceive you. If you know that all of it is special effects, it actually is a very fun ride.

This is a film that most people, especially men, can enjoy (an obvious exception being very small children). What makes this film work, more than anything else, is feeling that the people who made it had a fun time making it. And that's what really counts.

5 out of 5 stars MCQUEEN IS GREAT IN SEASON TWO.......2007-04-30

I have seen most of the episodes for season two and Mcqueen is more comfortable in the character of Josh Randall then he was in season one. In fact some of these episodes are more of a comedy than a drama. In Wanted Dead or Alive Steve Mcqueen shows why he was the top box office star of the 60s and 70s. I must buy for a Steve Mcqueen fan.

5 out of 5 stars Josh and His "Mare's Laig" Ride Again! ! ! !".......2007-04-01

One of the most memorable and famous characters of the '50's Western genre was Steve McQueen's "Josh Randall", who spoke softly (with the Southern drawl he cultivated in his early days roaming around the South, particularly Myrtle Beach, S.C.) and carried a Big Gun, the sawed-off Winchester lever-action rifle then known as the "Mare's Laig". I remember the excitement each week eagerly waiting for each episode of this great Western.
It's release on DVD has been just too long a wait!
One of my fondest childhood memories was the weekend I spent with my Dad, helping him to hand make my own custom-made leather belt rig from scratch for my toy "Mare's Laig" in time for use as part of a Halloween costume when the plastic original proved to be a poor replica.
With all the second- and third-rate wastage flooding the DVD market lately, it's really great to see SOMEBODY bring back such a great actor in this really great Western!

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson and the rest of Heart are in good form in this solid if unspectacular 100-minute concert video, shot in 2002 in their hometown of Seattle. The sisters, of course, are a good deal older than in Heart's '70s heyday, and their bandmates have changed, but the group's sound, led by Ann's powerful vocals and Nancy's instrumental versatility, hasn't changed much; that's a good thing for those who revel in the likes of "Barracuda," "Magic Man," and other oldies. There are several brand-new songs here as well, and the ongoing influence of Led Zeppelin is readily apparent, not only in the covers of Zep classics like "Black Dog" and "The Battle of Evermore" but also in Heart's commingling of pastoral acoustic sounds and hard rock. And after 19 songs, even the most ardent Heart lovers should be well satisfied. --Sam Graham

Description

Music's most famous sisters, Ann and Nancy Wilson, have been successfully writing and performing chart-toppers since their 1975 debut album. From acoustic to folk to hard-driving rock 'n' roll, the ladies instill emotional energy into every song. This special hometown concert showcases a rich musical legacy that's distinctively Heart! Songs: Barracuda, Sister Wild Rose, Mistral Wind, Wild Child, Dog and Butterfly, Magic Man, Crazy on You, Dreamboat Annie, Love Alive, These Dreams, Alone, Two Faces of Eve, Break the Rock, Heaven, Straight On, Black Dog, The Witch, Mona Lisa and Mad Hatters, Battle of Evermore.

4 out of 5 stars Heart - Alive in Seattle ( DVD ).......2007-06-10

Sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson set the stage alight on their homecoming tour with a new set of musicians. Performed in 2002 at the Paramount Theatre in Seattle, the DVD is well produced with clear, crisp and vibrant colours. Audio sound is good in 5.0 surround ( Dolby or DTS modes )or 2.0 Stereo. Although there is no .1 for the subwoofer input bass is solid and adequate. Favourite hits like the acoustic " These Dreams " and " Alone " bring out the strong vocals of Ann, the lead singer. The more rock n roll " Love Alive " and feet stomping " Barracuda " show off Nancy's guitar virtuosity. Addition tracks from Led Zep's " Battle of Evermore" and " Black Dog " make this DVD a must have for any fan of Heart.

5 out of 5 stars One Of These Dreams For A Long-Time Heart Fan.......2007-05-16

I always had been a Heart fan. I love any group with female vocalists (in case you can't tell by my other reviews).

This project deals both with the Heart Classics and more contemporary songs. I did notice that Heart is going back to their roots, which is included by the song selection. For example, they had five songs from their first two projects, but only one song each from the two albums that revived their career in the mid-80's ("Heart" and "Bad Animals"), those songs being "These Dreams" (I liked "What About Love" and "Never" from the same project better) and "Alone". Furthermore, the music was more guitar based as Heart originally was. And I was happy with the fact that they included "Love Alive".

In addition to their own material, which featured some new songs, they also did a couple of covers: Elton John's "Mona Lisas and Mad Hatters", and Annie doing her best Robert Plant on "Black Dog".

One thing I like is that they took risks of jazzing up a couple of songs. For example, they slowed down the final verse and ending of "Crazy On You" (one of my two favorite "Heart" songs, with "Love Alive" being the other). Also, an acoustic guitar replaced the piano on "Alone".

If you're a Heart fan, you will enjoy this project.

5 out of 5 stars Goosebumps!!!.......2007-05-08

While I was watching this, I literally had goosebumps many times. Why? Ann Wilson's voice sounds as good, if not better than it did back in the 70's. The same cannot be said for many of that era's great singers, if they are even still around. I also thought the material from what was to become 'Jupiter's Darling' was very good.

5 out of 5 stars The Heart of Rock N Roll!.......2007-04-14

Just saw Alive in Seattle on April 14, 2007 - what a cure from the SAD blizzard & winter storms here in Traverse City over Easter time. Read all the reviews and I became compelled (as always after hearing & seeing Heart) to add another. I wholeheartedly agree with all that gave the DVD five stars. Quite simply: with a state of art home theatre & HDTV the performance excels. Mine is an LG 30" Flat CRT HDTV with a Yahama 5.1 home theatre system. The yami has a nifty 6.1 matrix emulation which puts you figuratively sitting cross-legged in the Wilson sister's laps for their awesome sound. The thing is that inevitably you will get up and start dancing!

Yes the audio only tops out at DTS 5.0 so the sub-woofer is `missing' but guess what? With a system like a Yahama you can kinda adjust for it and what is truly nice is to actually hear the music & singing clearly through-out - think immersive. With a large screen over 40" you may forget like I did more than once that I was not there that night in Seattle. Considering the video production elements - at least it was not some Hollywood production that made you wonder how they did the special effects. You could see up close & personal - reminiscent of the concert back in the late 70s at Charlevoix's Castle Farms.

And the song selection? It was great since it left you wanting more . . . like some of the other hits I heard at Pine Knob in the early 80s. Now if only we can get the ladies to perform one night during Interlochen's summer festival (imagine the Battle for Evermore or Mistral Wind echoing off Green Lake) - if Ian Anderson and The Moody Blues could play there then why not Heart?

Highly recommended--for Saturday Night Fever completists and connoisseurs of bad movies. This notable dud updates the story of Tony Manero (John Travolta), the disco prince from Fever, as he heads across the river to Manhattan and tries to make it as a dancer on Broadway. Someone had the bright idea of handing Staying Alive to Sylvester Stallone, who directed and cowrote the screenplay (and pops up in a shameless two-second cameo). Stallone gives the picture the pumped-up Rocky treatment, and completely misses the dance-floor excitement of Saturday Night Fever. Travolta tries to recapture his signature role, but this is one of the movies that put his career into its pre-Pulp Fiction deep freeze. The action culminates in a laughable Broadway opening night that really should be seen to be disbelieved. --Robert Horton

3 out of 5 stars An entertaining cable TV watch. Nothing else........2007-04-29

I wouldn't recommend paying to see this in general. Its not great ,but its a million times better than Grease 2. If you have nothing else better to do, its a decent flick to see. I've seen it twice out of sheer Saturday mid-day boredom. Its entertaining, completely copies "Saturday Night Fever" minus everything that made it legendary. This time its a broadway show! Oh wow, way to step it up! Nothing special. It tries. Ultimately TNT should buy the rights because its only good for cable.

1 out of 5 stars embarrassing.......2007-01-11

I think this movie just falls into the so bad it's good category. It's like a car wreck, you can't look at it but can't look away. I actually squirm with embarrassment for the actors at times. Sylvestor Stallone having the nerve to copy Alfred Hitchcock when he would always appear at some point in his movies for a second is just plain vanity showing, but he doesn't seem to understand that he is not even close to Alfred's league. And the guy playing the director of the show that Tony is in, I don't think I've ever seen a grown man wearing boots to the knee that wasn't doing some kind of work that required protecting your lower legs, or on a safari or something, yet he struts around with his pants tucked into them, I guess the height of fashion in the early 80's. The music was ok overall, but not anywhere matching Saturday Night Fever, although I did like Cynthia Rhodes singing ( if that's her singing and not a voice dubbed in), and liked her in general. And when he's waiting for a call from the show to see if he get's in it, he's strutting around the lobby of his apartment building with this little transistor radio, with music coming out of it like it's a Bose radio. And the ridiculous show he's supposed to be in, no one in their right minds would pay money to see it. Yet, I still occasionally pull it out and watch it, I really don't know why, there is no explanation for it and no defense for it. As for some of the reviewers who gave it 5 stars, good god, you people must have only seen 3 movies in your lives, Ishtar, Howard the Duck , and Staying Alive. In this is the case, then Staying Alive is indeed a great movie. Watch a real great movie and do a comparison. However, I have to say John Travolta sure had a great body in it, then you see him approx. 20 years later and he let his body go to pot in Pulp Fiction.

5 out of 5 stars good as it gets.......2006-03-09

this is one of those movies that you need to watch when you have a hankering for the guilty pleasure of spandex, sequins, the bee gees and primiscuous loving. I think everyone who has seen saturday night fever needs to own this. and those who haven't seen it need to watch it

3 out of 5 stars chaos princess.......2006-02-09

I really wanted to like this movie more. Travolta is still the man Tony Monero, but I think the film lack the depth in the charcters that Saturday Night Fever. Travolta though can still shake what his mama gave him.

1 out of 5 stars Should be "No stars".......2005-09-21

This was one gawdawful movie. I have never seen "Saturday Night Fever" and this is the first time I saw the sequel, and it was just horrid. The story was dull, the dancing was mediocre, and the characters generated little interest. Cynthia Rhodes was the only redeeming actor here. The Broadway show "Satans Alley" was so silly, it was more comedy than great dancing. It nearly reaches the "so bad its good" status, but not quite. Stay away, unless you want to be reminded of the worst of the 80's, tacky outfits, bad music and all.

5 out of 5 stars UNA HISTORIA PARA AMAR EL DESEO DE VIVIR!!.......2007-06-30

4 out of 5 stars Snowbound.......2007-05-28

I really like this movie. Not only is it factual but it makes you want to cheer those who survived on. I loved the documentary at the end of the movie where they talk to the NOW, survivors, 20 years later.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most underrated films from the 1990's.......2007-03-01

From Chasing Amy to Saving Private Ryan most of the great films from the 1990's got the enthusiastic reviews they deserved when they were first released. Alive however, did not. Roger Ebert insisted that it was simply impossible for a film to convey the magnitude of the experience that the Andes survivors endured and therefore deemed the film unsuccessful. Others were bothered by the overt religious elements, in spite of the fact all of the main characters were practicing Catholics. Some critics actually complained that the cast was too good looking and yet photos of the actual twentysomething players of the time generally show them to have been just as photogenic in real life. In perhaps the most predictable response, many critics resorted to dismissive one-liners and mockery to hide their discomfort with the fact that the film features cannibalism as a key element. About the only element that seemingly impressed everyone was the opening plane crash sequence which builds suspense effortlessly and which utilizes charmingly simple and scary special effects from ILM.

Alive was directed by Gary Marshall and his straightforward, unpretentious work here calls to mind nothing as much as the unsentimental, straightforward adventure films of Howard Hawks. The naturalistic visual style devoid of arty flourishes, the emphasis on group male dynamics in extreme circumstances and a fundamental humanity in it's view of the characters.

That this stark film got produced by Kathleen Kennedy, a producer responsible for the most mainstream and peppy fare of the 80's and 90's is remarkable in itself and at least makes for a good story in the supplementary material when director Marhsall refers to a certain bumper sticker about rugby players. The encounter with that sticker apparently was the impetus for him feeling that he "had" to make it. Marshall may never again make a film like it but Alive is a classic of its kind in my view. The screenplay is by John Patrick Shanley who earlier penned Moonstruck, one of the all-time great New York movies, the shimmeringly crisp cinematography is by Peter James who was probably chosen because of his superb work on the earlier Canadian film Black Robe and editor Michael Kahn later went on to edit Spielberg's Saving Private Ryan.

Alive is based on the book by Piers Paul Read and the filmmakers utilized one of the survivors as a consultant for accuracy. Alive clearly shows why every single person down to the last man and woman opted to eat their dead rather than perish on that mountain and the films examination of the stark choice the survivors confronted is dealt with in all its complexity. The survivors initial reluctance is gradually worn down by not only sheer hunger but also a genuine pragmatism and spiritual undertanding of the dilemma. Certainly, if the men had felt that their actions were prohibited by religious dogma they would have chosen a different course. Nowhere here will you find the simplistic approach toward the matter that has always characterized horror films like Ravenous with their judgemental view that crossing this line makes one a moral monster, irregardless of circumstance.

Alive has minor flaws but none seriously detract from the overall experience. Some of the dialogue here and there is a bit clunky (or perhaps is just delivered that way), the opening and closing voiceover by John Malkovich is intrusive and uneccessary not least because he doesn't resemble in the slightest any of the Uruguyan characters physically. Then there is the undeniable fact that the actors simply didn't starve themelves enough to look as thin as the real survivors certainly did. Really though, until Christian Bale set the bar higher (or is it lower?) with his massive weight-loss in The Mechanic, it wasn't generally deemed necessary for actors to undergo huge physical weight transformations for a role.

When all is said and done perhaps what most critics found hardest to stomach is the way that the inspirational constantly rubs shoulders with the gruesome in this particular film. As the camera pans over a line of bodies face down in the snow the cheerful 70's hit Do You Know the Way to San Jose blares from a transistor radio and as the music soars and the handful of survivors rejoice in the final scene, one can't help notice the stripped skeletons laying nearby. Alive IS ultimately hopeful and a testament to survival but not before giving due credit to the grim reaper.

4 out of 5 stars Alive.......2007-01-03

This is definatly a movie for anyone who likes true stories. Starts off with plenty of action and drama. And as the movie goes along it keeps you in suspense. I found myself yelling at the screen.

5 out of 5 stars GOOD GUYS - BAD GUYS .......2007-06-15

The mystery and intrigue sets an excellent pace to figuring who to root for.
Nick Randall, bounty hunter - the hunted deserved everything they got.
Don't mess with his friend or his girl. Or there will be hell to pay.

Malak Al Rahim - made one huge mistake - he messed with both.

Randall was smart enough to make the stake-out and his FBI friend made him. The stake-out was stupid enough to walk into his end.

Really like the loft living area that Randall had and kept his friend's bike there. Ah well, the blonde wig done him in.

Rutger Hauer can not top "Ladyhawk"'s Navarre for a romantic image but his Randall character [and others] "Blind Fury" and "Split Secong" - just prove his acting ability - oh yes, "Bladerunner" [gross] to mention a few.

DEFINITELY RECOMMENDED - great collection for viewing.

4 out of 5 stars Pointless 80's Action Hero Drivel - But Fun To Watch!.......2007-05-11

Wanted Dead Or Alive was one of those out-of-control lone wolf cop movies that came out in droves in the mid-to-late 80s. All these movies (Cobra, Runaway, Die Hard, Lethal Weapon, etc....) aspired to be Dirty Harry. Some succeeded, most did not. Wanted Dead or Alive was Rutger Hauer's turn at playing the vigilante cop living on the edge. Watching it now, this movie is hilarious. Since his role as the terrorist in Night Hawks (Sylvester Stallone & Bily Dee Willams) and his role as the psycho in The Hitcher, Hauer seemed to be lapsing in the tough-as nails roles. Wanted Dead Or Alve does nothing to bring him back. Rutger Hauer is one of those actors that just play a better villian. As a villian, Hauer is creepy, vile, ruthless and cold. As the good guy, just not as believable. The saving grace of this predictable action cop movie is Gene Simmons (KISS) as the evil terrorist. He must have taken notes from Hauer, because he is ruthless and cold. He shoots without flinching. Great role for him. Overall, Wanted Dead or Alive is a fun watch mostly for the nostalgic 80s feel and for Gene Simmons'turn as a psycho killer.

Dig It!

4 out of 5 stars wanted dead or alive.......2007-03-22

I have been a fan of Rutger Hauer since BLADE RUNNER,I think he is a fabulous actor and does justice to any part he is in.Wanted dead or alive is no exception, he gets the bad guys like no one else, i get a real kick of satisfaction as he disposes of each villan. The guy from KISS with the big tongue did a suprisingly good job as the terrorist to. LOVED IT.....

4 out of 5 stars Now I'm satisfied.......2007-05-20

When I first received this I was disappointed because it was not working correctly with my XBOX 360 HD-DVD player. This was not the fault of the disc but because of the programming in the player. Since the new 360 update all is well and I now own a great show.

5 out of 5 stars Works flawlessly on Xbox 360 after 5/15/07 HD-DVD update.......2007-05-16

My Xbox 360 drive had problems playing this HD-DVD until the 5/15/07 HD-DVD update from Microsoft. Now, in addition to the performance, the menus and everything works flawlessly. The picture quality of the concert is amazing. Except for CG movies like Happy Feet or Ant Bully, this is probably one of the best HD discs out there. On top of that Ann Wilson's vocals are just awesome. The Wilson sisters sound as good as they do on the audio CDs. I would highly recommend this HD-DVD to anyone who has ever heard one of Hearts songs. My favorite has to be "Straight On" and their cover of Led Zeppelin's "Black Dog".

5 out of 5 stars Rented it and I liked it so much I bought it.......2007-05-15

I originally received the HD-DVD from Netflix and was impressed by the overall quality of this release. Heart was uber-huge back in the day, but they feel comfortable and confident as they play smaller audiences--quality over quantity. Ann still has that incredible voice, my wife, who was not particularly familiar with the band, was won over by Nancy's passion and spirit.

4 out of 5 stars NOT TOO OLD.......2007-04-10

Heart still has it and both sisters could still sing in 2001 (when made) if your a heart fan get it

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding performance and video quality...it DOES work on the 360!.......2007-03-25

Like Robert A. Rhode says below, this HD-DVD does indeed work on the Xbox 360 add-on. I received my copy from Netflix originally, and when I tried it, I couldn't get it to work on my 360. I sent it back, saying the disc was broken. I purchased a new one from Amazon, thinking it was really a physical error, and had the same result initially. I did some research and ran across these ratings. I did what Robert said to try and it worked. You simply:

- Put the DVD in and let it get to the main menu screen. This may take a few minutes, so be patient
- Once the main menu appears, simply hit "OK" on your HD-DVD add-on remote
- Sit back and enjoy a wonderful concert

Two ridiculously talented women with a brilliant supporting cast, Ann and Nancy put on one heck of a show. Two songs really moved me - "Alone" and "Battle of Evermore". Ann's vocals are as powerful now as they were 20 years ago as evidenced on "Alone". Their cover of Zeppelin's "Evermore" was a fitting tribute to the rock legends. Nancy's guitar skills are as sharp as ever. I had a hard time taking my eyes away from her fingers when they showed her playing on-screen, but I'm a little biased.

The sisters have a bond and a chemistry that's easy to see and hear. It would have been a fun show to see live...too bad I missed it! This HD-DVD truly is the next-best thing, though. Once you get it working, of course.

4 out of 5 stars Great gift for any incubus fan........2007-05-12

I purchased Incubus-Alive at Red Rocks from Amazon for my wife as an Easter present. She really enjoyed it. Since it is on Blu-ray disk the sound and video quality are excellent, even on my four year old HD setup. I think this is a great purchase for any Incubus fan.

-On a side note, the order came a day or two after the estimated date. I'm guessing it was due to alot of orders placed at the time, since it was Easter. However, this is the first time this has happened and normally Amazon gets my orders to me on or befor the time I expect them =D

5 out of 5 stars HighDefDiscNews.com's Review.......2007-04-27

The Uncompressed Linear PCM 5.1 track on the Blu-ray Disc release of Incubus "Alive at Red Rocks" features a 6.9Mbps audio track. This is by far the best sound quality yet on a High-Def disc. Uncompressed Linear PCM sound is amazing to experience if you have a newer A/V Reciever with real HDMI inputs (not passthrough) to actually get to hear it. The visuals are not too shabby either, with the concert being shot on 15 High-Def cameras and presented in glorious Full 1080p with amazing cinematography too if I say so myself. This Blu-ray Disc is a BD-50 (50gb Dual-Layer) and it really seems to be using all of the space available. This version, just like the Standard-Def DVD version comes with a 5 track bonus CD. Well the 5 tracks from that bonus CD are also on the Blu-ray Disc itself in the Bonus Materials and you can browse or play through a slideshow of High-Def digital camera pictures the band members took themselves as you listen to those songs (which if you look at the end of the concert and bonus materials you see some of the band members taking those pictures).

Straight from the set-'em-up and knock-'em-down school of teen-horror filmmaking, Stay Alive gives literal meaning to the parental lament, "Those games will kill you someday." Not that you'll find any parents in this gimmicky thriller set in New Orleans; they're conspicuously absent when Hutch (Jon Foster) and his hardcore gamer pals discover "Stay Alive," a mysterious next-generation computer game that has a nasty way of precipitating mayhem, horror, and death. If your character dies in the game, you're doomed to die in identically grisly fashion in real life. So, just don't play the game, right? WRONG. This being a teen horror flick with a screenplay that makes no sense whatsoever, the gamer pals (including victim #2, Hutch's boss, played with game-addicted fervor by Adam Goldberg) obsessively investigate the game and its creepy Ring-like origins in the 17th century murder spree of a woman known as "The Blood Countess." Because movies like this are best viewed on a steady diet of Pop Tarts and Ritalin, Jimmi Simpson earns top honors as the gamer pal with the creepiest behavior, and Malcolm in the Middle fans will enjoy the presence of Frankie Muniz as a gamer geek whose primary fashion statement consists of grimy T-shirts and green plastic poker-visors. While not nearly as fun or clever as the Final Destination movies, Stay Alive delivers a few good deaths while blatantly stealing most of its horror highlights from Ju-On and other Japanese horror hits. It's junk from start to finish, but its target audience of mallrats and gamers (especially those with attention deficit disorder, which helps to ignore the plot holes) won't mind a bit.--Jeff Shannon

Description

The blood runs deep in this extended director's cut of STAY ALIVE, the mind-bending thriller about a killer video game. The real world and the game world gruesomely collide when a group of friends play STAY ALIVE, a mysterious underground videogame that kills the gamer whose character dies in play. In a death-defying race against time, the survivors must solve the mystery of the game while desperately trying to stay alive. More spine-chilling gore and action, plus all-new never-before-seen material -- including a new character and subplot -- push this version way over the edge of what could be seen in theaters.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars This was a good horror flick.......2007-06-30

I liked this horror flick because it was a different kind of story. It was a story of some people getting together and playing the same game of a "ghost that was called back from the dead" only to realize that the ghost was looking for revenge to anyone that encounters it within the game. If you would "die" in the game, you would die in real life of the same circumstances. It was a good horror flick and did keep me interested through out the movie. I do highly recommend this movie to anyone that is a horror fan and likes a "different" story.

1 out of 5 stars Why Not Just Destroy the Game.......2007-06-24

Stay Alive has an interesting premise and a good looking cast. The problem is that the execution (no real pun intended) is horrible. This was the last film made in New Orleans pre Katrina so I had some interest in seeing it. I must say that the City is quite possibly the best character in the film.

Hutch (Jon Foster) is an avid videogamer who inherits a prototype game from a recently deceased friend. After playing the game with a group of friends they begin to die in the way they were killed in the game. On a mission to find out how to stop the deaths the legend of the Blood Countess is revealed by an author who sounds amazingly like Elmer Fudd. What follows is standard slasher fare with the obigatory jerky girls of Asian horror thrown in for good measure.

The film looks terribly dark through most of the film and the sound design is not the best that I've heard on a new film. Add to this a weak storyline and too perfect characters and you get a film that it is better to stay away from.

Not recommended.

3 out of 5 stars An OK horror flick........2007-06-09

Major points to the creators of this film for creating a horror movie that is different from the rest of the movies in its' genre (in terms of the video game aspect). That being said, this movie could be much better as it pulls ideas from many other horror movies.

So what's to like about this movie? As I said above, it's different. A group of kids must stay alive by playing a video game that controls how they die. As far as keeping my interest, it did a fair job of doing so.

What's not to like? I would have liked for the creators to have more of the actual video game in the movie. If these kids are literally trying to stay alive by playing a video game, you would think that they would show more of the actual video game to let the audience see what is going on. Also, the characters are nothing to be excited about. In general, "scary" movies" contain likeable characters so that you feel some sort of emotion when something bad happens to them. This creates a more intense movie. Unfortunately, Stay Alive's characters are incredibly unlikeable. Furthermore, if you've seen any scary movie, you'll know what's going to happen in this movie. It's very predictable.

My verdict? 3/5 stars. It's an ok movie. Nothing special. The flaws I mentioned above ruined what could have possibly been a great movie. If you really want to see this movie, I suggest renting it rather than buying it.

4 out of 5 stars Some will watch it more than once.......2007-05-28

I don't know why all the negative reviews for this movie. I watched it a number of times and had fun with it. I enjoyed the characters and the way they were depicted. Rip Off of other films? Hey, in today's (especially horror)movies, what isn't? The idea is to make the next one better than the others or just as darn good. I thought Stay Alive did that.

I give it four stars for it's entertainment value, but that's just me.

3 out of 5 stars Not your average horror flick........2007-05-01

I'm sure most people interested in this movie have seen the trailer at the least, which tells you most of the story right there. Dude gets a killer video game, literally, and wants to share with friends. It's interesting, the graphics decent, the acting not bad. Through most of it, I'm thinking to myself, 'It's Doogie Howser turned techno geek'. As my daughter and I watched it, I kept waiting for Sophia Bush to get 'bumped off'. While some pople think it's cliche, I thought it was a bit more innovative than that. The whole set up, of it being a killer video game, while reaching into fantasy, was actually done quite well. There isn't an overabundance of 'hack and slash' like the Jason or Freddy movies, it is somewhat unique. It's not a movie for everyone, but it is worth seeing at least once if you are into special effects and graphics. It isn't nearly as cheesy as most of the garbage that's been getting onto the sci-fi channel. I don't know if I can take another really horrible sci-fi thriller starring Casper Van Dien...Someone save us from that crappolla!!
