This is a terrible movie. Frank Marshall (Arachnophobia) demonstrates no control over story, actors, effects, or general presentation in this adaptation of a Michael Crichton novel about an expedition into deep, dark Africa that runs into an unknown race of killer apes. The big monkeys attack and attack and attack and have to be fought off with machine guns and lasers--that's pretty much the story, except there's probably an even better one behind "fourth Ghostbuster" Ernie Hudson's bizarre decision to speak with a British accent. While Marshall wants us to root for the human characters, they're all so obnoxious and unbelievable you can't help but feel lousy for the poor apes when they get chopped to bits just for defending their homes against these twerps. If you're not feeling enough environmentalist ire these days, watch this and get angry. --Tom Keogh

2 out of 5 stars Not enough Monkey Business!.......2007-02-10

Everybody say CONGO is a film about scientists find killer gorillas in th rain forest. This is true, but before we get to the psycho monkeys, we have to sit trough hostile militants, the Hungry Hungry Hippos in their cruel retirement, and guys who just get this occasional urge to shoot planes out of the sky with seeker rockets that thwarted with flare guns. The killer gorillas show up in the first five minutes to kill Bruce Campbell (dang you monkeys!) and disappear until the last twenty minutes or so. And this film is 110 minutes.

Well, I guess I can't get too angry at CONGO, it at least has decent effect and a few cool action sequences. Those are really the only two good things I can say about this borefest. Stay away unless your a Michael Chritchon completest.

4 out of 5 stars STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!!!.......2007-01-12

With a classic line like that, you cant go wrong.

5 out of 5 stars The most underrated comedy of the 90's.......2006-12-11

People may make the mistake when viewing Congo in thinking that they are seeing a suspenseful action flick. On the contrary, it is in fact an unintentional jungle adventure spoof comedy. Ernie Hudson is hilarious and delivers great lines such as "I'm your great white hunter, though I happen to be black." Tim Curry is hilarious as always. The scene where Hudson, Linney and Curry are bribing the warlord is one of the best comedy scenes of the 90's (Seriously, who doesn't find "STOP EATING MY SESAME CAKE!" funny?) This movie was misrepresented as a thriller but in reality it is Crichton's successful stab at comedy. I give this funny piece of crap 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The myth of the killer ape.......2006-11-17

I really liked this movie and thought it was a great adventure film. In a way it is kind of like the movie Anaconda only with killer gorillas instead of snakes.

Description

CONGO: WHITE KING, RED RUBBER, BLACK DEATH describes how King Leopold II of Belgium turned Congo into its private colony between 1885 and 1908. Under his control, Congo became a gulag labor camp of shocking brutality. Leopold posed as the protector of Africans fleeing Arab slave-traders but, in reality, he carved out an empire based on terror to harvest rubber. Families were held as hostages, starving to death if the men failed to produce enough wild rubber. Children's hands were chopped off as punishment for late deliveries. The Belgian government has denounced this documentary as a "tendentious diatribe" for depicting King Leopold II as the moral forebear of Adolf Hitler, responsible for the death of 10 million people in his rapacious exploitation of the Congo. Yet, it is agreed today that the first Human Rights movement was spurred by what happened in the Congo. .

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Subject, Pedestrian Documentary.......2007-05-28

I would have hoped for a more emotionally moving and interesting documentary but appreciate a documentary was made. I want to learn more about the Congo, Belgium and King Leopold II and think I might find some more interesting materials. This film was a good start. It is just too much like a British version of Dateline NBC or 20/20. The style the documentary was created in is similar to Kurt and Cortney if you have seen that movie.

4 out of 5 stars One word...Excellent!.......2007-01-09

Awesome documentary. Goes hand in hand with the book King Leopold's Ghost by Adam Hochschild.

5 out of 5 stars a "visual book".......2006-09-07

I am acquainted with what happened in the Congo (the book "King Leopold's Ghost" comes to mind).

This video, in docudrama form, also tells the story. Because it is a video, there are not footnotes for us to check up on, but, the reality was there.

Look for the details with footnotes in the books (of which there are many), but see this video which pictures the reality.

2 out of 5 stars A so good reportage with many avoidable mistakes.......2006-04-04

This movie is excellent even if not a surprise after reading "the ghost" book

Sadly, many production details are jeoparding it:
1. Mistakes in subtitles: 150 in French is subtitle 500, 16hours (4pm) subtitle 6pm.
2. The persons interviewed are unknown: we do not know their name, job, functions
3. The letters are sometimes read, sometimes declamed but we never know if it is fiction or reality: the reference of the letter (who, to who, when) in subtitle

Without all this, I would have rated the movie 4 stars but opening a book about history without giving your sources is unprofessional.

5 out of 5 stars Well researched, excellenty told story of an ongoing tragedy.......2006-03-06

A superbly told and excellently researched documentary on the genocide perpetrated against the Congolese people by King Leopold II of Belgium, and covered up and perpetuated by the Belgian State.

This moving documentary tells in a microcosm the story of modern Africa - which can only be truly understood by looking at each country - and exposes the roots of its current pains.

If the United States thrives because it was built on the principles of life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness; it can be no accident that a country founded on the undescribable principles instituted by King Leopald II and perpetuated by the Belgian State, remains steeped in violence, poverty and human deprivity.

3 out of 5 stars It's about the music not the pictures........2006-04-09

Nick doesn't even like making videos. Rent don't buy this one. It's much more worth your while to buy a live performance DVD.

4 out of 5 stars bad seeds don't fall far from the tree.......2005-08-02

Videos are, demonstrably, not a strong point for the Bad Seeds. Neither are they a point of interest for the band. If you are interested in inspired and objectively interesting videos, look elsewhere. However, if you like to watch Nick Cave dance around while Blixa Bargeld looks very pretty in the background, you've found your match. The commentary between the videos is entertaining and offers a glimpse into the minds of the otherwise taciturn Bad Seeds. This is a collection for the collectors, or the über-fans.

4 out of 5 stars Ditto the Mixed Bag.......2005-04-02

If you have not seen this DVD, it must be restated that Cave and his bandmates admit from the very start that they do not like doing videos. So, if you presumably already have these songs on CD and many of the reviews lean toward the negative, why own this? Well, in my view, The Videos is a great collection precisely because it is so primitive and often silly. I don't like all the songs and would rather that others had taken the place of those I don't like, hence the four stars. But overall, this is a video that any Nick Cave fan should be eager to own because actually watching Cave perform adds so much more to the songs.
The following are my favorites:
1) Staggerlee---Cave in his most menacing stance. The dancing is so silly you may roll on the floor laughing.
2) Where the Wild Roses Grow---Manichean juxtapositions. Cave and Minogue play their roles to the hilt. And then there's that snake...
3) Into My Arms---The imagery is what gets you. Very stark.
4) Henry Lee---The video does not really fit the words, but you can feel the sexual tension generated by PJ Harvey and Cave.
5) Red Right Hand---Always a great song, sinister as Cave can make it.
6) Do You Love Me---Actually, I couldn't care less about the bozos he filmed in a Brazilian dive, but the performance is urgent and bursting with Cave's energy.
7) Jack the Ripper---Full of blood, brings the lyrics to hideous life.
8) Mercy Seat---Somewhat weak, but Cave looks the part of a loser who is about to be fried. Could have been a lot more graphic, but still a great song.
9) The Weeping Song--The set it comical (with the phony water and rocking boat, the guys swilling Retsina), the dancing stupid, and Blixa Bargeld with a voice tailor-made for a song like this.
10) I Had A Dream, Joe---Shows the band at its most manic. No acting per se, but lots of great shots of individual band members frantically playing and Cave working himself into an exhausting frenzy.

What didn't I like? They could have jettisoned What A Wonderful World and In the Ghetto for sure. They stink out loud, particularly that last, the aural stench of which still lingers in my ears.
Addressing one reviewer's complaint, one can skip the commentary before each song by selecting the songs one by one rather than playing the whole thing through. A bit of a pain, but its an option.
So, overall I ditto the mixed bag judgement of several reviewers but reiterate my recommendation of The Videos for anyone who is truly a Nick Cave fan. I plan to enjoy this DVD frequently and you may find that you will too as long as you remember the proviso that these videos are not the acme of the art.

1 out of 5 stars The bad seeds!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2005-03-31

The bad seeds certainly! I liked Where The Wild Roses Grow, because the video is excellent. Nick Cave and Kylie Minogue are great in this one, but I figure that's just because I like Kylie and nothing else but Nick is good in this one! The only Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds video I like.

2 out of 5 stars Pretty crappy for such a great artist........2004-11-25

I really enjoy Nick Cave's music and I have almost all of his CDs. He has a deep and poetic lyrical style that is rare in popular music today. So when I saw his DVD of music videos, I was intrigued. Man was I let down. Maybe two or three of the videos are tolerable, most are bad and a few are outright terrible. I am pretty forgiving to low budget productions in most cases. Usually I can get passed the cheap sets and poor camera work on videos, if they are creative. But something about these videos' cheap production was just plain bad. If you like Nick Cave, stick to his audio collection and just pretend you never saw this DVD.

5 out of 5 stars THE KISS IS SEXY AND SCARY 80's MOVIE!!!!!!!!.......2005-06-24

The Kiss is a sexy and scary 80's horror movie that was awesome back then and awesome now!!!!!! It has a wonderful cast and the story was basic which i like!!!!!! Its about this aunt that lives with her niece in New York only to give her this curse which you have to kiss the person to take the curse!!!! What more can i say about this movie is that it had style and even though its a little cheesy i would watch it again and again!!!!!

1 out of 5 stars another bad movie.......2005-04-04

This is another fine example of a cheesy 80's movie. It make you wonder why anyone would even bother to make a movie if they don't want to put the time and effort into making a half way decent film. What is truly sad is the story could have been good, but the people making the movie seemed to just want to hurry up and make a movie just for the sake of making one. And had no one of 1988 heard of eyebrow waxing? The mass of unsightly hair on almost every actor and actress was by FAR the scariest thing in this film.

    3 out of 5 stars good thriller.........2002-09-03

When I first saw it , it was scary, I liked the scene where the daughter get's brave and takes on the scary aunt..this movie is hard to find..Can't find it in the video stores.

3 out of 5 stars Seemed a bit boring on tv.......2000-05-17

I've only seen the MONSTERVISION version on tv. I want the R version so I can see the scene where the blonde girl gets ripped up in the escolater.

    5 out of 5 stars Better than 100 books.......2005-02-04

This DVD might be the best tutorial for those interested in learning African accoustic (read: fingerpicking) guitar styles. Students of ethnomusicology/cultural anthropology will also find it useful. Sometimes the sound quality leaves much to be desired, but remember that these were field recordings from 12 to 40 years ago. Some truly legendary figures are filmed here, including Jean Bosco Mwenda, father of Congolose guitar. However, in my opinion, Malawi's Daniel Kachamba who steals the show, particularly his last song which ends in a full band treatment.

There's more than just fingerpicking here. The plectrum attack of Namibia's Erasmus Ndara's second song is seriously funky, while Zambian Mose Yotamu uses a flatpick for an electric guitar style solo and strums barre chords accoustic rock style. These's also some dreamy slide guitar from Moya Malamusi. Africa being the poor continent that it is , we see the resourcefulness of these guitarists in several aspects; (i) playing with 5 strings due to missing strings and/or tuning posts (ii) using a stick as a pick (iii) sticks and rubber bands as capos (iv) a bottle as a slides. None of this takes anything away from the top-notch musicianship of these guys.

        Product Description

The true story of the rise to power and brutal assassination of the formerly vilified and later redeemed leader of the independent Congo, Patrice Lumumba. Using newly discovered historical evidence, Haitian-born and later Congo-raised writer and director Raoul Peck renders an emotional and tautly woven account of the mail clerk and beer salesman with a flair for oratory and an uncompromising belief in the capacity of his homeland to build a prosperous nation independent of its former Belgium overlords. Lumumba emerges here as the heroic sacrificial lamb dubiously portrayed by the international media and led to slaughter by commercial and political interests in Belgium, the United States, the international community, and Lumumba's own administration; a true story of political intrigue and murder where political entities, captains of commerce, and the military dovetail in their quest for economic and political hegemony.

        2 out of 5 stars NOT THE 180-MINUTE VERSION!!!.......2007-06-24

Despite what it says in the Amazon.com advertisement, this DVD is NOT the full 180-minute version of "Lumumba." In fact, at 109 minutes, this version is actually six minutes shorter than the "Special Edition," (also Region 1), that is listed at 115 minutes. The sleeve for this version also claims to have an English-language soundtrack, but it does not. It does have English-language subtitles to go with the French soundtrack, however. The sleeve for this version claims that it its aspect ration is 1:2.35, but that does not appear to be true, either--the aspect ratio appears to be 1:1.85, the same as the Special Edition. Because the Special Edition contains many extras--including excepts from R. Peck's excellent documentary "Lumumba: Death of a Prophet," it is clearly the better choice for anyone who wants to purchase a DVD of this film right now. Ideally, however, we should press for a release of the full 3-hour version of this film, preferably packaged together with the FULL documentary "Lumumba: Death of a Prophet." Now THAT would be a package worth paying extra for! The 2 stars above reflect the several misrepresentations associated with this particular DVD release, not the film itself, which is very good, albeit in this version in an unnecessarily truncated form.

          Description

A team of scientists clambers down into the steep crater of an active volcano in central Africa, a lake of molten lava seething far below. The team's mission is to explore this deadly mountain up close to find out when and why it is likely to erupt next. The lives of half a million people living directly in its shadow are at stake.

In January 2002, the ground close to the city of Goma in the Democratic Republic of Congo split open and rivers of lava swept through entire neighborhoods, killing some 100 people and leaving 120,000 homeless. The volcano towering over the city, Mount Nyirangongo, had awoken again. Now French volcanologist Jacques Durieux and his team worry that, next time, deadly lava could erupt from cracks directly under the city itself.

Volcano Under the City reaches a stunning climax as Durieux's team struggles to capture a sample of furiously boiling lava from the heart of the volcano. The crater walls crumble and Mount Nyirangongo belches poisonous gas as the scientists put their lives on the line to retrieve their vital data. .
