Based on Anthony Swofford's excellent memoir about his experiences as a Marine Sniper in Gulf War I, Jarhead is a war movie in which the waiting is a far greater factor upon the characters than the war itself, and the build up to combat is more drama than what combat is depicted. To some viewers hoping for typical movie action, this will seem like a cruel joke. But it's not. It's just the story as it was written, and if you liked the book, you will probably like the movie. If you didn't, then the movie won't change your mind.

The movie follows the trajectory of Swofford (played with thoughtful intensity by Jake Gyllenhaal) from wayward Marine recruit (he joined because he "got lost on the way to college") to skilled Marine sniper, and on into the desert in preparation for the attack on Iraq. No-nonsense, Marine-for-life Staff Sgt. Sykes (Jamie Foxx), the man who recruited Swofford and his spotter Troy (Peter Sarsgaard) into the sniper team, leads them in training, and in waiting where their lives are dominated by endless tension, pointless exercises in absurdity (like playing football in the scorching heat of the desert in their gas masks so it will look better for the media's TV cameras), more training, and constant anticipation of the moment to come when they'll finally get to kill. When the war does come, it moves too fast for Swofford's sniper team, and the one chance they get at a kill--to do the one thing they've trained so hard and waited so long for--eludes them, leaving them to wonder what was the point of all they had endured.

As directed by Sam Mendes (American Beauty), the movie remains very loyal to the language and vision of the book, but it doesn't entirely work as the film needs something more than a literal translation to bring out its full potential. Mendes's stark and, at times, apocalyptic visuals add a lot and strike the right tone: wide shots of inky-black oil raining down on the vast, empty desert from flaming oil wells contrasted with close-ups of crude-soaked faces struggling through the mire vividly bring to life the meaning of the tagline "welcome to the suck." But much of the second half of the movie will probably leave some viewers feeling disappointed in the cinematic experience, while others might appreciate its microcosmic depiction of modern chaos and aimlessness. Jarhead is one of those examples where the book is better than the movie, but not for lack of trying. --Dan Vancini

Description

Academy Award winner Jamie Foxx and Jake Gyllenhaal star in this critically acclaimed, brilliantly unconventional war story from Oscar-winning director Sam Mendes.

Jarhead (the self-imposed moniker of the Marines) follows Swoff (Gyllenhaal) from a sobering stint in boot camp to active duty, where he sports a sniper rifle through Middle East deserts that provide no cover from the heat or Iraqi soldiers. Swoff and his fellow Marines sustain themselves with sardonic humanity and wicked comedy on blazing desert fields in a country they don't understand against an enemy they can't see for a cause they don't fully grasp.

3 out of 5 stars War is a bore.......2007-06-21

Anthony "Swoff" Swofford served in Gulf War One, and then came home to write about it. His gripping book, "Jarhead: A Marine's Chronicle of the Gulf War and Other Battles," was quickly optioned to be a movie. Where the book captures the fleeting explosions of adrenaline that briefly hits you between countless days of tedium, the film version really loads up the tedium.

Really, this uninspiring true-life take on being a soldier may be the most honest take on war ever filmed. There are no heroics. No moments of raging brilliance to stop an enemy. Just hot sweaty men in a desert, scared as hell and maybe bored beyond it. What that translates to is tedious viewing. War is the long stretches of nothing between battles, and these long stretches from the majority of "Jarhead." If you're looking for "Saving Private Ryan," "Platoon" or even "The Boys of Company C," you're not getting any of that here. "Swoff" spends his entire stay in Desert Shield to Desert Storm wondering when he will finally get the chance to use his elite sniper training to make his first kill. The kill that never comes.

"Jarhead" comes closest to mimicking the superior "Full Metal Jacket," in that the drollness of Swofford matches Private Joker in Kubrick's film. But "Jarhead" has no payoff. Theirs is a place where no point of view ever happens...what politics there are in the movie will come strictly from your own point of view. But the film itself is visually stunning, I doubt if the scene where oil rains down on Swoff's unit in the night, the desert lit only from flaming oil wells will easily be forgotten, or the horrific "highways of death" recreation. (Google that reference for the background.) Jake Gyllenhaal gives an eerie performance, the emotions bubbling under his facade. (Almost as good as his turn in "Brokeback Mountain.")

But again, I return to the movie's pace and subject matter. It really is too slow and random to be truly entertaining, and yet its lack of any real point of view makes it hard to really dig into the charachters here. Just like Swofford, you spend the duration of "Jarhead" waiting for the time when you finally see some action. The "I am always going to be a Jarhead" ending makes you wish for a deeper explanation as to why.

3 out of 5 stars Great scenes, so-so movie........2007-06-04

What can you say about a movie that has so many fine ingredients? This is all the hallmarks of a great movie - great director, terrific acting, epic cinematography, relevant message. And yet without a real narrative to hang on, this is a movie about the atmosphere - in particular, the cumulative effect of atmosphere. It will depend on the viewer if that atmosphere is enough to sustain interest.
Jake Gyllenhaal is terrifically convincing as the naïve young `average young man' who joins up instead of going to college. His journey is the lynchpin of the movie, and he makes it work. He starts off in the usual drill sergeant shouting at recruits type scenes, and finally gets to the Gulf. There, the movie is about the waiting. The boredom and frustration of being built up to act, and then sit on their heels unable to act.. Problem is, in convincingly conveying the boredom and frustration of the men, the viewer is equally bored and frustrated. The war starts, and yet the frustration is never truly released for the group of marines, and in the final scenes the end is somewhat bleak to say the least. The cream of the most macho soldiers are made to look impotent.
This is a timely look at what some of the pressures must have been like - there are probably also parallels to be made with today's conflict, even though the situation is quite different. As the lead says towards the end - Every war is different - and every war is the same.
So is this enough to spend your two hours on the couch..? The answer is probably only just - there was more that could have been made of these memoirs. But accepting its flaws, its probably still interesting enough to get through - just not if you are an action junkie!

1 out of 5 stars A $1 rental.......2007-05-22

I wish I had watched it before I bought it. In that it is fairly realistic so I'm told by guys who were there it dull and boring and mostly pointless. If you are looking for action go some where else.

1 out of 5 stars No reason for this movie.......2007-05-16

While not a Marine veteran, I am a Gulf War veteran. And I found very little redeeming about this movie. There are only two elements of this film that were worth bringing to an international audience.

1) The "Dear John" letter board. For whatever reason, especially confusing given the shortness of this war, there seemed to be a disproportionate number of breakups and divorces among Desert Storm participants. Perhaps it just seemed that way from the inside, or because suddenly women were everywhere in a combat-zone for the first-time making it easier for soldiers to cheat (not a knock against female soldiers) or because without a draft there were so many eligible young men still left back in the states to cause trouble there. Whatever the reason, even this important statement in Jarhead was as poorly underdone as a Herfy goat burger (inside joke).

2) The other important element shown in this film was the frustration of waiting. Sitting in the desert and keyed up for 5 months with no proper outlet or release. Again, they missed their cue there. I do not believe for a second that a Marine NCO would allow his recon unit on the edge of a battlefield to behave in such an undisciplined and coarse manner. Especially in front of civilians and worse, reporters. This stinks a little bit to much of the early stages of Heartbreak Ridge before the Gunny shows up.

The main character/author is nothing short of a crybaby wimp. His is not a personality that can be suppressed throughout Boot Camp, AIT, and TIS. He should have never been in a warzone because he should never have been allowed to be a Marine. The closest this guy should have gotten to the military is by working for the Air Force MWR (another inside joke).

I see this movie as an insult to the Corps and the military at large. Its timing was very suspect. Its time of filming and release was during the early stages of Operation Iraqi Freedom, a war that is depicted by liberal Hollywood and the media as being very unpopular. Touted and sold as a patriotic celebration of our military, its really just another example of how the left "supports our troops" but cutting their feet out from under them.

1 out of 5 stars exceptionally bad.......2007-05-09

Bolstered by the success of 28 Days Later, Shaun of the Dead, the Resident Evil movies and the hit remake of his own Dawn of the Dead, George A. Romero returns to the horror subgenre he invented with Land of the Dead. The fourth installment in Romero's zombie cycle (and the first since 1985's Day of the Dead) presents a logical progression of events since 1968's horror classic Night of the Living Dead: Zombies (also known as "stenches" for their rotting odor) are the dominant population, and they've begun to show signs of undead intelligence and gathering power. The wealthiest survivors live comfortably in a luxury high-rise within a barricaded safe zone, ignoring the horrors of the outside world while armed scavengers stage raids in the zombie-zone to gather much-needed food and supplies. Simon Baker and John Leguizamo play mercenaries-for-hire; Dennis Hopper is their nefarious boss; and horror favorite Asia Argento (daughter of Suspiria director Dario Argento) plays a former hooker recruited into Baker's scavenger squad. While none of this seems particularly fresh or inspired, Land of the Dead benefits from hints of the social satire that made Romero's earlier zombie films so memorable. Not so much funny as gruesomely peculiar, Romero's plot isn't as inventive as it could've been, but as a big-scale B-movie, Land of the Dead delivers a handful of shocks and horror-celebrity cameos (including gore-masters Tom Savini and Greg Nicotero) that should keep horror buffs happy until the next zombie opus comes along. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars fun on a bun in the sun with a gun.......2007-05-30

I'll preface this by saying that I just paid a rather embarrassing amount for an enormous Land of the Dead poster (we're talking six feet high, here). That's just one example. I guess you could say I like this film just a little bit.

First, the bad: many people will NOT like the ending. A character makes a decision that has caused no end of controversy. I also winced a little, as I surely would not have done the same thing, but it is something decidedly different from other films of its ilk. Other characters make decisions that, again, many of us would not have made, given the circumstances. Some will dislike zombies with weapons and the concept of "thinking" zombies to begin with. This seems to tie in with "Day", which is also much reviled in some circles for a lot of the same reasons. I completely understand the reasoning behind it all, which is why I'm listing these aspects as flaws.

That aside... the special effects are fantastic, the atmosphere is perfect and the characters and dialogue are fun. I love Charlie so much I could just die, twice. If you've seen "Land" and it's your only exposure to Robert Joy, you owe it to yourself to seek out more of the films he appears in. He is a highly underrated talent.

In some ways, it may not be the strongest of the "Dead" films, but there's no denying that it's fun to watch. Plenty of gore, cool-looking zombies, and cinematography that sails right past "good" and plops squarely upon "so sexy I could eat it".

Also, and it has little to do with the film as a whole, but Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright are just delightful as the zombies chained to the swingset in the photo booth. I want to pinch their rotten cheeks.

I can't get much gushier than that. I love "Land" so much that it's shameful, and for the most part I try to keep it to myself, since so many people seem to despise it with a passion that far outstrips my own. I know not everyone will agree, but hey, maybe the filmmakers would be glad to know how happy they've made at least one person. Which is a lot. Huge amounts of happy. It's just good slasher zombie fun with heart and guts (and entrails. which gives it extra guts, just for good measure.)

Three cheers for Romero! I've still not entirely lost faith. Here's hoping that "Diary" will be as much of a joyride.

5 out of 5 stars Romero evolves!.......2007-05-17

Many people, Romero fans and average zombie fans alike, have come out against this movie. "It's dumb" "That's not what would happen?" "It doesn't make sense?"

From one perspective, the opinions are justified. From another side, its blasphemous to speak out against the father of the modern zombie movie.

"Land of the Dead" provides a unique evolution of the zombie movie from the founding father himself. The story is massively gory, with zombie feasts spread throughout. One is reminiscent of the project apartment scene from the original "Dawn...", but jacked up about 10 notches from its '70's counterpart.

In regards to the zombies "thinking/feeling", many have forgotten that Romero has touched on the exact same subject in the original "Day..." with the unforgetable "Bub". This only takes that theme and builds on it to a shockingly beautiful crescendo. Eugene Clark is brilliant in his portrayal of the "Gas Station Zombie", Dennis Hopper is fantastic as the fat cat capitalist ignoring the problem, John Leguizamo provides a sympathetic protagonist against Asia Argento and Simon Baker.

There is plenty of gore and zombies getting shot with high-powered weaponry, including "Dead Reckoning", the original name of the movie. There is also plenty of overt commentary on American society. No Romero movie would be complete without it.

There is also an outstanding scene with a mass of zombies that rivals any mass zombie rising in a graveyard.

The movie is excellent, and one must approach it with an open mind.

Trust George.

4 out of 5 stars "I have bad dreams...just look at me, you can tell I have terrible dreams...".......2007-05-12

While George Romero's third film in the "Dead" trilogy, "Day Of The Dead," gained an increasing degree of critical acclaim in the years following its theatrical release, "Land Of The Dead" feels more like the natural finale to the series. It's not a "horror film" in the traditional sense...more like an apocalyptic science fiction piece out of the pages of "Heavy Metal" magazine in its peak years. At the center of the action is rich characterization, with a cast of oddballs and misfits adding up to a satisfying whole: Simon Baker's "Riley Denbo," John Leguizamo's "Cholo," Dennis Hopper's villain "Kauffman," Asia Argento's magnificent anti-heroine "Slack," Robert Joy's "Charlie," the loyal sidekick to Riley, and Pedro Miguel Arce's understated powerhouse "Pillsbury." In terms of special effects, there are some things in "Land of the Dead" you haven't seen before. I won't offer spoilers, but trust me...you'll see new things. There's also a reliance on CGI computer effects...discussed by Romero in the disc's extras...that are hit and miss, but were necessary evils due to the film's budget. I've found that repeated viewings of the film reveal subtle layers and nuances. "Night Of The Living Dead" and "Dawn Of The Dead" were trend-setting, rule-breaking films. "Land Of The Dead" is simply a solid Romero film. For this viewer, that's good enough. Look for cameo appearances by the "Shaun Of The Dead" guys as zombies.

2 out of 5 stars The worst of the bunch.......2007-05-11

I can't believe that this movie was directed by the same man who did the previous "Dead" movies which were so awesome. The first thirty minutes of this were okay but then it just went down from there. Mr. Romero, to save face, please make another attempt at a decent zombie flick. You don't want this last film to be what you're known for!

4 out of 5 stars van damme and lundgren make this worthwhile.......2006-09-03

Universal Soldier is a pretty cool idea that is executed well, by taking dead soldiers of the military and bringing them back to life, specifically, the very muscular guys. This is where Van Damme and Lundgren fill in, and we even get to see the massive Ralph Moeller several times (also played the villain Brakus in Best of the Best 2 and a fighter in Gladiator). For the reborn soldiers, old Vietnam War memories resurface from the beginning of the film, and once again the Van Damme character becomes the good guy and the Lundgren character becomes the villain.

There isn't a huge amount of action in the film, but in between scenes we get to see a lot of Lundgren's bad guy one-liners and attitude. Van Damme doesn't have many fights either until the end, when he goes up against the Lundgren character. The 6 minute fight between the 2 is easily the best part of the movie. They both get to kick some serious you know what on each other. Its a great fight scene.

Universal Soldier's plot and acting may not be great, but its the concept and supersized muscles that make the movie pretty sweet. If you are a fan of Van Damme or Lundgren, this is definetly a must see.

4 out of 5 stars If you like this movie, you'll love the Special Edition DVD!.......2006-02-10

Well, most people who are going to buy the DVD are probably familiar with the movie anyway, so I won't repeat the plot. Watching it again after several years, I really have to say it's one of the better movies of the action genre, especially when you consider that you have people doing the stunts instead of lots of CGI like in today's movies.

As for the entire Special Edition DVD itself -- it has some great extras! Much better than some of the offerings I've seen on other DVDs of movies that were released in the era of VHS and you just didn't get extras, period. A "making of" featurette, interviews with Lundgren & Van Damme, and an alternate ending to the movie -- all fairly substantial material, too --not just tacked on afterthoughts. I was surprised to get so much on this DVD for such a great price!

2 out of 5 stars Universal Soldier.......2006-02-01

My kind of movie, mindless violence. Lots of explosions and action scenes. It seemed a little dated, special effects have come a long way since 1992. Van Damme plays his usual role (macho man), so you know what to expect. Not a great movie, but if you just want to escape for an hour and a half, it will do the job.

Shocking and heartbreaking, The Ground Truth is an Iraq war documentary that is truly essential viewing. A story of the U.S. battle against an often-phantom insurgency, told from the perspective of ordinary Americans who found themselves participating in a daily slaughter of innocent Iraqi civilians, The Ground Truth is the view kept off American televisions since 2003. The bombings, shootings, scenes of mistreatment of civilians, and countless, bloodied bodies of children, women, and unarmed men specifically targeted by U.S. troops, should rattle anyone with eyes to see. But the film's many interviews with veterans, in which they describe an American war machine that chews up young people and abandons them to their physical and psychological wounds, are also stunning in their emotional clarity and intensity. --Tom Keogh

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Very one sided.......2007-06-14

The Ground Truth tells the story of a few veterans who came away from the Iraq War very discontented, mentally disturbed or psychologically damaged in some major way. The stories reflected in the movie are real, but the packaging is designed to bias people into thinking that everything about the war is bad, which is simply not true. Many people are killed, maimed and injured - that is the case in every war (I am one of the veterans in question.) Many bad decisions are made and many lives are ruined when wars are fought, invasions launched and weapons brought to bear. But not every veteran walks away from war as disturbed in the head as the people portrayed here.

The Ground Truth is sobering, realistic and flawed, because it only shows one third of the picture. That is OK, as long as the viewer understands going in that the movie is slanted towards convincing people of how awful and wrong the entire thing is by making showing all the bad and none of the good. We should all know that war does bad things to the people who participate in it, and that sometimes the living suffer more than the dead, or at least longer. We should also know that in wars, human beings commit some of the greatest acts of selflessness that have ever been displayed. Those stories are not told here.

5 out of 5 stars The Ground Truth.......2007-05-11

I came across this show on the Sundance channel and I couldn't stop watching it. I think everyone in the US should watch this video. It was so amazing to hear the stories from troops that have actually been in combat and come home. They ALL have injuries, whether they have lost their limbs, or are mentally scarred due to what they have seen and have had to do. Many of them are in a state of turmoil and angst because of what they have seen and done to protect their country. They are making the biggest sacrifice and we owe it to them to become politically aware and involved. To know what they endure in Iraq would make everyone think twice about this war. To understand what they face when they come home would make everyone think twice about their government. It was truly an eye opener and I am seriously considering sending this to everyone I know (especially the one's who support the war).

4 out of 5 stars It's unfortunate that a movie like this had to be made.......2007-05-10

The information contained in this movie is somewhat familiar to many who have been paying attention to the news over the years. The Walter Reed scandals show a small part of the fact that we are not doing a good job taking care of our injured heroes when they return.

For much of its first half, "The Ground Truth" is a documentary in search of a theme, with director Patricia Foulkrod leveling cursory criticisms against the Iraq war's execution, the armed forces' marketing campaigns and xenophobia-laced basic training procedures, and the media's soft-peddling coverage of non-combatant fatalities, all in the hope that one will stick. Midway through, one does, as Foulkrod focuses her gaze on the neglectful mistreatment of returning GIs - many now severely handicapped and/or suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder - by the military that asked for and accepted their service.

Through interviews with former soldiers struggling to reintegrate into mainstream society because of either physical or psychological traumas, the director paints a portrait of abandonment in which the powers-that-be seem to have deliberately ignored the far-from-inconsequential problems (depression, violent and suicidal tendencies) of their discharged comrades. That Foulkrod's primary thesis is often undercut by semi-related tangents and a standard-issue ugly non-fiction aesthetic leaves The Ground Truth feeling frustratingly uneven and far from cinematically inspired. But as a document of our military's shameful disregard for its own, it's nonetheless a vital reminder of the monumental, lingering toll war takes on its participants, and the moral obligation a country has to care for them once they've come home. They are not just changed or affected, they are different people and most do not know how to deal with that as they do not know themselves.

We have over 3000 dead soldiers in the four years of this invasion; but we have many tens of thousands that will suffer lifelong physical and psychological trauma because of this war. It doesn't matter what side you are on, it behooves you to know the cost of war to decide if we should be in that business. This film illustrates the costs to the men and women entirely.

5 out of 5 stars TRUTH- what we so desperately need!.......2007-04-06

With so many lies being thrown at us by those with rose-colored glasses (& liars), here are the troops themselves telling it as we know it must be. Worth watching & sharing.

5 out of 5 stars The Ground Truth.......2007-03-28

A very powerful message from US soldiers about the reality of military service and the war in Iraq.

Universal Soldier Luc Deveraux is back. Jean-Claude Van Damme gallantly attempts to resurrect interest in his tepid career with this action-riddled roller-coaster ride. Set in the not-too-distant future, Deveraux has been employed by the government to oversee the new UniSol project. What is UniSol? It's a military plan to turn dead soldiers into invincible fighting machines (see the first Univeral Soldier for more details). It's also the scheme that went horribly wrong when the soldiers turned psycho, killing the scientists who created them. Not deterred by this early setback, the government replicates the project. This time they figure that they can control the soldiers through a supercomputer called SETH (kind of like HAL in 2001, but smarter). But, as we all know, machines frequently break down. Pretty soon the computer comes to the conclusion that it's superior to humans and therefore it must destroy them. Uh oh.

Van Damme to the rescue. The muscles from Brussels heroically leap into action confronting the dangerous soldiers led by Bill (WCW) Goldberg and Michael Jai White (last seen in Spawn). The action is impressive and the stunts are engrossing. Goldberg is charismatic as the cartoonish villain who sneers and snouts while muttering macho things like, "I'm gonna kill that guy." Van Damme looks more at home in a production that he is not directing, and for once he lets his fists do the talking. Ironically, the movie is missing the gloss and big-budget pathos of its predecessor (created by Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich), making the original decidedly better. --Jeremy Storey

This movie gives a new definition to the word "BAD." It sucks. The story is stupid and the action is horrendous. Bill Goldberg stinks at acting. His performance is 1% inteligence and 99% braun. He should stay in wrestling. He uses this film to show off his retarded wrestling moves, which by the way suck!! He beats up a male nurse hahaha. I'm surprised he didn't spear some old ladies too. Pathetic. This is one of the worse movies ever made. It makes Flash Gordon and Treasure of the Four Crowns look like Oscar winners hahahaha.

1 out of 5 stars Oh the humanity!.......2005-02-27

There are bad movies, and then there are BAD movies. "Universal Soldier: The Return" is a cosmically bad movie, a movie so poor in every aspect of its execution that one would have to look to "Manos: The Hands of Fate" for comparison. The first "Universal Soldier" film was a moderately entertaining shoot 'em up flick starring action stars Jean-Claude Van Damme and "Rocky" refugee Dolph Lundgren that essentially accomplished what it set out to do: people perished in violent ways, stuff exploded, and Van Damme and Lundgren beat each other into bloody pulps at the end of the film. Even the presence of the charming Ally Walker as Van Damme's female sidekick greatly helped the film. The movie garnered enough attention and fans to merit the release of a special edition DVD some time back. It unfortunately also garnered enough attention and fans to merit this unredeemable piece of trash sequel. The second, and one hopes final, installment in a franchise that should never have become a franchise achieves such heights of utter banality and stupidity that I sat in open-mouthed awe watching it. I think I can safely say I am less of a person for having sat through this atrocity. Expect to spend a few days in a coma after the credits roll.

Van Damme returns as Luc, the reanimated soldier who triumphed over the forces of government sponsored evil in the first film. On this outing he now works for Dr. Dylan Cotner (Xander Berkeley), a scientist who reconstituted the universal soldier program with the help of his supercomputer S.E.T.H. Luc, with his female sidekick Maggie (Kiana Tom), helps design and run training missions for a new batch of super soldiers. The film opens with what the filmmakers hope is a pulse-pounding jaunt up a river, a jaunt filled with explosions, stunts, gunfire, and the briefest glimpse of Tom's incredibly fit form. As the mission grinds to a halt we learn several important things: Kiana Tom is incredibly hot but can't act her way out of a paper bag, Luc has a daughter named Hillary (Karis Paige Bryant) who you just know will get into trouble at some point, and the only soldiers we must pay attention to are Romeo (Bill Goldberg) and the one played by Michael Jai White. Frankly, turning off the film immediately after glimpsing Tom's amazing physique is probably a good thing. Everything that follows is dull, predictable, and so full of plot holes as to defy description. "Universal Soldier: The Return" feels like eighty minutes of dental surgery rather than an action film.

Sure enough, Cotner's computer goes on the fritz and unleashes the killing power of the universal soldiers. In the resulting conflagration S.E.T.H. implants its consciousness in Michael Jai White, Luc and his loved ones flee from the compound, and the military swoops in to contain the problem. An extraordinarily untalented actress named Heidi Schanz also pops in as nosy reporter called Erin who is interested in exposing the government's latest shenanigans. Predictably, Van Damme and Schanz team up to track down...er...well, track down something to defeat the supercomputer. I think they need some code to shut the system down, but in the meantime the film takes them all over the place so that a wisecracking Romeo can follow them around while absorbing all the abuse Luc can hand out. Even throwing in a few scenes set in an adult's only club can't make this turkey fly. It's dull, folks, and painfully so. By the time the film grinds to its inevitable showdown between Luc and S.E.T.H. back at the shattered compound--with an injured Hillary's life balancing precariously in the background to serve as motivation for an overwhelmed Luc (Geez, what a surprise there!)--I knew I just wasted far too much of my life with this car wreck. How bad can it be, you ask? Read on...

Plot holes in this film are innumerable, as uncountable as grains of sand on the beach or acne on a teenager's face. For example, Luc explains to Erin that he was once a universal soldier just like Romeo but Cotner "cured" him by restoring him to life; he no longer needs injections or ice or any of the other devices used by the soldiers. What the heck are we doing marveling at this amazing supercomputer when Cotner just performed a miracle of biblical implications? He brought someone back from the dead! How exactly did he accomplish this feat? We don't find out from Van Damme, who simply smirks his way through a few lines of dialogue that simply boggle the mind with their monumentally idiotic implications. I could go on, but let's discuss the performances instead--or the lack thereof. I should say I adore Kiana Tom; she's a drop dead gorgeous babe with a body that could stop the earth's rotation, but watching her stumble through dialogue is like having your appendix taken out through your mouth. Another problem is the lumbering Bill Goldberg, whose "funny" lines are anything but. And the more I think about Heidi Schanz, the less I think of her. You have to wonder about a film where Jean-Claude Van Damme is the best thespian in the cast.

You might think a movie this foolhardy shouldn't contain any bonus features on DVD. You would be wrong. Trailers for this film, "The Return," "Double Team," "Desert Heat," "Knock Off," "Maximum Risk," and "Nowhere to Run" showcase the dubious career of Jean-Claude Van Damme. A making of feature, a Van Damme career retrospective (Ha!), a Michael Jai White feature, and talent bios round out the disc. My advice to those viewers thinking of renting "Universal Soldier: The Return"? Run, my friends, run far, far away and don't look back.

5 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable zombie flick.......2007-06-30

As zombie flicks go this one was, in my personal opinion, very thought out and executed. Okay, so you can't really grab someone by the hair and rip their head off along with their spinal chord, but that's what the fiction genre is all about.

If there's going to be a sequel somewhere down the road, I hope it's not by some fly by night 'B' company who just slaps any old thing together.

5 stars for great affects, acting, and all around entertainment.

Land of the Dead is the spiritual successor of Romero's previous Zombie films, ending with Day of the Dead too many years ago.

When I learned they would be using computer generated imagery for some of the special effects, I sort of cringed. Computer created blood and gore effects I've seen in other releases have left me with a bad taste in my mouth. I can happily report that with a few exceptions the CG created imagery works really well. The only scene I can think of as being slightly disappointing is the scene involving the zombie in the liquor store. I don't want to spoil the surprise for anyone, but I'll leave it at there is a scene that involves some bloody spray that just looked unnatural to me. All of the other effects, such as zombie heads being removed from their bodies and so on looked about as realistic as normal effects. In fact I'd say the scenes that involved disembodied parts worked better this way given that the body parts were real; helped by the creative use of blue/green screen effects.

As with Romero's previous zombie works, this movie can be enjoyed for the gorey simplicity it contains or for those looking for something with a deeper meaning, something that requires some thought, you can glean deeper meanings on many of the things presented here as well. Romero says it best when he calls Dennis Hopper's character the zombie infested world's equivalent of Donald Rumsfeld.

So if you're looking for a film with a creepy atmosphere and plenty of gore, or are looking for an action oriented film with a message, Land of the Dead is worthy of a viewing.

Being given the HD version, as well as the SD version on a single disc is certainly a bonus over purchasing the DVD only version, despite the price difference. I don't have an HD-DVD player yet so my views concentrate on the SD version which looks good (but certainly no replacement for HD) for an SD release.

4 out of 5 stars A fitting sequal for the Dead series.......2007-01-04

Land of the Dead is a very good sequal to the original Dead trilogy. In HD it looks really good plus you get the film in regular definition on the other side which is a very cool thing. The extras are the same as the DVD version and none of them are in HD which is a bummer but 90% of the HD discs out there are like that.

4 out of 5 stars George A. Romero proves that zombies still creep us out.......2006-08-07

We should have known that if George A. Romero was going to go back to the well of the living dead another time he was going to come up with something different. What "George A. Romero's Land of the Dead" (the director's name goes up top so you know this is not merely another remake of one of his zombie films, like last year's "Dawn of the Dead") offers is two variations on the familiar theme. The first is in this brave new world humanity has found a way of perpetuating the old divide between the "haves" and "haves not," even when there are all those zombies out there suggest it should now be "us" versus "them." Kaufman (Dennis Hopper) has set up Fiddler's Green, a luxury high rise on an island between a couple of rivers (think the location of Three River Stadium in Romero's old stomping ground of Pittsburgh even though the movie is shot in Toronto). There the "haves" live while the rest of the island has the "have nots," some of whom are hired as mercenaries to go out into the world and bring back "necessities." Apparently money still matters in the "Land of the Dead," or perhaps people are merely trying to hold on to the old way of life, because the poor are not listening to those advocating going and taking away from the rich.

Consequently, humanity has found a way to survive. You can compare the more active approach of "Land of the Dead" with the mall rats of "Dawn of the Dead," who found a passive means of existence. Kaufman has built Dead Reckoning, a gigantic armored vehicle that leads foraging parties out into the world. These parties are led by Riley (Simon Baker), whose primary goal is getting everybody back alive, which does not always happen. That is because he works with Cholo (John Leguizamo), who has a different idea of necessities, one attuned to the fine tastes of Kaufman. Both men believe they are on their last mission at the start of this 2005 film, Riley because he will have now earned enough to pay for a car to get out of town and Cholo because he believes he has now earned the chance to move on up to Fiddler's Green. Both are wrong and that sets up the conflict to come.

This is where the second variation comes into play. Kaufman not only created a high rise where the "haves" are protected from that "have nots," some of whom actually help the "haves" have even more, but the entire island is zombie proof. This forces Romero to change the zombie part of the equation, and so we are introduced to Big Daddy (Eugene Clark), who runs a gas station and has a moment akin to when the ape looks at the thigh bone in "2001: A Space Odyssey." Just to help us along the voice over at the start of the film warn us that if the zombies ever develop anything approaching rudimentary thinking skills that would be a bad thing, a very bad thing indeed. So, of course, that is what happens. After all, if you can have bad humans, then you can have good zombies (Joss Whedon has convinced me being dead does not make a character inherently bad).

Having a zombie to root for is quite a different experience, but Romero also delivers on the guts and gore when the zombies go into their patented feeding frenzy. The narrative can offer all the sly social satire it wants, we watch these movies to be disgusted by the bloody scenes of cannibalism. The people Romero hires to do makeup and special effects are clearly on the cutting edge when it comes to this type of work. Even when you watch the DVD special features and you see what they are doing in bright light most of it will still creep you out, so the scenes in the film shot at night or in the shadows with the liberal application of blood and other things it is even worse (which is a good thing in a zombie movie).

The bottom line is that Romero delivers just what his fans want with this movie so that there is not a problem with failing to meet expectations. No, "Land of the Dead" is not the best of the bunch, but for my money nothing will surpass the original "Night of the Living Dead." The important thing is that here we are four films into the series, limiting ourselves to just the Romero helmed ones, and the series is certainly going a lot strong than the other comparable horror series, all of which have been abandoned by their creators (which is either a cause or effect). Final Note: Look for Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright of "Shaun of the Dead" fame as the photo booth zombies in one of the classic cameos of the early 21st century.

Look out! This "Unrated Director's Cut" edition is Full Screen and not widescreen. I was really bummed when I purchased this.

If you want widescreen, get the Unrated Edition instead of this one.

Director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) fortunately brings some crackle to this otherwise unexciting sci-fi drama about two once-dead, biologically-regenerated soldiers (Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren) who turn against one another when Van Damme's character has memories of his previous life. Emmerich is typically only as good as his scripts, and this one is pretty flat. The two stars do exactly what you'd expect them to do and nothing more. The DVD release has a wide presentation, Dolby sound, trailers, notes, and Spanish subtitles. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Probably Lundgren's best film.......2007-06-29

Van Damme plays a soldier who just wants to go home and Lundgren plays a crazed soldier who has a [...] for ears. The movie begins in Vietnam with these two soldiers who get into an argument over Van Damme's allegiance to his Sargent (Lundgren); they end up killing each other over it. The army has found a way of resurrecting the dead and these two come back as unisols whenever the army requires them. The project is very successful they have a number of successful missions until Van Damme sides with a nosy reporter snooping around looking for a story. Soon Lundgren is back to his old self and it looks like these two are headed for another Vietnam repeat. Van Damme wants to go home just like before but now Lundgren sees Van Damme as a traitor and wants to kill him. I think Lundgren is a bit arrogant he obviously tries to outdo Van Damme on the stage and this makes this movie probably one of Lundgren's best movies because his acting is superior. I was dumbfounded, I didn't think he could do it and I enjoyed this movie as a result.

4 out of 5 stars The war is not over for the unisols and you.......2006-11-19

Two soldiers kill each other in the Vietnam war. Their bodies are packed in ice and later regenerated to become cyborg-like soldiers for special missions. Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play the roles of soldiers very convincingly. Van Damme is the good guy and Lundgren is the bad guy. There is also a beautiful journalist lady, which hangs out with Van Damme.

There is a lot of military action and shooting in this movie. The universal soldiers take part in resolving hostage situations. The first site is a spectacular-looking water dam at a hydro power station. There is also a futuristic-looking huge armoured truck in which the universal soldiers (unisols) live. Their bodies are kept at low temperature and they have to get medical injections in order to stay alive.

There is a large element of fiction in this movie, because dead people cannot be brought back to life in the way that the movie suggests. However, if you suspend disbelief, I'm sure that you will enjoy this high-gear non-stop action flick. I don't give it a full 5 star rating, because there are too many shootings, gruesome bloody scenes and the restaurants, hotels and gas station in the movie look very run-down. But it made me think that we are all universal soldiers who have a special mission in our own lives. Do you agree?

5 out of 5 stars Ultimate Combat .......2006-08-30

Universal Soldier is one of the best action films from Jean Claude Van Damme. The film was released in 1993. The movie is based on an awfully chilly idea of a secret government project to use the reanimated corpses of dead soldiers as Universal Soldiers. These soldiers are really killer combat zombies that are programmed to receive commands remotely. They are extremely efficient killer machines that are impervious to pain, are quick to heal, and pretty much unstoppable although they tend to overheat if they stay active for too long.

In this movie, Jean-Claude Van Damme stars as a man who was supposedly killed in the war in Vietnam. He is revived in a secret biochemical, regenerative experiment as a cyborg that is controlled by the people who made him. The project initially proceeds according to plan. However, Van Damme starts recalling memories in a series of flashes from his past, and he eventually remembers the bloodthirsty, psychotic and vindictive Sergeant (Dolph Lundgren), who is also now turned into a cyborg, and is evil to the core. The fight between them resumes from where they left when they were alive. The action really gets hot when van Damme regains his memory and eventually leads to his freedom from being controlled by his creators. But the creators are not prepared to let Van Damme go free without them doing everything they can to get him back and under their control once again.

Both Jean-Claude Van Damme and Dolph Lundgren play their respective roles exceptionally well. The pretty and sexy Alley Walker, who plays the reporter who joins Van Damme on his fight against the Universal Soldier, also gives a good performance.

Those who love action movies will be thrilled by the fierce fist fights, unforgettable stunts and kickboxing action that will compel you to watch it again and again. I recommend anybody who likes Van Damme movies or good action movies to get "Universal Soldier." It does not have the best storyline or the best plot, but it is entertaining and exciting all the same.

5 out of 5 stars very swarve and cool.......2005-10-01

This film ticks all boxes to be honest, action, comedy, emotion.

Im not going to tell you what its about because it already tells you by amazon.

This film is very swarve and cool because of the storyline, the way the soldiers dress, walk and act. Dolph lundgren plays the part of andrew scott very well. By far the best character. I love the start of the soldiers being ressurected.

The funniest part was when van damme. luc devreaux was eating in the cafe, he wants more and more food. its absolutely hilarious. Also where one of the soldiers eats a lump of raw meat in the supermarket.

The best character in this movie is Andrew Scott (lundgren). he is one of the all time best baddys in my book.

This film is extremely under-rated. 5/5 for me no doubt.

recommended to anybody that likes good films.

5 out of 5 stars shocking and pleasing and much more.......2005-02-25

it gets laughs in its comicness in certain scenes

the diner scene where the soldier orders alot of food and keeps eating and the guy says how you gonna pay for this and the soldier says "I just want to eat, I don't wanna hurt you, then he kicks ass while still enjoying his meal. and his reporter female friend comes in and says "good meal" as a question that is. and he says without words "makes a happy sigh" that's hilarious. and how she looks around and see everyone who got their ass kicked from keeping him from eating his food
priceless movie
