Customer Reviews:
Very disappointing..........2005-09-09
After reading the book I was extremely disappointed by this poor attempt. I had the 'bad joss' of actually buying the dvd after reading the book. If you hadn't read the book the film would be truly incomprehensible, and if you read the book you would feel a tremendous void. As many other reviewers have said, Taipan needs to be reincarnated as a mini-series of some sort to afford it proper treatment.
Tai Pan/Noble House.......2005-09-06
Tai Pan is more than a chick flick or criticzing of Bryan Brown. It is a prelude to a very good mini series: Noble house! If you haven't seen Noble House you have missed an excellent journey thru banking & financing in the power people. P. Brosnan is the supreme smooth talker. Lots of intrigue & dirty tricks. If you haven't seen this one order it from Amazon!!
DANGER......DANGER Tai Pan fans.......2005-08-26
If you haven't read the book don't even think about watching this movie. If you have read the book be prepared to be disappointed.
Bryan Brown was terrible as Dirk Straun (and I don't mean just the accent), can anyone who read the book picture Kyra Sedgwick as "Hag" Straun (not even close), Janine Turner is wasted as Shevaun (did she say three sentences in the whole movie?), and Captain Orlov is straight out of comic book central casting, just to name a few atrocities!
The telling of the story is incomprehensible, the viewer never picking up -- let alone understanding -- the interplay between the characters or the motivation behind their actions (not even close). As with other Clavell novels, there is just too much going on behind the scenes to capture it all in a 120 minute movie. I would love to see the story told as Tolkien's Lord of Rings trilogy was told, three - three hour movies. Maybe someone can tempt Peter Jackson into tackling this as one of his major undertakings. One can hope!
Not bad at all despite compressed plot.......2004-05-08
Admittedly, this is much less of a movie than Tai-Pan is of a book. But the book is a giant among books, and the show is still a good show. Those who have read the book, rather than savaging it for its divergence from the book (which, in any case, would require a mini-series to do its layering and complexity justice, not a 2-hour show) should treat it as a kind of visual accompaniment to the story - good casting, good handling of some powerful scenes. Alright, they were much more powerful in the book, but it's not all the time that readers of a splendid book get the opportunity to see a capable visual incarnation that does justice to the characters, at least, if not to the plot. Maybe if the show had been titled "Selected Scenes from Tai-Pan" rather than "Tai-Pan" it would have been better received by purists.
What I'm trying to say is it did treat the subject material well, although obviously it couldn't pack everything which makes us love the book into just two hours. In an adaptation of a book, when you can recognise each character instantly before the character's name is mentioned it's always a good sign - where there's good casting, it's a sign that it's a sensitive adaptation, and this was the case with Tai-Pan. I thought Bryan Brown was very good as Dirk Struan; I'm not Scottish, so I couldn't tell that his accent was as fake as many others seem to think it.
I can see how those who haven't read the book would find it laughable, though, because due to the compression of the plot you don't really get to know the characters and understand their motivations from scratch. Some of Clavell's magnificent dialogue from the book might sound weird in the show, or lacking in punch, for those without a prior acquaintance of the book, because of this lack of emotional set-up. That's why I think it's best for those who have read the book, who already know the characters and can watch them fully-fledged, so to speak, as the show doesn't spend time introducing the audience to the characters.
Perhaps the reason that fans of James Clavell's books are so vociferous in their criticism of this show, sometimes, is because they are acclimatised to splendid, detailed and heartfelt adaptations of so many of his other books - the Shogun mini-series, the Noble House mini-series and the King Rat film. Why, Clavell fans are really so fortunate already when it comes to screen adaptations! :) If we lowered our expectations a little, we'd see that Tai-Pan, too, is not that bad a treatment of the book at all!
Slick but watchable.......2004-04-21
Fans of Clavel will want to watch this if only to satisfy an appetite for his work, however compromised. From Sho-gun to Noble House to Tai-Pan to King Rat, these books are some of the most entertaining adventure stories around. The Shogun DVD series, widely regarded as exceptional and the under-rated King Rat feature film are now joined by this slick adaptation of Tai-Pan. I watched it as a mini-series. Because I was familiar with the Book and Clavel, I suffered thru the superficialities and slick production for a time but then predictably allowed myself to become engrossed in the story line. As will you.
Add it to your collection but stick it behind the Shogun box set.

Description
Shu Qi (The Transporter, So Close, Millennium Mambo, Jackie Chan's Gorgeous) stars in this unforgettable romance set in 1974 China, near the end of the Cultural Revolution. On her way back from a family visit, young female intellectual Xing-Yu (Shu) meets the equally young and rebellious Si-Mong (newcomer Liu Hua) and the two fall in love. When Xing-Yu's childhood friend and lover Yuan gets into a fight with Si-Mong, Xing-Yu tries to make peace between the two jealous rivals. Her attempts for truce further draw her into a forbidden and passionate relationship instead.
Customer Reviews:
The Foliage.......2007-02-03
An different kind of love story that unfolds over several decades. Shu Qi, as usual does a good job with what's she's given. Four stars!
Passionate,forbbidden love story.......2005-11-20
This is a wonderful movie,a very elaborate peice of work on Chinese Communist leader's Mao ruling and governing of China in 1974.
The natives of the country were then divided in to various infantries, wear green and dull-looking clothes, and addressed each other as 'comrades'. Life was tough, and those living inthe rural plains wants to go the city.
Politics aside,The Foliage is mostly a love story.Shu Qi,who recently won Best Actress in the Golden Horse Awards (Chinese equivalent of the Oscars) for her perfomance in Three Times, portrays convincingly as Xing-Yu,a young female intellectual who has just return from the city state, and is awaiting for the goverment to grant her a discharge to move to the city.
Here,on the way back home, she befriends a young rebel,Sie Mong, who falls for her.It did not help when Xing-Yu's childhood sweetheart felt indignant as he realises she, too,is in love with Sie Mong.Because Sie Mong and Xing-Yu are both from different infantries (that is,communities),they have to share a forbidden love affair.Expect lots of clashes, fights and the death of a close friend.
The movie also goes to some 29 years later. It is poignant,as the two young lovers were not together.Xing-Yu later married, and it was only her journey back to the village for her husband's burial that she meets Sie Mong.It was only then she realised she and Sie Mong still love one another.I didn't quite get the ending part, the one where a young Xing-Yu chased after a bus while Sie Mong looks out,for in the beginning of the movie, there was another version, that is Sie Mong stopped the bus driver for Xing-Yu to come on board.
Whatever it is,i think this is a brilliant movie. It is between two young intelletuals pursing a passionate, yet forbidden love affair. It does not help that both leads,Shu Qi and Liu Ye (Sie Mong) are both eye candies.

too bad :(.......2005-09-17
While the female lead is extremely attractive, the movie as a whole is ugly! The plot, to recover a stolen relic, is so uninteresting & unimportant that I almost fell asleep. The fighting is sparse & the bad editing makes the occasional fight scene a visual disaster. Uneventful, uninteresting & disastrous. I wanted to dip my DVD player into boiling water after running this flick.
Sometimes smokin'.......2002-08-21
Some exciting action set pieces help weak story of a female Interpol agent who is trying to find a supermodel/thief who is on the run from her own problems. Padded, with dopey Filipino cab driver sidekicks, but good enough action to recommend.
A sad attempt.......2000-09-01
I thought this movie was by far the nothing more than an utter bore fest. If you have trouble sleeping try this DVD half way through I guarantee sleeping will no-longer be your affliction. Oh and the costumes were so dated that I thought Muscle shirts were in style again. I hope this helps in sorting through the really bad Hong Kong Joints. Note: Mad fake action and poor acting its great comb if you like being ripped off. Learn from my mistake! PLease!

From a Guys Perspective.......2003-02-26
Don't let the title fool you guys. In my opinion it is Chow's most under rated movie of all time. The only thing with this movie is that it helps to know the chinese culture and ideas to understand some of the humor (yeah you gwai-los). I mean the opening scene is just hilarious, but would the U.S. come up an idea like that? I mean I guess it would be a little bit of a culture shock.
I must inform you guys it is a chick flick, but the comedy factor in this movie will please both sexes. Like someone previously said "it is a good date movie" or just a middle of the week evening movie. That is only if you're both into that sort of thing.
I am not saying everyone will like this entire movie, but the guys should like the first half of the movie and the women should like the whole thing. I mean Chow acting the way that he does in this movie is uncanny. It is not your typical Chow role of either the handsome, sophisticated guy that the girl always falls for or the gun blazing Chow. You must see the movie to understand.
So don't rush to see it, but for sure one everyone should watch if you're into the Hong Kong movies.
The Greatest Lover.......2002-06-05
Movie was good in the beginning for a used DVD even if purchase as new. Halfway into movie, picture kept on freezing. My opinion don't buy any DVD unless in English.
One of CYF's greatest roles that's underrated!!!.......2002-04-29
Ok, so this isn't "My Fair Lady" however it is definitely very similar. Chow Yun-fat is awesome as Locomotive Fat/Nelson Chow and Anita Mui is awesome as his trainer Anita. While most people aren't used to Chow Yun-fat as a comedian, they're really missing out here. By the way, this is the longest comedy ever made by Chow Yun-fat himself, nearly 2 hours long!!! I highly recommend this movie on a rainy night or while on a romantic date!!!
