Daredevil (Widescreen Edition)

Editorial Review:
Amazon.com
Darker than its popular comic-book predecessor Spider-Man, the $80 million extravaganza Daredevil was packaged for maximum global appeal, its juvenile plot beginning when 12-year-old Matt Murdock is accidentally blinded shortly before his father is murdered. Later an adult attorney in New York's Hell's Kitchen, Murdock (Ben Affleck) uses his remaining, superenhanced senses to battle crime as Daredevil, the masked and vengeful "man without fear," pitted against dominant criminal Kingpin (Michael Clarke Duncan) and the psychotic Bullseye (Colin Farrell), who can turn almost anything into a deadly projectile. Daredevil is well matched with the dynamic Elektra (Jennifer Garner), but their teaming is as shallow as the movie itself, which is peppered with Marvel trivia and cameo appearances (creator Stan Lee, Clerks director and Daredevil devotee Kevin Smith) and enough computer-assisted stuntwork to give Spidey a run for his money. This is Hollywood product at its most lavishly vacuous; die-hard fans will argue its merits while its red-leathered hero swoops and zooms toward a sequel. --Jeff Shannon

Fly with the U.S. Navy's elite Blue Angels demonstration squadron in the breathtaking video The Magic of Flight, which explains the basic principles of what enables airplanes (and birds) to fly, what creates lift, how planes maneuver, how planes land again. Going back to the Wright Brothers' experiments at Kitty Hawk, the documentary explores how the intrepid bicycle makers ruminated on the elements of flight for many an hour before even attempting to assemble their first aircraft. The Blue Angels put into action the discoveries made by the Wright Brothers, as they make their selections, train, and perform.Pilots push their high-performance fighter planes through difficult but graceful maneuvers for amazed air-show audiences, demonstrating where the state of the art really lies for 21st-century flying. For all the skills of the pilots, however, the most astonishing part of the video would have to be the camera work, with cameras mounted on the planes' bellies, noses, and cockpits to give an up-close view of what the machines are really capable of. Planes fly arm's length apart during maneuvers where the slightest misstep would mean certain catastrophe. The Magic of Flight does indeed go a long way toward capturing the wonder of flying, with spectacular camera work, editing, and production. --Jerry Renshaw

You wouldn't know it by watching the mostly ridiculous escapades on display in Wild America, but this comedy/adventure for young boys is marginally based on the true story of Marshall, Mark, and Marty Stouffer, three young brothers who successfully pursued their dream of becoming wildlife filmmakers. From their home in the South, the Stouffer boys embark on a cross-country trek to the West, where they hope to get rare footage from inside the dreaded Cave of the Sleeping Bears. Along the way they encounter cute British tourist girls, deadly alligators, a rampaging moose, and an Air Force fighter on a bombing range. In other words, Wild America is about as contrived as it could possibly be and still claim to be based on reality, but it is harmless enough for young viewers with its wholesome message about bravery, hard work, and family togetherness. Jonathan Taylor Thomas (from television's Home Improvement) leads the young cast of adventurers. --Jeff ShannonCustomer Reviews:

Spider-Man vs. Daredevil isn't a question of vs. for very long, as they soon get over their initial misunderstandings and team up to battle the Kingpin. It parallels the original Marvel comics on which the story is based, which also saw the corpulent crime lord becoming the nemesis of both heroes. Several more of their arch-foes, such as the Chameleon, also put in appearances in a plot that revolves around Peter Parker accepting a job offer from philanthropist Wilson Fiske, not realizing that Fiske is in fact... but that would be telling. Suffice to say that Daredevil has at least some of the answers. This whole generation of Marvel animations, which began with the groundbreaking X-Men series, is of an extraordinarily high quality. Their visual style is influenced by the best of the comics' artists, the protagonists are properly fleshed out, and--proving that cartoons don't have to be dumb--the plots and story arcs often have the kind of sophistication you'd expect from the best kind of adventure novel. This example is typically faultless in execution and, unlike most Saturday-morning fodder, bears repeated viewing. --Roger Thomas

As the story goes, the Finnish quartet of "stunt comics" known as the Dudesons (who now enjoy their own American TV series) were abusing themselves on camera long before Johnny Knoxville and the Jackass crew gained popularity on MTV, and the feature-length Dudesons Movie compiles a year's worth of their most cringe-inducing misadventures in Europe and America. In terms of sheer pain, The Dudesons clearly trump the Jackass boys by a long shot: shotgun blasts are taken to the chest, pub darts are hurled into bare skin, and a complete skeleton's worth of bones are fractured over the course of the film (and one thumb is lost in the course of a berserk bear hunt). Eventually, the Dudesons decide to take their act on the road as part of the rock festival circuit, which leads to a trip to the United States where they wreak unholy hell on the apartment of Jackass alum Steve-O. As with all stunt comedy, there's little room for anything but a polarized attitude towards The Dudesons' antics--you'll either find it hilarious or horrifying, and the extras, which include an additional 20 minutes of mayhem and their guest shot on Bam Margera's Viva La Bam series, probably won't sway your opinion one way or another. --Paul GaitaDescription

Anchor Bay's Incredible Hulk double-disc set offers The Incredible Hulk Returns (1988) and The Trial of the Incredible Hulk (1989), the first two of three made-for-TV movies featuring the Marvel Comics monster hero that aired after the CBS series' demise in 1982. Both discs also include a considerable amount of supplemental material, including interviews with star Lou Ferrigno and comic book legend Stan Lee. Bill Bixby returns as tormented scientist David Banner (in addition to executive producing Returns and directing Trial), as does Ferrigno as his green-skinned alter ego. In both titles, they are paired with other Marvel creations; in Returns, Banner is joined by the Mighty Thor to thwart industrial espionage, and in Trial, he's defended by blind lawyer Matt Murdock (Rex Smith), a.k.a. Daredevil. Bixby's always-credible presence brings believability to the fanciful storylines, and both features have the right mix of drama and action that should satisfy fans of the series and its graphic origins alike. --Paul GaitaCustomer Reviews:
