If Sylvester Stallone plays the world's number one assassin in this thriller, that must make Antonio Banderas, well, number two. The two are competing to hit the same target for a $20-million payoff, and their challenge takes them from explosion to explosion on a cat-and-mouse chase from Seattle to Mexico. Julianne Moore plays the cagey cat fancier and computer hacker who possesses a stolen computer disc that makes her a prime target for bad guys, and Robert Rath (Stallone) is only too happy to come to her defense. Director Richard Donner handles action sequences with adequate flair and has a good time blowing things up. Banderas has fun with the nonsensical plot, and Moore is enjoyable in one of her big-budget mainstream roles. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Action start to finish.......2007-06-01

When I put this DVD in, and hit play, action started. The whole way through the 2 hour movie, there is action non stop, clear up to the end in the "No Goodbyes" scene. This is a great movie. My favorite part was in the taxi when Robert Rath (Stallone) And Miguel Bain (Banderas) meet.

If youre a fan of either Banderas or Stallone, then I strongly suggest this movie to you.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-02-04

Superb. Outstanding. Great performances by my favourite i.e. Sylvester Stallone meanwhile well supported by Antonio.

3 out of 5 stars Before the Matrix.......2006-12-12

Assassins is the Wachowsky Brothers film everyone forgets about, although perhaps because here the duo share screenplay credit with the variable Brian Helgeland with Richard Donner taking directorial duties. Originally intended as a vehicle for Sean Connery and Tom Cruise as the tired topdog and the precocious pretender in each others sights but settling for Stallone and Banderas instead, it's a pretty good thriller with some good setpieces and an interesting take on its antiheroes as people who have being lying for so long they've almost forgotten who they really are. Sadly, the film is seriously let down by Antonio Banderas' wildly over-enthusiastic performance (and that's putting it politely): for the number two hitman, he goes out of his way to be as conspicuous as possible at every opportunity. But it's still more than a notch above the average action movie.

4 out of 5 stars A Movie Where You Can Feel The Heat Coming Of The Screen!.......2006-09-06

Assassins is a great action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas.

Richard Donner, the director of the Lethal Weapon Films, has done a fantastic job as always, creating a world with characters that you won't forget that easy.
Sylvester Stallone does a good job as a hitman who doesn't wanna kill anymore, but still gets new offers he doesn't wanna refuse. While Stallone's character is on the job, a rivale pops up: Antonio Banderas. Now Banderas is perfectly cast as the triggerhappy killer who only wants one thing: being number 1 in the hitman world. For that he has to kill Stallone's character.
Not the most original story in the world, but that doesn't matter: it's pure entertainment and it gives a lot of thrilling moments and action sequences.

From the moment the two characters meet in some of the most beautiful locations and thrilling situations, the heat is on. Gunfire, explosions, sweat, thrilling conversations between the two: the heat will come out of your tv set! The atmosphere that is hanging around in this film is truely fantastic.
The action has been filmed in a fantastic and professional way and it will keep you on the edge of your seat. There are a few flaws here and there, and a few things that you musn't take to seriously, but because of the fantastic speed and feel of the film, it won't spiol the fun for even one moment!
This film is truely underrated by the media, so my suggestion is: ignore the media and watch this thriller, cause it will entertain you!
If you are a fan of Stallone, Banderas, Richard Donner's work, or just in the mood for some fun action entertainment, I would highly recommend this film!

Good popcorn entertainment with a lot of thrills and chills.
So sit back, relax, put your feet up and enjoy watching this!

5 out of 5 stars Watch two assassins in action for the price of one..........2006-08-02

If you have watched 'The Mechanic', you will certainly see a parallel between that movie & this movie. Both are fast-paced action movies about two assassins in conflict with each other.

'The Mechanic' starred Charles Bronson in the lead role of a veteran contract hit-man, Arthur Bishop. He took on a cocky but ambitious young man, Steve McKenna, played by Jan-Michael Vincent, to be his protege. The latter turned the table on the master.

In this movie, 'Assassins', Sylvester Stallone played the lead role of a veteran contract hit-man, Robert Bath, who apparently was number one in the business. A cocky, but ambitious young hit-man, Miguel Bain, played by Antonio Banderas, came into the scene with the fatalistic idea of becoming the number one.

Intertwined in their personal conflict of hierarchy, appeared a woman computer hacker, Electra, played by Julianne Moore, as well as a mysterious employer, Nikolai Taslinkov, who seemingly was connected to all the three key characters in the movie.

For the rest of the movie, it was an exciting cat & mouse game between Bath & Bain, with Electra eventually teaming up with Bath to elude from & deal with Bain. The action sequences throughout the movie, especially the shoot-out inside a hotel in the first half & the shoot-out in an abandoned building (in Mexico) towards the end, were really good.

It was quite fun to watch Antonio Banderas playing the hot-headed, crazy guy. He was really good, as good as Sylvester Stallone, who, as typical & in most of his movies of this genre (Nighthawks, Cobra, Judge Dredd, Demolition Man...), played the cool, confident character...maybe, a little stiff in some way. Julianne Moore, a very accomplished British actress, unfortunately had an understated role, although she did her best.

On the whole, 'Assassins' has been an entertaining - never a dull moment - action movie to watch...especially when you can watch two assassins for the price of one!

What counts is not who makes the first move, but who survives the last! Sylvester Stallone and Antonio Banderas are rival hit men in Assassins, a thriller directed by Richard Donner (Lethal Weapon) and scripted by Andy Wachowski & Larry Wachowski (The Matrix) and Brian Helgeland (Mystic River). Stallone portrays ex-CIA explosives expert Ray Quick in The Specialist, hired by drop-dead beauty May Munro (Sharon Stone) to wreak vengeance on a Miami crime syndicate. But the mob isn't going down without a fight. And as the incendiary action unfolds, an ominous question arises. Is May also setting up Ray?

I too prefer a letterbox (widescreen) transfer over a full screen one because the letterbox format is the way you see the movie in a theater. However unlike the widescreen movies of the 50's & 60's you don't lose any picture for fullscreen versions of recent (70's & after) movies. For the older movies they had to pan & scan the image to fit the screen and you lost part of the picture that way so you buy the letterbox version to get the full image. But today they just open up the matte meaning you see stuff at the top & bottom that you didn't see in the theater. Sure I bought this full screen disc. It was agood way to get two great movies for the one low price. Not all double movie (2 on one disc) sets are full screen. I've bought some (like The Fugitive/US Marshalls) where both movies were in letterbox format. Oh & for these sets they are flipper discs meaning one movie per side of the disc. A great way to get a pair of movies!!

Very disappointed to find these two films have been reformated to fit "your TV!" Not my TV! If you like "full-screen" versions, you will be well pleased. If you collect widescreen videos, don't buy this package!

1 out of 5 stars The worst movie I have ever seen.......2006-10-28

I was forced to give it a star but it does not deserve any. It is slow and boring, the only time you stop yawning is to turn into disgust. It is a waste of time and a shame for the good Colombian movie makers.

5 out of 5 stars Impressive, unpleasant, but definitely worthwhile........2006-10-02

I am not sure how much of this film is autobiographical and how much is fiction. I do know that Fernando Vallejo, the novelist who wrote the novel "Our Lady of the Assassins" as well as this film's screenplay, is a reknowned Colombian author who, like the Fernando in this film, spent much of his life in voluntary exhile. (In the real Fernando's case, the exhile was in Mexico and Italy). In another series of novels Vallejo has written extensively about the difficulties of growing up gay in Colombia, so there is a possibility that in the novel and film versions of "Our Lady of the Assassins" we are getting glympses of his own life experience coming back to Medellin as a middle-aged man.

Both the film and the novel present a touching but in many ways distasteful romance between an affluent older man and an underaged hustler/hired killer from the Medellin underclass. Neither the film nor the novel pass judgment on the relationship, but both make the viewer/reader squirm. There is the obvious question of poor youth being exploited by an older man. Additionally, the older man is an unapologetic snob, a hedonistic social-darwinist whose contempt for the indigent around him reflects very poorly on the Colombian bourgeoisie. The younger man, beneath the angel face, is nihilistic and an apparently uncritical respository of crass international pop culture. The duo's comments about their lives and their meanderings through Medellin depict a very sick society--a portrait that is the thrust of Vallejo's novel.

Other commentors on this webpage suggest that they do not find the wanton violence in this film credible. Unfortunately, the press reports on life in Bogota and Medellin (particularly the latter, as one of the capitals of the cocaine cartels) bear out Vallejo's portrait. So, too, do the stories of many affluent Colombians who have emigrated to Miami in order to escape violence. And sadly, the literature and films about slum children from other large Latin American cities--Pixote (Sao Paulo), Los Olvidados (Mexico City), Amores Perros (Mexico City)--touch on similar themes [See the recent Colombian novel "Satan", by Moreno, which is a portrait of Bogota gone to hell]. This is an unpleasant, painful portrait--and we are seeing the portrait through the eyes of people who are alternatively sympathetic and horrible. But the portrait is probably realistic, as are our guides.

The deliberate use of unsophisticated cameras in this film add to the feeling of cinema verite and enhance the film's impact. All in all, this is an impressive undertaking, and the film goes beyond the novel in engendering dispair over the well-being of Colombia.

    3 out of 5 stars Gallow's Humor.......2006-09-28

Some films have a sadistic streak, and the director of "Our Lady of the Assassins" has shown his with this absurdly ghoulish film. I cannot believe that life in Colombia is this hellish. The story is interesting but is so outlandish. As another reviewer said, many of the random killings are spurred on my stupid insults and complaints about bad service. It is not credible to think a young man could gun down two men on a train in broad daylight and just waltz away nonchalantly.
As far as the acting is concerned, this was a one man show. The progatonist--the writer who's come home--is clever and played decently. The other characters serve as an audience to his quick wit and as the link between the civilized world (the writer) and the violent, savage one (the two boys he has a relationship with). As another reviewer wrote, the symbolism is really heavy handed and propelled this film quickly into the realm of total absurdity.
That being said, I did find it entertaining in a ghoulish sort of way.

5 out of 5 stars Our Lady of the Assassins.......2006-09-21

If you enjoy independent films, you will certainly like this film. It is about life as a displaced youth of Columbia. Unlike the displaced youth of the U.S., they are on their own without any significant assistance. It is very sad, as this is an adaptation of the true story of Alexis. In the areas of the world where illegal drug producers force the disadvantaged youth into terrible life styles, there should be country mandated advocacy for the youth that are unwittingly manipulated.

    1 out of 5 stars Shockingly incompetant.......2006-05-25

Wow, this was honestly one of the worst movies I have ever seen. And this is coming from someone who loves small foreign flicks, whose favorite movie is the similarly-themed City of God. Our Lady of the Assassins may not be the worst movie I have ever seen, but it certainly the most incompetant. I can't stress enough how bad this movie is. I kept watching out of sheer wonder that anything could be this terrible. This film fails on so many levels that it is hard to list, but I'll give it a try:

First, the acting is gawd-awful. The actors are all unpofessionals, and it shows. They stiffly spout unconvincing dialogue; at every moment, we are aware that they are acting. Not once in the entire movie does it lose the feeling of a middle-school drama class. There is absolutely no romantic chemistry between the leads either; its almost painful to watch.

Oh, what next? How about the plot? Oh wait, there is no plot. The protagonists wander aimlessly throughout the city spouting nilihistic diologue that would have felt stale in Waiting for Godot, all the while shooting random people. That's it. The screenwriter mixes this bland existentialism with some of the most cheesy love lines ever set on film. Here's a sample: "What do you wish for?" "That we could be together forever!"

While the movie pounds its pretentious despair into your head, the incompetant direction undercuts this theme at every turn. The killing scenes are so poorly acted and coreographed that they become hilarious. The camara work is a dead ringer for a cheesy low-budget soap opera. Apparently the director is an industry veteran, which makes me feel like he must have this movie purposefully awful; but a bad movie is still a bad movie. Here's a tip: If you want us to buy into your grandiose existential themes on society, don't shoot yourself in the foot by filming a hilariously bad script with wooden actors and high school musical production values.

Easily the best of the TV Specials and movies released by FUNi, if you can only get one Lupin movie this year, make it this one. To be honest, I wasn't expecting much from this movie, other than the usual Lupin entertainment (which is always good, mind you), but what I got was the perfect blend of the dark undertone of early Lupin, yet all the sensitivity of Miyazaki's Lupin from 'Castle of Caglisotro'. And better yet, my main man Mr.Strait wrote the English adaption WONDERFULLY. Not with the same 'throw away' gags that FUNimation often likes to do, but with truly impressive dialogue, complimented greatly by his voice for Lupin. Forget the mispronouncing of Lupin's name, it's easily ignored. The video and audio were excellent, as usual. With Japanese and English on the DVD. I'd only ask now that we got other Dubs, too. I love seeing how different voice actors from all over the planet play these classic characters. But the special features aren't really. . . Special. But I'm sure the Japanese release didn't come with a commentary, which I'd love to hear.

Anywho, to wrap it up, great movie, good dub, sub-par special features. . But they don't really matter anyhow.

5 out of 5 stars Not Your Typical Lupin Movie.......2005-04-23

Island of Assassins, or In Memory of the Walther P-38 as it was originally called, is not the typical mostly-comedic Lupin film. This one has a darker and more series tone, but there is excellent comedy subtly sprinkled throughout the movie.

The animation is fluid, the character designs are different, but it doesn't take long to get used to them, and the action is plenty.

In this movie, Lupin finds himself going to the hidden Island of Assassins after his old, stolen Walther P-38 gun is used by someone in an assassin group to shoot Zenigata.

This island is also rumored to contain massive amounts of gold, so naturally, Lupin and crew go after that. But there's more going on at the island, and Lupin, Jigen, Goemon, and Fujiko find themselves right in the middle of a huge plot that divides the residence of the island down the middle.

We also get to learn about Lupin's past from his pre-Jigen years in this movie.

I loved this special! It was very engaging and with excellent pacing and fluid animation. Character designs didn't bother me at all, and I loved how it ended.

The man female character in this movie, other than Fujiko, is Ellen. I thought Ellen was an excellent character. I loved how she was introduced and how her character developed throughout the movie.

As for the DVD itself, the transfer was excellent. The video looked good and clean with no defects, and the audio was also great. The viewer could choose from English 5.1, English 2.0, and Japanese 2.0. There are dubtitles for the English track, and subtitles for the Japanese track, so be sure to choose the right one. The dub, asides from pronouncing Lupin's and Jigen's name incorrectly, was also done well.

Highly recommended. AnimeOnDVD gave this movie a grade of A, and I do as well. Don't even hesitate and pick this one up.

3 out of 5 stars Not the best Lupin, but decent.......2005-04-22

Another "just ok" Funimation production. The english dub is odd, full of voice actors I'm mostly unfamiliar with, and Lupin's face is drawn differently than I prefer. Special features are sparse.

As for the actual movie, it's typical Lupin, so entertaining action, but this one's no Castle of Cagliostro.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best DBZ DVDs.......2006-06-08

This was one of the first Dragonball Z DVDs I bought, and I was very impressed. The Androids Saga climaxes here, when Trunks, Vegeta, Krillin, Piccolo, and Tien discover Dr. Gero's lab. Goku, who fell ill in previous episodes, was taken back home by Yamcha. Dr. Gero activates Androids 17 and 18, who proceed to kill Gero and activate the giant Android 16. The Androids fly off to a mountainside roadway, where Vegata challenges Android 18 to a fight and gets a little more than he bargoned for...

Everything about this DVD is great. The sound quality and picture image are very good, and the episodes are 3 of the best in the series. Of course, it's best to see the earlier Android Saga episodes, but then watch this DVD. It's very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Rock on Android 17!.......2005-08-16

My son wanted this DVD because his favorite character in the Dragon Ball Z series is Android 17. He was not disappointed. Great DVD if you like the androids. It's a good add to your Dragon Ball Z collection.

    5 out of 5 stars DVD ANDROIDS - Assassins Episodes 118, 119, 120.......2001-07-25

This is the best Dragon Ball Z DVD in the world. It should be six stars! This DVD has it all.

Nightmare Comes True - The Z Fighters are now searching for Dr. Gero's lab. Instead of stopping the androids from being brought to life Vegeta wants to battle them! Trunks tries to warn his father of the dangers, but Vegeta won't listen.

Goku's Assassins - Androids 17 and 18 are now alive! Can the Z Fighters defeat the androids without Goku, who is ill? Dr. Gero is now planning to get revenge on Goku. Gero's plans are spoiled when he is destroyed by his own creations!

Deadly Beauty - Vegeta challenges Android 18 to a battle on the highway. This is the best battle in the Android Saga. Vegeta is very confident that he will win, but is he too confident?

If there is only one Dragon Ball Z DVD you can get it needs to be this one. Buy it now!

4 out of 5 stars Old "Skool" Kung Fu!!.......2006-06-12

I agree with the first reviewer,,this is another one of Shaw's best performance. This flick was entertaining from start to finish. The most impressive, was the chrystal clear transfer onto dvd,,,absolutely amazing!!The kung fu, simply too amazing. Talk about trends, this flick set them!!

5 out of 5 stars another great Shaw Brothers production with Gordon Liu.......2006-06-08

This is a great "old School" Hong Kong kung fu film. This movie is english dubbed, but it is not digitally remastered so it is a little blurry at some points, but nevertheless watchable.

The Four Assassins (aka Marco Polo) has a great story and magnificent kung fu training scenes and fight scenes. This movie does star a westerner(caucasian man), Richard Harrison. He plays Marco Polo, a man who aids Mongal ruler Kublai Khan. The mongal's goal is to kill the Chinese rebels. The Chinese rebels attempt to assassinate Kublai Khan, but his 3 kung fu expert bodyguards (one of them Gordon Liu) and his soldiers make this a difficult task. Four men, the "4 Assassins" learn kung fu to avenge their slain chinese brothers.

This may sound like an ordinary revenge story, but this movie has many unique events that make it a great movie. There are great fight scenes because each of the 4 assassins has their own special technique(iron palm/jumping/immunitiy to weapons/stength to topple boulders) making awesome fight scenes when they fight the mongal soldiers and the top 3 mongal bodyguards. Fight scenes include bow and arrows, spears, swords, and kung fu. If you are a fan of great kung fu movies this would be a great addition to one's collection.

5 out of 5 stars More Silvery Fun!.......2004-12-16

Volume 6 of Saint Seiya contains some of THE most memorable episodes in the series, with the limelight split 50/50 on Sanctuary's new Silver henchmen and Dragon Shiryu himself. Episodes included on this disc are:

"Steel Saints - Friends or Foes?": With the Saints getting their collective behinds handed to them, three new myserious characters suddenly come to the rescue. Problem is, are these guys friendly, or is there an ulterior motives behind somewhere?

"Medusa's Shield!": Introducing Perseus Algol, one of the strongest Silver Saints to appear so far after Lizard Misty. Not only is Algol fast and powerful, he also has a deadly weapon on his left arm -- one that would make a certain ol' Greek gorgon proud.

"Dragon's Sacrifice Blow!": When Algol actually seems to deliver on what the past Silver assassins fail to do, things are on the bleak for our heroes, especially the lone Dragon Shiryu. With his comrades removed from the heat of battle, Shiryu will have to use every strength left to defeat the toughest Silver Saint from Sanctuary.

"Attack of The Crow Army!": Saori is kidnapped by the eccentric oddball Crow Jamian, and it's up to Pegasus Seiya to rescue her. However, things become increasingly complicated when his sworn enemy Shaina decides to throw herself into the mix...

"The Burning Cosmos of Love!": Shaina is hellbent on having Seiya's head, and Jamian is quite insistent on escorting Saori to his boss back in Greece. This doesn't bide well with our heroes, especially with an unconscious Seiya and a somewhat stagnant Saori.. until she begins to exhibit an unusually large cosmos.

5 out of 5 stars Finally everything is getting really good.......2004-07-02

Volume 6 of this classic anime brings quite a few surprises character related. It is great to see that the show has no reserves in screwing up the characters to move along. This volume answers a few things from the prvious volume, then goes on to other events, and how the enemy was defeated will leave you in shock. Then episode 30 has one magnificent scene between the lead male and female character, and is a legendary scene in anime. Overall, great volume, and awesome old achool series. Highly recommended.

    Product Description

Reefer Madness is the quintessential cult classic. Originally made as a 1930's propaganda film, it was meant to scare America's youth away from drugs, showing them that one puff of the "demon weed" turns teens into raving reefer addicts. The height of camp entertainment! Includes BONUS "Hemp For Victory", a film by the US government on the merits of hemp.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Great Twofer!.......2006-06-08

I got the twofer from Promodvds ("Reefer Madness with Hemp for Victory" AND "Stoner Shorts vol.1") and was floored! If you have any interest in social history, or just want to laugh until you puke, you have to get this. The main features are 2 anti - drug films and 2 "social films". These were actually made to be played for kids in school! The "Social" films seem to be made for the purpose of discussion in maybe a high school social studies class or something. Get some friends together to watch these because I guarantee you'll wanna discuss this stuff MST3000 style! Oh, and the Betty Boop cartoons - I had NO idea she was so naughty, or controversial. I had looked this DVD up at stonershortsdvd [dot] com - there's more info than their amazon store, and there is a reel in quicktime of clips from the DVD- -I had to get this after seeing the reel and am so glad I did.

5 out of 5 stars Too young to know........2006-05-23

OMG! I'm 19 and never saw anything like these films in school. I got the Reefer Madness and Stoner Shorts Combo (type in Reefer Combo) These DVDs are totally funny, it's so wierd to see how far the goverment would go to try scare kids to convince them that drugs are bad rather than just show them the truth. Seriously hilarious. I mean, I just say no to drugs - but they do a pretty convincing job of the opposite! I highly (no pun intended) recommend both DVDs!

5 out of 5 stars Mad about Reefer!.......2006-05-23

Gotta get this! If you don't know about Reefer Madness it is a great Cult Classic - and this is the only version I know of with Hemp for Victory, which is a pretty odd flick on it's own. The government showing Farmers how to grow and harvest weed! I got it coupled with Stoner Shorts Vol.1, which is even better! (search for Stoner Shorts) The interface is as trippy as the rest of it. You can play all (straight thru) or play the "scrambled mix" - (just like your brain) I think this'll be great for my next party - even on in the background with the sound off, it's great the Betty Boop stuff coupled with the Vincent Collins short, really all of it is perfect - great price for what you get, especially with the extra free stuff, it's almost four times the Reefer Madness or Cocaine Fiends Length when added together. I would review each short, but there is so much to go over, their website does a decent job of explaining the parts if you're still wondering whether you should buy - plus there are some clips edited together there that you can download to your Ipod.

    5 out of 5 stars pineapple kisses.......2007-01-21

this movie was mabey the most entertaining movie i have ever seen! Not because it was an actual good movie but because it completely sucked! Its written, directed, produced, and staring the same guy- Ron Hall! Gearld Okamura's performance made the movie with random giggling and odd screching nosies , me and my friend were literally rolling on the floor laughing! I would recomened buying this movie used casue otherwise its a complete waste of $15! Buy this movie if u want to laugh ur gigglestick off at what could be the worst acting...ever! If ur into movies taht contain horrible acting and enjoy laughing at peoples attempt to act then we woud also recomend snakes on a train to! SO SAY THE PUMPKIN OVERLORDS!

    1 out of 5 stars Vampire Cheese.......2006-05-25

Vampire Assassins was pretty much unwatchable. Unless torturing yourself is your bag, I seriously recommend skipping this. Don't get me wrong... I love vampire films, even the cheesy low-budget ones, but this film was so bad, it's difficult to describe. The first 10 minutes was really enough to turn me off...It was like watching a highschooler's first attempt using the vhs video-recorder.

AVOID this film unless one of your relatives is in it and you want good blackmail material for years to come.

1 out of 5 stars Lions Gate does it again.......2005-11-07

More crud fron Lions Gate. They put together an attractive cover and buy these crummy films from independent producers for nothing and then sell 120,000 units to Blockbuster. Avoid buying from Lions Gate. This is all just garbage.

    1 out of 5 stars Don't even bother.......2005-09-20

Dude i rented this movie and I still feel ripped off the acting is terrible and the special effects look like they were done in photoshop, it mostly takes place in what to me looks like a costcos warehouse and the dude on the cover isn't even in the movie it stars sum out of shape dude runnin around armed with nothin but plastic daggers and bad acting its a miracle that this garbage was ever released DO NOT BUY THIS MOVIE!! unless your willing to laugh at how terrible this thing is.
