A flawed but stylish adaptation of the Chester Gould comic strip by director Warren Beatty, who also stars in the title role. The minimalist plot involves a battalion of baddies who confront the intrepid detective in a series of strung-together vignettes. Al Pacino is a comedic if overblown standout as Big Boy Caprice, and Madonna simply smolders as aggressive blonde bombshell Breathless Mahoney. It matters not that the plot is Spartan, as this dazzling eye candy is much enhanced by Stephen Sondheim's songs, including the Academy Award-winning ditty, "Sooner or Later (I Always Get My Man)." Beatty took his cue from the source material and concentrated on the relationships between these people, whether strained, romantic, or hateful. The performances are subtle and more amusing than you would expect from such a visually bold picture. Shot in bright, primary colors, this also won Oscars for Best Art/Set Direction and Makeup (for those inventively hideous criminals). Watch for well-known names, such as Dustin Hoffman and Dick Van Dyke, in cameo appearances and supporting roles. --Rochelle O'Gorman

Stanley Kramer's sprawling 1963 comedy about a search for buried treasure by at least a dozen people--all played by well-known entertainers of their day--is the kind of mass comedy that Hollywood hasn't made in many years. (Another example from around the same time is Blake Edwards's The Great Race.) After a number of strangers (including Milton Berle, Jonathan Winters, Sid Caesar, Phil Silvers, and others) witness a dying stranger (Jimmy Durante) identify the location of hidden money, a conflict-ridden hunt begins, watched over carefully by a suspicious cop (Spencer Tracy). The ensuing two and a half hours of mayhem has its ups and downs--some bits and performers are certainly funnier than others. But Kramer, who is better known for socially conscious, serious cinema (Guess Who's Coming to Dinner?), is in a mood for broad comic characterization, and some of his jokes are so intentionally obvious (Durante literally kicks a bucket when he dies), they'd have a place in Airplane! Watch for lots of cameo appearances, including Jerry Lewis (who had called Kramer and asked him why he hadn't been invited to participate). --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
The mother of all comedic chase movies.......2007-05-15
The best chase comedy ever. Great cast, locations. It brings back memories of LA area in the fifties and sixties. One of my favorite comedies of all time.
An absolute "must have"!.......2007-05-13
Sure... it's dated; that's part of its charm. That said, it's one of the most madcap, zany comedies I've ever seen and is a "must have" for those of us old enough to appreciate the all-star cast of comic icons. Also, if you love old cars, the vehicles you'll see in this movie are worth the price of the DVD alone. Pure entertainment.
One of the best comedies.......2007-05-12
This is a very funny movie with an all star comedy cast. From Jimmy Durante "kicking the bucket" to the fire escape at the end, you'll laugh all the way through. The number of comedy stars in this movie are almost overwhelming. I personally think Jonathon Winters steals the movie.
abolute madness, loved it!!!.......2007-04-11
I first saw this movie with my father when i was a young boy for some reason it never left my mind, so out of shear curiosity i purchased this movie and fell in love with again.
I later found out that there are a few of us that love this movie so much that they have taken pictures of all those wonderful places and made a montage of before and after pictures showing the "Big W" and the back yard where it once stood.
In conclusion i just loved this movie. What more can i say Oh btw Amazon got the movies to me in less than a week, isn't that great.
One of the best comedies ever.......2007-03-30
Great cast help make this one of the funniest movies ever.

Two of the juiciest roles in the American theater fall at the feet of Spencer Tracy and Fredric March, and both men make a meal of it. Inherit the Wind, based on the play by Jerome Lawrence and Robert E. Lee, is a slightly fictionalized account of the Scopes Monkey Trial, that galvanizing legal drama of the 1920s. When a young Tennessee teacher is prosecuted for teaching the theory of evolution in a public school, he receives unwanted public attention as well as the legal advice of a giant. Tracy plays the role based on Clarence Darrow, the eloquent defense attorney, and March storms his way through a part based on Williams Jennings Bryan, the failed presidential candidate (and famed orator) who prosecuted the case. Gene Kelly plays a character based on the acid-penned H.L. Mencken, reporting on the trial and caustically commenting on the absurdity of the human animal. Stanley (Judgment at Nuremberg) Kramer's direction is not especially subtle, but the verbal fireworks unleashed during the trial sequences are still stirring. Even the different styles of the actors are intriguing: March is all mannerism and false padding around the belly, while Tracy does his patented naturalistic grumbling. It would be nice if this story were a quaint period piece, but its issues and arguments keep reemerging in the headlines with each new generation. --Robert Horton
Description
Two-time Best Actor OscarÂ(r) winners* Spencer Tracy and Fredric March go toe-to-toe in this thrilling re-creation of the most titanic courtroom battle of the century. Garnering four Academy AwardÂ(r) nominations**, including Best Actor (Tracy), and featuring Gene Kelly in a rare, critically-acclaimed dramatic role, Inherit the Wind is powerful, provocative cinema and "a heaping measure of entertainment" (The Hollywood Reporter)! The controversial subject of evolution versus creation causes two polar opposites to engage in one explosive battle of beliefs. Attorney Clarence Darrow (Tracy) faces off against fundamentalist leader William Jennings Bryan (March) in a small Tennessee town where a teacher has been brought to trial for teaching Darwinism. Let the trial begin...and watch the sparks fly!
Customer Reviews:
Inherit the Wind.......2007-06-27
Stanley Kramer's spellbinding film features a deft performance by Tracy as the rumpled, deceptively plain-spoken Drummond (modeled on Clarence Darrow), matched by March's larger than life, virtuoso turn as Matthew Brady (based on William Jennings Bryan). Just sit back, pretend you're sitting in that humid courtroom, and watch two old pros at work. You'll re-live history. Also look for Gene Kelly in one of his only serious, non-dancing roles as a cynical journalist based on H.L. Mencken.
Strangely, this film may be more relevant today than when it was made.......2007-05-21
Inherit the Wind is the broad fictional adaptation of the real-life Scopes Monkey Trial in which John Scopes, a football coach who taught evolution in a high school classroom, was put on trial and the city of Dayton, Tennessee was put on the map... and not in a particularly pleasing light.
Spencer Tracy and Frederic March turn out tremendously powerful performances as opposing lawyers in the trial, while Gene Kelly stands aloofly by as a flippant reporter for the Boston Globe.
What is especially striking about Inherit the Wind is the relevance of the movie (almost 50 years later) to the current political atmosphere). In the 20's the law said that evolution couldn't be taught, and now it's creationism that can't be taught. As Tracy's Henry Drummond says in the film, "Well, that's evolution for you."
The acting throughout the film is outstanding and it hardly feels like a two hour film, particularly in black and white. The entire film builds momentum until it all comes to a head at the very end with the showdown between Drummond (Tracy) and Brady (March). This is not a film to be missed if you're at all interested in history (although it's a loose adaptation) and the current intelligent design debate.
Included on the disc is the original trailer for the film, which features a few clips, director Stanley Kramer discussing the film, and lists awards that it had won in festivals. It's interesting to see a trailer that old and compare it to our current ones.
A Real Zinger.......2007-03-30
Stanley Kramer's "Inherit the Wind" seems a bit dated with Ernest Laszlo's Oscar-nominated black & white cinematography. Frederick March plays Matthew Harrison Brady that is loosely based on William Jennings Bryant. March won two Oscars, one for "Dr Jekyll & Mr. Hyde" (1931) and another for "The Best Years of Our Lives" (1946). While he won the Silver Bear Best Acting Award for "Inherit the Wind" from the Berlin International Film Festival, this was not among his 5 Oscar nominations. His tirades are so over-the-top that he seems almost to act in a different universe from Spencer Tracy's more modern realism.
Stanley Kramer used bravado to assemble his cast. He told Tracy that he had Frederick March & Gene Kelly signed to the picture, then approached Kelly saying he had Tracy & March signed. Eventually, all did come on board, but it was major salesmanship on Kramer's part that assembled the cast. Kramer had three Oscar nominations as Best Director for "The Defiant Ones" (1958), "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961) & "Guess Who's Coming to Dinner" (1967), but never won other than an honorary award. Pickets went up at movie theatres protesting the "anti-religious" slant of this picture. Kramer's known liberal platform rings loud & clear in this film, made in the year that John F. Kennedy was elected president.
Spencer Tracy will be remembered as one of film's best actors from its first century as a medium. He had an amazing pair of back-to-back awards for Best Actor Oscars for "Captain's Courageous" (1937) & "Boys Town" (1938). "Inherit the Wind" was among his 9 Oscar nominations, although Burt Lancaster won that year for "Elmer Gantry." Based on Clarence Darrow, Tracy plays Henry Drummond as a cantankerous geezer, but with enough reserve to make the riveting moments real zingers. March, on the other hand, gets on a high note and seems to stay there, making him seem -- as Kramer probably intended -- like a buffoon.
Dick York will be remembered as Darren Stevens on the "Bewitched" TV series. He had been in "My Sister Eileen" and had even sustained a back injury while shooting "They Came to Cordura" in 1959 that would eventually cause him to leave the "Bewitched" series. "Inherit the Wind" is probably his most memorable dramatic role. John Scopes has been changed to Bertram Cates. York's youthful looks seem the right fit for a teacher promoting Darwin's theory of evolution. York would pass away from emphysema 32 years later; but this is probably his best work on film.
Donna Anderson plays Bertram's fiancee. She'd been in Kramer's previous film "On the Beach" (1959) about survivors of a nuclear holocaust. This was the 2nd of the 5 films she would make. She seems pretty confused about the issue of evolution, but love firmly persuades her to stand by her man.
Other performances that shine are Henry Morgan that we also know from the TV shows "M.A.S.H." & "Dragnet." Florence Eldridge, who in real life was Mrs. Frederick March, plays his wife here while having very sympathetic eyes for Spencer Tracy. Claude Aikens plays the staunch Rev. Jeremiah Brown. And TV's "3's Company" regular Norman Fell has a cameo as a radio announcer. The film did not win any Oscars, although it was nominated for Best Editing & Best Adapted Screenplay.
The issues in the film are still relevant today. I didn't particularly find the film "anti-religious" as much as it seemed opposed to fanaticism & intolerance. Science plays a vital role in debunking religion of much of its superstition, but it does not negate the existence of God as Creator. Evolution could be as well interpreted as part of the Divine Technique rather than in opposition to religion. The performances in the film drew me into the picture. I found it entertaining as it nears 50 years since it was made. Enjoy!
Inherit the Wind (1960) 47+ years and still relevent!!!.......2007-03-16
This is a movie about the dispute between creationism and evolution and the legal ramifications of this moral delima (teaching evolution in a town that make evangelicals look like hippies). Look for Spencer Tracy (Drummond), Frederick March (Brady), Harry Morgan as the Judge, and Gene Kelly in a rare dramatic role as a trial reporter! Also for an interesting side note, this was the first in-flight movie EVER!!! Based on a play.
Is NOT "all glitter and glamour but no substance".......2007-03-08
This is a 1960's marvel. The screen writers, actors and actresses alike do a phenomenal job making the Tennessee vs. John Scopes trial come to life. The movie has arguably more depth and reach than perhaps the actual court case had. Issues of Evolution and Creationism (while still present) take a back seat as Spencer Tracy (Counselor Drummond) argues for man's progress and right to think while not completely rejecting spirituality.
This movie will never be in danger of becoming irrelevant as it confronts issues of fanaticism, ignorance, bigotry, and group-think. In my opinion it's the best version of the story out there, play, movie re-make or otherwise. It's one of my all time favorites.

A good movie with lots of known players. Good clean fun. Brings back the good old days. Enjoyable.
Great movie for the dectective at heart.......2007-05-15
Dick Tracy is an action packed classic detective story. The movie features loads of bad guys that each has a unique visual presence throughout the movie. Warren Beatty gives a realistic and believable performance as Dick Tracy himself. For those looking for some nostalgic Madonna action, look no further. She's stylish and sexy in those black outfits she wears.
If you're looking for a fun night at the movies, this is a winner!
Dick Tracy.......2007-05-13
Excellent film! Excellent soundtrack! Seen it time and time again.
Why Marvell Cariaga is listed as the main star, I have no idea. Warren Beatty is the main character.
a good film bad judgement.......2007-02-25
why is itevery time beatty enters the picture with a film hes gotta louse it up by acting in it i know he like to look at himself in the mirror but so dose every other director look at george lucas for example and you dont see him screwing all his films up well not all his films any way take this picture for instantce it could do without the love story and stick to the point of the plot getting caprice this is why sin city was great it stuck to the point second nobody cares for madonna somebody else that could have stayed out of this film ive read dick tracy its no brodway comic strip or disney for that matter frank miller should have taken over the screenplay and did it justice.hopefully somebody else will remake this film but with beatty fighting to ruin the strip yet again in court that wont be happening anytime soon.
Film/Comic Book Noir at its Best.......2007-01-28
With great performances from Al Pacino to Dustin Hoffman, music by Sondheim and Danny Elfman, and beautiful colors and costumes, this is a truly unique and highly enjoyable movie each time you watch it.

Though it emerged during the Reagan era, Family Ties remains as relevant as ever. Most children find their parents a little embarrassing, but what sets this sitcom apart is that former hippies Steven (Michael Gross) and Elyse (Meredith Baxter-Birney) Keaton have three children, Alex (three-time Emmy winner Michael J. Fox), Mallory (Justine Bateman), and Jennifer (Tina Yothers), yet they haven't lost their youthful idealism. The ambitious Alex and materialistic Mallory, however, don't share it. Poster children for the go-go 1980s, they'd rather rake in the cash than change the world. As Alex quips in the pilot, "The '60s are over, Dad." If the writing were more cynical, it's unlikely the ABC show would've become a seven-season hit. It works because the Keatons obviously love each other--foibles and all.
In their first year, the family faces a variety of challenges. Steven finds out his father has a fatal illness ("I Never Killed for My Father"), 15-year-old Mallory deals with unwelcome male attention ("Give Your Uncle a Kiss"), and 17-year-old Alex learns a lesson about responsibility when he loses nine-year-old Jennifer while babysitting ("The Fifth Wheel"). Guest stars include Bewitched's Dick Sargent as Elyse's father, Charlie ("No Nukes Is Good Nukes"), and a lanky Tom Hanks as her brother, Ned (two-part episode "The Fugitive"). Though Fox (Back to the Future, Spin City) was the breakout star of Family Ties, he was part of a strong ensemble. Some storylines are also surprisingly hard-hitting, particularly the script dealing with sexual harassment. On the downside, there are no extras and, like many Paramount boxed sets, most of the original music has been changed or eliminated. The theme song "Without Us," for instance, is sung by session players on several episodes rather than by Johnny Mathis and Deniece Williams. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Una espera que valió la pena tener, sin embargo, falta alguna referencia de los protagonistas algo así como una edición especial.
Good show! So-so boxed set........2007-05-11
We really enjoyed the show, and it was nice to finally be able to watch some of the old favorites that my husband and I grew up with. The boxed set was a bit disappointing, but liveable.
The one thing I absolutely cannot STAND, though, is the abuse of the "Anti-Piracy" message slot. On this DVD, it is filled with many, MANY commercials, and you can't skip past them. For that reason, I won't be buying any more of these.
Michael is so adorkable!.......2007-05-09
I have always been a really big Michael J. Fox fan. Since being a teenager now, I was not able to see that show when it was aired on TV, but when I got the DVD set, I watched all the episodes five times in a row. That now became my new favorite show. I can't wait until the second season comes out!
love the show, the dvd? not so much.......2007-05-05
i of course love family ties. it was great in the 80s and continues to make me laugh 20 some years later but when i spend money on a dvd set, i want the complete set and i expect special features. where are they? doesn't the cast have anything to say about filming the show? i taped a documentary on pbs called "inside family ties" that was narrated by henry winkler and it highlighted the making of the sixth season opener. i hope the documentary makes it on to season 6 and that by then, the company that owns the rights to this show realizes that half the reason people buy dvds is to watch behind the scenes footage. the set is a must have if you love the show but not if you want to see what went in to making it.
Alex P. Keaton: Greatest sitcom character ever.......2007-03-31
The premise of Family Ties is relatively simple. A pair of activists from the 60s with decidedly liberal views find themselves raising a family in the 80s with kids who are very 1980s-minded.
Yet from this simple premise was born a great television show, one that dealt with many very serious issues, but one that found comedy in all sorts of situations. Watching this much-anticipated first season release, one will find themselves laughing at the situations that the characters find themselves in, even 25 years later.
Steven and Elyse Keaton (Michael Gross and Meredith Baxter Birney) were anti-war demonstrators in the 60s, but in the 1980s things are a little different. The couple is raising three children, 17-year-old Alex (Michael J. Fox in his career-defining role), 15-year-old Mallory (Justine Bateman) and 10-year-old Jennifer (Tina Yothers). As parents they want to be sure they are raising the kids right, but they are also hoping to avoid the traps that they believe their parents fell into when raising them.
The relationship between the parents and kids, as well as the relationship between the kids, is the hallmark of this show and none of those relationships are as entertaining as the one between Alex and his parents. Alex is a hard-core Republican conservative, worshiping at the altar of Nixon and Reagan, all the while keeping track of investments and any way he can make money. His views are obviously completely opposite of his parents and this leads to a number of hilarious encounters. Fox really brought a lot to this role and when he was cast, he was basically an unknown. This part put his career on the fast track, leading to his eventual role as Marty McFly in the Back to the Future trilogy. I remember watching this show as a kid and really enjoying the character, but watching it now with a better understanding of the political views and such, it is even funnier.
Mallory is the typical teenage girl, completely infatuated with boys, but not so much with school. While her brother shines in the academic world, she struggles in his shadow, instead electing to focus on fashion and such. But she is also a good friend and a good sister, as she helps one of her friends through a teenage pregnancy in one of her stronger storylines of the first season. She also deals with the flirtations of an old family friend. Thankfully, though the subjects were serious, the show was always able to find comedy in serious matters.
Jennifer is the perfect example of a tomboy, into sports and hanging out with boys, which gets her in trouble with some of her classmates, as they are at the age where boys and girls begin to separate. As the youngest member of the Keaton clan, Jennifer often feels overlooked, but she is always quick to put in a good punch line and play the role of precocious kid when it is needed. Often times she even comes out looking more mature than her older siblings.
In this first season, Tom Hanks makes a guest appearance as Elyse's brother, who is on the run from the authorities after stealing a large amount of money from his company. It was interesting to see Hanks at such a young age, as many in my generation know him mainly for his most recent movies.
The only disappointing thing about this set was the lack of extras, but that was expected. I am hopeful for more seasons of this fantastic show to be released, though it would be nice if they were able to put together a few extras along the way.
All in all, though, this show transferred well to DVD. It was obvious that the show was shot in the early 80s, but there were no visual side effects and everything appeared pretty clear. This is a great family comedy, one that can be enjoyed by all ages, but will surely be enjoyed by someone who grew up in the 1980s and knows the time period.

Originally broadcast in 1994, the second season of NYPD Blue was disrupted by the departure of star David Caruso (Detective John Kelly) after just four episodes, under apparently less than amicable circumstances. He was ably replaced as Detective Sipowicz's partner by Jimmy Smits as the smoother Detective Bobby Simone, and the series managed not to miss a beat.
More streamlined and downbeat than its predecessor, Hill Street Blues (also created by Steven Bochco), NYPD Blue continued second time around to mix near-the-knuckle detective work to foil New York's scummiest with more character- and relationship-based drama. Although it's regrettable that its ethnic minority characters, such as Lieutenant Fancy, are increasingly marginalized here, the series is more comfortable--and even has fun--with regular characters such as the nervy Detective Medavoy and his on-off paramour Donna Abandando. Andy Sipowicz's simmering, tough-nosed recovering alcoholic is increasingly and amusingly put to the test in a number of situations, including: a murder investigation in a gay bar; being sung to at his own wedding by Nic Turturro's Detective Martinez; and a love scene in the shower in which we experience the dubious pleasure of seeing his bare rear.
New female introductions, such as the strong but sympathetic Detective Lesniak, also helped to shake up the series with a much-needed estrogen boost. There's also fun to be had in spotting a number of guest appearances by up-and-coming actors destined to make it in their own right such as Richard Schiff and Bradley Whitford (The West Wing) and Debra Messing (Will & Grace).
The DVD set contains a number of extras, primarily a one-hour documentary in which the cast and crew discuss the series episode by episode, the self-congratulatory mood broken only by some subtle digs at departing star David Caruso (apparently, he walked straight off the set following his final take into a waiting limo without any farewells). There's also a small piece paying tribute to the music of theme-writer Mike Post and an item covering the relationship between Sipowicz and Assistant DA Sylvia Costas, in whose marriage this series culminates. --David Stubbs

From drama to soap opera.......2007-03-23
By seeing the shows back-to-back, the minor characters seem to fit the continuing story more than could be caught in weekly episodes. What appeared to be side bar stories during the weekly exposure, have become a master story where sub-plots run throughout the season and tie together beautifully. If you liked the network run, you'll love the DVD's.
best police drama ever.......2007-03-02
I think NYPD Blue is the best writen, acted and directed police drama ever and I wanted to share it with my Husband who did not have the opportunity to watch the show when it was first on the air.
Having the DVD's makes it possible to finally see the shows I missed.
Blue Review - Season 2.......2007-01-19
Awesome!!! I can't wait to get more NYPD Blue. I really enjoyed the show while it was on TV. It is good to watch it on DVD's, also. I definately would recommend it for all to watch.
Great Series.......2006-11-10
This is the second season of NYPD BLUE in which they change main characters, from John Kelley played by David Caruso, to Bobby Simone played by Jimmy Smits. The show is very well written and directed, the cinematography is also excellent. The acting I believe is superb; their cast is great. It's also really nice not to have the annoying commercials. That being said, however this is a show for adults.
NYPD Blue.......2006-06-13
In my mind the best drama ever on Network TV. Got a chance to meet Dennis Franz in the Portland OR airport June 2006. A real nice guy who took the time to talk.

Within the first few minutes of the pilot episode, it's clear what made NYPD Blue stand out from the rest of the cop show pack, as the characters express themselves in startlingly colorful language. This, combined with glimpses of nudity, earned NYPD Blue the reputation as R-rated television--but just about every episode demonstrates the propulsive storytelling and superb ensemble acting that put substance behind the flash. The show revolves around two detectives: Tough, moralistic, but passionate John Kelly (David Caruso) and hair-trigger Andy Sipowicz (Dennis Franz), who wrestles with booze and racist tendencies. Caruso rose to prominence as the star, but his intensity bleeds too easily into preening self-righteousness; it's Franz, with a much more complex role, who really drives the show.
NYPD Blue's writers skillfully navigate both single-episode criminal cases (ranging from tense procedural sequences like Kelly slowly drawing a confession out of a man who killed a cab driver, to lighter cases like a stolen Oscar statuette) and storylines that stretch dizzily across the entire season. These sustained plots are the real meat of the show: Kelly's hardline ethics are humanized by watching him clumsily come to a professional relationship with his ex-wife Laura (Sherry Stringfield) and work through an affair with Officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman), who is herself entangled with mobsters; while Sipowicz's near-death in the pilot has repercussions that crop up throughout the series, threatening his sobriety and his developing relationship with a lawyer (Sharon Lawrence)--and then there's his tense relationship with African American Lt. Fancy (James McDaniel), which affords some trenchant looks at racism inside and outside the department. The writing, directing, and acting only gets more subtle and complex as the show goes on, making this set a must for any fan. --Bret Fetzer

Saludos y animo.
Now I understand why David Caruso thought he could be a major star........2007-05-01
I had never seen any of the early NYPD Blues episodes with David Caruso until now. In fact I never wanted to see them because I had never found Caruso to be an attractive or particularly talented actor and wondered why he had the conceit to leave NYPD Blue so early in his career. After watching his charismatic and convincing performance as John Kelly I now understand. This whole first season of this groundbreaking show somehow made me wistful for a time gone by.
NYPD Blue, Season 1.......2007-02-22
Enjoyed all of it. Was able to see some episodes that I had missed when the show first started. Since watching Season 1, I have ordered and received Season 2, 3, and 4. Can't wait to watch them.
First season was the best and the most unique .......2006-11-05
Although it seems tame compared to the show's currently on television (most notably "The Shield"), "NYPD Blue" was groundbreaking back when it premiered in 1993. It was one of the first television shows to truly push the envelope, featuring nudity, violence, and language that you thought you'd never hear on network television at the time. So much so, that it wasn't even broadcast on the ABC affiliate in Dallas during that first season.
The first season contains some quality television moments. I found the pilot disappointing - it's dull prime time fare meant primarily to shock the viewer. However, the second episode will draw you in. Sipowicz, after being shot by a mobster, lies in the hospital while his partner, Detective John Kelly (David Caruso) and other precinct characters, seek revenge. The internal affairs stuff becomes more relevant, as does Sipowicz's nasty drinking habit, his disastrous personal life and his racist tendencies. Kelly is more of a kinder cop, standing behind his partner even with his bad habits, and Caruso plays it with such debonair coolness in contrast to Franz's gruff Sipowicz that he attracted movie offers quickly and left after the first four episodes of the second season. Unfortunately, people remember more about how Caruso's career went downhill after he left the show than just how good he was at playing Kelly.
Remember that besides the shock value, season one of NYPD Blue is depicting a pre-Giuliani New York City - one in which people carry spare watches and extra cash so that when they inevitably get mugged they have something to give the robber and don't get pistol whipped. This inevitable sense of victimhood is personified in "4B" (David Schwimmer), a guy who is mugged in the laundry room of his own apartment building, starts carrying a gun, and is eventually killed while trying to defend himself against a subsequent attack. There's also the budding "Beauty and the Beast" romance between Sipowicz and ADA Sylvia Costas which begins Sipowicz' transformation into a good and admirable person. Then there is the season-long epic of officer Janice Licalsi (Amy Brenneman) who kills a mobster who in turn wanted her to kill John Kelly and was threatening to reveal her late father's corrupt past as a police officer as leverage. Licalsi has apparently gotten away with a crime that seems somewhat justifiable, but her conscience just won't let the deed rest.
Overall, I would say that this was one of the better seasons of NYPD Blue. The characters were much more interesting than they were in later seasons and the stories were pretty good, although I was somewhat bored by the internal affairs material. The season holds up over time, but the shock value really doesn't, and in some cases actually does damage to character development. For example, there is really no reason for that last scene of the last episode of the season between John Kelly and Robin, the widow of John's rich friend who has recently died of cancer. In fact, subtract the shock value, and it makes Kelly look like a real jerk - Licalsi is facing prison for saving John's life and his first act after her confession and arrest is to be with another woman? In spite of it all, I would still recommend the DVD set since this first season really is very unique among the twelve season run and is a must for any true fan of the show.
Blue.......2006-10-30
I had forgotten how good NYPD BLUE was, this is a most for a true fan, everyone looked so different in the beginning, I plan to purchase the rest of the season, this is a classic.

Michael Caine was robbed of an Oscar. He gives his finest performance in a decade as big-talking small-time agent Ray Say, a paunchy, pale life of the party hiding his desperation under gold chains and cool bravura. When he hears the almost magical voice of Jane Horrocks's meek little LV (short for Little Voice) fill her bedroom with the rich voice of Judy Garland, he sees his ticket to the big time. Little Voice is ostensibly LV's story, and in fact the original play was written for Horrocks, whose amazing vocal impressions of Garland, Shirley Bassey, and Marilyn Monroe (among others) form the centerpiece performance of the film. But as directed by Mark Herman (Brassed Off), the story of this mousy girl who shuts herself in from a bellowing world is just as overwhelmed by the bombastic characters as LV herself. Brenda Blethyn babbles a blue streak as LV's overbearing mother, Mari, an aging widow who escapes her unhappiness in carousing and becomes almost pathologically jealous when Ray's attentions turn from her to LV. As Ray puts his dreams on the line for LV's showcase, he reveals his true self: a venal man who spits and barks out his bottled-up anger in an astoundingly bile-filled delivery of Roy Orbison's "It's Over." The showstopping moment once again overwhelms LV's tale, but Caine's performance is so astounding it seems a fair trade. --Sean Axmaker
Description
World-class stars Michael Caine (HANNAH AND HER SISTERS), Brenda Blethyn (SECRETS AND LIES), and Ewan McGregor (STAR WARS: EPISODE I, BLACK HAWK DOWN) deliver acclaimed performances in an inspirational story about a painfully shy young woman and how the power of music leads her to an amazing transformation! A hopeless introvert, "Little Voice," (Jane Horrocks, TV's ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS) can only manage to express herself by singing in the timeless voices of Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and others. But once her eccentric mother's (Blethyn) new boyfriend -- a sleazy talent scout (Caine) overhears Little Voice's incredible crooning, he'll do anything to drag the recluse into the spotlight and make her a star! Cheered by critics everywhere -- don't miss your chance to enjoy this truly exceptional motion picture!
Customer Reviews:
Real Little.......2007-02-02
Annoying people doing annoying little desperate things is this one. A little light hearted, but mostly the villian, Michael Caine, a talent agent of little worth, makes Little Voice a local star for a little while, till she breaks away from her loudmouth mummy and has a little romance. I watched this with three people and one fell asleep by the little ending.
A Must Have in Any DVD Collection.......2007-01-12
Jane Horrocks gives an incomprable performance and gives most of us a glimpes of her amazing vocal and acting tallents
Gigantic talent.......2007-01-10
4.5 stars, rounded up to 5.
Jane Horrocks, who played numerous characters in the cult English sitcom "Absolutely Fabulous", shines here as a sorrowfully shy girl with a talent beyond belief.
After her father died, many years ago, she resigned herself to listening to his old records, and singing along with them. She soon became a virtuoso, capable of imitating Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, and others. In equally brilliant performances, Michael Caine and Brenda Blethyn (Pride and Prejudice) the former wants to bring LV's talent to the world, certain that great riches are but a step away. Brenda (LV's mom) is at first completely oblivious to her daughters talent, as she is far too egocentric to notice anything or anyone but herself - unless it's a man. In that case, she's quite the player.
There is a somewhat interesting - although perhaps unnecessary - love interest between LV and Billy (Ewan McGregor). It seems to serve as helping LV to open up to the world, but there are so many things/occurrences that can happen to a person that incite change that I'm a little fed up with movies taking the easy way out with a love interest. AND, there was such an occurrence in the film itself. Still, Ewan plays his part well, and while his interest in LV is a bit difficult to understand, it's not entirely unbelievable.
What IS unbelievable is Jane Horrocks's amazing voice. You'd think that the filmmakers would have her lip synch while either a recording of Judy Garland, or someone who could imitate her, was singing. But they didn't need to do so. Horrocks did so herself. She imitated all of the artist's brilliantly, and nearly perfectly.
It was easy to see, after this performance, what a remarkably gifted actress she is. The characters she played on "AbFab" were hysterical and widely variant, though she is best known as the mentally challenged Bubble.
An Undiscovered Gem.......2007-01-04
There's never been a film quite like this. Brenda Blethyn is at her boozy best as the screaming mother of "Little Voice." Ewan McGregor delivers a very subtle, warm performance as a guy who finds comfort only with his homing pigeons until he meets "Little Voice." Michael Caine plays the loud jerk so well, but you still feel for his character as the agent searching for the career making client. Jane Horrocks is a wonder as "Little Voice", the girl who barely whispers, but who comes alive belting out tunes made famous by Judy Garland, Marilyn Monroe, Shirley Bassey and others. Viewers should know that Horrocks does all her own singing, she's not lip synching. They note this at the end of the film, but I think viewers will be astounded knowing it as they watch her amazing renditions.
you won't believe the music, incredible.......2006-11-04
This little gem of movie often gets overlooked by Americans. The star is the same woman who plays the ditzy secretary, Bubble, on AB FAB. Her voice is so incredible at first I did not believe it was "Bubble" doing the singing. Great story, don't miss this one.

Wonderful Movie but DVD is DREADFUL! Don't Buy this!.......2007-04-28
How to ruin a perfectly marvelous movie? Make a poor quality DVD. The picture is so washed out most details are lost and the sound so low I had to turn up the volume to 99 just to hear it whisper. THIS DVD IS VERY BAD! Please just record this gem the next time it comes on TCM and save your money. It is a shame such a wonderful film has been treated in such a poor manner.
Disappointed.......2007-04-14
The first time I saw this movie, it was on TV. I remembered enjoying it very much. This led to my purchasing the DVD. I was, however, very disappointed in the DVD. The quality of the recording was so bad I gave up half way through the movie. The picture quality was poor and the sound was even worse. It was difficult to understand the dialogue. I am sorry to report this. I was hoping for so much more.
A sequel that retains the freshness of the original..........2006-12-31
Detailing the life of the newlyweds (does he really love her?) and the traumas attendant upon the birth of the first baby, "Father's Little Dividend" is a movie as cozy and as dependent on little shocks of recognition as its predecessor, "Father of the Bride." Guided with the Minnelli grace, the movie is that rare thing--a sequel that retains the freshness of the original...
These two movies are something of a curiosity in Taylor's career... It wasn't too often that Liz got the chance to play a completely average young lady, the charming girl next door rather than the rich and unattainable beauty...
In "Cynthia" or "A Date with Judy," she was someone set apart from the prom crowd... Here, as bride-to-be or as eager wife and mother, she's a healthy, normal young woman, something of a forerunner to Elinor Donahue's bright, bubbly Betty of "Father Knows Best."
Once again, Spencer Tracy stole the picture as he came to face the fact of grandfatherhood...
Extremely Poor Quality DVD.......2006-12-10
I love this movie. I have the VHS version and wanted it on DVD. However, I will be keeping my VHS. This copy is dreadful. It is unviewable. I will never buy from Alpha Video again.

Dick Tracy cartoon series.......2007-01-04
Excellent packaging and condition of prints. (Would have liked to have the episodes listed in a booklet, as there were 130, and the only way to know what was where was put each disk in and go through tedious rounds of menues).
However, I was very pleased to see all the episodes intact, including full begin themes, (unlike the disappointing releases of Batfink without its begin song).
Well worth buying for fans of Dick Tracy. See all the famous villains, and the rotating cast of Tracy's support characters: GoGo Gomez, Hemlock Holmes, Jo Jitsu, Heap O'Callory etc.
Great stuff
Too Long Ago.......2006-11-03
This was a nostalgia buy ~ I remember loving these as a kid, and when I read details about the product I would not have appreciated back then ~ such as Everett Sloan was the voice of Tracy ~ I had to get it. Fortunately I found a "fell off the truck" copy on eBay for less than half price, because upon playing the first disc I realized that these are pretty much for kids only. Aside from a few adult references (such as using a Peter Lorre-like voice for Flattop) these are not very clever, and definitely do not hold up as adult entertainment by any stretch of the imagination. I guess I was fooled by my own enjoyment of many great reprints of the original Tracy strip (which I see is now coming out in new editions ~ look elsewhere on Amazon) but after 3 of these cartoons I knew I was going to be trading this one in at Coconuts. Better stick to Volume 4 of Looney Tunes, which appears to have quite a few ESSENTIAL Bugs Bunny features this time.
Another blast of the past!.......2006-10-14
I remember a long time ago when my mom rented these cartoons on video for me back in the early 1990s. These cartoons have been in my mind for a very long time. Now that they are on dvd it,s a great blast of the past. All the cartoons are entertaining and funny too. Even though I don,t see the crimestopper tips the cartoons are still good as can be.
Wow, we kids were sure easy to please!.......2006-10-12
When I saw this DVD set, I just had to pick it up for nostalgia sake. One reviewer was a bit harsh but admitted that they did not see the show when originally aired in the 60's. What's the saying? Sometimes you "just had to be there" in order to find appeal in DVD releases of old TV shows such as this. As is often the case it is far more about simple nostalgia and fond recollections than perceived quality.
As a kid in the 60's, the "Dick Tracy Show" was a favorite and after popping in the first disc and seeing that high overhead street scene with the traffic parting and that music...a flood of memories came back. Of course looking at it now with my adult eye it was pretty cheesy stuff. I had totally forgotten that Dick Tracy doesn't really do anything other than hand off the assignments in the opening scene and check in at the end. I wonder why? Is it that Tracy was drawn too seriously and wasn't meant to be funny and therefore let his cartoon-like "crime-busting pals" take over? Funny, as an adult, and why I would even notice such things, I found myself picking up mistakes, errors or things that don't make sense. Geez, it's a cartoon, but I noticed that there is no nameplate on Tracy's desk when facing him but with the angle from behind it suddenly appears...and the nameplate is facing him! Things like this only add to the appeal. OK, this is sad. What's next? I'm going to notice Deputy Dog and Yogi Bear don't have pants on...or the fact that they talk?
Anyway, though I am not sure I can sit through all 130 episodes, it is a hoot to catch up with ol' Mumbles, Flattop and Pruneface as well as GoGo Gomez, Joe Jitsu and of course, Heap O'Callory! Get it? A rather plump cop named "Heap O'Callory". It went over my head as a kid and I just made the connection watching it as an adult.
Good fun if you grew up watching this show or if you have young kids in the house. For me, since the entire series is on one attractively priced DVD set, it was an easy choice.
I applaud the release...........2006-10-07
It is GREAT to have these and I love the original cartoons un-edited and uncut! It appears that CLASSIC MEDIA made a small goof though. The back cover says it includes Tracy's CRIME STOPPER TIPS (The short inbetween segments from the original show) BUT unless they are a REALLY well hidden EASTER EGG, I haven't been able to find them. Other than that, I am glad this set was released Un-Censored!
