Fans of author Louis Sachar's book Holes will be delighted with this scrupulously faithful adaptation. After being wrongly found guilty of stealing a pair of sneakers, Stanley Yelnats (Shia LaBeouf) gets sent to Camp Green Lake, a juvenile correctional facility in the bed of a long-gone dry Texas lake. There--under the watchful eye of overseer Mr. Sir (a zesty Jon Voight), sneakily mean therapist Dr. Pendanski (Tim Blake Nelson, O Brother Where Art Thou?), and the cool and cruel Warden (Sigourney Weaver)--Stanley and dozens of other delinquents are forced to dig an endless series of holes that the Warden hopes will lead her to a precious secret left behind by a long-dead female outlaw (Patricia Arquette). Sachar's book is beloved for its vivid characters and suspenseful plot; by sticking close to its source, Holes has become a dynamic, exciting, and surprisingly touching movie. --Bret Fetzer
Description
The award-winning bestseller comes to life in this phenomenally fun, adventure-filled movie starring Emmy Award-winner Shia LaBeouf (Outstanding Performer In A Children's Series, Disney Channel's EVEN STEVENS, 2000). Dogged by bad luck stemming from an ancient family curse, young Stanley Yelnats (LaBeouf) is sent to Camp Green Lake, a very weird place that's not green and doesn't have a lake. Once there, he's thrown headlong into the adventure of his life when he and his colorful campmates -- Squid, Armpit, Zigzag, Magnet, X-Ray, and Zero -- must dig a hole a day to keep the warden at bay. But why? Through it all, Stanley and company must forge fast friendships as they try to unearth the mystery of what's really going on in the middle of nowhere. Filled with humor and heartwarming messages of friendship and teamwork, HOLES is a treasure everyone will dig.

Holes.......2007-06-12
A pair of shoes fall from the sky and hit Stanley Yelnats in the head. Turns out; they were extremely valuable, donated to a homeless children facility by a famous baseball player. The police show up and arrest him, turns out that the shoes were stolen. A judge gives him the choice of Camp Green Lake or jail. Stanley thought that Camp Green Lake sounded like fun. But when he got there, he had the worst time of his life. He finds out that there is no lake and there hasn't been rain for over 100 years. He makes friends along the way and figures out that the warden is up to no good. Stanley helps spoil her plot.
The director, Andrew Davis, did a great job following the book. This film was based on the book "Holes" by Louis Sacher. Louis Sacher also did the screenplay for the movie.
I thought the movie was awesome. It had a great plot. There were many twists and turns in the story that came together at the end. The use of flashbacks made it fun to watch!
I would recommend this movie to any family. Families will want to watch it over and over again.
great family movie.......2007-05-21
my daughter loves this movie she has watched it several times since I got it for her. I watched it with her as well. It is great everyone with kids should get this movie and watch it with their children.
Doesn't Quite Fit the Novel's Hole, But Still Good.......2007-04-29
If you dig out a chunk from gold bullion, all you will get is still gold. So that's what this movie is: a gold nugget--albeit necessarily smaller than the timeless novel of Louis Sachar, who wrote the screenplay, too.
Casting is well made, and Jon Voight reminded me why he's a great actor. Kid-actors were good and a few of them stood out as possible great actors of the near future.
Most exceptional performance comes from Patricia Arquette. Although her role was smaller in time than most others, her character had the most discernable character transformation in the movie; not just that she goes from being a teacher to bandit, but her facial expressions and demeanor are interesting to watch.
In the novel, Stanley goes through a physical metamorphosis along with the positive change in his self-esteem. But as they mention in the DVD extras, this was "too difficult" to ask of a teen-ager to do. I agree. Yet better acting/directing could have made the young Stanley character's emotional phase shift more remarkable to see. A novelist in this area has tremendous advantage over a movie because the reader can "experience" what a character's going through in more subtle ways than the motion pictures medium can allow, easily.
Near Perfect Adaptation of Great Book.......2007-02-20
The movie version of HOLES is wonderful and very close to the popular and well written book for children/young adults. This is not surprising since Louis Sachar who wrote the novel also wrote the screenplay. The movie is well cast except Shea Labeuf does not look much like the Stanley described in the book as the novel's Stanley has a weight problem at the book's start while Labeuf is always about normal size. There are a couple of flashbacks in the book but they are handled without confusion to any viewer who is paying attention or is over age seven. And like in the book all the plot lines are tied up very neatly by the end.
Fantastic!.......2007-02-02
I'll never appreciate any other movie this much again. The characters and the plot were done like no other movie. Louis Sachar's also popular book was re-lived in a way that could never be redone. This is one movie that everyone should own. Defineitely the coolest way to spend two hours.

Description
Based on advances in technology created by Nikola Tesla over a century ago, HAARP - High Frequency Active Auroral Research Project - is a controversial high frequency radio transmitter operated by the US military which beams high level energy into the Earth's upper atmosphere.
Ostensibly for ionospheric research, HAARP can also be used to locate hidden oil reserves and missile silos around the world. However, critics of HAARP say it could blow a massive hole in the upper atmosphere as well as disrupt the subtle magnetic energies of all life on Earth.
Join Martin Sheen (The West Wing) in an investigation of a subject that could have a dramatic effect on us all.

This was a well done documentary, and a good production. I'd recommend this as a "buy" to everybody to educate themselves on just what the potential situation is with this experiment. H.A.A.R.P. will no doubt have a very significant impact on everybody's future.
The Best Film on this subject to date.......2006-11-13
As the author of two books dealing with HAARP ("WEATHER WARFARE: The Military's Plan To Draft Mother Nature," and "HAARP: The Ultimate Weapon of the Conspiracy") I can assure you that HOLES IN HEAVEN is no tin foil hat lunacy but the real deal. HAARP is very real and very dangerous, as this film makes abundantly clear.
HAARP is the largest and most powerful United States Department of Defense (DoD) facility of its kind in the world -- just what kind of facility it is, however, has been the subject of heated debate for many years.
Located in southeastern Alaska, HAARP is a field of antennas so constituted that it works as one giant antenna. Moreover, it is the world's largest radio broadcasting station, now with an effective radiated power of 3.6 million watts -- more than 72,000 times more powerful than the largest legal commercial radio station (50,000 watts) in the United States! But, HAARP's broadcasts are not intended for human ears. Its purpose is to inject all that radio frequency energy into a "spot" at the very top of the atmosphere, in a region called the ionosphere.
Why do they want to inject all that energy into the ionosphere? Doing so mimics the way the sun injects energy into the same region of the atmosphere. By artificially recreating natural phenomena they hope to better understand the processes and problems caused by solar flares and such and, more importantly, to control and create various ionospheric conditions, thus giving the DoD the ability to modify the atmosphere in furtherance of military objectives.
Some researchers think HAARP may be an over-the-horizon type radar ... or it may exist to destroy incoming ICBMs ... or perhaps to fry out the electronics of enemy spy satellites ... or it might be used to disrupt enemy radio communications. Researchers think it might be intended to do these things because those abilities are all described in the original 12 patents that the HAARP antenna array is based on. HOLES IN HEAVEN includes a lengthy interview with Dr. Bernard Eastlund, the leader of the team that wrote those patents and the holder of three of them (including the first that all the others are spin-offs from). The folks running HAARP deny any connection between HAARP and those patents, however. This, naturally, has opened them up to charges of cover-up and conspiracy.
Construction was announced to have been completed at HAARP in the spring of 2006, but it had been in use, at varying output strengths, since 1995. Even before HAARP began running its first tests researchers were looking into what this technology might be capable of. Several of the principal HAARP researchers, like Dr. Nick Begich, Jeane Manning and Patrick Flanagan are interviewed in this film.
I wrote "HAARP: The Ultimate Weapon of the Conspiracy" in 1998 with the intent to sort out truth from fiction in the many claims about what HAARP could or could not do. I first viewed HOLES IN HEAVEN after that book was released. I wish I had seen it sooner! Great stuff! With excellent visuals and important interviews, this film is a "must see" for anyone wanting to know more about HAARP or the military's interest in using the earth's natural systems as weapons or as "force multipliers."

Terrible quality, but I'm glad I bought it........2007-04-13
Dr. Dirty is a "must see Live" experience, but this will suffice for those of us that need a more regular fix of raunchy humor. The film is out of focus, the sound track is impossible to hear at times, and the subject matter is dated. It's almost perfect.
Disappointing.......2007-01-10
Die hard fans of John Valby will probably want this in their DVD collection - there don't seem to be many other live DVD's produced. The video and sound quality on this production suck! As previously mentioned it looks like it was filmed using a Micky Mouse Video Cam. The video quality is worse than VCD and the sound is terrible. Not recommended for anyone except those that absolutely have to have a keepsake remider of his shows.
Great.......2006-03-21
Saw him years ago in Erie, PA was the funniest concert I have ever been to. Glad I found this item.
Dr. Dirty, plain and simple........2003-12-16
I bought this dvd the last time I saw John Valby live, and was lucky enough to have it autographed. After one of the craziest nights of my life, filled with more laughs than ever, I was sure to pop this one in as soon as I got home.
I must first then caution you, that this DVD does not compare to seeing John live. In fact, none of his albums do. Though his show is simple, just good old Dr. Dirty and a piano, being a part of the crowd is a must. Why then, do you ask, would you buy this dvd?
Well, for starters, it's a great look inside of a Dr. Dirty show, and gives you a taste of John, and the crowds are there to see him. Sure, its poorly recorded, but who cares? It's Dr. Dirty. Plain and Simple.
If you've seen John live, then you'll love this dvd, as its filled with some of his best. If you haven't, then watch the dvd, study it, and start learning the words so you can participate when you go see him!
Cheap production, but glad to have JV on DVD!.......2003-11-04
Viewing this DVD was an exercise in frustration. 50% of the content was good classic Valby, but the other half filler. Furthermore, the DVD looks and sounds as if a cheap 300 dollar video cam was used to record the show. Audio is muffled a bit much of the time and not up to par on most of the DVD, and the video is a one camera presentation with no real closeups of John. OK, the camera is about 20 feet or so away, but it would have been a lot more professional if at least 2 cameras were used, and closer shots of John were included during some passages. That said, it is good to have JV on on DVD finally, and I am sure if John himself is reading the review he is saying 'FU' to me right now!

A real surprise........2002-09-29
This little treasure is something called "Les Gaspards" in French, which didn't have much of Depardieu (a minor role as a postman), but did have some other famous French actors (Michel Serrault and Philippe Noiret).
The best part of this film is that it was written by René Goscinny of Goscinny and Uderzo fame (authors of Asterix for those not in the know, with Goscinny being the author of that and many other comics). This is sort of a modern Asterix story, where parts of Paris disappear underground (see it to find out the details).
The only drawbacks are the poor transfer to DVD and dubbed dialogue. Given Goscinny's love of pun, I'd hate to think how much of this is being missed with the dubbed English dialogue(Goscinny's humour being more verbal than visual). This would be a superlative product if it were letterboxed and could have the original French dialogue with English subtitles. Still, it's an excellent little find for the price.
The Holes.......dubbed.......2001-01-23
The main reason for my purchase of this film was because I am a Gerard Depardieu fan. For my enjoyment, I am trying to amass as many of his films as possible. His part was not that large, nor does he use his own voice for the dubbing. So, if you are a fan, looking for movies with or starring Gerard, you may be a bit disappointed with this one.
The movie itself, I thought was quite funny, and made me wonder what might be going on, right here, beneath NYC. Would it really be possible to have a whole community living there without anyone knowing? If you enjoy foreign films and comedies, check this one out.
a cavalcade of great actors makes this one worth seeing.......2000-06-20
Scripted by rené gossiny (co-creator of astérix), this movie retains a cartoonish quality through it's storyline and situations. In short the story revolves around a secret society living in the vast Paris underground , having forsaken the surface dwellers. this new utopia is soon put in peril by a shopkeeper looking for his kidnapped daughter. The inevitable clash insues between the two societies with only possible result : hilarity ! Such an unlikely scenario might have worked without the massive injection of talent found in this picture: Michel Serrault, Philipe Noiret, Michel Galabru, Gérard Depardieu (in an early support role) and Jean Carmet make this a very enjoyable farce.

Misleading hype.......2006-05-15
Disc 1 - "They Are All Real" - is a tripe filled exercise in positing humans as the only agent for the creation of crop circles. All circles are the result of human activity. The "logic" goes like this: No other known entity exists capable of making a crop circle. It is a fact that some circles are made by humans. Ergo, humans make the crop circles.
"Researcher and author" Simeon Hein opines that the human agent seemed preposterous ("For the longest time I didn't actually think humans could make it...."), but after no doubt extensive investigations Dr. Hein determined that, lo and behold! human hoaxers were behind the phenomenon. But then, wait! he also says that crop circles are an "advanced form of technology" whose effects - such a as a measurable alternating current within the circle - cannot be explained. Which only leaves us with the mystery as to how humans can create electric fields with wood, rope and barley.
Then Dr. Hein shows a page in a book and notes that the circle makers "found the book" and recreated the patterns "intuitively." Circle making humans are thus expressing some "transcendent unknown." Yeech. This obfuscating phraseology is disingenuous at best, misleading at worse. Again, the "logic" seems to be: A crop circle appears, its pattern can be geometrically analyzed and reproduced, ergo, it is a human creation. In sum, according to Dr. Hein, "There is a blend of things. There is the natural phenomenon and there are people who are making the designs...." Natural phenomenon? What natural phenomenon accounts for fractal geometric patterns in crops? Which only goes to show that having a PhD does not necessarily imply superior intelligence.
One purpose of this documentary is to demonstrate that the "sons" of Doug and Dave are carrying on with "childish graffiti" in the fields. The other is simply to make one scratch one's head. To wit: "artist and researcher" Martin Keitel (the mastermind behind this documentary), posits that crop circles are created by human consciousnesses from the future transferred into balls of plasma that "travel into the past to make crop circles." Further, according to Mr. Keitel, in regard to a specific circle, "What should have happened was that these people [the plasma ball consciousnesses from the future] while they were making the crop circle during the night were taken to a parallel reality....and the crop circle was not visible, but then somehow revealed in the afternoon when nobody was watching." Got that? At last, the secret to how crop circles are made. My own feeling is that Mr. Keitel has read too much science fiction and should start wearing an aluminum foil hat to block the transmissions from other dimensions.
Disc 2 - "Conduit Closing" is a tad more interesting because it deals with the fractal geometry and "cosmic" significance of the patterns, not on who made them. But the weirdness doesn't go away. A group of meditators agree on a specific pattern. They visualize it for 20 minutes. Then, lo and behold! a crop circle reproducing their design shows up in a field a couple of days later. Amazing! Somehow, if you think about something it will become manifest in reality. [I'm thinking of a stack of thousand dollar bills.....] So crop circles happen because human will and consciousness, one may surmise, influences time traveling humans from the future appearing as balls of light that somehow unbeknownst to anyone make the patterns in crop.
The only interesting person in the entire two discs is Jay Goldner who has found in one specific formation (the alien face with adjacent circle of digital code) a basic geometric relationship to the slope of the Great Pyramid of Giza. Goldner also finds in crop circle formations "3D fractal hexagrams" that represent "an energy grid behind the physical universe...and the crop circles are using [or mimicking] these geometric structures on the physical level....They show us, in fact, the physical structure..." that underlies the structure of the cosmos. A knowledge known to the builders of the Pyramids and revealed in the designs of crop circles. ET phone home, dude.
