The good news is, one of John Wayne's least-known films has been restored to widescreen splendor. The bad news is, there's a reason Legend of the Lost has gone mostly unshown: it's a grievously misbegotten movie. Oh, the credits get you jumping: Wayne and international love goddess Sophia Loren under the direction of Henry Hathaway, with a Ben Hecht script and Technicolor camerawork by Jack (The Red Shoes) Cardiff. But Wayne is miscast as a raffish mercenary hired to guide French spiritualist Rossano Brazzi into the Sahara, where Brazzi's father disappeared searching for a lost city. And nothing sparks between the Duke and Loren, as a Timbuktu prostitute-pickpocket who joins the expedition because Brazzi speaks to her soul. There's little action, much turgid dialogue, and a jarring mix of Libyan locations with soundstage scenes shot back in Rome. Add a music score that sounds as if it belongs on a sci-fi film and you've got one bizarre movie. Still, Wayne completists should check it out, and Cardiff's cinematography is, as usual, ravishing. --Richard T. Jameson

2 out of 5 stars Legend of the Lost.......2007-01-11

Although I am a dedicated fan of John Wayne and dearly love his movies, I found this movie, which I have never seen before, to be slow and for lack of a better word boring. I will view it again and add it to my collection because John Wayne is in it.

5 out of 5 stars Great classic flick!.......2006-11-03

This film is very much in the genre of Strange Cargo, which I hope will be released on DVD as well. Both movies involve the self discovery of the main characters and the titanic struggle of good and evil.

4 out of 5 stars A Pretty Good Flic.......2005-03-22

I first saw this movie when I was 10 and was completely captivated. Of course, I've seen this movie on tv multiple times over the years and I never fail to fall under the movie's spell.

John Wayne as Joe January, drunken guide. Sophia Loren as Dita, a prostitute...do they ever look this good? Brazzi as a starry eyed treasure hunter and do-gooder. What a package. Henry Hathaway did a terrific job directing and Jack Cardiff does a terrific job with the photography.

Unlike other reviewers I think the soundtrack is perfectly aligned with the movie. The movie uses the desert as a fourth character. In the movie the desert is set up to be a strange and eerie place, especially the lost city they eventually end up in. Lost city, lost treasure, and finally a betrayl. The music supports this very well.

I give this movie pretty high marks. The story line is very credible. Brazzi's character shows up wanting to go into the desert to search for his father. Waynes character is hired. Before they can leave, Brazzi charms Sohia Loren's character and she manages to show up in the desert at Wayne's and Brazzi's first camp, escorted by desert nomads. Together the three travel the desert. They eventually end up out of water and stumble into a lost city, the real goal of Brazzi. Given some of the trite and predictable movies touted as good cinema today, even this movie makes them look pale.

Watch the movie for yourself. Unless you're one of those people that has to have a movie loaded with special effects, you should enjoy the experience.

4 out of 5 stars Strange movie invites unfairly harsh criticism.......2004-02-11

I had just seen Houseboat and really wanted to catch another Sophia flick. There is a criminal lack of her movies on DVD. With all the harsh criticisms of this movie, I bought it hesitantly only because I couldn't find many Sophia movies. There's a strange flavor to this movie, almost as if something about it was experimental. The story doesn't have a strong punch line by the end, but it does come to a logical conclusion that some may not find satisfying, but I did.

The best part of the movie were the good lines they gave John Wayne and the great comic timing with which he delivered them. In this movie he seems to have perfected the kind of character Harrison Ford played in the Star Wars and Indiana Jones series. While Sophia Loren is breathtakingly beautiful, with her talent and ability to project personality, she would still be fun to watch even if she was as plain as a blank sheet of paper. (Thank goodness she is gorgeous, though.)

Maybe what disappoints some people is that this movie appears to set itself up to be a wild action adventure, but instead this is more of a character development story before the time this kind of thing was popular in the late 1960's and early 1970's. It's a good movie to display some of the Duke's abilities to display the kind of character he often plays from a different perspective. And of course, Sophia is Sophia, bless her heart, and the packaging it comes in.

1 out of 5 stars Somebody fell asleep at the wheel.......2003-09-27

It is often fun to overly critize films made in other decades that often reflect a different attitude to what worked for audiences then. My memory of this film as a teenager stands up better than my views upon seeing this DVD resurrection. For instance, as soon as I saw the name Kurt Krasner in the credits this time, I recalled that it was a common practice to use certain actors over and over again, even though they were badly miscast each and every time. Mr. Krasner is cast as a French policeman in Timbuktu. The actor was often cast in exotic, foreign sounding roles. The problem was that, in Legend of the Lost, he never attempted a French accent. In fact, he never changed his accent or his delivery in any of his films. Ever! The fight scenes between Brazzi and Wayne (there are far too many of them) are amaturish; one camera angle actually shows Brazzi throwing a punch that misses Wayne's jaw by a good 12 inches! Where was the director, Henry Hathaway, a seasoned vertan, when this happened? The soundtrack element used for this DVD transfer was very poor; it has a thin, tin-like quality. I've heard better in the various TV versions of this film. I find that to be true of many DVD's. I'm glad I rented this DVD rather than simply relying on my memory and buying it outright. That saved me some hard-earned money.

5 out of 5 stars Lucy fans won't want to miss her Really Lost Moments.......2007-05-01

Any Lucy fan is already familiar with her extensive body of television work, but as this DVD reveals, there were just as many great Lucy moments happening elsewhere on TV. As one the first stars of the golden age of TV, Lucy, (and Desi), frequently appeared on comedy specials, game shows, and commercials, and the viewing audience still couldn't get enough of her. This DVD collects some of the best and rarest of these television moments, and presents them restored and in color for the first time.

The "main feature" of the DVD consists of over an hour of great moments. The first is a Bob Hope TV special that explores what would happen if Bob took over Desi's role on I Love Lucy. Vivian Vance, William Frawley and a mischevious seal all guest star. Seeing Bob react to Lucy's antics is a treat for any fan of early TV, and as a bonus, you get to see five minutes of his stand up as an intro to the special.

The main feature continues with a Westinghouse special, which takes us inside the walls of Desilu Studios. In between the funny back and forth between Lucy and Desis, Desi leads a helicopter tour of the studio, which provides a fascinating look at old Hollywood.

Lucy then appears on an episode of "I've Got a Secret" where she has fun and shows off her acting and comedic versatility in front of a panel that includes Johnny Carson. Finally, there is a lost TV pilot that Desi directed featuring Lucy as a first time airline passenger. One shouldn't need to be told that she manages to make a mess out of the entire situation, and it's good for some real laughs.

The entire Main Feature is presented in both black and white and in Color, and it looks great no matter how you choose to watch it. The quality of the material and of the presentation is top notch. On top of it all, there are over an hours of bonus features on the DVD, most of which are just as entertaining as the main features. These include:

-Trailers for six films starring Lucy
-An appearance on game show "What's My Line" with Lucy and Desi. Panelists try to guess the identity of their two mystery guests
-Desi appears on "I've Got A Secret", with Lucy as the fourth member of the panel
-An original TV commercial for I Love Lucy
-Lucy and Desi appear in a Phillip Morris TV ad. Phillip Morris was a frequent Lucy sponsor, and it is always interesting to look back at a time when ads for cigarettes were all over the tube.
-"Adventures of a Model", a promo spot co-starring Joanne Dru, that gets interrupted by Desi and Lucy.
-Bloopers and Behind the Scenes: Home movies and candid shots before Lucy and Bob Hope get into a competition about who flubbed the most lines during their special. Bloopers are always fun and its great to see these two having fun on the set. After the segment with Bob, there are bloopers of Lucy working with animals, which are also fun.

The bonus materials end with deleted scenes from the Main Feature Westinghouse Special, and assorted trailers from Legend Films, who colorized the compilation.

On the whole, it is a great DVD, with lots of great Lucy TV and film moments, many of which can't be found elsewhere. It looks fantastic, is packed with laughs, and comes at a great price. Any Lucy fan you know will love watching this DVD.

Randolph Scott is his usual stiff but smiling self as Leo Vincey, the long-lost American heir to a British family legacy, sent by his estranged father to reclaim the legendary "Flame of Life," discovered five centuries ago by his explorer ancestor. Producer Merian C. Cooper, best known for directing King Kong, changes the locale of H. Rider Haggard's classic adventure from Africa to the Arctic (which, apart from a spectacular avalanche, looks positively stagebound), but he pulls out all stops for the magnificent underground kingdom hidden in the icy mountains, complete with a cavernous throne room with vaulted ceilings and a massive staircase that would look right at home in the Ziegfeld Follies. The cruel She Who Must Be Obeyed (Helen Gahagan) is a beautiful but icy queen driven ruthless by her centuries of loneliness. The film takes some time to get started but once She makes her impressive entrance through a mist-enshrouded arch, we're plunged into a dangerous, exotic world of strange ceremonies, human sacrifices, nefarious plots, and the gorgeous whirlwind of light that is the Flame of Life. Though the dialogue is often flat and uninspired and the performances by Scott and Gahagan rather arch (costars Nigel Bruce and Helen Mack fare much better), this grand adventure concludes with a rousing climax full of impressive set pieces and breathtaking effects. --Sean Axmaker

4 out of 5 stars SHE is still a delight!.......2007-05-09

The original in black & white and a seconmd version in color. A double treat for this good old-fashioned melodrama.

3 out of 5 stars Dated adventure fantasy.......2007-03-17

Square jawed Randolph Scott woefully miscast playing American Leo Vinsey is beckoned to the bedside of his dying English uncle John in the 1935 film "She". He is told of the legacy of their ancestor John Vinsey who 500 years ago discovered a mystical land called Kor in the frozen northern regions of the Arctic beyond the Russian tundra. It had been reported that within Kor there is an eternal flame which is capable of bestowing immortality.

Scott who along with his uncle's sidekick Horace Holly played by a pre- Dr. Watson Nigel Bruce embark on a perilous journey to the land of Kor. Along the way they pick up a guide's daughter Tanya played by Helen Mack who joins them on their trek. They make their way to this fabled locale to find it ruled by a cruel despotic Queen Hash-A-Mo Tep known as She played by Helen Gahagan who tries to lure Scott to share her immortality with her.

The movie "She" was a fanciful tale replete with both garish sets and costumes and a sickening overdone sense of melodrama. The acting for the most part was horrendous lead by the wooden Scott who was far more effective in his milieu, the western.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome.......2007-03-10

I remember having seen the black & white version of this film some twenty years ago - - but I was completely "blown away" by the Ray Harryhausen and Legend Films colorized version. The chorography and music of the dance sequence is alone worth the price of admission. Raldoph Scott - although sometimes critized as being "wooden" - was perfect in this film - as was Helen Gahagan. Sadly - although Helen Gahagan was an exceptional actress - this was her only film. (She was a stage actress.) As an added bonus - the optional audio commentary provides a wealth of background and historical information that is a must for all film buffs.

5 out of 5 stars SHE says get this movie.......2007-02-24

This is a lot of fun to watch. Most people will connect Merian C. Cooper with the original King Kong, but this is also a great film. Randolph Scott is the star here as the leader of an expedition to find the "flame of life. Look for Nigel Bruce in a supporting role. He was better known for his portrayal of Dr. Watson in the Basil Rathbone Sherlock Holmes. Special effect are very good for their day, but do not over take the storytelling. This DVD has both the original version and a colorized one. I recommend this, its fun!

3 out of 5 stars BEWARE: arbitrary deletions!.......2007-01-15

Being a huge fan of the spectacular results this outfit gets, I was shocked and alarmed to discover that several scenes in this classic film were arbitrarily DELETED from the original director's print! They are included in the "extras", but still, this practice (they've done it before) is deplorable and disturbing. What can they be thinking?

The 1969 short movie of the beloved Johnny Lingo receives feature-length treatment in this heartwarming family film by veteran producers John Garbett and Jerry Molen. Filmed in New Zealand, this seafaring adventure expands the legend of the wealthy island trader by tracing back to childhood the boy, Tama, who eventually becomes Johnny Lingo's namesake. When a storm casts ashore a tiny canoe carrying the infant boy, Tama's tribe receives him as a gift from the gods. But when misfortune strikes, Tama is cursed and cast out to live with a feisty girl, Mahana, and her drunken father. Mahana and Tama forge a friendship and when Tama is old enough to sail away from the island, he vows one day to return for her. Good fortune takes Tama to the isle of Johnny Lingo, who teaches him life lessons of fair trade, hard work, and honor. Tama eventually returns to bestow dignity on Mahana in an ashes-to-beauty love story. Steven Ramirez, in his directorial debut, retains the spirit of Patricia McGerr's original story, "Johnny Lingo's Eight Cow Wife," underscoring the power of second chances. (Ages 6 and older) --Lynn Gibson

Description

Based on the beloved story, this wholesome coming-of-age tale is "a wonderful family film full of tender moments, exciting adventure and good, old-fashioned values" ("The 700 Club")! Far away on a tropical island, an orphan boy named Tama is "cursed" by his tribe and finds comfort in a fellow outcast: Mahana, a feisty girl shunned for herragged appearance. When Tama sails off in search of a new life, he promises a tearful Mahana to return for her someday. But Tama's journey leads him to Johnny Lingo, a wealthy trader who makes Tama his apprentice and heir. Now, as Tama embraces his new life, he must learn that the measure of a man is not in his possessions but in love, friendship and in Tama's case honoring a promise from the past.

Great Movie, good to watch with all the family. Teaches courage and self esteem.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent movie.......2006-03-10

This is an excellent coming of age movie. Themes include forgiveness, trust, true love, promise keeping, uselessness of vanity and good work ethics. The movie will be enjoyed by the entire family (6 or so and up). We have recommended this movie to several friends.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful!.......2006-03-07

This is a great family movie. It's a refreshing change from the overly sophisticated material we usually see being peddled to our children.

5 out of 5 stars What a beautiful, wholesome movie!.......2005-08-07

No, you will not find any of the horror, violence or sex that is so prevalent in our movies this day and age. What you will find is a heartwarming story about love, value and morals. A story that teaches the lesson that everyone has worth and that everyone deserves someone to believe in them.

The scenery was a wonderful bonus, shot in beautiful New Zealand.

My husband picked up this movie because we had rented Spaceballs and it was not clean enough for my 6 year old daughter to watch. I was skeptical at first since I had never heard of it but it turned out to be one of the better movies I have seen in a long time. My daughter sat and quietly watched the whole movie. Not many times does she do that.

If you are truly looking for a good, clean family movie that will leave you with an uplifted spirit and smile in your heart then I would recommend giving this movie a shot.

5 out of 5 stars Truely a magnificent movie for thw whole family.......2004-11-08

Magnificent movie that teaches love, respect, not to be judgemental, tollerance, and humility, and the vale of true friendship. Inforces committment & promises.

I believe that this is not only just a good movie, but a family treasure. We plan on sending coppies to all of our chrildre.

4 out of 5 stars An Overlooked and Undervalued Treat---3.5 Stars.......2007-04-04

I remember first watching BABY: SECRET OF THE LOST LEGEND with my family on the screen of a drive-in movie theatre. Like many children my age, I was fascinated with dinosaurs (and still am) and found the movie completely captivating. I remember crying at a particular scene in the movie and trying to understand why the soldiers with guns were so cruel. Many years later I have been able to watch the film again. I noticed many things I would have never noticed as a kid, such as pacing, acting, etc. However, despite having been made over twenty years ago, BABY remains rather well-preserved and is a special treat for those with a nostalgic attachment.

BABY begins in the streets of an African city during a parade and festival that reminded me of some from a James Bond movie. One man is being pursued through the streets by another. The chase ends in an alley and we discover why the one man was being hunted: photos of the mysterious Mokele-Mbembe, a supposed dinosaur that natives of the Congo believe to still exist and roam the jungles to this day. From the festive streets, the film quickly moves to a more remote area where American sportswriter George Loomis (William Katt of THE GREATEST AMERICAN HERO fame) is trying to teach some of the natives at a paleontological research camp how to play baseball. He is interrupted by a phone call from New York offering him a job at the Times. George is eager to get back to the States, but receives the offer just as his wife, Susan Matthews-Loomis (Sean Young), has discovered the biggest find of her life. Susan's mentor, Dr. Eric Kiviat (Patrick McGoohan), tries to downplay her discovery and claims it's just a giraffe. However, after talking with a Red Cross relief worker, Susan begins to realize that her discovery was substantial. A little marital conflict ensues, but Susan sets off down river and is immediately followed by George. Their voyage brings them in contact with a small family of brontosaurs (now known as apatosaurs). But Susan and George aren't the only one's looking for the dinosaurs, so is Dr. Kiviat and he has hired an army of guerilla soldiers to help him capture the creatures and bring them to captivity. The dinos are in some serious trouble and Susan and George are their only chance for escape.

BABY has elements from several different film genres as evidenced by the cover of the DVD which quotes the Los Angeles Daily News as saying BABY is "a cross between RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK and E.T." There clearly is some evidence of Indiana Jones, especially towards the beginning of the movie and at the end. The film does have a similar spirit as E.T. in that Baby becomes separated from her parents and Susan and George try to reunite the broken family. As I mentioned earlier, there also seems to be a bit of spy-action involved, ala James Bond that influences the opening sequence and the way the villain, Dr. Kiviat reacts through much of the film. Despite this hodge-podge of genre mashing, BABY works. The different influences don't stand out in any jarring way and the overall structure of the film flows together rather nicely.

The movie has also aged rather well. Except for a few items of clothing and a heavy bent towards the changing roles of men and women, it's difficult to place the film from a specific period. The movie was made in the mid 1980s, but if someone didn't know that they might guess the movie was made anywhere from the late 1960s until the mid 1990s. About the only thing that has drastically changed since BABY was released are special effects. The special effects in BABY are a far cry from the CGI-heavy films audiences have now become acquainted with. Nevertheless, at the time BABY offered some impressive special effects. Animatronics and classic film trickery make up the bulk of the movie's special effects and they really aren't that bad.

BABY is rated PG, but there are some parents who feel the film isn't appropriate for children. The film was released just as the PG-13 rating was being used. Sensitive parents should know that the movie includes some violence (soldiers with guns, natives with bows and arrows, explosions), some nudity (once again natives dancing and walking in the wilderness), and some foul language. I don't think any of this takes away from the film or is anything that should cause parents and guardians to become overtly concerned about. The violence in the film is of the type that was typical of early 1980s family television and seems almost cartoony compared to what passes on network television today. The nudity is akin to pictures from National Geographic and the foul language is used rarely (I think there are some sh**s and a couple of d**ns). There's also a hint of sexual innuendo, but it occurs between the married husband and his wife and doesn't seem out of place. In fact, the relationship between George and Susan is a healthy one and could be viewed as a cinematic example of what a healthy, functional marriage is supposed to look like.

I loved BABY when I first saw it as a child and it was one of those movies that has stuck with me my whole life. Seeing the film decades later, I know that it isn't the greatest dinosaur movie ever made, but it's not really that bad either.

1 out of 5 stars Not appropriate for children.......2006-02-19

Violence, foul language, semi nudity/foreplay. This is not appropriate for children. I am surprised it received a PG rating. It should have been at least a PG-13. The idea of rescuing a baby dinosaur and its mother is very appealing to children, but the movie would need heavy editing to be a children's movie. We did not finish watching this movie.

5 out of 5 stars A film to cherish........2006-02-01

This movie is a pure delight. For its time, the dinosaur looks fine, it is not scary. Children will not be shocked, confused, or terrified by the language or content of this film (unless of course, they are overly sensitive and have night terrors after watching Bambi.)
I saw this film in my youth, and went on a quest to own it. Although some of my appraisal is based purely on nostalgia, I love this movie as an adult. It is sweet, entertaining and teaches moral lessons about the wrongful quest for fame, fortune, and prestiege at the expense of the innocent.

2 out of 5 stars Sappy and overly-cute .......2005-07-27

This is a dinosaur movie but there is not even a remote possibility that it could be mistaken for Jurassic Park .It centres on a young American couple ,played by William Katt and Sean Young ,who rescue a new born dinosaur baby from the African rain forest .He is a sportswriter and she a paleontologist .
The dinasuar's father has been killed by the evil scientist -Patrick McGoohan -who has also captured its mother .Katt and Young look after the baby ,and set themselves the twin tasks of saving it and rescuing its mother .
There follows a prolonged chase through the jungle aided by friendly natives and menaced by McGoohan and corrupt cops in his pay .
The main problem with the movie is its lurches in tone .There are several violent scenes and the suggestive dialogue between Katt and Young ,together with frequent semi-nudity between them ,renders it unsuitable for the younger audience while the often unconvincing special effects will not play well with older viewers .The dinosaurs are Ok in long shot but look very fake and plasticky in close-up having a Shirley Temple cutsiness that is slightly icky .
It falls between two stools -not really a kids movie and too childish for adults.
McGoohan -predictably -steals the acting honours with an enjoyably over the top impersonation of comic book evil

1 out of 5 stars UUUUUUUUUUUGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHH.......2005-04-30

I saw this once when I was little. I cried because of the sencless animal violence. I tried watching it last week again. I didn't cry this time, but I still hate it. I mean: who woulda thought that its possible to get so emmotional over fake looking dinosaurs??? Yea, VERY fake. Not to mention the rating. More like PG-13 or R for that matter. Lotsa swearing, violence, and naked ugly tribal chicks. The only funny line in this entire piece of @#$% is when the guy tells his airplane driver about his wife. When he says "What would you do?" The hippie airplane pilot says "Personally, I'd whip the b**ch." Ha ha. Funny. Almost. I never even finished this movie.

Robbie the Reindeer is as short as many of the made-for-TV classics that have preceded it, like How the Grinch Stole Christmas, but so much action, zippy dialogue, and witty visual puns have been packed into its 29-minute running time that you'd swear it was longer. For this reason, it also stands up to repeat viewing better than some of the more straightforward programs of recent years, although it is directed toward a slightly older audience--age 10 and up--due to some sexual innuendo. Whether Robbie will become a holiday perennial in the U.S. is yet to be seen, but he appears to have won the hearts of the U.K. and shares a lineage with another stop-motion favorite, Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer. Robbie just happens to be Rudolph's son, and Pop is keen to see his lovable--but lazy--progeny follow in his famous hoof prints. Adults may get a kick out of the fact that the story line was actually inspired more by Rocky than by Rudolph. As in Rocky, there's a supportive female (Donner) and a crusty old trainer (Old Jingle). Together they help Robbie get in shape for the Reindeer Games, where he'll have the chance to show Santa whether he has the right stuff or not. Fans of Aardman Animations should appreciate the detailed animation and clever humor. The cream of Britain's comic crop provides the voices, including Jane Horrocks (Absolutely Fabulous) as Donner. Pop singer Robbie Williams narrates the story, and Mark Knopfler provides the music. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Description

Two fabulously funny animated holiday classics brought to you by a brilliant creative team including writer Richard Curtis (Bridget Jones' Diary, Four Weddings and a Funeral, Notting Hill) and directed by Richard Goleszowski (Wallace & Gromit, Rex The Runt)
Robbie the Reindeer in Hooves of Fire - He's a bit lazy, a bit chubby, and totally lovesick. Robbie is at a crossroad in life and is soon convinced he's hopelessly unfit to join Santa's sleigh team. So begins his first hilariously hip adventure, as Robbie learns there is no easy route to success and that hard work and talent get rewarded in the end.
Robbie the Reindeer in Legend of the Lost Tribe - Follow Robbie as he sets out to discover a mythical tribe of lost Viking warriors to help him save his friends from another dastardly plot by the evil Blitzen and his new-found partner-in-crime The White Rabbit. Robbie is having girl trouble too - Donner is feeling neglected and decides to give Robbie an ultimatum. Can Robbie save the day, keep his girl and unravel the mystery of the Legend of the Lost Tribe?

3 out of 5 stars Enjoyable way to spend time but nothing outstanding.......2007-01-28

I certainly enjoyed my time watching Robbie, but I wouldn't go so far as to recommend it to anyone but animation buffs. I listened to it with the British soundtrack (an option you can select on the American disc), and I enjoyed the humor and the storyline, but there was very little that made me laugh out loud or that I thought about even an hour later.

The humor was crass at times and definitely not suitable for children. I think the crassness of the humor made it less funny, like they were trading cleverness for crassness and hoping we wouldn't notice the difference.

I'd love to see more from the animators, because this was a near miss. A little bit more time spent writing good dialogue or a funny plot would have gone a long way towards making this a five star show.

Until then, try Wallace and Gromit or Creature Comforts - both are cleverly hilarious and have truly fantastic claymation.

3 out of 5 stars Funny, but inapporpiate for very young children.......2006-12-23

Robbie The Reindeer is really a comedy greared for older kids maybe 8 or 10 years old and up. It's not innocent entertainment for very young children like my three year old son. I did not want him to watch it, so it is going to his older cousins. They will get a kick out of it.

2 out of 5 stars AMERICAN VOICES???.......2006-12-01

...for a british film??? I saw this movie a few years ago on TV, and then the following year eagerly anticipated watching it again...only to be terribly disappointed that the "powers that be" decided to completely ruin the humor by dubbing those English character voices with American voices...and not even good ones at that!!! Ben Stiller and Brittney Spears??? were they the only actors/media darlings who didn't think it was a bad idea?...the voiceovers leave the movie sadly lacking in character and humor. Shame on whoever thought that was a good idea (one of the networks), I guess they must think that the general public are not smart enough, or interested enough, to understand the British humor...there are a few inside jokes that mainly British viewers would appreciate, the voice of the Yeti sports commentator is done by a very well known British sports commentator for example.

I'll give it two stars...only because the animation is still there, and very good - but i'll give it a miss this Christmas.

1 out of 5 stars Just be AWARE.......2006-11-30

1 star only because I can't put 0. Be AWARE this is not a FAMILY FRIENDLY DVD in my opinion. I was looking forward to something like Wallace and Gromit, Chicken Run, etc, but this one should have been rated at the very least PG-13. I turned it off after the first few minutes watching with my 8 and 10 year old boys. I did not care for the manner in which the female reindeer were animated, a bit of language, and the more adult situations with a party and Santa BBQing in an apron that looks like a lacy g-string. Just be careful if your plan is to purchase and view with children.

2 out of 5 stars Robbie the Reindeer (Hooves of Fire/The Ledgend of the Lost Tribe).......2005-10-12

Not real thrilled with this movie. My husband & I have been a great fan of Wallace & Gromit for years. Our 3-year old is also a great fan of Wallace & Gromit. This is a definate adult R rated film and not for children. Kind of slow and very disappointing.

5 out of 5 stars Let me be blunt............2007-02-26

Instead of writing a page long thesis on this movie's plot or lack thereof, and dissecting the acting techniques of the leads, I am going to get right to the point and tell you what you need to hear: This movie has a cast consisting primarily of hot, well endowed chicks, who frequently bare their breasts, and get naked. There really is no sex to speak of, and the plot is so paper thin as to be invisible. If you're looking for a soft core flick with copious big bare breasts, then this is for you. If you're looking for something with cohesion or plot or great acting, then skip this. Personally, I love it. Couldn't be happier with it, and have also purchased the second one, with plans to buy the third. But it's definitely not for everyone.

Recommended for fans of "Joe Bob Briggs Drive in Theater" on Showtime. Everyone else, view at your own risk.

4 out of 5 stars Julie K. Smith and Nikki Fritz. Period........2005-08-18

A few years ago I was browsing through the movie section at a store, and over in the bargin bin, I found The Bare Wench Project. Having been disappointed by The Erotic Witch Project, I decided to give this one a go, figuring it couldn't be worse than Erotic Witch. Plus the price was right. Upon the first watch, I immediately fell in love with Julie K. Smith, a tough bad-ass woman with a chest that doesn't quit. Oh sure, there's Nikki Fritz, the only other woman in this movie that could maybe compare, but it's all about Julie. Dispte her being "just a B movie actress", she's great. She has the attitude, and she has the looks. Oh, and I guess there's some movie in here too. If you're reading this page, I doubt you're looking for something to watch and enjoy a deep plot or have some hearty laughs. If you're looking for a fun comedy with stunning women, you've come to the right place.

If you know the plot of The Blair Witch Project, that's what this is for the most part, only the witch has been replaced with a sexual woman who has the power to make anyone in her territory full with lust. 4 beautiful women and one lucky guy head out to do a documentary about said wench, and there the zany comedy ensues. Their AV guy, Lunk, is your typical guy, zooming in on all the right parts when the time comes. And this guy's great. He's funny and has some good physical comedy in the beginning. His commentary alone makes this movie worth at least one watch. But of course, it's all about the women. Again, I stress that Julie K. Smith is nothing short of a goddess. Fake or not, she looks good. Nikkie Fritz is also up there, and Lorissa MCComas and Julie Strain are included as well. Julie Strain plays the wench, who's in the movie for maybe 10 minutes, but the scene's worth it, though it doesn't make too much sense. There's also the fourth girl who's in the woods with the others, but she's usually behind the camera, and doesn't do much. She'd be the typical ditzy blonde here. Bah, I forgot about the movie summary. The girls and Lunk go into the woods, then slowly the wench's lust powers take over. But it's in small doses. This is a B movie, so there's nothing too explicit. It's mostly chest. But is that a bad thing? If you're looking for more, then do so. The Bare Wench Project is a light-hearted comedy that'll actually keep your attention thanks to Lunk and non-stop beautiful women.

I can't say too much for the audio and picture quality. It was mostly shot on DV cameras, so there's nothing mind-blowing here. Some scenes look awful, like when the girls are in their tent, while others look good- when they're walking around the woods and look for some shade. It's a mixed bag, and the voices are mostly center-focused (if you have a basic tv, then you're set. There's no use of surround sound really).

The only reason I dock a star is the lack of special features. All we get is the chapter selection aside from the "play movie" feature. That's a shame too. They offer a lot of bloopers for just one scene as the credits roll at the end. It's of the lesser-seen girl constantly screwing up her line about losing the map, and everyone's getting irritated by it. 'funny stuff, and we could've used more. I seriously doubt a special edition's in the works, as we already have two sequels. Cast bios would've been nice. I've seen Lunk in other movies, another with Julie even: Surviors Exposed.

I highly suggest you pick this sucker up. While the price is a little high now, it's worth it just for Julie and Nikki. Julie Strain addicts (you know who you are) will rush to get this just to see more of her, but the guy who plays Lunk is also getting a nice following. Here's to hoping for more. Especially of Julie.

2 out of 5 stars cute girls- bad movie.......2004-03-09

If you are looking for a few girls to flash their tops for a few seconds and then the camera focusing on this really fat ugly comedic character, this may be the movie for you. The camera is hardly ever on the girls more than a few seconds and the strip scene is ruined by it beinf shot in the dark and through a huge roaring fire. Do not waste your time with this movie. There are much better ones of this genre out there.

2 out of 5 stars Too little action, too much pointless talking........2003-10-07

Bare Wench is another softcore parody of the Blair Witch project (I think there's about two dozen of those things out there). It has 5 very attractive women (which includes Nikki Fritz, Julie Smith, and Julie Strain), and one dorky guy whose only purpose is to provide comic relief.

Okay, so I'm thinking "Cool. Great looking women, having softcore lesbian sex with each other very 10 minutes or so. This should be real good."

Unfortunately, the producers blew it. There is nothing in this video that actually qualifies as a sex scene. There's a couple of false starts, but the majority of the action is just the women posing for the camera. I guess once the producers had spent their money on the women, and spent more getting them to remove their clothes, they didn't have any money left to get them to actually do anything. And I guess they also used up all their alloted nudity time too early, because towards the end of the video, there is a huge amount of pointless dialogue that is obviously being used for no other reason than to pad out the run time. "You're a liar! No you are! You go into the cave! No you go! I think we should go home! Well, I don't!" This goes on and on and on forever.

There's way better stuff than this.

4 out of 5 stars Better than the Original.....................2003-09-27

This movie is pure greatness. Every girl has massive breasts and they ain't shy about it. I would have given it 5 stars if it wasn't so stupid. Still you can't deny the allure of naked breasts.
I give it three thumbs up (if you know what I mean)
