Set mainly in the Ireland the tourist board didn't tell you about, Into the West is the story of a "traveling" family who have given up their traditional life of roaming, and find themselves trying to make it in the gritty, violent projects of Dublin. Gabriel Byrne is excellent as Papa Reilly, a once-proud father and leader whose grief over his wife's death has turned him into a booze-sodden has-been. His two sons, Tito (Ruaidhri Conroy) and Ossie (Ciaran Fitzgerald), escape the projects on an apparently magical white horse, Tir Na Nog, which leads them back to the West. After being forced to steal the horse back from a wealthy and ruthless horse dealer, they are pursued across the increasingly beautiful landscape by virtually all the policemen in Ireland. The much-loved actor David Kelly (Waking Ned Devine) does a nice turn as the grandfather, and Ellen Barkin is a surprising but believable choice as an old "traveling" friend of Papa Reilly. For better or for worse--mainly better--this is not the story Disney would have told: redemptive and uplifting at the end, it's realistic to the point of ugliness on the way there, with a style of cinematography that the Magic Kingdom has never been able to stomach. The younger brother, Ossie, is supposed to be 7, but the story itself is perhaps more appropriate for somewhat older children. Entertainment Weekly's best family video for 1994. --Richard Farr

Spanning 65 years and several generations, Into the West succeeds as an ambitious compendium of authentic American history. Originally broadcast in the summer of 2005 as a six-part miniseries on TNT, it's the kind of well-intentioned epic that can't possibly satisfy everyone, and some critics complained that it covers too much territory, with characters functioning more as archetypes than full-blooded human beings. Criticisms aside, Into the West admirably achieves the goal of executive producer Steven Spielberg, who envisioned this expansive project as an accurate and corrective history lesson with long-term educational value. Placing important emphasis on the Native American perspective, it follows the Lakota Indians as they are gradually overwhelmed by the white man's irrevocable westward expansion. As conceived by playwright/screenwriter William Mastrosimone, the drama uses two primary symbols--the wagon wheel and the Lakota medicine wheel--to join the Lakota story with that of the Wheelers, a Virginia family of wheelwrights who witness many of the 19th century's pivotal historical milestones. From the pioneering explorations of mountain men in 1825 to the tragic massacre of downtrodden Lakota at Wounded Knee in 1891, these parallel storylines encompass migrating wagon trains, the California Gold Rush, construction of the transcontinental railroad, the violence of Quantrill's Raiders, and much, much more.
Through it all, Into the West preserves Lakota customs and language (accompanied by English subtitles) with unprecedented authenticity. In showing how Native cultures were systematically oppressed by the white man's westward capitalism, this tragic tale is inevitably heartbreaking, although it ends on a hopeful note of cultural preservation. Some violent content from the original TNT broadcast has been edited for this DVD release to better accommodate classroom viewing, but Into the West still qualifies as essential viewing for anyone seeking an inclusive dramatization of truthful American history, as opposed to the wildly inaccurate and woefully biased accounts that dominated for decades. With different directors for all six parts, the miniseries is remarkably consistent in tone and vision, its outstanding production values matched by the excellence of a prestigious and well-chosen cast including Irene Bedard (who gives the standout performance in a half-white/half-Lakota role spanning decades), Keri Russell, Skeet Ulrich, Balthazar Getty, Matthew Modine, Graham Greene, Wes Studi, Beau Bridges, Sean Astin, Lance Henriksen, Rachael Leigh Cook, Keith Carradine, and others too numerous to mention. They all contribute to a heartfelt tapestry of bicultural history, both tragic and inspiring, and impressive enough to make its flaws easily forgiven.
DVD features
A standard making-of documentary covers all aspects of the production of Into the West, with a brief introductory comment by Steven Spielberg. The "Communication Gap" featurette explores the challenge of translating dialogue into authentically spoken Lakota language. Also included is a survey (with interview clips) of the large cast; the original TNT promo trailer; and a music video of the miniseries-inspired song "World on Fire," combining Into the West footage with a performance by Sarah McLachlan and Robbie Robertson. --Jeff Shannon

This is a very good movie and was a hard to find since I have seen it on TV. I think people will like to see this.
Into the West.......2007-02-22
Great viewing, however for me it is still too much about the white mans perspective with enormous amount of time spent on their daily lives and what they endured whilst stealing lands belonging to others and not enough about the First Nations peoples daily lives. The actors were all tremendous.
Warning, this is wonderful but also a huge bummer - don't buy it!.......2007-02-14
Hi,
I really loved this DVD however there were missing sections and skips in the plot which apparently were not missing in the original TV showing. Only when I had watched the entire series and then saw the special features did I realize that it had been majorly edited, as entire stories like the gold rush, Railroad building and several other important Indian stories, and connecting stories where gone.
Another anoying aspect is that in the special features section several key supporting actors talk about their scenes and clips are shown and these characters are not even on the DVD edition.
For example there is one main character who appears to disappear from
the story but actually returns later only much older. I couldn't tell if it was one of two possible choices as that part of the story ( two separate stories for the two different characters) had been edited out - this left me somewhat confused until I saw the special features section and a bit of the missing story there explained it.
I went over the DVD several times to see if somehow I had missed a story on the discs by clicking on the wrong button or something but they were just not there - that's why I am so bummed!!! I borrowed this from a friend and am glad I didn't spent any $ on it.
Also it is advertised as a 12 hour mini series but after the editing is only 6 hours or less = a ripoff!
What a crime to have altered for the worse such an excellent work of art not to mention the insult to all the actors who were edited out of the DVD version.
That's my only beef otherwise I would have given it 4-5 stars.
If you don't care about these inadaquencies then get it as it's very well done. OTHERWISE I RECOMMEND THAT YOU WAIT UNTIL THIS HAS ALL BEEN CORRECTED AND A NEW DVD IS ISSUED BEFORE YOU SPEND YOUR $
Into the West.......2007-01-22
I purchased this movie as part of an assignment in college. I found it to be very educational but entertaining at the same time. I highly recommend this to anyone who is interested in history. I will not give away any details about the movie itself. It is a long movie but it keeps you on your toes and I walked away with information.
High Production Values, Low Entertainment Return.......2007-01-22
If you do a mini-series on the opening of the west I'm there, panting like a spoiled dog expecting a juicy handout.
I didn't see the original on TNT I got the DVD set,
Initially it started well. I thought the idea of following the lives of a family of wheelwrights inspired, being such a key craft for those heading west.
The series had great production values, beautiful locations, solid cinematography.
There is a strong cast and many good performances. One notable exception was Tom Berringer as the genocidal colonel in Colorado that unleashes attacks on the innocent Indians. His performance was awful. He delivered his lines woodenly, distractedly as if he had something else on his mind.
The strong start though doesn't sustain unfortunately.
While historically accurate (within the bounds of Hollywood) the series is Native American centric. The Mexican American war, civil war, slavery, gold rush, foreign immigration are treated as side notes while the plot concentrates on the native American tragedy that took place, much of which is presented in an extended soap operaish tale.
The plot drives along with its Native American theme, diverts briefly to something of historical significance, then it's back to a long stretch of As the Buffalo Turns.
Without a doubt the Native American genocide was a big part o the pageant of opening the west by European settlers but there is so much more that is simply left out or given short shift that in the end I didn't even finish the series. I was simply bored with the Native American soap opera that was unfolding before my eyes.

A brief review of "Into the West".......2007-03-09
A nice story about the Irish Travelers based in part on Irish mythology. A good movie for children about age 10 to adult years. A lot of realism but also fantasy. Very enjoyable!
Great Movie, But Rather Violent.......2007-01-10
I and my children loved this movie, however I'd like to caution parents who have smaller/sensitive/impressionable children. The movie has quite a few violent spots and the "authority figures" display a LOT of bigotry. The bigotry the police have towards the gypsies is prevalent throughout the entire movie and there are some spots where they brutalize the children's father as well as the horse. If your children are sensitive towards animal suffering or physical violence, you might want to view the movie by yourself first and then make sure you sit with them or skip those parts.
Overall, great movie -- just take care with the viewing.
INTO THE WEST.......2007-01-09
This is a DVD I have purcharsed before and it was a hit with my son and grandson so I bought them there own copy. Service and shipment time very good.
FABULOUS, MAGICAL, EXCITING MOVIE FOR ALL!.......2006-05-30
While searching for movies about horses, I came upon "INTO THE WEST" and after reading the reviews I bought it sight unseen...
As was said by many, this is a movie for ALL ages! A magical
white horse adopts two young boys of 8 and 12 (although the 8 year old looks more like 6) from a Dublin slum highrise. Bareback
they ride him to the west country of Ireland-leaving behind a sad
father who has left his traveller (Gypsy) life behind after his beloved wife died. He tries to 'settle' in a strange world, to him, and turns to drink. He hopes his two sons will be educated
and make something of themselves. Their Grandpa comes upon a beautiful white stallion who,at first, frightens the old man, but with his gypsy blood, he soon sees no harm in the horse and
reads his mind. He sets off for Dublin where he hasn't seen his
son-in-law nor his two grandsons-Tito & little Ossie for seven years. The horse follows his caravan and there begins the adventure!
Very sweet, very funny and scary in parts as they escape the VERY
wealthy man (who buys the horse from a crooked cop when the cop
sees how the horse, Tir na nOg, can jump like no horse can.)
He steals the horse and the boys steal him back. They are COWBOYS and the horse, with them on bareback, is leading them to the WILD WEST COUNTRY. Much goes on as they journey with their father after them (along with past traveller friends on horses through a cold winter so he can find his boys...)
You will love the way the boys and magical horse use all their wits to beat the police and greedy man who only sees money in the horse. You'll love the way they say "Hi Ho Silver AWAAAAY!"
and the horse rears up and takes off, always protecting them...
The end is amazing! It's then you find out the truth about the
horse... It's filled with excitment and the boys are so real!
Gabriel Byrne gives his all! You will see an Ireland like never before. Watch it more than once and you will fall in love with two darlin'little boys and a beautiful white stallion...
Exellent.......2006-03-28
I think into the West is a fantastic family film for all ages.
Its a film that touches your heart and makes you laugh and cry and recommend this film as a classic and is a must have to add to a DVD collection.

Directed by Stephen Judson (Everest, the Oscar®-nominated short Dolphins) and narrated by Liam Neeson (the voice behind Everest and The Endurance), Journey into Amazing Caves centers around the work of "cavers" Nancy Aulenbach and Dr. Hazel Barton. Aulenbach is a teacher from Georgia, and Barton, a microbiologist from England. During the course of the 38-minute documentary, they travel from Arizona to Greenland to Mexico, exploring remote caves all the way. All are difficult to get to; some can only be reached by rock climbing (the cave in the Grand Canyon), others can only be reached by rappelling down slick sheets of ice (the one in Greenland). As a result, there's something for everyone in this popular IMAX feature, including a dramatic score from the Moody Blues (reworked versions of old hits, plus new songs "Water" and "We Can Fly") and a revealing "making of" documentary featuring interviews with cast and crew. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Description
Journey into Amazing Caves is a visceral, suspenseful expedition with a new breed of scientists who boldly explore places once thought off-limits to human presence, let alone IMAX cameras. Join Dr. Hazel Barton and Nancy Aulenbach as they travel to unique and forbidding ice caves in Greenland, underwater caves in the Yucatan, terrestrial caves in the Grand Canyon and other spectacular locations. You will wriggle through tiny, twisting passages, swim through flooded underground vaults, drop into gleaming blue labyrinths of ice, and enter a world so extreme the microscopic creatures who live there are called extremophiles. For those compelled to push their limits in the world's most hostile environments, the risk of fatal danger and thrill of new discovery are the everyday factors that make cave exploration such an awe-inspiring experience. Narrated by Liam Neeson, with music by The Moody Blues. Disc 2 includes the complete feature in Microsoft Windows Media High Definition, playable on your PC.

Girl Power!.......2007-04-16
My Brownie troop saw this video at a gem and mineral show. There was tons of fascinating stuff at the show and the video was 40 minutes long, but I just could not tear them away. First through third graders sat and watched the whole thing absolutely enthralled. The objective of playing the video at the gem and mineral show was to interest people in spelunking. Mission accomplished! And how perfect for a troop of Brownies that it was women featured in the movie. I plan to check this movie out of the library so my daughters can watch it again.
Amazing Caves WMVHD Edition.......2007-02-14
The DVD is magnificient but the WMV Disc is problematic
all the demos work fine but the full lenght movies 720 format and 1080 formats will only work if the computer is "fully" compatible with the "windows" DRM system.
if your video card or your monitor or your soundcard is not an approved piece of hardware be prepared to be dissapointed or fork out a lot of money for the DRM approved replacements
I am one of the Dissapointed ones because the sound card built in to the motherboard of the computer is not acceptable to the movie DRM
MUST SEE.......2005-07-21
This was a great adventure the documentary is the most beautiful I have ever seen! It really gives you great appreciation for MOTHER EARTH! MUST SEE! AMAZING!!!!
Caves, what caves?.......2005-06-15
This is the most misleadlingly (is that a word?)titled movie I have ever seen. Amazing caves? What caves? The first 15 minutes of this reletively short 40 minute film don't take place in any cave. All they do is talk about them. Then when they finally enter a cave they are there for a few seconds. The few and far between cave scenes are interspersed with lots kayaking scenes, laboratory scenes, and classroom scenes. Was this film funded by the pharmasutical industry? The lead scientist in the film is always saying how she does this cave dwelling stuff to find exrtremophiles that will create new cures for diseases. Blechh! I wanted a movie about caves that showed beautiful caves. Granted, the latter half of the film provided more cave time but it was too little too late with too much of an environmental-disease-curing propaganda feel to it than I could stomach. It should have been titled "How To Search for New Cures in a Few Caves while Being Environmentally Conscious." Somehow I don't think that title would have sold many IMAX tickets or DVD's.
Exceptional High Definition quality.......2004-12-14
First off, the image quality of the HD disk is incredibly impressive. Yes, you need to have a PC hooked to an HDTV, but with the popularity of the new Media Center Edition (MCE) computers, this is much more mainstream than it was a year ago. I was an early adopter of the MCE system and I think it's the only way to watch High Definition DVD's.
As to the program itself, this is one of the funnest DVD's to watch over and over again. There's not too much of a story, but the music, narration, and cinematography is completely captivating. The underwater scenes and ice cave sequences are beautiful. I have two small kids, and they would much rather watch this than Nickelodeon.

Absolutely horrible.......2002-03-30
I like a wide variety of Westerns from the classic Rio Bravo of Howard Hawks to Jim Jarmusch's Dead Man, but Into the Badlands is so bad that I threw it away after watching it once. Slick packaging and quality stars entice you to buy the movie. However, multiple story lines have little to do with each other and even fine stars like Bruce Dern, Helen Hunt and Mariel Hemingway can't save this turkey. Dern's character Barston should have saved his bullets to use on the director and screenwriters. The only saving grace was that I was able to use the dustcover for another DVD I have.
A Different, but Enjoyable Western.......2001-06-09
Provocative to say the least. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and bought the DVD to always have it on hand. In this made for TV film, representing a compilation of three short stories, Bruce Dern was exceptional in his role as a bounty hunter. It depicts aspects of bounty hunting ranging from the thrill, to the harsh reality to even the comedic. Although many people did not like the style in which the film was cut, I found its unexpected twists and turns along with its overall mystique very entertaining. The music is very compelling and ties the film together nicely. If you like "high pride" Westerns, this is a must see.
I've seen a lot of weird movies..........2001-01-15
and this one ranks right up there. The back of the tape describes it as a "surreal western" and that's about right. It includes many characters that die but not really, some unique hallucinations, and narrations that are either creepy or funny depending on your interpretation. My dad bought this one off of a discount rack for $6, thinking it was a normal western. It's really a horror movie, and a weird one at that. My favorite movies are the strange sick ones, so I liked it very much. If you have similar taste, you'll definitely like this one. To classify it as a Western is really ridiculous. It's a few short creepy stories tied in together by one common character, and the fact that it takes place in the old West seems almost incidental. "Normal" people probably wouldn't like this one, and when my parents saw it, they said they couldn't believe that Helen Hunt, Dylan McDermott, and Mariel Hemingway would ever be in it.

Customer Reviews:
This DVD is awesome.......2004-09-25
This DVD is so good. I picked it up at my local store for $10 Australian Dollars. This has the full-length film-clips for "Tonite", "Trouble", "Born & Raised In Compton" & "Quik Is The Name". It also has lots of concert footage, a tupac tribute, a mausberg tribute & lots of behind-the-scenes footage. If i was u i would get this without even thinking twice about it.
Off the Hook If you like Quik.......2004-05-19
I was watching and i seen myself in the photo gallery part when DJ quik did a concert here in Phoenix. IM in like 5 pics. Nice DVD with old skool quik videos
Don't Be "Quik" To Judge On This DVD!.......2004-04-26
He's been in the music industry for close to 15 years. He continues to write, produce, and perform some of the most addictive music in the history of West Coast rap. Still, DJ Quik must fight to gain respect. With his latest project, a full-length DVD movie chronicling his life on tour, in the studio, and all sorts of behind-the-scenes action, Quik aims to shows his fans all of the hard work that goes into making his music.
"Visualism" isn't your average "Behind The Music" profile. You'll not only get to hear Quik speak on his life and his career but also get some insight on how he produces his music. There is a lot of very interesting information for all the aspiring producers and musicians out there.
"Visualism" not only shows what Quik has been up to but it also introduces you to the line-up of artists who work with him on a regular basis including Hi-C, Suga Free, and AMG. It also has Quik speaking on his departed homeboy, Mausberg, with concert footage of the late rapper as well as video of Quik's tribute to him on tour. Quik also speaks on another deceased rapper, the legendary Tupac Shakur. You'll also see Quik in the studio working with Nate Dogg on the soundtrack for the Chris Rock movie, "Head Of State". You also get a commentary track where Quik speaks on the entire movie.
Any true DJ Quik fan will want to own this DVD and if even if you've never heard anything that Quik has put down in the studio, this might convert you. You may want to pick up a few of his albums and get the backstory on his career first though.
It's Cool, But Could've Been A Lot Better.......2004-03-26
I'm a huge Quik fan and this DVD is cool, but it had too much studio footage and too much of the camera following Quik around. And the big dissappointment was that it only had 4 videos. It should've had most if not all of his videos and a better biography of how he got started in the game. So you should only buy this if your a big Quik fan. If not than don't bother.
ONLY FOR TRUE QUIK FANS.......2004-03-17
this dvd is truely an inside view on Quik and represents so much of the CPT
