Walter Hill's colorful directorial debut has quite a cult following for its toughness and violence; it may well be his best film, in fact. Charles Bronson plays a silent street fighter in New Orleans in the '30s managed by the cool James Coburn. Jill Ireland, Strother Martin, and Michael McGuire costar in this spare existential Depression dirge. It owes a lot to its noir origins that Hill adores so much, yet there's something very fresh and vital about its subject and approach. That's really what made so many of these films from the '70s so endearing. An added bonus is the love and affection displayed by the real-life husband and wife team of Bronson and Ireland. --Bill Desowitz

As can be clearly seen from the care lavished on these six BBC adaptions of Charles Dickens' novels, the British love their Dickens! And why not--Dickens is ideally suited to television, with his elaborate but vigorous plots, each a compendium of comically odious personalities (and one or two nice folk, just to keep things from getting too awful). Actors dig into these meaty roles with zeal, delighting in the hairpin turns from macabre horror to sweet sentiment. The more popular (and most frequently adapted) of the books at hand--Great Expectations and Oliver Twist--are the most conventional. The 1981 mini-series Expectations (in which young Pip learns the pitfalls of wealth through his relationship with the rich and bitter Mrs. Havishamand and her warped ward, Estella) is dutiful to its source but not adapted with much inspiration. Twist, from 1985, fares better; it's a zippy treatment of this tale of childhood deprivation and juvenile delinquency, and the horrors of Victorian orphanages will raise your hackles. The adaptation is capable but a little flat--still, any story where an undertaker observes, "Every tear is another shilling in the till," is clearly not lacking in wicked wit.

Fortunately, the others are considerably juicier: Martin Chuzzlewit, a lesser-known but richly satirical book, has a star-studded production from 1994, featuring Paul Scofield, Tom Wilkinson, Pete Postlethwaite, and Julia Sawalha, among others. The wealthy Martin Chuzzlewit, deeply suspicious of all mankind due to being hounded by greedy, grasping relatives, threatens the happiness of his ward Mary and his namesake grandson. In addition to the sterling and energetic cast, Chuzzlewit has outstanding production values, as does the 1998 version of Our Mutual Friend, which goes to great lengths to evoke the textures of life in Dickens' London. The mysterious death of a man about to inherit a great fortune sets in motion a complex plot that intertwines two love stories (it's one of Dickens' most romantic works), social scheming, and murderous obsession. The names aren't quite as famous (such as Paul McGann, Timothy Spall, Anna Friel, and Keeley Hawes), but the performances are top-notch and the script is particularly dynamic.

Bleak House, a Kafka-esque story of young innocents caught in an all-consuming, multi-generational lawsuit, cultivates a rich and potent Gothic horror; the 19th century seems like an unnerving alien world, through which lawyers and policemen stride like cruel predators. Diana Rigg is the most famous face in this 1985 production, but strong performances abound. The final component of this box set is the most curious: A 1994 version of Hard Times starring Alan Bates and Richard E. Grant, which turns this dark story--about a schoolmaster/politician who raises his children on reason at the expense of all feeling and finally reaps the bitter rewards--into a compact, theatrical feature film that's so swift it's almost jaunty. Adapted and directed by Peter Barnes (writer of The Ruling Class), it's the most stylized production of the bunch, and while lacking the depth and narrative detail of the others, it effectively cuts to the essence of Dickens. --Bret Fetzer

5 out of 5 stars Dickens Package 1.......2007-06-27

This collection is an embarassment of riches. Each story is divided into several episodes which take time to view and absorb. So far we have only viewed "Bleak House" and "Our Mutual Friend". Both are excellent and capture the steamy world of Dicken's London. I think I am constantly amazed at the attention to detail that the Brits recreate in historical drama. And of course there is the wealth of character playing for which Britain has always been famous. A really excellent series.

5 out of 5 stars Dickensian Delights.......2007-06-02

This collection is wonderful, you can "watch" these novels over and over, faithful to Dickens in tone, plot and spirit -- Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars opinion.......2007-06-02

I've just bought the collection, I've seen 3 movies so far, they're great, faithful to the books I've read. They come with cc(closed caption)so it helps the understanding. I watch a film and read the book. They're perfect for those who are really into literature. I highly recommend them.

5 out of 5 stars lovely , region 1 only .......2007-05-08

The dark stories about the impossible lives of the unfortunate makes it a kind of films that will glue anyone to the chair. BBC serieses are not like any other film, and I simply escape to anothr world every time I watch.
Had to watch it in my computer though, since it was not my region( not even after I changed the region in my "region free" DVD player ) which also means I had no subtitles either. A good computer screen is needed for that purpose.

4 out of 5 stars Good value.......2007-03-28

My husband and I are major fanatics when it comes to literary
pieces brought to film. We have been renting some of these classic BBC films from an online rental business. We finally decided to buy the set. My husband, being a english teacher, loved several of these films. The best two out of the set is Martin Chuzzlewit and Our Mutual Friend. It is a shame that Hard Times did not live up to the book and was only roughly based off of it. We just finished Oliver Twist, not knowing the story at all, we were on the of our seats just waiting to hear the big twist and to see how the plot works itself out. Highly recommended, even with Hard Times being not faithful to the book.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Bronson plays "The Streetfighter" during the Depression in New Orleans.......2007-06-28

"Hard Times" was Walter Hill's 1975 directorial debut. He also wrote the screenplay. His preferred (more accurate and better) title was "The Streetfighter," as it was/is known in Europe. Hill went on to do more popular films like "The Warriors" (1979) and "The Long Riders" (1980). The reason I was interested in checking out "Hard Times" is because it had garnered a bit of a cult reputation over the years (although not as cult-ish as "The Warriors").

THE PLOT: Charles Bronson plays a poor drifter/loner (Chaney) during the Depression who travels by boxcar to New Orleans. He spies an illegal bare-knuckle fight in a warehouse and offers his fighting talents to a fast-talking gambler, James Coburn (Speed). Bronson proves himself a formidable and profitable fighter, but Speed can't hold on to money because of his gambling addiction and is in constant trouble with the mob.

One thing that's amazing is that Bronson was 53 freakin' years-old when the film was made, yet physically looks better than most guys half that age. Bronson's beautiful wife, Jill Ireland, plays his love interest (as usual) and was 39 years old at the time.

Although very little is revealed in the film about Chaney's past (we know he had experience as a coal miner), it becomes fairly certain that he had a lot of experience with bare knuckle fighting. We know this because he is supremely confident of his skills despite his age. Chaney is not big or ultra-muscular, but he's fearless, calmly self-controlled, doesn't bleed easy and expertly knows how to READ other fighters. Chaney's weakness is that he's a loner and doesn't talk much, hence he NEEDS Speed to do the talkin' for him and set up matches in order to make money from his uncommon skills.

I first saw "Hard Times" two years ago and thought it was good, but I didn't quite get the 'great cult film' hoopla. Perhaps I wasn't prepared for the ugly/dirty Depression era sets and New Orleans locations; or maybe I just wasn't in the mood for a fight film. I just saw it again, however, and all I can say is, NOW I 'get' it.

"Hard Times" has numerous memorable scenes, lines and characters. I was highly entertained throughout its 90 minute runtime -- grinning, frequently busting out laughing and even clapping (huh?). Speaking of the runtime, I love it when pictures aren't needlessly overlong.

Here's one sample of some of the great dialogue: Chaney's date asks him what he does for a living. Chaney simply responds that he makes money by knocking people down. She mockingly asks, "What does it feel like to knock somebody down?" He brilliantly replies, "It makes me feel a hell of a lot better than it does him."

Although Chaney is depicted as a likable, honorable, bold and compassionate person, his downfall is that he is unable to make long-term commitments, preferring to be "free" and mysterious. [SPOILER ALERT! -- THE REMAINDER OF THIS PARAGRAPH AND THE NEXT TWO] Because of this flaw he ultimately loses his beautiful girl to someone else. He then leaves New Orleans as mysteriously as he came, albeit now a streetfighting legend and carrying a lot of cash.

The ending leaves many questions to ponder: What prompts Chaney to change his mind and try to save Speed by taking on an expert fighter from Chicago? Didn't Speed dig his own pit? Chaney himself angrily told Speed that he didn't owe him anything. Perhaps, as Chaney laid on his bed under the ceiling fan in his dump of an apartment, he realized that maybe he DID owe Speed for granting him the opportunity to utilize his talents and make money. In other words, without Speed he wouldn't have had his success. Perhaps he decided he wanted to make even MORE money in one final fight before leaving New Orleans. Possibly, it dawned on him that, although Speed is certainly to blame for his own problems, Chaney realized that he had fallen into his OWN-dug pits in the past and needed someone to help him get out. Or maybe he realized that, in all the world, he had less friends than can be counted on one hand and felt it was his duty to help Speed (and Poe) out.

Regardless of his reasons, the ending expertly shows Chaney's loyal and generous character. He may be a man of few words, but he certainly CARED about those connected to him, even if they were severely flawed addicts and con-artists. Heck, he even LOVED his cat!

[END SPOILER ALERT]

FINAL WORD: "Hard Times" is truly worthy of its cult film status. Enjoy!

I returned the one purchased in October 2006, because I ordered a VHS
at $4.99 and you sent me a DVD at over $18.00 for which you gave
me a credit.

I ordered a DVD last December at $7.99 plus $2.59 delivery which I
received, but why do I have to pay over $17.00 for it????????

1 out of 5 stars Hard Times - full screen UGH !!! .......2006-11-04

DO NOT BUY THIS DVD ! Although I throughly enjoy this movie and the characters are as good as they get in movies...Hard Times in the "full screen" format does not do this movie the justice and appreciation it deserves.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film.......2006-11-03

"Hard Times" is an excellent piece of work by director Walter Hill. The cast is excellent and it is one of the few good films Charles Bronson made with his wife Jill Irelend.

3 out of 5 stars Where is the special edition ? This is Bronson's finest moment.......2006-05-01

First of all, Columbia-Tristar released a WS and FS edition (2 sided disc) of the DVD on its initial release but reissue with a full screen only. So those interested in the title must search for the older release which contains the WS edition.

This is a great film, one of Bronson's best and also directorial debut of the great Walter Hill. Set in depression era New Orleans, where Bronson had to earn his dollar by "street fighting". James Coburn and Jill Ireland costar as his manager/promotor and love interest (Obviously) respectively.

I would like to give this DVD a full 5 stars, but with its lack of special features, I can only give 3 stars. A must have DVD though, the 2.0 mono sound is fine and the WS image is ok but deserved to be cleaned up a bit.

Now with all of the principal stars gone (Bronson, Coburn, Ireland), I am surprised that Columbia has yet to issue a special edition of this movie, while releasing several titles over and over (Fifth element, Leon The Professional, Jumanji, legend of Zorro, etc). Please issue a special edition, as this is more deserving movie. I don't think there is any special edition DVD of Bronson's movies. Not even the first Death Wish. I hope Hard Times will be the first in many special edition DVDs to be released. Remember, Charles Bronson is one of the biggest movie star in the world.

4 out of 5 stars son loves this.......2007-05-16

my 2 year old is obsessed with monster trucks and watches this at least once a day- but he'll only watch the monster truck part- the dvd is split into two segments- race cars and monster trucks. it's good, because he can totally bypass the car part and go directly to the trucks, but on the other hand, it seems like a waste of a DVD to me. i give this 4 stars, for good price and the fact that my boy LOVES it, but to me, it seems kind of cheesy and low budget.

4 out of 5 stars Great for toddlers!.......2007-02-15

My 2 1/2 year old loves the Hard Hat Harry series. This one is his favorite. I asked him what he would write and he said "I like monster trucks and race cars". I personally feel Hard Hat Harry is a little hard to handle but it is very informational and educational. Recommend for all toddlers who like to watch dvd's. Good value for the price, too.

1 out of 5 stars Hard Hat Harry race cars and monster trucks.......2006-12-30

Too much talking and going over equipment. Very little racing. I purchased for my 2 1/2 yr old nephew and he loves, loves, loves, his "cartrucks". This did not hold his interest.

4 out of 5 stars Great for preschoolers...........2006-11-08

It's quick moving and covers a variety of interests for lil' motorheads.

5 out of 5 stars Great series for youngsters!.......2005-11-10

My 4 year old has learned so much from these DVD's! We now have the entire set and he LOVES them! I think they're a bit quirky, but not so much that I mind watching with him. I'd much rather watch this than some of the stuff on television.
These series are not animated and they are educational, teaching children about real life things. The biggest thing my child has learned from these videos is safety. I just bought the set for my nephew for Christmas.

5 out of 5 stars My nephew loves these movies!.......2006-08-29

I bought this set of movies for my nephew for his 3rd birthday. He loves monster trucks, tractors, motorcycles and trains--and he loves these movies. Even my brother-in-law has enjoyed watching them with him because he learned new things about the subjects (for example, how they load the monster trucks into the tractor trailers). Each movie has two episodes (about 30 minutes per episode). You can choose which episode you want to watch. Overall, fun and informative movies.

My 22 month old son is fascinated with all things transportation so I was excited to purchase the Hard Hat Harry six-pack. It has everything! He is currently fixated on the Monster Truck video which we watch over and over but he will also watch the other videos when I force him and can't take watching Monster Trucks anymore. The videos are cheesy but entertaining. They are also educational which I like. Each video lasts about 30 minutes or so which is just short enough to keep his interest and just long enough for me to get dinner ready. I am glad that I purchased this set.

These movies are awesome. My son is 3 and he loves them. If you have a child that lose big trucks or tractors. These will be perfect for them. My 3 year old niece loves fire truck one so see it is meant for everyone. I even caught my 8 year old watching them.

Uneasy Allies Track Down an Escaped Killer OSCAR(r) nominees Burt Reynolds (Boogie Nights) and Bruce Dern (Coming Home) star in a tense Western about the uneasy alliance between a convict and a Territorial Marshal. Billy Bucklin (David Figlioli) busts out en route to Yuma Prison, so Marshal Hutchinson (Dern) has his brother-in-law, John McKay (Reynolds), released to help bring him down. Hutch offers a possible pardon for the killing McKay claims was in self-defense, and also reveals that his deputy, John's son Joshua (Seth Peterson), is tracking the dangerous man. Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) is saved from Bucklin's henchmen after her family is massacred, and doggedly joins the three searchers as they try to get him-dead or alive.

    2 out of 5 stars Great actors in a made-for-TV mediocrity.......2005-08-13

First, I love Bruce Dern and Burt Reynolds. I could watch them just sit around and talk, and in fact those scenes are the best part of the movie. Hard Ground is a very predictable western with very predictable special effects (how many dynamite blow-ups in slow motion with people flying have you seen lately?)

The young female survivor of a stage coach massacre has got "sand" and alternates between being feisty and vulnerable on a very predictable basis. The estranged son of Burt is also heroic but oversleeps on the trail of the bad guys. The two veterans and the two young people pull together in the end to a very predictable climactic shoot-em-up with a very predictable outcome. Have I said this movie is totally formulaic and predictable?

Nevertheless, Burt and Bruce are always worth the price of admission, so I'd watch it, but not expect too many surprises. Hopefully next time the producers will actually hire writers who can develop characters and throw a few surprises in to spice up the movie.

4 out of 5 stars hard to kill.......2005-08-06

Another good movie of Bruce Dern as Marshal Hutchinson still crafty as he was in the movie "Hang Them High" and that was 30 yr's ago and still he looks good and very impressive.Burt and Bruce has such a good understanding that it seems both injoyed making this movie.Burt Reynolds as John McKay who was being transfered to Yuma Prison along with David Figlioli as Billy Bucklin as the chief villian and rest of the hardend criminal's in a prison van and they breakout leaving Burt Reynolds to die in the desert without water or horse. Thats where the story starts. The Outdoor Photography is really beautiful. The sunset in the mountains is breath taking.Marshal's sister married john McKay and had a son named joshua (Seth Peterson)who was broughtup by the marshal and he becomes his deputy and a decent citizen.Joshua rescue's a Elizabeth Kennedy (Amy Jo Johnson) on the way following the tracks of escapies. Its a deadly game of Manhunt,Story is Written by a famous writer Frank Q Dobbs (Johnson County War, Streets of Laredo)It was also directed by him. I liked this movie as any other good old western.

3 out of 5 stars My kid loved it!.......2006-11-17

I bought this for my[..]who is obsessed with anything that has wheels. He has watched it over and over again, and has memorized the catchy intro songs for both sections (Trucks and Firetrucks.) His 4 yr old friend also really liked it. The acting is not sophisticated, but the footage of the actual trucks and emergency procedures kept the kids' attention. We also have the Hard Hat Harry Rescue Adventures/Police Cars, but my son has only shown moderate interest in that video.

1 out of 5 stars I would give it zero stars if possible.......2006-01-02

I bought this dvd for my 2 year old son. After one tortured viewing we threw it in the trash. To begin with, Hard Hat Harry himself is difficult to watch--- he prances about the screen for an hour. Aside from his frolicking (to be polite about it), one hardly gets to see any trucks or other equipment in which a child would be interested. When you combine this with Harry's "odd" affect and genrally irritating demeanor, you end up with a video that it unbearably difficult to watch.

2 out of 5 stars boring for my toddler.......2006-01-05

I bought this for my nearly 2 yr old son who loves trains big and small. He loves the Thomas the Tank Engine series and loves to see the train in the Baby Einstein "On the Go" DVD, but this was a total let down. He wasn't interested at all and no wonder. It is too much standing around and talking. I tried to keep the whole tape on fast forward but even then it was dull---particularly this endlessly long segment where Harry is seated in the dining car with two school aged children-- and that's it! How is that interesting? To a child who doesn't understand conversations, the banter is not entertainment. To a parent who does understand the conversations, it is pure mindless torture. I've never given anything such a poor review. I won't even bother describing more of the same with the helicopter segment. This DVD is in need of major editing if it is to appeal to little tikes.

4 out of 5 stars Son LOVES It!.......2005-08-16

My nearly 3yo son has all of these Hard Hat Harry DVDs and loves them all. I can't believe the things he learns from them. The best money I've spent. He would watch them repeatedly all day long if we let him.
