Dolemite is not a particularly competent movie--the direction (by costar D'Urville Martin) is clumsy, the performances flat, and microphones peek in from time to time (get that video letterboxed, Xenon!)--but the outrageous mix of nightclub rap, kung-fu action, and Moore's four-letter dialogue turned it into an instant urban hit and has kept it alive as a cult classic. 4.5 Dolemite-- a comedic experiance like no other.......2007-03-04

Many people might be overly critical of an otherwise enjoyable film. Definately Dolemite is not for everybody and definately not for those who only enjoy either art house films [not that it's a bad thing]. I was introduced to Dolemite while reading a know defunt hip-hop magazine. The particular issue was paying homage to Rudy Ray Moore. I decided to take the plunge and rent Dolemite from the local Blockbuster. Having Done so I can say I found the movie both entertaining and hysterical at the same time.

The comedy was very low-brow but Rudy Ray Moore gave it a certain style and grace that only few people can do. Consider also that Rudy Ray Moore was ghetto comedy before the advent of Richard Pryor. Rudy Ray Moore,alongside Paul Mooney and Red Foxx, paved the way for the type of ghetto comedy that would latter be made mainstream by Richard Pryor.

Of all the so-called blaxplotation movies I have seen thus far[I don't really like that term], I have to say this movie has a certain comedic charm that shines despite the mediocre acting,bogus martial arts,and paper thin plot. You know immediately that Dolemite is not a film that takes itself very seriously. Just a film to watch and amuse yourself with as Rudy Ray Moore intended to do so.

Just a little historical background into this film before I bore the life out of you. Most of Rudy Ray Moore's characters come from African-American folk-lore. Dolemite originally started as a urban toast in African-American communities of a outlaw type figure.

Either the best or the worst.......2007-02-13

This is either the greatest or the worst Blaxploitation film ever made. I am not sure. Unlike other films like "Foxy Brown" or "Cleopatra Jones," this movie makes no attempt to make blacks dignified upstanding citizens, rather it does the opposite like "The Mack" times a million. The Nword is dropped constantly, people refer to each other as motherf***er all the time and so on. Maybe it is more real, maybe not. It certainly is a hilariously over the top run into a world that is rarely visited in this way.

The movie's plot is thin... at worst. Dolemite is a pimpin', club owning, karate master with a legion of trollops who are also karate masters. He was also framed and sent to prison by his archrival pimpin' club owner (this one does not know king-fu as well as Dolemite though). Anyway he is released in order to, well um, stop crime. So, instead he does the opposite and beats a lot of people up. Then he has sex with some strumpets and then he talks to some druggie. He also spills a huge sack of coke on a police officer.

Anyway, the movie ends in a chaotic kung-fu battle and whatever else. The entire movie is hilarious and should be watched only because of the incredibly utile quotes. Here are some good ones:

"You rat soup eating honky motherf***er!"

"Man move over and let me pass 'fore they have to be pulling these hush puppies out your motherf***ing a**!"

Fun... well that is what the movie is. It is horribly politically incorrect. Some scenes may straight out shock a sensitive viewer, but all in all it is a fun romp through an era of funny, flamboyant hats and canes to match. Go buy it or rent it, it is always handy to have at a party where things are going too slow. I am sure 100s of drinking games can be made for this movie.

The Worst Blaxploitation Film Ever Made.......2006-11-08

Everything about this movie was wrong: the plot, the acting, the production, and Dolemite's clothes. I don't even understand why this movie is so loved. Horrible. Dolemite was greazy and disgusting and you couldn't pay me any amount of money to touch him with a 10 foot pole. I'm giving this movie 2 stars only because the fighting scenes were so awful that they were funny.

Cinematic Masterpiece.......2006-09-30

Eschewing conventional acting methodology, Rudy Ray Moore inhabits Dolemite with an unparalleled ferocity. His signature line, "I'm Dolemite, Mutha(expletive)" is delivered time and time again in a drunken slur: a brutal, but anguished, plea for sanity. To the untrained eye, it might seem like Dolemite's karate kicks are not even connecting with his foes, but this is a metaphor for the never ending conundrum of the pimp/poet/warrior. Watch for the symbolism inherent in the furry hat and pay close attention to the pants that come up to his armpits as both are integral to understanding the magnificence that is Dolemite.

Others here have mocked the presence of the boom mike. What they do not realize is that the boom mike represents The Man - ever encroaching on the brothers. Dolemite knows just how to handle the problem: a flurry of karate to moves to show those "Mutha(expletive)s" how it is done.

Highly recommended.

Only two reasons:.......2005-10-13

This movie is worth buying just for these two reasons:

1) The Hamburger Pimp (think of him as a crack-headed, nappy-haired version of Popeye's Wimpy). And he has his own theme music.

2) This movie contains the greatest single line in cinematic history.
Just as the two crooked cops (with their sideburns down to here) pull Dolemite over in a futile attempt to frame the baddest motha' around, they taunt, "You think you're so bad, Dolemite...riding around in your big fancy cars, wearing all them fancy clothes, with all of your black b*tches!" our hero snaps back with, "You forgot about the white one!"

They just don't make movies like they used two. Buy two copies, one to permanently leave in your DVD player. And the other to put under your pillow when you sleep.

first Rapping Comedian.......2004-08-01

Dolemite Rudy Ray Moore truly did something that no other Comedian had ever done&that was Rapping His Lines. he will crack you up from start to finish.the films were basic but they hit home with me&My friends.Rudy Ray Moore was a Pre Cursor to Too Short&Snoop Dogg amongest Other Cats. Rudy always cracks me up with His party Albums&Routines.

Just Old Classics.......2004-04-05

If you've ever watched MAD TV, they do some spoofs off of this series, which include many of the "problems" named in some of the above reviews.

The skit has horrible acting, silly rhymes, stupid villains, an unsteady camera, and just overall... heh, you get the point. Collector shows such as these sometimes get their "fame" on these grounds.

I cannot exactly recommend this, though =)

Must Have for Cheesy movie night.......2003-12-25

Ok I think this is really a horrible movie. The plot is the pimp drug dealer gets freed from jail to get a worse pimp drug dealer.

This is the primer for our cheesy movie night because no matter what we watch after this one it has to be better and usually is.

THe action sequences are horribly choreographed. the plot is horrendous. But somehow Dolemite seems to be abe to rhyme all his lines. This is probably not the movie for everyone and if you have never seen Dolemite before I would recommend renting it before you buy it to see if it is something you want in your collection. As for me I take the good with the bad.

This is a wonderful idea. To buy them all together not only saves money, but it will be easlier to keep together.

Only for fans of Ninja the Final Duel.......2007-02-17

SHAOLIN DOLEMITE-This movie is only for a select few. If you are a fan of the Dolemite movies then be prepared to be dissapointed. On the other hand, if you liked Ninja the Final Duel distributed by Crash Cinema, you may like this movie even more. Tai actually directed 12+ hours worth of NInja Final Duel footage! Why? Probably because this is the only project he he actually had a budget for. And instead of making it a top notch production, he used all the money on film. There are 3 or 4 different versions of this, and I heard that Soulblade may put out a box set one day. One of the great things about this movie is that we actually get to see Robert Tai in action as an actor! Tai wasn't a good director(he made a couple of classics), but he was a great choreographer and can pull all of the sweet moves off himself when acting. You can tell Robert Tai's style by the way he super speeds up the film, uses insane wirework(usually bad), and uses every trick shot you could ever think of, most you wouldn't think of though. Just like Donnie Yen used undercranking as an art form in the movies he directed, Robert Tai doesn't even care if his editing looks trashy. He considers it art. While I don't see it like that, it is still a heck of a lot of fun. If you don't know who Tai is then look for the bald monk doing all the sweet animal forms 20 minutes in. He is Lo Rei's teacher in the movie.

If you are a fan of all the old school stars in this movie like Robert Tai, William Yen, Alexander Lo Rei, and Eugene Thomas, this may appeal to you. Fans of the genre may also recognize John Ladaski and Toby Russel playing the 2 Shabazz guys. Toby Russel is now head of Rarescope UK and John Ladaski you will recognize as the bald guy who keeps running into the room during the bone dislocating scene in 'Tom Yum Goong'. I had no idea Toby Russel was such a good kicker, he really gets to show off. And did anyone notice that the Davey Crockett character just kinds of stands around during the group fights? He must have been strictly a television actor.

It is quite obvious why Rudy Ray Moore chose this movie to call his own. Robert Tai was a very odd Taiwanese filmmaker who not only used white guys to fill up spots in the cast, but puts an African-American into a very large role. Some may not understand why Eugene Thomas was cast, but he and Lo Rei always had great chemistry on screen together. The fight between them at the end is the highlight of the movie.

Also, expect more ninja tricks and more fighting than was in the Final Duel. Expect around the same amount of nudity. But, expect ALL new scenes. It is completely different from the Crash Cinema version and it also includes another lady ninja nude fighting scene. Don't grab her there!! I loved this flick, it is just not for everybody. Be sure to check it out if a nude lady ninja sounds interesting to you. This is very hard not to like if you are a bad movie fan.

The movie itself is kind of hard to watch at times. Don't expect it to make sense, just expect pure cheese that is of very good quality. I think I heard the f-word about 100 times in the first 10 minutes and I didn't even crack a smile. Every joke is just completely unbearable. The only thing that Rudy Ray Moore does is show footage of himself saying-"that is a bad mother ******". Fine with me though because this movie has so much cool stuff going on it is easy to block out Moore when he is on screen. Luckily, he only says a line every 10 minutes or so.

The new dub job is amazingly bad. Surprisingly, it ended up being very fun. The dialogue is not only completely racist and unintelligent, but it doesn't even make any sense. Seriously, NOTHING makes sense. Here is an example-"You sorry apple-headed Zulu's, let's get some fried chicken". ???

I have to point out that real kung fu fans will not like this movie, but it is possible that some will. If you didn't like Ninja the Final Duel, it is very doubtful that you will be able to find any enjoyment in this. I give this a very bias rating of 3.5/5 and an even more bias rating of 5/5 for the bonus scenes.

This version from BCI is 110 minutes long. Take out the Rudy Ray Moore parts and you have about 90 minutes of Ninja the Final Duel footage. The BCI version also has an extended scene and deleted scenes. Most are fights but 1 scene is called 'Ninja Ho and Tupac get jiggy', and you can guess what goes down(no pun intended). It all adds up to about 42 or 43 minutes of extra footage(with about 26 minutes of pure action, though half of it is that stupid bell ringing duel and just shows people falling to the ground with their ears bleeding). With BCI's version of Dolemite and the Crash Cinema version of Final Duel, this comes to a total of 3 hours and 40 minutes of the 12 hour TV series that you can easily get on DVD.

BLACK SAMURAI-Jim Kelly stars in the super cheesefest that is very hard to watch at times. The problem here is that BCI has the cut version so if you really want to see this movie, this is not the version to get. Black Samurai is a super cheapo flick with action that is so bad it is funny. 1.5/5 for the movie. 0.5/5 for the version in this 2-pack.

Better than most.......2006-08-21

First off I'm a fan of the "over-overdubbed fu" thing. Kung Pow, Iron Fist Pillage, Prisoner of 5 Boulders, and now Shaolin Dolemite.

The humor is hit and miss.. If someone mispronouncing Tupac's name would make you chuckle, even just a bit, this is for you. If the idea of a black drunken master makes you giggle, this is for you. If you can't believe there's really a fu movie with an effeminate sword-fighting-coon-skin-cap-wearing Davey Crocket, you're going to die laughing.

If you want a serious movie, run away screaming now.

The quality of the video isn't great, but it's from an old fu movie so what can ya do.. I gave this a 5 instead of a 3 or 4 because of the very very sweet extended fight scenes, which have the original chinese dialouge without subs.. Awesome stuff.

Black Samurai cracked me up.. I won't go into detail but there's an afro and a samurai involved.. how can you lose?

Bad movie heaven!

The Best Brothas in Blaxploitation Cinema!!!!.......2005-11-19

This has to be the best film combo I've seen in ages.
The almighty Dolemite Rudy Ray Moore and Jim `Black Belt Jones' Kelly in a double feature!

Shaolin Dolemite is a great film that's played for laughs.
Rudy Ray re-wrote the dialogue so the story centers around him searching for his student Tupac(Eugene Tomas).
Along the way he encounters Ninjas,Monks,the Black Drunken Master,Sam the Spliff and the Lost tribe of Shabazz.

The film was directed by Robert Tai,one of the men resposible for the 5 Venoms films.

Black Samurai is a low budget film but very fun to watch.
Jim Kelly definitely had charisma and should have stayed away from films like this.

All I can say is that if anybody wants to get a feel of what it was like on 42nd st. or the Loop `back in the day',then sit down with some popcorn and enjoy!

A Blessing for Rudy Ray Fans.......2004-04-07

Personally, I don't think there's anything quite as compelling as a good documentary, and this is a really good documentary. I've been a Dolemite fan for ages, but I knew nothing about Rudy Ray's career before the '70s, like when he first introduced the Dolemite character, or that fifty years ago he was known as R&B singer Prince Dumar.
On the surface this video would seem to appeal mostly to hardcore Rudy Ray fans, but I think it has something to offer any fan of Blaxploitation or early R&B, or for that matter anybody who's into hip-hop culture or contemporary Black comedians.
This is a great video that deserves repeated viewings.

If you liked Ninja the Final Duel, you will want to pick up this companion piece........2007-02-16

This movie is only for a select few. If you are a fan of the Dolemite movies then be prepared to be disappointed. I was expecting a new Dolemite movie, really this is a badly subbed Asian film with Rudy Ray Moore thrown in to "watch." LAME.

Very funny but some long slow scenes.......2005-01-23

This movie is so funny! The ghetto slangs used to dub over the real voices are hilarious! It has an east coast vs. west coast conflict; making a spoof out of the east coast vs. west coast thing w/ rap music. Also one of the character's name is Tu-Pac, and his character is funny as hell! I love this movie, I don't know why some people don't like it. But then again, I also love South Park, which some people find offensive rather than funny. I guess if you love South Park you'll also love this movie.

I'm not familiar with rudy ray moore but disagree that this movie is not funny-c**p. I've seen c**p-c**p and funny-c**p movies and this one is funny. Some of the kung fu is actually cool, the plot is incomprehensible, the photography appalling, the ninja ho' hilarious, the dubbing just rubbish... but if like me you're a masochist stuck 4000 miles from home with just a DvD player and a month's unlimited rental from your nearby blockbuster, then this is definitely recommended. Don't Buy It For Rudy Ray Moore!!!!!.......2004-03-21

If you're buying this film because you're a fan of Rudy Ray Moore, or you're expecting to watch another Dolemite film, skip it! This film can only be appreciated by kung fu film fans.

Shaolin Dolemite is comprised of footage that wasn't in the film released on DVD as 'Ninja The Final Duel'. Apparently the full length of 'Ninja The Final Duel' is supposed to run for over 10 hours!!! But only the edited version was released. 'Shaolin Dolemite' at least gets you an hour and a half closer (minus the Rudy Ray Moore footage) to having the full version.

This is a hilarious martial arts comedy involves 2 namesless con artists (phillip KAO AND lEUNG kAR yAN) WHO ARE ACCUSED OF PILFERING A Large shipment of gold.they then take it upon themselves 2 investigate the chief of the security bureau responsible for moving the gold (Wong Lung wei) this movie starts off kinda slow but picks up pretty quick and the last fight secne is worth the dvd itself so if u like old school kung fu wih crazy styleys such as horse fist and dragon fist check ths movie out!

Three top kung fu stars in below-average entry.......2003-07-04

Despite the presence of three strong kung fu stars (Philip Ko, Leung Kar Yan, Wang Lung Wei), FEARLESS DRAGONS (real title: TWO ON THE ROAD, 1980) is just a bit too comical and lighthearted to please hardcore kung fu fans. However, it's worth seeing almost entirely for the last ten minutes when two of the stars take on the third in a splendid no-holds-barred battle shot at a roadside clearing. Philip Ko (aka Kao Fei) and Leung Kar Yan play two drifters who wind up, in a most contrived manner, working together to try and track down a huge sum of stolen money collected for refugees by a local merchant (Wang Lung Wei). There is more than meets the eye to all three of these characters and, in the case of the heroes, crucial information is withheld until the very end that would have explained their actions. Without that info, there's little reason to understand their motivations. It would have been more suspenseful if we-the audience--knew more than the characters do. Genuine suspense is sacrificed for a cheap surprise late in the film. The poor quality edition available on DVD doesn't help a film that's already shoddily produced and badly photographed. However, the three stars are all in great form and their fans will rank this as a minor effort but worth seeing anyway.

And in this fight I witnessed THE ALLTIME COOLEST KUNG FU STYLE I HAVE EVER SEEN.

So Hwang Jang Lee(Wong Cheng Li) stars as the 9th? prince. Can't remember what # he was but there weren't any other princes so it doesn't matter. Now if the final fight would have been your normal crappy fight, this would have gotten a 2/5. But since it freaking blew me away at the end, it easily gets it's four stars. Hoi mang saves the prince from an assasination early in the movie and this leads to many comic moments and then of course a mster training the student to become deadly enough to beat the super secret style that Hwang posesses. There is actually a lot more to this story, but just seems to drag on when they are trying to explain it. But the story will keep you into it since it is WAY better than a godfrey ho or thomas tang movie. So at the end of the film(luckily I was awake) it actually picks up a little bit. Hoi mang(grey haired kid with scar from hellz windstaff) puts on a true display of his awesome acrobatic abilities in his training sequence. His master isn't the greatest fighter. But please, please, please stick around for the final fight. Truly one of the coolest things I ever seen in cinema history.

The xenon wutang collection version is fine. Picture quality is a bit poorer than normal and fulscreened of course, but still very watchable. The bonus fight scenes have 2 good ones.

CAN SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME IF THEY KNOW OF A WIDESCREENED VERSION OF THIS ON VHS OR DVD? PLEASE ONLY PUT IT ON HERE IF YOU ACTUALLY HAVE VIEWED THAT VERSION AND NOT JUST HEARD ABOUT IT.

5 Stars For Film - I Don't Know The Quality Of This DVD.......2003-06-22

I've got the World Video DVD version of this film. It's pan and scan, English dubbed, but the image is nice and clear. The only beef I have is the authoring was poorly done because the image freezes for a couple of seconds as the DVD switches chapters. Also, at about the half way mark, the chapter count resets to 1, which is strange.
If you've seen Hell'z Windstaff, which features both Meng Hoi and Hwang Jang Lee, than you'll get a good idea of the pacing of the fight coreography. It's nice and fast (not Jackie Chan 80's fast, but fast enough), and doesn't rely on undercranking. The story is pretty the usual Shaolin against Manchu fare. I didn't like the weapons fighting scene towards the end which had Lung Fei and some other guy up against the protagonist Meng Hoi - I thought it was too slow. But the finale is awesome. Also, there aren't as many fight scenes as Hell'z Windstaff, but there are enough to keep the viewer interested.
A great old school flick with great fight coreography that is real time rather than sped up or using frame cutting to speed up the fights. Meng Hoi is a very agile, acrobatic martial artist. Too bad he took a back seat in the 80's by doing coreography planning rather than acting and fighting.

Buddha Assassinator.......2001-06-02

Hwang Jang Lee again plays the villian in this martial arts classic. Unreal Fights, and Some Very impressive styles showcased in this great flik. In one word, Intense!! A must have.
