Before The Wild Bunch, there was The Professionals, Richard Brooks's marvelous ode to friendship, loyalty, and disillusionment. It may not have the stylistic bravado or fatalistic doom of the legendary Sam Peckinpah film, but Brooks's storytelling is simple and steady and just as insightful. The difference is Brooks is a lot more optimistic. Lee Marvin and Burt Lancaster are buddies who have drifted into oblivion after fighting together in the Mexican Revolution. Marvin, the principled loyalist and munitions expert, lost his wife and his heart. Lancaster, the dynamite expert and unprincipled adventurer, keeps losing his pants. They team up with wrangler Robert Ryan and archer Woody Strode to rescue the beguiling Claudia Cardinale, who has been kidnapped by their old revolutionary buddie Jack Palance. So it's back into bloody Mexico they go on a "mission of mercy" for railroad tycoon Ralph Bellamy, who's paying handsomely for the return of his wife.

But nothing is what it seems in this exciting, existential adventure, which was beautifully shot by Conrad Hall. Sarcastic quips, philosophical musings, and heart-rending reversals underlie Brooks's humanistic sentiments. These are tired, world-weary men who somehow find the strength and the will to pull together for the sake of love and commitment. Through it all, Brooks seems to be lamenting a decline in professionalism much deeper than his story. He's decrying Hollywood and the society at large, anticipating Peckinpah's later strategy. --Bill Desowitz

5 out of 5 stars The Professionals.......2007-07-02

Brooks's self-penned, high-energy Western, set in the waning years of the Mexican Revolution in 1917, is as gritty and colorful a horse drama as you could ask for. The teaming of Marvin and Lancaster, playing Raza's disenchanted ex-amigos, works brilliantly, while Strode and Ryan offer fine support as talented sidekicks. Italian bombshell Cardinale, in her first English-speaking role, provides plenty of fiery va-va voom, too, especially in league with Palance's rough-riding Raza, who proves to be quite a romantic himself. Filmed on location in Nevada and enhanced by Conrad Hall's exquisite cinematography, "The Professionals" is a rousing, thoughtful action movie that deals with questions of money versus morality, and the last gasp of noble frontier idealism.

5 out of 5 stars Men who will endure.......2007-06-21

Great, straight, linear narrative. Clear and uncluttered. Immaculate camera-work sweeping over a merciless terrain. Tough, rugged, dauntless men. Brave and beautiful women --- Claudia and Maria are worth far more than $100,000 each. No weirdos, no weeping (only a little female tear, quickly brushed away); and the only narcotics are traditional and ancient --- honest, old-fashioned hooch and cheroots. Do or die: with no foul language, a smattering of folksy truths and food for thought. All the twisty issues resolved the way they should be. Perfect dialogue, delivered with power and conviction. Just masterful, no-nonsense telling of an unusual story: a heist with a difference. At the end we know who the good guys are, and only the bad guy is a true bastard. This is nostalgia for the way it was, and what we could do with more of. Buy and digest at leisure. With pleasure.

5 out of 5 stars The Professionals - A classic that gets sweeter with age.......2006-12-30

The Professionals is a must have in any Western DVD based collection. Strong actors backing up a stout story that is filled with action, adventure and humor. Aside from that, its also strong in its portrayal in themes of friendship, trust and just flat out ironic consequences that are fueled by the common strands of greed and lies that often find themselves intertwined within stories stemming from the western genre.

Filmed in some parts of Death Valley in 1966, The Professionals is a story that takes place in 1917. A wealthy individual named Grant hires a group of men to rescue his kidnapped wife from a desperado named Raza. This particular group of men are mercenaries of sorts, each possessing a viable trade to apply in their mission, which, if successful, will garner each of them $10,000. Hollywood standout Lee Marvin plays Rico, a stalwart gunslinger that joins up along with a witty munitions expert named Bill Dolworth (played by Burt Lancaster). Robert Ryan plays horse trainer Hans Ehrengard and when you throw in a scout and longbow warrior in Jake Sharp (played by Woody Strode) you have all the ingredients for a team of men ready to take on the searing desert and all the dangers it can throw at them.

The movie is coaxed with fine dialogue that pushes the character development to another level. Some of the men once fought with Raza, and find it hard to believe that he would kidnap Grant's wife (played by the lovely Claudia Cardinale). Arguments abound on their trip as human nature battles instincts and logic all in a fine mesh of right and wrong, do or die battle plan. Setbacks abound as we follow the men to their destination with Raza. It won't be easy, the desert is grueling, and around every boulder and through every mountain pass, their problem solving skills as well as their sanity for what they are risking for the cash often comes into question.

Jack Palance plays Raza, and does so with the intensity and leadership that is required for such a character. Another plus about this movie is the ingenuity that is used throughout some of the fight scenes. There is much more substance to it in terms of "thinking" than simply having men alternate pot-shots at each other from across the face of a boulder.

When the showdown happens, there is a startling discovery that not everything is as it appears, and soon the group of men who are to take Grant's wife back to him are suddenly met with yet another obstacle to negotiate.

I'm not an expert when it comes to reviewing Western Classics, but I have to say I absolutely loved The Professionals. A superb story with great acting as well as an authentic desert landscape makes it a gem of a movie. The special features section of the DVD is also fun as we get to go behind the scenes and listen to interviews with the cast and learn more about the efforts of fine filmmaking that made "The Professionals" a Western Classic.

4 out of 5 stars A strong flavored Western!.......2006-11-08

'The Professionals' is a greatly entertaining film, excitingly directed by Richard Brooks who makes its action sequences startlingly real allowing his stars full scope in developing their characters...

There is some nice cinematography in the movie... The Mexican countryside is a vast place, and we see the beauty of what is otherwise miles of desert...

The motion picture takes place before World War I, during the bloody time period of the Mexican Revolution, when Pancho Villa and other colorful rebel chieftains led their people in the fight against oppression and freedom...

The film is about four men of sharp instinct, men who live by their abilities and expertise: Ryan, the quiet horseman who can kill 'bandidos' but he can never shoot a fine stallion; Strode, the black giant, can hide all his feelings, but his companions can absolutely rely on him... Marvin, the ex-soldier who still wears an army hat, keeps his opinions on life but his code is incorruptible; Lancaster is clearly an adventurer without principles, but always fit for immediate action...

They may all be unrefined and unsociable but they take pride in being professionals: Burt Lancaster is a good-humored speculator, expert with dynamite; Lee Marvin is a gunnery expert and tactician, a fine demonstrator of new automatic weapons; Robert Ryan, an ex-cavalry man, a cattle boss and a wrangler, and Woody Strode, a dependable scout and tracker, specialist with rifle, rope and long bow... Their job is to go into Mexico for a mission of mercy, rescuing a kidnapped wife...

The expedition across the border is enormously dangerous but Ralph a millionaire rancher (Ralph Bellamy) believes that few daring men with great expertise and an adequate motive could get him what he seeks... He also knows that Lee Marvin fought for Pancho Villa and came face-to-face with Jesus Raza (Jack Palance), the bloodiest cutthroat in Mexico, the brutal kidnapper...

The four men make their uncertain way to the fortress of Raza... Their understanding of the country and the people, and their experience with arms and strategy allow them to locate the attractive young woman... They attack the camp at night and destroy all its strategic positions... Suddenly, thrown into the middle of a shoot-out, they are captured by an unexpected event...

'The Professionals' is about few men tempered like steel... Men who have learned the code of professionalism... Claudia Cardinale feels right in the role, her character is about a woman brought to life through her exposure to righteous struggle...

The most horrifying sequence of sound and fury in the film occurs when Raza's revolutionary army attacks a train, and retaliates against government troops... The captain who led the attack orders the hanging of the two officers and shoots the surviving soldiers...

Ryan (witnessing the scene) shows his turbulent emotions toward Raza's brutality... But Lancaster explains the motives... The men on the train were 'experts at torture' who had raided a whole village... burning the town and killing their people... The explanation partly satisfies Ryan... Lancaster clarifies: 'Maybe there's only one revolution since the beginning... The good guys against the bad guys... The question is, who're the good guys?'

With three Academy Award nominations for Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Cinematography and a first-rate cast, the motion picture is a strong flavored star Western, quietly humorous, delivering what viewers want from any haunting and beautiful film... Give it a look.. You'll be glad you did.

Description

Professional Massage Therapy has long been a secret to the general public but now the secrets are revealed through this video. Our video class is taught by a massage therapist instructor with over 20 years of teaching who prepares massage students to take state certification tests. While each state has different certification or registration procedures for therapists, the principles and knowledge are the same no matter where you go.

This video shows you what you've always wanted to know. See what up until now could only be seen by enrolling in a professional massage therapy school taking many months and several hundreds of dollars in fees. We bring the hidden techniques of massage therapy to you for use in the comfort of your own home. You can even watch this instructional video over and over again to improve and perfect on your massage therapy technique.

Massage therapy has been around for hundreds of year but only recently has medical science played a role in the field. We can now medically explain the benefits of massage and understand the cause and effect relationship between massage and health. This video explores the medical reasoning behind massage therapy to give a broader, more comprehensive understanding.

The Massage for Professionals video starts where the Basic Massage video leaves off giving instruction on everything from strokes, techniques and pressure points to anatomy, physiology and muscle/bone structure. This video gives the viewer a great understanding of the physiological principles behind massage. With that understanding, the viewer can combine that knowledge with knowledge of basic techniques to be a very successful professional or someone who gives fantastic back rubs.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Potty Whisper!.......2007-07-04

I recently stumbeled upon the underground world of "EC" or elimination communication and this DVD was able to explain much of that technique to my partner who doesn't like to read as much. For those that aren't too framiliar yet, Potty Whispering is based on the logical thought that you can totally notice when any infant (like my newborn) is ready or starting to go to the bathroom. Instead of deficating in the diaper as usual, the technique teaches how to eliminate over a toilet, potty, etc.

I think this method is great. I am a new mom from NJ, (5 day old as of July 4th 2007) and caught my daughter's first poop today. I am using disposable diapers like most people, and consider this a "part-time" trial for now - which they teach in the tapes and books.

The way I see "part-time" is, even if you "catch" one poop and save ONE diaper, that's one less to buy, and one less to send to a landfill. If you like this tape, you might also like to buy "Diaper Free Baby."

5 out of 5 stars Seeing is Believing..........2007-05-17

It's one thing to read about infant pottying in theory. It's another to see it in action. That's the value of this video. I showed it to a friend of mine, who was convinced that it was too much trouble, yet interested to know 'the basics.' Shortly after viewing the first three sections of this video, her 3 month old daughter began to fuss and I suggested she try to pee her. And guess what? The mom was truly impressed and surprised when her baby peed into a potty for the very first time! It was so simple. Watching this video will help any parent learn the basics, and probably inspire them to give it a try! The interviews with professionals provide interesting research and commentary, and the portraits of different families give an in depth look at particular circumstances and special cases. Not only is this video an excellent learning tool, it is beautifully put together, chock full of charming footage of babies and families, with fun, upbeat music as accompaniment. It's not just a how to, or why to, it's a testiment to the love and warmth that develops between parent and child when potty training is done in this gentle way. Thus, it is a valuable tool for all parents who have young children.

5 out of 5 stars Very Informative and Inspirational.......2007-02-23

I have used both of Laurie Bouke's books to learn more about the process of Elimination Communication (ie: Potty Whispering, Infant Potty Training, Natural Infant Hygeine) and have loved them. This DVD is just as great. When I watched it, I was in process of succesfully "EC-ing" my 9 month old. The video was very validating and entertaining. If you're a sceptic, or if you're a veteran "EC-er", I highly reccomend this DVD. Check it out!

5 out of 5 stars Who knew? (That babies can do this).......2007-02-22

When I first heard of EC, I was skeptical. However, I liked the idea that my baby might get by without a diaper rash and would be out of diapers as soon as possible (typically by 25 months.) I added the books "Infant Potty Training" by Laurie Boucke and "Diaper Free: The Gentle Wisdom of Natural Infant Hygiene" by Ingrid Bauer to my prenatal reading list. What they said made sense and my husband and I decided we would try EC when our baby was born. WOW! I am so glad we went down this path.

This dvd is helpful for parents who are first starting out. Reading a book, looking at still photos, and joining online groups is nothing like seeing it in action. There's so much information in the dvd that, if I were inexperienced, I'd probably watch it a gazillion times (along with reading the books and joining the online groups.) What is most helpful is seeing so many different ways of working with so many different ages of babies and toddlers. There's no one right way, there's a different right way for each baby at each stage of their infancy and toddlerhood, and this dvd lets you see quite a number of different styles.

As someone who's almost 14 months into the process, I was encouraged by the scenes of older toddlers. It's so easy to get lost in where you are today that you forget the end result is an independent child. It was also fun to see how our style compares to that of other families. The little boy just waking up from a nap and holding his pee until he was given the cueing sound could have been my son. The woman from Australia made sewing pants for her baby look really easy. Then there's the scene of the young toddler ec'ing her doll. That had to be the cutest scene in the dvd.

For anyone uncertain if they want to undertake EC, the process is simple. Watching the dvd will not only reinforce the basics, but it will show you the subtleties. How do you hold a 1 week old? How does a toddler sign "potty?" What clothing, equipment, and bedding facilitate EC? Then there's the big question-why would anyone want to use this method? You get to meet a lot of different people to find out why and how they utilize EC. Additionally, if you're like me, watching the dvd will greatly reduce the fear at trying something you've never even seen done before.

The EC process:
1. Make the cueing sound (typically "pssss") whenever your baby pees or poops. They quickly associate the sound with the action.

2. Watch your baby for any signs they need to go. Not all babies will give cues. Sometimes you have to go by intuition. In our case, we've gone by timing. We've been at this for over a year and only timing has been successful for us. (Although yesterday, 5 days shy of 14 months, he actually used the hand signal 4 times to indicate he had to pee or poop! Today hasn't been so good, though. Typical up and downs of toddler learning.)

3. If you think your baby has to go, take them to the potty place and make the cueing sound. The potty place could be a bowl, an infant potty, the toilet, or the backyard flowers. If they have to go, they will. If it's not time, you try again later.

4. Relax. Don't plan on 100% success. This is not about "potty training." This is about taking care of your infant's needs in a healthful, economical, environmentally friendly way while you are also teaching them about their bodies.

One of the chief criticisms of this technique is that the parents do all the work. Of course they do. These are babies. They are incapable of taking off clothing, undoing diapers, wiping themselves, etc. Parents do all the work in standard American potty training. But they do it for a lot longer than people who EC. My son isn't even 14 months and he signed to me that he needed to poop. He went in the toilet and I used 1 wipe to clean him up. Yes, I did all the work, but he's the one who initiated it. I'd say he will be totally independent years before most of his peers. Also, he's never had a diaper rash and I doubt if he'll ever get one.

I've been so vocal about EC that a number of families I know have tried it. Most have done so on a part-time basis. They are keeping their babies aware of their bodies while living very busy lives.

I have been giving the Sears "The Baby Book" as a baby shower gift. I will now also give this dvd. Not all families will choose this method, but at least those I know will have the information should they decide to go this way. This dvd would also be great for skeptical relatives. There are so many families and medical professionals and so many babies who are just doing their thing. It really lets you see this is a gentle, baby-friendly way of taking care of an infant's basic needs.

This dvd provides info on local or online groups and lists various online retailers specializing in EC. For more information, you can also go to diaperfreebaby. It's a dot org site.

This video is very pixelated and whomever edited is obviously not very professional. However, the content is impeccable and very well explained. If you can tolerate the crappy production, it's worth every penny.

I really like my Therapist and I knew he was going to have a birthday coming up so I seached all over on Amazon and I came across this well put together Massage Therapy for Professionals and he praised my selection for weeks. He told me he was learning new strokes in back problems and said he was going to recommend it to his buddies.

5 out of 5 stars Just by chance.......2006-04-15

I just happened across this series of dvd's in a search on google. I have some background in massage therapy, something I did in college as a job while studying for my present job. It's been 15 years since I practiced it last and wanted to refresh my memory and techniques. I'm glad I did. This dvd did a wonderful job of refreshing not only techniques and strokes, but the physiological aspect of massage. It really triggered some forgotten memories. Thanks for the trip!

5 out of 5 stars I bought as a package and am glad I did !!.......2004-11-12

Thanks guys (or gals) for putting these two DVD's together! (Basic Massage Therapy and Massage Therapy for Pro) I loved them both. It's great to have these to refer to and remind myself of some of the techniques that I forget from time to time. I love reflexology and these help me with that too! Having them in the pack saved me money - but I would have bought them separately anyway. I also bought a combo package as a gift for a dear friend who keeps borrowing mine. This way she'll have her own!!! <smile>

5 out of 5 stars Five Stars for a Great DVD.......2003-10-19

This DVD takes you briefly into the skeletal system, the muscular system and helps you review the lymphyotic system as well.

I was extremely pleased with the approach that prouducers used to go over the way to give a professional, relaxing, theraputic, healthful massage.

As a professional massage therapist in California, I have clients who want to understand what I do and how I do it. I have a couple of these DVD's on hand for them on a "lend" basis. They watch it and then use what they learn on their spouses as a treat.

Reflexology is another wonderful part that they gain from this DVD as well.

I've found that by sharing my knowledge, I've kept many clients happy and coming back for more of my magic touch!

Thanks for the information and your DVD.

This is more like an advertisment to get you to sign up with an online poker site than teaching you how to play... I had recently purchased David Sklansky's other DVD called Limit Holdem Poker which improved my game over night, so I thought I give this one a try too, but this one was a bust!
