Smart casting and sensible plotting make Behind Enemy Lines an above-average military thriller. Perfectly timed to bolster patriotism, the film is partly set (during a hypothetical "day after tomorrow") on the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Carl Vinson, which was on alert status in the Persian Gulf when this film was released. Proving his versatility as an unconventional movie star, Owen Wilson plays a navy navigator who is shot down over Bosnia during a reconnaissance mission. Pursued by rebel Serbian forces, Wilson must fight for survival while his commanding officer (Gene Hackman) plots a daredevil rescue. After a successful career in TV commercials, Irish director John Moore makes a promising feature debut on Slovakian locations, borrowing a few techniques from Saving Private Ryan while adding impressive flourishes of his own. The gung-ho ending's a foregone conclusion, but it works like a charm after the movie's exciting game of cat and mouse. --Jeff Shannon

If you've never seen an aviation movie before in your entire life, you'll be blissfully ignorant of the fact that Memphis Belle shamelessly (and yet gloriously) incorporates just about every cliché in the flight-movie handbook. If you're a big fan of aviation movies--especially movies about World War II bomber crews--you'll be glad that the genre's clichés have been handled with such professional flair. As it follows the crew of a B-17 bomber on its final and most dangerous mission over Germany, Memphis Belle may be little more than a slick and highly authentic presentation of familiar thrills and characters, but it's a rousing piece of entertainment. Featuring an ensemble cast of fresh faces who've since enjoyed thriving careers (including Billy Zane, Sean Astin, Eric Stoltz, D.B. Sweeney, and Harry Connick Jr.), the movie exists as a fitting tribute to the men who fought and often died in the air over hostile territory. It's the Hollywood version of a 1944 wartime documentary made by legendary director William Wyler (whose daughter served as one of this film's producers), and as such it's a bit contrived and melodramatic. And yet, this exciting movie is almost certain to grab and hold your attention, offering an honorable reminder of the bravery and integrity that were crucial ingredients of any bomber's crew. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Sentimental, But It Works!.......2007-06-17

1990's "Memphis Belle" may be sentimental, corny, and cliched, but as a movie about bomber crews flying dangerous routes over Nazi Germany, it works wonderfully well. Only the most cynical of viewers will failed to be moved by its simple but effective story.

"Memphis Belle" is based on the story of a real-life B-17 about to finish 25 combat missions, after which its crew will be eligible to rotate home from the war in Europe. Their final mission will be a daylight run over Dresden, a heavily defended target. An ensemble cast headed by Matthew Modine as the sober young pilot-in-charge goes through its flight preparations, while a series of short vignettes introduces the viewer to the individual members of the crew. The stand-out young cast includes Eric Stoltz as a radio operator with aspirations of being a poet; Tate Donovan as the cocky, attention-seeking co-pilot; Billy Zane as a bombardier who is about to pay a price for living a lie; DB Sweeney as the flak-happy navigator; and in a superb cameo, jazz musician Harry Connick, Jr, as the tail gunner. Connick, by the way, does a impressive job on an improvised version of "Danny Boy" early in the movie.

The action involving the aircrew is nicely balanced by a subplot on the ground, as a war-weary Bomber Group commander (earnestly played by David Straitharn) must reel in a cynical public affairs officer (John Lithgow). Their confrontation provides context to what is happening to the Memphis Belle in the air.

The final mission turns into a nightmare of flak, enemy fighters, casualties, and mechanical failures, as the crews ends up nursing a stricken bomber towards its home field in England. The final minutes of the movie should leave no viewer unmoved.

This movie is highly recommended to those looking for an entertaining and fairly realistic movie on the bomber campaign against Hitler's Germany.

5 out of 5 stars The key to enjoying this movie..........2007-05-21

...is to realize that, although no single plane and crew experienced everything that's shown happening to the Memphis Belle in this film -- and certainly not on a single mission -- nevertheless, everything that is shown undoubtedly happened to many, many planes and crews during the long bombing campaign in the European theater. To watch this movie is to get a small taste of the fear, tragedy, and triumph experienced by those brave men (and boys).
Several years ago, I stood in my back yard and watched a vintage P-51 Mustang (the "little friends" of this movie) roar overhead at low altitude on its way to an air show at a nearby airport. I was stunned at the raw power of that 60 year old aircraft, which made today's small Cessna-type aircraft seem like mosquitos in comparison. Watching "Memphis Belle", I couldn't help but feel that the 40s were in some way the peak of manned flight. Today we have supersonic or hypersonic flight, and are beginning to see pilot-less combat aircraft. It seems to me that none of them compare to those big, lumbering, steel and plexiglass B-17s and their young, inexperienced crews.

5 out of 5 stars Good Show.......2007-03-24

I liked this movie. The airplanes in this movie are getting rare, and I like the historical aspect of the movie. We should all remember what those men did for our freedom. I would not have wanted to be in their shoes. I am thankful to be an American!

5 out of 5 stars A Big Hit for the Elementary School Boys Crowd.......2007-03-23

We purchased this DVD for our friends' son's 7th birthday. He is obsessed with airplanes. He usually fast-forwards movies to get to any scene with a fighter jet. This is his favorite movie, so of course he loved the gift. We haven't been able to find it locally for sale, only for rent. I would recommend this to anyone who has a son/nephew/etc who is into airplanes.

3 out of 5 stars Could have been better..........2007-02-23

I wish I could give this movie a better rating but I saw it on cable a little while ago and it set me thinking. My problem is that the movie is a bit too prosaic and formulaic. It suffers from a weak script. Most of the crew are the clean-cut, all American boys from the movies of the war era and, as such, they lack definition, individuality and some credibility. The song by Harry Connick seems like a gratuitous addition. Having said that, it was good to see some of the old warbirds in the air and the movie gains life when the mission actually begins.
I took my Dad to see the movie when it was in the theaters. He was an waist gunner on a B-17 in 1943 and I was interested in his reaction. He said he'd seen most of the instances portrayed except the mid-air collision. He also managed to tell me a few more things over the years before he passed: like the time a plane blew up on the ground while being loaded for a mission or the time their tail gunner bailed out after the plane was hit and the communications link was shattered. He also saw men fall to their knees in tears out of fear of the upcoming mission. Anyone who has stood in a B-17 and seen the thin sheet aluminum and bracing that was their protection will realize how naked these men must have felt. They deserve a grittier and more nuanced homage than this film gives them.
It's not that it's a bad film; it's better than the juvenalia of the more recent Pearl Harbor but lacks the strength that made the series Band of Brothers so exceptional.

A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.

George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23

David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.

Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.

Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.

One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time

3 out of 5 stars Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13

Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09

A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.

4 out of 5 stars Good movie.......2007-03-30

This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.

2 out of 5 stars Very ordinary..........2007-03-23

This was a critically lauded film, so when I went in, I had high expectations. Roger Ebert himself called it a masterpiece. I saw it, and it was certainly interesting, but I immediately forgot about it right after I left the theater. There really isn't much depth here. It's more reminiscent of getting a quick rush from something, then after it wears off, you don't even remember how you felt afterwards. I remember a scene where a cow is blown up, but other than that, it's hard for me to remember anything about it. It ultimately was very ordinary, and not a really deep film about war.

Scorned by reviewers when it came out, this concentrated dose of commando death-dealing to legions of Nazi machine-gun fodder has acquired a cult over the years. In 1968 Clint Eastwood was just getting used to the notion that he might be a world-class movie star; Richard Burton, whose image had been shaped equally by classical theater training and his headline-making romance with Elizabeth Taylor, was eager to try on the action ethos Eastwood was already nudging toward caricature. Alistair MacLean's novel The Guns of Navarone had inspired the film that started the '60s vogue for World War II military capers, so he was prevailed on to write the screenplay (his first). The central location, an impregnable Alpine stronghold locked in ice and snow, is surpassing cool, but the plot and action are ultra-mechanical, and the switcheroo gamesmanship of just who is the undercover double (triple?) agent on the mission becomes aggressively silly. --Richard T. Jameson

Clint Eastwood Collection: Where Eagles Dare One of the all time best adaptations of Allistair MacLean's novels to a a movie. Superb actors help to carry off the story line.

I thoroughly enjoy this movie every time I watch it. Unfortunately most of today's movies adapted from books start good and end up getting totally off the story line for "Dramatic effect".

You really should this suspense filled movie about 7 allied spies dropped behind enemy lines to "rescue" a capture American General from the German Intelligence services.

5 out of 5 stars "The world is grown so bad, that wrens make prey where eagles dare not perch".......2007-04-10

I love the heck out of this movie. It's probably one of my favorite action movies, and a bit of a guilty pleasure when I talk about it to some of my friends. I first caught it on TCM while in high school, and I was blown away at first not by the action but by the scenery. This film probably has the best cinematography of any action film, with the stunning shots of the alps and the well done set of the Eagle's Nest. (I highly suggest you watch this widescreen - I've seen it formatted, and it doesn't do the movie any justice) At first I didn't think much of it, but I got the DVD of it for Christmas last year, and watching it again after 6+ years was even better than the first time.

The story entails a group of MI6 operatives heading into the "Castle of the Eagles," a German fortress atop a mountain that can only be reached by eagle. (or a handy ride up in a transport attached to wire) They are after an American general who has the plans for opening the second front, (ie D-Day) and know the Germans want to get the plans out of him. Accompanied by an American Ranger, Lt. Schaffer, (Clint Eastwood) and led by Major Smith (Richard Burton) they quickly find out that someone among them is a double agent working for the Germans. The plot thickens from there as Schaffer and Smith sneak into the base and try to complete their mission.

"Where Eagles Dare" is one of those action films that has it all. Car chases, shoot outs, intrigue, exploding cars, explosions in general, helicopters (no helicopter crashes though) and a lot of dead Nazis. It also has a decent script working for it. It may have not won any Academy Awards at the time, but it has enough plot twists to keep you interested. It also has some great characters - Major Smith, in particular, is a great character. He seems to have a way out of every sticky situation, and knows how to play his enemy. Even Clint Eastwood's Schaffer character has some wits about him, even if he's just a more shoot-em-first alternative to Smith's more calculating persona.

Sure, like other action movies there are a lot of things you are supposed to ignore. Like how a bunch of people who jump into freezing alpine water come out not shivering a bit and are dry a few minutes later. Or maybe when when Clint Eastwood uses two submachine guns at once and kills a large group of Germans. You might even have to forgive some of the corny German accents the SS cast bears. But when all is said and done you're very forgiving of the film, and learn to just enjoy yourself. If you want to see World War II era action at its very best, look no more than "Where Eagles Dare."

4 out of 5 stars Burton and Eastwood in a Action Classic.......2007-04-04

1968's "Where Eagles Dare" paired veteran thespian Richard Burton and up-and-coming young actor Clint Eastwood in a classic action thriller adapted from Alistair MacLean's bestselling novel of the same name. MacLean was prevailed upon to write the screenplay, and the movie sticks reasonably close to its namesake's storyline.

An American General who is a principal planner for D-Day is shot down over Bavaria in the German Alps. The leader of British Intelligence, Admiral Rawlins, decides to mount a hasty rescue mission using a small group of his best agents, led by Major John Smith (played by Burton), and augmented by an American OSS agent (played by Eastwood). The group is parachuted into Bavaria disguised as German Alpen Korps troops, there to storm a castle where the captured American General is being held. It turns out that one or more of the agents may be a double agent, leading to a complicated game of double-cross in which Burton and Eastwood must extract the general from the castle and make their way to a rendezvous at an airfield while evading what seems like a signficant portion of the German Army.

The plot, like the novel, lacks some of the emotional depth of MacLean's earlier efforts but more than makes up for it with a steady stream of thrilling action sequences, each more improbable than the last. A solid cast of British actors and Eastwood are more than equal to portraying the commandoes and their secret helpers in Bavaria, delivering punchy ironies while machinegunning the bad guys. MacLean managed to preserve the best plot twist from the novel for the final scene.

This movie is highly recommended to fans of Clint Eastwood and his action movies. Fans of Alistair MacLean will find it a much better than average adaption of one of his novels.

The Great Escape image of Steve McQueen (as "The Cooler King") astride his motorcycle has entered silver-screen iconography, alongside Brando on his bike from The Wild One. Based on a true story about a group of POWs who mount a daring breakout from a supposedly inescapable Nazi prison camp, this rousing and suspenseful WWII epic features an all-star cast, including James Garner, Richard Attenborough, Charles Bronson, Donald Pleasence, James Coburn, and David McCallum. The DVD also includes a 24-minute documentary about the making of the film. --Jim Emerson

Description

In 1943, the Germans opened Stalag Luft North, a maximum-security prisoner-of-war camp, designed tohold even the craftiest escape artists. In doing so, however, the Nazis unwittingly assembled the finest escape team in military historybrilliantly portrayed here by Steve McQueen, James Garner, Charles Bronson and James Coburnwho worked on what became the largest prison breakout ever attempted. One of the most ingenious and suspenseful adventure films of all time, The Great Escape is a masterful collaboration between director John Sturges (The Magnificent Seven), screenwriters James Clavell (Shogun) and W.R. Burnett (Little Caesar), and composer Elmer Bernstein. Based on a true story, The Great Escape is epic entertainment that "entertains, captivates, thrills and stirs" (Variety).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Movies Ever Made.......2007-02-24

The Great Escape is my favorite movie of all time. It is an excellant movie and follows the book it is based on very well. This movie shows the courage, strength and fighting spirit of these men. And it is truely dedicated to the fifty who were murdered.

5 out of 5 stars Classic.......2007-02-06

What else can I say about a classic? McQueen's motorcycle jump is the unforgettable part for me.

5 out of 5 stars Heroes abound.......2007-01-14

The Great Escape portrays the heroism of prisoners never giving into their captors and the pompous honor of Nazi Germany. The group becomes a monkey wrench at all turns determined to send their adversary to the Russian front. My only complaint is that it is shown in letterbox format which saps some of the power of the story. Wasn't this picture worth a full screen format? But this is probably par for the epics of that era. The stars had to carry the load and be bigger in life even though you are peeking through a window. Steve McQueen was a man of epic tales and this one does not fail to deliver. Even doomed to failure he never gives up. Resist with every last breath was the motto of the prisoners. Guile and guts served them well and in the end Germany was defeated even if only in small part by the escapades of the escapees. Grit abounds through the fiber of every man sworn to serve the Allied forces. We owe these men a debt we can never repay, but always respect. It takes courage to put your own well being second behind the cause. Unfortunately we have seldom triumphed in glory since that time. This war made sense while successors seemed steeped in politics. Something a normal person has a hard time understanding. Let's just hope that global war was put to rest with this one. We can look back on the Great Escape with admiration and gratitude. But we can never repay what was sacrificed by these men.

4 out of 5 stars A vast, multi-star war epic with great score by Elmer Bernstein..........2007-01-02

'The Great Escape' had the advantage of a fine source, and a fine script... Each actor realizes his potential in a very detailed manner, giving a feeling lost in the actual cinema...

Sturges is careful with the pace in the first half, allowing the escape plans develop slowly... Humor, excitement and human drama are wonderfully blended, and smartly underscored by Elmer Bernstein's memorable background music...

The film opens with several truckloads of Allied officers, mostly pilots, being transferred to a new German maximum-security prison camp at Sagan...

The Camp 'Kommandant', Von Luger (Hannes Messemer), tells Captain Ramsey (James Donald), 'We have, in effect, put all our rotten eggs in one basket, and we intend to watch this basket carefully.'

But since all the British and American officers in his charge are men who have made several attempts to escape from other prison camps, Von Luger knows his words are meaningless...

The master planner is 'Big X,' Roger Bartlett (Richard Attenborough), who has just endured three months of Gestapo/SS torture, and plans to strike back, getting as many men as possible out of the camp, in order to 'harass, confuse and confound the enemy' behind the lines...

He announces a terrific plan for a mass break-out of 250 men and schemes three simultaneous tunnels Tom, Dick, and Harry...

The plan, so precise, proceeds in an orderly fashion, with a great deal of attention placed on caution and ruse to deflect German attentions... The captives involve themselves in much surface activity, which masks the underground work...

Hilts (Steve McQuenn), the 'Cooler King,' leads the Germans on a memorable motorcycle chase through back roads and across the fields right up to the Swiss frontier...

Hendley (James Garner), the 'Scrounger' is a charming thief whose particular gift is the misappropriation of all the required supplies for an escape...

Blythe (Donald Pleasance) has the talents of a 'Forger', and makes visas and passports... He suggests in one scene: ' Tea without milk is so uncivilized.'

Danny Velinski (Charles Bronson) is the experienced Polish-American 'Tunnel-King.'

Louis Sedgwick (James Coburn) is the 'Manufacturer' of bellows-operated ventilation...

Ashley-Pitt (David McCallum) is the 'Dispersal' with his ingenious methods of getting rid of the dirt generated by the tunneling activities...

Andy McDonald (Gordon Jackson ) is 'Intelligence,' the officer who develops a fantastic security system to protect the compounds from the German "Ferrets."

Archibald Ives (Angus Lennie) is the 'Mole,' whose fragile mind has been taxed by several years in the camps, repeated failed escape attempts, and time in the cooler...

Dennis Cavendish (Nigel Stock) is the 'Surveyor' who miscalculates the distance to the trees...

Guard Werner (Robert Graf) is the 'Ferret' who affirms to Hendley: 'I could tell you stories about my teeth that would make your hair stand on end.'

'The Great Escape' is a pretty good motion picture where the toll of freedom is precious, and the movie's ending provokes deep and serious meditation... It graphically shows what enterprising men can accomplish under the most unusual circumstances... It has a great cast, and is beautifully made...

3 out of 5 stars A decent WWII POW movie.......2007-01-01

The Great Escape was a decent movie. However, it did not live upto my expectations.

The storyline was fine, action was decent and suitable and characters played their parts well. The movie also detailed the escape plot well and went into considerable depth.

One part of the movie that reduced it's quality was the unnecessary comic relief throughout the movie. Almost from the start, many POW's act like they are on vacation and not a prison camp. I don't think real-life POWs would have acted like that. In the same vein, the German officers appeared fools and clowns, who not only tolerated much insolence but didn't seem to have a clue at all.

This tongue-in-cheek 1970 variation on The Dirty Dozen looks less fresh than it did in the year of its release, but it still has some enjoyable moments. Clint Eastwood stars along with Donald Sutherland, Harry Dean Stanton, Telly Savalas, Don Rickles, Carroll O'Connor, and Gavin MacLeod in the story of American soldiers who try to steal gold behind enemy lines in World War II. Sutherland's hippie G.I. doesn't have the sardonic and timely appeal he did during the Vietnam War, but the film's irreverence and several of the performances are worth a visit. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars I still love this movie.......2007-04-04

I first saw this movie when I was a kid and was just a WWII buff. I can honestly say, though, that since then I will make a point to watch it whenever I see it. While it is not high art by any stretch, it is an eminently watchable movie that is well paced and has iconic characters you'll remember well after you see the movie (who could forget Oddball). In fact, I'm going to go watch it right now...

5 out of 5 stars Simply a great film..........2007-03-20

One of my all time favourites, Kelly Heroes somehow manages to find comic relief, humor and irony in the otherwise dismal environment of war.

Under the mask of wartime confusion, the guys pull of the 'perfect caper.' You just have to wonder just how often such a real event must have taken place.

The action in this movie flows very well and the performances by Sutherland, Savalas and Rickles are superb. I must have watched this film 25 times by now and never tire from or get bored with it.

Highly recommended - but not for under 12yo.

4 out of 5 stars Very subtle, but hilarious.......2007-03-16

The hordes of reviewers that have written earlier on this movie have covered the plot, and how funny this movie is, and how "1970s" it is. I want to add a bit about the subtle points in this movie that are really good. Telly Savalas does an excellent job as the lungs-of-brass Sergeant who goes along for one reason only, and that is to keep all the men under him alive. How he does this and the efforts he goes through are all kept in the movie, and that could not have been easy to do. Carroll O'Connor's General is another lungs-of-brass type, but his focus is to get close enough to the real action to share in the glory. He, however, is so completely clueless as to be, well...believable! Sutherland's Oddball is everybody's favorite. What is really funny though is how everyone in theater (combat theater) knows him. Then there is the whole subject of the marching band and how it gets involved. Yes, the story in the movie is pretty superficial, but the subtleties in this movie are what really make it go, and make it one of the most satisfying Eastwood movies ever made.

Mixing action, humor, sentiment, and even a few righteous moral convictions, The Wild Geese is good, rousing fun. Released theatrically in 1978 (oddly, this 2005 DVD release is referred to as the "30th Anniversary Edition"), director Andrew V. McLaglen's film depicts the adventures of a group of British mercenaries hired by a shady multinational corporation to free the benevolent leader of an African nation held captive by a ruthless dictator. Led by the caustic, no-nonsense Col. Allen Faulkner (Richard Burton), these soldiers of fortune are all stout fellows out to earn a big payday and restore a good man to his rightful place of power (the underlying message of universal racial brotherhood is effective, if somewhat simplistic), and they do their job swiftly and efficiently... at least until they're double-crossed by their venal, perfidious employers, at which point the film becomes a tale of survival and revenge. The cast, which also includes Richard Harris, Roger Moore, and a host of other fine veteran actors, is first-rate, the story-telling efficient, the dialogue entertaining (with occasional bursts of profanity), and the action reasonably exciting and not overly graphic. And even if the pace is somewhat leisurely by new millennium standards (we're nearly an hour into it before the actual mission starts), The Wild Geese is a very enjoyable ride. Bonus features include a profile of producer Euan Lloyd and commentary by Lloyd, Moore, and journalist Jonathan Sothcott. --Sam Graham

5 out of 5 stars Great Quality.......2007-04-11

My husband has worn out his VHS of this movie, and he was so pleased with the quality of this DVD! It's a good "old school" action flick, with humor, plot and good character developement.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Perfect.......2007-03-28

I first saw The Wild Geese when I was quite young but I remembered it well so I had to buy it when it came out on DVD. I hadn't seen it in years so I was a bit worried it wouldn't live up to my memory, but my fears were put to rest quickly. The movie is still fantastic even though it is getting on in years. It is as relevant today as it was when it was produced. If you got rid of the fly collars and 70's looking clothes you could rerelease this movie as is and people would go to see it.

4 out of 5 stars The Wild Geese Fly Again.......2007-03-19

I liked this film. Again it is made with the poor quality by which most of the films in the 1970's were but the legendary cast and unique military script really place this movie in higher perspectives. I enjoyed the entire story line. It flows from one scene to another and you can't help it but to like each of the characters and their down on their luck attitudes. What this movie goes to show is that you can make a great film when you have actors with chemistry unlike the artificial version of another film "Tears of the Sun" starring Bruce Willis which attempts to copy "..Wild Geese" but fails.

3 out of 5 stars Silly, but good fun.......2007-03-14

This is one of those movies that probably played better at the time, but after thirty or so years isn't quite as realistic sounding as it might be. An all-star cast with the Richards (Burton and Harris), Hardy Kruger, and Roger Moore, lead a group of mercenaries into Africa to rescue the imprisoned Mandela-like "leader of his people" who will presumably be willing to make a deal with a multi-national corporation (headed by the oily Stuart Granger). We're introduced to the characters in suitable 70s-intro fashion, and it's one of the problems with the film: Burton's the cynic, Harris is more of an idealist, Moore's the wisecracking tough guy who's always getting into trouble, and Kruger's the racist South African who just wants a farm he can call his own. By the time you're done with the intros, you should know who's going to live and who will die at the end of the movie. It's very predictable.

The theme of the movie, racial reconciliation in Africa, is of course more or less commendable. Unfortunately, this long after the movie, the whites have left everywhere but South Africa, pretty much, and the blacks have taken to killing each other (Darfur, for instance, and Rwanda/Burundi). As a result, the sentiments expressed in the movie, looked back on from this far afterwards, seem unreasonably idealistic and optimistic.

It's always fun to see a war movie from this era. Hollywood wasn't big on doing things realistically (this is the era of the six-shooter you never reloaded, and the "flesh wound" in the shoulder) and so it was fun, for instance, to see Roger Moore sneak up on an African bad guy with a cigar in his teeth (they stink, the guy would have sniffed him out a hundred feet away). There also was a marvelously contrived, unrealistic episode involving shooting sentries with a crossbow loaded with cyanide crystals, and later a scenario involving gassing sleeping soldiers, when it certainly looked like it would have been easier to shoot them with silenced guns.

All of that being bad, I don't think Burton or Harris were ever really terrible in a movie. Granted they're not at the top of their game, but then again they're not terrible, either. Moore's his usual wiseacre self, and Kruger, given the trite dialog they gave him, does OK. Granger does a good turn as the bad guy. If you're interested in this sort of thing, it's a fun movie, and I would recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Wild Geese.......2007-03-04

This is one of the best movies of its type. This action packed movie makes the Dogs of War look second rated.
This movie was made into multi languages and one can see why.
The Wild Geese has a good script and the action is good for a movie made in 1978.The cast is brilliant just look at the actors Richard Harris,Hardy Kruger,Roger Moore and Stewart Grainger.
This movie is a must buy for people who collect action movies.

Based on the WWI adventure novel Brown on Resolution by C.S. Forester, Sailor of the King is an enjoyable British-made war drama buoyed by its energetic star, Jeffrey Hunter, and an exciting and suspenseful premise. The picture opens on a slow note with British Navy captain Michael Rennie ending a tryst with English girl Wendy Hiller; years later, the product of that union is British-Canadian sailor Jeffrey Hunter, whose ship is dispatched to intercept a powerful German warship by now-Admiral Rennie. The ensuing fight sinks Hunter's ship and damages the German boat, but Hunter evades capture and hunkers down on the island where the Nazi captain (Peter Van Eyck) has docked for repairs; there he wages a one-man assault against the ship using only a rifle and his own skills. Roy Boulting's direction is crisp and assured, and the cast, especially the underappreciated Hunter (in his first leading role), is uniformly fine, which should make Sailor of the King a worthwhile discovery for WWII action fans. The DVD includes two endings--the original British release, which adds to the Rennie-Hiller relationship, and the pat American conclusion. -- Paul Gaita

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Movie.......2007-06-14

A very well done movie of a quality war/adventure story. Only one weapon gaff but it didn't significantly subtract from the viewing pleasure. The DVD also had an alternate ending. Both endings are OK but I prefer the one with Brown still alive.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Film.......2007-06-07

I'd been waiting for years for this film to be released on DVD.
This is a great story about man captured by the germans after his ship was sunk by them.
He manages to escape the germans after they have to pull into what amounts to a fiord
and manages to delay the repairs being done on the ship long enough to allow the british
fleet to arrive.
I don't want to give a lot of detail, just make it seem worth looking into.
If your a fan of WW II films this is a great one.

2 out of 5 stars Sailor of the King.......2007-05-31

This is an old fashioned, predictable love story. It includes heroism to the corp.
This has two of my favorite male actors, Jeffry Hunter and Michael Rennie.
What more can you ask for?

4 out of 5 stars Carry on lads........2007-05-29

Fox's homage to England's Royal Navy is a decent WW II film. Jeffrey Hunter is appropriately brave, and Michael Rennie is stoic and very British. The surprise is a very interesting Wendy Hiller in the first 20 minutes of the story and then again at the end. Included on the DVD is the alternate ending, which is also quite interesting for an early 1950's movie. The surface battle scenes are very fine.

3 out of 5 stars English Navy story.......2007-05-29

Enjoyed this movie 20 + years ago and was delighted to finally find it in DVD. It is dated and a little corny but still a nice story and well done in that dry British style.

Not your typical star-studded or star-spangled war film, cult-fave director Samuel Fuller's Fixed Bayonets is a viscerally thrilling Korean War drama of one platoon's trial, and one corporal's baptism, under fire. Morale is high but the ammo is low for an American division hunkered down in the mountains of Korea. Certain massacre awaits if they retreat. To give "15,000 men a break," 48 "of our toughest combat men" are selected to stay behind and trick the "commies" into thinking the entire division is in place while the others escape safely across a river. Fixed Bayonets is raw and brutal in the best Fuller tradition. The backgrounds are obvious fakes, and the platoon members sport the usual war movie nicknames like Whitey, Rock, Jonesy, and "Mr. Belvedere" (he's the resident know-it-all). But all else has the authentic ring of reportage, as in a powerful scene when the men cluster together to rub their feet to ward off frostbite. Richard Basehart stars as Denno, who can "take an order, but can't give one" until his three superiors are knocked off one by one, leaving him in command. This rueful exchange--"They told me this was going to be a police action." "Why didn't they send the cops?"--is as close as Fuller gets to geopolitics. For war-movie buffs, he does deliver pounding and tense action sequences. In one harrowing scene, a medic must navigate a minefield to try and rescue a wounded sergeant and retrieve the only map to the field.. But he is resolutely unsentimental and more interested in the ravaged, human face of war. These are faces you will not soon forget (one of them, reportedly, belongs to James Dean, but this film is so gripping, one is hard-pressed to make the effort to try to spot him). --Donald Liebenson

We received our item in a very short time and were pleased with our purchase.

1 out of 5 stars A dissappointment!.......2007-06-15

Frankly I'm quite dissapointed in this film. It's in black and white, which actually is no problem for me since I enjoy classic war films. The dissappointmnet is that the whole movie seems to be shot in a studio!!! and a very small studio! Really dissapointed. Also nothing really special about the story.

4 out of 5 stars Good solid Sam Fuller Movie.......2007-06-14

A solid Sam Fuller directed movie with outstanding performances by Gene Evans and Richard Basehart. Classic Fuller with more dialogue than 'action'. Similar to his other Korean War movie "Steel Helmet" including the use of WWII Infantry packs in Korea which had been replaced by then. Overall, a good movie for a Saturday afternoon. Fuller was a veteran WWII Infantryman who showed us the grimness of the front-line soldier's world. It would make a great DVD set with "Steel Helmet". Throw in "Big Red One" and you would have the key Sam Fuller war movies.

5 out of 5 stars A tale of the Korean War.......2007-03-14

This is a taut war movie from Samuel Fuller. A platoon is cut off from the rest of the outfit and has to try to work itself back. Richard Basehart plays the corporal who ends up in charge as men get killed off one by one. Look for James Dean as one of the soldiers.

5 out of 5 stars Korean War Shoot-em-up !.......2007-01-17

Richard Basehart stars as a Corporal who does not like the responsibilities of command. When the Chinese invade the Division must pull back across the river and set up new defence positions. A stay behind platoon is left on the opposite bank of the river to hold a critical pass. One by one the platoon's leaders are killed and it is up to Basehart to save the day. Excellent Korean War drama/action movie. On par with "Pork Chop Hill" and "One Minute To Zero". Also stars Gene Evans as the Sergeant and Skip Homier as a soldier. Highly recommend!

Uncomfortably close to Ben Hecht and Alfred Hitchcock's film Notorious, this World War II drama (based on a novel by Susan Isaacs) concerns a love affair between a spy (Michael Douglas) and a secretary (Melanie Griffith) that goes south when duty turns him cold and pushes her into dangerous, behind-the-lines intelligence work. Liam Neeson plays the gentleman Nazi unwittingly providing Griffith with cover as domestic help. The best parts of the film are the twists and turns in the romance (Douglas is very good at playing a character who can turn off all feeling at will) at the beginning, while the German scenes are less compelling despite such high stakes for the heroine. The climax--taking us back to Notorious whether it wants to or not--is quite gripping, largely due to Douglas's performance. --Tom Keogh

5 out of 5 stars Finally on DVD!.......2007-05-06

I stumbled across this movie at a VHS blowout sale many years ago and fell in love with it.
A little known film starring Melanie Griffith as a secretary turned spy and a "real" spy (Michael Douglas) during WWII.
Now you can own this film on DVD...so what's stopping you?!?

5 out of 5 stars If you love spy/love stories, Shining Through is for you...........2007-04-02

Shining Through was one of the best espionage stories I have ever seen. It is a accurate to the history, costumes, speech, and setting. The main characters played by Michael Douglas and Melanie Griffith had an chemistry that matched those of 1930 black and white espionage movies. I can watch this film over and over and never get tired of seeing it. In my opinion, it was Melanie Griffth and Michael Douglas's best perfoamce ever. I waited 10 years for this movie to be released on DVD. Buy it...you will not be disappointed. The book by Susan Issacs was equally fantasic to read. The movie surpassed the read which is unusal.

5 out of 5 stars Old time Hollywood.......2007-03-19

this was a great trip down memory lane. When actors actually acted!

5 out of 5 stars Spy & Love Story.......2007-01-12

This is one of my favorite DVDs. It's set between the USA and Nazi-Germany about 1945. Melanie Griffin and Michael Douglas are the primary actors, of course, with great supporting actors/actresses. Melanie is half Jewish, living in Queens, in search of a job. While looking for a secretary job, she gets the not-good-enough treatment because she's not from Vassar. Things change quickly, when they hear her speaking German to a cleaning lady. Just so happens that the head honcho (Michael) needs an interpreter secretary cause he can't speak German. Turns out old Michael is a secret spy for the USA and makes trips back and forth to Germany and needs letters translated and such.

When one of the other spies gets whacked by the Nazis, Melanie decides she wants to go into the spy thing for the US, so she can check out her Jewish relatives, last seen in Berlin, and maybe get them to safety in the US, somehow. She manages to even mix in with the German elite. Liam Neeson is also great as a high-ranking German officer. And John Gielgud is a spy too. As always, he is outstanding in everything.

There are great plots, characters, twists and turns, and lots of suspense. It's a spy thing, run-and-hide from the Nazi's (who are snoopy little suckers), get the secrets, and get out alive type movie. It's also a love story, cause Melanie falls in love with old Michael along the way and he acts like the coldest mackarel in town. Of course, if I tell you any more, I'll have to shoot you, cause it's a SPY movie. (DUH!)

I've watched this movie a bah-zillion times. It is really great.

This lean, efficient horror flick stands well above most bloated blockbusters. Dog Soldiers follows a military squad on a training mission in the Scottish wilds, where they run into a pack of werewolves. There's nothing fancy about the plot--the soldiers hole up in a farmhouse and desperately try to fend off the werewolves until dawn--but the script is full of smart dialogue and clever ideas, the direction is dynamic, and the performances (from Kevin McKidd, Sean Pertwee, Emma Cleasby, and Liam Cunningham, among a solid cast of relative unknowns) are strong and committed throughout. Dog Soldiers pays homage to Night of the Living Dead, Aliens, and The Evil Dead, among other films, but the references are woven into the fabric of the movie. An unpretentious, tension-inducing flick like this is a pleasant reminder that even crude special effects can be more evocative than expensive computer flashiness. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars ecxellent unknown military horror.......2007-06-18

great independent lower budget gem. This is the same guy who made The Descent, if you are a horror fan than this is worth checking out, a diffent spin on the old werewolf fims.

5 out of 5 stars great movei.......2007-05-12

I think this is one of the better werewolf movies around. The special effects aren't great but over all it isnt your regular run of the mill werewolf movie. If you like off the beaten path movies then you will like this one.

4 out of 5 stars "Dog Soldiers".......2007-04-07

I surprisingly enjoyed this movie. It is a little choppy and hard to understand what is going on at first, but it is well worth the watch. Especially if you are a werewolf movie fan.

4 out of 5 stars Enjoyable.......2007-04-07

It's always fun to watch those jokers across the pond trying to be scary. It's a class B horror movie; Bad writing, predictable plot, cheesy acting, and high school drama club effects.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining Army vs. the Monsters.......2007-04-05

Effective well-done action horror film. A squad of British soldiers on a routine exercise in the remote hills of Scotland find themselves stalked by a group of werewolves. Holing up in a remote farmhouse with a helpful and attractive zoologist, they make a last stand as the monsters lay siege. With fine performances and richly colored camerawork, there is a lot here for the afficianado looking for something to watch before the next great horror film comes along. There are knowing nods to a range of films from Night of the Living Dead to Zulu. The soldiers are a real team and the major source of conflict comes with a mysterious 'special ops' officer they are forced to carry with them who clearly knows more than he is saying. There is a lot of blood and some internal organs on display but nothing too beyond the pall except perhaps for one scene involving an overly playful (or hungry) dog. The film has a quiet sense of humor as well as a feel for suspense. There will be nothing too surprising here for anyone who has watched a lot of horror films but it is all very well done and fun to watch. The film was released directly to DVD in this country. The DVD is not overloaded with extras but has enough. Highly recommended.
