Recognizing Jet Li's rising popularity in the United States--popularity spurred on by his roles in Lethal Weapon 4 and Romeo Must Die--Dimension Home Video has released four of his Hong Kong films as a package. The weakest of them is The Defender, in which Li plays a crack bodyguard from mainland China who is appointed to protect a witness to a killing in Hong Kong. Though the movie has its share of action, Li's dour character gives him little room to display the buoyant charisma that's made him such an international star. Fortunately, the other three films more than make up for it. In The Defender, Li is a cop who goes deep undercover, becoming a noted criminal and distressing his young son, who doesn't know that his father is on a mission. This movie is a prime example of how Hong Kong movies can fuse over-the-top sentimentality with jaw-dropping kung-fu spectacle--the climactic fight scene, in which father and son work together to defeat a cadre of villains, is both hilariously absurd and dazzlingly acrobatic.

Twin Warriors is also an amazing compendium of kung-fu action, also featuring the skills of Michelle Yeoh (sometimes known as Michelle Khan, costar of Jackie Chan's Supercop and the James Bond flick Tomorrow Never Dies). This epic culminates in the development of the discipline of Tai Chi, but it's far from a history lesson--Li's character develops this new martial art to defeat his oldest friend, who's become a corrupt warlord. Finally, there's Fist of Legend, another historical epic and one of Li's best movies. A superior script and direction support an intense performance from Li, who plays the head of a martial arts school caught up in political intrigue with the Japanese. But having a stronger plot doesn't mean the movie skimps on action; on the contrary, the fight scenes have a greater emotional impact. All in all, an excellent introduction to Jet Li, one of the world's most admired action heroes. --Bret Fetzer

3 out of 5 stars disappointment awaits.......2007-05-07

This collection has poor subtitles, bad video quality, and false representation as to what is on offer, the first two movies are what they claim, where as the 2nd disc contains poor quality documentary on Jet Li, so may be great for a Jet Li fanatic, but not so a Jet Li movie buff!

3 out of 5 stars Kung Fu movie fan.......2007-03-06

The Jet Li Collection has a nice interview with Jet Li, interspersed with footage from various film and "Lee-thal Weapon" shows footage of a very young Li Lainjie at wushu competitions.

The two movies that are included in this set are ok. The "Evil Cult" is kind of a standard period kung fu movie, with a reasonably standard plot (and acting skills). It's not as good as some of the classics with Jet Li (Once upon a time in China, Fong Sai Yook etc), but it's ok. Dr Wai is perhaps the more interesting movies as the story line is original and creative, although the action in the movie is very reminiscent of Indianna Jones type scenes. There's not a lot of kung fu, but the up side is there's also not a lot of plasticky hairpieces and rather stilted deliveries. It's also interesting to see Jet Li and Rosamund Kwan interacting on the screen not as Wong Fei Hong and Aunt 13.

The real minus is that Dr Wai, which seemed to have the most potential for being interesting/different, had sound only coming through one speaker and subtitles so blurry you could barely make them out.

For $11.99, it's probably worth it IF you're a Jet Li fan.

5 out of 5 stars Totally Fun.......2006-12-28

I have not seen this particular collection but I picked it up for my sister for her birthday this year and for her it was great. A little background on her; She's 19 and loves anything Asian, yet she knows about *nothing* about Asian history, what she likes is it's culture now i.e. anime and Dir En Grey and one of her favorite pastimes is checking out Asian men. I, myself, *love* Jet Li films and think he's an amazing Martial Artists so I'm sure I'd love this collection anywhoo but for her she loved it because she thinks Jet Li and the many other Asians in the films were 'hot' and the martial arts in the films are simply a bonus since she enjoys violence also. She told me that and the that she thought the plots were weak but who cares because Asians are hot (She loved The Fast and the Furious, Tokyo Drift so what more can you expect).

4 out of 5 stars wrong picture for dvd cover, or viewer isn't reviewing this collection, one or the other.......2006-03-06

One disc has evil cult and dr wai, and I think there are one other disc, with young jet footage and a long american crowd interview. All in this is worth viewing except dr. wai. This movie may be watchable in a good transfered version, but the subtitles are IMPOSSIBLE TO READ and the picture is the worst that I HAVE EVER SEEN for this new of a movie. So I will go over them all.

DR wai- pretty good, but impossible to watch with this version

Evil Cutl Master- very good movie, it's one of those frenetic movies where people have like special powers, but prett good. This movie has imbedded subs. but they were VERY EASY TO READ, which I have never experienced. They are outline in black very nicely. The picture quality is also very good. The sound quality is a =nother story, you will have to turn it up really loud. Aside from that, this version of the movie is good.

Interview, Highlights-----all worth watching, your average bonus feature, but a little better.

4 out of 5 stars Needs subtitles!!!!!.......2005-12-14

Great movies but 2 of them are in chinese with no titles!!!!!
Lee-thal Weapon is great with rare footage of Jet performing live on stage.

The One sets a martial arts milestone by pitting action star Jet Li against his greatest enemy: himself. This sci-fi thriller establishes a "multiverse" consisting of countless parallel universes, each populated by variants of every individual. Li plays a renegade from the Multiverse Agency, illegally traveling through "quantum tunnels" to eliminate all versions of himself until only two remain, each sharing the cumulative strength of their "parallel universe versions." This mumbo-jumbo inspires a variety of dazzling special effects, and director James Wong (with cowriter and fellow X-Files alumnus Glen Morgan) injects clever humor into the Matrix-derivative premise. Carla Gugino is wasted as the "good" Li's obligatory love interest, but The One will appeal to action fans with its fast-paced pursuit between the evil Li and two agents (Delroy Lindo, Jason Statham) assigned to stop his trans-universal killing spree. It's a one-gimmick movie, best enjoyed with your brain in neutral. --Jeff Shannon

4 out of 5 stars the one of a kind for Jet Li.......2007-05-17

For a Jet Li movie, The One is most original, blending martial arts with a sci-fi environment and matrix-like effects. The idea is great, and you may fall in love with "the idea" more than the movie itself. Unfortunately, despite the martial arts, The One executes itself too poorly.

The most memorable element of the film is that there are 2 Jet Li's. Well, 123 to be exact from 123 different universes, but it comes down to the last 2, and the "evil" Jet Li charcater is obsessed with becoming "the one". If he kills off the good Jet Li character, he will become invincibly powerful, though he is nearly there. Near the end, the final fight is good Li vs bad, a decent fight that lasts 7 minutes, but uses the matrix like effects in the fight poorly. They kinda look cool at first, but if you get too much into it visually, it just looks pretty weak and breaks up the flow of the martial arts styles throughout the fight.

I have to say the rest of the cast is pretty dull, except maybe Delroy Lindo and Jason Statham, who play 2 agents from the alternate universe trying to stop the evil Li character. For Jason Statham fans, he's got a pretty large role in The One, but don't expect his character to know how to fight like in the Transporter movies.

The acting is rather weak too, and again, the movie relies a lot off of visual effects, and most just don't do the justice if you have seen the matrix one too many times. There is a scene where the evil Li character picks up 2 motorcycles and knocks around some cops with them, that actually looked pretty neat.

The originality of this movie, the martial arts, and the good Jet Li vs bad Jet Li still give this movie a 4 stars. I absoultely loved this movie when it first came out, because I thought oh who cool this is for Jet Li. Its pretty cool, but don't go watching this in too much detail or you'll ruin the experience.

3 out of 5 stars Farcical fantasy.......2007-03-07

Jet Li possesses incredible martial art skills but outside of being a vehicle to demonstrate his prowess, "The One" is a ridiculous action fantasy. Besides some decent special effects and a good musical score. the film has few redeeming qualities.

The premise of the movie is that there are multiple parallel universes called multiverses. Travel is prohibited between them and is policed by an authority called the MVA. Li, a former MVA agent Gabriel Yulaw killed another version of himself on a different universe, in the line of duty and discovered an increase in his strength. He then proceeded to destroy an additional 122 versions of himself in other universes, each time increasing his strength, with the goal of becoming the supreme being ("the one").

The last survivng version of Li is Los Angeles sheriff's deputy, Gabe Law, who also has become more powerful. Yulaw travels to L.A. to eliminate the last version of himself, a formidible adversary. He is being pursued by MVA agents played by Delroy Lindo and Jason Stratham who are commissioned to stop him. It is postulated that the destruction of deputy Law will upset the workings of the universe or make Yulaw totally invulnerable.

5 out of 5 stars Great Scifi /Action movie.......2006-10-07

This movie is very original. If you like Scif and Action this is a must see for you.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Idea.......2006-08-04

Just to let you know before hand, I'm reviewing the movie itself, not the DVD. The DVD itself is pretty good, but doesn't stand out from those of other movies. It's got the typical special features and commentary, like most movies. Since the DVD doesn't stand out, I'll get to my review on the movie itself.

The One was overall a pretty good movie, with lots of interesting ideas, but it had some faults as well. What I liked best about it was the fact that The One was original, as far as the setting goes. The idea that there is a copy of each person in each of the many dimensions was original. Other high points included the special effects, camera angles, and stunts. All of these were brought together in the scene where Jet Li fights a copy of himself. However, there were low points in The One as well. For one, I thought that there was too much action in this movie, which somewhat ruined the plot. For instance, most of the movie was fight scenes, which got old after a while. However, since Jet Li is relatively good at fight scenes, that wasn't much of a problem. Another thing that I disliked about this movie was that it seemed like a stereotypical Jet Li film; all action and little plot. The One was almost exactly like Hero and other Jet Li films specifically because most of it was occasionally mindless action. Also, the dialog of The One wasn't great, and occasionally hard to understand, and I thought that the writing wasn't up to par with the special affects and stunts. However, with a great story, setting and ideas, this movie kept me entertained, which is what a movie is supposed to do. For that, I give it seven stars. If you like action movies with intense and good martial arts sequences, then you'll love this movie. However, if you don't enjoy action sequences, then The One will most likely bore you. To conclude, I say that The One was an original movie that is worth taking some time to see.

3 out of 5 stars not so much for the plot, but the martial arts.......2006-07-09

I agree with all the bitching about the plot in this movie, it's a bad joke, and even a bit painful to listen to in places (though i really liked Jason Statham [Snatch, Transporter] in this movie). But the thing i really liked about this movie was the accuracy of the martial arts, i didn't notice it at first but the two Jet Li's use very different styles of martial arts, my Sifu even mentioned it. The 'Evil' Jet Li uses Hsing Yi, which is a very direct, blunt head-on style, which makes sense given the character. The 'Good' Jet-Li uses Ba Gua (or Pa Kua as i've heard it called) which is a very fluid, moving, evading art; which again makes sense given the character. This 'meta-plot' is an aspect that intrigued me, as did the relative accuracy (given movies) about their fighting styles.

1 out of 5 stars original is better.......2006-02-05

If you want UNCUT ORIGINAL version, ALWAYS look for ORIGINAL LICENSED Production. NOT US Release. Its a foreign film, it should not be US version to begin with~! HELLO!!!?? Why settle for LESS with US Version where they edit and cut so many excellent scenes especially with Jackie's Fighting Scenes. And US Release ruins the speed and sound as well. I have been collecting JET Li movies both HK and US Release Version for quite some time now. I found HK Version to be MUCH MORE in enjoyable, and HIGHER in Quality. American Market always like to "Americanize" and "Control". Regional Code Regulation thing is one of the example to CONTROL the Market. Why not let everyone enjoy the same HK Original Release move the same way REST OF THE WORLD enjoys it ?? No one makes Hollywood American movies to "French version" or "Chinese Version" ~! This what Americans are doing~! Well, enjoy the cheap "American version" then~! LOL

      1 out of 5 stars DUBBED!!!!NO Subtitles.......2005-08-28

I will first and foremost explain the frustration of DUBBED movies. The films original format is not on this DVD. It takes away from the movie & actors. It should have been left in it's original sound format. Any real movie enthusiast frowns upon DUBBED. The dubbed voices are horrible, and it takes from the Kung-fu, and the plotline.

5 out of 5 stars These are Dubbed, but still the best.......2005-05-20

Yes, it is correct that these are dubbed in English and have new English titles. But who cares? What the title and language is in don't have nothing to do with Jet Li and the film. These still are considered to be Jet Li's best films, or if not the best, some of the Top 10 by far.

I have watched the HK films of each of these movies, that just have English Subtitles. But like many millions of people, I really don't like watching a movie and trying to read it at the same time. It takes attention off of watching the action, with having to read whats said. I still love the regular movies, don't get me wronge. But I praise for these movies Dubbed in English. I love it. Cause now I can watch the movie 100% without having to read it. Yes, some of the orginal langauge after dubbed in English was slightly changed to say different stuff. But still yet, its still very good movies, just awesome movies.

So, to all those that just wanna see the films and love Jet Li, these are very worth getting and collecting. I love having them all in a Collection Set, instead of having each seprate. I believe makes it much easier and more organized with these sets. And if you love collection Jet Li sets, I would very reccommend getting along with this Once Upon a Time in China 1, 2, & 3 collection set also.

2 out of 5 stars ALL DUBBED! aaugh.......2002-12-18

ALl 4 movies in this set are dubbed in English. I was horribly disappointed. Dont make the same mistake I did. Find the dubbed ones.

      4 out of 5 stars Great Collection.......2002-10-11

Jet Li is Awesome. Pretty much that sums it up. All four movies are good with Fist of Legand rising to the top. By far, the best martial arts movie I have ever seen. Fist of Legand, a remake of Bruce Lee's classic Chinese Connection, is truly remarkable. The story line was adapted from Chinese connction with a few added plot lines. The action is fluent and runs smoothly throughout the movie. The classic dojo fight where Chen fights the whole school at once was done perfectly. And the end fight scene is one of the best I've seen. It was amazing!
Then, my second favorite of this collection would have to be Twin Warriors. A truly outstanding traditional chinese Wire Fu masterpiece. The action throughout is incredible mixed with light humor. And, like Fist of Legand, the end fight scene was remarkable.
Next, I would say would be the Enforcer, although when I first saw it as a subtitled movie it was called Father is Hero. This one incorporates a little bit of a darker story line dealing with the deep undercover work of Li's character. The fight scenes are good, but do not really dazzle until the end. Overall it's not a bad flick for any Jet Li fan.
Now the reason I give this collection 4 stars is due to the fact that it has the Defender in it. It tried to be a story movie first and an action movie second, but in my opinion it didn't do that well of a job. The action is weak throughout and ends weak. Definately not one of my favorite movies, but I watch it every once in a while. A Jet Li fan can appreciate this movie but it probably will never make the top of anybody's list
