In the opening scene of this thoroughly mindless action flick, a psycho holds a group of terrified hostages in a grocery store, and yells to renegade cop Marion Cobretti (Sylvester Stallone) that he's going to blow the place to kingdom come. "Go ahead," says the cop nicknamed "Cobra," presumably because he's tightly coiled and strikes with deadly force. "I don't shop here." And so it goes with this brutal and for the most part disgusting Stallone showcase, in which Sly's then wife, Brigitte Nielsen, provides bad acting and ample cleavage as a fashion model (what else?) who's the only witness against a crazed cult of serial killers. Cobra likes to kill first and leave the questions to his disgruntled superiors, who call on the maverick lawman when all other options have failed. This movie does have a modest following, and for what it's worth, a few of the action sequences are disjointedly exciting. --Jeff Shannon

Though the Charlie Chan film franchise has earned brickbats for its casting of Caucasian actors as the Asian sleuth, the movies have retained popularity among aficionados of '40s-era B-crime pictures, and the six-disc Charlie Chan Chanthology, all featuring Sidney Toler as Chan, should please that crowd. The Missouri-born Toler starred in 11 Chan pictures for Fox before purchasing the rights to the character from creator Earl Derr Biggers's widow and bringing it to budget studio Monogram, where he starred in 11 more Chans before his death in 1947 (Roland Winters replaced him in six more features until 1949). At Monogram, Chan became a Secret Service Agent (a move calculated to cut down on exotic locations and sets), and comedy was integrated into the plots via Mantan Moreland's chauffeur Birmingham Brown; Benson Fong also joined the cast as Number Three Son Tommy, with occasional appearances by daughter Frances (Frances Chan) and son Eddie (Edwin Luke, brother of Keye Luke, who played Number One Son Lee in the Fox Chans).

Other than that, the six films collected here (the first six Chans for Monogram, and all but five directed by Phil Rosen) are largely indistinguishable from one another save for the murder victims and their demises. In The Secret Service, Chan investigates the death of a wartime inventor; a San Francisco socialite expires in The Chinese Cat; daughter Frances is involved in the murder of a psychic in Meeting at Midnight (a.k.a. Black Magic); another government scientist is killed in The Jade Mask, and death by remote control is the focus of The Scarlet Clue. Director Phil Karlson (Kansas City Confidential) adds some noirish atmosphere to The Shanghai Cobra, which has bank employees dying from apparent snakebites. Dated and controversial as they may be, the Chan films are engaging diversions for vintage mystery fans. No extras are featured in the set. --Paul Gaita

5 out of 5 stars charlie chan chanthology.......2007-07-04

Wonderful! Just what I remember it being when I was young....If you remember the Chan mystery series then this is the one, Charlie Chan's children are in these series. The Dvd's came on time and couldn't wait to watch them..my teenage son came home and started watching with me, he was entranced and we had a marathon and watched all of them. Great product!

5 out of 5 stars Charlie is my hero.......2007-07-03

This vendor responded to my purchase very quickly. Well-packaged, no damage. I'm in Chan heaven. Charlie Chan rocks!

2 out of 5 stars Warner Oland, Why Did You Die?.......2007-06-27

These Chan films are from the Monogram series, long after the series, which had begun so brilliantly with Warner Oland at 20th Century Fox 10 or more years earlier, had fizzled. Fox dropped it after a handful of Sidney Toler films (which aren't available yet on DVD). Supposedly Toler bought the rights to the name Charlie Chan from the widow of author/creator Earl Derr Biggers and then sold himself and the rights to Monogram. The films suffer terribly. Toler is a tired old man in ersatz oriental makeup, and cheap, boring, repetitious "comedy" relief is provided in extremis by Mantan Moreland as a cliché blabbering, superstitious black lackey. The stories are so-so, but whatever values there may be are undermined by those two main stars. Benson Fong, as Number Three Son, is generally good -- charming though not so enthusiastic as Keye Luke -- but most of the time he has to play opposite Moreland or, in one pathetic film, a Chinese actress named Frances Chan as his sister of the same name...and she couldn't act her way out of a wet paper bag.

There are two more Warner Oland Chan movies that have yet to make it to DVD. It would be nice if Fox would release those along with the early Toler films. But forget these Monogram pot boilers.

5 out of 5 stars A Great 6 Pack.......2007-05-22

I have all of these films with Sidney Toler and Mantan Moreland which I watch in "rotation" in my video collection. Any "TRUE" Chan fan should have 'Chanthology' in their collection as a fan will enjoy these 6 movie classics from the 1940's. For the most part the films are wholesome family entertainment. I highly recommend them.

4 out of 5 stars If you love Charlie Chan.......2007-04-03

If you are a Charlie Chan fan, then this is a must have in your collection.

I expected more from these DVDs. There is way too much talk and music during the presentations. I bought this DVD set to watch these great cars and hear how they sound, but it was mostly an old man (sounds like it) giving a history lesson.

The six-film Herzog/Kinski boxed set is a sleek compilation of a visionary cinematic collaboration. The history of cinema is dotted with great directors who have found an actor whose face, voice, and style capture that director's point of view: Josef Von Sternberg and Marlene Dietrich; John Ford and John Wayne; Martin Scorsese and Robert DeNiro. In 1972, the German director Werner Herzog cast Polish actor Klaus Kinski in Aguirre, the Wrath of God--the result was perhaps the definitive film for both. Kinski had previously made almost 100 films, but his malevolent role--as a Spanish conquistador obsessed with finding gold--shot him into international stardom. Though Herzog and the volatile Kinski were at each other's throats through much of the filming, seven years later the director cast Kinski as the tortured vampire of Nosferatu, Phantom of the Night (a color remake of the silent horror classic) and the title character of Woyzeck, based on the classic expressionistic German play about a jealous, unstable soldier who murders his lover. Both films continued the Herzog-Kinski trademark of intense unflinching emotion and the palpable presence of the raw physical world.

In 1982, Fitzcarraldo carried this ethos to new heights as Kinski portrayed a man who, in order to bring grand opera to the depths of Peru, has a huge steamship hauled over a mountainside using ropes, pulleys, and human endurance. The mad ambition of the film matched that of its hero as Herzog repeatedly placed crew and actors at risk of their lives. Nonetheless, the love-hate relationship between the director and his star carried them into one last film, the uneven but still remarkable Cobra Verde, about a Brazilian bandit sent to Africa to reopen the slave trade. After Kinski's death in 1991, Herzog made a documentary, My Best Fiend, about their decades of collaboration; the result rivals their previous work as a testament to human extremity. --Bret Fetzer

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars WOW!.......2007-05-18

The quality of the DVDs is among the best. Picture and sound is great. I had only ever seen "Nosferatu" before getting the set. "Fitzcaraldo" has become one of my favorite all time movies since getting the set. The documentary "My Best Fiend" is wonderful.

5 out of 5 stars Good Value.......2007-02-23

I already had two of the films in this set, "Nosferatu" and "Aguirre", so I looked into buying the others separately. Buying the set was less expensive, so that's what I did and gave the duplicates to the local library. I compared the disks before giving them away, and the ones in set were the same as the individual editions. Highly recommended for Herzog and Kinski fans.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS!.......2006-03-03

I can't help but add my voice to the chorus of positive reviews for this set. It is without a doubt the most well put together dvd box set I have ever seen. Even the packaging is awesome. Whoever is responsible for the physical look of this collection should win a product design award or something. All the movies (except Woyzeck) have very entertaining and insightful herzog commentary and most of the movies have english tracks aswell. I'm not sure what restoration was done on these movies but they all look great! I would say that if you are thinking of buying any of these movies alone on DVD just go ahead and opt for the box set. Chances are, if you like and understand the Herzog aesthetic, you will love all of these movies! Cobra Verde, which I once thought was the weakest of the Herzog/Kinski efforts, has become my favorite upon multiple viewings. Could not have a higher possible recommendation!

5 out of 5 stars Kinski, One Of The Greatest Actors Of His Generation?.......2006-03-03

I think that he is, his on screen presence is as powerful as any actor I have ever seen. From the dark ferocity, burning evil of Kinskis portrayal of 'Nosferatu'; without question he is the greatest 'vampire' to have ever graced cinema. To the manic depressive/shockingly haunting eyes of his portrayal of 'Woyzeck' his character in the films name-sake; indeed one of the most troubled yet somehow believeable characters seen on film.

Woyzeck versus Travis Bickle?....that would be an interesting answer.

Outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars A Match Made In Hell.......2005-09-14

It is said that all drama stems from conflict and there was certainly no shortage of it between Werner Herzog and Klaus Kinski. Their relationship reminds me of a troubled romance that is doomed to eventually fall apart, but ignites with such passion when the two are together that it's more than worth the grief. One would expect an arrangement of this nature to result in one or two films before the rift became so great between director and actor that they could no longer tolerate one another. Yet, there exists an undeniable sense of brotherhood between these cinematic legends that underlies their artistic struggle.

I can't tell you how pleased I am to have this set after all these years. Including "My Best Fiend" in this set is absolutely essential for a complete appreciation of the unique relationship Herzog and Kinski shared. As has been mentioned before regarding the documentary, there is a sense of one-sided storytelling as Herzog lays out Kinski's many flaws. And, yes, one has to wonder just which man had the larger ego after hearing some of Herzog's rather polished explanations. While it would have been nice to have Kinski there to argue his side of the story, it's still a unique and fascinating look into the creative lives of two very different sort of men.

Of the films themselves, I'm most fond of Nosferatu and Woyzeck, but Aguirre, the Wrath of God and Fitzcarraldo are truly magnificent epics. I just have to find myself in a particular mood to watch the latter, where the former always hold my attention. In my opinion, Woyzeck is the most overlooked of the Herzog/Kinski collaborations. Certainly Cobra Verde is an inferior film, but it at least has a reputation. Considering Woyzeck was finished in just 18 days with only 27 cuts, I like to think of it as a little miracle.

I've seen Kinski in other films and I've seen works by Herzog without Kinski and it's clear to me that, with a few exceptions, their best work came when they worked together. So, do yourself a favor and pick up this set, then settle in for some intense viewing. And, whatever you do, don't pass on the documentary!

Description

Sylveter Stallone creates another electrifying American hero in the Rocky/Rambo mold: Cobretti the cop, a fearless dispenser of justice out to stop a gang of serial killers. Year: 1986

3 out of 5 stars Cobra muerde!.......2007-04-11

"Cobra" es una pelicula de acción para el lucimiento de Stallone, como una especie de rambo urbano.Si bien la trama es sencilla, la pelicula avanza a punta de balazos, y en eso cumple bien.Despues de tanta secuelas como "Rocky Balboa", "John Rambo" y...¿ se animará para Cobra 2? Por mientras, ve esta para pasar un buen rato.

4 out of 5 stars This is where the law stops....and I start !.......2006-11-23

Sly, after having single-handedly defeated the Soviet Union in Rocky IV, is back as tough, no-nonsense but relatively ironic LA police officer Marion "Cobra" Cobretti.
Cobra is up against a gang of assassins known as the "New World", whose major activities are axe-clanging, riding motorbikes and killing random victims (apparently an equal opportunity gang, as there are asians and women among the victims).
The initial supermarket scene is memorable, as we learn that Cobra prefers to "put away psychos" (read: shoot multiple times) rather than dealing with them.
More importantly, as the gang sets its sights on hapless Nielsen (a fashion model), Cobra turns into a lean killing machine that despises sociological analysis of crime ie "tell it to the judge...we put them away and they let them out".
Compared to Cobra, even Bush could pass as rabidly left-wing.
In the end he is able to single handedly kill all gang members and even get the girl as a bonus.
Overall a low body count, compensated by an intense performance by Sly, some interesting weapons, memorable lines (see review title, plus Cobra's views on society and justice) and an unforgettable ending among California's orange orchards.
An interesting addition to a DVD collection, especially indicated for Sly connoisseurs.

5 out of 5 stars A Cop above The Law.......2006-11-10

Sly is the ultimate cop in this movie. He goes above and beyond his call of duty to protect the innocent. Even when his superiors tell him to chill out and how they want the job done. He ignores them and does things his way. And thats the only way. Especially when it comes to dealing with low life criminals.

5 out of 5 stars Eating pizza with scissors. The Cobra style. .......2006-06-13

This movie is so bad that you have to love it, from the opening scene in the super market, to the motorcycle/car chase at the end of the movie. This movie has got it all. Sly is the archetype of a stale, tough on the outside, warm on the inside hero. The one liners are sick. For instance when the super market is threatened to be blown to pieces Sly says, "Go ahead, I don't shop here."

As for Brigitte Nielsen, what a wonderful little (or tall) actress she is. I especially like the part in the parking garage, where she is fighting for her life. I found it all so believable. I really think she should have gotten an Oscar in 1986 for this movie. Why not? Judi Dench received an academy award for Shakespeare in Love and she was only in it for five minutes. Here we have eighty-seven minutes of sheer genius.

Last but not least, I love the Bounty Hunter from the X-Files as the lead villain. What a wonderful job he did, because he had to really work outside his acting realm to be in this film. I also loved the Bounty Hunter's minions, all very upset blue-collar workers who wanted to be loved. So they joined a serial killer cult!! I love this movie! I love the Zombie Squad! I love the 80's music in this movie! Why can't Cobra just come over my house and have some Famous Amos cookies with me?!

4 out of 5 stars Psycho?.......2006-06-07

A "get what you pay for" Dirty Harry clone in which Sly tosses out a few too many tough guy one-liners, basically. Perhaps I'm over-analyzing the thing, but watch closely as buttoned-down Andrew Robinson, best known for his "Scorpio" serial sniper in Clint's original vigilante cop hit referenced above, has a moment when, after being accosted by Sly's Cobretti, snarls, "HE'S the psycho!!" A clever intentional line? who knows? lol

5 out of 5 stars A place in my heart!.......2006-11-06

For me these G.I. Joe cartoons will always hold a special place in my heart. I can remember as a boy watching these and then playing with my Joe figures in the backyard. These kinds of cartoons are missing from TV today. It is a shame. I spent a lot of my childhood watching this cartoon and the seasons that followed.
Pick this up for your little boy... and take some time to watch it for yourself... Even if it is for the 100th time.

4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......2005-11-28

I have to say, even with a non-hi-def t.v this dvd comes through with perfect picture quality. The only downside I have found is the constant interuptions of the "We'll returen to.." and the "now back To" let alone the credits and sumaries for the episodes. It get's a little old having to skip through them. I still own the original in the over sized box, and that's the only thing I've found between the two that has me enjoying the video from time to time. But as I said for quality and sound there's no better than this DVD. Can't wait to get the seasons, yeah i'm that far behind.

5 out of 5 stars A Retro Cartoon.......2005-11-04

G.I. Joe was my favourite cartoon of all time. Although the female roles are few and far between I always loved G.I. Joe for more than just that.

I guess Sargent Conrad S "Duke" Hauser was the first fictional character that I ever had a crush on.

I am also a purist when it comes to cartoons like this and that the version of G.I. Joe that DIC came up with can never measure up to the Marvel/Sunbow version.

5 out of 5 stars The "Snowjob" theory..............2004-12-14

"They will fight for freedom whenever there's trouble, G.I. Joe is there. G.I. Joe!! Great American Hero. G.I. Joe is there".

With the beginning of these simple lyrics my Saturday mornings were never the same. I would rush to the television with my box of Frosted Flakes and pensively wait until I would see the blue of Cobra's shirts. Excitement would build, and I would be ready for the most engaging, most entertaining, most spectacular cartoon of the 80s. While some would follow as being "great" shows as well, G.I. Joe was the one that took the cake for young me. I would sing the songs, play with my figurines, and imagine that Cobra was crawling through my backyard ready to be attacked at any moment by my band of American rebels.

Ahhh, that was the life. Years later and I dare say "years" later, I found this series on Amazon, and I had to immediately purchase the set. To begin with, it came with an action figure, and my inner-child was already screaming on the floor begging my wife to buy it for me. When I got it home, I nervously opened the box, unsure as to what other memories of my childhood may escape the vault, I prepared for a cheap version of my childhood delight. To my surprise, it was outstanding. This is a great buy for anyone that remembers this program as well as I did growing up.

To begin, the transfer is outstanding. The sound is beautiful and it nearly felt as if those pesky gun-lasers were firing out of my television. It even includes (which some may find annoying) the original commercial breaks, which I only found more nostalgic. The two five-part "films" represented some of my favorite moments of G.I. Joe history. For those of you unfamiliar with the essentials of G.I. Joe, I have compiled a small list that will not only help you as you gather more about this program, but also as you buy this series.

1) There is a G.I. Joe named "Snowjob".

2) Cobra's weaponry never pierces the Joe's machines, yet only one shot from the G.I. Joes can send a Cobra vehicle into a million pieces.

3) More weaponry is used in one episode than the entire Iraq conflict

4) Destro's head will not rust, even in the rain.

5) Cobra is one of the most brilliant terrorist organizations around. Their knowledge of science is impeccable and should be studied more often in the college setting. The G.I. Joes do not have such smarts, but they can surely beat up the Cobra plan in a heartbeat.

6) Cobra infantry do not know how to aim.

7) No laser-bullet is wasted by a G.I. Joe.

8) Yes, there is a three way going on between Destro, Major Blood, and the Baroness (and later possibly Dr. Mindbender).

9) Every time (without question) the G.I. Joes do something good, they have to shout "YOOO JOE" no matter how many good things they hear in a matter of minutes.

10) I repeat, there is a G.I. Joe named "Snowjob" (Is anyone else laughing hysterically?)

Overall, this was a beautiful series that finally got the respect that it deserved. Thank you RINO for releasing this amazing package and for the products that you continually revitalize. G.I. Joe was a life-altering series, and I cannot wait to get my hands on more!

5 out of 5 stars Childhood memories relived here.......2004-12-01

This was a cool cartoon, especially considering that it was competing against the widely popular comic book, which had an on-going storyline, the characters were pretty true to the comics, most of the time, the 1983 cartoon itself was pretty colorful & fast paced, as was the following 1984 one, the series that started in 1985 lost its origin & focused on less important characters, but the 1983 & 1984 mini-series was great with all the great characters we love, now my question is this>>> where is the live motion picture, below are my pick of actors that I think should or could be casted in a live action film, they are as follows>>

Rutger Hauer(Ladyhawke) as Duke
Scarlett Johansson as Scarlett
Wesley Snipes as Stalker
Ray Park (Darth Maul) as Snake Eyes
Ving Rhames as Roadblock
Scott Glenn as Gung-Ho
Jude Law as Hawk
Jim Cavisel (Passoin of Christ) as Flash
Eric Bana (Troy) as Clutch
Hugh Jackman as Flint
Diane Lane or Angelina Jolie as Lady J
Rodney Grant(Dances with Wolves) as Spirit

Anyone as Cobra Commander since he has no identity
The Rock as Destro
Catherine Zeta Jones as Baroness
Jet Li as Storm Shadow
Anyone as Firefly
Willem Dafoe as Major Bludd

5 out of 5 stars not a graphich as the pyhton triology but still good.......2007-04-25

This movie is supposed to be somewhat of a sequel to curse of the Komudo according to other reviews I read about it. Most of the people gave it real bad the most they gave was a 3. These people aparently did not grow up watching all the classic by movies especially al the Anaconda rips of. Why thise movie might not be as graphic as the R rated snake movies such as boa versuss pyhton it still has a decent action seuqence thenomial acting. More guns going of than at the battle of Gettysburg. This movie has some mild creature violence people getting eatten getting crused to death occasional stuff like that. As a result this movie might not be appropriate or may be questionable to kids under the age of thirteen depending on what there parent or guardians think is appropriate for some one there age. there is one midly gore part with leeches and a komdo blowing up aftert it swallows a gernade there is barely any gore in this movie. If you like this I also recommend you see the python movies. For those of you that saw lake placid a movie studio has shoot a sequel to lake placid called lake placid 2 which will air this saturday at 9:00 PM Florida time and and get done around 11:00 PM florida times scifi channel has alot more commerical break compared to that of cartoon network and other chanels and scifi channels commerical breaks tend to be very length usually about 4 to 6 minutes per break and they have on average about once every ten to 20 minutes. Those you that are interested rent this at blockbuster and watch lake placid 2 this Saturday evening on Scifi channel. A word of advice if buy this dvd used don not buy it in new mint or like mint conditon or new conditon get in like new condition if possibloe because if its in better condition than like new it can be pricy it can cost about $22 to $40 for one copy of this if it has been taken care of well enough and the person does not know what a resonable selling price for its is or is trying to get more money than what it's worth.

2 out of 5 stars Laughing vs. Cringing.......2007-02-09

Well, first off, it's pretty obvious that the marketers for this less than good film thought that they could capitalize on the success of Alien vs. Predator. With the "snazzy" KVC on the disc. I hate to tell them, but the film is mis-named as it is. It's really a bunch of bad actors vs. bad CGI of a komodo dragon and a cobra. Who wins, who loses? Well, the viewer loses. That's for sure.

The aforementioned bad actors run around, alternately going after the monsters and running for their lives. They shoot countless bullets, including maybe 30 or so from a 15-round magazine gun...this happens more than once. I can't really complain about that, though. We see inaccuracies like that all the time.

Anyway, overall a pretty bad movie. Only a few interesting scenes. And I believe Michael Pare was asleep for most of the filming.

1 out of 5 stars oh.........my...........god..................2007-01-06

this movie is sssssssssssssssssssooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad every time some 1 swears this ridiculous "squak" sound attemps 2 cut it out and since this is a (completly stupid) seequal 2 "curse of the komodo" they got some of the origonal actors from "COTK" (curse of the komodo)and got them 2 play different characters in "kvc" (komodo vs cobra)!!!!!!!!!!!They also stole lines and scenes from "COTK". The actors spend half the time shooting at the monsters ( witch look ssssssssooooooo fake)when they should be running away!!!!!!!!! It doesent even connect with "COTK" THIS FILM SHOULD BE RATED "R" FOR RIDICULOUS, OR SHOULD COME WITH A WARNING LABLE SAYING , WARNING: EXTREMLY CRAPPY!!!!!AVOID AT ALL COSTS !!!! AVOID!!AVOID!! AVOID!!

3 out of 5 stars Its ok, ill give it that..........2006-12-27

Well, giving this film as much credit it deserves, i say it gets about a D average. Some acting good, most bad. The CGI on the snake was... well, suprisingly acceptable, but they didn't get the komodo down very well. The feet on the komodo dragon looked so stupid... the toes didn't move at all through the whole thing... but, what do you expect.
But hell, at least the cover looks cool for a DVD collection, i say check this one out if you have a high toleration for bad acting and cgi effects, you just might enjoy it.

3 out of 5 stars Silly Sequel.......2006-11-06

An environmentalist group has learned of animal testing being done on a remote island near Bora Bora. They bring a journalist, hire a boat, and set out to investigate with the idea of exposing the unethical treatment of the animals. They get more than they bargained for when they discover that the experiments have created giant Komodo dragons (although only one shows up for the big battle) and a giant cobra.

They soon link up with the lone survivor of the research team and learn the whole story of what is going on. Meanwhile the military is learning about what is going on and are trying to put a lid on things and hush it up. Monsters, civilians, and a military coverup. Put them all together and you just have to sit and see who survives and just what happens to those who don't. The ending is a little better than I was expecting but the title battle was very disappointing (much different than in Boa vs Python where the point was to get one to defeat the other).

This is a semi sequel to Curse of the Komodo. The storyline mostly follows the earlier movie and uses some of the same sets. However, the Komodo lizards look quite different and some of the original cast returns in all-new rolls. This can make things a little confusing at first. Also we now have a giant cobra (don't know how it got on the island). This cobra seems to live underwater. Not only that, sometimes it is in fresh water and sometimes in salt water. This is a silly film. In one scene, one of the characters decides the way to defend against bullet-proof monsters is to carry a length of bamboo. But as silly as it is there is some charm to this. Maybe it lies in anticipation of how bad it will be. Anyway, the title should put you in the right expectation for this film. If you want a silly monster film you could certainly do worse.

In their last film together, director Werner Herzog drew from actor Klaus Kinski a performance that grounds Kinski's volcanic passions with a new gravity--perhaps age was bringing Kinski down to earth. He plays Cobra Verde, a notorious Brazilian bandit, whom a plantation owner hires to keep his slaves in line. After Cobra Verde impregnates all his daughters, the owner and the authorities conspire to send the bandit to Africa to reopen the slave trade. They expect him to be killed, but through a mixture of his own cunning and the volatile politics of West Africa, Cobra Verde ends up leading an army of women to overthrow the king. Cobra Verde is disjointed, but that doesn't mean it isn't worth watching. Kinski is magnetic in scene after remarkable scene, and though the whole isn't satisfying, the parts certainly are. --Bret Fetzer

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars "I can not hear what you are saying, for the thunder that you are.".......2007-06-08

The last and least of his volatile collaborations with Werner Herzog, Cobra Verde is possibly the one movie where Klaus Kinski isn't the maddest person on screen - he's out-madded by not one but two African kings who make him look a model of logic and reason: when even Werner Herzog describes one actor as a "very odd man," you'd better believe it. After a hypnotic opening the first third is sluggish at best, but once Kinski's South American barefoot bandit ("I don't trust shoes") reaches Africa to reopen the slave trade - more in his employers' hope that he'll be killed than any belief he might succeed - it's a rollicking yarn and the most spectacular of Herzog's films, ending with an image that's almost Fitzcarraldo in microsm as Kinski struggles to pull a longboat into the sea while a native cripple watches him. It's a mad film in many ways, with Kinski finding himself leading an army of Amazons because the men simply aren't good enough warriors, but like all Herzog films it has its rewards, including some striking and haunting imagery, not least a shot of Kinski in the sea watching the sky.

Sadly, this has the least satisfying transfer of any of Anchor Bay's Herzog films - acceptable, but with niggling image problems, particularly in the early scenes. Extras are limited, though Herzog's audio commentary is, as always, captivating.

3 out of 5 stars In My Country I was a Snake Myself.......2007-04-08

Klaus Kinski, always on crazy duty, here shows up as Cobra Verde, a slave leader who seriously ticks off his master by going on an impregnation spree and is thus sent to Africa on a suicide mission. His stated goal is to revive the slave trade but everybody involved knows that he is being sent there to die. Verde is only too excited to get dressed up in his Christopher Columbus get up and sail the ocean blue, not bothered in the least by the fact that nobody ever expects to see him again. Once there he has some initial luck with the natives until it runs out and he is kidnapped for being white. Quickly thereafter he is rescued by a man who feels as though the throne is his and wants Verde to help him seize it. So just like Emilio Estevez did with those darned Ducks, Verde takes a group of losers and transforms them into winners, only instead of being good at hockey these guys are turned into a maniacal killing machine.

Since this is a Werner Herzog movie we know that the focus will be on the uncaring ways of this Earth of ours. Both leaders, the plantation owner in Brazil and the king in Africa, are shown to be the same despite the color of their skin. They both lack morals and believe their own hype. But Herzog isn't interested in building these guys up as evil doers; his films don't need pre-packaged villains because to him we are all villains. When the plantation owner bemoans the fact that he has yet to impregnate every mulatto girl in his fields it is not with the intention of painting him a racist or a rapist. Rather the point is that all men in power are the same. They always want more and will stop at nothing to get it. Verde is an interesting character because throughout the film he is constantly in a position of power, always lording over a large number of blacks, and yet appears to be uncorrupted by it. We never learn his motivations, whatever they may be. The final shot is very telling however; as Verde runs away from a cripple he is unable to make his getaway because he can't move a boat from the beach to the water. Here is a man who overthrew a king, but only because of those he ruled over. Without them he can't even escape the hell he created.

The charge of racism has been leveled against Herzog on more than one occasion and this film couldn't have helped. Dozens of extremely dark blacks fill the landscape as slaves who live under the boot of a white man. A white man who spends his days teaching them how to fight like savages. That said, and let me be very clear; this film is an ugly glimpse into the primitive nature of humanity not an attempt to proclaim white superiority. If the roles of the races look stereotypical it is because stereotypes are based on facts. There is all the difference in the world ever between being racist and reflecting a racist world. In the film the whites view the blacks as nothing more than slaves and sex toys, and the blacks view the whites as the devil. I would say that that is a fair assessment of race relations circa 1850. I liked "Cobra Verde" but in no way did I love it. The first 30 minutes are dull but after that the plot gets rolling. There are also some awesome shots of the African countryside which become even more impressive when Herzog fills them with the sheer number of extras he had on hand. Not one of Herzog's greatest films, but a strong, unblinking look into our past. ***1/4

4 out of 5 stars A fascinating look at some African cultures. .......2005-11-13

'Cobra Verde' is at times a confusing and awkward story about a bandit who finds himself trapped within the slave trade business. What begins as a story of a feared outlaw turns out to be a story examining African cultures and the issue of slavery itself. What makes this movie more interesting than other American films about slavery is that the viewer gets to see the other side of the story; the story told from an African viewpoint.
International star Klaus Kinski stars a Cobra Verde. He is a feared bandit whom many people fear. When he appears in a small town, all the people runs inside their houses becasue they are scared to death of him. Many things are missing from Cobra Verde's past. How did he become such a feared bandit? The movie does not answer that question. Through a series of odd circumstances, he is eventually put into the slavery trade business by a group of rich aristocrats.
He is sent to Africa, where it is hoped he will be killed because of the slave trade conflicts going on there. What happens is th exact opposite. He gains the trust of the African villagers and eventually trains an army to kill and enemy foe. All the while the viewers are treated to an inside look at some African customs, religions, superstitions, and society. A beautifully made film that is a little marred by changes in the sequences of the story and many things missing from the plot. Even though 'Cobra Verde' contains flaws here and there, it has one of the most memorable death scenes I've ever seen. Bravo to Klaus Kinski.

    5 out of 5 stars The final Herzog/Kinski collaboration.......2004-12-15

Klaus Kinski, the mercurial actor and star of hundreds of films both big and small, attained his grandest stature when working with German director Werner Herzog. They collaborated on several films together, including "Aguirre, the Wrath of God," "Fitzcarraldo," "Woyzeck," "Nosferatu," and "Cobra Verde." I've seen three of these films now, and the formula is the same in all three. Kinski plays a driven personality who attempts to perform some grand feat that no one else can achieve. In "Aguirre" he set out with a contingent of Spanish soldiers to find the fabled city of gold. "Fitzcarraldo" saw Kinski playing a wealthy rubber baron in Brazil in search of finding a way to build an opera house on the banks of the Amazon. "Cobra Verde" continues the tradition with Kinski starring as a former South American plantation owner and bandit leader in search of a way to restart the African slave trade against crushing odds. There's something magnetic about Kinski in these Herzog movies that makes you believe no other actor could play the character. Perhaps it is his volcanic personality shining through onscreen, a personality that Herzog had great difficulties in restraining. Whatever the case, film fans could do worse than spend an evening with a Herzog/Kinski collaboration.

In "Cobra Verde" Kinski plays Francisco Manoel da Silva, a man ruined when family catastrophes and a bad drought cost him his plantation. In an attempt to recover his property and put his life back together, he takes a grinding job with a mining company. When the owners try to shortchange him after a hard day's work, he stomps off in a rage and begins a career as the notorious bandit Cobra Verde. While we don't see his subsequent career as a robber and killer, we do learn that all of Brazil--indeed, all of South America--has at least heard of his great exploits. Fortunately for Kinski's character, the wealthy sugar baron Don Octavio Coutinho (Jose Lewgoy) doesn't recognize him when Cobra Verde somehow calms a dangerous runaway slave. Impressed by the man's talents, Coutinho hires da Silva to work as an overseer on his enormous estates. Everything seems to go gangbusters until da Silva impregnates every single one of Don Coutinho's mulatto daughters. The sugar baron goes ballistic, and gets even angrier when he discovers he is dealing with the great Cobra Verde. Coutinho and his fellow kingpins devise a plan to rid themselves of this potentially dangerous force. They decide to send him to Africa.

Why? Because the land barons in South America want more slaves in order to work more land. There are obstacles to the mission, including a ban on the importation of slaves and a hostile African king who kills all of the European mediators. Da Silva knows none of this, or very little of it, before agreeing to go to Africa. He doesn't have much of a choice since the sugar barons will kill him if he refuses. His ship sets him ashore at Elmina, a gigantic barracoon on the coast of present day Ghana. Cobra Verde discovers that an attack on the fortress wiped out all but one man, a chatty free African who agrees to help da Silva negotiate with the King of Dahomey for more slaves. And it works, at first, when da Silva convinces the representatives from Dahomey to trade slaves for new rifles. Then problems set in. The king brings Kinski's character before him and threatens him with death. Da Silva escapes and makes an alliance with a prince who wishes to take over the throne. Thanks to Cobra Verde's manic military training of thousands of African women, the prince captures the throne and allows the slave trade to continue. Once again, the situation deteriorates after a time, forcing Cobra Verde to flee from Elmina with nowhere to go. The last shot we see of him is one of the more memorable scenes I've had the pleasure to see in a film. It stays with you.

The plot of "Cobra Verde" isn't nearly as interesting as Herzog's visuals and Kinski's performance. As always, Kinski captures emotional extremes extraordinarily well. He's subdued when Don Coutinho shows him the brutality of the plantation or when he converses with the Don's daughters. When training the prince's army, he's practically frothing at the mouth. Kinski is never anything but entirely believable in both situations. Of course, it takes a performer of Kinski's caliber to stand out in films where the visuals are often more important than the human elements. Such is the case with "Cobra Verde." I have two favorite scenes in the film, but there are many just as memorable. The first situation takes place when da Silva refuses to visit the king because he says he must stay where he has one foot in the ocean. When the king's men tie da Silva up, they take a jug, fill it with seawater, and tie it around his foot for the long trip inland. There's your one foot in the water! The second scene involves sending messages from Elmina to the new prince. A line of Africans extending for miles along the coast, each man separated by a few feet, send codes by waving enormous red flags. Herzog's camera lingers on this incredible imagery for minutes at a time.

Included on the disc are a trailer and a commentary track with Herzog. The director discusses his tempestuous relationship with Kinski (always a fan favorite), his experiences with Bruce Chatwin and how he convinced this author to let him use "The Viceroy of Ouidah" as source material for the film, and the difficulties of shooting in so many harsh environments. While I liked "Cobra Verde," and think it is obligatory for Klaus Kinski fans, I much prefer "Aguirre" and "Fitzcarraldo" to this film. Still, this one will make you think long after that last, lingering shot on the beach.

    5 out of 5 stars Haunting..........2003-02-21

COBRA VERDE marked the fiinal collaboration (not counting the director's elegiac documentary MEIN LIEBSTER FEIND) between Werner Herzog and actor Klaus Kinski. It's one of their most haunting works, quietly epic in its scope, fueled by gorgeous cinematography and and an enigmatic lead performance. Herzog's commentary is wonderful. COBRA VERDE is one of those films I find myself rewatching in bits, if only to recapture for a moment the funereal magic of a lost world.

4 out of 5 stars Not so Dark.......2006-05-09

Joe Pesci is a bag man for a mob family. His current contract is to deliver a bag containing the heads of eight rivals. This should be a simple delivery but circumstances force a bag switch. Now Pesci has a bag of clothes while a pre-med student has the heads. To make matters worse, the student has just driven into Mexico with his girlfriend's family. Only one small clue can help Pesci track down his cargo before a contract is taken out on himself.

What follows are typically improbable comedy situations that have the heads moving around and being seen by unreliable witnesses while more and more people get involved in trying to straighten out the mess. This gives various characters a chance to develop and show their true mettle. Things begin to get really out of hand but it is successfully tied up at the end with the viewer feeling pretty good about how it all worked out.

I expected this to be a darker comedy with plenty of black humor but it really wasn't. Considering the plot device this was a surprisingly happy and upbeat film. Pesci is very good as the bag man but his role is a support role as best (I guess I had also been expecting to see more of him). But although things were not quite as I had thought they would be it was still a very good movie experience. Check it out.

    3 out of 5 stars Fitfully funny.......2005-07-20

Although the film begins strongly, the yuks come less often as this movie drags on. The performances are also a bit off-key: Dyan Canon's screechy and hysterical role is wearisome, Kristy Swanson is little more than eye candy, George Hamilton is stiff and unconvincing, David Spade isn't animated enough, and so on. The movie requires an unusually large suspension of disbelief: For instance, these may be the only corpses that don't stink or attract insects. There are enough funny moments to prevent viewing the movie from being a total waste of time but not enough of those moments to make a viewing worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars brilliant and quite funny.......2005-02-25

Joe Pesci is hilarious in this movie
the movie has such sick humor that it's funny (only in the movies though)

the cast is picked out quite well
the idea of the story is quite creepy and amusing
the situation with having the heads and trying to give them back is hilarious
just an all out hilarious movie
glad I got this on dvd
it's worth the watch over and over and over and over again for years to come

4 out of 5 stars JOE PESCI IS FUNNY AS ALWAYS.......2004-07-09

A MOB HITMAN [JOE PESCI] LOSES A DUFFEL BAG THAT CONTAINS THE HEADS OF 8 DEAD PEOPLE AND HE GOES ON A QUEST TO GET IT BACK. GOOD IDEA AND IT WORKS OUT PRETTY WELL. OTHER THAN JOE PESCI, WHO'S FUNNY AS ALWAYS, DAVID SPADE HAD SOME FUNNY MOMENTS AS WELL. IF YOU NEED SOME GOOD LAUGHS, GET THIS MOVIE NOW.

    2 out of 5 stars poor.......2004-03-20

I really didn't like 8 Heads in a Duffel Bag--though the premise is a good one. It's just that Schulman's writing didn't quite work out. The dialogue was stilted and made little sense and there was a little too much ludicrous comedy in the film. Pesci gave a good performance, but far from its best. It was just a poor effort.
