Considered by many to be Shakespeare's worst play, Titus Andronicus is a bloodthirsty tragedy full of villainous heroes and bottomless revenge--hardly the stuff of big-screen directorial debuts, it would seem. Yet Julie Taymor dives headfirst into moviemaking with Titus, a spectacular adaptation that manages to find beauty and humor in the piles of carnage.

The story begins simply enough by Shakespearean standards: celebrated Roman warrior Titus Andronicus (Anthony Hopkins) returns from a hard-won victory to bury his slain sons and avenge their deaths by killing the eldest son of his enemy, Tamora, queen of the Goths (Jessica Lange). Tamora responds by seducing the impressionable new emperor and setting all of Rome into a downward spiral of revenge, madness, and death.

Taymor, who won a Tony for her Broadway production of The Lion King, throws all her theatrical sensibilities at the story--armies are exquisitely choreographed, blood is shed so beautifully that it hardly seems real, and characters are costumed in symbolic combinations of ancient Roman and 20th-century garb. She plays up the dark comedy at every opportunity, lending a carnival flavor to the story's most gruesome moments. Excellent performances from Hopkins (whose deranged Titus is more than a little reminiscent of Hannibal Lecter), Lange, and the supporting cast help make the endless treachery credible. --Claire Campbell
Description
Academy Award winners Anthony Hopkins and Jessica Lange ignite the screen in a strikingly original "coup de cinema" (The New York Times). "Titus" is a "wild ride" (Chicago Tribune) - a shocking journy into the depths of the human heart - a place where vengeance and passion reign supreme. A film by Julie Taymor, acclaimed creator and director of Broadway's "The Lion King."

Riding Giants is more than another blissful surfing movie. It's an outstanding documentary about one era in American alternative lifestyles, when surfing was well-suited to a radical culture of social dropouts. Using an amazing array of amateur film clips, shot for the most part in Hawaii and California from the late 1950s and early '60s, director Stacy Peralta traces the rise of surfing's appeal to young men looking to test themselves in an unorthodox (and sexy) milieu--of "living life to the fullest," as former surfer-turned-screenwriter John Milius (Big Wednesday) puts it at one point. Lengthy chapters on the glories of Oahu's Makaha and the "superstition and dread" that accompanied the big-wave challenge of Waimea Bay are riveting and sometimes heroic, particularly told through the memories of surf legend Greg Noll. Great material, too, about the deadly wonders of surfing Mavericks, California, where the rocks will get one if the violent tides don't. --Tom Keogh

Description

From its early Hawaiian roots to its current status as a recreational lifestyle enjoyed worldwide, bigwave surfing is given the definitive exploration by acclaimed director Stacy Peralta (Dogtown and Z-Boys).

5 out of 5 stars A willing suspension of disbelief.......2007-07-04

I do not claim to be a surfer (nor do I wish that I led the life of a beach bum) but I am forever fascinated by the men and women who tackle surfing those giant waves all over the world. This DVD is an excellent portrayal of the early history and current events in the world of board surfing giant waves. The story is well presented and the cinematography is simply mezmerizing. More than likely you missed this movie (as it is not probable that it came to many theaters). I first caught the tail end of the movie on cable t.v. and I was hooked. This DVD will not disappoint those who would like to know more about big wave board surfing. This is one DVD that I would willingly watch again and again with friends...but I am not willing to "share". Get your own and you'll be pleased with what you have.

5 out of 5 stars Reflections in personal truth, spirituality, harmony.......2007-06-03

This excellent film is more than its suberb weaving together of the history of surfing; the fantastic footage, archival and new; or the great interviews of those legends who made surfing what it is today. This film culminates in a deep rich understanding for the viewer about how surfing represented a personal journey for the individual. A journey of transformation. A moving beyond where you started to deep soul reflection about who you are in this world and what you are here doing. A story different for each individual portrayed, but also similar in their personal growth. Their respect for the nature, the ocean, and the wave. Their harmony with the surf, reflected deeper in their harmony with themselves and often life. Because of that understanding conveyed in this film, I found it gave me the awareness of surfing as faith, harmony, and transformative expression, both personal and universal.

4 out of 5 stars Watch this in HD.......2007-05-21

I'm not a Surfer, nor do I follow the culture or know anything about it. I do know about, and am a fan of interesting and insightful DVD's. Last night I was watching TV when the program I attempted to watch started to bore me. I changed the channel and found Riding Giants in HD, it was just starting so I decided to watch it for little bit. It was 1 A.M. when I started watching it...I planned on going to sleep but was captured by the story telling and legend of past surfers. I've never surfed before or had a particular interest in surfing, but this DVD just got me. I'd recommend it for sure. The waves in HD are absolutely stunning.

4 out of 5 stars A Giant Documentary.......2007-03-31

I'm not a surfer, although I tried surfing once and got horribly sunburned. Until this video, that was the extent of my knowledge and interest in surfing. I caught the previews for this on the Discovery Channel and set the DVR to record it in HD. I started watching it, and my wife, who is usually not interested in this type of sports video, migrated into the living room and sat spellbound like me. The craziness of the early days of surfing, the board development, and the challenge to survive giant waves are woven into a fascinating documentary. The photography, especially shots taken from inside killer waves, is stunningly gorgeous. If you are a fan of Warren Miller ski films, this should be for you. I purchased the DVD from Amazon so I could share it with my children and friends.

You really get to know the people who made the sport into an industry. The side stories really fit into the main theme very well and keep the interest at a very high level. It makes you feel like part of the family of surfers by the way you get into the lives of those who lived the surfing life. I live about 90 miles away from Half Moon Bay and when the Mavericks Surf Contest was postponed/cancelled this year, my wife and I took notice and even felt bad for the surfers who wouldn't be able to compete this year.

If you want a video that chronicles the lives of some pretty wacky people who should all be dead right now but have survived because of their inventiveness. If you want a video that will hold your interest because of the story line and inspires you with awesome photography, get this one.

5 out of 5 stars The best film on surfing ever!.......2007-03-27

This movie by Stacy Peralta came on one night on one of my HD movie channels. Lucky for me. I caught it right from the start and recorded it. I was glued to my TV and watched it 2 more times in the next few days. Then I went and got the DVD. I have never surfed a day in my life. I did grow up street skating in NYC back in the 80s and in some small way I feel I can relate to this culture. I was never a "sports" guy. I always hated team sports and the jock mentality. Skating attracted me due to it's lack of such "jocks". Surfing it seems is very much the same, with nice people I can imagine meeting and talking with. Everyone seemed nice and just out for having fun. The story was peppered with tragedies which I suspected it would when I started watching. This was not glossed over in any way and was told with care and respect for those who paid the ultimate price. The sport, if it can be called that, seems to attract people who are more like artists to me than fanatics, or nuts. The way surfing was spoken of by many of them with such awe, care, love, and respect leeds me to believe that it is to most who do it way more than just a thrilling set of skills and a momentary rush. The film was directed masterfully and edited in such a way as to truly convey the energy of surfing. I can only imagine how real surfing must feel. If the film could get me all charged up and excited, actual surfing must be 1000 times more exciting and alluring. I recomed this for anyone who can appreciate a good film, a good documentary, and can relate to good whoolesome people with of love of what they do and the courage to follow their bliss all they way, and with no fear.

The comedic chronicles of Christopher Titus's profoundly dysfunctional family came to an end with Titus's third season (2001-2002), and while it's not known if Titus and his co-producers knew that the bell was tolling for their risky show, the go-for-broke tone of these episodes certainly suggests that they weren't going to leave the airwaves without raising a ruckus. How else to explain such hit-the-brakes storylines as "The Trial," which has Titus's mother (played in this season by Connie Stevens) facing a jury for the murder of her abusive husband (with former spouse Ken Titus, played by the consistently uproarious Stacey Keach, itching to testify against her), or the verboten romance between Tommy (David Shawtraw) and Titus's pregnant sister (Elizabeth Berkely) in "Tommy's Crush," or the two-parter "Insanity Genetic," where Titus's fears that his family's instability might threaten his relationship with Erin (Lost's Cynthia Watros) land him in jail. The episodes compiled in this set are raw, occasionally taboo, and definitely not TV Family Night material (although maybe they should be), but series fans and those looking for comedy with some emotional bite will appreciate that this underappreciated series has finally made it to DVD. The set includes commentary by Titus and co-producers Brian Hargrove and Jack Kenney, and interviews with Keach, Watros, and Zack Ward, who played Titus's brother Dave. --Paul Gaita

Description

This half-hour comedy chronicles the hilarious world of Christopher Titus and his totally messed-up poor white trash family. Between his drunken father, his dimwitted brother, and his goody-goody best friend, it's amazing Titus is alive, let alone engaged to a "normal" girl.

4 out of 5 stars Any Ending is Painful.......2007-05-15

After three seasons of profoundly dysfunctional family antics, comedian Christopher Titus' hilarious comedy series comes to a close. "Titus" is the very funny half-hour comedy that chronicles the life of Christopher Titus (Himself) and his messed-up family including his loving girlfriend Erin (Cynthia Watros), his clueless brother Dave (Zack Ward), his emotional friend Tommy (David Shatraw) and his drunken father Ken (Stacy Keach). In its third and final season, Titus must also deal with Erin's troubled niece Amy (Rachel Roth) and his "perfect" sister Shannon (Elizabeth Berkley). "Titus" is the outrageously funny Fox comedy based on comedian Christopher Titus' stand up routine. Each episode is narrated by Titus from his "neutral space" who offers some side-splitting comments and humorous flashbacks from his childhood and teenage years. The comedy series features some great humor and good comic performances. The amusing interplay between Christopher and his father is one of the show's biggest highlights. The third season includes such amusing episodes like "Tommy's Not Gay", "Shannon's Song", "Grandma Titus", "After Mrs. Shafter" and "The Protector".

Though Fox cancelled "Titus", you can once again experience all its edgy humor on DVD with "Titus: Seasons 3". The final 21 episodes of "Titus" are presented in their original full screen format. This 4-Disc box set contains a clear picture quality and a good 2.0 Dolby Digital sound. Its special features include interviews with stars Cynthia Watros, Zack Ward and Stacy Keach, over 25 minutes of bloopers and audio commentaries with star Christopher Titus and series creators Brian Hargrove and Jack Kenny on three episodes. Overall, "Titus: Season 3" obtains satisfying "B".

5 out of 5 stars Great Show.......2007-04-28

As far as I am concerned this was one of the funniest series that ever aired on television. Chris Titus was a comedy genius who lived a life that would have destroyed some people and he turned it into a great show. The series on dvd is a great buy and well worth the price. It is the kind of thing you can watch over and over again and still laugh.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-01-23

i've been wanting this since show was canceled. its just too bad there isn't anything beyond this season. many kudos and such.

5 out of 5 stars Capstone To A Perfect Series.......2006-12-07

Season three of "Titus" is the darkest, but the best, of the three. The show was extraordinary and daring in the exploration of taboo and politically incorrect subjects, and while it was a shame it ended after only three seasons, the entire package when seen as a whole (especially when seen in order) is perfect. While I had always been disappointed about the cancellation, the bonus interview with Zack Ward (who is much smarter than "Dave") had the insight about the perfect whole, and I think he is right: the show ended on a high note, and will always be looked at positively in retrospect, unlike many shows that live on past their prime.

The third season deals with the darkest of all possible subjects, taken largely from Christopher Titus' own life. Most difficult is the subject of his mother's insanity and suicide, and coming to terms with the fears that it may be genetic. The episode "Tommy's Not Gay" is also extremely powerful (especially the black and white segments,) but for me the most difficult episode was the final episode "The Protector" which deals with child abuse. While I was never abused, I have seen the aftermath. It is a tragedy of the highest magnitude, and the manner in which "Titus" dealt with it in the final episode is both a cautionary tale to parents and other "protectors" and an indictment of abusers. I thought the resolution in that episode was absolutely perfect: seeing the principal finally allied for good with the ones he was charged to protect was a stunning moment of moral clarity. Heavy stuff, this, but important to see.

"Titus" is an extremely unconventional show, but a show with extreme merit. I can't recommend this series enough.

5 out of 5 stars Comedy set in reality.......2006-08-23

One of the FINEST television writing in existence, bar none.

The "humour" may take some getting used to but the themes / messages covered leaves plenty of food for thought.

4 out of 5 stars Shakespeare's Crutch.......2007-05-07

Take your average Father/Son tale...add alcohol, self-loathing, a mooing step-brother, pride, honesty and a know-it-all/know-nothing childhood friend and you've got the makings of a great show. I would have named it: Dysfunctional Family Feud.

Titus combines real life experiences, physical humor and depressing reality to create a sitcom with a message: It might be broken, but it's family and there's nothing you can do to replace family.

I gave it 4 stars for being brave enough to show the world that sometimes comedy ain't funny. But you'll get the point.

5 out of 5 stars Titus - Seasons 1& 2.......2007-03-15

Buy this, and Season Three. Even my sons and their lady friends liked the DVDs, as the marathons on two seperate weekends should prove. One more show that the network involved should never have cancelled.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2007-01-23

i've been wanting this since show was canceled. its just too bad there isn't anything past season 3

5 out of 5 stars Titus.......2007-01-11

Excellent. For me timeless comedy in a world that is now PC crazy.

Description

In 1898 the US government, led by Theodore Roosevelt (Tom Berenger) back when he was still a young, ambitious Naval Secretary, intervenes on the side of the Cuban rebels in their struggle against Spanish rule. Always ready for action, Roosevelt leaves the confines of the sidelines and forms a volunteer cavalry regiment which later became infamously known as the "Rough Riders." Roosevelt's regiment brings together volunteers from all corners of the nation to fight against a far superior adversary in one of the most rousing victories in American history.

5 out of 5 stars TNT's Rough Riders Review.......2007-06-28

I rated the TV movie a "5" because it was entertainng although it contained a number of historical errors, but I understand how Hollywood wants to romance it up a bit. As a social studies teacher, this is an era that I teach my students when the United States became a world power. Good movie with alot of historical events that drew the U.S. into war with Spain.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best Presidents of the United States of America.......2007-04-18

Rough Riders was a surprise. Did not know much about the life of President Theodore Roosevelt, and knew little if anything as to the events that lead Americans to fight for the independence of Cuba, during the Spanish-American War.

As a Cuban American, I loved watching this film, seeing the efforts of valiant men, willing to give up their lives in search for freedom for a country, just 90 miles away. At some point during the movie, there is a philosophical interchange amongst the characters, where they discuss the reasons that have compelled their actions. They say they are fighting to see fellow men free, but that some think it is all in search of the self interest of a nation that wants Cuba for its sugar. This presented the never ending argument of men sacrificing their lives for ideals, only to be ridiculed by envious people, not willing to sacrifice, and yet ready and willing to put down the efforts of others.

At any rate, it was awesome to know that Theodore Roosevelt was the inspiration behind the war that freed Cuba from the grasps of Spain, but it is with regret that we did not get the same support during the Bay of Pigs, and continue as a nation to be under the grasps of a tyrant, Fidel Castro Ruz.

The movie does a great job in highlighting the 1st US Volunteer Calvary Regiment as a group of heroic men consisting of rich and poor IVY league athletes and leather tough cow pokes, polo players and thieves coming together under the leadership of great men, one Theodore Roosevelt, to overcome and conquer the freedom and independence of Cuba against Spain.

Americans take much for granted when it comes to their heritage, but watching this film gave me the pride of knowing that when I chose to become an American Citizen, I was joining a nation of the land of the free and the home of the brave!

Thanks to this film I now know a bit more about one of the greatest presidents of the United States of America.

5 out of 5 stars We need more movies about Teddy Roosevelt.......2007-03-29

I was really surprised at how good this film was. I was expecting the kinda so-so made for cable stuff that is watchable but not exceptional. This was a whole lot more.

Other people have written some great reviews here. I just want to underline one thing.

Tom Berringer's performance as Teddy Roosevelt was very good. At first I didnt even know it was him. Then when I knew it was him I still was like, I cant believe its Tom Berringer. He really nails the eccentric personality of Roosevelt, and he does it in a way that honors that great Presidents memory. I think this is one of the best performances of his career and when you think about who he was portraying and how great that man was, Berringer nailing it like that shows he was the right man for the job.

The whole cast does a great job, with standouts from Gary Busey, Sam Elliot, and even George Hamilton.

If you like historical films, you should like this one.

Teddy Roosevelt was one of the best Presidents we ever had. Its a shame so few people today have any clue about him.

5 out of 5 stars History and Patroitism in Action Movie.......2007-03-12

Great action movie with many characters real historical figures. Viewers who love their country will feel a sense of pride and patroitism as they view this film. A footnote is that the firearms used in the movie are authenic to era and some to include the machine guns were probably actually used in the actual battle.

5 out of 5 stars WARNING: This Magnificent Film is for Patriotic Americans ONLY! .......2007-03-03

During these most troubling times, when so much in our nation appears to be going so terribly wrong and we are infiltrated and surrounded by Fifth Column "special interest" groups, weak-minded/mealy-mouthed liberals, treason mongers, cowardly, gutless politicians, hoardes of illegal alien invaders, and engulfed by overwhelming mediocrity and the stifling, crippling effects of nation-killing political correctness, there are, every now and again, memorable venues that offer us a brief glimpse of just what this country USED to be made of. "Rough Riders" happens to be one such venue!!! Now, if you are a proud, true-blue, red-blooded, 100% American who loves this country, then this film is a MUST-OWN. If you DON'T fit into this category...well, I would say that you shouldn't waste your time and you can stop reading my review right now. You're certainly not gonna see lib-losers like Tim Robbins, Susan Sarandon, Danny Glover or Jane Fonda here...no way!

Not being much of a television watcher, I missed the original showing of "Rough Riders" (which aired on TNT way back in July of 1997), and it was only by chance that I happened upon the DVD early last summer while doing some shopping at a local store. Already being somewhat of an amatuer military historian and serious Theodore Roosevelt admirer from way back, I immediately bought the DVD, took it home and watched it that night and...WWWWWWWWOOOOOOWWWWWW!!! It had been some time since I had stood up and cheered while watching a movie, but I certainly did so that night! To say that "Rough Riders" was a hard-charging clean breath of fresh air and uplifting would be an major understatement! Amidst the endless sleeze, slime, filth, crud and garbage that oozes endlessly from out of the Hollyweird sewer these days, this glittering gem somehow managed to emerge, albeit, without much publicity (doesn't surprise me at all...given the bold, uncompromising, no-nonsense and entirely pro-conservative/pro-America message that this film broadcasts loud and clear).

Tom Berenger does an outstanding job by literally transforming himself into the one and only Theodore Roosevelt, and without a doubt, this stellar performance is probably the high-water mark of Mr. Berenger's entire career...at least for me it is! Tom brings Old Teethadore back to life in such a vibrant, energetic and larger-than-life (yet very human) performance that after just a few moments, one actually believes that it IS the real Theodore Roosevelt on that screen! Many kudos to Tom for getting this role so right. Of course, Mr. Berenger is surrounded and ably supported by a host of other highly skilled and talented actors, such as Gary Busey, Sam Elliot, the late Brian Keith and even Geoffrey Lewis shows up as well (it's been quite awhile since I'd seen him)! KFI radio talkshow host and military advisor, Capt. Dale Dye, USMC-Ret., is also featured and all put forth exemplary and commendable efforts in this made-for-TV production that really should have been a major theatrical release! A correspondingly heroic and memorable musical score by stalwart western/action-adventure composer, Elmer Bernstein, compliments the film perfectly (by sheer luck, I managed to acquire a copy of the soundtrack...now long out-of-print...from a friend of mine - thank you Mr. Ripley!).

Furthermore, I have already corresponded with Capt. Dye about his involvement in the making of "Rough Riders," thanking him for not only his excellent performance, but for his technical accuracy in getting so right the period uniforms, weaponry, etc. (yes, just as with any other movie production, there are a faux paus and technical discrepancies to be found in the historical timeline and in a few other areas, but set against the totally upbeat, powerful, forceful, feel-good-about-being-an-American projection of this total kick-butt winner, who the heck cares!), but I also wish to send my most heartfelt thanks to conservative director, John Milius, for not allowing the self-proclaimed socialist, Ted Turner, to step in and use his Left-wing influence to ruin this excellent and long untold story about these gutsy American heroes that, unfortunately, have been all but forgotten by so many today...TR and his heroic regiment of Rough Riders (or more correctly, the 1st United States Volunteer Cavalry)!

THIS is film-making at its very best - the way films SHOULD be made and if he were still with us, I'm confident that the great John Wayne would have approved as well! Yep...you can forget all of that multi-culti and homosexual cowboy trash that the morally defunct libs try to push down our throats via the Academy Awards. I have watched "Rough Riders" at least eight times since buying it, and it has been a tremendous joy each and every time! Buy "Rough Riders" ASAP...trust me, you won't regret it!

Long live Col. Theodore Roosevelt and the Rough Riders!!!

What's completely and utterly baffling about Killer Klowns is not the plot--that's rather tidily summed up by the title--but the fact that it got made at all. According to the filmmakers, (the Chiodo brothers: Charles, Edward, and Stephen) all it took to convince the studio was a one-page treatment and a picture of a clown holding a gun. It boggles the mind. Anyway, some killer Klowns descend from outer space and start wrapping their hapless victims in cotton candy for later consumption. Debbie and Mike suspect something's amiss, but who will believe them? The movie's greatest asset is its willingness to play on the inherent creepiness of clowns. The Klowns are grotesque parodies of their big-top cousins, hiding hideous malformed teeth behind terrifying circus makeup. It's impossible to tell if Killer Klowns is truly meant to be scary, but it is compelling in its thoroughness: popcorn, balloon animals, and really big shoes are all used to their fullest effect. The only cast member you'll recognize immediately is veteran character actor John Vernon as Officer Mooney, but keep an eye out for Christopher Titus in a small role as Bob McReed. Then just sit back and stare open-mouthed in bewildered joy. --Ali Davis

Description

Finally the truth about clowns is out! Beneath their smirky sinister grins and wildly patterned clothes are clever killers from out of this world. The "juxtaposition of their toy-store arsenal and malevolent intent proves to be a tasty combination" (Los Angeles Times) in this killer entertainment that will leave you fearing these big-top creatures for good. A spaceshiplooking like a circus tentlands in a field near a small town, signaling the attack of deviant, red-nosed, balloon-twisting psychos from another world who plan to annihilate mankindby turning people into cotton candy! Luckily, the town's teen citizenry decides to fight back and teach the cosmic bozos a lesson. But these klowns are no klutzes, turning popcorn, peanuts and caramel corn into playfulbut deadlyweapons of madcap destruction and mayhem!

Whether you love clowns or hate them, KKFOS belongs in every dvd collection! We get cotton candy cadaver coccoons, alien clown-larva popcorn pop-guns, and flesh-dissolving pies! We even get a boxing glove decapitation scene for added enjoyment! Definitely scary to anyone who already is afraid of clowns.

It's hard to describe this movie - campy, yes, strange, definitely unsettling. But it's the John Massari score that stands out for me. I'm pleased to see that the soundtrack for Killer Klowns is now available. It's worth viewing for the music alone!

"It's like Christmas with guns," is how one happy member of the Soady family describes the opening day of hunting season. Rueben Soady (Jeff Daniels) is on the verge of becoming the oldest member of the entire line of Soady men to have never shot a buck. To change his luck, Rueben tries to convince his father and brother to change some of the time-honored rituals of their annual hunting pilgrimage, but this seems to set off a series of uncanny incidents involving UFOs, cards, backwoods whiskey, flatulence, and possession by native spirits. Escanaba in da Moonlight is a comic homage to hunting in upstate Michigan, written and directed by star Daniels. It's not for everyone--vegetarians, among others, will find its blithe celebration of deer hunting repugnant--but venison eaters may find Escanaba's offbeat Midwest humor entertaining. --Bret Fetzer

I love Jeff Daniels, but this was the most God-awful movie I've ever seen, and I've seen a lot of them. We rented this movie one night thinking it was about hunting and maybe a little funny. We were dead wrong. This was the stupidest and most un-funny movie ever made, and...I'm sorry, I just can't do it justice. Sometimes when you watch a stupid movie, you can think about it later and laugh. Not with this one. I think about it and shudder. I'm a southern boy who likes the woods and likes to hunt and fish, so don't tell me I just didn't get it. There was nothing to get. What REALLY made me want to puke was when I got on here and read the reviews. PEOPLE ACTUALLY LIKED IT!!!! I'm sorry but the world is coming to a close folks, if anybody on God's green earth enjoyed that movie. Now I feel better since I got all that out of me. It's been building up and eating away at me for three weeks now. Ya'll have a nice day!

With a tawdry plot and a short list of suspects, Twisted gives armchair detectives an easy chance to figure out whodunit. Critics roasted this pulpy potboiler, in which Ashley Judd (attempting to repeat the thriller success she had with Double Jeopardy and High Crimes) plays a San Francisco homicide detective who is her own prime suspect in an ongoing serial murder case, in which all of the victims are men she recently slept with. These one-night stands, and a problem with alcoholic blackouts, make Judd's wine-drinking character the loose cannon on the case, and her partner (Andy Garcia) and police commissioner mentor (Samuel L. Jackson) have their own reasons for wanting the case to close. Apparently nobody bothered to point out numerous weaknesses in Sarah Thorp's B-movie screenplay, and with no apparent interest in the proceedings, director Philip Kaufman (The Right Stuff) allows Judd to look silly, Garcia to overact, and the whole movie to unfold in murky darkness and dimly lit rooms. Kaufman, Judd, and her costars are capable of better. --Jeff Shannon

Twisted brings to the screen the story of a young policewoman, recently promoted to inspector, who finds herself investigating the murders of her former lovers, making her...the prime suspect.
Ashley Judd, Andy Garcia, Samuel Jackson, and the rest of the cast carry out their performances very well.
The setting, the plot, the dialogues, and the music are all good.
In a nutshell, it's probably not a movie you would want to add to your collection, but it will provide for an evening's entertainment.

3 out of 5 stars unti-twist.......2007-01-27

Samuel L. Jackson and Andy Garcia are very talented and good actors, but even they can't save this film from failure. The main line is boring and film is very predictable - don't see nothing "twisted" in it.

The beginning of this film was rather boring but seemed to get a bit more interesting right near the end where this film earns an extra star!

Only watch if you're a fan of detective films otherwise I wouldn't bother!!

Samuel Jackson, Ashley Judd and Andy Garcia, the latter whom
the viewer can't really figure out, as a bad guy, good guy
throughout the movie, until the suspense is resolved towards
the end of the movie, doing a fine job.

Avoiding to spoil this thriller, clearly SJ does a fine acting
job, as does AJ, who seems significantly out of character in
this movie, playing an alcoholic, attitude-filled, gutsy police
detective, with a number of other flaws, such as ease with
which she moves from lover to lover. Within her own limits, Judd
demonstrates a very good, but not exceptional, acting performance.

For those, like myself, who enjoy movies who take you to another
time and space, for 1 hour and a half, this work is an acceptable
rental choice, if only to see the main actors playing characters
that are out of the ordinary, taking risks in terms of how far
they can remain credible playing difficult characters.

The downside to this movie,is perhaps the energy level, considering
the actors seem in most cases looking tired or worn out ...perhaps the
filming and on-location shots took a long time to prepare. This seems
to be the case for most of those in the movie, except for a few, such
as Camryn Manheim's character.

Perhaps to redeem herself from this shocking character, Judd is later
interviewed in the extra section of the DVD, on-set filming another
picture, Norma Jean, in a more charismatic manner.

2 out of 5 stars Do the Twisted.......2006-07-10

I think when many say they knew after 15 minutes who the killer was, they're actually saying they guessed who the killer was and just happened to be right.

Think about this for a moment: What was the motive? That was something I never figured out. The killer didn't have a motive. That's what threw me off. But I guess some would say a crazed killer doesn't need a motive. But come on! Even the deranged killer in 7even had a reason for killing. Even Norman Bates had a reason for killing.

It could be the reason was explained but I just missed it because the movie was so terrible. I don't know. I really don't want to have to watch the whole movie again to figure it out.

I know if you have a lot of high profile actors in secondary roles, one of them is the killer for sure; but you're thrown off by the fact that you have Andy Garcia, D.W. Moffett, and Sam L. Jackson. So all 3 are fair game.

5 out of 5 stars Very unusual. Very good........2007-06-23

I know almost nothing of Shakespeare and am not educated to appreciate the stage. I am just a mid-western schmuck that likes to watch a good movie (and will promptly tag a bad one appropriately).

I accidently stumbled onto a video of "Titus" and began watching it, not knowing what I was getting into. Whoa!! This thing is incredible. Maybe a few logical holes in the plot (as described by other reviewers), but since we've got 4th century Roman soldiers riding motorcycles and wearing combat boots . . . you gotta just kinda go with it.

Being Shakespeare, the dialogue got ahead of me now and then, but --- visually this film is absolutely awesome. The story is great (a bit brutal, but I was 10-4 with that). The acting is sublime: Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, newcomer Harry Lennix, et al. Musical score is right on. It obviously required genius, much courage, and plain hard work for director Julie Taymor to pull this off - but pull it off she did indeed.

Just a great, great movie experience and a definitive "change of pace" for most of us. Very cool. Check this out (adults only please).

4 out of 5 stars Truly Memorable Screen Adaptation of Shakespeare's First and Bloodiest Tragedy:,.......2007-03-24

Made by a very talented director, "Titus" is a stylish, visually stunning, energetic and truly memorable adaptation of the bloodiest parade of horrors which the first tragedy of the young Shakespeare is. More of the horror show than powerful and poetic later Bard's tragedies, "Titus Andronicus" offers betrayal, murders, tortures, rape, and cannibalism for which Julie Taymor's vision was just perfect in transferring this blood fest to the screen. If it is not enough, the movie has one of the greatest performances in Shakespeare's tragedies I've seen and it is Harry J. Lennix as Aaron. Never have I seen an actor who was able to combine both, noble Othello and the embodiment of evil, Iago in one character so convincingly with such power. Anthony Hopkins, Jessica Lange, Alan Cumming, and Colin Feore all give terrific performances.

5 out of 5 stars Anthony Hopkins is the new Lawrence Olivier.......2007-02-09

I'm not an intellectual movie watcher, I like to be entertained, so my taste runs the gamut of Devil's Rejects to Mel Gibson in Hamlet (he was very good buy the way) And I love Shakespeare but, big, BUT, the verbage should be modernized, However, but, big, BUT, Titus is the exception - all thanks to Anthony Hopkins in the Lead role. It's an old story, because of a man being obtuse, his whole family suffers. This is bloody, gorey, but beautifully presented and performed. Everyone that acted in this should have won awards. Enjoy!

4 out of 5 stars Don't bother asking for money, he's Titus Andronicus........2007-01-29

By conventional wisdom, Shakespeare's tale of murder, revenge, rape, cannibalism, treachery and mutilation (both on and off-stage) is the worst of the 38 or so plays attributed to him. Maybe it is and maybe it isn't. My pick for worst Shakespeare is Timon of Athens. Titus Andronicus is still my favorite of any play by any author (with Lanford Wilson's The Rimers of Eldritch running a close second.
Yes, the play isn't up to the literary standards of Hamlet, yes, it lacks the coherent picture of the characters' motivations we find in King Lear, yes, there are loose ends and unexplained actions. Aaron the Moor is evil because he is evil, not for any particular reason (like Richard III). He does bad things because he likes to do them, not because he wants some advantage (like Iachimo in Cymbeline). There's no indication of why the Goths would follow a renegade Roman in an attack against a city ruled by their own queen. Titus sends his grandson with a load of weapons to Chiron and Demetrius in Act IV, but there's nothing more said about it. Queen Tamora visits Titus disguised as the goddess of Revenge for no apparent reason other than to hand over her two knuckleheaded sons to the Andronicii to be killed and baked into pies. When Titus appears dressed as Chef Boy-ar-dee at the start of the big knife fight in Act V, his costume is dismissed in two lines.
Picky, picky, picky.
The violence and inexplicable behavior is so over the top that it can't be taken seriously any more than a 3 Stooges movie. When Moe hits Larry with a pipe wrench, we know that in just a couple of minutes, somebody is going dump a pot of hot coffee down Shemp's pants. When the kitchen blows up at the start of the film and Titus returns to Rome with his army (which looks like a bunch of computer-generated special effects but was really Croatian police academy cadets wearing blue mud), the scene is so weird that we have to keep watching just to see how it comes out. This is a movie that makes us put our hands over our eyes and peek through our fingers. Sort of like watching Jerry Springer.
Seeing Anthony Hopkins as Titus on his descent into madness (or maybe it was a descent into feigned madness) was a little disconcerting for me. He's very good, but personally, I think Ed O'Neill would have done a better job. Jessica Lange is hot as Tamora, and to the director's credit, is even more so without taking her shirt off.
The dialog is a little hard to follow, partly because the actors are reciting their blank verse lines as conversational speech, and partly because the music is a little heavy-handed. The surreal scenes go on for too long for my taste, and the bacchanal scene seems to be there just to provide some gratuitous nudity.
For a straightforward production of Titus Andronicus, I'd suggest the BBC Shakespeare series. For an evening of highbrow entertainment mutated into guilty pleasure, I'd go with this version.

5 out of 5 stars Well-done adaptation of raw, terrifying play.......2007-01-26

I began watching this DVD with dread, because I knew what was coming in the form of violence and brutality between the players in Titus Andronicus.

The movie adaptation is very good. It stylishly and artfully brings to the screen the evil, violence, vanity and sorrows of humanity illustrated in Shakespeare's play.

The acting is absolutely superb on all counts...I could not imagine it being better. The creative theatrics are interesting and soften the brutality of the play. The meshing of different eras helps to span the gap of time from the Roman empire to today and make this relevant to our time.

This is Shakespeare's raw tragedy, unrefined by the divine eloquence of Hamlet or Macbeth. Even Richard III cannot measure up to the corrupting evil nature of Aaron and the Goths. Still, the verses are profound and measured to stir the heart of listeners.

This is not for the squeamish and I would recommend reading the play prior to watching the movie so you know somewhat what to expect in action and plot.

Judy Holliday's final film, Bells Are Ringing, is, fittingly enough, a tailor-made vehicle for her brassy talent. She'd won a Tony for the Broadway version of the show, playing an overly sympathetic telephone receptionist who gets involved in her customers' lives. Betty Comden and Adolph Green adapted their stage musical, amusingly framing the film as a TV commercial for "Susanswerphone," the answering service Judy works for. Director Vincente Minnelli, in one of his less inspired outings, seems content to showcase Holliday's crack comic timing, which appears to have been transferred almost intact from the stage. Despite the somewhat muted tone, there are delightful bits: a typical Comden & Green showbiz party (with a number about name-dropping), Frank Gorshin's send-up of a Brando-inflected actor, and Dean Martin crooning while shouldering his way through a Manhattan crowd. "The Party's Over," that unforgettable end-of-the-evening lament, and "Just in Time" are the Jule Styne standards from the score. --Robert Horton

4 out of 5 stars Small Stage Musical Fans Only........2007-04-14

This is a wonderful movie for those of us who love musicals, Dean Martin, or Judy Holliday. It is not as cinematically filmed as it might have been. This is probably due to the fact that the play writers wrote the screen play. So the whole thing is cut like you are whatching the stage production. But the performance of Judy is incredibly charming, and who can resist the mellow tones of Dean's crooning.

Throw away your mobile phones. Smash your answering machines. Turn back your clock to 1960 when Suesanswerphone makes a pitch to improve all aspects of your life by preventing you from missing a phone call. An office full of Ella Peterson (Judy Holliday) voices filters incoming calls and forwards subscriber messages. Ella offers a unique personality for each client, making the establishment sound much grander than it is. Despite instructions to the contrary from her boss, cousin Sue (Jean Stapleton), but to the delight of subscribers, Ella goes beyond phone answering; she becomes a confidant and advisor.

A typical disaster on blind dates, Ella falls in love with the "disembodied voice" and circumstance of "Plaza-0 Double-4 Double-3" -- playwrite subscriber Jeffery Moss (Dean Martin) with whom she speaks in the voice of an elderly mother. "What a perfect relationship; I can't see him and he can't see me!"

Sue is swooned into sharing her office with shady Titanic Records owner J. Otto Prantz (Eddie Foy, Jr.) while Suesanswerphone is being investigated under suspicion of providing lonely-hearts-club service. Inspector Barnes (Dort Clark) warns Susanswerphone personnel not to have personal conversations or arrange meetings with male callers. Aware of these restrictions, Ella's concern for clients soon transcends the switchboard as she goes undercover in a variety of voices and costumes to pass along helpful information affecting the careers of such as characters beatnik Blake Barton (Frank Gorshin).

Musicals are the best! Dean Martin and Judy Holliday, what a perfect pair! Its just a feel good movie...love it!

4 out of 5 stars A rare delight.......2006-12-25

Bells Are Ringing is one of the rarest of all MGM musicals these days, but it's not at all bad despite a strong air of theatricality, most notably in the awkwardly staged finale. It's easy to see the strong influence this must have had on Amelie as Judy Holliday's Susanswerphone operator meddles in the lives of her clients, transforming them all for the better. The police investigation and bookie subplots don't really work that well (and the song-writing dentist is surely far more irritating than he was ever intended to be), but Holliday tones down the ditziness for something more believable and genuinely likeable and Frank Gorshin's hilariously brilliant impersonation of Marlon Brando is worth the price of the DVD alone. Dean Martin seems strangely sidelined here, especially with Holliday getting all the best songs, but it's still delightful entertainment if a tad overlong.

A good widescreen transfer and deleted musical numbers round out a very decent package.
