Somewhat of an excuse to throw together four hot young actors of the moment in a serious environment, Mobsters nonetheless is a decent treatment of the rise of four of the most infamous gangsters of the 20th century. Christian Slater and Patrick Dempsey play Charlie "Lucky" Luciano and Meyer Lansky, respectively, best friends since they were kids on the mean streets of New York. When Prohibition hits, these young ambitious hoods--along with Bugsy Siegel (Richard Grieco) and Frank Costello (Costas Mandylor) make their move to take over the rackets, even as it jeopardizes their friendship. Featuring cameos by Anthony Quinn, Michael Gambon, and F. Murray Abraham, Mobsters is a guilty pleasure if a not too serious one. --Robert Lane

3 out of 5 stars About as realistic as the man in the moon.......2007-01-24

Lucky,Lansky, and the rest of the THUGS portrayed here as if they were choirboys with machine-guns were murderous killers, drooling animals that should have been put down as rabid dogs are the moment thier disease manifested itself...Instead,in this film,we are subjected almost to a disney-like version of events, and ,as portrayed by this quartet of 1990s pretty-boys,as if crime,murder,prostitution,loan-sharking and all of the other nefarious activities these animals were into was just prankish play by a bunch of twenty-something lads..what rubbish...Not only that, but they take reality and trash it in favor of fiction...The events portrayed for the most part either didn't happen or happened in an entirely different way than as portrayed here..

5 out of 5 stars Mobsters with guts.......2006-07-18

Mobsters is a great movie that has been made regarding the pro-hibition era', relating to the mob connections of making money from selling illegal alchol. With a young cast and in my opinion some great acting, it's a thrilling watch based on real people and events. However glorified, it represents a great story of american mafia culture, back in the early 1920's. An enjoyable watch for those who don't mind all the killing and swearing.Recommended for those to be over the age of 18 because of the language through the movie.

3 out of 5 stars Chance it.......2006-04-05

Well its not a classic, but it doesn't deserve a 1 star either. I have the VHS version which in my opinion was better than DVD.
If you know the history of Lucky Luciano, you probably will find flaws with this movie. If you don't know the history of Lucky, there's a good chance you might like it.

This totally could have been a better film if it was put in better hands (Not to take anything away from the filmmakers). But if you have actors like Al Pacino, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci etc. attached to a film it sure helps, especially for that era (90's) not to mention the script.

1 out of 5 stars This Cast Should Be Whacked!!.......2005-11-22

I don't know about who wrote most of these earlier reviews, but my God, this is the absolute worst movie ever portraying these God-like men of Cosa Nostra. Christain Slater? Are you kidding me? And what is with this crap regarding the British speaking Maranzano? This is by far the most foul portrayal of La Cosa Nostra ever put on film. Do yourself a favor, if you haven't seen it, don't. And if you have, and like it, kill yourself, because I can't go through life knowing I'm competing for the same air as someone who is completely the poster child for people who shouldn't breed.

1 out of 5 stars Horrible............2005-07-06

Almost everything in this movie is a lie.... Although somethings in the movie happened almost all of it didn't happen the way the movie potrays.. This movie should be outlawed for its unrealistic potral of some of the most respected gangsters in American history...

4 out of 5 stars I liked it.......2007-07-03

This was a decent LDS film. Much better than some others out there. I would recommend it.

4 out of 5 stars Very funny.......2007-01-13

Although it's funnier when you understand Mormons and their lifestyles, but it is still funny no matter who watches it.

3 out of 5 stars Easy to watch and enjoy but by no means great.......2006-09-14

This movie is a somewhat enjoyable film geared towards members of the LDS faith. It has a few funny moments that and it is pretty well acted (for lower budget movies at least).

The movies premise is about a Mobster who cuts a deal with the FBI (to stay out of jail) and squeels on his mob boss in return for his squeeling he and his family are put into a witness protection program and are sent to live in Provo, Utah.

The movies premise is what it's like for a hard core mobster and his family to live in happy valley.

Like I said this movie does have a few good laughs and the acting is good (for a low budget film).

The problem with the film are as follows:

1 - Too preachy... sometimes the film tries too hard to preach about the LDS faith instead of tell a story

2 - On my DVD copy the sound didn't match the movement on people's lips. I would think that would be something you should check out before you start producing the film!

3 - Just an average good one time watch.... nothing you would want to see over and over again. This would be a good one time rental or library movie.

Decent just not great.

1 out of 5 stars Worst movie I've ever seen. Razzie, anyone?.......2006-09-05

If I could give this no stars, I would! The person from Kearns, UT who thinks this movie would be great for non-mormons, think again! I inadvertantly rented it at the video store, thinking it would be funny. In unbiased hands, it could have been. Skilled writers and actors would have been a plus, too. The acting was awful. The dialogue was stilted. The plot was unbelievable. Apparently the writers have never even watched a TV crime show, let alone done research. This movie played out like it was hastily thrown together by a couple of college kids pulling an all-nighter for film class. Worst of all, the whole thing came across as a thinly-veiled proselytizing tool. It may be A+ entertainment for mormons, but for regular folk like me this was nowhere near the quality one would expect.

5 out of 5 stars Mobsters and Mormons.......2006-05-11

Mobsters and Mormons is by far the best film Halestone Entertainment has ever produced. It is very funny and provides a wonderful message. I think they really hit a homerun with this film. It is a must see! Leaves you feeling very satisfied!

        Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Yes, the first reviewer was right.......2006-03-20

I bought this DVD in the $1 bin at a discount store. It was one of those decisions where in I knew it would probably be a mediocre movie (as are most $1 DVDs) but since it dealt with an interesting subject (Al Capone) and had an interesting actor in the lead (Rod Steiger) I thought it couldn't be that bad. Besides, I remember once, as a child, seeing the Rod Steiger Capone movie on television and being quite impressed with it. So, this movie was purchased with a small amount of nostalgia in mind. The problem is, this DVD has nothing to do with the Rod Steiger movie. It is instead, despite the packaging which leads the purchaser into believing they are buying the Steiger film, a documentary -- and not an especially good one.

It is less than an hour long, and features a few clips from various Capone films (including a fleeting glimpse of Steiger as Capone) but mostly centers around an annoying group of people in Chicago who have formed a modern day "We Love Capone" club (not kidding), who drop such gems as "I loved the social structure of the 1920s -- I would have loved to live in those times!" Yeah right buddy, there's nothing quite like segregation, gang wars, and corruption at all levels of government.

The documentary is semi-watchable, which would have been okay if the manufacturers of this DVD told you that you were buying a documentary. They lie and tell you that you are buying a Rod Steiger movie. They ought to be sued. This is outrageous. $1 or not, they shouldn't lie like that.

        1 out of 5 stars Total deception.......2005-11-22

When it comes to these cheapie DVDs, there are many instances of deceptive packaging. This one, however, is probably the worst example since it's an outright lie. Despite the claim on the front that states "Rod Steiger in AL CAPONE" and the listing running time of 105 minutes on the back, this is actually a 50-minute 1998 TV documentary that contains a fleeting clip of Steiger from the 1959 movie that I thought I was getting. So how is the documentary? I wouldn't know, because I can't be bothered to sit through it. But don't blame the filmmakers...blame Digiview. As the old saying goes, "When you're expecting ice cream, even the best fish tastes like poison." Or how about this one: Spend your money on something--ANYTHING--else.
