One of the most invigorating period adventures to hit the big screen in decades, this lavish, brilliantly directed film drew critical and audience raves when it was released in 1995. Inspired by historical fact and larger-than-life legend, the intelligently scripted story takes place in Scotland in 1713, when Highland farmer and clan leader Rob Roy MacGregor (Liam Neeson) is forced to borrow money from the duplicitous aristocrat Marquis of Montrose (John Hurt) to help his clan survive a harsh winter. When Montrose's vile henchman (Tim Roth) schemes to dishonor MacGregor and his wife (Jessica Lange) and take the money for himself, the rugged Highlander must take courageous action to preserve his integrity. What follows--along with some of the finest sword-fighting ever filmed--is a tale of courage and valor destined to become an enduring movie classic. Tim Roth received a well-deserved Oscar nomination (for Best Supporting Actor) for his indelible performance as the foppish but deadly villain Cunningham, and both Neeson and Lange bring an earthy, sensual quality to their passionate roles. Boasting a wealth of breathtaking scenery and high-intensity action, Rob Roy is further blessed by a splendid supporting cast (including Brian Cox and Eric Stoltz), and the lush soundtrack by Carter Burwell strikes a perfect balance of romanticism and vigorous dramatic energy. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars Worth watching again and again.......2007-04-13

Were there ever two finer men to grace the screen than Eric Stoltz and Liam Neeson? My eyes were constantly doing battle over which beauty to feast upon! Ah, but I digress!

I liked this film SO MUCH BETTER than Braveheart (which, frankly, bored me to tears!). Magnificent pagan pageantry, music and dancing frame the story of love, loyalty, honor, bravery, integrity, family, betrayal and trust so clear, so artfully created, and with such breathtaking beauty!

Not to be given short shrift is the story of women as property, chattel to be violated at will in battle, those who pay the price for the decisions of their men. Rape as a weapon of politics and property (honor violated) is a crushing testament to women's place in herstory.

"Honor is what no man can give you, and none can take away," says Rob Roy, "Woman is the heart of honor."

Rob Roy is nothing if not a man of honor. He will not swear false witness even against a man he has no respect for, he will not lie, cheat or steal and chooses only men of honor to surround him. When his best friend disappears with money borrowed as an investment, he refuses to believe he has been duped. There is nothing but honor around Rob Roy MacGregor.

This becomes crucial when Rob Roy speaks the truth of his rage to those in power. To accuse him of lying would be ludicrous, as everyone knows Rob Roy MacGregor doesn't lie. It is the best defense anyone has against being disbelieved.

A beautiful movie. Powerful themes. Worth watching again and again.

Dejas huella.

2 out of 5 stars Ridicuouls.......2006-11-22

The film was fencing about all right, until the last sword scene. To pretend that someone can halt an expert swordsman at bay by grabbing the blade of his sword with, of all things, his bare hand, so that the attacker can neither plunge it past his grip or pull it out, is just outrageously silly. That this simple point should have eluded most of the reviewers on this site is, to say the least, almost as amazing. It is so silly it just metastisises over any enjoyment one might have had of the whole. Incredible that any one seeing this Munchausen fib when it was shown at the theatre, wouldn't have risen for his seat whith a loud "Oh, please, come on!!"

5 out of 5 stars excellent movie.......2006-11-10

Just made an extended visit to Scotland last summer and it made the movie all the more interesting because I had actually trod on some of the soil where Rob Roy's adventures took place. Good entertainment for history buffs.

4 out of 5 stars A Highland Legend brilliantly portrayed!.......2006-09-30

Here we have one of those films that is as enjoyable in the tenth or so viewing as the first! The landscape of Scotland is generously displayed throughout. Liam Neeson plays the part of Rob Roy MacGregor, the legendary outlaw of the Highlands, as only he can. I doubt there was anyone else who could have played the part so naturally. In this story, Rob Roy finds himself forced to fight a guerrilla war against Marquis Montrose, a string of events resulting from the criminal acts of the Marquis' vile employee, Archibald Cunningham. Cunningham robbed the clan of a monetary loan, murdered Rob's best friend, and raped Rob's wife. However, Rob Roy, a true Highlander and man of honor, settles this issue by the sword, putting an end to Cunningham! The duel is one high point of the film, another memorable scene is a meeting between rival aristocrats Marquis Argyle and Marquis Montrose, in which Cunningham is introduced. I won't give away the dialogue!

Amazon.com essential video

Thelma & Louise is a feminist manifesto writ large on the big screen, a smart and funny gender reversal of the standard Hollywood buddy formula, a road movie extraordinaire, with characters who became instant cultural icons. No matter how you define it, Ridley Scott's 1991 box-office hit pinched a nerve and made the cover of national news magazines for tweaking gender politics like no movie before or since. Callie Khouri's screenplay overhauls the buddy formula with its story about two best friends (Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis) who embark on a liberating adventure that turns into an interstate police chase after a traumatic incident makes both women into fugitives; they are en route to a destiny they could never have imagined. The perfect casting of Sarandon and Davis makes Thelma & Louise a movie for the ages, and Brad Pitt became an overnight star after his appearance as the con-artist cowboy who gives Davis a memorable (but costly) night in a roadside motel. --Jeff Shannon

Description

Directed by action master Ridley Scott (Hannibal, Gladiator, Black Hawk Down) from an Oscar(r)-winning* screenplay by Callie Khouri, Thelma & Louise is an "exhilarating" (The Washington Post), full-throttle adventure hailed as one of the best road movies of all time! Susan Sarandon and Geena Davis star as accidental outlaws on a desperate flight across the Southwest after a tragic incident at a roadside bar. With a determined detective (Harvey Keitel) on their trail, a sweet-talking hitchhiker (Brad Pitt) in their path and a string of crimes in their wake, their journey alternates between hilarious, high-speed thrill ride and empowering personal odyssey even as the law closes in. *1991: Original Screenplay

The movie deserves five stars, but the reason I'm writing is because Amazon has this DVD mislabeled as the Special Edition when, in fact, it is actually the standard edition. I ordered the SE, but received the standard edition. I returned the item and told Amazon other reviewers had complained about receiving the wrong edition as well. I hope they correct the error.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC ROAD FILM.......2007-03-14

What everyone says about THELMA AND LOUISE is right on the money; it's one of my favorites. As for this Special Edition: Included are 1) the widescreen (2:35) edition of the film (best seen on a big-screen TV), 2) two commentary tracks, one with director Ridley Scott, the second with Geena Davis, Susan Sarandon and writer Callie Khouri, 3) deleted and extended scenes with footage markers, and 4) the original extended ending with commentary by Scott. The four making-of documentaries, multi-angle storyboards and musicvideo are not on this disc. Is there a two-disc version of this with the extra material?

5 out of 5 stars You get what you settle for..........2007-03-09

The very best line in "Thelma and Louise" is when Louise tells Thelma, "you get what you settle for." I have quoted that line time and time again to my children, friends, family, etc. There are many such literary gems contained within the writing of this wonderful movie.

Virginia Slims specifically marketed carcingenic tobacco products to millions of women by promising them "you've come a long way, baby," but we really haven't come as far as we should have. Thelma and Louise illustrates that very point with fine accuracy and almost too-close-to-reality dialogue.

I was so enamored of this movie that I purchased it and then watched it with each of my three daughters. After the movie, we had a discussion about why this was such an important film. The ending of "Thelma and Louise" is unspeakably sad but it too makes a powerful point about the futility and frustration of a woman's lot, even in our modern times.

The movie is very well written and provides painfully honest portrayals of marriage, men, women and their relationships.

5 out of 5 stars A Briliant Piece Of Cinema. One Of The Best Movies I've Ever Seen........2007-02-26

I watched "Thelma & Louise" knowing it was one of the most highly acclaimed films of the 1990s'. So my expectations were already quite high when I started it. By the time it was over, to say it had met my expectations was an understatement.

"Thelma & Louise" is one of the finest movies I've ever seen. In terms of acting, pacing, writing, cinematography and soundtrack, it is perfect in all aspects. The two main characters could've easily been cliched 2-D cutout rip-offs of Bonnie & Clyde or Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid, but the script injects them with enough originality and depth to set them apart. This is also thanks to the the fantastic performances of the two leads, Geena Davis and Susan Sarandon, who put on tow of the finest performances in all of cinema. They are backed by a solid supporting cast including Michael Madsen and the incomparable Harvey Keitel, as well as early breakthrough role by Brad Pitt.

The plot could've also been one dimensional and uninteresting, but writer Callie Khouri again made ot sparkle with inventive sequences, a solid mix of action, laughter and drama, and crackling dialogue.

And the direction by cinematic auteur Ridley Scott is audacious. The last sequence is one of the most beauotful images in cinema, and it brought a bit of a tear to my eye.

The special edition of this film is a must for all its fans, and the film itself should eb seen by all true cinema buffs.

4 out of 5 stars Don't sweat it. Women have secrets. Water is wet, the sky is blue, and women have secrets.......2007-01-10

I've been doing some thinking, and as I look at the careers of directors Ridley Scott and his brother Tony, I wonder if Greg Araki's "Mysterious Skin" is at all based on their lives.

(If you're unfamiliar with the plot of Araki's film, click over to the Amazon summary then meet me back here.)

Hi.

So, maybe similar circumstances happen with a lot of men, and Araki just picked up an archetype. But check out 1991: Ridley, director of "Alien" releases "Thelma and Louise," one of the greatest feminist films of all time. That same year, Tony Scott, director of "Top Gun," the most homoerotic movie of all time (according to Quentin Tarantino), releases the bloody football actioner "The Last Boy Scout," one of the most misogynistic films of the past decade.

So, I figure if these two work on a movie together again its storyline will fit somewhere between "Mysterious Skin" and "Alien vs Predator." It will take place in the desert, and everyone on screen will be dead by the end, with the possible exception of an ugly Electra. There's an interview with the two brothers in a recent issue of "Post," so maybe a collaboration is in the near future.

"Thelma and Louise" is a hallmark in cinema history, one of the greatest girl power movies ever made. Every man in it is a possessive, scheming creep (save Harvey Keitel as an understanding detective, and, to an extent, Michael Madsen as Louise's musician husband), and every creep gets his comeuppance. All of the scenes are beautifully and meticulously composed -- the filmmakers do an amazing job making shots that must've taken hours to prepare seem as natural and effortless as the good ol'girl banter between Sarandon and Davis. The famous ending, which would have been depressing or dishonest in the hands of someone less skilled, is genuinely uplifting without compromising any of the dignity and freedom T&L have discovered during their journey. The inclusion of B.B. King's "Better Not Look Down" before their final leap of faith definitely helps.

Ridley Scott's films seem to have more warmth, more humanity than T.S., which has me coming back to them more frequently. Tony's films are colder, flashier, more misanthropic. "The Last Boy Scout" exists in an emotional vacuum, excepting the dull rage running through every scene. The film's only noteworthy aspect is an early performance by Halle Berry as a dancing cowgirl (She is gunned down early in the film.)

Any doubt about T.S. being more obnoxious and condescending than his sibling was erased by the inclusion of Pat Boone's "Moody River" during the film's credits. Here's a sample:

"No longer can I live
With this hurt and this sin
I just couldn't tell you
That guy was just a friend."

How does T.S. keep getting away with the subversive homoerotic stuff in these macho action films? I would've never noticed if Tarantino first hadn't pointed out the "Wingman Anytime" analogy in "Top Gun." I don't know about you, but I just wanted to lift weights.

Anyway, I think Ridley Scott's films, particularly "Thelma and Louise" and "G.I. Jane" are subversive -- they're absurdist yet humanist. I believe Ridley wants the men who see these "feminist" films to make him look very silly. After seeing males portrayed as intolerant, monstrous caricatures, I bet he'd be pleased if audience members turned to their partners and said, "he doesn't know what he's talking about. Watch me treat you sweet."

On the other hand, these "empowering" films could be intended by some as a dulling narcotic, keeping kept women kept. Watching is chosen over the actual exhilaration of flying the coup. Near the end of the film, while T&L cruise through the Arizona desert, Thelma describes a feeling which I think everyone, male or female should experience at least once in their life (preferably without the death and destruction). It's a feeling of freedom and optimism I suspect Tony Scott still hasn't experienced, and I suspect he envies his brother's ability to convey it so effortlessly during this film. Further projecting onto Tony, I suspect this deficiency eats at him, drives him to make angry films like "Man on Fire," and feeds his "Deja Vu."

Here's the scene:

THELMA: You awake?
LOUISE: You could call it that. My eyes are open.
THELMA: Me too. I feel awake.
LOUISE: Good.
THELMA: Wide awake. I don't remember ever feelin' this awake. Everything looks different. You know what I mean. I know you know what I mean. Everything looks new. Do you feel like that? Like you've got something to look forward to?
LOUISE: We'll be drinkin' margaritas by the sea, Mamasita.

Lush production design and sparkling special effects make The Haunted Mansion pretty to look at. Terence Stamp (The Limey), as a malevolent ghost of a butler, provides a suitable air of menace as dematerializes to and fro. Marsha Thomason (Black Knight) is lovely as a real estate agent hired to sell a haunted mansion, but in truth the ghostly owner of the mansion believes she is the reincarnation of his lost love. Wallace Shawn (My Dinner with Andre) and Dina Waters (Six Feet Under) make a modestly amusing comic pair as a ghostly husband and wife who bustle about. Jennifer Tilly (Bound), as a green disembodied head in a crystal ball, glitters appropriately. The movie also features endless clichés, futile attempts at humor, and Eddie Murphy. If you're looking for a movie based on a Disneyland ride, try the very clever Pirates of the Caribbean instead. --Bret Fetzer

4 out of 5 stars Worth Seeing.......2007-04-02

After seeing Pirates of the Caribbean I was impressed that a ride could be made into a really good movie. And when I heard that the Haunted Mansion was being made into a movie I was excited. But then the trailers came out and I was even more excited.

It wasn't everything I had hoped for but its still worth a see and a rent/buy.

I like Eddie Murphy a lot and this was a movie where he could really shine as Jim Evers, the workaholic dad.

The special effects on this film are amazing, the Zombies really had me scared and I don't think that they could have looked much better. The work on madame Leota is amazing.

THE RIDE
The Haunted Mansion was one of those rides that as a kid I would always want to go on but somewhere in the line I would regret it and get out of the line terrified of what would happen if I would go through the front doors. But one day I did and it quickly became one of my favorite rides.
The filmakers were able to take a lot of the ride and put it on the screen

-Madame Leota has a major part, and the séance room is a cross between the ride scene and a gypsy tent

-The singing busts appear, singing a verse from Grim Grinning Ghosts

-The Portrait Gallery is an almost exact replica of the one in the ride, although the portraits are somewhat different from the ride

-The ghost duellists from the ballroom scene

-Jim has to battle suits of armor in the film. This is a reference to the moving suit of armor in the rides

-The Hitchhiking Ghosts make an appearance

This film isn't perfect but for people who don't want to fly to California to see the real Haunted Mansion this about as close as you can get.

5 out of 5 stars A fun, amusing, visual treat for the whole family!.......2006-12-17

I really enjoyed this movie, as did the rest of my family. What appealed to me the most was the set design and costumes. Being huge fans of Halloween, we decorate extensively for the holiday and this movie is a great source of inspiration. Most importantly, it's just good family fun and a full-length Halloween themed movie the entire family can watch in contrast to all the slasher films popular that time of year that even I can't handle. The script really does a good job of including as much of the features of the Disney attraction in the storyline: The fortune-teller in the crystal ball, the singing busts, etc.

It's a little scary for littlest ones, but my kids could handle it OK and they first saw it at ages 1, 2 and 5! They are now 4, 5 and 8, and it continues to be a Halloween-time favorite. I should say, though, they've also seen all the Harry Potter films and both Pirates of the Carribean and weren't afraid of them...so if you've seen these films then you can gauge from them how your child will handle Haunted Mansion. Every parent knows their kids the best and can determine for themselves when their kids should see it.

I think those reviewers who gave it a low rating were unfairly expecting too much from it. Not every movie has to be Academy-award winning material to be enjoyable. This movie sets out to entertain families and it does just that.

The main attraction to this dvd is the bonus features it contains. There is one feature which lets you become a home programmer in choosing the paths to "Disney's Virtual Ride Through The Haunted Mansion." Quite a nice feature, especially for halloween time. The other bonus features of special effects, costume designs, production values, bloopers, and music video are plentiful.
The movie itself is cotton candy for the horror comedy buff in us all, and not to be taken seriously. I must admit there are no actual scares in the movie at all, and even the final climax levels off the entire production scheme.
What can I say? In the end, instead of reading the book. . . go on the ride!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent family fare.......2006-09-15

I think some critics are missing the mark when judging what are always the most successful (commercially and otherwise) markets in cinema: Family and positively themed movies.

Unlike the "Pirates of the Carribean" the links to the Disney Park's ride of the same name are more obvious and more fun! They serve as cinematic "easter eggs" that will appeal to anyone who's been to the ride. Yes, the story line is obvious within about the first fifteen minutes of the movie; but following that predictable path is never dull. Eddie Murphy's bravado, fading and rising with, first the realization that something is very wrong at the Gracie Manor, and then with the understanding that his family is threatened takes the audience along with him on this fun-house ride.

Supporting roles are, for the most part, predictable with the exception of the chilling performance of Terence Stamp and the surprise ending that unlocks "the curse!"

For very young children, be advised that there are some really scary special effects, courtesy of the current King of Scream, Rick Baker, but nothing that will leave mental or emotional scars and even my seven-year-old giggled her way through most of the movie.

A great film for the whole family, though your more jaded teens will be bored.

The Dish, a good-natured and effortlessly funny Australian drama-comedy directed by Rob Sitch (The Castle), is filled with warm-hearted characters and has a factual hook that's irresistibly inspiring. This cumulative goodwill springs forth from the rural town of Parkes in New South Wales, where a 1,000-ton radio observatory dish is recruited to relay telemetry, voice, and television signals from the historic Apollo 11 moon landing in July 1969. To make sure the dish delivers Neil Armstrong's "giant leap for mankind" to 600 million eager viewers, site director Cliff Buxton (Sam Neill, at his gentle best) relies on a three-man crew consisting of an American NASA watchdog (Patrick Warburton, resembling a bearish Clark Kent), a sarcastic engineer (Kevin Harrington), and a lovestruck math whiz (Tom Long) who's pining for the sister of the dish's rather dimly overzealous security guard (Taylor Kane).

Numerous other supporting characters add color to the proceedings, and crises arise (albeit briefly) when power outage, signal loss, and windstorms threaten to spoil Parkes's proudest hour. It all rates a bit high on the cuteness meter, but The Dish is so smoothly amusing that you won't object to its eagerness to please. By focusing on the Aussie locals, the film reminds us that the moon landing was an occasion of global unity, and pride in all humanity is reflected in the wondrous smiles of Cliff, his crew, and the citizens of Parkes. That they played such a small but pivotal role in this historical milestone is just one of many joys to be discovered in this delightful little movie. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars The Dish.......2007-04-10

This is one of those movies I watch over and over again and with my family. I am an amateur astronomer so it interest me to watch how we came to first land on the Moon and perhaps from an inside view of how things were done. All the actors do a great job of telling this story.

5 out of 5 stars Fun and great history, too.......2007-03-25

Saw this in the theater and enjoyed it again just as much on DVD. It's 1969 and the people of Honeysuckle Creek, Australia are very excited because their satellite dish will be used to transmit television images of the first moonwalk to the world. There are lots of wonderful characters, from the lovelorn engineer too shy to ask out the pretty local girl, the redfaced mayor with the space-obsessed son, the NASA by-the-book American who's been sent to oversee the Australians, and the calm bespectacled leader of the Dish's crew. When disaster strikes in the form of a power outage, the town's chance for fame and glory appears about to fade away. Can the intrepid engineers save the day? There's actual footage from the launch and moonwalks which are still riveting almost 40 years later.

4 out of 5 stars "The Dish" leaves us feeling good.......2007-03-05

I orginally discovered "The Dish" when a neighbor brought this unknown movie over to watch with us one evening. I was interested in the subject matter having taught Astronomy at the college level and also spent considerable time in Australia. So, we put it in the DVD player, and an amazing thing happened: We really were taken back to 1969, and our surroundings, and the people we were with, were as real as life.

This movie title provides no evidence just how much you will take away from it. As an American, it gave me a taste of the pride and sense of accomplishment we all felt as Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon. (Before "America Bashing" became popular, mostly among the members of our own media.) As a human being, it brought back that amazing day in July 1969 when we all broke the bonds of gravity and watched one of us walk on another planet (well, moon, actually...) for the first time in history.

The movie brings out all the small events, triumphs, and errors, that combine to make any great achievement possible. It tells the stories of the 'regular' people of Parkes, a small town in New South Wales, who, by doing their jobs, helped bring the images of the first steps on the moon to eyes all over the world.

It examined the most intriguing questions that needed be answered before we took the steps away from our Earthly home; like: "How do they go wizzz up there?" (Evidently remains unknown to this day!) Or, " Without the co-ordinates, how do we find the Moon?" (Answer; Look out the window!) And, "Is this mission really funded by the CIA?" (Answer: Not completely.)

From the NASA project manager who is terrified that he'll screw up his big opportunity, and the engineer who forgot to prime the fuel pump on the back-up generator, to the love struck mathematician who tries to ask the love of his life for a date and the mayor's 'radical' daughter who is convined that everything is a CIA/imperialist plot, the cast brings the characters to life and leaves the viewer with a real feeling of having been there sharing it all with them.

The sound track makes us feel like it really is 1969. The choice of music is perfect. You will really laugh, and there may be a few tears of pride and happiness as you watch the very believable cast bring 1969 small town Australia to life. One of the best movies I have ever seen. You'll watch it over and over.

4 out of 5 stars A sweet-natured movie, well acted and amusing.......2007-01-14

Terms such as "charming," "sweet-natured," "gentle" and "good-spirited" may mean the kiss of death for some movies. It's also possible that the movie in question just might be worth watching because it is well-made, deals with a genuinely inspiring topic and features some classy actors. For me, The Dish falls in that category. The dish is a 1,000-ton radio telescope plunked down in a sheep pasture close to the New South Wales town of Parkes. It's purpose, as part of a NASA network, is to help track Apollo 11's voyage to the moon and to relay television pictures of Neil Armstrong becoming the first man to set foot there. Sam Neill as Cliff Buxton heads the team running the radio telescope. There's also Al Burnett (Patrick Warburton) as a NASA representative, Glenn Latham (Tom Lang) as a young and excruciatingly shy mathematician and computer whiz, and Mitch Mitchell (Kevin Harrington), who's job it is to see that all the mechanical functions work without a hitch.

We know Armstrong made it and we know television showed us his first steps. For those of us who were around, we also remember how amazing it all was. What we learn in this gentle comedy are the crises that happened. One morning, for instance, Cliff says, "Glenn, come here." "What?" Al Burnett looks at Glenn. "Every coordinate in this book has been changed," he says. "Yeah... I changed them," Glenn says. "Why?" "Because they were wrong." "Why were they wrong," Al asks. "Dunno," Glenn says. Latham steps in. "What about them were wrong," he asks Glenn. "Oh! Well," Glenn says, "the figures NASA gave us were for the northern hemisphere... and we're in the southern hemisphere? I can change them back but then you'd be pointing in the wrong dir..." "Glenn, it might be a good idea for you to tell us these things," Cliff says. "Oh, sure, I just didn't want to worry you... Cuppa tea, Al?"

There's the pride and enthusiasm that overtakes everyone living in Parkes, the visit from the U.S. ambassador and the Australian prime Minister that sends everyone into a tizzy, the near disaster that occurs when contact is lost with Apollo 11 and how an amusing appearance of imperturbability is maintained in public when everything from failed back-up generators, wiped-out computers and a gale promises one of the biggest let-downs -- no television broadcast -- for the entire world. For me, one of the reasons this movie works so well is because Parkes is an idealized small town where everyone knows each other, there are absolutely no secrets, and where the people have personalities which are calculated to be amusing but which aren't manipulated into becoming caricatures. Bob McIntyre (Roy Billing), the mayor of Parkes, is a fireplug of a guy who resembles Bob Hoskins. The technical aspects of what's happening may go over his head, but he's willing to give the benefit of the doubt to almost anyone. His relationship with his wife, May (Genevieve Mooy), is friendly, loving and pleasant to observe. We learn a little, and occasionally a lot, about the people of Parkes and we wind up liking them. This is comedy, but it's gentle stuff. When we smile at a person's puzzlement, dialogue or reaction it's because we appreciate the situation, not that we're enjoying our own superiority.

Sam Neil, smoking a pipe and wearing a sweater, provides the steady center of the movie. He does a fine job. The Dish is more or less based on a true story and we're told at the end that the radio telescope is still part of the NASA tracking network. The DVD transfer is first-rate. There are no significant extras.

5 out of 5 stars "The pictures....they came from US!".......2007-01-08

I love this film because it showed "our" part in the first moon landing and because I visited The Dish, in Parkes, some years ago. The dish is 10,000 times more powerful than it was in 1969 and physically unchanged except for that big receiving box you see Mitch (Kevin Harrington)climbing down, that added by the Americans for the Voyager Neptune transmissions.

"The Dish" is an amiable and "folksy" account of the part a small town in N.S.W. played in the first moon landing. It has touches of romance as the awkward Glenn Latham (Tom Long) asks the local beauty, Janine (Eliza Szonert) on a first date; comedy when the Dish looses track of Apollo 11 and they fake a transmission for U.S. Ambassador Howard (John McMartin); drama in the way "we stuck to it" and caught Armstrong stepping onto the Moon, despite the winds that could have blown the 1000 tons of antenna down and killed the crew.
The use of actual locations helped to make the film more credible and it was fun to see the Australian idiom translated for the bemused American, Al (Patrick Warburton).
"You treat us like a pack of galahs!" ~ "That's a kind of parrot" Slang: pack of galahs... fool, idiot.

The Dish a nice feel good family film, by no means great cinema, but a joyous postcard of history. And for some people, The Dish may put you back in touch with that sense of childhood wonder, you though you may have lost and the time when any adventure was possible.

Let's hope that the dish or its successor is there in 2018 for the first words from the return to the moon.

"Well, Neil...it's still here!"

This is a great movie to add to your collection. Mysterious Island made me feel sad, but I got over it. I liked the stupid things Ozzy and Strut did such as leaping off a cliff because they see a sharptooth's shadow, or even trying to steal an egg and accidentally biting into a rock.

I really emjoy this movie, I hope you do to.

4 out of 5 stars Great videos for all ages.......2007-05-08

The land before time series is great collection of movies that do a good job teaching important principles to all viewers. I found it interesting to watch how the little gang of dinosaurs "evolved" throughout the series. I also found it interesting to see how the animation itself evolved through the movies. I, like a few others, did find the addition of songs to the series from the second movie on to be a bit of a detriment to the series...however some of the song are good and can be catchy.

Anyway I have new info on a future release of Lbt its called: LBT 13 the return of chomper

4 out of 5 stars Great Movies.......2006-06-22

I realy loved these movies when I was younger. The first 5 are the best, I particulary enjoyed #4 and #5. But I think on th last few they have begun to lose their touch. I think the newest ones, like a "The Journey To Big Water", which features a song about imaginary friends, are more marketed for younger preschool children. This may be because I am older. I still love these movies that I grew up with.

1 out of 5 stars dont bother.......2005-12-06

Don't bother buying the whole volume set. Save money and only buy the first one. I agree totally with the other person who said this. The many other sequals are not as good as the first one. The first will always be my favorite and I love to watch it every couple of years to relive my childhood. Stick with the classic.

2 out of 5 stars Save your money and just buy the first........2005-08-01

Ah, The Land Before Time. One of the classic animations from when I was young. A wonderful story, with relatively good animation. I would highly recommend the original, and I'm sure that young children will love them.

But if you grew up when the first was released, you will see how ridiculous the series has become. Nine movies? The animation and stories seem to lag after every new sequel. The company that produces these is making them more for the money the franchise will bring in, instead of worrying about quality entertainment.

So I shall say, your kids may like the movies, but please, save your money and just buy the first and best movie of this series. If you kids desperatley need a good movie, try some of the Disney Classics, and don't bother with their sequels either. Don't support this ridiculous need for sequles, pre-quels and the like. It says that we would rather watch a mindless continuation of a classic story instead of a new and fresh idea that would *GASP!* Take dedication and creative vision to produce. We deserve better than that.

Gary Oldman, hot off his success in Sid and Nancy and Prick Up Your Ears, went Hollywood with this stenciled thriller, which came minus many thrills. The most impressive thing about it is his American accent. Otherwise, there's not much to recommend this Martin Campbell film. Oldman plays a hotshot defense attorney in Boston who, in a highly publicized case, gets rich playboy Kevin Bacon acquitted of murder--only to realize afterward that Bacon is not just guilty, but a serial killer who has gone on a spree again. So the lawyer takes the law into his own hands and finds himself overmatched in a battle of wits with the murderer. But then, this whole movie is overmatched in the wits department. --Marshall Fine

5 out of 5 stars Interesting analysis of morality.......2007-06-12

Interesting analysis of morality. Kevin Bacon plays a man whose sense of right is so out of touch with society that he may be a criminal. If you look past some of the classic Joe Don Baker dialogue ("Son, in all my years of police work, I've learned one thing: a crazy killer is crazy. And he will kill you.") you might just see an interesting portrait of a people who are willing to pay the consequences of their actions in order to do what they consider the right thing.

IF I remember correctly, this film was the topic of about 4 of my papers in college.

1 out of 5 stars Unintentional comedy!.......2006-06-27

This movie review is based on the Laser Disc, not the DVD. Seeing how this is not available on DVD, and not even being sold by outside sellers tells me that they may never have released it on this format. That, based on my memory of the quality of the Laser Disc release, does not surprise me in the least.

I had this movie on Laser Disc purchased for me by an ex-girlfriend, and definitely shows to me her lack of fortitude in choosing movies based on their quality. But, who am I to look a gift horse in the mouth.

I thought this was the most asinine movie. It was schlock full of loose strings, un-explaineable (though the tried) plot twists, and complete lack of plot logic. I thought a defense lawyer was supposed to defend you? Right? And I thought that all lawyers sign an ethics agreement to support and treat the client with all due respect. Maybe I'm not using the right terms, but what the hell!

Gary Oldman is a defense lawyer, and defends and gets a defendant off (Kevin Bacon) and supposedly, figures out Kevin is actually guilty of the former and a new crime, and suddenly becomes the defender of justice. Maybe somebody better tell the screenplay writer, that defense lawyers defend the "guilty" and do not work for the State Prosecuter's Office, or even the Public Defender's office. If he accepts the case, and then acts as the Detective, he is immediately guilty of injustice to his client, and the viewer will immediately turn off.

However, for some reasons, I didn't turn it off. I was immediately fascinated by the absurdity of this plot. And the overacting. And the stupidity! Gary Oldman and the Lady Detective deserve the Overacting Raspberry award of the year! Their on screen interactions were ludicrous and hilarious at the same time!

Another reviewer mentioned that Gary Oldman has an American accent. I actually didn't know he was British when I first saw this movie, and fascinated with how well he could imitate a British accent in his other movies. Of course, I have since learned his country of origin, and am equally impressed with his American and British accents in many of his films. He truly is a glorious actor.

Even in this movie, he steals most of his scenes, and deserves credit for his wonderful acting. But the movie is awful, and not even he can save it!

If you want to laugh, try to find this on VHS, or even Laser Disc (I still have my copy) but DVD format seems to be up in the air at this time. But under no circumstances pay more than $1.25 for this tripe!

MC White said: Not even worth a rental. See if you can find it for free online.

2 out of 5 stars Makers had no thought of making the film this could've been?.......2002-05-26

WARNING: SPOILERS, although this movie is its own worst spoiler.
The makers of this film had a good thing going, if only they'd suspected it and dared be a bit ambiguous as to whether their motives were politically correct or not. But guess they were committed all along to making a different film than the good one this could've been. Kevin Bacon plays Martin Thiel, a disturbed young man who was traumatized by learning that his mother wanted to abort him. Considering that, even the staunchest pro-choice advocates might ought to cut him some slack if he's not firmly in their camp. As the movie goes on we see perhaps even more compelling reasons why he's traumatized. Quite apart form her intentions in his prenatal days, we see that his mother is one who would make Susan Smith seem warm and caring by comparison. The movie (unwittingly, I suppose) creates considerable sympathy for Martin. But never mind all that. This movie is firmly committed to by-the-books political correctness. Because Martin is an abortion opponent and his mother is a doctor who performs abortions, don't imagine any room for suspense here as to who must be the villain and who must be his last victim. When some of his mother's former patients show up murdered and mutilated, Martin becomes the chief suspect. At one point (somewhere around halfway through) he seems to virtually confess to his lawyer (played by Gary Oldman) that he's the killer, hinting that he carries out a sort of divine justice against those who got abortions. Unquestionably here's a disturbed guy. But wouldn't a smart suspenseful plot development from that point be the following? Martin is no killer, but in his traumatized state almost admires whoever is and almost wants to take credit for those deeds and/or protect the real killer. Meanwhile his ice queen mother is a most conflicted pshcyopath, not at all totally secure in her belief in the morality of abortion but keeps providing them to have access to knowledge of who gets them, so she can exact her "vengeance" on them. But that would mean the movie would have to settle for being ambivalent on the subject of abortion. Its makers lacked the imagination and/or courage (probably both) to make that intriguing thriller. Instead what they do make from the point of Martin's virtual confession is as morose and boring as it is predictable.

2 out of 5 stars Good Performances, Dumb Plot.......2001-02-09

A pompous and predictable thriller that covers all-too-familiar territory, this one is about a lawyer who helps set his client free of murder charges only to find out he was guilty of that crime and of another killing. Those who prefer smart thrillers will be disappointed, but with its occassional moments of intriguing suspense and credible performances by Oldman and Bacon, it's hard to look away.

4 out of 5 stars A Principal Achivement In The Suspense-Thriller Genre.......2000-06-23

This is a thriiler worthy of high ranking Gary oldman plays the defense attorney who gets psycho Kevin Bacon aquitted of murder charges and then soon realizes the big mistake he made when his cilent starts taunting him by killing again and again. Noteworthy performaces all around and backed up by a memorable film score. If you want to see Kevin Bacon in a different role that expands his acting capabilties see this film, as for Gary Oldman this is one of his most acomplished works. A far cry from his usual bad guy over the edge type characters. I love this film!

This direct-to-video sequel (the second) to The Land Before Time suffers from less ambitious animation, but the story is superior to the last film. This time, a meteorite has cut off the water supply to the Great Valley, causing inhabitants to bicker and bully among themselves. By contrast, Littlefoot and his friends are getting along just fine, and they leave the valley to go in search of a new water source. 5 out of 5 stars Fantastic movie and series for children of any age!!.......2006-09-13

The entire LBT series, and this movie in particular, deals with issues that all kids, parents and families are faced with on a daily basis (love, friendship, trust, just to name a few). The family issues include single parenting and adoption (both touch my family) and it is a great way for my son to learn that each family is different. In this particular movie, Littlefoot and his friends are dealing with "bullies" and it is a perfect chance for parents and children to discuss how to deal with other children who may not be as nice as they are. My son, who is almost 5, names all dinosaurs after the LBT characters, we have the CD playing in the car most of the time and he watches both of the Singa-a-Long tapes constantly. I know he learns something new each time he watches one of the movies because of the discussions we have. I cannot praise this series enough!!

2 out of 5 stars The Time of Great Confusion.......2006-01-23

I couldn't understand if they were speaking language or else not. Sometimes I lay awake at night and wonder if this is how those graceful creatures spoke to each other. Although this movie was a bit too artsy for me, I still thought it was pretty good even though I couldn't understand what they were saying. Overall, this is my third favorite Land Before Time movie, only the seventh and the ninth are much better. Littlefoot still rules the Jurassic Period.

1 out of 5 stars Kids will enjoy it, but might get the wrong message..........2005-10-10

I did not like this movie at all, and I have taken it out of our collection and put it in the trash. The only reason that I didn't like this movie is because of the bullies in it that pester Little Foot and his friends. It is negative, and have found my two year old son starting to act out some of the behaviours that the bullies do in this movie.
Get it if you wish, but I don't recommend it.

Young brontosaurus Littlefoot and his pals venture out of the Great Valley into the Mysterious Beyond and encounter a T-rex and a pair of omnivores who just want to be friendly. (Gulp.) The gang learns how hard it is to be a kid on one's own in a scary place--what with landslides and ferocious "sharptooths." 3 out of 5 stars Not for kids under 6.......2006-08-23

My 6 and 7 year old daughters really liked the movie. But my four year old is waking up every night now having nightmares about T-Rex hunting her. Those T-Rex were too realistic. If the movie had been rated PG my rating would have been higher. So please be careful with your little ones. Kids under 6 can not distinguish between fiction and reality!!!

    2 out of 5 stars More like a conversation....................2005-10-25

I am 13 and I own 1-8 of the series. As you have seen in my other reviews, I kept saying that the 7th one was the best. That's because it is true! Sure, the first one was nice, but very intense and Cera was really stupid in the first one. I liked the song in the credits. I am glad universal had one of Dianna Ross's songs in the first one. I used to love Chomper! I still think he's adorable, but I don't enjoy him as much.

So, about the movie, I think this is good, but they make some of the charcters, (like Ozzie and Strut) very stupid. I think the only charcter out this whole series that had a good role, was Petrie. I wish he had better grammer though, he would be a lot cuter. I think once they made the 8th one, things started getting out of hand. I really they still plan to keep The Land Before Time Spirit alive, if not, then maybe they should let new people in with new visons, new ideas, and so on...........

I hope so much Pterano and Allie come back in the future realses. (Next to Petrie, Pterano rocked! Go Micheal York!) Okay I am done now. I would suggust if you gave a family over 8 do not buy this.

As the intro says, you are defianately going to need these during the off-key songs. The charactors seem to have evolved in stupidity and look dumber than ever. This definately gives a bad influence to younglings.

This is without a doubt one of my favorites out of the series.
