Our favorite American hero has returned in this rerelease of the now cult-classic G.I. Joe movie from 1987. Once again G.I. Joe must protect the world from total obliteration. Cobra, the deadliest of foes and leader of an underground race of snake people, is proving to be a great threat to humankind. After spending many generations underground, he plans to take over the world again (with the help of his evil foes Pythona and Serpentor) by releasing deadly spores into the atmosphere. These spores can transform all life into the weakest of creatures, which means humans could potentially devolve into amoebas. However, in order to accomplish this, Cobra must acquire the Broadcast Energy Transmitter. (The BET activates the spores.) Luckily G.I. Joe is there to stop Cobra and his evil army. There are terrific fight scenes in which nobody gets hurt (like in all great A-Team episodes) and the cartoon style is true to the G.I. Joe character. All your favorite G.I. Joe characters are here, including Falcon, Bazooka, Alpine, Duke, Snowjob, and Roadblock. Starring voices also help lend a hand: Don Johnson, Burgess Meredith, and Sergeant Slaughter. Forever and always G.I. Joe will be "fighting for freedom wherever there's trouble, over land and sea and air!" --Samantha Allen Storey
Description
A 40,000-year-old race of snake people resurface, and with help of Serpentor, Desto, Baroness and Dr. Mindbender, plan to eliminate all of mankind and rebuild Cobrala. Once rulers of Earth, the Snake people were driven underground by ice-age temperatures. While in exile, they developed a plant whose spores turn ordinary men into mindless, weak animals. The key to their plan is G.I. Joe's secret project--the Broadcast Energy Emitter. Only this device generates enough heat so that the spores can mature. Humankind's very existance depends on G.I. Joe, but are they strong enough, smart enough, cunning enough to fight a warrior race with 40,000 years of experience?

Was never and still not a fan of G.I. Joe.......2007-06-15
Overall, I hate G.I.Joe. I dont own the seasons. I hate anything that contains a whole lot of shooting and nobody is ever shot. And if they were shot, it was never, ever, fatally. If there's ammo flying. Animated or otherwise, I want to see people shot dead! GI Joe never gave me that. And there was no blood. With that being said. I pretty much thought this movie was decent. Because it had a little blood. It continued with Cobra fighting for world domination. And with the Joes trying to stop them.
I dont know about others, but I liked the dark setting of this one. And that opening was to die for. This movie delivers more with the action. There is fisticuffs all over this movie. The story in my opinion is a mixed bag. They do a good job in my opinion with the origin of Cobra the organization and Cobra Commander himself. The plot leading up to the end was ok at best. This is what dragged the movie down alot for me. The new characters on both sides just weren't very likable. Tell you how popular they were. Except for Falcon, none of them made an appearance in the episodes after the movie. 'Nuff said.
Well GI JOE the Movie should appeal to most fans. I thought it was alright even though I'm not a fan of GI Joe. This is the only thing of GI Joe in my collection. If you love the series then pick this up. But to those who are new to this should probably rent it. If you didn't follow the seasons its possible you won't enjoy this the same way a fan would because you don't know the characters. Still if your looking for a movie full of fistfights, you might not be disappointed with this.
A fun time for Joe Fans.......2006-11-06
This movie had its problems, but looking at it now I see a lot of fun. I remember as a kid I didn't like some of the things that happened in the movie. Now I see it as a good mix of G.I. Joe and science fiction two things I have always loved. I never thought of G.I. Joe as science fiction as a kid, but looking back I wonder how I missed all the the super science G.I. Joe had in it. The move's big flaw is that the characters from the show were not used that much in it. They focused on new characters who we didn't get enough time to really care about like we did the old favorites. Still, it is a movie all Joe fans should see. I have shown it to some who have never seen an episode of G.I. Joe and they loved it. It got them to look at the other episodes. Check it out... and... Yo Joe!
Got to get tough Yo Joe!.......2005-09-06
In the 80s cartoon graduation went something like this... He-Man, Transformers, GI Joe, and Ninja Turtles. Yes there were other shows you may have seen, even other shows you may have enjoyed more, but there is no denying that if you were a boy between 5 - 11 these were the shows you mainly remember watching.
G.I. Joe is the series for the patriotic gung-ho attitude of freedom over communism that the 80s really flaunted with stuff like Rocky 4 and the Coca-Cola vs. Pepsi "coke wars". G.I. Joe is also one of the corniest yet lovable animated shows of that time. The series was a constant hit or miss. You either had brilliant shows with plausible plots (like Cobra ruining the oil supply) or farfetched fantasy (The Egyptian gods episode).
So what was G.I. Joe the movie? Well you take the brilliance and mix it with the bizzare and you get Cobra-la. If you take it as is the movie is really action packed and fun, but unfortunately it's supposed to be an awesome American military force that fights terrorism. Instead it looks like "Alien vs Predator" meets "Starship Troopers".
The public service annoucements are the one saving grace. They are truly entertaining and more memorable than the movie.
Too bad America can't do nothing this creative anymore. Japan could teach this young generation something!.......2005-08-08
This movie change the way we look at cartoon's forever. Kids were blown away by the animation the way the drawing's were so mature looking and not cartoony. Back then U.S.A. could make good orginal cartoons, drawing them almost like it's an anime. The Joe's deal with an 40,000 year old race of snake which looks half snake half human. Shargent Slutter the wrestler had his cartoon character on this movie. The action is way cooler in this movie then the series.
Inspired casting and brilliant writing.......2005-03-24
Brilliant to get Burgess Meredith, who played the tragically martyred journalist Ernie Pyle in the original movie of the STORY OF G.I. JOE, to take the role of Globulus in this sequel made some 40 years later! Okay, it's not strictly a sequel, but talk about going over from the forces of light over to the dark side! No one does it better than Burgess Meredith, as he proved playing the Penguin in the 1960s TV series of BATMAN, and now here in the middle of this stylish movie cartoon.
Some complain that the emotional tone of the movie is too different from the TV series we all grew up watching. On the other hand some of the exact same writers were employed on both, including Ron Friedman, who wrote "Revenge of the Cobra." I saw his movie (that he wrote) BROTHER BEAR and I'm looking forward to his next animated special, Disney's new one CHICKEN LITTLE.
Friedman also wrote the TRANSFORMERS MOVIE. Where the hell is his OSCAR? Better send in Tunnel Rat and Dial Tone to retrieve it, boys!

As they march into yet another devastated Italian town, one of the soldiers of Company C neatly sums up the average infantryman's experience of World War II: "When this war's over, I'm gonna buy me a map and find out where I've been." Released less than three months after the German surrender, The Story of G.I. Joe is a gritty portrayal of the reality of war: defeat as well as victory, blood and mud as well as glory.
William Wellman's film was based on the newspaper columns of war correspondent Ernie Pyle (played by Burgess Meredith), and through him we get to know a small group of ordinary infantrymen as he follows them from North Africa into Italy. They're led by Captain Bill Walker (Robert Mitchum), who claims he earned his rank by living longer than the other lieutenants, and Sergeant Warnicki (Freddie Steele), a tough, gruff career soldier who carries a carefully wrapped recording of his son's voice across Italy in search of a gramophone. The soldiers--many played by real veterans of the Italian campaign--mature as we get to know them, becoming battle-hardened but increasingly exhausted.
Meredith is effective as Pyle, who quickly becomes something of a company mascot. He earns the respect of the GIs by sticking around when the shells start to fly, and he becomes an even bigger hit when he brings them all turkey and cigars at Christmas. But if this quintessential ensemble piece belongs to anyone, it's Mitchum as the battle-weary C.O. Fiercely loyal to his men, he feels every death as a personal loss but refuses to flinch from his duty. Mitchum brings an extraordinary depth of emotion to his performance, and he received a well-deserved Oscar nomination.
Much of the film's strength lies in the contrast between the human side of war--bored men trying to stay sane in cramped dugouts--and the inhuman randomness of its destruction. After every battle, ambush, or artillery attack there's a terrible moment when we wait to see who is dead--"We lost three," says Sergeant Warnicki as a few men stagger in from a patrol. The nerve-shatteringly realistic battle sequences bring to mind Saving Private Ryan, and The Story of G.I. Joe is a strong competitor with Spielberg's acclaimed film for the title of greatest-ever war movie.
Several of the soldiers who appear in the film, along with Ernie Pyle himself, died in action before The Story of G.I. Joe was released. Fifty-five years later it still stands as a memorial to them and to all of the ordinary men and women who died in World War II. --Simon Leake
Description
The mightiest action drama ever filmed! Robert Mitchum (Cape Fear) and Burgess Meredith (Of Mice and Men) star in this gripping World War II drama based on the newspaper columns of Pulitizer Prize-winning war correspondent Ernie Pyle. Directed by legendary filmmaker William Wellman, "The Story of G.I. Joe" depicts Ernie Pyle's (Meredith) experiences with the men of Company C of the 18th Infantry and their role in the invasion of Italy. Pyle joins Captain Bill Walker (Mitchum) and his men in the desert of North Africa and follows these gallant soldiers as they fight their way from the beaches of Sicily to the hills of southern Italy. Few films have so honestly portrayed the harrowing existence of the infantry soldier in World War II--an unsentimental, often brutal, but always human story of the mud, blood and death that surround the infantryman in combat. Mitchum's performance made him a star and earned him an Oscar nomination as Best Supporting Actor. Critics and film historians agree--this is simply one of the best films ever made about World War II.

The Story of G.I. Joe.......2007-06-25
Wellman's cinematic homage to the real-life Pyle, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist, has been called one of the greatest war films of all time, and it certainly earns that distinction. The combat scenes are intense and realistic, but the film also shows the humdrum day-to-day duties and concerns of enlisted men with an almost documentary-like fidelity. Meredith lovingly evokes Pyle's humanistic and devoted attitude toward the ordinary soldiers who were his subjects, and Mitchum - in an early, star-making role - combines grit with gut-wrenching emotion. Pyle advised Wellman on this treatment, but sadly never saw the end result: He was killed in action in 1945.
The Story of GI Joe.......2007-05-27
My father served in the New Zealand infantry Italy during WWII - he always said that this was the most realistic war film he had ever seen. I served in the New Zealand infantry in Vietnam; The Story of GI Joe really distills the grind of the infantry experience, especially the scenes where Captain Walker and his men are living in holes in the mud below 'the Monastery' (Cassino)and are steadily getting whittled down. One of the top 5 war films.
A GIs Life.......2006-11-10
This movie seemed to accurately reflect with a GI's life was like during the Italian campaign of WWII. It did not show soldiers in clean uniforms fighting in dry sunny weather. Rather it showed the grim business of comabt under trying circumstances with characters that acted like real human beings.
The performances were good and the story interesting. Young people who play video war games and think combat is a game should watch this movie to get an understanding of what that generation of americans went through to give us the freedom we enjoy today.
Here Is Your War.......2005-02-27
I love the infantry because they are the underdogs. They are the mud-rain-frost-and-wind boys. They have no comforts, and they even learn to live without the necessities. And in the end they are the guys that wars can't be won without. - Ernie Pyle
Newspaper columnist Ernie Pyle reported from the front during World War Two, spending the majority of his time with the common infantry soldier and most often reporting on their daily doings, Pyle won the Pulitzer Prize in 1944 for `distinguished war correspondence during the year 1943.' William Wellman's 1945 ERNIE PYLE'S STORY OF G.I. JOE is one of the great World War II movies made by and for that generation. It's important, I think, to heed the full title. This movie is very much Ernie Pyle's vision of the war. You can find a number of columns written by Pyle by doing a simple internet search, and anthologies of his war reporting are still in print.
The movie episodically follows Pyle (Burgess Meredith) and the infantrymen of Company C from their landing in Italy to the eve of their assault on Rome. The low-key approach Pyle brought to his writing is duplicated here. There's a gritty realism without the false heroics or gung ho attitude that marked most recruitment movies of that era. It's an ensemble work, with Meredith and then newcomer Robert Mitchum (who was nominated for an Academy Award for his role as Capt. Walker) standing out in a strong lineup.
This is a movie made by, and for, the WWII generation. The soldiers - your sons, America - are tired and dirty and somehow inured to the killing. As Pyle wrote, and this movie captures, `every line and sag of their bodies speaks their inhuman exhaustion.' They're shown in episodes that could almost be given column headings - The Company Adopts a Dog, Sarge Looks for a Phonograph, Christmas at the Front, A Marriage During War.
STORY OF G.I. JOE is a wonderful movie that, upon release, claimed fans as diverse as Dwight Eisenhower (who said it was the greatest war movie he'd ever seen) to James Agee, who praised Mitchum `(t)he development of the character of [Lieutenant Walker] is so imperceptible and so beautifully done that, without any ability to wonder why, you accept him as a great man in his one open attempt to talk about himself and the war' in particular and the movie `(the) closing scene seems to me a war poem as great and as beautiful as any of Whitman's' in glowing terms indeed.
Ernie Pyle died while with the troops in Okinawa, shot down by a Japanese machine gunner on the island of Ie Shima. ERNIE PYLE'S STORY OF G.I. JOE is a fine testament to a great writer.
Ernie Pyle's coverage of the common soldier.......2005-02-14
This unforgettable classic, based on Ernie Pyle's "Here is Your War" and "Brave Men", is considered by many to be one of the best war films ever made. Even General Dwight Eisenhower considered it the best movie to come out of World War 2. William Wellman, the director, initially didn't want to make the movie, but after a telephone conversation with Ernie Pyle himself, Wellman relented. Wellman later admitted that Pyle's pleas for the common soldier were so touching that Wellman was nearly brought to tears.
"The Story of G.I. Joe" follows the beloved correspondant Pyle (played to perfection by Burgess Meredith) as he meets and becomes close friends with C Company of the 18th Infantry as they fight their way from Sicily to Rome in 1942 and 1943. Pyle becomes especially close to Captain Bill Walker (played by Robert Mitchum, in his oscar nominated breakthrough role). The combat scenes are brief but very realistic, and no one is safe from death on the battlefield (including the Captain).
This movie is an unflinching look at the daily struggles of the infantrymen, who struggle with the enemy troops and the mud. Wellman wisely used 150 veterans of the army's Italian campaign as extras, and gave some of them speaking parts. Unfortunately, many of these extras would later be killed fighting in the Pacific after the film was completed. And Ernie Pyle would also meet his death in the Pacific, killed by a sniper's bullet. "The Story of G.I. Joe" would be the one and only film he made that Wellman refused to watch.
Undoubtably one of the finest-crafted war films ever made, "The Story of G.I. Joe" is a lasting monument to not only Ernie Pyle's great coverage of the brave American foot soldiers, but also to the soldiers themselves, who loved Pyle more than all the other correspondants of World War 2. Perhaps the best line of the whole film is at the very end when Burgess Meredith (as the film's narrator) says, "And for those beneath the wooden crosses, there is nothing more we can do, except perhaps to pause and murmur, "Thanks, pal."

A place in my heart!.......2006-11-06
For me these G.I. Joe cartoons will always hold a special place in my heart. I can remember as a boy watching these and then playing with my Joe figures in the backyard. These kinds of cartoons are missing from TV today. It is a shame. I spent a lot of my childhood watching this cartoon and the seasons that followed.
Pick this up for your little boy... and take some time to watch it for yourself... Even if it is for the 100th time.
Almost Perfect.......2005-11-28
I have to say, even with a non-hi-def t.v this dvd comes through with perfect picture quality. The only downside I have found is the constant interuptions of the "We'll returen to.." and the "now back To" let alone the credits and sumaries for the episodes. It get's a little old having to skip through them. I still own the original in the over sized box, and that's the only thing I've found between the two that has me enjoying the video from time to time. But as I said for quality and sound there's no better than this DVD. Can't wait to get the seasons, yeah i'm that far behind.
A Retro Cartoon.......2005-11-04
G.I. Joe was my favourite cartoon of all time. Although the female roles are few and far between I always loved G.I. Joe for more than just that.
I guess Sargent Conrad S "Duke" Hauser was the first fictional character that I ever had a crush on.
I am also a purist when it comes to cartoons like this and that the version of G.I. Joe that DIC came up with can never measure up to the Marvel/Sunbow version.
The "Snowjob" theory..............2004-12-14
"They will fight for freedom whenever there's trouble, G.I. Joe is there. G.I. Joe!! Great American Hero. G.I. Joe is there".
With the beginning of these simple lyrics my Saturday mornings were never the same. I would rush to the television with my box of Frosted Flakes and pensively wait until I would see the blue of Cobra's shirts. Excitement would build, and I would be ready for the most engaging, most entertaining, most spectacular cartoon of the 80s. While some would follow as being "great" shows as well, G.I. Joe was the one that took the cake for young me. I would sing the songs, play with my figurines, and imagine that Cobra was crawling through my backyard ready to be attacked at any moment by my band of American rebels.
Ahhh, that was the life. Years later and I dare say "years" later, I found this series on Amazon, and I had to immediately purchase the set. To begin with, it came with an action figure, and my inner-child was already screaming on the floor begging my wife to buy it for me. When I got it home, I nervously opened the box, unsure as to what other memories of my childhood may escape the vault, I prepared for a cheap version of my childhood delight. To my surprise, it was outstanding. This is a great buy for anyone that remembers this program as well as I did growing up.
To begin, the transfer is outstanding. The sound is beautiful and it nearly felt as if those pesky gun-lasers were firing out of my television. It even includes (which some may find annoying) the original commercial breaks, which I only found more nostalgic. The two five-part "films" represented some of my favorite moments of G.I. Joe history. For those of you unfamiliar with the essentials of G.I. Joe, I have compiled a small list that will not only help you as you gather more about this program, but also as you buy this series.
1) There is a G.I. Joe named "Snowjob".
2) Cobra's weaponry never pierces the Joe's machines, yet only one shot from the G.I. Joes can send a Cobra vehicle into a million pieces.
3) More weaponry is used in one episode than the entire Iraq conflict
4) Destro's head will not rust, even in the rain.
5) Cobra is one of the most brilliant terrorist organizations around. Their knowledge of science is impeccable and should be studied more often in the college setting. The G.I. Joes do not have such smarts, but they can surely beat up the Cobra plan in a heartbeat.
6) Cobra infantry do not know how to aim.
7) No laser-bullet is wasted by a G.I. Joe.
8) Yes, there is a three way going on between Destro, Major Blood, and the Baroness (and later possibly Dr. Mindbender).
9) Every time (without question) the G.I. Joes do something good, they have to shout "YOOO JOE" no matter how many good things they hear in a matter of minutes.
10) I repeat, there is a G.I. Joe named "Snowjob" (Is anyone else laughing hysterically?)
Overall, this was a beautiful series that finally got the respect that it deserved. Thank you RINO for releasing this amazing package and for the products that you continually revitalize. G.I. Joe was a life-altering series, and I cannot wait to get my hands on more!
Grade: ***** out of *****
Childhood memories relived here.......2004-12-01
This was a cool cartoon, especially considering that it was competing against the widely popular comic book, which had an on-going storyline, the characters were pretty true to the comics, most of the time, the 1983 cartoon itself was pretty colorful & fast paced, as was the following 1984 one, the series that started in 1985 lost its origin & focused on less important characters, but the 1983 & 1984 mini-series was great with all the great characters we love, now my question is this>>> where is the live motion picture, below are my pick of actors that I think should or could be casted in a live action film, they are as follows>>
Rutger Hauer(Ladyhawke) as Duke
Scarlett Johansson as Scarlett
Wesley Snipes as Stalker
Ray Park (Darth Maul) as Snake Eyes
Ving Rhames as Roadblock
Scott Glenn as Gung-Ho
Jude Law as Hawk
Jim Cavisel (Passoin of Christ) as Flash
Eric Bana (Troy) as Clutch
Hugh Jackman as Flint
Diane Lane or Angelina Jolie as Lady J
Rodney Grant(Dances with Wolves) as Spirit
Anyone as Cobra Commander since he has no identity
The Rock as Destro
Catherine Zeta Jones as Baroness
Jet Li as Storm Shadow
Anyone as Firefly
Willem Dafoe as Major Bludd

It would be an exaggeration to say that Nick Broomfield solved the murders of Biggie and Tupac. Nonetheless, he makes a convincing case as to who the perpetrators were and why they weren't brought to justice. Broomfield (Kurt and Courtney), who narrates and appears on camera, comes across like a scruffy Robin Leach, but he's done his homework and sniffs out the clues with the tenacity of a bloodhound. Time and again, he refuses to be intimidated--even when his life appears to be at stake. Fortunately, he was able to convince Voletta Wallace, beloved mother of Biggie Smalls (a.k.a. the Notorious B.I.G.), to cooperate, and that opened many doors. Unfortunately, Afeni Shakur, Tupac's mother, refused to participate or to allow access to his music. She had nothing to fear. Broomfield is fair to both rappers, although the soundtrack is all-Biggie. Easily one of the most fascinating documentaries of 2002. --Kathleen C. Fennessy
Customer Reviews:
I liked this.......2006-04-12
It has an honest in your face tone to it and the style of the interviews lends a high degree of credibility.
The obvious reluctance of the people being interviewed makes it known that these murders were seriously planned by persons who can make ones life very uncomfortable..even cease.
This is a highly believable documentary.
That Suge has something to do with Tupac's 'disappearance' is wthout a doubt ...but I doubt the truth will ever be known.
Did Suge Do It?.......2005-11-01
I've always been interested in the theories of Tupac's death, so decided to buy this documentary. This obviously deals entirely with the theory that Suge Knight arranged the hit, and then also Biggie's death, to make it look like retaliation. The problem with this theory is that i wasn't buying it before and after watching this im still not. It goes something like this, Suge suspected that Pac was possibly trying to get out of Death Row, he realised that if he killed him, he would have access to all his music, which amounted to hundreds of tracks. Also he would probably make more money from him if dead, as he would have become sort of a martyr. Up to this point it is believable, what isn't are the circumstances of his death. If Suge wanted Pac dead, why would he have a car pull up alongside and fire across the car right where he was also sitting (he also received a minor flesh wound), there would have been better ways to arrange this. Nick Broomfield fails to answer this, and i still can't really beleive Suge Knight planned it. It is much more likely that Orlando Anderson (the guy beaten up at the MGM beforehand) was behind the killing, or even that Biggie himself arranged the hit with the Crips that carried it out (though im not really buying that one either). Overall this documentary was interesting and worth watching, but it failed to provide anything more than speculation, and no answers.
Ignore martee and his vice.god accounts.......2005-08-18
Hes upset of successful people because they can use their subconscious for success but unlike martee/druggie tell amazon.com to delete him.Buy this dvd if you like 2 pac, i don`t like this dvd much but i respect the fact he used his spiritual subconscious for real success.
The real scoop .......2004-12-29
I think two or three men (mainly one) Go out out to find out about as much information they can get about 2pac and Notorious B.I.G. They go to some of their old friends, relatives people like that. They even went to Suge Knight that was in prison when they interviewed him. And Biggie's mother and even more 2pac's father in the flesh. All were on this movie. Telling their sides of how they felt and what happened with them since the death of 2pac and Biggie.
A Fascinating Murder Mystery........2004-07-05
Perhaps no murders in the music culture from the last decade have caused so much fascination and debate as those of Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls. The killings of these two rap stars remain important footnotes in the debate about the influence of rap music and the relevance of rap in today's popular culture. Nick Broomfield's latest film, "Biggie And Tupac," is both an exploration of the gangsta rap underworld and a fascinating search for answers and testimony involving the murders. As was the case with Broomfield's previous icon murder mystery, "Kurt & Courtney" which tried to find a link between Courtney Love and the suicide between her rock star husband, Nirvana's Kurt Cobain, "Biggie And Tupac" doesn't solve the case or even come to a solid conclusion. Instead it presents us with a gallery of both corrupt and truth searching characters and lots of questions, many valid. Fans of Broomfield know he will stop at nothing to at least get a few comments, the man will try everything from sneaking mikes to chasing down reluctant sources to get some form of information. The stakes here are higher because the people Broomfield is investigating are not angry Punk rockers or disgruntled former friends but people linked to dangerous California gang circles, corrupt policemen and a record label boss who fashions himself as a modern day Al Capone. What we get out of the film is that Tupac Shakur and Biggie Smalls started off as good friends and as soon as they found real success with their craft other forces such as Suge Knight began to influence events with a negative air due to money and rivalries with figures such as Sean "Puffy" Combs. The main theory here is that Knight had connections with corrupt L.A. P.D. officers who worked for Death Row records on the side and planned BOTH executions and then blame them on the East Coast vs. West Coast "rap wars." It may sound like a wild idea, but look at the evidence and people Broomfield uncovers and it becomes more valid. And here Broomfield has more material to use. "Kurt & Courtney" was plagued by Courtney Love's restriction of Broomfield using footage and music, and eventhough Shakur's mother doesn't let him use songs, Broomfield uses interviews, early performance footage and photographs to describe the rise of Biggie and Tupac and point out those who were present and witnessed important events. It's a suspenseful ride at times, playing like a real life murder mystery. We learn a great deal about the gang world of California where being a "snitch" is a death sentence and Broomfield gives a tour of the excessive, edgy world of rap music. Bodygaurds and ex-cops are interviewed, all telling what they saw and we realize that indeed these are two murders surrounded by such strange stories, eyewitness accounts and corruption that there is no way these were random killings. And Broomfield does it with gusto and style, never relenting and even going for the big fish when he gets access into a prison facility to face Suge Knight in person. "Biggie & Tupac" is the kind of documentary those who don't even care for rap can enjoy because it is more about the mysteries surrounding the two stars' murders, it plays like a dark detective story that still hasn't found an answer. Broomfield scores again.

Yo Joe!.......2006-11-06
One of the best cartoons of all time! Great fun, and good for you too. This cartoon helped shape who I am, and that is not a bad thing. Growing up watching G.I. Joe I learned a lot about the kind of person I wanted to be. This is an example of the type of quality cartoons that we just do not see being made today.
These third party sellers suck!!!.......2006-02-16
Hey guys, if you still want this set at a reasonable price, there are still lots of stores that have them.
I'm not going to name them due to the fact that the third party seller a-holes would probably buy them to sell at their bent over prices.
They're just a bunch of punks trying to get rich off dvd sets since they're too stupid to be reasonable.
This dvd set is still selling at the $40 range at stores along with the Transformer sets.
Don't buy from the third party seller punks (good luck selling at your $80 price you a-holes).

In January of 2004, Kid Rhino Home Video released the first half of Season One onto a 4-disc DVD set, G.I. Joe Season 1 part 1. In addition to 27 uncut episodes, the discs featured interviews with writer Christy Marx and voice director Wally Burr, vintage public service announcements, and original broadcast audio. A collectible animation cel was also included in the packaging.
G.I. Joe Season 1, Part 1.......2005-02-04
I have to admit that Rhino really did the dvd collection on G.I. Joe the same way they did Transformers. I find it hard to believe that both Transformers and G.I. Joe were produced from the same company and they both shared the same voice actors. One episode from G.I. Joe is actually my favorite and that's "Operation Mind Menace". This episode features six Transformer actors which included Peter Cullen, Frank Welker, and Michael Bell. It's makes everyone think that the actors who did Transformers get to do G.I. Joe. Operation Mind Menace also has a Transformer music in it when Airborne and Flash (voiced respectively by Peter Cullen and Frank Welker) were making their escape from Cobra's island base. If you're a Transformer fans, you will love this dvd collection.
A classic example of reactive vs. proactive........2005-01-13
As a youth I used to run home after school as well as awaken early Saturday mornings to enjoy this show about a ruthless villain hell-bent on terrorizing the world and the only organization strong enough to foil his plans daily. To me it was the ultimate example of good vs. evil and no other program could top it. It was the 80s, life was good and the G.I. Joes were the epitome of a young American boy's dream.
Older now, I purchased this on a whim to see if I could see if I could recreate the joy that I felt as a child. I wanted to revisit my old nemesis Cobra as well as catch one last glimpse of the elusive Lady Jay. After watching all four discs of this release, I came to a conclusion that would be blind to a child, but very apparent to an adult. The G.I. Joe organization is the classic business example of reactive vs. proactive. If we were to define bot h the Joes and the Cobra teams, the Joes would definatly be reactive, while the Cobra organization would definitely be the proactive. Each episode opens with the Joes relaxing or taking time off instead of doing what they should be, which is trying to destroy the Cobra threat from the world. Sadly, the action does not start until Cobra initiates it by creating some imaginative and creative strategy to take over the world. Then the battle ensues with the Joes always allowing Cobra Commander to leave without recourse. They are never too excited about actually capturing the Commander, but instead that the citizens of the world are safe. Do they not realize that if they were proactive and captured Cobra Commander immediately, the threat would be eliminated?
This question leads me to my next revelation. Is it possible that the reason that the Joes let Cobra go everytime is because without Cobra, Lady Jay, Hawk, Snake Eyes, and Roadblock would all be unemployed? Could you imagine Quick Kick serving you some fries behind the counter of a McDonalds? So, maybe Cobra needs the Joes as much as the Joes need Cobra. They live together in a form of zen unity. Ponder that for a moment.
Also, it became clearer that as the episodes progressed how much of a sci-fi theme this series engulfed. There was more than just regular battles, but lasers, huge machines that could control the weather, psychics, and even this strange little man known as the Gamesmaster (which is my FAVORITE episode in this set). Watch it again and I think you will see the references that I speak about.
When I was younger, G.I. Joe was my favorite cartoon and I couldn't wait to go outside and pretend that I was one of the Joes fighting the notorious Cobra. Now, older and wiser, I cannot wait to play Cobra. From a business sense they are aggressive, competitive, imaginative, and creative. Daily they have new, fresh ideas on how to dominate the world while the Joes just wait around for Cobra to make their move. I would have to side with Cobra in today's market. I think you would as well.
Overall, a very enjoyable series even revisited years later. I am hoping to expand my collection to include the other sets as well, but to re-emerge myself into the series, this was the perfect opener!
Go COBRA!!!!!!!

G.I. Joe (1983) was one of the many product-driven television series that aired in syndication during the early '80s, following the unprecedented commercial success of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe. In the program, "G.I. Joe" is not the name of an individual, but "the code name for America's daring, highly trained special mission force." The members of this force conduct a neverending battle against the "ruthless terrorist organization" Cobra. The battles take the form of Jonny Quest-style fantasy adventures, ostensibly set in the real world, but where anything can happen. The Joes fight foes that range from a small herd of cloned dinosaurs on a Pacific Island to the gods of ancient Egypt, whom they encounter in the tomb reportedly laden with treasure. The dozens of characters all have military-sounding code names--Deep Six, Gung Ho, Air Tight, Snake Eyes, Ace, Bazooka, Ship Wreck, Toll Booth--and foiling Cobra's plots requires not only all their strength, but every piece of equipment toymaker Hasbro could devise (and sell).
Although the animation is minimal and the vocal performances stilted, fans agree that the first two seasons and the feature, which were animated by Sunbow/Marvel, are better than the later version of the shows from DIC. But these cartoons are more likely to appeal to nostalgic collectors of GI Joe toys and memorabilia than to students of the art of animation. (Unrated, suitable for ages 8 and older: violence) --Charles Solomon

One of the best of the 80's and today!.......2006-11-06
This cartoon series was one of the best of the 1980's and still stands the test of time. It is a lot of fun to watch and remember, but also still has the power to capture kids' attention.
the second half of season 1.......2005-11-04
First off let me say I wish season 1 was all together in a box set instead of having it seperated (how confusing).
This is a smash hit featuring America's ultimate heros. Includes episodes such as "The Germ", "The Viper is Coming", "Bazooka Saw a Sea Serpent", and many more.
The extras side, interviews with Hank Garrett, who voiced Dialtone, and Larry Houston, the producer and storyboard artist, are included. Houston's segment is pretty informative and provides some great on G.I. Joe. Also featured is a secret message from "Sins of the Fathers," an uncensored and a censored version of a scene from "Into Your Tent I Will Silently Creep," animation mistakes.

G.I. Joe at its finest.......2004-07-02
If the 55-episode first season of G.I. Joe is the show's best, then this collection is quite frankly the crown jewels. Among the episodes included in this box set are "There's No Place Like Springfield" (the series best episode), "Worlds Without End" (the alternately shocking and hilarious "What If...?" two-parter), "The Wrong Stuff" (a still-timely parody of TV and the, er, minds, behind it), and "Cold Slither" (the hilarious fan-favorite featuring the Dreadnoks as the rock band Cold Slither).
While the animation is sometimes lacking by today's standards, it was nothing short of a revolution in 1985, as was the writing, which is still some of the best in the history of televised animation in the US. The voice acting is also top-notch, which comes as no surprise given a cast that includes such legends as Michael Bell, B.J. Ward, Neil Ross, John Stephenson, Frank Welker, and the late Chris Latta.
The episodes on this disc are again remastered excellently, although "Hearts and Cannons" seems to have video from a cleaned up broadcast master, as opposed to the 35mm source film. Also, a long-standing edit in "There's No Place Like Springfield" Part II has been retained, as has been the case for all airings except the very first. The one special feature is an interview with Bill Ratner and Mary McDonald-Lewis, the voices of Flint and Lady Jaye, which is great fun to watch.
Despite the upheld edit (wherein Shipwreck's "daughter" points a bazooka at the Joe and calls him a "drip" before being knocked down by Polly), which will hopefully be corrected by Rhino, this set is another dream come true for G.I. Joe fans, cartoon fans, and especially Flint and Lady Jaye fans (which isn't to say that the episodes themselves don't provide some goodness for long-suffering Duke and Scarlett fans, mind you). Strongly recommended.

Hasbro's perennially popular soldier boy G.I. Joe returns in a new CGI adventure that packs enough adventure to please longtime fans of the '80s animated series (on which this feature is based) and newcomers to the Joe universe. In Valor vs. Venom, the villainous Cobra Commander organizes worldwide abductions in order to fuel Cobra's latest global domination plot--an army of super-soldiers created from genetically altered humans and animals. When the Joe team's leader, General Hawk, is kidnapped, his second-in-command, Duke, rallies the troops to save their leader and stop Cobra's nefarious scheme. Despite the outlandish plot (even by G.I. Joe standards), Valor vs. Venom delivers what Joe's audience wants: lots of combat using a variety of high-tech weapons and gear and carried out by a cast of valiant heroes and hissable villains. The CGI animation, while a bit stiff, allows the filmmakers to pitch Joe's adventures on a grander scale, and the film's epic scope includes battles on every point on the globe (though concerned parents should know that the violence is very tame). --Paul Gaita

let go of the past folks.......2007-03-26
People should be happy that this movie was made instead of only comparing it to the 80's series. I personally love this movie and so does my five year old son. Even my wife likes it. There will never be another Joe series, movie, etc. that is better than the old toons. The ninja scenes are a highlight and the music is even semi-cool. Check it out or try it again.
didn't make sense..........2006-08-01
i don't know i watched this but why didn't it make sense??? i mean they were all over the place duke and commander fighting in a building then it switched to storm shadow and snake eyes fighting in a jungle what?!?! well other than a few problems it was ok.
Not that bad.......2006-01-14
I bought this for my son who is five, he loves the movie and watches it daily while playing with his G.I. Joe figures. If your expecting to see something that resembles the original cartoon series then you will be disapointed, but overall it really isn't that bad. It has a positive message for kids, eventhough it does show some mild violence later on in the movie. For an adult it's really boring but it keeps my child interested and that's pretty difficult to do with a young child!
wack.......2005-09-20
the onyl reason i got this was because i lvoe gi joe and wanted to see how the new re makes were as far as writers voices and looks as cgi characters but unfortunatly the story sucked and was boring , the bad guys were horrible as far as depth to character the movie was a ploy toget chumps like me to buy that reminice on the good old gi joe, the toys look awesome so i figured it would be nice, but instead i wanted to fall asleep, or shoot myself, shame on whoever was in charge of letting this new re cration turn out so horriblee and borderline homo
I missed the original series.......2005-09-20
This is an all new G.I. Joe adventure for an all new generation, so I shouldn't except the same things. With that said, I still somewhat enjoyed this, but the use of CG instead of hand drawn animation is what really made me mad. It's not the worst CG I've seen, it was actually pretty good for a direct to DVD release, but it just seem too different from the old cartoon and comics to have it feel like the same series. Despite these problems, at a mere 77 minutes, I was able to sit and enjoy it as a free rental as the story itself was still classic Joe. If you want to rent G.I. Joe rent the original series, if you want something new get this one.

G.I. JOE Season 2 Part 1 DVD set that was released by Rhino is a true disappointment........2007-04-18
Let me start off by making one thing clear I love G.I. JOE as much today as I did when I was a child back in the 1980's The animation in G.I. JOE was very high grade for it's time. The show used a large pallet of colors and the quality checking was leaps and bounds beyond one of my other favorites of the time The Transformers. The stories were actually quite well written and equally well acted. Taking all of these things in to consideration I personally feel that The G.I. JOE Season 2 Part 1 DVD set that was released by Rhino is a true disappointment. Rhino took obvious shortcuts with this set! (VIDEO) The video quality on these DVD's is actually rather good, although there is some very obvious grain and dirt visible throughout. These visual blemishes could have bean VERY EASILY REPAIRED! (AUDIO) The original broadcast audio is relatively clear and easy to hear although it is in;as its name suggests its original mono sound. Both the 2.0 stereo and 5.1 stereo options sound FAR BETTER than the original broadcast mono! Witch brings up the question what is my complaint? The answer is that Rhino obviously used the British soundtrack including all the idiotic hacked up re dubs for the U.S. DVD release! Nonsense such as calling Sergeant Slaughter Sergeant Slammer and G.I. Joe Action Force! These dubs were badly done in the first place! The voices that were used for most of the conversion from G.I. Joe to Action Force were NOT even close to the originals. In addition to this the lines were very poorly read! Converting them to stereo just makes it all the more obvious! Rhino should be ashamed of them selves for using the British stereo instead of doing a proper re mastering job of there own! Thus making the stereo options to damned annoying to be anything else other than truly WORTHLESS! Rhino very clearly did nothing more than take the British release and convert it from PAL to NTSC. Granted This problem only seems to be present in Arise Serpentor Arise part 5 yet since the problem exists at all I call it evidence of a cop out! This kind of pathetic cop out is a TRUE OUTRAGE to fans such as my self who watched these episodes when they were first broadcast back in 1986.
These DVD's are now out of print and buying the sets can run you as much as $120.00 OR MORE per set! Due to the combination of the high prices and lame cop outs of this release by Rhino the best I can do is recommend it as rental!
SHAME ON YOU RHINO!
Yo Joe!.......2006-11-06
More of the great G.I. Joe cartoon series. It is sad that Rhino will not be putting out Season 2, Part 2. I would have liked to had the whole series on DVD.
As it stands, this is a great set. The cartoons are fun for kids and even adults wanting to relive a little of their youth.
These G.I. Joe cartoons from the 80's had a lot of values and thoughts put into them that is missing from the cartoons of today. This is so much better then the Anime crap that kids get force feed from every channel today.
Great set! Even with limited number of episodes........2006-02-11
There are some great stories here. And it's at least a part of a season, not like many other cartoon shows that get a couple episodes released here and there. But Sony really needs to either rerelease the series or finish it up. We've been waiting a long time already. Even after all of these years, I find the series to be good fun entertainment.
Yo-Joe.......2005-11-04
This season 2 Part 1 should be part of everyone's video collection. Their's no better way to enjoy it then inside your living room. This video has a lot of action and adventure the animation I give it 9/10 go get this case.
A little fresh news on Season 2 Part 2.......2005-05-13
As some have noticed the second set of season two has not been released. Rhino lost the rights to the Sunbow series and Sony Entertainment picked them up. Who knows when or if Sony will re-release them?
The 5.1 soundtrack has an error during the last episode of "Arise Serpentor, Arise" that contains the UK version, hence the different names. Just put the soundtrack back to "original broadcast" and you'll be set.
I hope this helps, if you have any further questions, I'll try to help xerofall@comcast.net

The best animated series of the 80's.......2005-11-04
This is the best of the 80's! It was always action packed and there was tons and tons of characters to like! The music was good and the color and animation was great! I love seeing Cobra Commander and his troops in red and blue.
** Gen-X-er says YOOOOOOO JOE! ! **.......2005-01-19
I am 32 yrs old and a girl! My brother got me into this series when I was a young teen and I was swept away. What a great animated series. They don't make animated series the way they used to... the 1980's and early 1990's were great for stuff like GI Joe and the original animated X-Men series. All you can do now is buy this great stuff. ** Now you know ... and knowing is half the battle! ** G.I. JOE!!!!!
The "Snowjob" Theory............2004-12-14
G.I. Joe was a life-altering series, and I cannot wait to get my hands on more!

yoooooo,joe!!.......2003-05-30
this review is in regards to the collector's edition of the 2 disc set which includes a repaint of the ever popular ninja commando; snake eyes. JOE TRIVIA: the first VHS miniseries was released with the series 83 duke action figure inside.
this mini series brings back cool memeories when certain syndicated american cartoons were cool. before the anime explosion of course.
now on to my favorite and not-so-favorite parts of the disc set...
the enclosed booklet pertaining to gijoe's history was very informative dispite a mistakes. I.E. Mego was not responsible for the six million dollar action figure, it was hasbro's once rival and parent company; KENNER who manufactured not only the six million dollar man toyline but star wars as well.
the interviews were ok, i loved ron friedman's perspective (or retrospective) regarding the series he helped define. on the other hand, i didn't care much more for marv wolfman's interview..too many "er's and ah's" and LASERS IN THE NIGHT was one of the worst epidsodes of the 1985-1986 series.
one thing i would have loved to have seen was the animated comic book commercials not only were they cool, but most were better executed than the regualer gijoe epidsodes. please rhino, put those awesome 20 spots in the next 2 disc installment plus add commentary from ron friedman, he had plenty to say unlike wolfman. props to the late archie goodwin of marvel comics who created the concept of joe's arch nemises COBRA.
I love the opening sequences of all the joe series. I.E. zartan has one of the joes running until recondo jumps outta knowhere and kicks zartan where the logo/title appears. how cool was that?
Classic G.I. Joe.......2003-05-14
When the original G.I. Joe miniseries were (finally) released on DVD in their original, uncut form in February, the Joe-watching public was promised a follow-up release with special features. That set (which you see now) has turned out to be well worth the wait.
Firstly, the packaging is more deluxe than the earlier release, and includes a booklet with a layman's history or G.I. Joe in general. Additionally, there's a Snake Eyes figure-a repaint of the original (more or less), with Timber (again, sort of, as it's not the original Timber mold from the '80s), which mimics the midnight blue color scheme from the MASS Device miniseries. The only drawback is that the packaging hypes Snake Eyes as "one of the premier characters" released in connection with the 1983 A Real American Hero miniseries-something that is far truer about Duke, who spent 1983 as the line's primary mail-in exclusive before being released in stores and was the star of the MASS Device episodes.
Second, of course, are the episodes themselves, which are the A Real American Hero and Revenge of Cobra miniseries, completely restored and remastered (and excellently so, at that). If you purchased the previous release, you know what you're getting here.
The last part of this set are interviews with writers Marv Wolfman and Ron Friedman. Wolfman's interview certainly informative, emphasizing the freedom he had while working for Sunbow (and equally emphasizing that character development is why Joe succeeded, in addition to that creative freedom), and how the toy companies might benefit from allowing that freedom to return in their cartoons. He also admits freely to liking Quick Kick (whose development he was most responsible for) and Cobra Commander, which is no surprise given how much fun he had with them in "Lasers in the Night" (an episode Wolfman is understandably proud of). The rest of Wolfman's interview discusses his politics and the politics that allowed for the '80s success of G.I. Joe, with a few jabs at the lesser cartoons of the '70s for good measure. Friedman's interview is, simply put, a trip. His comments are often funny (like the example slamming Kevin Costner's Robin Hood movie as a violation of the spirit of a popular franchise), and certainly worth viewing. He does seem to take a bit more credit for creating the series than some would like (including taking a direct jab at the old filecards), but he does illustrate the key points in how he wrote the initial miniseries very well, and in very entertaining fashion. This interview alone is probably reason enough to buy the set if you purchased the version without special features. All in all, another excellent job by Rhino.
