The question facing any viewer of the Japanese CG feature Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children is: do you have to know the games on which it's based in order to understand the film? And the answer is: it certainly helps. But even complete novices (i.e., most parents) in the Final Fantasy world will find some entertainment in its wealth of fantasy-based action, and the animation never fails to astonish. Picking up two years after an epic battle between the forces of good (represented by brooding soldier Cloud) and evil (Cloud's former general, Sephiroth), FFVII opens in the devastated city of Midgard, whose youthful occupants suffer from a ghastly disease known as Geostigma. A trio of brothers arrives with what appears to be a cure for the plague, but their gesture conceals a more sinister purpose: to revive Sephiroth and bring about the end of the world. Cloud and his companions must once again rise to the occasion to stop the siblings and the revived Sephiroth from unleashing total destruction. Complex and self-referential to the point of occasional incomprehension, Final Fantasy VII will definitely be most appreciated by fans of the game series, but if others can look past the numbing dialogue and frenetic action (which is a bit too intense for very young children), the film offers a carefree and action-packed viewing experience. The two-disc set contains the original Japanese language version of the film as well as an English-dubbed edition (Rachel Leigh Cook and Christy Carlson Romano, among others, provide the vocal talent) and a version edited for the Venice Film Festival. A 30-minute featurette that recaps the Final Fantasy story up to VII, as well as a making-of documentary, deleted scenes, and promotions for future Final Fantasy VII games and products round out the extras. --Paul Gaita
Customer Reviews:
Fundamentally, just a plain bad movie with a deeper let-down for the series........2007-07-04
First of all let me just say that my expectations were not too high for this movie. I, as we all should, have considered that this movie is a sequel to one of the most renowned games of our time - Final Fantasy 7 - and as such I didn't expect it to surpass any such kind of sparkling record.
However, even with my lenient expectations for this film, I found that I was thoroughly disappointed with it. And anyone should be, because the simple movie fundamentals that we all would normally expect to see in a film (i.e. feasible plot, character development, sensible dialogue, ...) were not to be found here. It should always raise a red flag when the dialogue seems to be more about getting to the next fight sequence than about the actual plot or related to the plot. And when the preceding plotline of Final Fantasy 7, which this film is supposed to follow, is taken into consideration the more complex, series-related inconsistencies add a deeper confusion to the already fundamentally underdeveloped film.
As I feared would happen, this movie most seems like a final attempt by Square to squeeze all the money from the Final Fantasy 7 fanbase for all it's worth while riding off the fame Final Fantasy 7 the game has brought them. In other words, this film resembles the infamous "filler" episodes that we all fear, but even worse since it is a poorly developed filler.
As you will see, this film captures its audience purely with it's magnificent graphics. While I too agree that the graphics used to render this film are absolutely astounding, I am inclined to remind the human race that there is more to life than the "shiny shiny!"
Additionally, I expected at the least to enjoy some original, and generally absolutely beautiful, masterpieces of music from famed Final Fantasy 7 game composer Nobuo Uematsu. But even here I found that I was disappointed and thoroughly surprised at the same time. The music in this film, again composed majorly by Nobuo Uematsu, did not reach or even get near the quality of the classic compositions from the Final Fantasy 7 game. An entirely new sort of emotional quality was present in the Advent Children soundtrack - one which resembles a typical poor quality action movie.
Folks, I'm sorry to break it to you, but this is why Nobuo Uematsu is leaving Square. In his own words, Mr. Uematsu has revealed that the company is moving too quickly for his taste. And to that, I salute you Nobuo Uematsu. Always revel in quality, not quantity.
the best animated movie ever.......2007-06-28
This is the kind of movie that you will want to watch more than once - at times, the action goes by quickly, and people that played through the Playstation game will probably pick up on more than other viewers ... there is so much incredible detail that was put into this movie that it's hard to appreciate it, or even pick up on all of it with just one viewing
I disagree that watchers who haven't played the game won't necessarily be interested in this - I agree that there are plenty of tie-ins to the game, but it's not that difficult for viewers to figure out what's going on, and the complex relationships between the characters become obvious as the movie plays out ... this movie is so well made and complete that it's easy to become attached to the characters without knowing them from the game
The sound track is superb - the use of heavy metal all the way to opera and how it's all used together in ways is just amazing ... and the clever use of a few FFVII game sound effects at perfectly placed times was hilarious in one scene, (for those who haven't played the game, listen for one of the main character's cell phone ring tone)
I can't say enough good things about the story line and the `acting' - the voiceovers are second to none ... the action sequences are just breathtaking and the plot progresses evenly, quickly and with a lot of detail (knowing the back story isn't necessary, but is helpful to fully understand the relationships)
I've watched this in both the English and Japanese versions, and both are excellent - once you see it a few times in English, give the Japanese a try
I would highly recommend this to anyone ... and like another reviewer of this movie, I also downloaded it before it came to the US - but, I also suggest anyone who DL's this to buy the DVD to support Square-Enix - this is revolutionary movie making, and we need to show our support so they continue to produce titles like this ... plus, the original DVD has deleted scenes and trailers that are well worth the small price
So, as stated earlier, even if you downloaded this, BUY THE DVD!

Brings Back Memories of the Series.......2007-06-08
I just ordered this set and can't wait to get it. Anyway, this is a great set for those who love Final Fantasy. Final Fantasy VII in particular as this is part of that series. I already have the game, Dirge of Cerberus, a figurine, now this and the set. It's a great series for fans and the movie itself is great. I have the standard one of the movie and watch it all the time. I highly recommend this to Final Fantasy or just FFVII fans or those who like action movies...though I highly recommend playing the game first so you know what's going on or read about the events of the game.

Freely adapted from Charles Frazier's beloved bestseller, Cold Mountain boasts an impeccable pedigree as a respectable Civil War love story, offering everything you'd want from a romantic epic except a resonant emotional core. Everything in this sweeping, Odyssean journey depends on believing in the instant love that ignites during a very brief encounter between genteel, city-bred preacher's daughter Ada (Nicole Kidman) and Confederate soldier Inman (Jude Law), who deserts the battlefield to return, weary and wounded, to Ada's inherited farm in the rural town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina. In an epic (but dramatically tenuous) case of absence making hearts grow fonder, Inman endures a treacherous hike fraught with danger (and populated by supporting players including Philip Seymour Hoffman, Natalie Portman, and others) while the struggling, inexperienced Ada is aided by the high-spirited Ruby (Renée Zellweger), forming a powerful farming partnership that transforms Ada into a strong, lovelorn survivor. The film's episodic structure slightly weakens its emotional impact, and it's fairly obvious that director Anthony Minghella is striving to repeat the prestigious romanticism of his Oscar®-winning hit The English Patient. For the most part it works, especially in the dynamic performances of Zellweger and Kidman, and the explosive 1864 battle of Petersburg, Virginia, is recreated with violent, percussive intensity. Those who admired Frazier's novel may regret some of the changes made in Minghella's adaptation (the ending is particularly altered), but Cold Mountain remains a high-class example of grand, old-fashioned filmmaking, boosted by star power of the highest order. --Jeff Shannon
Description
Nicole Kidman (Academy Award(R) Winner -- Best Actress, THE HOURS, 2002) stars with Academy Award(R) winner Renée Zellweger (Best Supporting Actress, COLD MOUNTAIN, 2003) and Academy Award® nominee Jude Law (Best Actor, COLD MOUNTAIN). At the dawn of the Civil War, the men of Cold Mountain, North Carolina, rush to join the Confederate army. Ada (Kidman) has vowed to wait for Inman (Law), but as the war drags on and letters go unanswered, she must find the will to survive. At war's end, hearts will be dashed, dreams fulfilled, and the strength of the human spirit tested ... but not broken! Directed by Academy Award® winner Anthony Minghella (Best Director, THE ENGLISH PATIENT, 1996).
Customer Reviews:
A memorable viewing experience.......2007-06-15
I saw many potential pitfalls going into Anthony Minghella's 2003 epic "Cold Mountain". One, Anthony Minghella directed the film. He's the chap who lensed "The English Patient" back in 1996. I never saw that movie, but what I'd heard and read didn't sound promising. A schmaltzy romance set during World War II? No thanks. Two, "Cold Mountain" stars Nicole Kidman, Jude Law, and Renee Zellweger. Ugh. I can't stand Kidman and her pinched little nose. I also don't care much for Jude Law, an actor trying to set the world's record for the most movies made in less than five years. And Renee Zellweger? Forget about it, baby. An actress known for appearing in chick flicks and romantic comedies, Zellweger's presence in this film signaled storm clouds on the horizon for this viewer. I'd rather rip my fingernails off with a pair of pliers than watch a Renee Zellweger picture. Third, and finally, I heard that the central element in "Cold Mountain" is a romantic entanglement between Kidman and Law. Again, let me utter a hearty 'Ugh'. I looked at the film's runtime, 154 minutes, and blanched in horror. No way am I sitting down for two and a half hours to watch two performers I don't like make kissy faces at one another.
"Cold Mountain," set during the bleakest hours of the American Civil War, follows the various misadventures of two characters, Inman (Law) and Ada Monroe (Kidman). The latter moves to the small town of Cold Mountain, North Carolina to care for her ailing preacher father (Donald Sutherland). To say that Ada is a fish out of water in this tiny village is an understatement. She knows nothing about farming, the economic engine that fuels Cold Mountain, and her outfits and manners are woefully out of place in the sticks. Nonetheless, she soon strikes up a rather odd relationship with the grubby Inman. The two never say much to each other nor do they spend much time together, but it's definitely a case of love at first sight. Before the two can form a more lasting relationship, the war rears its ugly head. All the young men in Cold Mountain-- including Inman--can't wait to take up arms for the Confederacy, and he soon marches off to fight the Yankee invaders. As millions of young men throughout history have discovered, however, war isn't all its cracked up to be. After Inman nearly dies in a terrible battle, he decides to desert and head back home to Ada.
Inman's journey home assumes epic proportions as he encounters all sorts of odd characters and life threatening scenarios. He runs into a shifty chap by the name of Reverend Veasey (Philip Seymour Hoffman), helps carve up a dead cow, narrowly escapes doom at the hands of Junior (Giovanni Ribisi in a performance one simply must see to believe), and protects a woman named Sara (Natalie Portman) from Yankee depredations. Everywhere around him lurks violent death and temptations of the heart, yet he continues his journey home to the lovely Ada. Speaking of our young heroine, she's also fallen on hard times. The sudden death of her father leaves Ada in dire straits. Complicating matters is a local thug with designs on her property, a thug who also happens to head up a vigilante squad. Monroe nearly starves to death until a local sends over the loquacious Ruby (Zellweger) to help bring the farm back to life. This young firecracker knows everything there is to know about agriculture, and in no time the two strike up an unlikely bond that provides the film with many humorous situations. As we shift between these two parts of the movie, we wonder whether Inman and Ada will ever meet up again. And if they do, what happens next?
I think that's enough summary to convince you that I watched the movie. I know I said I wouldn't, or couldn't, view this picture, but I forgot to take this out of my online movie queue and ended up watching it anyway. I'm glad I did. I still didn't care for the romantic angle, and I'm still not much of a Kidman or Law fan, but imagine my surprise when I came away from "Cold Mountain" with much admiration in my heart. Why? Three reasons. One, Zellweger hits a homerun as the spunky Ruby. She's a real hoot and steals every scene she's in. Two, the battle sequence involving Inman and his compatriots took my breath away. I can't remember the last time I saw such a gritty, harrowing portrayal of warfare. It's dark, bloody, grim, and deeply disconcerting. There's even a scene where an explosion literally blows a man's clothing off his body! Now that's realism, folks. The battle sequence alone would merit five stars. The last reason is the movie's depiction of agrarian America. For most of our history, our country was an agricultural nation. "Cold Mountain" really captures this America, and does so with a great eye for detail.
For those three reasons, I'm giving "Cold Mountain" five stars. Minghella's picture really is an epic journey through a dark time in American history, and such an epic deserves an equally epic DVD treatment. The two-disc set I watched contained an informative (read: worth listening to) commentary track with Minghella and editor Walter Murch, mucho deleted scenes, and several lengthy featurettes. "Climbing Cold Mountain" takes us behind the scenes to show us every aspect of the film's production. "A Journey to Cold Mountain" comes across as one of those promotional features Hollywood uses to sell a film. "Words and Music of Cold Mountain" is a concert featuring some familiar faces performing the film's score and reading sections from Cold Mountain the novel. A few storyboards, trailers, and a four minute featurette called "Sacred Harp History" round out the set. "Cold Mountain" is a winner, an excellent film that stays with you long after you watch it. Highly recommended.
"Clouds, clouds, and then sun.".......2007-05-31
Cold Mountain is a sweeping and gorgeous love story between Inman and Ada played by Jude Law and Nicole Kidman. They meet in Cold Mountain, North Carolina. Inman has enlisted in the Civil War but in the meantime he has fallen in love with Ada. They share a passionate kiss before he is shipped off but their new love is so intense, neither of them can forget about each other. Inman is gone for 4 years and Ada waits and waits for his safe return. Ada needs help on her farm so guess who shows up stealing every scene, Renee Zellweger plays the spunky and stubborn Ruby Thewes. Zellweger won a Best Supporting Oscar for her fearless portrayal of Ruby. As the film steers ahead, you see through the eyes of Inman how desperately he wants to return home to Ada but will their reuninon be happily ever after... you'll have to watch and see for yourself. Enjoy!
excellent movie.......2007-04-20
I rarely do this but this great film has moved me so much that I feel I want to spread the word...this film is truly amazing in every sense of the word..the acting, the historical story, the cinematography is such that I felt like I was actually there, and most especially the actors particularly Renee Zelwegger and Jude Law were simply superb...this is my second time to watch Jude Law in a film (after loving the Holiday I chose COld Mountain)and I can really say that he is one of the finest young actors that we have today...his extraordinary range is unbelievable and looking at all the films that he has done in his still young age of 34, I can see that he will really be acclaimed as one of the best actors of our time...his perfromance in Cold Mountain was almost like he was doing Shakespeare and with his matching physical beauty, it nearly gave me chills....kudos to the director too and I am just waiting for the next Mingella movie Breaking and Entering to come out in dvd...I heard its simply awesome and stars Jude Law and Ju;liet Binoche....
C Mountain is one movie that I will cherish and will be watching again and again....
THis movie stank!!.......2007-03-31
It should be rated X in the first place. It was like walking in slow motion. The ending was just not great. I hated this movie. Who wants to see people eat rotting cows and then be thrown into an orgy?
Beautifully told romance.Charecters come to life........2007-03-17
I really enjoyed the movie Cold Mountain, I often watch it again. This movie to me is one of the few movies that you can really lose yourself in. The charecters really come alive and you find yourself caring about them. The scenery is really beautiful and the old time american folk music is great too.The film does have some nudity and violent scenes so its not for younger viewers. Overall a beautiful film with a moving story about a time when America was much younger.

I have the standard one of the movie and watch it all the time. I highly recommend this to Final Fantasy or just FFVII fans or those who like action movies...though I highly recommend playing the game first so you know what's going on or read about the events of the game.

The futile yet inspiring stand of 300 Greek soldiers against the hugest army ever assembled in the ancient world inspired this typical example of Hollywood epic movie-making. King Leonidas of Sparta (Richard Egan, Demetrius and the Gladiators), prevented by political squabbling from sending his entire army to defend the narrow pass of Thermopylae, sets out with his personal bodyguard to fight off the ambitious Persian king, Xerxes. Along the way are a pair of young lovers, scantily clad dancing girls, and treachery though a secret mountain path. The 300 Spartans, made in 1961, has an overstated cold war subtext--there's much talk of freedom vs. slavery--and there are a few too many shots of armored men marching through the Greek countryside, but the historical conflict has a fundamentally stirring quality. Also featuring Sir Ralph Richardson (Dr. Zhivago, Dragonslayer) as a wily Athenian politician. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
A good, but not great epic.......2007-06-24
I've watched this DVD 3 or 4 times, which I wouldn't have done if I didn't like it.
It's in between an A and B movie - Cinemasope, color and location shooting are the "A" part, mid-level actors and budget are limiting factors. The love story is a bit of a tack on, but it is handled reasonably well.
Notably, this is a fairly accurate account of the battle and the events that led up to it. The Greeks did ultimately defeat the Persians under Xerxes, and this was a key event in western history.
I actually like that that movie did not have a blockbuster budget, the battle has to be shown on a small scale, making it more personal. Note the final scene, which is historically accurate. If you are an American, you might remember the Alamo.
Well worth it if you like this this sort of movie. For the more casual viewer, try "Cleopatra", (Elizabeth Taylor, ca. 1963), or "Spartacus", also ca. 1963.
Do not confuse this with the ordinary "sword and toga" B Movies hollywood churned out in the late 1950's and early '60's.
Spartan portrayal of Spartans.......2007-06-02
The writers and producers of The 300 Spartans had their hearts in the right place when they set about to make this film in the swords and sandals era. They included many "facts" (history back then was as much an art form as a journalistic one) of the event and filmed on location. Overall, however, it reeks of limited budget. Film stock was not the best. The typical we-must-use-an-American-lead-and-all-other-Greeks-must-have-British-accents casting is the greatest weakness. But for those who can't be bothered picking up a history book or using their imaginations, this flick comes closer to the truth than the very stylized '300' of Frank Miller. That film is an exercise in pure, over-the-top entertainment that cares not a whit that the battle had no giants, rhinos, or African elephants (from Persia?). Better casting, more Tarentinoesque gore, and more of the bravado of the most macho battalion of soldiers the world has ever seen would have pushed this film to four stars in my estimation. If you're a reader and love ancient warfare, seek out my novel To Move the World.
300 spartans.......2007-05-19
i bought this movie to compare with the 300. not even in the same universe. this is so poorly acted and directed that its awonder anyone would put their names on it. the story of the spartans at Thermopylae is so big and compelling you wouldnt think a director and actors could make it so small and comical.
The 300 Spartans.......2007-05-14
This was a great movie to preview in conjunction with the current 300 movie. It showed the tremendous technoloy differences from the 1960's to the present time.
Good to OK.......2007-05-13
Good plot/history detail, bad combat action sequences. The SCA could have done much better in this film than Hollywood. 300 the movie is better.

Both epic and intimate, A Very Long Engagement reunites Audrey Tautou and Jean-Pierre Jeunet, the star and director of the hugely popular Amelie. A young woman named Mathilde (Tautou, Happenstance)separated from her lover by World War I refuses to believe he's been killed and launches an investigation into his fate--an investigation that spins in all directions, creating dozens of miniature stories (including that of an Italian prostitute avenging the death of her own lover by elaborate means) that shift to and fro in time. The dazzling curlicues of narrative put brutality and tenderness back to back, shifting between crushing inevitabilities and miraculous rescues with deft storytelling skill and the lush visual style of the director of Delicatessen and The City of Lost Children. Through it all, Tautou--fierce and luminous--anchors the movie effortlessly. She's among the most emotionally engaging actresses in cinema, with the kind of expressive beauty that transcends language. A gorgeous, far-reaching film; the huge cast also includes Jodie Foster (The Silence of the Lambs), Gaspard Ulliel (Strayed), and Dominique Pinon (Alien: Resurrection). --Bret Fetzer
Description
The film is set in France near the end of World War I in the deadly trenches of the Somme, in the gilded Parisien halls of power, and in the modest home of an indomitable provincial girl. It tells the story of this young woman's relentless, moving and sometimes comic search for her fiancC)e, who has disappeared. He is one of five French soldiers believed to have been court-martialed under mysterious circumstances and pushed out of an allied trench into an almost-certain death in no-man's land. What follows is an investigation into the arbitrary nature of secrecy, the absurdity of war, and the enduring passion, intuition and tenacity of the human heart.

An Unforgettable Movie.......2007-06-18
This is one of my favorite movies. It's the kind of movie that you remember when you wake up in the morning and never forget it.
Amazingly Rich Story.......2007-06-08
It's no secret to those who know me that I'm a fan of Jean-Pierre Jeunet's directorial work. But to be honest I did not think he could outdo himself after Le Fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain.
I was wrong.
This is a story with love, loss, drama, misery, and joy so profound it cannot be expressed in mere words. It's a war move, chick-flick, murder mystery, and comedy all rolled into one. And though this sounds like a real mash-up it works... beautifully.
This is a story with many arcs, multiple perspectives, and varied interesting characters. Even the production notes are surprising. The "wooden hand" for instance (you'll know when you see it) is a real functioning work; not CGI.
Bruno Delbonnel's, who also filmed Amelie, cinematography continues to amaze. He stands head and shoulders above virtually all others. Delbonnel continues to produce the longest most difficult continuous shots I've ever seen; some of which you'd swear are impossible.
What many may not know about this film is that Jeunet accepted funds from both the National French film bureau (Commission Nationale du FILM FRANCE) and Warner Brothers. This angered some French who claimed the acceptance of foreign funds invalided it as a true French film.
I disagree. Despite the heavy financing from Warner Brothers this is Jeunet's vision and it's 100% French.
The appearance of Jodie Foster was a major surprise. In fact, not only did she speak her own lines, Jeunet claims her French was flawless. It was a nice meaty part for a cameo too.
Amazingly Jeunet seems to be able to surpass his best with each new work.
Jeunet has managed to make a film that stands up to repeated viewings. There always seems to be something new to see.
Outstanding Tale Of Hope And Love Amidst War And Tragedy.......2007-05-29
"A Very Long Engagement" is a powerful epic of love and hope set against the backdrop of brutal all-out war and its bitter aftermath. Audrey Tatou (of "Amelie" fame) plays Mathilde, a physically handicapped young woman in France during the World War I era. When the war is over and her lover fails to return home, and is reported dead, Ame... er, Mathilde (I'll always think of Audrey as Amelie) refuses to believe it and sets out on a determined quest to learn of the whereabouts of the man she believes in her heart Must still be alive. In the quest, she uncovers the stories of a number of other soldiers during the war, and comes in contact with another 'searcher', who's tracking down the whereabouts of high-ranking military officers, for a very different reason. With plentiful flashbacks to the bloody trench warfare, and flashbacks further back showing the evolution of the relationship between Mathilde and her beau Manech, beginning with their initial meeting as children. Full of love, tragedy, compassion, brutality, and humor, and enhanced by a great cast and vivid cinematography, "A Very Long Engagement" is a masterpiece synthesis of the war movie and the romance movie.
A Very Long Engagement.......2007-04-12
Excellent. Even though I am a Gaspard Ulliel fan and he does not appear in the movie for more than half an hour of the whole movie, the movie is nevertheless excellent. Audrey Tautou is amazing as usual and the script is interesting and keeps you guessing until the end.
Great movie.......2007-03-09
Loved it. A wonderful blend of war, romance, The story of one woman's cdetermination to find her lover who was declared dead. Would recommend it highly to anyone who enjoys French films and their delightful sense of humor.

Sometimes grace and hope come in surprising packages. The title character of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, a would-be glam-rock star from East Germany, undergoes a botched gender-change operation in order to escape from the Soviet bloc, only to watch the Berlin Wall come down on TV after being abandoned in a trailer park in middle America. Hedwig gets involved with Tommy, an adolescent boy who steals her songs and becomes a stadium-filling musical act. Suffering from a broken heart and a lust for revenge, Hedwig follows Tommy's tour, playing with her band (the Angry Inch) at tacky theme restaurants. Into this simple storyline, writer-director-star John Cameron Mitchell packs an astonishing mix of sadness, yearning, humor, and kick-ass songs with a little Platonic philosophy tucked inside for good measure. A visually dazzling gem of a movie. --Bret Fetzer
Customer Reviews:
I Love Hedwig.......2007-06-27
Having seen this film in the theatre twice, I don't know what took me so long to buy the DVD - I enjoy it every time I watch it! It has great heart and empathy and the music is fantastic! John Cameron Mitchell is enchanting as well as the whole cast. It is absurd, outrageous and yes, lovingly done. I especially liked Michael Pitt - he is one of my favorite actors - puts his whole being into every character he portrays.
Compelling Music that moves you!.......2007-05-07
a great movie , if you enjoy a good musical DEFINATELY take a second look at this film!
weirdWildness.......2007-04-11
My daughters bought this film and both enjoyed it for its weirdwildness. I can't say that I did, but it's a generational thing I guess. They especially liked the music, but again I can't say that I did although I'm a musician myself. Clearly inventive movie making and excellent musicians doing exactly what they want to do, but... I guess it's a generational thing. I don't particularly like Andy Warhol's flicks, or Broadway musicals, or Wagnerian opera, or John Coltrane, Philip Glass, or Modest Mouse indy music either. What's an old classical guitarist to do when the Bach D-minor partita is pulled off the music stand and the cross-dressers appear? The topics are not quite my style, although emotionality is the same across the entire human race. Inventive, wild, weird, very well done, but not my style.
Dr. Dude
An Inch Just Ain't Enough.......2007-03-30
Hedwig Robinson (John Cameron Mitchell) is a rocker. And she's got The Angry Inch beside her (and in her pants). As a young man, Hansel/Hedwig lived in East Berlin, right before The Wall came tumbling down. His sexual identity was always in question and when a cute, black, American soldier gives him a way out of the Eastern Bloc, Hedwig jumps on him (literally and figuratively). But he can't get to the other side of The Wall as a man, so an operation takes place to remove his vital functions below the waist ...if you get my meaning. Needless to say (if you pay attention to the title of the film), the surgery gets botched and leaves Hedwig with his "Angry Inch."
The anger is twofold. First is the failed operation; second is Hedwig's fury over stolen musical material by someone named Tommy Gnosis (Michael Pitt). Tommy is a rock-n-roll sensation, but it's all because of what Hedwig taught him in his early days. So Hedwig, in true b!tchy fashion, follows Tommy's rock tour around the world. But instead of playing in theaters and high end places, Hedwig and his Angry Inch band play at lowbrow restaurants, often to the dismay of its patrons who've simply come in to eat.
Hedwig's decline into obscurity is well played by director/actor John Cameron Mitchell. The musical soundtrack is very well done and the catchy tunes will have most movie watchers tapping their toes along to the rockin' beats. That he also remains angry at some of his band members is quite funny, actually holding them hostage by keeping their passports hidden away.
Revenge is the meal of the day as Hedwig finally meets up with Tommy again, eventually leading to Tommy's career demise and launching Hedwig into the spotlight. But is this what Hedwig really wanted? Not realizing the sacrifices she'd have to make, Hedwig decides to re-open her/his closet and show the world his/her true identity. He also sets free one of his band members who turns out to be a woman masquerading as a man, too.
Those willing to watch a film without sitting in judgement of the material will most likely eat this story up. It's quite funny, well acted, and has a rippingly good soundtrack. But if you're a staunch conservative or -- god forbid -- homophobic, you might want to pass on this one.
Mind-Altering Viewpoint.......2007-03-24
First time I watched this movie I was kinda confused, but felt like I'd just been run over by a truck. Still, I came back a second time, and a third, and a fourth...
And each time it amazes me. The meaning behind this movie and the idea of what makes someone happy might not end up completing them in the long run. *sigh* How many people can this touch before it becomes a cult classic?
Oh wait, It already is! :)

It's tempting to call this harrowing picture a World War II version of All Quiet on the Western Front: both films take the perspective of ordinary German soldiers at ground level. Stalingrad surveys the misery of the battle of Stalingrad, the winter siege that cost the lives of almost one and a half million people, Russian defenders and German invaders alike. Not unlike Spielberg's approach to Saving Private Ryan, German director Joseph Vilsmaier rarely steps outside the action to comment on the higher purpose of the war, assuming the audience is aware of the evil of the Nazi regime. Instead, we simply follow a group of soldiers as they endure a series of gut-wrenching episodes, events which have the tang of authenticity and horror. Vilsmaier has a taste for symbolism and surreal touches, which only add to the unsettling sense of insanity this movie conjures up so well. --Robert Horton
Customer Reviews:
Russia in the cold.......2007-05-13
Life and death on the russian front. So few returned on either side.
A well produced and well acted epic.......2007-02-06
It is always a satifying experience to view a film in which none of the actors are familiar and be absolutely floored at their performances. Watching Stalingrad in German with English subtitles provides such an experience.
The battle of Stalingrad was a disaster for the German army and was instrumental in their ultimate defeat. A part of the European war that has not been featured in American films, the Russian front was brutal in terms of both the combat attrocities and the elements. This film captures a group of German soldiers who are thrust into these circumstances and spares the viewer nothing in recording the horrors of war.
It is not sympathetic to the German side and doesn't have any hint of nationalism or patriotism- it just lays out the story as factually as possible.
Indispensible viewing for history and WWII buffs. Right up there with Saving Private Ryan as the most realistic of WWII films.
Stalingrad.......2007-01-14
This was a very poor film of the seige of Stalingrad. The acting, plot, English dubbing and flow of the movie was of poor quality. Although it tried to show the suffering of both the Germans and Russians during seige of Stalingrad, the acting and characters in the movie were not interestng enough to hold your attention. Far below the overall quality of the other DVD I purchased at the same time, "Enemy at the Gates"
Impacting.......2007-01-09
Germany's war films are always very real and factual, they don't doll them up with grandeur and Rambo-type scenarios. They never give a false illusion of what it was like to be a German soldier in World War 2, the hopelessness in the end, the devastation of being in war you didn't want to be in that went on forever and knowing all along your chances of survival were very slim. (I have read a collection of letters of German soldiers from the front and those men were so very tired of war and just wanted to see home again.)
This film impacts all that real desperation felt by those men on the front lines. It's completely unbelievable how their officials in the end treated their own soldiers. How many of them were left to starved or freeze to death in Russia, completely abandoned by their own country on a frozen terrain.
Stats are given in the end of how many German soldiers surrendered in World War 2, to how many were actually taken prisoner (1/3 survived surrendering) to how many returned home after being taken prisoner and put in Prisoner of War Camps (15%) It makes you realize how hopeless their situation was and this film impacts that emotion in every sense.
My only complaint is that the subtitles went by a bit fast at times.
what a cruel and senseless war.............2007-01-05
it's the decisions by the leaders of the nations to declare and start a war. but their decisions are always made in their presidential offices, behind their desks. it's the foot soldiers to carry out their blundering decisions with blood and death. war is always senseless, bad for the soldiers but good for the officers and the generals. war and battle are the two great opportunities for them to get promoted. the foot soldiers would only be awarded with some worthless mass produced metal medals decorated with colored ribbons and paint, glorified with sounds-great big names: purple heart, silver star, iron cross...whatever. they are all the same, a worthless piece of metal.
the battle of stalingrad was one of the most horrible tragedies in our human history. to those soldiers who died in the bitterest russian cold winter, the only blessing is what the two german soldiers said before frozen to death: 'to die in bitter coldness is good, because you don't feel anything...better than dying in the desert, because it's too hot and you can't stop sweating....the only thing good to die in the desert is....those stars look so close....'
what a sad war story....

A GI (Gene Kelly) stays in Paris after the war to become an artist, and has to choose between the patronage of a rich American woman (Nina Foch) and a French gamine (Leslie Caron) engaged to an older man. The plot is mostly an excuse for director Vincente Minnelli to pool his own extraordinary talent with those of choreographer-dancer-actor Kelly and the artists behind the screenplay, art direction, cinematography, and score, creating a rapturous musical not quite like anything else in cinema. The final section of the film comprises a 17-minute dance sequence that took a month to film and is breathtaking. Songs include "'S Wonderful," "I Got Rhythm," and "Love Is Here to Stay." --Tom Keogh
Customer Reviews:
Not as good as "Singin' in the Rain".......2007-05-25
Okay, I know I'm in the minority and this is supposed to be an amazing classic musical that everyone loves, but it didn't really grab me. Here's my situation: my daughter takes tap-dancing lessons and loves them, so I picked up "Singin' in the Rain" on DVD because I thought she might enjoy it. Well, both of us LOVED that movie! Entertaining, funny story, colorful memorable characters, and absolutely breathtaking tap dance numbers.
Since we loved "Singin' in the Rain," I ordered a ton of other Gene Kelly musicals. The first one we watched was "An American in Paris," and honestly, we were disappointed. The story wasn't nearly as good, the characters weren't as likable. Yeah, there's the big ballet in the end, but I'm not into ballet and I don't like overlong numbers like that (in "Singin' in the Rain," I wasn't into "Broadway Melody" either). There are a couple of tap dance numbers in this that were mildly entertaining (Kelly dancing in a funny way to entertain the French kids was cute), but nothing as exuberant and jaw-droppingly amazing as "Moses Supposes" or Donald O'Connor's "Make 'em Laugh", both of which I could watch endlessly.
So speaking totally as a layman who knows nothing about musicals, I can say that personally, I adored "Singin' in the Rain," but didn't enjoy "An American in Paris" nearly as much. (Next up we're going to check out "On the Town," "Les Girls," "Summer Stock" and "Brigadoon.")
