The Thin Red Line (1998)
In recluse director Terrence Malick's 1998 comeback vehicle, the battle for Guadalcanal Island offers an opportunity to explore nothing less than the nature of life, death, God, and courage. Let that be a warning to anyone expecting a conventional war flick; Malick proves himself quite capable of mounting an exciting action sequence, but he's just as likely to meander into pure philosophical noodling. This is not especially an actors' movie, but the standouts are bold: Nick Nolte as a career-minded colonel, Elias Koteas as a deeply spiritual captain who tries to protect his men, Ben Chaplin as a G.I. haunted by lyrical memories of his wife. The backbone of the film is the ongoing discussion between a wry sergeant (Sean Penn) and an ethereal, almost holy private (newcomer Jim Caviezel). In some ways The Thin Red Line seems vaguely, intriguingly incomplete, yet it casts a spell like almost nothing else of its time, and Malick's visionary images are a challenge and a signpost to the rest of his filmmaking generation. --Robert Horton

Tora! Tora! Tora!
"Sir, there's a large formation of planes coming in from the north, 140 miles, 3 degrees east." "Yeah? Don't worry about it." This is just one of the many mishaps chronicled in Tora! Tora! Tora! The epic film shows the bombing of Pearl Harbor from both sides in the historic first American-Japanese coproduction: American director Richard Fleischer oversaw the complicated production, wrestling a sprawling story with dozens of characters into a manageable, fairly easy-to-follow film. While Tora! Tora! Tora! lacks the strong central characters that anchor the best war movies, the real star of the film is the climactic 30-minute battle, a massive feat of cinematic engineering that expertly conveys the surprise, the chaos, and the immense destruction of the attack. --Sean Axmaker

Patton
One of the greatest screen biographies ever produced, this monumental film runs nearly three hours, won seven Academy Awards, and gave George C. Scott the greatest role of his career. Scott embodies his role so fully, so convincingly, that we can't help but be drawn to and fascinated by Patton as a man who is simultaneously bound for hell and glory. Filmed on an epic scale at literally dozens of European locations, Patton does not embrace war as a noble pursuit, nor does it deny the reality of war as a breeding ground for heroes. Through the awesome achievement of Scott's performance and the film's grand ambition, Patton shows all the complexities of a man who accepted his role in life and (like Scott) played it to the hilt. --Jeff Shannon

The Longest Day
The Longest Day is Hollywood's definitive D-day movie. More modern accounts such as Saving Private Ryan are more vividly realistic, but producer Darryl F. Zanuck's epic 1962 account is the only one to attempt the daunting task of covering that fateful day from all perspectives. From the German high command and front-line officers to the French Resistance and all the key Allied participants, the screenplay by Cornelius Ryan, based on his own authoritative book, is as factually accurate as possible. The endless parade of stars (John Wayne, Henry Fonda, Robert Mitchum, Sean Connery, and Richard Burton, to name a few) makes for an uneasy mix of verisimilitude and Hollywood star-power, however, and the film falls a little flat for too much of its three-hour running time. But the set-piece battles are still spectacular, and if the landings on Omaha Beach lack the graphic gore of Private Ryan, they nonetheless show the sheer scale and audacity of the invasion. --Mark Walker

4 out of 5 stars Good Collection.......2007-06-15

Some of these may have been available before now, but none in a WWII set that includes shorts and cartoons from the period. Pick any two you like and they are worth the price. "Command Decision" with Clark Gable as General Casey, a serious officer commanding a bomber group in England, is wonderfully realistic. "Thirty Seconds Over Tokyo" with Spencer Tracy as Jimmy Doolittle leading the first bomb raid on Japan is excellent. The others are just bonus as far as I'm concerned and a very good one at that. "The Hill" is a good military prisoner movie with Sean Connery as a prisoner. "36 Hours" with James Garner is good espionage movie. Air Force is resonably decent account of a B-17 crew that witnessed Pearl Harbor starring John Ridgely. "Hell to Eternity" with Jeffrey Hunter and David Janssen is about Hispanic boy raised by Japanese-Americans and fought for United States. Fans of WWII movies should enjoy the set. I recommend it. Especially for a Fathers Day gift.

5 out of 5 stars dvd availability.......2007-03-24

I'm not sure about THE HILL, but the other 5 titles in this collection have NOT been on DVD--at least legitimiate disk. AIR FORCE, THIRTY SECONDS OVER TOKYO, and COMMAND DECISION are all wonderful war or combat films (there's a difference between the two--see the books on the genre by Mike Mayo, Thomas Doherty and Jeanine Basinger). It's great that other classics such as THE PURPLE HEART and even the less stellar SO PROUDLY WE HAIL are finally being released this spring on DVD. Collectors and film historians should appreciate all of these titles that really reflected the country's mood between l94l and l945. Propaganda was such a vital component on the home front and these movies show us the nationalistic side of the American people at the time.

5 out of 5 stars great collection.......2007-03-13

I disagree totally with the above reviewer. These films are excellent. The only one I am not thrilled with is The Hill, all the others are very good WWII films. I have been waiting for Command Decision for a long time. This collection will not disappoint.

2 out of 5 stars Sub-standard WWII Collection.......2007-03-12

Of the 6 films, 3 are old films made in the '40 (Air Force; Command Decision; 30 Seconds Over Tokyo) and widely available in dvds for sometime.

Hell to Eternity is an obscure war film. 36 Hours is more fitting for espionage catagory. The Hill, which is probably the most powerful film among the 6, is a prison film.

A carefully selected Sidney Lumet Collection is highly anticipated.

Description

The Battle of the Bulge: Nazi Panzer forces stage a last-ditch Belgian front offensive that could turn the tide of WWII. Henry Fonda, Robert Shaw and Robert Ryan in the spectacular recreation of a crucial campaign.

Battleground: Van Johnson, Ricardo Montalban and George Murphy star in this remarkable war film, nominated for six Oscars(R) (including Best Picture) about courageous American G.I.s caught up in the battle at Bastogne.

The Big Red One Special Edition: "The real glory of war," Samuel Fuller said, "is surviving." A decorated combatant with the famed U.S. First Infantry in WWII, Fuller survived. His 1980 film version of his war experiences did not...until now. Working with 70,000 feet of vault materials and Fuller's shooting script, critic/filmmaker Richard Schickel heads a reconstruction that adds over 40 minutes and transforms a truncated but admired war film into an epic masterwork. Lee Marvin, in a richly layered performance now revealed as one of his finest, stars as the sergeant of peach-fuzzed riflemen fighting from North Africa to Normandy and across Europe. The film is the squad's combat diary, war as it's fought and sweated and bled, and, maybe, survived.

The Dirty Dozen: Twelve jailbirds will earn their freedom...if they survive a suicide mission against the Nazi brass. Tough-as-nails Lee Marvin leads a nothing-to-lose convict squad of Charles Bronson, Jim Brown, John Cassavetes, Trini Lopez, Telly Savalas, Donald Sutherland, Clint Walker and more in the all-time action trendsetter. Where Eagles

Dare: The mission is clear. Get in. Get the general. Get out. Commandos charged with freeing a U.S. general from an Alpine fortress should also be told to trust nothing - including the search-and-rescue orders just issued. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood go Where Eagles Dare in this twisty World War II thriller written by action master Alistair MacLean (The Guns of Navarone, Ice Station Zebra) and directed by Brian G. Hutton (Kelly's Heroes). Known for fiery dramatic roles, Burton ventures into the realm of movie pyrotechnics with dynamic efficiency. And Eastwood's cool-fire presence heightens one searing action sequence after another. The film became Eastwood's then-largest hit and its studio's #1 moneymaker of the year.

5 out of 5 stars WWII Collection Battle Front Europe.......2007-05-18

5 of my favorite WWII movies in one package. Super!

4 out of 5 stars War Movies.......2006-11-11

Three of this collection are movies I have wanted for many years, and to get them in one collection is my reason for acquiring the set. Battleground is the story of a small group of doughboys stuck in the Argonne, basically surrounded by Germans, and their fight for survival. Where Eagles Dare is about a group of highly trained soldiers trying to destroy a fortress in the Alps controlled by the Germans; however, a mole and high ranking officer overseeing the operation want the group to fail. The Dirty Dozen is a war classic about criminals given a respite to carry out a basically suicide mission against a host of high ranking German officers

5 out of 5 stars GREAT ADVENTURE .......2006-08-04

I have watched a lot of WWII DVDs and found that these movies while hollywoodized to an extent are pretty accurate. These movies will entertain you completely!!! This is a great group of war films and I enjoyed each and every one of them thouroughly!!! Cant beat the price either!!

5 out of 5 stars Thrilling War Films.......2006-07-26

I recently purchased this DVD European War collection and I'm enjoying these wonderful war films at a price that's so affordable it must be seen to believe. This World War II DVD Collection-European Warfare includes 5 outstanding War epics that were received by the movie-going public as fascinating with a great story line and many action-packed scenes that most critics moved to give these films a thumbs up. It's difficult to point out which film ranks the best. You can choose any 5 exciting war epics, my favorites "The Dirty Dozen" and "Where Eagles Dare" were given 3-1/2 - 4 Stars. The picture transfer on all 5 are crisp and clear and the sound is remarkably full-bodied stereo. Five stars for a great collection of War films that can be watched over and over again.

    FIRST THOUGHTS: 4 EXCELLENT WAR FILMS ON DVD THEMATICALLY COMBINED INTO 1 SET

    This set came to me as a gift from one of my sons about 4 years ago. He found it at Sam's Club and he paid about 30 dollars. Each one of the films included are films I really wanted so the set has been a 'reel' treat for me.

    IN A NUTSHELL: SAVE $17. ON THIS SET VERSUS PURCHASING INDIVIDUAL TITLES FROM AMAZON

    Within a nice outer slipcase you get 4 classic DVDs in their normal DVD packaging and wrappers. These are all releases that you can purchase seperately, but it is a little less costly to get the set. 'Patton' is a 2-DISK set that sells for $14.98 from Amazon, 'Tora Tora Tora' is $12.98, 'The Longest Day' is an edition no longer available directly from Amazon, but several Amazon sellers are offering it New from $15.98, and 'The Thin Red Line' is $9.19 directly from Amazon. It comes to over $53. plus shipping [depending on whether you get all the titles from Amazon or from vendors]. If you buy this set the shipping is free [over $25.] In essence, one can save $17. [as of today] buying this set rather than buying the individual titles, which is significant as these are not promotional DVDs and do in fact have all the 'special features' available on the individual titles.

    ***** THE TITLES *****

    * 'THE LONGEST DAY'
    * 'PATTON'
    * 'THE THIN RED LINE'
    * 'TORA TORA TORA'

    4 out of 5 stars Good package of war movies.......2005-07-20

    The Longest Day is one of the best war movies ever made. And Tora 3 is a much better depiction of the attack on Pearl Harbor than that stupid Ben Affleck movie.

    The Thin Red Line can be a tough one to accept. I had to watch it a few times before I liked it.

    3 out of 5 stars Three Magnificent War Movies but One Appalling Fantasy.......2004-02-11

    It is up to the viewer to decide what is fact and what is fiction or what is utter and complete fantasy. But in my Opinion, The Longest Day, Patton and Tora Tora Tora are renowned war movies, 'The Thin Red Line' is not.

    Maintaining a very slow pace throughout its three and half hours lenght, in the 'Thin Red Line' more Japanese soldiers are shown surrendering in the few hours of combat depicted than actually did the first three years of the Pacific war! (If you do not believe me, look up Tarawa, New Guinea, Marshall Islands, and Iwo Jima for example.) And of course the Americans are shown almost to last as the inhuman beasts and the Japanese as noble Samurai.

    Following in the tradition of the racist epic 'Birth to a Nation', movies like the Thin Red Line and Pearl Harbor are rewriting ouf history. For example, in Pearl Harbor the Japanese are depicted as being justified in attacking, when actually the United States stopped selling the Japanese oil because they were allies with Hitler, making war on China, and had just invaded French Indochina.

    5 out of 5 stars I'll tell you why..........2004-02-08

    To answer another reviewer's question: Why would you buy this set when you can get the individual films cheaper? You can't buy the individual films cheaper.

    The version of "Patton" in this set is the 2-disc Special Edition, which is out of print except for in this set, and selling for more than the price of this entire set on auction sites.

    So save some money, get the 2-disc version of Patton, and get three other great WWII films for free (essentially).

    1 out of 5 stars Two bad movies for the price of five.......2002-12-13

    Let's face it...the Thin Red Line is the most boring war movie ever made. Tora Tora Tora is very outdated, and although it does show the attack upon Pearl Harbor from the Japanese perspective, it is very much outclassed by the newer movie, "Pearl Harbor,"

        Product Description

        This is a collection of two fascinating and very graphic films that were created by soldiers on the ground towards the end of World War II as they liberated concentration camps. The footage - detailed below - is quite graphic in some parts. The first film is titled Nazi Concentration Camps (1945) - Run time: 51:56 Audio/Visual: sound, Black & White - Compilation footage of Nazi concentration camps in the immediate aftermath of World War II. The footage was gathered by the US Department of Defense as part of the effort to conduct war crimes trials. This film shows actual scenes of concentration camp victims and is quite graphic in some places. Some examples of the footage in this very explicit segment include: At Leipsig Concentration Camp, there are piles of dead bodies, and many living Russian, Czechoslovakian, Polish and French prisoners. At Penig Concentration Camp, Hungarian women and others display wounds. Doctors treat patients and U.S. Red Cross workers move them to German Air Force hospital where their former captors are forced to care for them. At Breendonck Concentration Camp, Belgium, methods of torture are demonstrated. At Harlan Concentration Camp near Hannover, U.S. Red Cross aides Polish survivors. At Buchenwald Concentration Camp, Army trucks arrive with aid for survivors. Piles of dead, mutilated and emaciated bodies. Some survivors among dead. Huge ovens and piles of bone ash on floor of crematorium. The second film is titled Nazi Murder Mills, 1945/04/26 (1945) - Run time: 8:15 Audio/Visual: sound, Black & White - This is the first actual newsreel showing pictures of atrocities in Nazi murder camps.

        3 out of 5 stars Out of their Element?.......2005-03-14

        I was looking for some of those old National Geographic nature specials when I came upon this selection of WWII DVD's. I had a lot of respect for the quality of the National Geographic specials based on what I'd seen on TV over the years. I expected the same when I ordered this set of DVD's. I have to admit that the quality of the production is very good. It's the overall content that disappointed me.

        The first DVD I watched was titled "Untold Stories of WWII". It had several sideline stories about supposedly little known developments during the war. The main subject was the Nazi Germany early-stage development towards an atomic bomb. The events primarily take place in Norway and you probably would enjoy watching the movie "Heroes of Telemark" more than this segment. There's another on the development of the other super weapons that Germany developed towards the end of the war. There's is also a segment on the Japanese mini-sub which segues into the next DVD I watched.

        The second DVD of this set that I watched was "Pearl Harbor-Legacy of Attack". This and the final DVD of the series apparently grew out of the funding that the National Geographic Society provided for a couple of undersea explorations. One was the search for a Japanese mini-sub supoosedly lost during 12/7/41 and the other was for the USS Yorktown lost after the Battle for Midway. The modern day underwater searches were a questionable aspect of the Pearl Harbor and Midway DVD's. I enoy the views of sunken ships that have become technologically possible in the last decade or so. However, they did seem to detract from the recounting of the history of the two battles. There is a lot of good original films of the two battles, good narration and outstanding reminiscences by surviving veterans.

        The Pearl Harbor DVD, I felt, was the most worthwhile of the three in the set. Frankly, I'd recommend that you save money and just buy that one. It gives a better overview of the battle than does the Midway DVD. The one on Midway seemed rather sporatic in its' narrative.

        I'm still looking for those great National Geographic nature specials that I saw when I was growing up. I'm not sure what to make of the National Geographic's journey into the realm of history. Maybe if the underwater discoveries are put on the center stage and the rest was just used as background, I might have appreciated these videos more. As it was, the two battle DVD's seemed to be trying to tell two seperate stories simultaneously and I didn't think that worked too well.

          4 out of 5 stars The best movie about World War II.......2005-03-28

          Is "Saving Private Ryan" a great WW II movie? Yes it is. Was the Battle of D-Day the greatest campaign of the war? No, it wasn't, D-Day and the period leading up to it and the campaign through France was a tremendous effort that brought men close to greatness, but it pales compared to the efforts on the Russian Front. As Lt. John Eisenhower said in a toast in Moscow, shortly after the war was over, "I propose a toast to the man responsible for winning the War... the common Russian soldier." So lay off Cyrus.

          Everyone should see "Saving Private Ryan," especially those who don't appreciate what it took to beat the Germans and the Japanese. They don't know how close we came to losing World War II and living in HELL for generations afterward. The men and women who fought in this War against the Axis powers are true heroes, whether they be Americans, Russians, British, Indians, Philippinos, or dozens of other nationalities. The hell that hundreds of thousands went through is conveyed in "Saving Private Ryan."

          "Saving Private Ryan" is more than just a combat film. The opening and ending scenes tell us that these were real people, with families, hopes and dreams. And so many of the men and women who fought the Axis never realized those dreams, for they bought freedom with their lives. Other scenes within the movie tell us that the men we are watching on the screen are more than just trained killers, but ordinary guys who just want to go home again.

          But if you want to see the greatest movie about World War II, I suggest "The Best Years of Our Lives." It won eight academy awards, but it didn't have one scene of combat as it took place immediately after the end of the War. I saw "Saving Private Ryan" once, and that is enough. I can never see "The Best Years of Our Lives" enough times. Two other truely great films about World War II are "A Walk in the Sun" and "The Man in the Grey Flannel Suit." Like "The Best Years of Our Lives," these are stories about War and how it changes men.

          5 out of 5 stars My Favorite War Movie in an Excellent Set!.......2005-03-16

          Saving Private Ryan, wow. This film REALLY grabs you in every way. It is dark, violent, and realistic to it's brutal extreme. It is also a beautiful work of art by masterful director Steven Spielberg, and the crew that made E.T., Artificial Intelligence, Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones, Schindler's List, etc...

          You must see the movie, I don't care which edition you buy, "although this set is pretty neat!"

          5 out of 5 stars CYRUS...Why does there always have to be that 10% ???.......2004-12-04

          This movie, whether it is 100% accurate or not, should be very moving to all Americans. The intent was to honor the sacrifices of our greatest generation, and give us all a glimpse of the terror those men faced. This movie was, and should be, life-changing. If it doesn't stack up to your intellectually superior standards, please just refrain from comment instead of undermining it's honorable intent...

          5 out of 5 stars Great war flick.......2004-10-20

          Saving Private Ryan set the standard for what we, the public, expect in a war flick. The combination of special effects, grusome reality, well placed action, well scripted acting. SPR doesn't shouldn't be mistaken, as others have suggested, as to what war is really like, but to let you see through the memories of what war veterans look back upon. The comradery, the loss of friends, the carnage and brutality of war. This isn't for the tea-sippin' sissy college student who think they have the answer to life but yet to get one, so, in other words, this isn't for a person who likes "the thin red line". If you want anti-war and anti-patriotic flicks, see "All's Quiet on the Western Front" Saving Private Ryan is successful at showing us what AMERICANS had to go through during the Normandy campaign. Not British, Russian, or cheese-eating frenchies, but AMERICAN. We made this movie, CYRUS, so if you want to see a movie about the russians in WWII, why don't you ask them to make one. Hollywood is in America, they make movies for AMERICANS, because we want them and will pay alot of money to see them.

          3 out of 5 stars good movie, not perfect.......2004-07-16

          Private ryan was a decent war flick, but was it the best? I wouldn't go that far. It was bloody and all, but it didn't have very good writing. Tom hanks is also overrated in this movie. This film doesn't compare to movies like "das boot", "the thin red line", or "cross of iron". The reviewer down below should take a chill pill, you don't prove your case by using tons of exclamation points and by calling people names. We all have opinions, and they should be respected.
