Living in Atlanta for over 12 years and owning all of Tyler Perry's films, this is one of the best! A must see and to own! Highly recommend...He is one of the best...he was definitely missed in the movie; however his writing was defintely there in the story line!

Something to show my grands and godchildren for a change. Whole familly loved this movie. Great!!!! Tyler Perry we love you.

4 out of 5 stars Recommended to all people of all races.......2007-06-21

Perry's theatrical experience comes in to play throughout the picture and I like it. He doesn't get into drag and play Madea in this movie -- in fact, he doesn't appear onscreen at all (unless he had an unaccredited cameo where I didn't recognize him). The final product remains representative of the writer/director/producer's abilities and his common themes of the power of family and how much a community can accomplish when they band together. "Daddy's Little Girls" has its funny moments, but overall it's fairly somber from the start.

The movie's opening scene is a montage of people of different ages on a city street, with children playing and men cooking dinner on the grill and women chit-chatting, showing the good aspects of a close-knit neighborhood. Later in the film, Willie stands up in a community meeting with police and politicians and tells his neighbors that the police and government have never and will never do anything to help them, and they all have to band together to help themselves. Perry grew up in New Orleans, and wondered if this scene was meant to reflect his feelings about the poor handling of post-Katrina rebuilding by, well, by damn near everyone except the residents themselves.

The one benefit of Julia (Gabrielle Union) and Monty's (Idris Elba) relationship is that it allows the story to branch out to wax philosophical about one more conflict: class. Julia's friends are not the kind to be amused or in favor of a relationship between a successful legal partner and a struggling auto-mechanic. The snobbery allows the movie to take on some of the all-too-frequent stereotypes that are automatically applied to black men, particularly ideas about being a "baby's daddy" or forty-year-olds in over-sized jerseys. Monty breaks all of these stereotypes as a caring, responsible adult who is still struggling through life despite those character traits. It's nice to see this kind of positive role model portrayed strongly on screen instead of reinforcing negative ideas.

Parts of "Daddy's Little Girls" may be predictable and convenient as the movie tells its tale but there's not necessarily anything wrong with that. The film is one of those ubiquitous "feel good movies" and as such it does its job well. When the final credits roll you'll feel good and maybe, through the film's attempts to challenge a few negative stereotypes, even feel a little better about the human race's ability to come together in moments of adversity. You'll laugh; probably tear a little; and most importantly feel good. Isn't that enough for a movie to provide sometimes?

This is a great movie! I am glad to have it as part of my collection.

5 out of 5 stars Oh My Goodness.......2007-06-20

I absolutely looooooooved this film! First of all, this was a perfect example of good casting. All of the charachters seemed so believable, and the chemistry between them all was great as well. This is the third time I've seen Gabriel Union play this kind of charachter (kind of stuck up and well to do) and I kind of get tired of it, but I loved her here. Especially when she was drunk and immitating Lil Jon! My favorite charachter(s) had to be the Macclain Sisters. They were GREAT! Their sassiness could almost put you off at first but when you think about it, children really do behave that way.

This was a lovely film, and I just thank God for Tyler Perry and the positive message he put's out in his movies. It doesn't have to be about Get Rich or Die Trying all the time, or shoot 'em up, bang-bang, or all this other garbage black film makers put out now. He put out a nice film where for once the black man isn't the enemy and it's a great piece of work.

5 out of 5 stars Heartwarming and a huge improvement for Tyler Perry and Company.......2007-06-21

This story of a blue collar father's fight for custody of his three daughter's from his blatantly selfish and irresponsible ex wife was excellent. Idris Elba is a woefully underrated actor from England who was perfect in this role. I have been a fan since seeing him in the dramatic film "Sometimes in April" which deals with the affect of the Rwandan genocide on two brothers who have opposing idealogies. In that film Idris was awesome as a family man with three children and a wife to protect while the world was spiraling out of control around them. If you haven't seen it, check it out Idris and the rest of the supporting cast are superb.

Here in Daddy's Little Girl's Idris once again gives a honest, heart-felt performance. The chemistry between Idris and Gabrielle Union was great and I loved the date scene at the club where they first begin to really bond. Gabrielle was so amusing playing someone who loosens up after a couple of drinks and reveals a sweet heart under the tough "corporate woman" exterior, another one of my favorite scenes is how humorous she is when she gets home from the club. There wasn't one "false note" in her performance in the film, I enjoyed her throughout.

The three girls in the movie are also biological sisters and were cast perfectly, they each have great talent and I am certain we will be seeing a lot of more of them. Lou Gossett is the headliner and his part as a mentor and friend to Idris is also a great addition to the cast.

My least favorite character is the ex-wife's lover who grossly overplayed all of his scenes.

Overall this is a feel good movie and Tyler Perry's most even-handed attempt at producing and directing. As mentioned the casting of the leading man and woman was right on point, far superior to all the other TP movies. Tyler is continuing to grow in his craft and I look forward to more family-friendly movies from him that deal with life's many challenges.

P.S. I also loved the blues song performed live at the club where Idris and Gabrielle have their first date! Too bad its not on the soundtrack...a sad oversight.

5 out of 5 stars Wish It Would've Continued.......2007-06-19

Pros: I am crazy about this movie. I saw it at the show when it first came out, and I was impressed that once again Tyler Perry has come out with a positive movie for the African American community (as well as any other community) to relate to. I'd never been a Gabrielle Union fan, but she definitely did a great job in this movie, and every single time I see her drunk act at the bar and her house, I fall out laughing. Nobody could've played the handsome man's man role that Idris Elba played. I was not familiar with him before this movie, but boy, am I a fan now. He has undeniable sex appeal. Daddy's Little Girls takes viewers on a ride through a father's life who is trying his hardest to take care of his children and maintain a decent lifestyle, even though he has a dark past and an ex-girlfriend/mother of his children from Hell. I already knew Tasha Smith was going to be a great evil mother since I consistently watch "America's Next Top Model" and I've seen her as an acting coach. The young girls were great playing sassy, intelligent kids, and it was a joy to see the people from Perry's previous plays. I thoroughly enjoyed this movie, and as soon as it came out on sale, I went flying out of the house to buy it. I'm not convinced that I'll ever get tired of seeing it.

Cons: The guys who played thugs weren't believable at all, especially the main one. He was handsome and he was cool, but nothing about him said thug to me. Even the dudes who jumped the guy who was selling something looked like they were fresh off a college campus. I know Perry wanted to keep the movie PG-13 so I'm guessing that's the reason he didn't go for more hardened characters. That or he was going for dapper thugs.

5 out of 5 stars TYLER PERRY IS A ROCKSTAR!!!.......2007-06-19

TP rocked this movie for real. It has everything, you'll laugh, cry, get frustrated, angry and cheer for Monty. A hard working man that is trying to live life on the right side of the tracks so that he can take care of his girl It is so great to see a man not only step up and take care of their children but FIGHT to keep them. Julia is a hard nosed no nonsense profession woman that learns that sometimes you have to let go and let love. (kinda seen her in this role in Deliver Us From Eva)However Gabrelle Union and Idris Elba (whom I didnt know was from London)played these roles to perfection

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Loved it.......2007-06-18

I went to see this movie when it first was released in the theaters, then picked up a copy of the movie just this past Friday, and I highly recommend the movie to folks because for one, it doesn't have no nudity or sex scenes, you can relate to what is going on, especially if you have been through a custody battle like I have, and what I love about it is the romance. You can tell that Idris and Gabrielle were feeling each other(had a mutual attraction for those who didn't get that earlier statement), and they kept it without getting into a scene and all that. i respect Tyler for that. Another thing that I took away from this was the sense of community that was there. This guy was absolutely scared to raise three girls by himself, but stepped to the plate and gave it his best shot. He made mistakes, he endured heat from others as well as those he loved, but through it all, he kept his head on and you cannot help but love Idris Elba for it.The McClain Sisters were adorable and look forward to more from them. A part of the movie I didn't care for was Tracee Ellis Ross and Terri Vaughan's roles as the judgmental, funky girlfriends who poo pooed on Julia(Gabrielle Union's role)for Monty and his life, but yet they kept hooking her up with silly, hilarious, funky trifling men. One was married to boot. I truly loved the Aquarium scene and have made a mental note to go to the Georgia Aquarium myself and admire that for myself. Very good feel good, emotional film.

The simple pleasure of watching a living car squirt oil in a villain's face just never goes away. Disney, in their effort to revitalize the Herbie franchise, has made the wise choice of not trying too hard--aside from a small bit of skateboarding action, just about every element of Herbie: Fully Loaded would fit right into the 1963 original (groovily titled The Love Bug) or its various sequels. Maggie Peyton (Lindsay Lohan, the fiery-tressed starlet of Mean Girls and Freaky Friday) wants to join her family's dynasty of race car drivers, but her father (Michael Keaton, Batman Returns) worries that she'll get hurt. Instead, as a college graduation gift, he buys her a junked-out Volkswagen Beetle--which turns out to be Herbie, a car with a mind of its own. Soon Maggie and Herbie are racing against an arrogant racing champion (Matt Dillon, Crash, There's Something About Mary) and duking it out with monster trucks, eventually hoping her father's heart will change. Herbie: Fully Loaded is formulaic fluff, but executed with cheerful enthusiasm; everyone involved has clearly embraced the mix of slapstick hijinks and light family drama. There's even a handful of cameos by NASCAR drivers. The result is every bit as ridiculous yet entertaining as its forebears. --Bret Fetzer

Description

Start your engines! Lindsay Lohan (MEAN GIRLS, FREAKY FRIDAY) does the driving when Herbie -- the fun-lovin', free-wheelin', '63 VW Beetle with a mind of its own -- returns better than ever in Disney's all-new, revved-up comedy adventure! Though a third-generation member of a NASCAR family, Maggie Peyton (Lohan) has always been forbidden from following her racing dreams by her overprotective father (Michael Keaton - FIRST DAUGHTER). But she has no idea her life is about to take a huge u-turn! After discovering the irresistible Herbie in a junkyard, they form a magical team that will save her family and rewrite the racing record books! With Breckin Meyer (ROAD TRIP), Matt Dillon (THERE'S SOMETHING ABOUT MARY), and an all-star cast along for the ride, you better believe ol' Number 53 has some new tricks under his hood!

5 out of 5 stars Great Movie.......2007-03-30

This movie is awesome. My older sister has it, so everytime I go to visit her I have to watch Herbie. Finally I decided I would get my own DVD of Herbie. It just came today, so I was very excited. The Music video of Lindsay is cool. Lindsay looks really good. This movie is so fun to watch. I recommend it to anyone. It's worth all the money. You will love it.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Movie!.......2007-03-19

We've owned this since it first came out & we love it. It's a movie that parents & kids can watch together. It's perfect for older kids who are 'too grown up' (lol!) for cartoons and yet whom you don't want watching movies with cursing & adult content. Great music, we have the soundtrack too.

4 out of 5 stars Go Herbie!.......2007-02-11

Lindsay Lohan fans, beware! If you are looking for a film in a "Mean Girls" style, don't go for it. However, if you like Disney's well-known manner of creating family-friendly films, you've got the right title.
"Herbie: Fully Loaded" is a remake of the popular film serial from the '70s about Herbie, a fast VW Beetle with a mind (and attitude!) of its own. However, in the 21st century, he's at the junk yard, too old-fashioned to be driven. There he sees Maggie (Lindsay Lohan), an ex-street racer, who is looking for a cheap vehicle to buy. She buys Herbie, and when she finds out about their common interest, the fun begins!
This film is a candy for kids and adults alike. It's not as sterile as "Confessions of a Teenage Drama Queen" (another Lindsay Lohan-Disney collaboration, and not a very succesful one), but it's not nearly as sassy as "Mean Girls", either! It's a movie about friendship, love... and how a VW beetle can be a regular Cinderella!

5 out of 5 stars Great, fun movie!.......2007-01-17

My daughter begged and begged for this movie and I gave it to her for Christmas. She loved it and has watched it several time already. Cute movie!

4 out of 5 stars Herbie Loves Lindsay.......2007-01-07

"Herbie Fully Loaded" has Herbie returning with Lindsay Lohan as his driver, a college graduate known as "Mags" looking to make a bit of money to pay the rent by way of the races. It was fairly good for the most part, lot of practical effects, and when there was computer animation it was minimal and tasteful. Went on a bit toward the end, but it was fine. Funny moments. Three and a half stars.

One of the box-office smashes of the summer of 1999, this film by director Barry Sonnenfeld (Men in Black, Get Shorty) was raked by critics but embraced by audiences. Based on the 1960s TV adventure show that starred Robert Conrad, this film reimagined Secret Service agent James West as Will Smith, adding Oscar-winner Kevin Kline as his sidekick, agent-inventor Artemus Gordon. President Ulysses S. Grant puts West and Gordon on the trail of malign genius (and former Confederate soldier) Dr. Arliss Loveless (Kenneth Branagh) in a story about racism, partnership, and world domination. The special effects are lavish, even garish, but not all that special; they're not enough to elevate a mundane and familiar plot. Even Branagh, playing a man who only exists from the waist up--literally--can't find the juice in this lumbering affair. Still, the fast-talking team of Smith and Kline is a nimble one. Smith's affable charm and Kline's subversive wit win many points, though not nearly enough. --Marshall Fine

3 out of 5 stars enjoyable.......2007-05-22

good western/science fiction/comedy movie; some parts & language questionable for younger children, but overall a funny family movie

4 out of 5 stars Very nice western-entertaining movie.......2007-01-28

A great idea - putting a science fiction theme into a wild west setting. And following Hollywood political correctness to a "T" - i.e. casting an Englishman as the baddy.

But I digress. Like all old fashioned fairy tales, this has a very dark undercurrent (Branagh's bad guy is driven to evil by being crippled and made impotent in the civil war; and I won't spoil the ending about the leading lady). And it's a cute updating of a cult TV show from a long time ago.

Enjoy it as a fun diversion for an evening, perhaps with your young cousins. And Will Smith is great.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect Satire on the old "Down South" ways!.......2006-11-27

Although this movie is a little lacking on the remake of the original Wild Wild West....it's supposed to be that way! The comedy is the best. Being raised here in the Southeastern US States, I can tell you it's great the way all of the actors pull together for many many laughs and plays on the old Southern Ways. I own my own personal copy and can't watch the movie enough! Thanks!

1 out of 5 stars Don't watch.......2006-11-26

When I was in middle school I believe and this movie was a hit, it was one of those things that breaks one's belief and hope in the species they are a part of. Why this movie, or the music from it proved a hit is nothing more than a testament to the idea that the earth might be better off being ran by cockroaches.

1 out of 5 stars Imagine Justin Timberlake as SHAFT.......2006-09-08

The "Wild Wild West" was a five-star TV show. It was so good that you would have thought that the powers that be in Hollywood would be unable to make a one-star mess out of it. But you would be wrong.

Casting the African-American Will Smith as Secret Service Agent James West in the place of the German-American Robert Conrad makes about as much sense as casting Justin Timberlake in Richard Roundtree's place as Shaft. Conrad played James West as the perfect combination of a man's man and a ladies man - much like James Bond, except a bit less refined and quite a bit more macho. Will Smith plays a wimpy, wiseguy, thinks-he's-cool-but-isn't James West. Before the film is half over, he'll have you cheering for the villain.

And speaking of the villain, in another piece of PC casting, the Hispanic dwarf, Dr. Miguelito Loveless, of the TV show is transformed here into Dr. Arliss Loveless, a double-amputee, Confederate flag-waving, Southern White. NO MINORITY VILLAINS ALLOWED!

Combine the poor casting with an especially inane script, and it all makes for one of the worst films of 1999. Despite all of the explosions and special effects, it still manages to be boring.

Love the classic monsters Frankenstein, the Mummy, Dr. Jekyll, the Creature, Dracula, the Werewolf, and the Invisible Man? They're all here in this animated, 90-minute video--and so are the vocal talents of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller. After discovering the secret of destruction, Baron von Frankenstein is retiring as head of the World Wide Organization of Monsters. He's handpicked his mortal nephew Felix to be his successor, and his fellow monsters are less than pleased. Even though Felix politely declines to carry on this family tradition, the monsters band together and double-cross one another in comic attempts to expel Felix from the group.

The "Rankin/Bass Animagic process" of using stop-motion photography with three-dimensional figures makes this video a visual feast for animation buffs, but it is outdated compared to modern animation techniques. Humorous details, like the count looking into a mirror to comb his hair and seeing only his comb reflected, permeate the video and will have viewers chuckling out loud and on alert for potential missed laughs. This video is best for children from about 5 to 12 years old or adults who want to reminisce over a movie viewed in their childhood. --Tami Horiuchi

5 out of 5 stars Monster Party stands the test of time.......2007-05-13

I remember this movie as a favourite from my childhood. Whenever it appeared on tv - I was always ready to watch it. Even though that was a good few years ago, Mad Monster Party stands the test of time. The story is simple -Monsters gather to party, bad verses badder and yet love wins in the end. The humour is quirky, the songs catchy. The characters are the original group of monsters that we all know and were scared of. When you think that this was made in the 60's the animation is brilliant. You can see at times where Tim Burton may have got some of his ideas. The colour seems to have been inhanced - all for the better. I knew this movie was a favourite and having not see it for many years pleased to say it remains one.

5 out of 5 stars BIG BOOBED PUPPET/ SKELETON ROCK BAND/ I THINK YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO...........2007-05-11

Corny as hell, but I still like it. I bought this movie used from Amazon a while back, for my kid. I had no idea what I was getting into. This thing has a bizarre plotline, that leads our protagonist (a geeky-Jimmy Stewart-esque kinda guy) onto an island inhabited by his uncle Boris (rightly voiced by Boris Karloff) and an army of monsters that he created.
Uncle Boris wants to hand the island and all of it's secrets over to his nephew, but the monsters are not to thrilled. Mainly Francesca (quite possibly the sexiest puppet I've ever seen). She believes that she should be the rightful heir of the island, so she seduces Dracula into helping her destroy the nephew.
Dracula screws everything up, so Francesca decides to settle things herself (biggest [...] I've ever seen on a puppet by the way).. only her plan is foiled when nephew smacks her in the face, and somehow causes her to instantly fall madly in love with him (they make out like every five minutes from here on..) Once the monsters discover whats going on with the two, they decide to get even with both.
I won't spoil the ending, but this is a cool little movie to watch with the kids on a rainy day. The best is when a rock band of skeletons pop out of nowhere and play a song called Dance The Mummy.. but the campy, sixties take on a slew of classic monsters, portrayed as puppets is all gravy. Rankin/Bass the guys that brought you Rudolph and all of those other X-mas shows from the sixties masterminded this gem.

2 out of 5 stars Some Nostalgia Is Best Left In The Past.......2007-04-02

In theory, MAD MONSTER PARTY has everything required to blast you into your childhood past: the voices of Boris Karloff and Phyllis Diller; characters that are riffs on Universal horror classics; and animated by Rankin-Bass, which created such memorable holiday television specials as Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer. But at ninety minutes, MAD MONSTER PARTY is much, much too long for the very slight story it has to tell.

The story, as such: Dr. Frankenstein, who earlier discovered the secret of life, has now discovered the secret of destruction. He invites all the monsters under his control to his remote island, there to announce his discovery--and his retirement and plans to pass his secrets onto his klutzy and inept nephew. The monsters are not pleased and decide to off said nephew and use the new discovery to suit themselves.

The premise is okay, but the actual result is remarkably tedious. The script is dull, the occasional song atrocious. The pace is very, very slow. The character designs are uninspired. As for the famed Rankin-Bass animation... let us be generous here and say that in this instance it has not dated very well. This is essentially stop-motion animation, the same process so memorably used by Ray Harryhouser in such memorable films as THE GOLDEN VOYAGE OF SINBAD and Tim Burton in THE NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS--but without the same budgets.

If you are considering a purchase for "family film purposes," you can do a lot better than this. If you yourself recall the movie fondly from your childhood, do yourself a favor and don't return to it, for you will almost certainly be disappointed; some nostalgia really is better left in the past. The only people likely to find the film of interest are hardcore collectors of stop-motion animation--and even then the interest is more likely to be technical than anything else. Such fans excepted, not recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Biased by Questar........2007-05-13

This film indeed shows the contrast in film only action effects of the 1960's when it is compared to current effects available with the use of animation. I purchased the DVD especially for the scenes showing the use of the Questar 3.5 inch reflective telescope. The film itself is an intriguing interplay between bad guy number one and bad guy number two and which one will win. It is a film which you can sit down and watch and enjoy. Maybe you'll have a little sardonic smile afterward.

4 out of 5 stars A Bronson Beauty.......2007-05-13

Saw this as a kid but could only remember the ending. Retro at it's best. Chrome fuel tank sides on an MX bike? Love it!

4 out of 5 stars A killer of a thriller.......2007-03-05

The Mechanic aka Killer of Killers is surprisingly good and, unusually for Michael Winner, also surprisingly well directed. A one-time Cliff Robertson vehicle (which at least explains the pipe Charles Bronson smokes throughout the film) and a clear influence on the Wachowski Brothers later script for Assassins, it sees Charles Bronson as the mob's most assured and ingenious hitman for some reason taking on an apprentice, attracted perhaps by his sociopathic indifference to death. The first half of the film is so sharp that it's a shame the rest of the movie starts down a more conventional road, but the action is well-handled, with a couple of way above average stunts involving a crashing motorbike and, later on, a car pushed off a mountain road that is more comprehensively trashed on the way down than you've ever seen in a film before or since: this one doesn't need to go up in a fireball to convince it's occupant isn't walking away.

Unfortunately the sorcerer's pathological apprentice is played by terminally smug Jan Michael Vincent (the man who sued the paramedics who saved his life after a drunken crash for not managing to do so without damaging his vocal cords): ideal casting, perhaps, but he's definitely a below-par Dennis Quaid act as an actor who seems to think he's good looking enough not to have to at least try to act. Equally unfortunately it also features the inevitable Jill Ireland (the star's wife and director's former girlfriend: that must have made for some interesting conversations on the set), albeit only for one scene, and for once there's a rather clever and perfectly valid reason for her bad acting. It doesn't make her big scene any less painful to watch but at least it stops it from doing any real damage to the film. If at times it feels like a more ambitious film may have been lost in rewrites, there's still a pleasingly nasty ending and any film where the first 15 minutes are played without dialogue gets extra points in my book.

MGM/UA's Region 1 disc may only offer a reissue trailer as an extra (when the title was changed to Killer of Killers to boost business from people who might have mistaken the original title for a car chase movie) but it has a fine widescreen transfer as well as a fullscreen version of the film.

4 out of 5 stars bronson.......2007-01-20

I liked the movie when it was originally in theatres and always had a fascination with the characters charles bronson chose to play. This particular movie gives an insight to what may have been the attitudes and life styles of the "contract killers" of the era. It was fun to watch and full of action for it's time, not full of the gore of todays action movies where blood and guts are more important than the story.

5 out of 5 stars For Those Who Enjoy A Surprise Ending.......2006-08-10

This movie is exciting and enjoyable. But, the best part is how it ends with an unexpected twist...

I.Q. has all the elements of a classic romantic comedy. Certainly Meg Ryan has demonstrated she has the stuff for funny love with films such as When Harry Met Sally... and Sleepless in Seattle, and director Fred Schepisi's Roxanne ranks among top contemporary romantic comedies. Even though Tim Robbins received acclaim for dramatic work in Jacob's Ladder and The Shawshank Redemption, his early comedic work shouldn't be forgotten (well, maybe Howard the Duck, but not the hilarious Sure Thing). And Walter Matthau? No explanation needed.

Combine I.Q.'s talent with its fresh story and it charms. Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Robbins) is captivated at first glimpse by pretty, perky Catherine (Ryan), a gifted academic who lives with her uncle, Albert Einstein (a brilliant Matthau). Catherine is engaged to pretentious James Moreland (the oh-so-appropriate English actor and writer Stephen Fry). Catherine's early 1950s world is all bookish and brainy, even though she has aspirations toward the romantic (Moreland's idea of a honeymoon is the Belgian Congo with Pygmies; she longs for Hawaii). Einstein and his professor pals, played by Lou Jacobi, Gene Saks, and Joseph Maher, conspire to match their beloved Catherine with the sincere and smart (though not intellectual) Ed.

This is a sweet--but not saccharine--story about "engineering" the course of true love and the ironic triumph of heart over head. The topnotch performances (which also include Tony Shalhoub and Frank Whaley as fellow mechanics) really draw audiences into this winning movie. --N.F. Mendoza

5 out of 5 stars I.Q........2007-05-15

Very good quality movie. A movie I would enjoy over and over again.

5 out of 5 stars Very Pleased.......2007-05-07

I love Meg Ryan and Tim Robbins so I love this movie. Amazon was very quick as usual with the order and I just love when I qualify for free shipping.

4 out of 5 stars It's a no-brainer - "I.Q." is a fun movie.......2007-05-01

I just rediscovered this little gem of a movie on DVD recently and, as soon as I watched it, remembered why I had liked it so much when it was released in the `90's. While one of the major elements of the plot is quite far-fetched - that is, fooling everyone into believing that an auto mechanic is a nuclear physicist - the story is so well executed by all the members of the cast that it works perfectly. The result is a light-hearted comedy with the anomaly of Albert Einstein (!) as a major player in the action.

Garage mechanic Ed Walters (Tim Robbins) falls in love at first sight with Catherine Boyd (Meg Ryan), but he doesn't yet know how he can possibly win her away from the "lesser professor," James Moreland (Stephen Fry), to whom she is already engaged. Serendipity comes into play when Catherine accidentally leaves her watch at the garage; Ed goes to her address to return it to her and finds out that she lives with her uncle, Albert Einstein (played to gleeful perfection by Walter Matthau). Einstein and his cronies (also played with joy and verve by several co-stars) provide the vast majority of the laughs as they set about to make sure that Catherine doesn't resign herself to a drab life with the "chimp pimp" but instead falls in love with vibrant Ed.

There is not a bad performance in this film, the 1950's are recreated with a great sense of nostalgia, and the scenery is beautiful as well (New Jersey lives up to its `Garden State' nickname in this one). The movie is rated PG for "Some mild language," but there are fewer profanities than you can count on one hand (and these truly are mild); I dislike profanity in movies, but I must admit I that I can't even recall exactly when in the movie any of the instances of it occurred in this one. Other than two brief instances of sexual innuendo (nothing truly crude, but not as cleverly funny as the writers must have thought), there is nothing here that would be objectionable to anyone. What is here is a pleasant, well-done movie, and I recommend it.

3 out of 5 stars very good.......2007-03-09

una pelicula super solida que permite ver el romance en todos los aspectos

5 out of 5 stars Excellent in Every Aspect.......2006-11-26

I miss Walter Matthau. I believe this to be one of his finer movies. As much as anything Einstein seems to fascinate the public, Matthau's portrayal of Him simply adds his persona. Although somewhat in a better light and greatly fictionalized.
This movie is completely charming, funny and one to be watched over and over again without loosing it's ability to entertain.
Meg Ryan was perfect as Einstein's niece in the film and did an outstanding job as both a thinker and being a bit dizzy at times in common sense matters. She added greatly to the success of this gem as she does with most everything that she has appeared in.
If you're looking for a decent, funny, and at times heartwarming movie this is where you should be. You won't be disappointed.

Two men, best friends from childhood, are summoned to fulfill their agreement to be suicide bombers for the Palestinian cause. Khaled and Said (Ali Suliman and Kais Nashef, both making striking film debuts) believe fervently in their cause, but having a bomb strapped to your waist would raise doubts in anyone--and once doubts have arisen, they respond in very different ways. Paradise Now is gripping enough while the men are preparing for their mission, but when the set-up goes awry and Khaled and Said are separated, it becomes almost excruciatingly tense. The movie passes no judgment on these men; impassioned arguments are made for both sides of the conflict. This is a work of remarkable compassion and insight, given the shape and sharpness of a skillful thriller. Its psychological portrait goes beyond the Palestinian/Israeli conflict and resonates with fanaticism and oppression throughout the world, be it related to a religious, nationalist, or tribal cause. A stunning film from writer/director Hany Abu-Assad. --Bret Fetzer

Description

"PARADISE NOW" follows two Palestinian childhood friends who have been recruited for a strike on Tel Aviv and focuses on their last days together. When they are intercepted at the Israeli border and separated from their handlers, a young woman who discovers their plan causes them to reconsider their actions.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Political and Tragic.......2007-05-07

This movie brings two very believable characters for the western audiences. The movie has its propaganda aspects to it, but even if one can see beyond the propagandas (and hopefully everyone does), the movie still tells a tragic story of two friends whose life is about to change forever. I just want to emphasize again how believable and relatable the two main characters are despite this being a propaganda movie. It delievers a completely foreign dilemma and translates it very well, and if that's not a masterpiece, I don't know what is.

5 out of 5 stars A Sad But Timely Movie.......2007-04-08

Said and Khaled are young Palestinian friends who are recruited to become suicide bombers against Israel. On their trip to Tel-Aviv, they become separated and their mission gets aborted. These two friends then have second thoughts about their mission, and much of the movie has to do with their struggle of whether or not to go through with their plan. Said says he was born in a refugee camp and has only left that camp once at six for medical reasons. He also bears the shame that his father was executed for being a collaborator. He believes that his life is without hope, that he essentially is already dead. Jamal, one of the masterminds of the plan, assures him and Khaled that upon their deaths they will be picked up by two angels. "This honor is granted to only a few." Said's female friend Suha tries to convince him that nothing will be accomplished by his becoming a martyr.

The acting in the film is superb; the suspense is nerve-racking; the ending will break your heart. The subject matter, of course, is as timely as the evening news. Released in 2005, the movie is in Arabic with subtitles.

3 out of 5 stars Makes you think, but don't forget to consider both sides.......2007-03-30

The film "Paradise Now" presents a compelling story of forty-eight hours in the life of two young Palestinian men who are selected to carry out a suicide attack in Tel Aviv, Israel. The plot focuses on childhood friends Khaled and Said who are living a difficult life under the Israeli occupation of the West Bank. The two friends work dead-end jobs at a local auto repair shop and place much of the blame for their difficult situation on Israel. After a long day at work, Said is approached by one of the leaders of the Palestinian resistance and told that he and Khaled have been selected to carry out an "operation" against Israel. As the story continues, the two friends contemplate the ethicality of their decision and struggle to decide whether or not to carry out their mission.
Artistically speaking, this film was done very well. There is excellent character development of the two friends, Said and Khaled. During their struggle to accomplish their mission the two friends question their own motives and the legitimacy of resorting to violence to solve a problem. The arguments posed in the film are also extremely relevant to the current conflict between Israel and Palestine. Through the characters of Said and Khaled, the director, Hany Abu-Assad, discusses controversial issues such as the Israeli occupation of the West Bank and the legitimacy of Palestinian suicide bombers. Having recently spent time in Israel, this film provided insight to the struggles of the Palestinian people. Many of the views conveyed toward Israel are understandable considering the low quality of life that Palestinians experience. I appreciated that this film pushed me to re-consider my own opinions toward this issue. Any successful piece of artwork forces audience members to think about the issue, and this film did just that. Having said this, "Paradise Now" also encouraged me to look at both sides of the issue, which is necessary in order to formulate an opinion about any issue.
Where I felt this film fell short was the context, or lack there of, that this story was placed in. Although this film is a good way for outsiders to understand the situation from the Palestinian point of view, my fear is that this fuels ignorance towards Israel and its people. "Paradise Now" provides no historical look at how the situation between Israel and Palestine has come to be. There is no reference to the original U.N. partition plan of 1948 in which the land of Israel was divided evenly between Jews and Palestinians. The only reference given to Israel is that of an occupying force, rather than a legitimate country, which overlooks the accomplishments that Israel has had in the last sixty years. Israel is constantly referred to as being an oppressive society, and at one point that it "has no morals" in terms of its military actions. The only reference given to Israel being provoked by suicide bombers is through the character of Suha. Suha is a moderate-minded young woman that Said falls in love with just before he sets off to carry out the attack. Although Suha does bring up valid arguments about why Said should not carry out the attack, she is in no way the heroine of the film, Said is. There is never any reference to the amount of fighting that Palestinians direct at each other. Much of the instability in Palestinian territories is due to political violence between the rival parties of Hamas and Fatah. It seems as if Abu-Assad has overlooked this issue in order to garner support against Israel. This being said, I don't believe that Abu-Assad's purpose of creating this film was to portray a balanced view of the situation. This film was successful in providing an ethnocentric view of life as Palestinian and the justifications, in their mind, of suicide attacks.
I did find this film valuable for audiences who are educated about the Israel-Palestine conflict and have an understanding of the history behind the situation. I would recommend this film to anyone seeking to understand the daily hardships that Palestinians go through. Even though people might not agree with everything that this film conveys, it is beneficial in that it forces one to reexamine their opinion about a certain issue.

5 out of 5 stars Very much worth seeing regardless of your POV.......2007-03-11

For those viewers who are wondering whether this is a pro suicide bomber movie or not, I can say that it may depend upon who's doing the viewing. Director Hany Abu-Assad, who is a Muslim was born in Nazareth, which is a largely Christian city in Palestine. He moved to the Netherlands when he was a young man and currently lives in Los Angeles. He believes the film presents "an artistic point of view of...[a] political issue."

I tend to agree. The proof perhaps is in the fact that some Palestinians feel the film wasn't fair to their situation while some Israelis feel that the film glorified suicide bombers. Both sides can find evidence in the film to support their point of view, and the arguments can become heated.

Personally I find suicide bombings abhorrent and counterproductive. My belief has long been that the Palestinians would further their cause through a non-violent approach similar to methods used by Gandhi and Martin Luther King Jr. Using your children to kill other people's children while committing suicide is not only morally wrong, but not likely to win the hearts and minds of people who can help you. Furthermore the idea (expressed in the film by the suicide bombers and those who exploit them) that some people are superior because they are not afraid to die demonstrates a limited understanding of human nature and ignores history. The Japanese used suicide bombers in World War II for example to no good effect. And those men were not the "humiliated" and "oppressed" uneducated youths typical of suicide bombers in the Middle East. Instead some of them were the cream of the young manhood of a growing nation. Understand also that if the United States had the need it would have no trouble persuading countless Americans to commit suicide for God and country. Some of the combat missions in the Pacific Theater amounted to something close to suicide. No single people have a monopoly on tribalism.

What Hany Abu-Assad shows in the film is that the justification for suicide bombing is at best suspect and at worse without any merit at all. "What happens afterward?" one of the bombers asks, and is told, "Two angels come and pick you up." This is not merely satire, it is a burlesque of the "Paradise Now" reasoning. Indeed the title of the film is itself satirical and ironic. Young me
