Writer-director David Mamet (House of Games, The Spanish Prisoner) applies his gift for con games to the world of politics with Spartan. A super-duper Secret Service agent (Val Kilmer, Wonderland) is assigned to find the kidnapped daughter of the President of the United States; was she kidnapped because of who she is, or as part of white slavery ring? Is she dead or alive? To find out the answers, Kilmer puts on disguises, engages in elaborate ruses, and kills ruthlessly--only to discover that he himself may be the one being fooled. Mamet pushes his macho/cryptic dialogue into laughably bad territory and some plot twists seriously test one's suspension of disbelief, but that's part of the game; like any con artist, Mamet knows how to hook you and reel you in, no matter how absurd things get. Also featuring Derek Luke, William H. Macy, and Ed O'Neill. --Bret Fetzer
Description

5 out of 5 stars Hello Operator?.......2007-05-29

I saw this film in the theater and have told everyone I meet to see it. It really is the pinacle in this genre. It is a thinking man's Bourne Identity.

By the way, Val Kilmer is the star, not Tia Texada.

5 out of 5 stars One riot, One Ranger........2007-02-17

This film is a dark, true life look into Special Ops, politics, government, and the men and women involved.
Val Kilmer plays a "black" operator sent to retrieve the daughter of
an un-named political figure (i.e. the President) by whatever means necessary. Kilmer plays "Scott" the "shooter" to perfection and is at times both paternal and then scary as all Hell. "Scott" is the bottom line of the "get the job done and ask no questions" operator who's mission it is to deal (i.e. kill) whatever problem is at hand. The spoken line "one riot, one Ranger" is stated by Scott and followed by another character telling of Spartan, King Leonidas' tactic to send aid in the form of one Spartan. Thus, we have our movie title.
Brief looks into spec ops "Selection", weapons, tactics, and mindset are well carried off. Note: author and former Delta Force operator Eric Haney served as the movies advisor.
Without giving away too much, this is an intelligent, well-made thriller
with very brief, ruthless, and brutally affected action scenes.
David Mamet is well known for his twisted, multi-layed stories and this is no exception. Stunning at times.
A must see.
Note: Mamet and Haney produce the CBS show "The Unit" about the lives of special operations in the field and at home.

4 out of 5 stars Intelligent thriller.......2007-02-06

Val Kilmer is back to top form here as the secret service agent at the top of his game who finds himself involved in a kidnap of a VIP politician - of course, this is David Mamet, so the plot has a way of going into blind alleys and left turns that you never quite see coming. In fact, do yourself a favour, and find out as little as you can about the plot, you'll enjoy the movie all the more! Having said that, the loose ends dont quite all tie up, and the ending does not live up to the build up, but this is only a minor quiblle when the acting and script are of this quality.
The music is minimal, and the directing is not flashy, but all serves to further the story - a quality so lacking in Hollywood these days.
The pace never lets up, and the script of course is sharp and real. William H Macy plays a small but pivotal role in a rare serious role, and the rest of the cast exude realism in all the roles, not least Ed Reilly who casts off his Married with Children tag with this one.
This is not one to see just because you want action, but for an intelligent thriller that engages the brain, thumbs up.

4 out of 5 stars Operatives . . ........2006-12-22

This is David Mamet all the way and something of a tribute to the unnamed, unknown, and unofficial operatives who give their lives to international espionage and counter-espionage. Val Kilmer captures well the steely focus of the hired mercenary who goes after the international white-slave traders who kidnap a prominent politician's daughter. Mamet happily celebrates the toughest and most dedicated of this fraternity of shadowy loners ready to obey the command of any superior. Neither strategists nor tacticians, they are skilled at tracking down and killing bad guys. Period.

This being Mamet, of course, it's not that simple. The plot takes one unexpected turn after another, and appearances are invariably deceiving. His is a bleak vision of a world populated by the morally compromised and people traumatized by the inhumanity they have witnessed. Kilmer's character survives and even thrives in this morass because he is an unsentimental machine, the "Spartan" ideal of an all-male world where it's kill or be killed, and there's plenty of both - even a suicide. Meanwhile, there's the usual flat, rapid-fire Mamet dialogue, like "Dragnet" on steroids. If you like Mamet - and I do - you'll probably like this one. The DVD includes a commentary by Kilmer.

4 out of 5 stars A great pair.......2006-10-24

[...]
The amazing writer and now director David Mamet returns to write and direct an 2004 entertaining domestic spy/crime drama thriller with Val Kilmer. Mamet has a legacy of some truly great movies, including Heist (2001/I), Ronin (1998), The Spanish Prisoner (1997), Hoffa (1992), the awesome Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) (play & screenplay), House of Games (1987), The Verdict (1982) and the incredible remake of The Postman Always Rings Twice (1981).
Val Kilmer does very good job in this one as the stoic undercover operative, although his brief one-line observations about the state of man and displays of emotion seem out of place. Anybody who has seen his incredible performance as Gay Perry in the recent and engaging crime drama Kiss, Kiss Bang, Bang, knows he is amazingly capable in this genre.
The script crackles with Mamet's trademark dialogue, which in this tightly woven genre fits - pay attention, the plot twists depend NOT on the steady stream of action, but on the character observations of how things don't fit together. Excellent support cast all round, with roles changing as the plot evolves. Critics argue that the plot is too complicated/clever, but this was entertaining, with overtones of political conspiracy that make you realize how easy it is for the truly powerful to manipulate events.
I thought the music and action at the end could be tighten up a notch - there isn't a big money-shot explosion or anything to close the movie - just another plot twist. For a more explosive ride, with a more entertaining character, and a much simpler drug-induced and graphic plot, see the recently released Crank - excellent action/adventure from the Transporter man.

This is a great movie that combines extreme sports, love interest, and godly values. Clean and good for mixed company parties that love music.

5 out of 5 stars EXTREMEly Good!.......2004-12-14

I saw this movie last night, and I LOVED it!!!! It was SO not what I was expecting. It was hilarious, with quite a few good Christian morals mixed in. And the best part was that it was clean - no sex, no drugs, no swearing. If you have a random sense of humor, like extreme sports, and/or are craving a nice, clean, GOOD movie, watch this one! It rocks!

5 out of 5 stars Extreme Days-Awsome Ways!.......2004-11-24

I was so overwhelmed to find such a great movie! This is really a family movie. I [my husband and I] was watching it not knowing what to expect. When I was listening to the music. I realized that this is the same music that my youngest teen listens to. I hear it in church. Then we were really getting into the movie. No nude scenes! No violence! No cursing! Wait, do they still make thes movies. Well I couldn't believe it. We watched this over and over again. We have looked to buy it. My 16 year old daughter has wanted it for Christmas this being the 2nd now. Not any place I have gone to sells it. That doesn't surprise me at all! Some never heard of it. When you can see a movie with all the feeling of God moving you. Well anyone that hasn't seen it is missing out of a GREAT movie. I wish we had it and more like it. I just pray that we can soon find it along with more like it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely good!!!.......2004-10-23

A story about 4 guys, who decide to go on a road trip, after they've finished their high school. Firts they travell to Mexico in order to catch some serious waves. They get some serious surfing over there. But then the news comes, that one of their's grandfathers died and they must come to Seattle to collect the money he left for him. So they decide to trvell up there. On the way they meet a girl, who turns out to be a cousin of one of them. So together they continue the journey only stopping to do some extreme motocross jumps, some extreme skateboarding and snowboarding. But durin this journey one of the guys falls in love with her (of course), but they get into a fight and she leaves. Well in the end, they found out that there hasn't been any money left for one of them. After they raise some money, they decide to fly to Alaska in order to get some serious snowboarding and they want to take the girl with them. Well, at first she doesn't want to leave, but in the end she appears in the plane nad that's the happy end of the story.
Also cool in this movie, beside the story, are the clips of some great surfers, skaters, motocross riders and snowboarders, doing really extreme tricks. Awesome!

5 out of 5 stars What is there to like about Extreme Days?.......2004-10-12

Everything! Everything is to like about this film.

My youngest brother watched this movie first and then told me I had to see it. I gave in and watched it with him, and laughed hysterically.

First of all in response to some other comments about this movie-- Christian films just like secular films require money, and support. You won't see big names like Disney backing up a Christian film, and you can't expect the same viewing quality. The Passion, made by Mel Gibson was the first Christian film that had film quality, and not everyone has the amount of money or resources as Mel.

That asside, this movie was awesome. It was powerful. It was geared toward a young audience and has some childish scenes, but still makes for an amazing family movie night. It's a movie with a lesson. It's a movie with a point. But most importantly---

It's a movie WITHOUT language, sex, violence, nudity, and gore.

Completely appropriate for the entire family, and a movie I am proud to own. I am a 20 year old college student and I still think it's the best movie (Jonah (Veggie Tales) being a close second) I've ever seen.

I'm not going to hype this up as a movie that places all the focus on Jesus, because I do think they could have used a few more scenes that included prayer, and/or talking about the Lord. However, I think it's clean, and the overall plot is a story of how God can take the seemingly bad things in life and turn them into good if we would place our trust in Him.

The Genesis 50:20 rule "What you intended for bad, the Lord intended for good."

If you would like to see a Christian film with a real message, complete honesty, true cleanliness, and non-stop hilarity, buy this movie! And watch it over and over again--you will want to, trust me.

Thanks for readin,

2 out of 5 stars Didn't quite meet the reduced standards I had for it.......2007-04-04

I thought I had an idea what to expect from this film. Even putting aside the fact that Netflix has inappropriately listed this film as a Horror movie, I knew it would be cheap and schlocky and amateurish and puerile. I was okay with that. Nobody watches/rents/buys these films without the purpose of seeing beautiful women naked and frisky with each other. No other production values matter in this regard. Yet, this movie still disappoints. I didn't care that the acting fell somewhere between poor and none. I didn't mind that they seemed to be shooting this film without a script or any sort of rehearsing ahead of time... or any sort of preparation for that matter.

What makes this movie most disappointing is that it would have only taken a few minor changes to make BIG improvements. The biggest problem is the completely pointless and inveterately irritating presence of Lenny Juliano: a fat, dopey, whiney, douchebag who brings absolutely nothing worthwhile or useful to this film. He isn't at all funny, and this worthless sack of lint threatens to interfere with the only merit this film has otherwise, which is gratuitous nudity and physical interaction between the female principles. Get rid of him, and the difference is significant. The biggest source of humor in this film was the highly improbable premise that the women were in a sorority, or that they were even college-aged for that matter.

But even the amorous interaction between the "actresses" really came off more as a multi-dancer routine from a strip club (a lot of tease-touching and uninspired slow-grinding). Given that these are women who have done some fairly unambiguous/explicit work in other films does give one pause to wonder why this one was so tame and lethargic, especially since the film had nothing else going for it. Forget the dialogue and acting and plot (assuming there was any to begin with). Just concentrate on the one and only reason anyone would want to watch this film.

Unfortunately, this film just wasn't very good, even by the remarkably meager standards it was measured by. So why 2 stars instead of just one? The nudity was Great!

3 out of 5 stars I miss the original.......2003-02-14

I am a huge fan of Julie K. Smith, a main character from the original as well as the hottest woman on the planet. So why is she not in the sequel? Bare Wench 2: Book of Babes is an okay movie: it's got lots of bare breasts, great if you're into just any old rack. For us B-movie fans used to quality boobage however, it's not the quantity, it's the quality. So while julie k. smith does make an electrifying cameo during the hilarious introduction, the rest of the more numerous cast doesn't pick up the slack. Nikki Fritz is the only exception. She is a good leader for the girls as she was in the original, which brings me to another point: the girls of "Book of Babes" are not as good at improvisation as the original cast. Boo-hoo. The original was a good movie because all the girls, even Lunk, made it entertaining when they spoke with their tops on or off. Unfortunately, the second cast is not able to fill their cups.

5 out of 5 stars Best Bare Wench yet.......2002-06-19

I really enjoyed Bare Wench 2, even more than the classic original. There could really be an oscar for best screenplay and script as well as a best actor for Dick Bigdickian. A definite purchase.

5 out of 5 stars Nice Eye Candy.......2002-06-18

If you have found this on Amazon, then it IS exactly what you are looking for. T & A beginning to end, lots of nudity, some relatively poor acting as would be expected. The women are beautiful, and take their clothes off (what little they are ever wearing) for what seems like almost no reason. Some lesbian action, but mostly just excellent tease nudity. Definitely what you would be looking for in this type of movie. On the SV spank-o-meter this film gets 9 out of 10.

4 out of 5 stars Book of Babes - Bare Wench 2.......2002-04-22

The movie is good for watching gorgeous ladies and seeing son skin. Has a good plot. Only problem was the guy in it was sort of a nerd but the dvd was clear and worth a look at. A definite rental at least!

3 out of 5 stars HEART OF THE MATTER.......2005-03-15

An original movie that has some brilliant moments, but ultimately is a little unsatisfying because it's hard to really like any of the characters. The movie opens with a woman boarding a train; she is covered in blood and carries a sack that is also dripping blood. She ends up in a cemetery where she is digging up a grave but is apprehended by the police and we see her in jail, telling us the story in flashbacks. We meet a t.v. producer and her extremely jealous husband; he has every right to be--she is having a torrid affair with a new screenwriter. We then witness a terrible accident in which a cocaine-snorting woman slams her vehicle into a seventeen year old cyclist. We find out that this cyclist is the son of the woman we met in the beginning. Meanwhile, jealous hubby has had a debilitating heart attack and needs a new heart. The cyclist is pronounced brain dead, and being an organ donor, the doctors request permission to use the young man's heart for the jealous husband's transplant. From thereon, we are treated to a disturbing "Fatal Attraction" type of scenario in which the mother becomes obsessed with her son's recipient, and a tense web of deceit, ultimately leading to tragedy, plays out.
Christopher Eccleston is very good as the husband; Saskia Reeves is riveting as the disturbed mother; Kate Hardie is callously cool as the wife (her murdering of her husband's cat is an indicator of this woman's psyche); and Rhys Ifans as the hopelessly horny lover does well, too. The quality of the DVD's sound hurts the film immensely; the dialogue is always either ahead of or behind the physical movements of the actor's lips. The ending is quite graphic and disturbing.
HEART is unique and its impact stays with you; the main problem is the inability to truly understand or like the participants.

5 out of 5 stars CASH AND CARY.......2004-06-27

Cary Elwes burst onto the cinematic screen years ago in the disarmingly funny THE PRINCESS BRIDE. Since then, he's surfaced in such films as THE CRUSH and COMIC BOOK VILLAINS. He's delightfully good in this off the wall comedy that is original in its concept and its delivery. Who would have ever thought Academy award nominee and straightlace Mary Steenburgen could play such a despicably bitchy con woman? She's brilliant as the money starved hussy who tricks Elwes into thinking she's having his baby and gets him to change his insurance policy to leave the child as his beneficiary. In steps the delightful Elaine Hendrix as the inept hit woman hired to dispose of Elwes. But, she finds herself falling in love with him and they concoct, along with the sinister Christopher Lloyd, a plan to turn the tables on Steenburgen and her doped up daughter (Tanya Allen). Add Robert Englund as a particularly weird "minister", Billy Ray Cyrus in a brief role as an insurance frauder, and Gene Simmons as a sadistic beautician, and you have one strange but wonderfully entertaining movie. Gerry Jingles as the waiter in the diner is superb too in a brief but memorable series of vignettes.
Granted, this is off the wall comedy and may not be for everybody but we certainly found it delightful!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best comedy since The Big Lebowski.......2004-01-29

Never disagreed so much on a film review than with the girl/woman who reviewed this film too.
To make a long story short: THIS FILM IS A ... MASTERPIECE. It's full of both ironic and sometimes ugly humour, all the way through. But if you like the films by the Coen brothers, and especially The Big Lebowski this is a film for you.
Best lines was (here I must trust upon memory as I saw it six months ago) something like:

(Ordinary voice): I guess you've never done it
(Nervous voice): I've done it
(Ordinary voice): So tell me how it smells...
(LONG PAUSE)
(Nervous voice): It smells like flowers and bees
(Shouting voice): DAMN WRONG YOU IDIOT!!! It smells like sweat, cheese and rotten fish!!!

This is one of the great moments in the film as 30 year old nervous, nerdy, naive and wimpy insurance man (played by Cary Elwes) is detected to be a VIRGIN by his working colleague. A situation soon to be taken advantage of by two trailer park [girls](mother and daughter), following a insurance fraud.

Even though I don't recall the storyline in detail, this is a film that made me laugh throughout. Hysterically at times. Like The Big Lebowski this is classic entertainment from the first to last second. And like that film it had great acting, great dialouge and great humour.

Except for the very narrow minded, the ones who can't stand irony or offensive humour, or the extreme sour ones, I'll just say to anyone who reads this:

BUY THIS CLASSIC TODAY!!! YOU WON'T REGRET IT!!!

1 out of 5 stars A *Painfully* Bad Movie.......2004-01-07

When I ordered this movie, I was looking forward to a Cary Elwes Movie I hadn't yet seen. I awaited the arrival of the DVD with anticipation.
Now I wish I hadn't ordered it..
This film ranks right up there as one of the worst movies I have ever seen and not walked out on. I wish I could wash my brain out in bleachwater and forget it all!
This film has single handedly made me question my own taste; Was I a fool to like Shakespeare, the poetry of Emily Dickenson, and Cary Elwes? Maybe.

I'm sure they were aiming for broad humor, but damn It fell nothing but flat, and it left me squirming in embarrasment for each and every actor.
The Director should be pilloried. Every actor in it indulges in broad over acting worthy of your local amature theater, and as a stage play, it might have worked.
Maybe, but I have my doubts.

Not only did the director have everyone in this film overacting horribly, but the costume and makeup designers made sure they all looked as horrible as possible while doing it.
Watch the Previews available on the web.
Each actor actually lookes pretty good in the preview, compared to th film itself. The Moustache Cary Elwes he wears in this film...I cannot begin to verbalize my horror. And the hair. And the Toupees. The list goes on and on.

I suspect most of the actors in this film did it as a favor to somebody- maybe the Director, since she seems to have been the casting director on a lot of projects.
I don't know, but I suspect all of them ended up feeling very badly betrayed and embarrased by this project.

Ok, Have I ranted enough? Maybe not.
Please, even if you are in desperate need of a Cary fix, Stay away.
Watch "Lady Jane", "The Princess Bride" or "The Crush".
Heck, if you like war films, watch "Glory", but if you want to be able to enjoy these films without horrifying images of Cary in a Walrus moustach and oversized 1980' throwback spectacles popping to mind and ruining the experience, then stay far, far away from this video.

3 out of 5 stars not one of the best "family drama" movies..........2007-04-03

*The Amati Girls* was alright but not impressive. There were too many stars but little development for each of the characters.

4 sisters band together to help their mother. They've just buried their fathers/husband not long ago. Their mother is obsessed with her inevitable death. She wants everything planned with a casket picked out, a dress made and all that. The daughters want their mother to take it easy and just enjoy life.

Meanwhile, the sisters are dealing with issues on their own. 2 sisters are married and have their own marriage issues to deal with. 1 sister feels pressured to be married but doesn't see the excitement about marriage. At the same time, the single sister brings up uncomfortable issues that she sees in her 2 married sisters. The youngest is mentally challenged and wants a boyfriend. The sisters tell her that "sometimes a pot cannot have a lid".

Of course, while the mother is obsessed with her death that could happen anytime, something else unexpectantly happens. I guess for me, there could have been a build-up leading to this unexpectant turn of event. Symptoms could have been shown. There was a brief moment but that was like the frame just before the "surprise". It was just so out of the blue.

The impact of this surprise turn has changed the family. Marriage issues have been resolved. The single sister overcomes her fear. The youngest sister is given more freedom. The mother enjoys life a bit more. At least, the movie ended with a good feeling.

Like I said, there were just too many stars in the film. That is usually not a problem. The problem was trying to show all the stars with each of them having a few lines. You don't really get to know them on a deeper level. And Cloris Leachman as an Italiam mom...I'm sorry but I just could not buy that. She was that one thing that prevented me from suspending disbelief while watching the movie.

5 out of 5 stars Family Life with all the Strife.......2005-03-30

What a delightful movie. The characters were not only lively but alive, mirroring real every day life and strife within a family. Each character brought a unique personality to the story that the audience could easily associate with someone they know within their own family or circle of close friends.

The story has a true-to-life flow that the viewer can assimilate into and be part of the drama, the laughter and tears as the plot of the movie develops. The script does a good job of capturing the common emotions, actions and reactions of the characters to conflict, opinion, and resolve.

Not an epic, but it is a very nice movie to watch with loved ones. Plenty of knowing head nods and `ahhh' moments to share and enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Greatest Family Movies.......2002-06-11

This movie has heart. Pure and simple. The core of the movie has to do with four sisters, all having different troubles, yet they are always there for one another. This is truly a film that cannot be missed. It has humor, drama, and a general sweetness to it. I highly recommend this to anyone who wants to see a good family movie.

1 out of 5 stars DVDs make good coasters.......2007-05-24

This is quite possibly the worst film I have ever seen. It doesn't even have the virtue of self-mockery. What a waste of Colm Feore and Sean Bean....

1 out of 5 stars WORST MOVIE EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2006-07-08

I expected this to be bad; thank goodness I borrowed it for free from the library. But I never imagined that a movie could be as bad as this (especially with such good actors as Sean Bean and Colm Feore).

But that brings me to the first biggest flaw in this disaster of a movie: Steve Guttenberg as an action hero. WHAT THE HECK IS HE DOING HERE?!!! He's fine and dandy in a comedy, but in an action movie, he tries too hard to be like Tom Cruise from the Mission Impossible movies. His lines are muttered with subtle intensity that just doesn't sound right. Lines like "I don't wanna see him!" "You guys can't keep track of a video tape," and "I still don't like you, Murdoch" made me laugh for most of the movie. They weren't badly written; they just sounded funny coming from Guttenberg.

The other actors and actresses don't seem to have the same problem; they all perform adequately.

The rest of the movie is still terrible. Special agents retrieving a bioweapon; it's a story that's been done before many times. But everything about this movie makes the other stories (like MI:2) look like LOTR material. It's one thing for a movie to have impossible-looking effects or stunts, but Airborne has garbage in it that would never happen in real life but still takes itself too seriously.

For example, in the first twenty minutes, agents have to blow the side of an airplane open (while in the air) and infiltrate its interior. So they do that...and inside the airplane, it's perfectly still. I'm pretty sure that, when you breach the hull of a plane, the air inside the cabin will be sucked out! But the guy strolls into the cabin (which looks distinctly like an underdressed sound stage) and picks up a suitcase on the floor. What the heck?!!! The deadly virus was just lying on the floor?!!! And why didn't the air suck it out of the airplane?!!!

Secondly, I don't think a CD can take control of a car and send it crashing into a harbor. Even if it is a GPS disc or whatever, the curcuits in a CD player should be independent to the circuits driving the car (especially in 1997, when this movie came out). So what the heck?!!!!!

Also, I gotta love the way, at the end, how the deadly virus rolls off of the speeding airplane, lands on the hood of the car, and rolls around some more. The way this whole sequence was filmed was an obvious attempt to drag out the suspense. But it's still stupid.

Finally, in the end, the canister they were all chasing around turned out to be filled with harmless gel-filled marbles. WHAT THE HECK?!!!!!! All of this was just a decoy?!! What was the darn point?!!!

The rest of the movie was boring. There are only two good things about this film: the acting of Sean Bean and Colm Feore, and the photography. Everything else is terrible. I wouldn't watch it again even if it was the last movie on Earth. If you want something similar but worthwhile, watch either a Mission Impossible, James Bond, or Jack Ryan movie.

1 out of 5 stars Some actors should NOT bulk up for a part.............2005-08-31

This is so bad it will be my contribution to the next bad movie party I go to. It is clear from the start that Steve Gutenburg was taking this role seriously.... the other principles were walking through their lines. I think they got a whiff of how much it stank early on and they were going through the motions for their paychecks. Sean Bean "acted" as usual but was spared sharing space on screen with any of the principles till the final scene where it was like an actor walking onto a high school stage that is how defined the contrast was. Some actors do not look good scruffy. Some actors should not bulk up for a part. Those two statements apply to "Police Academy" Steve. His scruffy look translates to bum and indigent and his bulking up makes him look potato lumpy not buff. Pair that with one of the worst scripted dialogues in Hollywood history and you have BAD movie. I can only guess that all of the principles really really needed the money for remodeling or something or their agents signed them before the script was written by the monkeys that must of typed it out. I would love to know the back story to this disaster.

3 out of 5 stars THE GUTTENBERG DISASTER.......2004-09-03

Steve Guttenberg arrives in this strangely inept film. He has a buff body, a linear scar on his face, and constipation..oops, maybe it just seemed that way. Going for the Bruce Willis/Clint Eastwood silent type of hero, Steve mumbles his lines and tries to show all of his emotions with grunts and whispers. He is not an action hero, but he tries, maybe too hard.
Seems there's this special ops force called Mach I, in which he, Colm Feore (a good actor wasted), Torri Higginson (who does okay). His boss is played by the ubiquitous bad guy, Kim Coates, who smokes a cigar like it were a popsicle. There's this virus that the special ops team rescued, but now it's been stolen again by Sean Bean (who has little screen time so don't expect too much from him). Little tension is generated, and although it's not a great movie, it manages to keep you guessing for a while.
A rental when something new has come out and you can't find anything else.

1 out of 5 stars I wish I could rate this lower than 1 star..........2004-06-22

I love most movies and I'm a big fan of Sean Bean so I thought that I would at least LIKE this movie. Also, I'm Canadian and this is a mostly-Canadian movie so I was prepared to cut it some serious slack. Nothing could have prepared me for the garbage that is "Airborne". Steve Guttenberg as an action hero? Give me a break. The acting throughout the movie was so bad I am going to have trouble sleeping tonight. I now have only two wishes in my life.

1. I hope that you never have to sit through this movie.
2. I wish I could get those 6 hours back. Oh wait, the movie's under 2 hours - it only seemed like 6 hours...

Don't watch this.

If you're a fan of "The Ultimate Weapon" then you've GOT to see this movie! Its a really good film with a great cast. Carl Weathers is awesome in reprising his role from "Predator"- but I'd still love to see a Hogan/Schwarzeneggar action movie..

4 out of 5 stars A sleeper!.......2001-12-23

Do you like international kidnapping, former NAVY SEALS, muscles and a lot of military hardware not to mention a very pretty lady in your movies? I bought SHADOW WARRIORS taking a chance that it would be an action movie with some substance. After all, Carl Weathers and Terry 'Hulk' Hogan are a sure thing for plenty of action. And Shannon Tweed, well, she's great to look at! To my pleasant surprise, this is a very entertaining movie, fun to watch and worth the price.

4 out of 5 stars A great rolling action charged movie with a 007 flair finish.......2000-10-14

Hulk Hogan was great, Shannon Tweed her beautiful self with some exceptional martial arts skills. This combination could have longevity if the same standard of supporting actors are included. The movie is a brilliant combination of numerous action and adventure movies that has the possibility of drawing the Hulkster passion following from the late 80's.

Keep them coming, with Shannon Tweed holding her beauty and the Hulkster in the shape he is in, the movie we can have Dad, Mum and the Kids, and the teenagers, the weekend warriors and every man going through midlife crisis who are looking for hope savilating for more.

This movie proves a good team combination with great directing can be there with the over paid box office stars and promoted gusto movies.

Keep them coming I love the experience

Hello everyone on here. I am a big movie-TV series buff. I stumbled on this movie while visting another website, and it linked me over to amazon. In some cases, these reviews I have already read from other amazon members on here are right about one thing. this is a B-movie no doubt about that. Drive-In is the story of a lonely boy who has cruel mean parents, and he's locked in his room for most of his life. The only thing outside of reality that intertains him the most is that across the street from his bedroom window is you-guessed it... he sees a DRIVE-IN THEATER... While looking at the drive-in from his bedroom window, he sees on the drive-in screen playing nothing but B-Troma slasher movies. and while no gore is being perfected or shown in this movie in anyway. this is a movie that I want to see. from the reviews on here that I have already read, it is with the greatest respect to me, a certain fan base of the film and judging by the reviews... and out of respect for the DRIVE-IN THEATER... I am giving this a 5 star. this is my rating... because I am a DRIVE-IN THEATER FAN... And I will being ordering this movie ammediatly. thanks again amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Honking your horn will only delay the movie..., .......2005-01-23

It's it "bad"? You bet,It has to be doesn't it? It was mostly shot at a drive-in with a video camera with about the same budget as the price of a popcorn and a large Coke at the snack bar.A (well...let's just call him "slow" to keep from being too unkind about it) teenage boy has spent most of his life locked in his room by his ashamed mother with no contact with the outside world. All that he knows about people is from his mother and a house keeper who are quite cold and cruel to him.Outside the window of the room he is locked in he can see the screen of the local drive-in that runs nothing but Troma and horror films( Sounds like heaven on Earth.Anyone got the address? I'll be there as fast as I can!). One night he finally can't stand it anymore so he breaks free and kills everyone he sees buy.....well.....he...uh..kills them by what ever he can find.I can only guess because we don't get to see anything! Bummer. It works out like this: He swings the speaker around by the cord walks toward the next victim and...and...nothing.CUT.The filmmakers didn't have the budget for any gore.It looks like they where going to cut it in later and never did.Did the local butcher shop close or something? Oh well I guess ya just can't have it all.

All in all I liked it.But, if it wasn't for it being shot at a drive in with Troma films playing on the screen, and a nacho cheese version of the fast food fun game "bobing for french fries" it would be pointless. For big time drive-in fans only.

1 out of 5 stars A TROMATIC EXPERIENCE.......2004-11-13

DRIVE IN has all the ingredients of your standard slasher flick:
*THE OLDEST LOOKING TEENAGERS IN RECENT CINEMA
*INCREDIBLY BAD ACTING
*STUPID KIDS DOING STUPID THINGS
*HORRENDOUS EDITING AND LIGHTING
*A KILLER WHO IS ABOUT AS FRIGHTENING AS BARNEY THE DINOSAUR
*AN OUT OF PLACE, IF FUN, MUSICAL SCORE
*CLIPS FROM FIVE TROMA STUDIO MOVIES WITH GORE, GORE AND MORE
*THE LESSON THAT HAVING SEX OR SMOKING POT WILL LEAD TO SLAUGHTER

The director obviously intended to give us a moral lesson in the effect of horror movies on the our psyches.

Well trust me folks. This movie should have no effect. It offers further ammunition to the fact that slasher movies may have seen their day. When's the last time you saw a really good and imaginative one???

1 out of 5 stars terrible, terrible movie.......2004-11-11

I have myself see over hundreds of horror movies, and this ranks in the top 5 worst i have ever seen.Trust me, no deaths on camera, ridiculous plot, boring, slow, and awful acting.Stay far away, I wouldnt even rent it!!

3 out of 5 stars Could Have Been Better.......2004-09-19

Not bad for a B-movie. The idea of a disturbed kid locked up in his room all of his life with a drive in that plays nothing but hack em up movies all the time in perfect view from his window, and escaping to the drive in to perform the only thing he knows is a good idea for a horror flic. But i was dissapointed when i couldnt see most of the kills because the kept flashing over to the drive in screen as the kid (Billy) was going for his own kill.Whenever they did show him kill there was hardly any blood.I mean, come on.B-movies are supposed to have too much blood. Also gonna have to complain about the picture quality.Wasnt very good at all in some parts. I would rent before you buy it.This is a movie i watched 1 time and will probably never watch again. On a scale of 1 - 10, i will give it a 6
