Ancient curses, all-powerful monsters, shape-changing assassins, scantily-clad stewardesses, laser battles, huge explosions, a perfect woman, a malcontent hero--what more can you ask of a big-budget science fiction movie? Luc Besson's high-octane film incorporates presidents, rock stars, and cab drivers into its peculiar plot, traversing worlds and encountering some pretty wild aliens. Bruce Willis stars as a down-and-out cabbie who must win the love of Leeloo (Milla Jovovich) to save Earth from destruction by Jean-Baptiste Emmanuel Zorg (Gary Oldman) and a dark, unearthly force that makes Darth Vader look like an Ewok.

Product Description

New York cab driver Korben Dallas didn't mean to be a hero, but he just picked up the kind of fare that only comes along every five thousand years: A perfect beauty, a perfect being, a perfect weapon. Now, together, they must save the world. Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, and Gary Oldman star in acclaimed director Luc Besson's outrageous sci-fi adventure, an extravagantly styled tale of good against evil set in an unbelievable twenty-third century world.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great movie finally remastered.......2007-07-02

This is a really fun, fun movie. It's not the beat all of science fiction as it was hyped when it was released, but it certainly is a good combination high adventure, situation comedy, cyberpunk, and Bruce Willis gun fighting action. Doesn't make sense? Don't worry. I'll explain.

High adventure comes from the plot: save the earth from evil by finding some mystic items and a perfect human before the appointed zero hour. That much is obvious. Cyberpunk explains in a way the setting of the futuristic urban scenes, which are fantastically portrayed in this movie. All of the settings and technology were impressive as well as stylish. The special effects were well above average and in many scenes very impressive, but a situation comedy? You got it. I won't get into the details. I will say there are quite a few scenes that involve the kind of subplots you find in sitcoms. This is a good thing by the way. A lesser movie would mess this up. Director Luc Besson made all of these elements (no pun intended) fit seamlessly.

Acting is great. Despite popular opinion of models not being very good actors the models that acted in this film did a good job of being campy in an entertaining way without hamming it up. I can go on an on about each of the reas actors and how they succeeded in pulling off whatever character, but I will digress to two ends of the spectrum. Chris Tucker as Ruby Rhod is priceless and worth the price of admission alone. One exception I would have to say is Tommy "Tiny" Lister as the President. Up until the final scenes his acting was pretty dry. I also have to criticize whoever decided to hype up the fact the movie has Luke Perry in it, who played Billy. Billy did nothing to carry the plot and only had a cameo role in the beginning. Ugh... Hollywood.

The movie can get too trendy. The music, though nice, didn't really fit the setting. The very last scene is totally lame and if you ask me unlikely (sorry Korby...). And there is a scene or two that was just trying too hard to be hip. I can forgive all that because the comedy, action and drama do fit in to what ends up being a mirthful romp in high flying action.

Sony dropped the ball on their first blu-ray release of The Fifth Element. The uncompressed PCM and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 surround tracks blew you away, but the video quality was merely on par with regular DVD resolution. This time Sony listened to their fans and remastered the movie so that you get the full 1080p love you deserved the last time. Bought the first blu-ray? No problem. Sony seems to be offering an exchange program. Just contact Sony and they will set up a way you can pass your old blu-ray for the remastered one. Contact info is below:

One downside though: no extras. That's right. All the cool stuff in the ultimate edition is gone. Getting this DVD is just like getting the first one they released. You get only the movie and some trivia text. If I were you I would still wait until they make some kind of special edition in blu-ray so you get the higher resolution AND the goodies.

If you want to experience a varied range of pleasant emotions without taking any one of them too seriously then you're going to love The Fifth Element. If you want high definition and special features then you better wait. I am betting this is going to be the case with most (if not all) new HD-DVD and Blu-Ray DVDs that first come out.

4 out of 5 stars What's Not to Love!.......2007-06-29

As I have recently become a solid fan Milla Jovovich and her work, I was compelled to see this movie again. I remember from my younger days seeing this film and not understanding that it was intended to be an action/comedy! Let me just say, when it comes to any movie that leans more toward comedy than action, this movie does it all!

The acting is superb in this movie. Everyone plays their roles perfectly. Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, Bruce Willis, Milla Jovovich, Chris Tucker, and dare I say even... Luke Perry. A very solid cast that don't take themselves too seriously and just seem to have fun in the film!

Of course, we have Willis saving the world; along with Tucker as an inadvertent side-kick; and the love interest and connection with Jovovich! This movie tackles every major genre all in one! Action, comedy, adventure, romance, and sci-fi all wrapped up in a fun-filled "B" movie that has become a cult classic!

For a good time, see this movie! If not just for Gary Oldman doing an awesome job as the evil man from the south, and a very big former professional wrestler as the United States President!

3 out of 5 stars A change of heart.......2007-06-13

I first saw this film at the theater when it was first released. At the time, the slogan that went with it was "...go beyond Star Wars, go beyond Star Trek..."

Wow. That's a pretty bold statement. I had been a life long fan of both Star Trek and Star Wars as well us Luc Besson's previous work (Le Femme Nikita, and the masterful The Professional). I was really looking forward to this movie.

And then I was disappointed.

The film is visually stunning (obviously borrowing heavily from Blade Runner), but the movie was MUCH different than either Star Trek or Star Wars.

First of all, the film was VERY campy. It made no attempts to deliver a serious or believable story. Most of the characters delivered their lines as if they were all taking part in one huge inside joke.

Some of the cinematography was done is such a way that I felt as though I were watching an '80s rock video.

The special effects, however, are probably the biggest redeeming qualities of this film. They are absolutely impeccable. The costumes and set designs were very good as well.

But this movie could never even hope to hold a candle to the Star Wars or Star Trek franchise. It was more of a comedy than anything else.

To be quite honest, after I saw the movie.....I hated it.

Then came the VHS release. With some trepidation, I decided to rent it and give it another chance. This time, I knew what to expect. I knew that I wasn't going "beyond Star Trek" or "beyond Star Wars". I was able to watch the film a second time with no preconceived notions of what it was going to be like.....

.....and I actually ENJOYED it!

If taken for what it is (a sci-fi action-comedy), The Fifth Element is actually quite a well-crafted and executed little film. Just don't expect the film to deliver something better than what Star Wars or Star Trek has to offer.

I learned an important lesson from the marketing of this movie. It's best to go into a film without any ideas of what it will be like or what it SHOULD be like, despite what the advertisements may suggest.

All in all, I did buy a copy of the DVD for my collection and I do watch this movie from time to time. It's fun escapism, but Star Wars it's not.

5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Sci Fi Movies Ever.......2007-06-12

I would rank this movie up there with the top 10 greatest Sci Fi movies. Special effects...stupendous. Storyline...excellent. Casting, Acting, Costumes...all top notch. If you don't own this movie, you should purchase it NOW!!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, French guy!.......2007-05-29

This is it, folks. An actual apex of film making, as only a French guy could bring.

And let me attest to this now: It's been BROUGHT!

LEON is probably my favorite movie of all time, but this movie just goes off in directions that no other film has gone before. I have now idea how this film can be so funny, so tragic, so inspiring, and so sad all at the same time, but it does, and it does it well.

Do you know what I'm most thankful for? That they didn't make a sequel. I (usually) really hate sequels, and a sequel to this would have blown. If you've seen Starship Troopers 2, then you know what I'm talking about.

So what would Marc Antony do? DUH! He'd drop Cleopatra like a small pox scab and run off with Mila Jovivic! (is that how you spell her name?)

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorite movies.......2007-05-17

I love this movie, in fact I'm going to have to watch it again this week now that I have been reminded I have it. Oh yeah, superbit is pretty cool, but I bought the superbit version as a gift for my parents.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE this movie!!!.......2007-05-28

What can I say? Bruce Willis is at his best, and Milla, an actress, a model, and a singer, all in one, (no, not in the movie), brings her character to life in a beautiful way, like the unfurling of a rose.

The clincher for me was the character, Plavalaguna, the Diva, whose singing performance left me STUNNED. Granted, although I knew it was a bit tweaked, her vocal performance on stage, as well as her presence is enough alone to see this movie, if just to watch her perform "The Mad Scene" from the opera, "Lucia Di Lamamoor". A REAL twist on it, that one must see to experience.

5 out of 5 stars Blu-Ray all the WAY. Bruce Willis in 1080p.......2007-05-26

Blowing things up and the great space scenes can't be matched without 1080p. It's fun to watch over and over.

4 out of 5 stars I simply love the movie.......2007-05-19

Recently i bought a PS3 and one of the first movies i bought on Blu-ray was The Fifth Element.
It is by far not the best translation of a movie to the Blu-ray medium but i simply love this movie so much that i had to have it on Blu-ray!
The transfer of this movie to Blu-ray could be better but still it takes your breath away seeing it in a staggering true HD-resolution.
Sony says it is to re-release this movie after it's been remastered on July 17th so if you want it you could try to wait a few months before buying this masterpeace.
Since i live in The Netherlands and should only be able to watch region B blu-ray discs, i was very pleased to see that this movie ( region A )also could be played on my PS3 so i can buy some of the region A movies and still will be able to play them on a region B player!

4 out of 5 stars Fun movie. Good for HD........2007-05-14

This movie is not new, but holds it's value for HD viewing. I watched this movie in 1080i on 5.1 DPL. I have to express the greatness of watching action scenes in HD as well as with the surround sound. This movie doesn't let these effects escape. Horns, guns, screaming and whatnot surround the room. The picture is fun too. It's all colorful and sharp. This movie is one of those movies you can watch more than once too. Which helps after you buy it.

5 out of 5 stars Bruce Willis still dying hard in this film.......2007-04-11

Great movie of Bruce doing what Bruce does. Hey the guy is From Jersey. I had to give him 5 stars on this one.

First time I watched this it was one of those three star things that you could take or leave. Yes it had all the elements (except the fifth) that make for a good shoot-um-up space thing. But I just looked at it as an action movie.

For some reason this movie can grow on you and you find yourself anticipating the next move. Then you see things that you did not see the first time. Then you start to mouth the words. Soon this turns into a five star movie with a plot, good guys, bad guys, and good bad guys. Soon you start looking in your auto-wash to see if you left anything in there.

An ancient thereat of dome looms over the earth. An ancient religion keeps the secret of the doom and the secret of the defense (the fifth element.) Prophecy turns into reality and it is up to Major Koeben Dallas (Bruce Willis) to find the fifth element and save the earth.

Will he be able to do this and at what emotional expense?

Watching Gattaca will have anyone thinking about the current day and age of stem cell research and cloning. The title itself shows the intelligence of this movie. Not many would catch it, but the title is simply a word created to look like Genetic code, made up of the letters "G", "T", "A", and "C". Beyond all the scientific and ideological themes, there lies a wonderful "underdog" story in a world of streamlined genetic perfection. This is a must have for it's story, intelligence, and breathtaking appearance.

GATTACA

"I never saved anything for the swim back."

Well after ten years they have gone and done it. We now know how the genetic make-up of human beings. We also have electric cars and wrist radios. This is no longer sci-fi; it is speculative fiction. Or at least it is speculative. Anyway I have a friend that had a back problem in his youth. They left some dye in him and it was spotted during a job interview physical for a desk job; you guessed it.

Anyway this is a spectacular film. The sound track helped support the movie. They did a good job of picking the actors. The characters were believable. Uma did not even have to show her Thurman's. Ethan did a convincing transformation and Jude was good enough that you almost thought the film was about him. The scenes were breath taking. I was most impressed with the sunrise on the solar panels and the swim competition.

Two points to look for on your second viewing are:
1. Several times the brothers compete physically and logically. Even with his handicapped origin Ethan Hawke" Vincent Freeman" surpasses his brother Loren Dean "Anton."
2. Jude Law "Jerome Eugene Morrow" Was not without ambition. He was disappointed that his advantage was not advantageous enough for the gold and receives his gold thought the actions of Vincent.

Vincent who was conceived in the Rivera, as a love child must compete in a world where all the negative genetic dispositions are usually removed as was his brother's case. Vincent is tagged for failure at birth. To overcome this social barrier and obtain his goal of going into space, he borrows the genes of an athlete gone astray. The director where he is working (GATTACA) is killed as the last obstacle to the mission. Will Vincent be found out? Irene (Uma Thurman) suspects the number one candidate for the space trip Jerome of the murder. She never suspects that he is really Vincent.

Bottom line is if you aren't genetically correct the movie may scare you.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect marriage of sci-fi and comedy.......2006-10-28

The Fifth Element is one of Luc Besson's best (and easiest to watch) films. The director that brought us La Femme Nikita (the real thing, not the lame Bridget Fonda movie) and Léon reveals his true genius in this visually stunning movie. True, Luc Besson made some horribly bad action movies (did I mention the Transporter yet?) but here he builds a visually perfect creation and drives his lead actors to give superb performances. Milla Jovovich is stunning playing the perfect being (who better to play that role...) and Bruce Willis shows his amazing comic talent and perfect timing. Adding fabulous support roles by Gary Oldman (the perfect villain) and Chris Tucker completes the concussion and makes it fit for a king.

All in all, a highly entertaining movie that is thrilling, funny, and at some points quite profound. If you haven't seen it yet, there's not time better than now. Green?

Starship Troopers
In the first and finest RoboCop movie, director Paul Verhoeven combined near-future science fiction with a keen sense of social satire--not to mention enough high-velocity violence to satisfy even the most voracious bloodlust. In Starship Troopers, Verhoeven and RoboCop cowriter Ed Neumeier take inspired cues from Robert Heinlein's classic sci-fi novel to create a special-effects extravaganza that functions on multiple levels of entertainment. The film might be called "Melrose Place in Space," with its youthful cast of handsome guys and gorgeous women who look like they've been recruited (and in some cases they were) from the cast of Beverly Hills 90210. Viewers might focus on the incredible, graphically intense action sequences (definitely not for children) in which heavily armed forces from Earth go to off-world battle against vast hordes of alien "bugs" bent on planetary conquest. The attacking bugs are marvels of state-of-the-art special-effects technology, and the space battles are nothing short of spectacular. But Starship Troopers is more than a showcase for high-tech hardware and gigantic, flesh-ripping insects. Recalling his childhood in Holland during the Nazi occupation, Verhoeven turns this epic adventure into a scathingly funny satire of fascist propaganda, emphasizing Heinlein's underlying warning against the hazards of military conformity and the sickening realities of war. It's an action-packed joy ride if that's all you're looking for, but Verhoeven has a provocative agenda that makes Starship Troopers as smart as it is exciting. --Jeff Shannon

Starship Troopers

Not another bug movie!

In defense of our world, school kids from Argentina join the military upon graduation. Military service is required for full citizenship. During their term they learn their new environment and grow together or apart as they battle big bugs from outer space.

Yep it is another bug movie. And the bugs are big. Too bad for the people that read the book. There is no way to justify this movie to you.

However this is a great parity on military types with the grunts being boxy shaped faces and bodies to match, the elite being pointy accouterments. And the gung-ho getting their brains sucked out. This looks like a pilot for a TV series. Male associate soldiers were replaced with female soldiers who improved the shower scenes.

If you just have to take the 'Fascist Utopia' thing seriously then watch a serious movie where there is still a Paul sucked into the same situation by his teacher and others. All Quiet on the Western Front (1930).

Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Hong Kong wuxia films, or martial arts fantasies, traditionally squeeze poor acting, slapstick humor, and silly story lines between elaborate fight scenes in which characters can literally fly. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon has no shortage of breathtaking battles, but it also has the dramatic soul of a Greek tragedy and the sweep of an epic romance. This is the work of director Ang Lee, who fell in love with movies while watching wuxia films as a youngster and made Crouching Tiger as a tribute to the form. To elevate the genre above its B-movie roots and broaden its appeal, Lee did two important things. First, he assembled an all-star lineup of talent, joining the famous Asian actors Chow Yun-fat and Michelle Yeoh with the striking, charismatic newcomer Zhang Ziyi. Behind the scenes, Lee called upon cinematographer Peter Pau (The Killer, The Bride with White Hair) and legendary fight choreographer Yuen Wo-ping, best known outside Asia for his work on The Matrix. Second, in adapting the story from a Chinese pulp-fiction novel written by Wang Du Lu, Lee focused not on the pursuit of a legendary sword known as "The Green Destiny," but instead on the struggles of his female leads against social obligation. In his hands, the requisite fight scenes become another means of expressing the individual spirits of his characters and their conflicts with society and each other. The filming required an immense effort from all involved. Chow and Yeoh had to learn to speak Mandarin, which Lee insisted on using instead of Cantonese to achieve a more classic, lyrical feel. The astonishing battles between Jen (Zhang) and Yu Shu Lien (Yeoh) on the rooftops and Jen and Li Mu Bai (Chow) atop the branches of bamboo trees required weeks of excruciating wire and harness work (which in turn required meticulous "digital wire removal"). But the result is a seamless blend of action, romance, and social commentary in a populist film that, like its young star Zhang, soars with balletic grace and dignity. --Eugene Wei

The Fifth Element
--Geoff Riley

Desperado
It's Sergio Leone meets Sam Peckinpah meets Quentin Tarantino in this ultraviolent, mythological shoot-'em-up by auteur Robert Rodriguez. In Desperado, Rodriguez creates larger-than-life, genre-tweaking stock characters and puts them through their paces. As they stride bravely through an Old West lightly dusted with camp humor, they're periodically called upon to nimbly dodge bullets and fireballs through outrageously choreographed displays of Hollywood pyrotechnics. In this bigger-budget semi-remake/semi-sequel to Rodriguez's indie sensation, El Mariachi (made, famously, for $7,000), Antonio Banderas is the darkly charismatic El Mariachi, the Mysterious Stranger in town; Steve Buscemi is perfectly cast as his weasely, motor-mouth Comic Sidekick, laying the groundwork for El Mariachi's entrance by spinning saloon stories to build up his legend; Cheech Marin is a standout as the Bartender, who really knows how to handle a toothpick; and gorgeous Salma Hayek is, well, the Girl--treated to the kind of full-blown, slow-mo introduction the movies traditionally lavish on beautiful new stars. It doesn't add up to much, but it's a kick. --Jim Emerson

5 out of 5 stars Superbit review.......2002-04-20

Odds are you're reading this and wondering about Superbit and not about the movies themselves. If you just wanted the movie you'd just get the normal movie and save a few bucks, so I'll address the Superbit stuff here. Can you tell a difference? Yes. Is it dramatic? Sometimes. Sound quality is remarkable but only if your home theatre can render sound extremely well. On normal TV speakers you won't hear a difference. Picture quality is notably better *sometimes*. For example, in the Fifth Element during the taxi scenes or when LeeLoo is being reconstructed, or in Crouching Tiger in many of the outdoor scenes. Since Superbit by definition uses the entire disk for enhanced picture and sound, there are NO DVD extras included. For Fifth Element this is no different than from the regular DVD because it has no extras. Crouching Tiger is a different story. You may want to own both as the standard DVD is chock full of extras. If your DVD player is a computer, you'll need PLENTY of speed and memory to play these at full quality.

5 out of 5 stars Review of the DVD quality, not the movies........2001-11-27

Two of the movies included are fabulous, one is reasonably entertaining. But, you can read a review of these movies anywhere. I am giving my recommendation for this particular DVD set and the format. The picture and sound quality literally blew me off my chair. Above and beyond the quality of even the best DVD's I have seen, including Criterion collection discs of other movies. You won't get a lot of "extras" (scenes, bios, etc.) on these discs, but you do get the best experience watching the movie bar none, period, with these discs. If you spent the money on a surround sound receiver and large, flat screen TV, spend the money on these discs to justify the other, larger investments in your Home theatre you have made.
