This is the original motorcycle movie, starring Marlon Brando as the brooding leader of a biker gang that invades a small town. The film always looked like one of those synthetic Hollywood ideas of subculture life in the 1950s, which means it looks even more artificial today. But it is an actor's piece more than anything, and toward that end Brando's performance really is an important one in the context of his revolutionary reinvention of film acting during that decade. Directed by Lásló Benedek (Namu, the Killer Whale) and produced by the socially conscious Stanley Kramer. --Tom Keogh

One of the best action movies ever made, in a cleaned-up print restoring crucial parts of the story. No cavalry ever rode in with more epochal impact than the Wild Bunch in the legendary opening scene. Their steel-eyed leader, Pike (William Holden), and his robbers in stolen army uniforms help an old lady across the street, and then spark a massacre led by Pike's old crony Thornton (Robert Ryan), sprung from jail to hunt down his old gang. In just a few minutes, Sam Peckinpah sets the scene--a dusty Texas town in 1913--sketches a dozen vividly individualized characters, and choreographs one of the most realistic, influential, brilliantly photographed shootouts under the pitiless sun. The cast is superb (even Ernest Borgnine!), the dialog crackling, the bitterly ambiguous moral of the story hard-earned. It's the deeper, dark flip side to 1969's Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. Consider buying the letterbox Wild Bunch, the review collection Doing It Right, and the Peckinpah bio "If They Move... Kill 'Em!" --Tim Appelo

Description

Outlaws on the Mexican-U.S. frontier face the march of progress, the Mexican army and a gang of bounty hunters led by a former member while they plan a robbery of a U.S. army train. No one is innocent in this gritty tale of of desperation against changing times. Pump shotguns, machine guns and automobiles mix with horses and winchesters in this ultraviolent western.

4 out of 5 stars Bloody eye candy.......2007-07-03

This bloody extravaganza made Sam Peckinpah's reputation. A kind of fantasy of machismo set along the Texas-Mexico border around 1913--yes, very late for a Western--The Wild Bunch has thrilled adolescent boys and twentysomethings for almost four decades. The slowmo shots of horses falling awkwardly, of bodies squirting blood as they fall off of roof tops or cliffs, of tough hombres talking tough while they grab loose women and bottles of booze replete with numerous other bits of acrobatic mayhem amid some fantastic scenery makes this a non-cerebral feast for the eyes. The stars, William Holden (Pike Bishop), Ernest Borgnine (Dutch Engstrom), Robert Ryan (Deke Thornton), Edmund O'Brien (Freddie Sykes), etc. are first rate and on form. The plot is a variant of the old "one last job" story which begins with Pike's not-quite over-the-hill gang doing one last bank robbery.

Needless to say something goes wrong. Interspersed between the opening credits we see Pike's gang ride into town dressed as members of the US Army Calvary. On roof tops are some rascals and scallywags with rifles, missing teeth, and murderous gleams in their eyes. They are led by Deke Thornton, who it turns out is working for the railroad. What follows is a good old fashioned shoot 'em up of rather unlikely proportions as Pike's gang exists the bank with bags of loot, dodging and slinging bullets with abandon.

Turns out...well, no I won't say because I don't want to spoil the surprise. Suffice it to say, they need to do another job, this one a good old-fashioned train robbery with a few tricks and extras, like blowing up a bridge and running a locomotive at full throttle backwards. And then across the border into Mexico and some fun and games with Mexican generals, senoritas, banditos and such.

Been there, done that. But Peckinpah's colorful yarn has a few things you might not have seen before, and some of those things that you have seen, he did first and better. The Mexican color with a lot of authentic-looking extras doing authentic-looking Mexican activities was good. The fact that the Spanish spoken was not translated (and didn't need to be translated) was good. General Mapache (Emilio Fernandez) as the drunken, power-hungry warlord bandito was good. The kids feeding scorpions to the ants and then burning them was good. Edmund O'Brien as a degenerate Gabby Hayes kind of character was a hoot and a holler. But mostly this was about grim-faced men, toughened by long hours in saddle under the hot sun who, after decades of outlawing, finally ride gloriously into that last battle. Next stop: boot hill.

I watched the "original director's cut" that runs 145 minutes. At no time was my brain involved, but my eyes couldn't stop watching.

5 out of 5 stars The Wild Bunch.......2007-07-02

Maverick director Sam Peckinpah released this blood-soaked western ballet in 1969, at the height of the Vietnam War, igniting protests over his graphic depiction of violence. Yet some images, like the opening sequence of children watching a nest of fire ants attack a scorpion, have a cruel poetic force. Boasting a powerhouse veteran cast and virtually non-stop action, this mesmerizing film is not for the squeamish, but fans of pure western action and gunplay should cherish this pounding, hard-edged film.

3 out of 5 stars It's all been done before........2007-05-27

The Wild Bunch (Sam Peckinpah, 1969)

I will readily admit that my confusion over the prominence of The Wild Bunch in the annals of film criticism probably stems from my having bought into the hype. When I hear people wax poetic about the movie, one thing always comes to the surface sooner or later--the previously unheard-of level of violence in the movie. Here I was expecting something... different; even the tamest giallo lords it over The Wild Bunch in terms of violence. Mario Bava was doing it years before. What makes Peckinpah's opus so special? Not the violence.

The other thing that seems to come up often is that Peckinpah's version of the west is decidedly different than that which had been offered before, but again I head back to Italy, and this time flog the dead horse of Sergio Leone, whose westerns were riddled with grey areas long before this.

Okay, so Peckinpah was the first guy to do it in America. And it got John Wayne pretty mad. (But, really, he was already mad at Clint Eastwood for the Leone movies.) But from every other standpoint--plot, characters, pacing, cinematography, direction--Peckinpah has done better. (The pinnacle came three years later with Straw Dogs.) It's not bad, but don't go into it expecting one of the greatest films of all time, or you're bound to be disappointed. ***

1 out of 5 stars Not As Advertised-.......2007-04-20

For the third time in 10 years, I have purchased another copy of "The Wild Bunch". And for the third time in 10 years, I have been utterly disappointed. I don't know what all of these other reviewers watched in 1969, but what I watched was a much, much wilder bunch with much more grusome footage at the old Majestic Theater in downtown Dallas. Someone, apparently do gooders, had the film cut back to the bland piece of work that you see in this DVD. Someone should sue Warner Bros. for false advertising. I am still looking for the original film and would pay good money for it, if it even still exists. In the killings in the original film the bodies struck by bullets, immediately went to slow motion as a stream of blood shot from the bullet hole in the beginning murderous scene. There is only one brief shot of this type and the rest, a least a couple of dozen were cut out and are still cut out. Save your money, if you think your getting the original.

5 out of 5 stars Much more than just a violent film..........2007-04-06

This is one of the greatest Westerns ever made. Most people talk about its violence level. The violence here is incredible, and it's still strong and potent today. It shocked the living hell out of everyone back in 1969. It made some people vomit because it was so intense. However, while I do like the shootouts of this film, it's the depth that the characters have that really make this film stand out for me. Some of the speeches Pike gives are quite good, stressing that you stand by a man, and if you don't, you're like some animal, you're finished. Pike and the Bunch lived by these words, and in the end, they died by these words. They lived in a time where your word and your honor meant something, and you lived by a certain code that you tried to stay true to. Nowadays, this kind of message is seen as old fashioned and made fun of mercilessly. It shouldn't be. Despite the Bunch being criminals, they retain their sense of dignity at the end. Even Robert Ryan, Pike's former friend who is now chasing the Bunch, has a dignity as well, keeping his word to the bastard railroad men. But when he's finished with the posse, he stays in Mexico with the locals instead of returning to the US. You don't hate Ryan for what he's doing, and Pike doesn't hate him either. They each just want to live, and they got a job to do. The ending is one of the more poignant and brutal endings ever filmed. The Bunch got their bounty, and are whooping it up with the local whores. Angel had made a deal with them to keep one case of guns for his village, and they agreed. They told the general Mapache that they lost it on the trail. Mapache didn't believe them and accused Angel of stealing it, so the Bunch let him keep it. While the Bunch are drinking and partying, they stop and realise what they have to do. They go back and rescue Angel, not because they have to, but because they need to. They didn't want to abandon their friend. They probably knew they would be killed, and they didn't give a damn about it. I find this extraordinarily moving and quite powerful. After a decade of smug "irony", things like dignity and honor are punchlines. I don't think they are, and I never will. I really like the message of brotherhood and honor here, and I think this is a masterpiece....

5 out of 5 stars SUPERB !!! RIVITING 50'S BIKER FILM !!!.......2007-06-24

I strongly disagree with the previous negative reviews of "The Wild One".

I suppose if films were made during the pre-Victorian era, we would have reviews bashing them because most (any?) of the current reviewers did not live during those times and are unlikely to understand the dialog from those times!!!

I do agree the dialog will seem a bit "corny" when viewed in 2007, however
having lived through the 1950's, "Hipsters" or "Beatniks" were some of the only "cool" people around and they DID speak this way!

Please don't confuse this film with the actual "corny" "B" sci-fi junk films released in the 50"s

This film is the definitive landmark biker film of the 1950's era.
As high tech as possible using 50's tech.

Superb costumes, music, acting, dialog, editing!! Supreme crisp black & white filming!!

If you are a collector of biker/cult films, as I am, you collection IS NOT complete WITHOUT this movie!!!

This movie defined what generations of bikers would wear. Not a great plot, but pretty good for a 1950's film.

4 out of 5 stars "The Wild One" introduces the motorcycle as the symbol of youth rebellion..........2007-01-17

The 1950's was a period of review and questioning, as a new postwar generation sensed that much was wrong but could not grasp what it was nor offer any solution... It was, in fact, a generation with a sensitive exposed nerve that gave constant pain...

Marlon Brando, a young 'Method' actor (the "Method' was itself a manifestation of the times) began his film career with 'The Men' (1950) and continued with 'A Streetcar Named Desire' (1951), 'Viva Zapata' (1952) and 'Julius Caesar' (1953), all roles concerned with rebellion... Then, in 1953, he made 'The Wild One' and his rebel image crystallized...

Brando plays Johnny, leader of a motorcycle gang calling itself the Black Rebels, which terrorizes Wrightsville, a little American town...

The gang members release their frustrated emotions by racing, overturning a car, and by vicariously participating in a savage fight between Johnny and Chino (Lee Marvin), formerly a part of Johnny's gang but now a rival club...

Violence escalates when the town forms a vigilante committee, and inevitably there is an accidental killing... Johnny is saved from wrongful arrest by Kathie (Mary Murphy), a local girl who, in spite of herself, falls in love with him, as he does with her... She senses beneath his cruel exterior an innate gentleness, and is attracted by his sexuality, an element that was increasingly to become a factor in the evolution of the rebel hero...

Johnny and the gang finally leave town and life returns to normal, but many questions that the film poses were left unanswered...

Brooding, and compulsive, the film created a noisy tumult partly because it failed to show 'why' youths were this way, ending up, in the words of one critics "violent for violence's sake." However it is an important film... It reflected the problems of the period and it marked a step in the progress of the rebel hero... It also introduced the motorcycle as the symbol of youth rebellion foretelling such films as 'Wild Angels' (1966) and 'Easy Rider' (1969).

3 out of 5 stars I've had it with this jive, Daddy-O; I don't know where I'm going, I just GO.......2006-11-14

Marlon Brando's "The Wild One" from 1953 (black & white) could arguably be called the first biker flick, even though parts of the story/dialogue come off artificial, amusing and tame, especially compared to the first REAL biker flick, Peter Fonda's "The Wild Angels" from 1966.

THE STORY: Two bike gangs clash in Hollister, California, Marlon Brando's Black Rebels and Lee Marvin's The Beetles. (I'm not sure if Hollister is the name of the town in the film, but that's where it was actually shot; Hollister is about 70 miles SE of San Francisco).

WHAT WORKS: Needless to say, Marlon Brando is superb as the taciturn Black Rebels' leader. At the opposite end of the dispositional spectrum Lee Marvin is just as exquisite as the merry, fun-brawling leader of The Beetles. Mary Murphy is also very good as the cafe worker that shares a few romantic sparks with Brando.

Brando was 30 years old at the time of this picture's release, so it's not very appropriate that he's constantly referred to as "boy" in the film. Regardless, Marlon as the titular 'wild one' is definitely the prototype of Fonzy-like "cool," a full 2 years before James Dean's "Rebel Without a Cause" would materialize. His "Whaddaya got?" response to the question "What are you rebelling against?" is priceless, to say the least.

WHAT DOESN'T WORK: Although the plot is good (loosely based on a real event), the story's dramatic stagings and shifts, not to mention the trying-to-be-hip non-genuine lingo, provoke an amused "Yeah, right" response. Such phoniness will naturally hinder modern viewers from becoming enraptured by the story ("modern viewer" includes anyone who grew up on post-50s cinema -- i.e. mid-60s to the present).

Still, a couple of story elements work well, like the ending [minor SPOILER alert] when a police officer encourages Brando to thank Mary and her father; Marlon appears to try but ultimately maintains his silent 'cool' demeanor. Mary then responds, "It's okay, he doesn't know how." Although she's right, Brando comes back a day or so later to indeed express his thanks, albeit in a non-verbal manner.

BOTTOM LINE: If you're looking for a classic biker flick, don't expect "The Wild One" to remotely resemble the infamous late 60's/early 70's biker films, such as "The Wild Angels" or "Hell's Angels on Wheels." Keep in mind that cinematic "gritty realism" didn't come into vogue until the 60s. Hence, it should come as no surprise that "The Wild One" largely comes off as lame, tame, artificial and amusing, you know what I'm saying, Daddy-O? Still, Marlon Brando towers over the material and there are a few worthwhile qualities, as noted above. Needless to say, a must for Brando fans and those interested in classic cinema or amusing old-fashioned dialogue.

5 out of 5 stars Cute Bikes and Cute Kids in 1950's Inland California.......2006-08-27

Contrary to what is seen in the "clips", the film does contain
The Best Line in Film.

The old guy asks Brando "Where are you kids going, anyway?"

Brando: "You don't go anywhere, dad. You just go."

A lot of the film may appear quaint in a world where images of extreme violence, and unchecked self-interest are pervasive - I haven't seen it in well, something like 40 years. I remember it as being a bit dated even in the 60's. But, as a social document, I have a hard time believing that the gulf between what one reviewer here calls "the cast of the Blob" (a good and probably literally accurate ascription) or "Middle America" (as in What's Wrong with Kansas? or Schwarzeneggerville? - Hollister, CA, et al.) and those who seek the "open road", beats, bikers, and other souls who are able to recognize the source human freedom, is any closer to being bridged than it was back in those good ol' days, when we were more innocent and no less benighted.

Here's how director Sam Peckinpah described his motivation behind The Wild Bunch at the time of the film's 1969 release: "I was trying to tell a simple story about bad men in changing times. The Wild Bunch is simply what happens when killers go to Mexico. The strange thing is you feel a great sense of loss when these killers reach the end of the line." All of these statements are true, but they don't begin to cover the impact that Peckinpah's film had on the evolution of American movies. Now the film is most widely recognized as a milestone event in the escalation of screen violence, but that's a label of limited perspective. Of course, Peckinpah's bloody climactic gunfight became a masterfully directed, photographed, and edited ballet of graphic violence that transcended the conventional Western and moved into a slow-motion realm of pure cinematic intensity. But the film--surely one of the greatest Westerns ever made--is also a richly thematic tale of, as Peckinpah said, "bad men in changing times." The year is 1913 and the fading band of thieves known as the Wild Bunch (led by William Holden as Pike) decide to pull one last job before retirement. But an ambush foils their plans, and Peckinpah's film becomes an epic yet intimate tale of betrayed loyalties, tenacious rivalry, and the bunch's dogged determination to maintain their fading code of honor among thieves. The 144-minute director's cut enhances the theme of male bonding that recurs in many of Peckinpah's films, restoring deleted scenes to deepen the viewer's understanding of the friendship turned rivalry between Pike and his former friend Deke Thornton (Robert Ryan), who now leads a posse in pursuit of the bunch, a dimension that adds resonance to an already classic American film. The Wild Bunch is a masterpiece that should not be defined strictly in terms of its violence, but as a story of mythic proportion, brimming with rich characters and dialogue and the bittersweet irony of outlaw traditions on the wane. --Jeff Shannon

5 out of 5 stars National Geographic Wildlife - Best of the best!.......2007-06-28

I am an advid collector/viewer of the world's wildlife.
As a nature conservationist, I believe the current National Geographic Series of Wild Chronicles which depict animals in the wild should be very interesting to both students and grownups. We need to conserve our wonderful wildlife all over the world when the pressure of increasing human population, global warming and the fast-dwindling forests have created conditions that are so adversed to all existing mammals, particularly in the savannah regions of Africa, the rainforests of Asia and the Amazon land mass in South America.
I highly recommend the National Geographic Wild Chronicles to those of us who cheerish the suvivability and sustainability of these animals in the face of adverse changes around the global. They could be here today and who knows if they still could make it tomorrow. Hence, these chronicles would serve as a permanent record of the fabulous wildlife on Planet Earth. So go for the series while stock lasts.
Cheers.

If you didn't know better, you'd think that the masterminds behind Whose Line Is It Anyway? and Chicago's Second City improv troupe plotted to create Nick Cannon Presents: Wild 'N Out Season One, one of MTV's highest-rated shows. On each episode of Wild 'N Out, two comedic teams are pitted against each other. The Red Squad is led by the charismatic Cannon, who's also a film and recording star. The Black Squad is fronted by celebrity guests predominantly of the hip-hop and rap kind (Kanye West, Method Man, Rev Run of Run-DMC). Each participant has to outdo his opposing team members. Sometimes they're given props to work with. Most of the time, they rely only on their imaginations.

The highlight of each episode is the WildStyle segment in which opposing team members freestyle against each other. Some of their rhymes fall into the "your mama" category. But others are better crafted and no one--not even Cannon--is immune to being taken down a few pegs. The impish Mikey Day is particularly fond of needling his employer: "You're our boss, you're a talented kid / I saw Love Don't Cost A Thing, too bad nobody else did." Castmate Rasika Mathur often is the target of rhymes slamming her Indian heritage, but she has the fortitude and skill to verbally annihilate her offenders. One of the best extras in this set is an extended WildStyle, including hilarious and often biting exchanges that were cut from the original airing.

The musical performances aren't included on this boxed set, but--occasional awkward editing aside--that's not a negative. The frustrating aspect, though, is that while the DVD is touted as an uncensored release, there's so much bleeping during some segments that viewers can only guess at what the players are saying. --Jae-Ha Kim

    3 out of 5 stars not what i expected.......2006-08-24

I have absolutely nothing bad to say about the show itself. I love this show, and watch it every chance I get. I bought the "UNCENSORED" First Season of the show, because I got tired of all the bleeps during the show on TV. Well this is the most censored-uncensored show I have ever seen. They bleep just as much out during the UNCENSORED DVD, as they do in the show.

    5 out of 5 stars Good show.......2006-06-16

This show is really funny. I would recommend this show to anyone who wants to have a good laugh. People with good sense of humor will really like this show. The show can be watched live.

3 out of 5 stars Very enjoyable... [BUT]... could've been ALOT better!.......2006-04-12

I know it's been a common complaint among users, but yeah it bugged me enough to put out my two cents in. When i purchased the DVD box, i expected UNCENSORED performances. Since the vast majority of the comedy is verbal, it's upsetting when you don't know what the comedians are saying with their punch-lines being bleeped out. It leaves you trying to figure out the missing lines which COMPLETELY defeats the purpose of watching improv comedy.

Moreover, the missing musical acts takes alot away from the show, too. As soon as the final act/game is over, it cuts out leaving the showing feeling like it's been rushed toward completion. On top of that, i'd really really like to SEE some of these acts (ie. T.I., Cassidy) so why the HECK not?!

To sum things up.. it was a GREAT watch. Some really funny stuff, and decent extras... but why not get the WHOLE deal when you pay the price for just that? In the end... i still feel deceived and ripped off.

    Boo nick cannon. Boo.

Nick, you're so funny on Wild and Out, your show is the most hilarious on the planet. I like Affion Crockett and DeRay Davis and with such a funny show, my class wants me on, since they think I'm $O funny. Your DVD is really good, and I can't wait until season 2. Wild and out is not comedy or reality. It's a reality that it has such good comedy. Who're you going to have in season 3?

4 out of 5 stars A review on Wild and out DVD season 1 uncenscored.......2006-03-30

Wild and out is illest improv comedy from downtown L.A.'s top of the charts. It is recommended. Now if you want to buy it for your kids, you may re-consider it. It has some racism and if you're 14 or younger you might consider watching it with your parents. OR I guess you can be mature. Sometimes people get naked too. So as an uncenscored DVD some content is not appropriate for your children. I still recommend you buying it. If you like gotham comedy, the funniest on the planet.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best double packs around.......2007-01-04

Unlike a lot of other bundles around, this one is actually worthwhile. Say what you like about Brando, but there was a time when he was doing something with acting that has rarely been seen since. I believe the reason Brando was so good in those early years was because he was just so excited by the possibilities and of his own talent. But the problem with genius is it soon gets bored..

Regardless, On The Waterfront is brilliant - mostly due to Brando, but also his co-stars. It's such a shame Brando couldn't get past his ego and not sit with Steiger for Steiger's closeups in their famous car scene - because Steiger's role and character's story is as important as Brando's.

The Wild One is a lovely snap-shot of 'middle' America caught in the grip of hysteria about youth that has happened again and again throughout history. This time it's those crazed potheads and drunks riding their motorcycles, refusing to call people "Sir", and questioning authority. Forgot about Brando's reply of "Whaddya got?", look for the moments where he shows fragility - there's the magic. Not in the same class as Streetcar or Waterfront - but along with those two it forms a tight trilogy of films that should be in every collection.

        Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good show, poor DVD quality - for die-hard fans only!.......2005-04-18

This DVD has two major drawbacks in quality department - poor sound and weird video editing. Individual instruments are lost in audio mix, Suzi's bass can be heard only during her solo, and all in all one can hardly hear treble or bass - only middle range frequencies.

The video editing is done MTV-style: quick takes, fast cuts preventing to see what's going on, no long shots, if there are some close-ups, they are really close - only the face is seen. I've got an impression that the camera man got some new modern equipment and he tried every trick in the book with it, while the editor decided that several different shots per second is quite normal for live rock performance. As a result after 5 minutes of this video motley my eyes got tired, and very soon I've got a real headache!

Artists like Suzi do not need all this modern video extravaganza - her music is a little bit old-fashioned (and we love her for this!), and her show should be shot accordingly. The show itself was quite good, and it can be seen in the second half of the program when the editor slows down a little bit and allows us to see the performance (at last!).

As for b/w archive footage and old video footage embedded by the editor into the show itself, frankly I would prefer to see it in bonus materials: complete versions of old videos and archive footage.

Five stars for the show and only one star for DVD quality ends in resultant three stars.

5 out of 5 stars REAL LIVE ROCK SHOW.......2005-03-25

The thing that disappointed me is that this dvd is...too short.
Great Quatro live performace. Rock Hard is better live than the studio version; the Can The Can intro, where Quatro plays drum solo, is fantastic and only this, worth the price of this dvd.
Very good version of: She's in love with you, Stumblin'in.
The Quatro' bass solo, also is good, very good.
This a real live concert, with real players nothing has been changed in studio, like it happens in many live shows put in cd or dvd.
It's a dvd for people who like real rock.

3 out of 5 stars Bon, mais un peu moyen.......2004-12-02

Les titres: The Wild One, Rock Hard, Can The Can, 48 Crash, Stumblin in, She's in love with you, Tear me appart, If you can give me love Glycerine queen Devil Gate drive (dans le desorde) Voila un appercu d'un concert actuel de Suzi Quatro.

If you want contact me, no problem. I'm a fan of Suzi Quatro
