3 out of 5 stars shiny black armour.......2007-05-17

Wow this movie is.. Interesting.

I bought it just for completeness really, its nothing like the tv show. Pretty much the only good thing in the entire film is the dudes with the shiny black armour, I think they're skeletors minions or something and they're cool. Pity he-man kills like 500 of them at a time.

3 out of 5 stars Could've Done Better But An OK Attempt.......2007-05-07

Masters of the Universe. A movie with He-Man in it would have been something beyond my wildest dreams. I'm saddened to say I was fairly disappointed with this live action version. The plot line was alright, scattered at best but okay. Some of the new characters brought in were atrocious. Gwildor I am sorry to say could have been left out of it. But considering back when this version was made, the special effects and the budget just wouldn't allow for the inclusion of Orko. Blade was cool in the fact it gave He-Man another swordsman to duel with. Karg should have been left out of it.

He-Man was definitely not a role meant for Dolph Lundgren I'm sorry again. Lundgren did fine in Rocky 4 but when it came to something like this where He-Man's speech should have been constant throughout the movie, just dimmed it. Lundgren spoke little if nil throughout the picture.

Frank Langella stole the whole show as Skeletor and rightly so. It's fairly disconcerting when I actually dug the bad guy more than my favorite good guy. A great choice by director Gary Goddard not to hinder Langella's acting by making him wear a flat out mask. Incorporating the prosthetics into his facial features was monument in making Skeletor a memorable baddie.

Meg Foster, whom folks may recognize from Hercules: The Legendary Journeys and Xena: Warrior Princess, I thought did exceptional as Evil Lyn. My only complaint about the Evil Lyn character was that she never that I could see, showed her powers in the movie. Skeletor at least got to perform that sick looking wound thing as well as his "Godlike" powers towards the end of the movie, but nothing for Evil Lyn??? For shame Goddard, for shame!

Of course we have Courtney Cox Arquette now, who just recently gained fame for her role as Monica on Friends, debuting as Julie Winston. James Tolkan who people saw in Top Gun, playing Det. Lubic. Robert Duncan Macneill who folks remember as Tom Paris in Star Trek Voyager, playing Kevin Corrigan. Chelsea Field who folks saw in movies such as Andre, playing Teela. Christina Pickles, whom we saw in George Of The Jungle and The Wedding Singer, played the Sorceress. And of course Billy Barty, whom we saw in movies such as Legend and the Weird Al movie UHF.

In other aspects I must say the Power Sword looked brilliant, the laser effects and the final duel between He-Man and Skeletor had a decent amount of zing. And the graphics and music that were associated with the Cosmic Key were interesting and appropriate I think. Kudos to Bill Conti of Rocky fame who contributed to the orchestral soundtrack and themes for the movie.

All in all with a movie like this I can understand why studios and distributors now tend to shy away from a more updated telling of the He-Man lore. With the re-release of the cartoons on DVD and the popular demand that followed, the reigniting flame for the He-Man film has never been more warranted. This movie is still no matter what worth purchasing because of it's part in the He-Man movie/cartoon legacy and collection, but it's not an extremely good movie in my opinion. Maybe he should have gotten a few more pointers from Superman director and savior Bryan Singer.

Does Dolph Lundgren truly have the power???? I dont think so.

5 out of 5 stars Long live Skeletor!.......2007-04-10

Wow! I remember this movie. I saw it as a kid, huddled in a friend's house and it was the best thing ever! As an adult, I admit, it's cheesy. Well, so was the cartoon it's based off of. But it's a good kind of cheese.

I never watched it for He-Man, Man-at-Arms, Teela, or any of the good guys. Heck no! I was a fanatic over the bad guys. Skeletor was my hero. Growing up, I didn't want to be She-Ra or Teela or anyone like that. I wanted to be Evil-Lyn.

In that aspect, this movie didn't fail. With the PG rating, Skeletor was able to be far eviler then his cartoon counterpart. He was no longer the fumbling fool and comidic device that we saw on Saterday morning. This was who Skeletor was meant to be; evil, cunning and down-right sadistic. He outshone He-Man and the other Masters. He was the best part of the movie!

Also, the audio commentary on the DVD is great and really helps understand what was going on back then and give you an insight in the mind of the creators.

5 out of 5 stars Pure Fun.......2007-04-01

I dont remember watching He Man growing up, but I think I saw this movie. I watched this movie without thinking it would be anything speical, and I was wrong. The preview really drew me into the movie before I watched it. It was pure fun, and an excellent sci fi movie. Dolph Lundgreen was the main source for finding this movie, thanks Dolph! Where the heck are you these days? I didnt check all reviews but at the very, very end of the movie Skeltor comes on and says "I'll be back". Ha! Guess that movie never happened.

3 out of 5 stars Great cheesy eighties fun.......2007-03-26

Heman, one of my favorite childhood cartoon heros brings the battle to earth on the bigscreen. Fun movie, not a great work of art, but good cheesy eighties fun. Plus, Courtney cox when she was actually pretty hot.

Don't expect an epic, this is Conan the Barbarian for kids.

He-Man and the Masters of the Universe makes its debut on DVD in a robust collector's set, filled with extras any fan would enjoy. Part one of season one contains a whopping 33 episodes, following the hulky, well-tanned muscleman who masquerades as the irresponsible, goofy Prince Adam by day. The secret of He-Man's dual identity is only shared by The Sorceress (who's only powerful so long as she remains near Castle Greyskull, where she lives), Man-At-Arms (the king's gadget specialist) and Orko, a floating creature whose backwards magic spells often leave everyone with egg on their face (literally). He-Man's legacy was also its focus on family values, illustrated at the end of each episode through a moral lesson given by one of the characters. They range from the useful (Don't judge people by their looks) to the somewhat trite (When you're sad, sing a song). He-Man's nemesis, the wizard Skeletor, remains a fan favorite, accompanied by his motley crew of sidekicks: Beastman, Evil-Lyn, Merman, and Tri-Clops. There's even a little room for romance, though any flirtation between Adam/He-Man and the overeager captain of the guard, Teela, is usually restricted to jealous looks when the other receives the attentions of an outsider.

Memorable episodes include "Teela's Quest," in which she discovers her real mother is The Sorceress; "A Friend in Need," a drugs allegory where an insecure (and very scantily-clad) woman becomes addicted to a potion that makes her confident; "Song of Celice," where a woman's powerful singing voice is exploited by Skeletor to conquer Greyskull; and "Prince Adam No More," in which Adam struggles with seeking approval from his father, King Randor. A new behind-the-scenes documentary reveals insight into the series's launch as the inaugural first-run syndicated cartoon; the creators's encounter with a fresh-off-Conan-the-Barbarian star Arnold Schwarzenegger at a convention ("He looked at our drawings … and was ticked off," recalls creator Lou Scheimer). There's also a featurette in which producers and animators discuss individual episodes, animated storyboards, and scripts. Best of all, the spine of the DVD box (along with seven other He-Man and She-Ra related DVDs) creates a mural of Castle Greyskull and the Crystal Castle. --Ellen A. Kim

5 out of 5 stars 1980's Saturday morning cartoons at their best!.......2007-06-03

Man, this takes me back. The weekends were really something to look forward to for the children of the 1980's. I feel bad for kids today. These weekends you will find more infomercials then cartoons, and the few cartoons that are on are lame.

I wasn't sure how this show would be after so many years, and I'm ofcourse much older now. After finishing the entire volume 1 of season 1, I have to say that I still enjoy He-man. The characters are really good, the stories are really interesting, and the moral lessons at the end are really good for kids. I especially like the rivalry between Skeletor and He-man. I especially enjoy He-mans funny one linners.

I also appreciate the quality that went into these sets. The bonuses are pretty good. The only thing that dissapoints me is the Bios. I was hoping they would show photographs of the toys.

3 out of 5 stars scratched disks.......2007-03-09

I ordered the Heman Vol.1 DVD series new. When i opened the packaged two of the disks were loose. Two episodes on two disks skip. This was a gift and the exchange policy is a hassel. I would not order DVD's from Amazon again.

5 out of 5 stars By the power of...!.......2007-02-26

This was one of a handful of cartoons I watched faithfully as a five year-old. At the time He-man was my undisputed favorite character.

Anyway, before I learned this series had been released I would watch snipets on youtube and it definitly made me nostalgic for the real thing.

I got the 10 best of episodes for my birthday. I continue to be impressed with the effort they put into releasing these. The packaging is gorgeous (which normally i don't care about, but with toys and music--stuff you're going to hold onto and look at--this is really eye candy. They include collectors cards by guys like bill sienkiewicz who didn't work on the show but are amazing illustrators. I really want to own all of them b/c they're so original.

Subsequently I got the season 1/part 1 and it's been a real treat. There's 5 dvd's full of episodes (I think 30 total) and one DVD with just extra's, mostly interviews of key folks who developed and wrote/illustarted the show. They really put into perspective how significant the show was to animation and tv--you just have to watch it.

So I highly recommend this. Even my girlfriend gets excited about watching two or so episodes before bed.

4 out of 5 stars Good for a laugh.......2007-02-24

Its funny to look back on the cartoons you loved as a kid and wonder why they captivated you so much. Watching it now, I'm really not sure why. Now its just hilarious. The dialogue is terrible and the amount of overtly homoeroticsm in these cartoons boils way over the top. There's one part where robotic villian, Lockjaw, struggles to find a suitable weapon for his detachable arm, and in doing so makes grunting noises and rapidly moves his arm up and down, which looks alot like a struggle of a much different kind. Just one example. I mean, c'mon! Look at Prince Adam's or He-Man's attire! Pink shirt and Purple leotards! Furry short shorts with boots! Shoulder length blond hair! Then you go through the special features and hear the creator talk, you can definitely see that the guy is gay. I mean, no problem with that, it just adds to the comedy of it all. If you have a sense of humor about these kind of things, than this cartoon is for you.

5 out of 5 stars He-Man and the Masters of the Universe Season 2 Vol. 2.......2007-04-07

This is the last volume of this series, not including the spin- off She-Ra Princess of Power. This show is still one of the best children's stories ever made. It is an action adventure, that also teaches different leasons. These include moral (ethical), the importance of learning, and the fact that anyone can do or be anything they want, if they try.
I enjoy it now, as much as I did when I first saw it in the 1980s. It has not lost a thing. It is great for family viewing.

4 out of 5 stars He-Man season 2 volume 2.......2007-04-03

This wraps up the He-Man series completely, giving you the last half of Season 2.
The animation is high quality, produced by Filmation in the 1980s. The packaging is well designed. If you buy all four volumes of seasons 1&2, the DVD boxes will sit side by side on your shelves making up a nice pictorial display on the covers.
Now I anxiously hope for She-Ra season 2 as well. If they release that, the entire He-Man and She-Ra output from Filmation in the 1980s will be available on DVD.

3 out of 5 stars My he-ma insight.......2007-02-03

As far as the whole He-Man series goes there are several episodes that I don't remember and to say the least from what I do remember it wasn't a bad show. Some of the fissures should have been worked out of before the episodes were aired. But hey nothing's perfect.

[My most memorable charcters for me were Orko, Evil-in and The Sorceress]

The most disturbing thing I found was the lack of reference to his sister through out the serious. For those who did not keep up with She-Ra Princess of Power that is his sister. I think it was mostly due to the possibility that He-Man serious of the late 80s was already at an end by the time She-Ra started. (as far as the writing goes)

King Randor had two babies, a set of twins Prince Adam and Princess Adora. (He -Man and She-Ra) On the show I watched He-Man appeared quite often but she never appeared on He-Man so it was kind of like they never bothered to include her fighting along his side from time to time. Maybe the writers didn't think it was wise to write her in at least sometime into the second year, I don't know. But I'll have to include it into my collection. You shouldn't have one without the other you know.

5 out of 5 stars So happy!.......2007-01-13

This was my last purchase from this series/boxed set and I'm thrilled with each and every one of them. An item I'm proud having on my bookshelf!

5 out of 5 stars Very nice quality!.......2007-05-15

I was in college when this show was big (early 1980s) but my little brother (13 years my junior) loved it. I bought this DVD set for hit birthday recently. Huge hit. I was impressed with quality of the video and sound. Well worth the price. The little moral 'lesson' at the end of each cartoon was a nice touch. Too bad this is kind of thing is forgotton today in our world of anger and hard satire.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful alternative to buying the complete seasons.......2007-01-11

Just enough to reminiscence

My son, 7yrs old, actually pointed this out to me awhile ago, and I'm glad he did. Being a child of the 80's this was one of my go to after-school shows...always loved looking for Orko during the episode. Anyway, if your planning on buying the completed seasons don't get this. The episodes on this "best of" will be in those box sets. However, if you want a few good hours, 2 discs, to remember the days of He-Man then this is more than enough to quench that thirst for a trip down memory lane.

An excellent buy and a well produced product with hard plastic sleeves. You will get a chance to see most of your favorite allies and foes with this sampling. This is a wonderful alternative to buying the complete seasons...perfect!

5 out of 5 stars "CLASS A" DVD.......2006-08-18

5 out of 5 stars In retrospect ..........2006-03-08

There was an awful lot of sexual tension between He-Man and TeeLa but unfortunately this series went off the air before that relationship could go further (LOL).

Seriously though, awesome cartoon series. I grew up watching shows like this one, Transformer's, Voltron and Thundercats.

This show had surprisingly great writing with good action and tangible plots given what passes for "good" cartoons these days.

The "EvilSeed" episode is my all-time favorite ... it also makes a good point that sometimes you have to put aside differences and beef with your perceived enemies to bring about the greater good.

Cartoons now lack the moral center that the 1980s classics seemed to project.

Highly recommended purchase for 80s cartoon & action cartoon fans.

He-Man would take apart Johnny Bravo, Jimmy Neutron and all of the other cartoon heroes kids think are cool today!

This DVD set is one I plan on showing my kids.

Amazon was recommending The Thundercats to me and I wrote a review saying there was a show I wasted god knows how much time watching in my 20's along with He Man, and after I post the review, Amazon recommends He Man to me! I liked He Man, animation was horrid but when He Man would say "I have the power!" (I think he said that), you knew he was gonna kick some skeleton ass! I even dug the freakin movie, thats how much I liked He Man. Would I purchase He Man on dvd? No freakin way, my adult friends would laugh their butts off if they saw that in my house and there'd be no way I could tell them it was for my kids, no one would buy that. I Have the POWER!!!!! I hated when VH1 was saying this show was gay, I thought it rocked! OK well, maybe the dope I was smokin clouded my judgement, lol.

Product Description

Though it aired for only two seasons, the classic 1980s cartoon series HE-MAN AND THE MASTERS OF THE UNIVERSE remains a nostalgic favorite of anyone who grew up in the Reagan era. Originally created to sell a line of action figures, the syndicated series transcended its toy-tie-in roots with imaginative storytelling, hand-drawn animation, and an adroit blend of action, fantasy, and science-fiction.

The series follows the mythical adventures of a mild-mannered royal whose magic sword transforms him into a loinclothed, Prince Valiant-coiffed muscleman known as He-Man, the most powerful being in the universe. Together with a loyal band of followers--including his pet tiger, Cringer; his man-at-arms, Duncan; the beautiful captain of the guards, Teela; a cloaked floating magician, Orko; and his winged mentor, Sorceress--He-Man fights to protect the magically-powered Castle Greyskull from the evil clutches of his skull-faced nemesis, Skeletor, who presides over his own army of supervillains. This collection presents the first half of the second season with episodes 66 through 98.

4 out of 5 stars He-Man season 2 volume 1.......2007-04-03

I was glad to see this come out. I've never seen the second season on TV, as I had to prioritize my studying at the time it was on.
He-Man and Skeletor are continuing their beautifully animated battle of good vs evil in Eternia.
Buy all four volumes of season 1 and 2 and stack them side by side on your shelves to enjoy the picture the covers make. Without giving anything away, you can look forward to a good set of extras too.
I'm hanging out in hope that they'll release She-Ra season 2 this year as the obvious follow-up to this.

5 out of 5 stars he-man still rules 20 years later!!!.......2007-03-10

I, like everyone else grew up on he-man. once I found out they were on dvd I had to have it. watching them now on dvd has made me love it even more than ever! this dvd is just another must-have. if you like he-man then there is no excuse not to buy it! trust me the episode and sound quality are excellent, theres tons of bonus features and 2 collectible cards too. this dvd set is guaranteed to bring a smile to your face! amazon has an excellent guarantee also, if you have a problem with it. I have all of the dvd sets and so far a couple of them have not played correctly. certain episodes skip even though there is no scratches on the disk. they have done it since new. amazon had no trouble exchanging it hassle free for me, and in fact this set was an exchange! dont be discouraged though, theyre still totally worth buying!

5 out of 5 stars Holds up well, even after all this time.......2007-02-11

This set was put together by people who love the series. Not only do we get to watch the episodes but the extras give more background and insight into the people behind the scenes. Money well spent!

5 out of 5 stars Dingo de Antología III.......2007-01-10

2 out of 5 stars The Region 2 Version.......2006-11-14

This isn't a bootleg... it's the Region 2 version (PAL), which seem to release some series before Region One (such as the Region 4 Smurf releases)
This is volume # 4 in the region 2 release of the series. It's okay, but only has a limited number of episodes on the disc. Unless if you have a region free dvd player, this DVD will not work for you.

1 out of 5 stars This DVD is a bootleg.......2006-10-28

This is obviously a bootleg product, because this series is not officially available on DVD yet. Save your money for when the real version comes out and don't enrich someone who knows how to make a DVD burner work.
