A confident hybrid of M*A*S*H, Treasure of the Sierra Madre, and Dr. Strangelove, Three Kings is one of the most seriously funny war movies ever made. Improving the premise of Kelly's Heroes with scathing intelligence, it explores the odd connection between war and consumerism in the age of Humvees and cellular phones. Writer-director David O. Russell's third film (after Spanking the Monkey and Flirting with Disaster), it's a no-holds-barred portrait of personal conscience in the volatile arena of politics, played out by one of the most gifted filmmakers to emerge in the 1990s.
George Clooney, Mark Wahlberg, Ice Cube, and Spike Jonze (director of Being John Malkovich) play a quartet of U.S. soldiers who, disillusioned by Operation Desert Storm, decide to steal $23 million in gold hijacked from Kuwait by Saddam Hussein's army. Getting the bullion out of an Iraqi stronghold is easy; keeping it is a potentially lethal proposition. By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Iraqi rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy. This is serious stuff indeed, but Russell infuses Three Kings with a keen sense of the absurd, and the entire film is an exercise in breathtaking visual ingenuity. Despite a conventional ending that's mildly disappointing for such a brashly original film, Three Kings conveys the brutal madness of war while making you laugh out loud at the insanity. --Jeff Shannon

Clever, funny and different.......2007-06-23
David O. Russel's 'Three Kings' is a hard film to lock down into a particular genre. It combines elements of a war movie, a comedy and a drama, and manages to do it very well. People wanting to see lots of big guns and bombs should stay well clear, there are video games to keep you amused. Anyone who appreciates witty, clever and slightly off beat films is well advised to see it.
Telling the untold story of the Gulf War, with Saddam's army more worried about shooting rebel Iraqis then allied soldiers, was a brave move in Hollywood, because many people don't want to know that a democratic uprising in Iraq was being crushed while the Allies sat by in the desert. Rather than being an action movie, the film develops into an exploration of three soldiers and the human development caused by their experience of the war, and the extraordinary circumstances they place themselves in.
Many innovative and experimental cinematic styles are used nicely, and solid performances are recorded by Clooney, Wahlberg, Jonze and Cube. The characters are portrayed as normal human beings, both noble and flawed at the same time, and even the Iraqi soldiers are seen as people rather than typical war movie bad guy cannon fodder. This film genuinely showed me the desperation felt by many Iraqis for the Allies to help them as they starved and fought desperately against Saddam.
One of my favorite films, and probably one of the most underrated films of its time
Don't like Clooney, what are you Looney?.......2007-05-13
Sorry about the title, Three kings was not a movie I chose to see on the big screen. My wife recommended it and I found it was an entertaining flick. Not a desert storm movie like Jar Heads, a different take on an old story line.
Interesting Adventure film set In Iraq after Gulf War 1.......2007-04-09
A group of Gi's in Kuwait following the first Gulf War find a map on a prisoner that leads them back across the border on a gold hunt. The country is in a state of chaos with Sadam's soldiers taking their revenge on anti- Sadam citizens. The GI's get caught up in a more complicated situation with refugees then they planned on.
Well conceived and written with excellent special effects, this is a hard movie to categorize. It's sort of Oceans 11 goes to Iraq, A combination military adventure/heist movie with some interesting social commentary and moralizing thrown in.
All three of the principal actors do a good job but Ice Cube is particularly good in this. George Clooney and Mark Wahlberg are fine in their respective roles.
Definitely entertaining and different.
Good movie.......2007-03-30
This is a good movie that starts out as an adventure and slowly changes into a morality movie. I like it and think its setting is contemporary and timely.
Very ordinary..........2007-03-23
This was a critically lauded film, so when I went in, I had high expectations. Roger Ebert himself called it a masterpiece. I saw it, and it was certainly interesting, but I immediately forgot about it right after I left the theater. There really isn't much depth here. It's more reminiscent of getting a quick rush from something, then after it wears off, you don't even remember how you felt afterwards. I remember a scene where a cow is blown up, but other than that, it's hard for me to remember anything about it. It ultimately was very ordinary, and not a really deep film about war.

The End that came too soon.......2007-02-21
Where to begin with this. Well first I don't actually own the box set but i do own the uncut dvds. Also as expected if you haven't watched the last hundred forty episodes that are prior to this box set you'll be completely lost so don't even try it. This series is not for kids, there are demons, grotesc death, people being beat to death that kind of thing, so keep this out of the hand of the kiddes.
Now then where to begin. Yu yu hakusho is one of those rare series that run over a hundred episodes and still hasn't run out of steam by the end of the series. As the last season of one of the greatest anime ever it finally reveals that past of two of the main chacters. All though one of the main characters is mia for most of the season, it actually works better that way. it gives a full explaination for everyone's action and their future leaving really no question unanswered, though leaves some things open for a sequal, someday maybe.
Now then onto the actual review. The animation is some of the best you can find for the time peroid but it is nearly ten years old so don't be expecting yourself to be dazzeled. The music is flawless as are the sound effects. The voice acting really couldn't get better each fit their characters perfecty, as to be expected by this time. The story is one of the most interesting and intricate i've ever seen. The action is on par with pre-Majinboo DBZ,in other words some of the best you will find any where in any genre. Character design is well done and it's pretty easy to conect on a personal level with each character. The series is more or less perfect and the three kings saga is the best out of the entire series as a final season should be.
In all if you have the money, like action shows and have seen the rest of the series then buy this one youy won't regret it. If you don't own the rest of the series go b8uy it, yes there five or six box sets for $60 each but its well worth the money.
A great saga. .......2006-06-06
As a die-hard YYH fan, I can say that this saga delivers an incredible, yet, bittersweet end to this great anime. Great story, great animation, and particularly tremendous action -- a must for YYH fans.
A Good Ending To A Good Series.......2006-04-27
Okay, this is a good ending to a good series. Why did I only give it 3 stars well:
Pros: great info into the characters pasts, good animation for the day(1992-1995), good back story, a good ending to a good series, more grey than simply good and evil.
Cons: Horrible chiches and annoying concepts (i.e. flying, energy blasts, speed lines, etc.), some lazy/spotty animation, tournament concept feels very overplayed after dark tounement, series kind of hard to get into at this point.
Though, regularly I'd give it 4 or 5 stars, the cons defatly outwheigh the pros and to be honest I really wouldn't recomend it to anyone who doesn't already like the series.
I Promised Myself I Wouldn't Cry..........2006-04-17
I'll be the first to admit my bias in this review: I am a die hard Yu Yu Hakusho fan, with fanfiction to prove it. When this final box set arrived at my front door I was hyperventalating with excitement. But enough about me, on to the product. I have found that YYH, as a TV show, becomes better as it goes, and I thought it was great from the start. With this particular series, it is the characters and the writing that make it so extraordinary. This is true in the Three Kings saga more than any other; all the characters (especially the fan favorites, Hiei and Kurama) are put into greater detail. Even Kuwabara, who unfortunately (yes, UNFORTUNATELY) does not appear much in this story arch has his own development. In brief, these episodes are chock full of heart-wrenching, knee-slapping, and misty-eyed moments. The worst part is to see it finish, but as Yusuke states, "like days off of school, TV shows, and all good things", this story must come to an end. (It's ironic how this is my last day of Spring break and I'm reviewing the final episodes of YYH...)
This is a must buy for any YYH fan, and if you are not a YYH fan, become one.

For the completist only.......2006-09-20
This budget-priced DVD isn't going to appeal to the casual fan, but for people who want to see more than just the shorts, it does have some nice stuff to offer. However, as great as it is to see a lot of these rarities, I do wish that they had actually been labeled and given some background, instead of just shown as more or less a clip show that's a bit under an hour long. Not even the credits tell us the names of the shorts and features that we just saw clips of. We open with a clip of the aged Stooges explaining to a reporter why they no longer really engage in the violent onscreen antics they were famous for (afraid of some little kid at home imitating it and his or her mother getting upset, as though any intelligent child would think that this stuff were actually real), and explaining how they did the things they did and why it didn't really hurt, because it just looked real on camera. We then cut to clips from:
'Swing Parade of 1946,' where the boys are looking for a watch a man named Moose lost. It includes a scene reminiscent of the famous maze of pipes in 'A-Plumbing We Will Go.' The scenes included were very funny and made me want to see the entire film; I'm told they have quite a bit of the action, even though they weren't the stars. It's also surprising to find out that this was from Curly's ill period; I could never have guessed if I hadn't been told the name of the film these clips were taken from and the year, since he actually looks and acts quite healthy. Perhaps it's because this was a full-length feature and therefore not shot in a couple of days the way the shorts were, and he wasn't required to be in every scene, so he wasn't being worked past his limit the way he was by the slavedrivers at Columbia.
'Screen Snapshots #9' (1939), featuring them at a horse show, trying to get Curly onto the horse he's supposed to be riding. This was also pretty funny. Between 1933 and 1945 they were in a total of 7 of these one-reel 'Screen Snapshots,' part of a series Columbia put out showcasing the private and working lives of a number of their stars around Hollywood.
'Hollywood Party' (1934), a movie with an all-star cast, in which they appear with Ted Healy. They show up to the party as photographers, but end up as the subject of a debate between two professors, over their place in the evolutionary scale.
'Meet the Baron' (1933), another feature in which they appeared with Ted Healy. Here they're playing plumbers who get called to a girls' dormitory to fix their shower. I've heard that the full-length movie isn't that great, but that Healy and His Stooges steal every scene they're in.
'The Camel Comedy Caravan' (1950), hosted by Ed Wynn. The full-length episode is included as a bonus feature on 'The Men Behind the Mayhem,' although the print quality there isn't that stupendous either. This one is kind of funny, but not one of my favorites of the clips included here.
Generous excerpts from 'Disorder in the Court' (1936) and 'Heavenly Daze' (1948). Just about everyone has seen 'Disorder in the Court' countless times because of how it's one of the 4 public domain shorts, but at least here a decent print was used, and overplayed though it might be, it is one of their best. For awhile, 'Heavenly Daze' (one of my favorite Shemp shorts) was mistakenly thought to be PD as well, which might be the reason it was included here.
A bunch of the lame live-action wraparounds from those godawful cartoons from 1965. The fact that they're in color really underscores just how old and tired they looked by this late point in their career. They're mildly amusing and give an idea of how they would have been in shorts with DeRita as the third Stooge, but nothing really classic or hilarious. It's hard to believe they were directed by the usually fantastic Ed Bernds. By this point they were just too old and worn-out-looking for this stuff to really be funny or believable anymore. Although I really don't begrudge them anything they did in this late era (those awful cartoons, recording albums for children, toning down the violence to placate parents, working with a third Stooge who later went on record as saying he never found them funny and thought working with them was beneath him). They were finally getting paid real money after being taken to the cleaners for 25 years and deserved to take a victory lap and some final bows.
A 1959 appearance on 'The Steve Allen Show,' in which they reprise the famous nearsighted Maharajah routine they did earlier in 'Three Little Pirates' (1946) and 'Time Out for Rhythm' (1941). They're looking kind of old in this one, though at least the black and white doesn't make it as shockingly obvious as does the color in the live-action wraparounds. It's kind of entertaining, and DeRita doesn't get on my nerves as much as he usually does (besides the fact that he didn't have much of a personality anyway, I just lost a lot of respect for him after finding out how little respect he himself had for the company that wanted him and made him famous), but I just didn't find it as funny as the much-earlier clips, from when they were still in their physical prime and at their creative peak. I also couldn't help thinking of how much better the real Curly was in the role, esp. considering that the more famous of the two Maharajah routines was done just two, two and a half weeks before he had a major stroke.
Overall, it's certainly not anything someone who's just a casual or new fan will be interested in, but it is good to see some of these rarities finally available, particularly for such a low price. And as mentioned earlier, it was kind of lazy how they weren't shown in chronological order, given any background information, or even labeled so we would know just what we were seeing clips from instead of having to find out on our own. Apart from 'Disorder in the Court' and 'Heavenly Daze' (and the terrible live-action wraparounds), I don't think even most serious fans will be apt to know right off the bat what all the other things were drawn from.
Buyer beware.......2005-12-27
What a disappointment. If you buy this product thinking you're going see any of the shorts that you remember as a kid you will be disappointed
Budget in price only.......2005-01-22
Another rare collection of Stooge goodies that may be seen as junk due to the budget price:
- The Maharaja sketch (THE STEVE ALLEN SHOW April 1959)
- Clips from:
SCREEN SNAPSHOTS # 9, ON THE GO, SWING PARADE OF 1946, HOLLYWOOD PARTY, CAMEL COMEDY CARAVAN (Ed Wynn Show), MEET THE BARON, HEAVENLY DAZE, DISORDER IN THE COURT
- NEW 3 STOOGES Live Action Wrap-Arounds:
Janitors, Barbers, Sunbathers, Campers, Flat Tire, Golfers, Weighing In, Inheritance
The Allen clip is worth the DVD alone - won't get it anywhere else - and the rest is gravy.

By the end of their mercenary mission, the Americans can no longer ignore wartime atrocities (and neither can we--the film is boldly unflinching), and conscience demands their aid to Kuwaiti rebels abandoned by President George Bush's fickle wartime policy.

Product Description
Of the millions of newcomers who flock to New York City, a red-tailed hawk's astounding arrival in 1991 made history. No other red-tailed hawk had ever attempted to make Manhattan his territory. Affectionately dubbed Pale Male, he made an exclusive Fifth Avenue apartment building his home. Pale Male became an instant celebrity who made New Yorkers' hearts and imaginations soar. Oscar-winner Joanne Woodward narrates this award-winning presentation of the Emmy-honored PBS series, NATURE. Join the close-knit community of bird-watchers who faithfully gather daily to follow the progress of this exquisite, powerful bird of prey, as he hunts Central Park's wild creatures, courts his mate on Woody Allen's balcony, builds a penthouse nest, fiercely protects his family from attacking crows, and encourages his baby chicks to fly. Pale Male and his family become a magnificent obsession for the captivated crowds below. To the regulars on the beach, it's better than Broadway. And so is this very special program that the Audubon Society has proclaimed "a classic."

Batten down the hatches for The Perfect Storm [Side A], the powerful adventure of nature at its most awesome and humanity at its most valiant. George Clooney portrays the skipper of a fishing boat and Mark Wahlberg and John C. Reilly are among his crew as their small craft is caught at sea by the fearsome 1991 "Storm of the Century." Wolfgang Petersen (Troy, Poseidon) directs. Clooney, Wahlberg and Ice Cube fall in for excitement in Three Kings [Side B]. David O. Russell (I Huckabees) guides a sometimes comic, sometimes thrilling, always involving and ultimately compassionate tale of Persian Gulf War soldiers who set out to find and raid a bunker filled with gold stolen by the Iraqi army.
