Amazon.com essential video
A flashy, splashy summer-movie blockbuster that's fun and exciting without being mindless? That's the impossible mission accomplished by director Brian De Palma, star-coproducer Tom Cruise, and the crack team of Mission: Impossible. Based on the '60s TV show and an almost impenetrably complex (but nonetheless thrilling) original story by David Koepp (Jurassic Park) and Steven Zaillian (Schindler's List), with a screenplay by Koepp and Robert Towne (Chinatown, Shampoo), Mission: Impossible begins with veteran agent Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) and his expert crew embarking on a mission that goes horribly, horribly wrong. But nothing is what it seems. The nail-biting set piece--always a signature of director De Palma (Carrie, The Untouchables)--in which Cruise is lowered from the ceiling to retrieve information from a computer in a high-security vault--is an instant classic. But perhaps even more impressive, at least in retrospect, is a flashback sequence in which two characters attempt to reconstruct a series of events from multiple points of view. It's pretty daring and sophisticated stuff for a big-budget spy movie, but brains were always what put the Mission: Impossible team ahead of the competition, anyway, no? --Jim Emerson

The classic Impossible Missions Force lineup made its debut in Mission: Impossible's sophomore season (1967-1968), which is preserved in this essential set for classic TV fans. Gone was Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, and in his place the supremely confident and smooth Peter Graves as new team leader Jim Phelps, whom most viewers identify with the series. Carrying out the missions assigned from a pre-recorded voice on the self-destroying tape recorder was magician and master of disguise Rollin Hand (Martin Landau, who moved up from guest star to regular cast member with this season), top model Cinnamon Carter (Landau's real-life spouse Barbara Bain, who won three Emmys for her work on the show), electronics genius Barney Collier (Greg Morris), and all-purpose strong man Willie Armitage (body builder-turned-actor Peter Lupus). Among the 25 adventures carried out in this seven-disc set: "The Seal," in which the IMF uses a trained cat to assist in the recovery from an important statue from thief Darren McGavin; "The Town," with Phelps discovering that Communists have overrun an entire hamlet; and "The Slave," in which the team tangle with a Middle Eastern slavery ring. Guest stars include Anthony Zerbe, Paul Winfield, Fritz Weaver, and Sid Haig, but it's the team itself that shines the brightest, especially Landau and Bain, who exude the breezy charm of the series itself (though both would depart the show by the following season). Sadly, the second season set includes no extras. -- Paul Gaita

Product Description

The head of the "Impossible Missions Force", a top-secret government group of operatives, starts a tape recorder and finds out about his latest assignment. Throughout most of the series, they would have to stop some petty dictator or powerful bad guy from whatever evil plot they had against the U.S. or Democracy in general. The elaborate use of electronic gadgetry, masters of disguise and detailed plans that require split-second timing made this tv show an "on the edge of your seater"!

Again...if you remember this when you were a child then this is perfect for you! Wonderful can't wait to get the 2nd season. Just what I remember as a child. My kids are interested as well...they are teenager's and I didn't think they would like it but they can't wait to see the 2nd season either!

4 out of 5 stars 2nd Great Series.......2007-07-04

Very happy that they finally put this series on DVD. It was great watching it way- back- when as it is now.

4 out of 5 stars Mission: ...... ah, skip it. It's GOLD!!!!.......2007-06-26

Can't think of a clever enough title for my review, but I can say that I'm pleased as punch to get my paws on this set.

I have been bitching for YEARS about this program's absence from the DVD racks, and I was nearly hysterical when I found out that Paramount got their stuff together. I have a sneaking suspicion that Tom Cruise's departure from Paramount (after he exposed himself as a hysterical fanatic on the public airwaves) led to the flexibility for Paramount to finally release the DVD's of the original series. Cruise was probably concerned that the obviously superior writing and performances found on the original show would put a crimp in his rep as Mr. M:I. He would be right!

Anyway, after a nostalgic headlong-leap into the original series DVD's, I can honestly say that I wear the wet-lipped grin of a toddler at the circus, with every sharp-witted episode I re-watch. In retrospect, I'm starting to think that I dig Briggs more than Phelps, but the complexity of the plots definitely grew in season 2. I'm sure Graves needed a few episodes to break himself into the role. By disc 3, his magic is beginning to surface.

The transfer looks good, and the colors look surprisingly crisp for a show that's nearly 40 years old. One star has to come off for the packaging. Nice box w/ slim cases (I like this trend), but absolutely NO extras. No booklet, no featurette.... nothing. Back to the days when "chapter selection" was touted as a "special feature". Regardless, nothing can take the shine off this, the most cherished of all my classic TV memories. (Odd Couple, too).

EDIT: Oh, I noticed that, in Season 2, Episode 7: Operation 'Heart', there is a Georges Rouault painting hanging in Pernell Roberts' office.... The very same one that hung in Brigg's apartment for the entirety of season #1!....

I know re-using props is common, I just like Rouault.

5 out of 5 stars Martin Landau and Barbara Bain are awesome........2007-06-11

Living near Nyc I have often come into the city to see shows. I have often been suprised when I see a television actor who gives an outstanding performance. How is this possible? on television they are only so-so.

This is not the case with mission impossible. Then husband and wife team of Bain and Landau have one of the best roles ever written for television. they do not play stupid one dimensional characters as is common on t.v. They are allowed to give tour de force performances and to suprise us every week. Greg Collins as the only African American is the genius of the group and is remarkably cool and confident and often takes technical control on some of the missions. Peter Lupus is strong and confident and never lets you see him sweat. Peter Graves comes off as non-threatening and middle of the road apple-pie. Who would suspect that he was the ploting brain behind these chess -game plots.

5 out of 5 stars Expect the impossible yet again.......2007-06-08

When the first season was released last year it was more of a blind buy for me than anything, based on fuzzy childhood memories and a well-known theme song. But I had so much fun with the set that I immediately grabbed the second season when it came out.

Season 2 introduces Peter Graves as Jim Phelps, and with his arrival we have what is arguably the show's best-known roster. Objectively I'm torn between Graves and Steven Hill, the first season leader; Graves has a warmer appeal, and he stayed with the show longer, but Hill had more of a special-ops toughness to him. Also debuting as a full cast member is Martin Landau, after spending season 1 under guest billing. Landau always steals the show, and his extensive prosthetics are the coolest element of any episode as well as what takes the most suspension of disbelief.

Speaking of which, there's a tad more of that going on this season. Maybe it's a side-effect of watching so many episodes back-to-back, but you start to question how far ahead the IMF plan to manipulate the bad guy into a certain room, or have them pull a gun at that right moment. Some traps seem overly elaborate for a relatively mild objective, but that's half the fun. The budget this season also seems a little higher; there's less obvious set-redressing like that large room from season 1 that doubled as a lobby/casino/police station/prison/etc.

So 7-discs in nice slim cases covering 25 remastered episodes, which look and sound great. The glaring lack of subtitles from the season 1 set has been fixed. A great value for any spy genre fan, and a great series for those who like classic television.

With its combination of Cold War villains and James Bond-like techno-gadgets, Mission: Impossible was an instant hit when it premiered on September 17, 1966. Airing Saturday nights at 9:00 on CBS, the series was the brainchild of creator/producer Bruce Geller, whose formula for seven successful seasons included a well-chosen ensemble cast, noteworthy guest stars, and a flexible premise that inspired clever plots twists and a constant variety of "international" locations (mostly filmed on a studio backlot). This seven-disc set includes all 28 episodes of season 1, the only season to feature Steven Hill as Dan Briggs, leader of the top-secret counterintelligence team known as Impossible Missions Force (IMF). As the no-nonsense Briggs, Hill (better known for his later role on Law & Order from 1990 to 2000) began each episode by sneakily retrieving the dossier and recorded instructions (voiced throughout the entire series by uncredited actor Bob Johnson) for the IMF's latest assignment. "Your mission, should you decide to accept it" and "this recording will self-destruct in five seconds" quickly became pop-cultural catch-phrases, as Briggs routinely selected his preferred teammates based on their mastery of practical skills. With "special appearance" billing for M:I's first three seasons, Martin Landau played master-of-disguise Rollin Hand; his off-screen wife, Barbara Bain, played top-model and undercover seductress Cinnamon Carter; Greg Morris brought hip coolness (and racial diversity) to his role as electronics expert Barney Collier; and Peter Lupus played handsome hunk Willy Armitage, adding IMF muscle to Briggs' brainy strategies.

As a Desilu production based at Paramount Studios, Mission: Impossible shared guest stars, production personnel, locations, and even occasional sets with the original Star Trek. Fans of both shows will enjoy spotting these crossover details (including George Takei's appearance in "The Carriers," a first-season highlight), and this season's other stand-out episodes include the "Pilot" (featuring Wally Cox as an ace safe-cracker), "Operation Rogosh," "A Spool There Was," "Action!," "The Train," and "The Traitor." Whether they were toppling dictators, rescuing doomed prisoners, foiling despots, or framing Mafia kingpins, the IMF agents were consistently blessed with taut, well-written plots, many unfolding with minimal dialogue and highly visual schemes that demanded (and rewarded) the viewer's close attention. Although Steven Hill eventually left the series (as an Orthodox Jew, he preferred not to work on the Jewish Sabbath, as M:I required), his single season set the stage for M:I's long-term popularity, with Peter Graves (replacing Hill as "Jim Phelps") leading the IMF from 1967 to 1973. And while Paramount has again neglected to offer DVD extras with this set, the episodes look and sound just about perfect, with a parade of guest stars including Carol O'Connor, Simon Oakland, Fritz Weaver, Nehemiah Persoff, Barbara Luna, Vic Tayback, and a host of other '60s TV regulars. Your mission--and you shouldn't hesitate to accept it--is to enjoy this classic series all over again! --Jeff Shannon

I had forgotten how cool this series really was! The first couple of seasons were especially good because the characters came across as people; some of the banter between the "spies" is pretty entertaining. Very enjoyable -- I highly recommend it!

5 out of 5 stars Memories.......2007-06-27

What fun to be able to watch these episodes in DVD format, allowing us to pause and look closely at the scene. Great memories for us.

4 out of 5 stars $19.49 for surprisingly mature entertainment.......2007-06-15

I never watched the reruns when they aired on Sundays but I took a chance on this set when it appeared in my gold box and I was pleasantly surprised. I recommend this very interesting show. I'm not so interested in the premise but I am interested in the relief it provides from the glossy but empty programs offered these days. This is just straight entertainment that assumes the audience is intelligent and has an adequate attention span to follow the story similiar to the attitude of the old Twilight Zone series.

At the time of its release, Mission: Impossible III's box office was plagued by the publicity backlash against couch-jumping star Tom Cruise. It's too bad, because this third installment of the spy thriller franchise deserved a better reception than it got. First-time feature director J.J. Abrams (bigwig TV director/producer of Lost, Alias, & Felicity) proves more than able-bodied in creating a Mission: Impossible that's leaner and less over-stylized than John Woo's sequel and less confusing than Brian De Palma's original. Plot is still a throwaway here (Cruise's Ethan Hunt rescues his kidnapped former trainee and works to steal a device that... well, we don't really know what it does, but it's something about mass destruction that costs $850 million), but the action sequences, particularly one where Ethan faces down a helicopter on a bridge and gets flung hard against the side of a car, are particularly impressive since Cruise, at 44, is still doing most of his own stunts and shows no hint of the weathered look that's struck his action-star peers. (Though no Mission: Impossible stunt will ever be quite as simultaneously nail-biting and funny as the first film's wire-dangling break-in of CIA headquarters.)

Mission: Impossible III boasts a pedigreed cast, particularly Oscar® winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (Capote) as baddie arms dealer Owen Davian. Hoffman plays Owen all teeth-clenched and cool, especially when threatening to kill Ethan in front of his lovely new wife (Michelle Monaghan) who has no idea of his spy life. But in his first action-film lead role, Hoffman's almost too calm and collected to really make a memorable villain, especially when the rest of the cast--Ving Rhames (the only other cast member to return for all three films), Asian film star Maggie Q, and an underused Jonathan Rhys-Meyers--are a highlight as Ethan's IMF team. Mission: Impossible is still fun popcorn spy fare, and if Cruise chooses to end the franchise here, at least he goes out on a high note. --Ellen A. Kim

4 out of 5 stars Utterly unheard of.......2007-06-14

Not very often do the studios come up with a 3rd installment of a film that surpasses it's predecessors. I felt that this was one of those rare cases. I was one of the minority who was not blown away by the first MI. I was even more dissappointed by the second MI. The second one was nothing but a "Cruise love-in". God forbid that they shot a single second of footage that didn't include Tom.
With these memories, I avoided this 3rd MI film. Well, today I had the day off and it was on Pay channels. I sat down and was prepared to be underwhelmed. I was pleasantly surprised. The film again relies heavily on Cruise. But, this time the story is greatly improved by the presence of Lawrence Fishburne and Philip Seymour Hoffman. Back again is the tremendous Ving Rhames. All these characters make for a compelling story. There is also the presence of the nifty gadgets and urgency we expect from MI films.
Overall I found the entire film to be much more enjoyable than the previous MI's and would recommend it to anyone.

1 out of 5 stars how dissapointing...........2007-06-13

Dissapointed, not that I had real high hopes for this one. I'm a little embarassed to say I watched this movie all the way through. The cgi was impressive, but talk about a cruise- fest. The best part was the bomb in keri russel's head exploding. The bridge scene was very cool, but the acting sucked and tom cruise is either running, crying, shooting, or base jumping about 98 percent of the time. Buy this one used if you must see it, but a scanner darkly is actually worth your money.

5 out of 5 stars Not a Couch in Sight.......2007-05-28

I avoided the third installment of Mission Impossible for the same reason a lot of people did: Tom Cruise. It's a tradeoff: a bankable star becomes a liability if you happen to dislike him. Of course, the people who don't like these big budget stars are usually not substantial enough to affect sales. Given Sumner Redstone's, CEO of Paramount, decision to cut ties with Cruise, it seems that his outrageous antics finally caught up with him.

And that's a shame, because Mission Impossible III is really good.

The problems I've had with the other installments revolved around what happened to the original conceit of the series: it was a carefully planned operation performed by a team. Being privy to the operation in the beginning, we worried for each agent as they performed their particularly dangerous and important task. This is the whole symbolism of the burning fuse: the agents light the fuse, but the conclusion is an inevitable explosion. In short, we knew what to expect and got it at every episode, even if there were a few twists and turns along the way.

Thus making Mission Impossible a star vehicle is against the spirit of the series. There's no one star agent; there can't be, because every agent is important. Right? The first two movies forgot that point.

In MI3, J.J. Abrams brings the series back to its roots. In essence, Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) performs a standard mission extraction. They pull it off perfectly. There's just one problem: the bad guy (Owen Davian, played with chilling aplomb by Philip Seymour Hoffman) refuses to be interrogated. Utterly unafraid, he begins interrogating his interrogator. And suddenly, MI3 has been turned on its ear.

What if everything went right, asks Abrams, and it still all went horribly wrong?

What's so refreshing about MI3 is that even when Hunt defects, even when he's not sure who's on his side, his team sticks by him. When he goes rogue, his team goes with him. And when he goes on a mission to stop Davian, his teammates are right there in the mix, risking their lives for their leader.

There are some amazing scenes, including a sliding fight on the rooftop of an office skyscraper and a helicopter battle in a wind turbine farm. Add into the mix a ticking time bomb and the tension and action keeps the audience on its toes.

By never forgetting what made Mission Impossible great, Abrams brings the magic back. And Cruise delivers without hopping on a single couch.

5 out of 5 stars The Best One so Far!!!!.......2007-05-26

Tom Cruise was AWESOME!!! in this One. M I 3 is the best one so far!!!!

4 out of 5 stars Good but not as great as I anticipated........2007-05-22

The film was exciting. The effects wonderfull. I thought the story suffered in relation the special effects. Entertaining film but overall dissapointing.

If you have a Hi-Def TV and you don't have a Blu-Ray player
you have no idea what your TV can do! This Mission Impossible movie set shows you why the Panavision cameras and lenses used to film movies cost over a quarter million dollars each and the Kodak film used in them cost well over a thousand dollars a roll. The blu-ray Panasonic DMP-BD10 - Blu-Ray disc player - upscaling images from this player I bought from Amazon are simply stunning! And this is a top notch action movie set.

For the fun of the series this is a must. Although MI III was not what I anticipated ( I reviewed this movie seperatelly) the other two movies make up for it. Great high definition picture and sound they actually make the films even better. The fifth star is lost due to MI III but even so the set is definatelly worth buying and enjoying.

This is a great collection of action movies that every DVD collector needs to have on Blu-Ray. High definition only adds to the enjoyment of these films and with the price at only $69.95 it is one of the cheapest ways to get a bunch of blu-rays fast. Being that this is the first box set released to Blu-ray, it makes me very excited for other boxsets to appear in the future. This one packs plenty of bang for your buck. Great transfers, soundtracks and tons of extras make this one a four-star box set.

Mission Impossible

Mission Impossible II
Visually stunning, and a likely must for John Woo aficionados, the second Mission: Impossible outing from megastar Tom Cruise suffers from an inconsistent tone and tired plot devices--not only recycled from other films, but repeated throughout the film. Despite remarkable cinematography and awe-inspiring, trademark Woo photography, the movie offers a tepid story from legendary screenwriter-director Robert Towne (Chinatown, Without Limits) and a host of other writers, most uncredited.

It is, regrettably, as forgettable as the first big-budget, big box-office MI in 1996, and it's clear (as Towne confirms) that the plot was developed around Woo- and Cruise-written action sequences. The film combines equal elements of romance and action, and is best when it features the stunning allure of Thandie Newton as Nyah, a master thief recruited by the sinewy charms of Ethan Hunt (a fit Cruise). Deeply in love after a passionate night, the couple must then combat MI nemesis (and Nyah's former lover) Sean Ambrose (Ever After's Dougray Scott). Ambrose holds hostage a virus and its cure, and offers them to the highest bidder.

Woo's famed mythic filmmaking is far from subtle, with heroic Hunt frequently slow-motion walking through fire, smoke, or other similar devices, replete with a white dove among pigeons to signal his presence. The emphasis on romance is an attempt to develop character and a more human side to superspy Hunt, but still the dreary story proves a distraction from the exciting action sequences. John Polson (as an MI team member) is an Aussie talent to keep an eye on. --N.F. Mendoza

Mission Impossible III

--Ellen A. Kim

My dad loved the collection, which was a Christmas gift. He got it in a timely fashion and has watched all three movies.

4 out of 5 stars Excited to have all three movies together........2007-01-10

I enjoyed seeing all these movies in the theater and i will continue to enjoy them at home. The extras were interesting to see the behind the scenes of how the movies were made.

5 out of 5 stars Best 'Mission' yet.......2007-01-10

This Mission is the best yet. If it were in a different genre and had less tabloid rubbish surrounding it, it would be nominated for an Oscar. JJ Abrams is a great director. Love the first scene & someone should cast the 'I'd marry him' girl in a leading role immediately!

5 out of 5 stars The BEST of Mission Impossible..........2007-04-12

It keeps you guessing and figuring it out as you go. Just the type of mystery I like! You can't go wrong with this Mission Impossible.

4 out of 5 stars A Classic Action Flick.......2007-02-11

Many of the special effects are classics in their genre, and seem somewhat cliched after being copied (or improved) by numerous other films. Tom Cruise was still a credible actor when he did MI-1. Something weird happened to him on the way to the top, but when he did Mission Impossible 1, it hadn't occurred yet. The plot is typical cloak-and-dagger stuff, with a few twists, updated for the early computer age. The technical quality of the DVD is excellent, and the movie is very entertaining, even if you barely recall the storyline a week later. If you like action movies, you NEED this one!

4 out of 5 stars Great as is all of Tom Cruise's movies .......2007-01-30

Great action and story line; it really keeps you guessing...

1 out of 5 stars Bastardized!!.......2006-10-03

Mission:Impossible, the TV series, told the adventures of the Impossible Missions Force -- an elite team of covert operatives who were sent to overthrow mob kingpins, foreign dictators, terrorists and others who threatened the security of the United States. Rather than engage in James Bond-like shoot outs, the IMF team worked together to covertly neutralize threats, leaving little or no trace of their involvement. Although the IMF had a leader (Steven Hill as Dan Briggs and Peter Graves as Jim Phelps), there was no star of the group -- just a bunch of individuals working together to achieve its objective. A truly groundbreaking show.

Along comes Brain De Palma's catastrophe of a remake, starring that couch-jumping Scientologist Tom Cruise. Within half an hour of the film starting, the entire IMF team, save for Cruise, is killed off, Jim Phelps (Jon Voight) is exposed as a double agent and basically the entire concept of the original Mission:Impossible is shot to hell. Granted, Ving Rhames and Jean Reno are present as Cruise's new team, but Mission:Impossible is quickly bastardized as yet another Tom Cruise vehicle where he preens and postures. Making a film called Mission:Impossible into a star vehicle goes against the spirit of the original TV series. It's obscene what Tom Cruise's ego has done to Bruce Geller's original concept. This is just another action film with Mr. Cruise flashing his toothy smile and saving the world all by himself. See the original TV series and skip this piece of bastardized trash.

1 out of 5 stars Terrible.......2007-06-28

All the karate BS in this movie really made me want to throw up in my mouth. The slow motion action seens are so gay and cliched that I became enfuriated that I spent my money on this. Why oh why?

4 out of 5 stars Better than I remembered........2007-06-21

I remember when this film was first released. I didn't get a chance to see this film in theaters nor did I really care to. I had seen the first M:I, and although I thought it was a fairly decent film, I didn't think it was anything to brag about. When I saw previews for M:I-2, it really had me at confusion. The film didn't seem to resemble anything of the first film. While the first one was more targeted towards adults, this one was clearly aiming for a younger audience. Naturally, I thought this movie was going to be dumb and that is exactly what I thought when I finally saw it. I was 13 yrs old, I really did not understand anything that was going on-just something about a disease and all the action scenes that were already overplayed in the tons of commercials I saw for the movie. After I saw it, I told everybody from that point on to ignore this one.

That was back in 2001. Its 2007 and I am now 19 yrs old. M:I-3 has now been made which I thought was an incredibly awesome movie. Not that long ago one of my friends and I were having a conversation about all sorts of movies. We just happened to come accross this one. I told him how M:I and M:I-3 were really good, and M:I-2 was bad. He on the other hand admitted that he actually liked the 2nd one. Seeing is how it was yrs since I saw M:I-2, I didn't really remember much except what I mentioned above. So I started checking up on it again. I saw the trailer on youtube and to my surprise, it looked pretty good. Not long afterwards, the movie came on TNT. Obviousely I watched and surprisingly enough, I enjoyed Very Much!! While it does not live up to M:I-3, it definetly earned a spot on my favorite movies list. Here's the plot.

Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise) is called into action when a fellow IMF agent Sean Ambrose (Douggray Scott) has gone rogue. Ambrose has stolen a deadly biologically engineered virus known as Chimera, a virus that kills your red blood cells if infected. There is a cure called Valeraphon which can only save a persons if treated within 20 years. However, after 20 hours, nothing can save. Hunt with the help a thief, Nyah Nordaf Hall (Thandie Newton) they must infiltrate and find out what Ambrose's plans are for the virus. Hunt must also at the same time dig deeper into discovering the truth about why this disease was created in the first place.

That basically says it. Just to add a few more things, although I actually like this movie now, I stil believe its the weakest of the M:I's. It surprises me very much that of all of them, this was grossed the most money. I think the real problem with this film is the very fact that it tries too hard to be "cool". First lets start off with the ridiculous concepts- Tom Cruise rock climbing with no gear except powder for his hands, his mission being assigned through sunglasses, the car chase with Thandie Newton (there was no suspense and the characters appear to be having fun). Then theres the action scenes. I know John Woo has his style but I think it was a bit overdone. Too many quick cuts and overuse of explosions. Then theres all the rock music in the film, I do not think that was necessary. And then there's Tom Cruise's look with the long wavy hair. I really think his hair was like that to make this movie seem "cool". I am sure the original M"I series would never have had these elements. I really think this film would have been alot better if it were its own movie rather than an M:I. Well anyway, I still suggest. But if anyone has a chance, definetly check out M:I-3. THAT ONE WAS FRIGGIN AWESOME

2 out of 5 stars The first movie was MUCH better.......2007-06-07

As others have mentioned, there was no Mission Impossible Team, except for Ving Rhames, and Anthony Hopkins, the boss, (Interesting, we got to see the face that goes with the voice on the tape that introduces the case.)

I thought the worst was the agonizing slow motion flips and kicks (often while shooting a gun in midair, upside down).

2 out of 5 stars Can we say plagiarism?.......2007-06-05

I was watching this on TV recently after having seen it only once before when it first came out and it dawned on me that it has the same basic storyline as Hitchcock's Notorious with Cary Grant and Ingrid Bergman (1946). But the result is vastly different. Notorious doesn't rely on high-tech props or unbelievable stunts - just pure good acting and suspense like only Hitchcock can do it.

3 out of 5 stars they get one more star for including the Ben Stiller spoof, "Mission: Improbable.".......2007-03-19

I think it took me two seeing to realize how yucky this movie was; there was so much that was wrong. I think the first thing that we notice is that this is not about the Impossible Mission Force, but Tom Cruise. So, aside form the name, the music, and the jargon, this has nothing to do with the classic show.

This was a let-down. Leonard Nemoy in "I Am Spock" mentioned that he loved the teamwork aspect of the series. I agree: there was something about Mr. Phelps and the IMF all piling into the getaway van and the classic Mission: Impossible recessional theme that let you know that there was a job well done because each member did his part. Like the guy said, "The greatest temporal and spiritual blessings which always come from faithfulness and concerted effort, never attended individual exertion or enterprise."

Another problem was the physics. The cycle-jousting forgets that when two objects traveling at 50 mph a piece collide, the cumulative force felt by them is not 50, but 100 mph. Talk about being jelly! And the gun in the sand: how does kicking it forward make it go one and half meters vertically into the air?

This film has plot, in the sense of having action, or a series of events. But did I mention the plot holes? How did Cruise happen to have a Richard Roxburgh mask so handy? I guess it was next to the handy duct tape. And how did they change clothes so quickly?

Yes, there is conflict: Cruise versus the Aussie, and Cruise versus the supermodel supertheif. The theme is not so obvious. There are messages about courage, duty, and self sacrifice. These are helpful, but seem to be mere distracting tinsel.

Being John Woo, this film is essentially about style. This is good for artists who have plot, theme, and characterization, and would like to perfect their craft. As a standalone attribute, however, this film leaves something to be desired. Anyone who has been on a date knows that looks only go so far. And the same applies to movies.
